DORO – Meeting Doro Pesch Was My Metal Dream Come True: Columbus Ohio, Ace Of Cups, February 9th, 2013

DORO - Publicity Pic - Raise Your Fist - 2012 - #6

DORO – It all took place last Saturday night (February 9th) at a tidy venue called Ace Of Cups in Ohio’s capital city of Columbus; which also has the distinction of being Ohio’s largest city. This Ace Of Cups club is happening and downright cool to the Rockin’ core. Sometimes, as that old saying goes: grand things come in small Rock ‘N’ Roll clubs. On that Saturday night, a grand thing did happen for me at Ace Of Cups; one I’ll never forget for the rest of my Metal life. I met DORO. I met the Queen Of Heavy MetalDoro Pesch.

To state that meeting DORO was a Metal dream come true for me is an understatement of mega-magnitude. We all have that list of Rock & Metal legends we need to meet before we die. DORO was #1 on my list, replacing the late Ronnie James Dio  whom I never did get to meet; yet I was fortunate to see DIO in concert. I guess this entire Metal dream come true wouldn’t have even happened if it wasn’t for… Rob Rockitt of HARD ROCK HIDEOUT fame. Here’s how it all unfolded:

I was staying at a Holiday Inn Express in Dayton, Ohio, with my family, while we were waiting to move into our new home on February 11th. A text came from Rob Rockitt stating: “too bad you can’t get out here earlier, you could go see DORO with me.” My reply text to Rob Rockitt was: “I’m already here, in Dayton.” The rest is Metal history! Rob Rockitt drove up from Kentucky to pick up my Metal and DORO lovin’ ass at the Holiday Inn Express I was staying at; even after I gave him the wrong directions to the wrong Holiday Inn Express, which was across town. Good going Stone. Sometimes I can be a legitimate dumb-ass.

DORO - Raise Your Fist - Large Promo Cover Pic!!

Hanging out with Rockitt was filled with Metal chatter and good-times laughter, both during our drive to Columbus and inside Ace Of Cups. We both could have talked non-stop to each other, cause we had tons to catch up on about our lives. We drove around for a short while looking for a parking spot near Ace Of Cups and hit pay-dirt; finding a parking spot just a couple of blocks away. When the two of us entered Ace Of Cups, we noticed the stage was just a dozen or so footsteps from the front door! Whoa! Needless to say, for standing room only, there wasn’t a bad spot in the house.

With a few regional bands opening the night of Metal memories, Phantom 13 and Sister Sin followed before DORO hit the stage. I really dug the set from the Shock Rockers/Horror Punk band Phantom 13 and Sister Sin’s live set was a Metal knockout! Sister Sin’s vocalist Liv Jagrell is a Heavy Metal Queen in the making… yes, Liv is that good. When DORO finally took the stage, it was as if my life was overtaken by the happiest vibes from Metal la-la land. There she was… in person… working the crowd of her adoring fans, inside this club that felt like home to me… there was Doro Pesch!

This being my first time ever seeing DORO live, it all felt so amazing to my senses. There’s something magical about the way that DORO came across on stage; it’s as if she truly made everyone in attendance feel like an important part of her life, if only for this one live night of songs. DORO has stage presence that should be taught to every up and coming Rock musician in the world today. There’s no denying that DORO’s voice and look are 100% Heavy Metal; only experiencing DORO live is witnessing this dedicated performer in all of her glorious Heavy Metal essence. I would relive this live performance from DORO thousands of times over, if it were possible!

Doro - Portrait Promo banner - nuclear blast

There were numerous moments when I’d swear DORO made eye contact with every fan while she performed… then again… I was in Heavy Metal euphoria. DORO’s musicians are world-class and proved it during each song. I can’t state it any better than that. Four highlights from an entire live set of highlights (for me) were: Raise Your Fist In The Air, Hero, Breaking The Law and All We Are. Did I mention I was mesmerized by seeing DORO perform live?

