ARCANE MALEVOLENCE – Wicked Turn Of the Vine: An Underground and Progressively Extreme, Death Metal Delicacy

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 6, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ARCANE MALEVOLENCE – Yes, Extreme Metal is the cup of Metal tea for Connecticut’s Arcane Malevolence and they aren’t about to be pigeonholed into any particular Extreme sub-genre anytime soon. You see, what I’ve heard after several near hallucinatory listens of Wicked Turn of the Vine is an Extreme Metal bag of tricks that equates to one damn terrific Extreme delicacy upon my eardrums. This diy Metal militia is making some hefty noize in the Nutmeg State, so be prepared and have your survival shelter stocked and ready.

What exactly does Arcane Malevolence sound like? Imagine this, for a Metal second my fine Extreme Metal buddies out there… take a pissed off underground vibe and combine it with some Extreme, Blackened, Death Metal grooves, then add some Extreme Metal boogie and ballistic vocals, with some legendary MACABRE influence for good Metal measure. This all sounds Progressively Extreme, doesn’t it?

No, there is no nursery rhyme spoofing going on with Wicked Turn of the Vine, just a blend of Metal extremities that flexes a Murder Metal muscle or two. Where some Extreme Metal bands take their heaviness to a blueprint level of seriousness, leaving no room for experimentation, it’s Arcane Malevolence that seems to enjoy their fondness for Extreme musical exploration. I can’t imagine this band not having fun recording this album and playing live. Even with a vibe of letting it loose, the evilness of this bands lyrics and atmosphere comes across quite nicely throughout this album.

All the key Extreme Metal ingredients are heard on Wicked Turn of the Vine, in nailing down the clear Metal fact that my brain and ears have taken quite the Extreme wallop from Arcane Malevolence. There is never a boring twist or turn in the arrangements of the songs on this album, with plenty of tempo shifts and vocals that change like an extreme chameleon. There are times when Wicked Turn of the Vine sounds dastardly doomy and borderline stoner-psychedelic on guitar parts and this is the Metal personality of Arcane Malevolence, never really knowing what lurks around the corner is not such a terrible thing in Metal.

I’m impressed by the interchanging melodies and super speedy rhythm section of this band as well. Taking in Arcane Malevolence is like putting my ears up to an Extremely Progressive Metal kaleidoscope of sound. Wicked Turn of the Vine is equivalent to that horror movie you must watch again and again, just to take it all in. This is an album that can serve as both a Metal companion to Armageddon and that long drive to the dreaded in-laws, either way their both the same. Or to curb your underground Metal longing, you can choose to have Wicked Turn of the Vine as your Extreme Metal dietary supplement of choice, one that is a surefire means to serve you right… as it did for me.

Hey… this Wicked Turn of the Vine review is over. I said it’s over. Now go out and get your ears scorched by some Arcane Malevolence, buy their CD (or download from iTunes) and show some damn couth. Metal be thy name.

SEBASTIAN BACH – Kicking & Screaming: Heavy Metal Hallelujah! This Album ROCKS!

Posted in arena rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 5, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Sebastian Bach Kicking & Screaming – I love those cherished moments when a Rock N’ Roll hero is reborn. In the Metal case of Sebastian Bach, a Heavy Metal hero is reborn. The second solo album from Sebastian Bach, Kicking & Screaming, is to be released on September 23rd, 2011 via Frontiers Records. Better mark your Metal calendar for this one… cause it’s a blazing trip of melodic and dark edged Heavy Metal that kicks more ass than a pissed-off parochial school nun on steroids. Welcome back Sebastian, even if you never left the damn building after all!

If the title track Kicking & Screaming doesn’t knock your brains around in a whirlwind of Heavy Metal euphoria, then My Own Worst Enemy is gonna drop a flyin’ and Heavy Rockin’ elbow upon your Heavy Metal starved cranium. This album never seems to hold back a damn ounce of psyched-out fuel, making the high-octane experience, of listening to an entire Heavy Metal album once again… very much in vogue. Sebastian Bach can also take a Metal bow and know that he is once again, without a doubt from this Metalhead, one of our genre’s finest vocalists. His voice is a musical instrument, one which carries Kicking & Screaming to it’s profound psyche-out-nation heights.