As DORO’s set came to a close, I was still reeling from hearing DORO sing Hero. Feeling the vibe of true love and respect for the late Ronnie James Dio, as it swirled around the fans and myself, inside Ace Of Cups, was a tender Metal moment for me. It’s called Metal family and there’s no better way to describe it than that. The Queen Of Heavy Metal signed a few autographs from the stage and was eventually escorted by security to the DORO merch table for a meet and greet with her fans. Rob Rockitt and I gladly waited in line to meet DORO for (at least) 40 or so minutes. I recall feeling an exhilaration like none other, as I waited in line (anxiously) with my Metal buddy. All I kept thinking (and saying out loud to Rob Rockitt) was: I’m gonna really meet her!

Doro - Publicity Photo - 2012 - #1!

I’ve interviewed a good number of Hard Rock and Metal (celebrity) musicians in my day; only these interviews have taken place by phone and email. Actually meeting DORO face-to-face is a whole different Metal ballgame, my Metal brethren. Rob Rockitt was just as determined and happy to meet DORO as I was. When our turn came to meet the Queen Of Heavy Metal, Rob Rockitt took my picture with her; as I returned the favor for him. DORO was very sweet, polite, friendly and… down to earth. I never would have imagined her any other way.

For all the millions of words I thought of saying to DORO, I wound up spilling out this babble to her: “DORO, I want to thank you for making my life better through your music.” DORO responded with: “Thank you, that means so much.” I also said: “DORO, I will forever cherish this night and meeting you.” DORO smiled at me, gently patted my right arm and responded with: “Awwwww.” I’ll never forget that brief exchange I had with DORO. Simply priceless, timeless and iconic is the Queen Of Heavy Metal.

I then walked away from my brief meeting with DORO and thanked Rob Rockitt several times on the way back to his car. We both were fortunate to have DORO autograph her Raise Your Fist CD for us as well. As we approached the car, Rob Rockitt put his arm around me and said: “Welcome to Ohio, Stone!” I looked at him and realized to myself 2 things: Metal Buddies and Metal are forever. Metal be thy name.

ORANGE GOBLIN – “A Eulogy For The Fans – Orange Goblin Live 2012” Releases March 12th, Via Candlelight Records

Orange Goblin - A Eulogy For The Fans - promo cover pic

Candlelight Records has confirmed March 12th as the North American release date for A Eulogy For the Fans-Orange Goblin Live 2012. The CD/DVD is the first proper live recording from ORANGE GOBLIN and will be released in tandem with the band’s first full stateside tour in over eight years. The special recording kicks off a planned year of non-stop touring and continues the success found in 2012 in which the band appeared/topped countless “Best Of” magazine and fan generated polls.

A Eulogy For The Fans-Orange Goblin Live 2012 includes ORANGE GOBLIN’s complete performances professionally recorded at Bloodstock Open Air Festival (England-August 11, 2012) and Hellfest (France-June 15, 2012). The DVD further includes the official Tom Cronin directed videos for “Red Tide Rising” and “Acid Trial,” the latter courtesy of Scion A/V, plus the Matt Chance directed “Red Tide Rising Documentary” and Gaetan Chataigner directed “Highway To Hellfest Documentary.” Art and design was once again provided by Jimbob Isaac under the direction of vocalist Ben Ward.

Discussing the album, Ward says, “for years people have been asking us to release a live album. It’s a warts and all recording to highlight exactly what you get at an ORANGE GOBLIN show. It’s not over-produced; you can hear the bum-notes and the forgotten lyrics as well as the energy and power emanating from the stage. And the crowd! I think that’s what a good live album is all about. It’s just the sound of us getting up on stage, plugging in and going hell for leather. Crack open a beer, turn it up loud and bang your head.”

Orange Goblin - Large Logo!!

England’s Classic Rock Magazine says, “put simply, ORANGE GOBLIN are the best metal band in Britain.” A permanent fixture on the metal landscape since their formation in 1995, ORANGE GOBLIN recordings have been embraced by fans the world over. Their live performances have been hailed as one of the best. Kerrang! says, “ORANGE GOBLIN shows are very predictable… you know they are going to be brilliant before they even hit the stage.” ORANGE GOBLIN signed to Candlelight Records late 2008 and immediately began writing new material for the first time in over five years.

Teaming with producer Jamie Dodd and two-time Grammy-nominated engineer Andy Jackson (Pink Floyd), the band completed recording of A Eulogy For The Damned late September 2011. The record was released February 14, 2012 entering the UK Top 200 at 96 and landed on Billboard’s Heat Seekers chart at 38. The album hit the top of CMJ’s Loud Rock album chart on March 7 and ended the year at position 6 on the Top 50 Year-End Album chart. Decibel Magazine called the album,” maximum riffage, turbo-doom biker rock… awesome!.” Hellbound proclaimed, “this dish is one spicy meatball.” Popdose confirmed, “possibly the best record from start to finish that they have released yet.”

A Eulogy For the Fans-Orange Goblin Live 2012 features songs that span the band’s extensive repertoire including fan favorites “Stand For Something,” “Scorpionica,” “Quincy The Pigboy,” “Blue Snow,” “Time Travelling Blues,” and the album’s single “The Filthy & The Few” which is set to impact loud rock radio on February 26.

EvilynStrange_LoveFindsYou_Promo Cover

EVILYN STRANGE are proud to announce the release of their second single, ‘Love Finds You’ through Thirteen772 Music. The digital only single has been released to tie in with Valentine’s Day and is taken from the band’s forthcoming debut album, ‘Mourning Phoebe’.

Not content with injecting a mighty dose of Mikael Johannesson ‘Sumo Rock’ Slide Guitar, the track opens with… an Al Strange drum solo! Yes, you don’t get many of those to the pound these days. Vocally there are more fist raising ‘Yeah, yeah, yeeeahs’ than you’d think possible. What more could any self-respecting rocker want?  TURN IT UP!

Stone Says: Love Finds You is all wrapped up into one delectable blend of Melodic and Heavy Rock; not falling short (and excelling) on both the drum and guitar solos, while giving way to a welcomed Classic Rock vibe that’s also enriched with a feel for both an arena and club setting. Just a superbly written, played and sung Heavy Rock song. Love Finds You only accentuates all the more reason why Evilyn Strange will be a BIG name in our small Heavy Rockin’ world very soon. Buy this new single from Evilyn Strange. Crank it up and let it Rock your brain. Metal be thy name.

In Metal summary, this new single, Love Finds You, from Evilyn Strange is: Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Manilla Road - Mysterium - cover promo pic!

Manilla Road is back with their landmark 16th full length album, Mysterium; due out February 19th on Shadow Kingdom Records.

After a career that has spanned more than three decades, the band shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. In fact they’re more active now than ever with all of the live shows booked for 2013; including an appearance at this year’s Maryland Death Fest. The time has come for Manilla Road to break out of the underground bubble and get to the level where they can get some wider acclaim to all of the hard work that’s been put forth all of these years. Mysterium is another quality Manilla Road release that sounds a lot more classic/traditional than their previous, more experimental album Playground of the Damned.

The production on Mysterium is a step above anything Manilla Road has released in the past, bringing the band into the modern era without sacrificing an ounce of their legendary style. With all of their albums, there’s nothing that’s ever the same with the albums they create or the production they have, but that’s what makes Manilla Road, Manilla Road.

Mysterium is currently streaming in full at this location: http://shadowkingdomrecords.bandcamp.com/album/mysterium

Visit http://shadowkingdomrecords.com for ordering information.

IRON MAIDEN – “Maiden England ’88” Concert To Be Released On DVD, March 25th!

Iron Maiden - Maiden England '88 - promo DVD cover pic

As reported on http://www.ironmaiden.com:

EMI are proud to announce the highly anticipated release of the Double Disc DVD MAIDEN ENGLAND ‘88 on 25 March. Now available for the very first time on DVD, this live show was filmed across two sold-out nights at Birmingham N.E.C Arena, UK in November 1988 during the band’s “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son World Tour”. Disc one contains the concert which has been specially upgraded and extended from the existing 1989 longform VHS release and now includes three previously unreleased encores: Running Free, Run To The Hills and Sanctuary thereby completing the full concert with a total running time of 110 minutes . Maiden’s own Film Producer and Director Andy Matthews went back to the 1988 edit and painstakingly remastered each shot digitally; colour correcting and grading to give the image the best possible look from that time.