Sebastian can snarl and scream with the very best of ’em, while also singing harmoniously through melodic and heavy Rockers: Caught In A DreamAs Long As I Got The Music and I’m Alive. If not for this being 2011, these three songs would be FM radio favorites and hit singles chart toppers. All the hot gals in their cougar spandex shall dance in the streets once again and shake their foundations! Sebastian Bach has brought back that damn fever of Arena Heavy Metal being a dominant force in the air once again! Metal be thy name and ring that F’n Metal bell… cause Sebastian Bach has told all the poser Rock and bubble gum Pop to go straight to hell!

Yes, Sebastian brings on the hard & heavy and with authority on Dirty Power. This song has the guitar muscle and rhythmic speed of a runaway Harley, being commandeered by the mighty vocals of Sebastian as it rips and erupts with what I consider Heavy Metal splendor. Nick Sterling never seems to give his guitar or bass a breather throughout this album of pumped-up Heavy Rockin’ ecstasy. Nick can shred. Nick can play. ‘Nuff said. The only breather for Nick on guitar is when John 5 steps in to lend his legendary licks on Tunnelvision. I’ll say that this song is so good it’s damn scary. A Heavy Metal song to get your head bangin’ and fists pumpin’ into the air… while Sebastian is screaming and crooning his Metal lovin’ heart out.

Bobby Jarzombek on drums is spot-on and such an insane listen. Sebastian Bach is complimented perfectly by Bobby’s drumming, bringing back those days when Heavy Metal wasn’t focused on blast beats and psychotic speed in order to sound bad-ass. Kicking & Screaming is bad-ass. Okay, is there a moment that is mellow on this album? Yes and it’s called Dream Forever. An up-tempo ballad that has me blushing cause I like the damn melody. Metal be thy name I’m becoming a ballad freak in my near golden years. Call them hot girls over wearing them cougar spandex… cause I want to see them all cry while they listen to Dream Forever.

Tell all the people who you see… Sebastian Bach has super revived a sound that once was thought to be extinct during the 90’s and has injected more modern-day relevance into his Metal than you could ever imagine. Play One Good Reason extremely loud and then give me one good reason as to why Kicking & Screaming is not a shining moment for Heavy Metal in 2011. Sebastian Bach’s second solo album has all the ingredients for my bellowing: must buy and crank it up insanely loud all you Metalhead mutha’s!

Now… I just have to convince my wife to dig out her ol’ cougar spandex… rrrrraaaawwwrrrrr

GRAVEWORM – TRACKLIST AND ARTWORK OF NEW ALBUM “FRAGMENTS OF DEATH” ANNOUNCED

Posted in Black Metal, Extreme Metal, gothic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

GRAVEWORM are back – and almost back to the roots! The Italian dark metal outfit delivers once again a melodic, mystic and dark masterpiece. The sequel to the successful “Diabolical Figures” album from 2009 will be called: “Fragments of Death”.

Now, the band announced the tracklist and the artwork of the upcoming album:

01. Insomnia
02. Only Death In Our Wake
03. Absence Of Faith
04. Living Nightmare
05. The World Will Die In Flames
06. 不安の中で (Anxiety)
07. See No Future
08. The Prophecy
09. Remembrance
10. Old Forgotten Song
11. Where Angels Do Not Fly

BONUS TRACK:
12. Awake

Stephano Fiori (vocalist) commended the new album:

“For me, the cover artwork reflects exactly the lyrics. The album generally deals with the topic of death. So the fragments are pieces of the puzzle of death. Each one of the songs represents a way to die. For example, song 6 is about the happenings in Japan. Other songs are about war, which sadly still exists in this world these days. We’re all influenced by all of these proceedings. Be it that you’re confronted with them yourself, you know someone who is, or you see it in the media. The angel of death on the cover is made of pieces of the puzzle, the so-called elements of death…”

Cover artist Daniel Hofer states:

“When the band presented the new album’s title and the contentual orientation to me, a concrete picture came to my mind quite quickly. An angel of death, rising from one dimension and returning to his former strength. The ´fragments´of this angel of death are both depicted as shards and pieces of a puzzle – this image can be found throughout the whole booklet. The basic idea for the cover can be transferred to the band’s musical return to their roots and can be compared to the quite well-behaved angel that could be seen on the (N)Utopia cover who returns now as a corrupted messenger of death. After “Diabolical Figures”, it was a very nice and productive cooperation again and I’m happy that the band agreed on me as the designer once more.”

“Fragments Of Death” will be out at October, 21, 2011 via Nuclear Blast.

SINISTER REALM – A Metal Odyssey Exclusive Interview!