As well as the VHS stereo sound track by Martin Birch, the band’s producer between 1981 and 1993, the DVD also includes a brand new 5.1 audio surround mix by Maiden’s current producer Kevin Shirley. The concert was meticulously directed and edited by bass player and founder member Steve Harris, so as to capture the performance from a fans-eye view of the stage, focusing fully on the music, the elaborate stage production and the lighting. Add into the mix an electrifying set list and of course Eddie, and Maiden England now offers a snapshot of a bygone era in which the band, as they continue to do today, devote their all in delivering the ultimate live experience for their fans.

Disc two is an extensive bonus disc featuring an exclusive documentary charting Part 3 in the History of Iron Maiden. This 40-minute film comprises recent interviews with the five band members and manager, Rod Smallwood. Picking up the story in the aftermath of the ‘84/85 World Slavery tour, this interesting and insightful documentary sees the band speak candidly about their memories of an exciting and occasionally turbulent period from which would emerge the albums Somewhere In Time and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son. As the Eighties began to draw to a close, so did another chapter in Maiden’s compelling history.

Other special extras on the bonus disc include Twelve Wasted Years. First released as a longform VHS in 1987 and available for the first time on DVD, this documentary runs for 90 minutes and includes archive interviews and dynamic live footage from the band’s beginnings in the now legendary Ruskin Arms pub, via London’s Marquee club and three World Tours. Five promo videos for the singles from the aforementioned albums are also featured and have been carefully restored and improved upon from the original films using the very latest software with the audio remastered in digital stereo.

STRYPER – Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Legends Are: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Posted in christian heavy metal, christian rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on February 13, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

STRYPER LOGO - LARGE!!

STRYPER – When I think of the band that pioneered Christian Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, STRYPER is number one. Across their catalog of seven studio albums, the words melodic and memorable jump out at me; while their 80’s arena style heaviness never seems to grow stale. After listening to STRYPER after all these years, I’m readily admitting that their inspirational lyrics and vibes never sounded so grand!

STRYPER has proven their Heavy Rock relevancy with Murder By Pride (2009) and The Covering (cover song album from 2011). With a newly inked record deal with Frontiers Records, the future looks even more positive for a band that has been Rocking positive energy into their fans souls… for decades strong.

To celebrate STRYPER being Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day, I have compiled a chronological list of ALL the STRYPER features, album reviews and news that has ever appeared on Metal Odyssey. This list of links below begins with the most recent of STRYPER posts. Scroll and click away… and enjoy some STRYPER history! Metal be thy name!

THE MELVINS – Release Unconventional Covers Album “Everybody Loves Sausages” On April 30th

Melvins - Everybody Loves Sausages - promo cover pic!

GUESTS INCLUDE MARK ARM, JELLO BIAFRA, JG THIRLWELL AND SCOTT KELLY

__________________________________________

The Melvins return with a 13-track covers album titled Everybody Loves Sausages, which is set for an Apr. 30 release via Ipecac Recordings.

“This record will give people a peak into the kind of things that influence us musically,” explains Buzz Osborne. “We REALLY like all of these songs along with the bands who actually wrote this stuff because first and foremost we are HUGE music fans.”

In a decidedly Melvins approach to a covers album, the band not only selected a unique assortment of songs to cover, ranging from Roxy Music’s “In Every Dream Home A Heartache” to Queen’s “Best Friend,” they also enlisted several friends to take part including Mudhoney’s Mark Arm joining them for The Scientists’ “Set It On Fire” and Neurosis’ Scott Kelly pitching in on a cover of Venom’s “Warhead.”

While the release is billed as a proper Melvins’ album (featuring the line-up of Osborne, Dale Crover, Jared Warren and Coady Willis), there are a handful of songs recorded as the Melvins Lite incarnation of the band (Osborne, Crover and Trevor Dunn):  “Female Trouble” (Divine a.k.a. John Waters), “Timothy Leary Lives” (Pop-O-Pies) and “Romance By Tales of Terror” (Tales of Terror).

The complete track listing with original artist and guest player notation:

02. Best Friend (Queen; Guest: Caleb Benjamin of Tweak Bird)

Mike Patton - Decibel Magazine - cover promo

Feb. 12, 2013, San Francisco – Mike Patton, in a rare and comprehensive interview, is on the March cover of Decibel Magazine.

“I first saw Faith No More in 1992, when the band came to my podunk hometown on the Angel Dust tour, with Helmet opening in support of Meantime.” says Decibel Editor-in-Chief Albert Mudrian. “It seems sort of fitting that we’d catch up with Mike Patton as he releases a new Tomahawk record that features former Helmet drummer John Stanier as well.”

The seven-page article, written by J. Bennett, spans the San Francisco-based musician’s history from his Eureka, Calif. roots with Mr. Bungle, on to his work with Faith No More and his move toward independence with his own Ipecac Recordings and his eclectic incarnations via Fantômas, Mondo Cane and Tomahawk amongst others. Copies are on newsstands now and can also be purchased via Decibel’s website: http://store.decibelmagazine.com/collections/back-issues/products/march-2013-101.

Tomahawk, who recently released Oddfellows, kick off their first west coast tour in a decade this evening at The Showbox in Seattle. Tomahawk is Duane Denison, Mike Patton, John Stanier and Trevor Dunn.

SIROCCO – Band Bio:

Formed in Co. Waterford in 2003 by Jim Tobin, SIROCCO are a blend of thrashy rythms, beautiful lead guitar melodies, intricate drumming and pounding bass lines, interleaved with plenty of dual guitar harmonies, and old school heavy metal solos, combined to create a sound which they like to call “Celtic Thrash”. Originally an instrumental band, bass player Ciaran O’ Cearuill stepped up to the mic in early 2007 to finalize the line-up, and is audible on their release “The March Through Crimson Frost”, which was officially released in the U.K. and Ireland; released on April 7th, 2008, through Code7 Music.

SIROCCO have played over 100 shows since their inception, including support spots for Exodus, Megadeth, Wasp, Suidakra, Firebird, Crowning Glory, Waylander and Wolfchant, as well as playing at the Cork Winterfest 2007 festival alongside Primordial, The DOD 2008 Festival alongside Watain and the Full Metal Rack 2008 Festival alongside Pagan Altar. The 4-piece have also travelled to the U.K., where they played a headlining show with U.K. metallers Savage Messiah and Heathen Foray in November 2007, and again in June 2008 to headline the inaugural Summer Solstice Pagan Festival.

Their new and third album, Lambay, a concept album about the Viking invasion of Ireland, saw the light of day back in August / September of 2012. 2012 also saw the bands first shows in Belarus, Lithuania, Spain and Malta.

EUROPE “Superstitious” – Song From 1988 “Out Of This World” Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

Europe - Out Of This World - promo cover pic!

EUROPE – OUT OF THIS WORLD (1988)

Epic Records

_________________________________________

EUROPE released their fourth studio album, Out Of This World, back in August of 1988. My favorite song from this album is the opening track: Superstitious. This is just one fine, memorable and inspiring (uptempo) late 80’s ballad from Europe. I still own the cassette version of Out Of This World and I’m not selling it. It has nothing to do with my being superstitious either. Metal be thy name.

Sweden’s chart-topping, multi-million unit selling band spanned the Glam/Hair, Arena Rock, Hard Rock and 80’s Heavy Metal genres with their Heavy Melodic Rock sound; embedded with powerfully driven guitars along with a dynamic rhythm section and keyboards to match. The vocals of Joey Tempest are laced with Heavy Rock eloquence, coupled with his confidence and unique harmony.

EUROPE still kicks Heavy Rock ass to this very day. Ring that EUROPE bell and tell all the villagers to gather around, cause the song Superstitious has a brilliantly contagious sound!

Watch and listen to EUROPE perform Superstitious below! Hopefully this music video hasn’t been pulled for some lame reason. If it has, then check it out for certain on YouTube. Whoa.

Stone’s Relocation Files: Part Two – It’s The Final Countdown!

Europe - The Final Countdown - promo cover pic!

Stone’s Relocation Files: Part Two – Back on January 2nd and February 8th, I wrote about how my family and I are relocating to Ohio. Leaving the Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania and embarking on an entire changeover to Ohio is no easy task! Therefore, there may be some interruption with my covering the Metal news, album reviews, interviews and random Metal blabbing that you’ve become accustomed to on Metal Odyssey.

I have scheduled some kick-ass posts that will run through the third week of February (just in case there’s a bottleneck in getting the internet into our new home).

As you read this, my family and I are now official residents of Ohio! Whoa! We are now residents of the Buckeye State!

Have no fear, Metal Odyssey is not going anywhere and I shall get back in the Metal groove, once my family and I are settled into our new home and surroundings in Ohio. In the Metal meantime, I’m crossing my Metal fingers that internet access will be delivered to our new home in a reasonable time frame!

Here’s A BIG METAL THANK YOU to every visitor for your supporting Metal Odyssey!

______________________________________

By now you are probably wondering: why did Stone put the album cover of EUROPE – The Final Countdown at the top of his Relocation Files post? The answer is simple. Ever since this whole relocation gig began to heat up, the title track from this EUROPE album popped into my Metal brain! I just couldn’t shake this (very popular) song from my sub-conscious! Therefore, as each day passed and our relocation to Ohio became more of a reality, it all became a final countdown feeling to this entire life changing journey.

I never would have predicted that this (very huge 80’s hit) from EUROPE would become a theme song for me, as it represents such an important chapter in my Metal life. Metal be thy name.

______________________________________

DID YOU KNOW: EUROPE will be playing a very special gig at this year’s Sweden Rock Festival, on June 7th; celebrating their 30th Anniversary as a world-wide successful Hard Rockin’ band! Whoa!

PESTILENCE – Signs To Candlelight Records

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , on February 8, 2013 by Metal Odyssey

Pestilence - Large Logo!

Candlelight Records today confirms the worldwide signing of PESTILENCE. The celebrated eastern Netherlands-based band is currently preparing to enter the studio to begin work on their seventh studio album, titled Obsideo. The album is expected to be produced by vocalist/guitarist Patrick Mameli and set to feature ten new songs. No release date is set as of press time.

The band comments, “PESTILENCE is very excited to announce that they have signed a recording deal with Candlelight Records. We feel that our new material is very special and innovative and that it needs the back up of a solid company like Candlelight to get it out there to the Metal world.”

Obsideo will feature band mastermind Mameli and long-time partner guitarist Patrick Uterwijk with new German bassist George Maier and Australian drummer Dave Haley. Mameli notes, “PESTILENCE is chuffed to have Dave Haley in the lineup. Dave is one of the five best extreme drummers in the world, and his talent brings PESTILENCE to new levels that couldn’t be reached otherwise. Georg Maier is a young and talented bass player that will turn some heads. Both guys are really down to earth and real easy-going. Of course, Patrick Uterwijk is my most respectable and long-going friend and musician.”

_______________________________________

Formed in 1986, PESTILENCE took influence from early American and German Thrash Metal to cultivate it’s now signature Death Metal sound. Four albums would see release and continued worldwide growth for the band before members decided to go separate ways in 1994. Fourteen years later, the band would reform and in 2009 released Resurrection Macabre (Mascot). On review, noted website Chronicles Of Chaos said, “Mameli and company chose to steer this effort down paths previously unexplored whilst maintaining their unmistakably vintage essence.” Blabbermouth added, “distinctive and unique… a diverse and satisfying metal experience.”

In recent years, PESTILENCE has also returned to the live stage; their first North American tour in over 16 years commenced at the annual Maryland Death Fest May 30, 2010. Commenting to Noisecreep after announcement of the 18-city tour, Mameli said, “we will put our heart and soul into these upcoming shows and hope to make lots of fans happy with both old and new material.” PESTILENCE was a featured performer on the second annual 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise that left Miami on January 23, 2012. The band performed two sets on the popular Caribbean cruise that also featured Cannibal Corpse, Crowbar, My Dying Bride, Samael, Overkill, and Venom among others.

PESTILENCE is exclusively endorsed by Ibanez Guitars and Pyramid Strings.