SINISTER REALM – Traditional Heavy Metal, aka Classic Metal, reigns supreme in 2011. With hordes of legendary Traditional Metal bands leading the never-ending charge, to this very moment as you read this, there are a good many new, hungry and talented Metal bands out there that revere Metal’s history of tradition. Sinister Realm is one such Metal band. Led by founding member and bass guitarist John Gaffney, Sinister Realm is a band that I have admired and loudly recommended, since my first thorough listen of their second studio album The Crystal Eye (Shadow Kingdom Records) which was released this Summer.

Calling Allentown, Pennsylvania their Metal home, Sinister Realm is a band amassing a loyal following of Metal fans from Trexlertown, Pennsylvania to points worldwide. Sinister Realm has created some incredible Traditional Metal that MUST be heard to understand my Metal point. It’s not everyday that I bellow with such Metal pride about a rising Metal band such as Sinister Realm. Alex Kristoff (vocals), John Risko (guitar), John Kantner (guitar), Chris Metzger (drums) and John Gaffney’s bass illuminates my eardrums with their utmost Metal talent and respect for the Metal they play.

Traditional Metal goes much farther than “the look” of denim and leather. The sound, lyrics, vibes and attitude I hear on The Crystal Eye are all-encompassing of what Traditional Metal is all about in my Metal world. Overall, Sinister Realm represents where Metal was so many years ago and where it is today, in all of its powerful glory. Sinister Realm is the real Metal deal here, fellow Metalheads.

Taking a time out from playing live gigs amid a busy schedule, John Gaffney was courteous to answer ten questions for Metal Odyssey. Covering topics ranging from the new album to respecting the history of Metal, here is what John Gaffney had to say:

John Gaffney, bass guitarist, songwriter and founder of Sinister Realm.

Stone: Can you share the goals and mindset of the band as a whole, while recording “The Crystal Eye”?

John Gaffney: With the new album our goal was pretty simple, to take a step forward from our first album. I think my mindset when I started writing the music was to just make sure that every song was as good as I could make it. I wanted to make sure there was a good amount of variety also, some fast songs, some slow and mid tempos one. I know all the other guys really wanted to make this one a good follow-up to our debut record. The goals of our band in general are to always get better and keep pushing forward, to play and perform better, to get our music out to as many metal heads as possible and in general to just keep growing as a band.

Stone: How is the songwriting and lyrics shared among the band?

John Gaffney: All the music and lyrics are written by me but the other guys definitely add their personalities to the songs. I demo everything out in a very rough format with a drum machine and me singing and the other guys take that and add their own thing to it. When I write I really think about the guys and their personalities on their instruments and I write to their strengths so that the songs feel natural to them and not like I’m asking them to play or sing things that don’t fit who they are as musicians. Even though I write the music, the strength and identity of Sinister Realm is really in the collection of all the individual players, we work and sound really good together in my humble opinion.

Stone: Just how important is the history of Metal to Sinister Realm?

John Gaffney: Very important, especially the early years of metal, I’m very much a Heavy Metal scholar. I’m always reading about heavy metal and searching out old classic bands that I may not have heard of yet. I’m a very big fan of the “golden” years of classic metal as I like to call it, 1980 to about 1984. The albums that Priest, Maiden, Dio, Sabbath, Ozzy, Mercyful Fate and many others released during those years are some of my absolute favorite heavy metal albums of all time. With the band we really try to pay our respects to those great metal classics, when we perform or work on new music all those bands are in the back of our mind, they are our benchmarks if you will, we really want to do this music justice and we consider it a great honor to be called a traditional metal band.

Stone: How did Sinister Realm and Shadow Kingdom Records find each other?

John Gaffney: Well…a bit of history on the band I guess is in order here. I used to be in a band called Pale Divine, when I left the drummer Darin McCloskey called me and said he wanted to work on some of the ideas I had that were never used in Pale Divine.  As things progressed it started sounding really good and we decided to get a proper singer and record a demo, so into the picture came Alex. I played guitar and bass on the original demo, Darin played drums and Alex sang. Darin knew Tim from Shadow Kingdom Records and ran into him when Pale Divine was playing in Pittsburgh, he passed our demo on to him and he really liked it.  At the time the demo was really making the rounds on the internet and we got a few offers from other labels but we really liked where Shadow Kingdom was at the time and the other types of bands they had so we went with them.  After we got signed we added our current guitar player John Kantner and a lead player and quickly recorded our self titled full length. Right after that Darin had to leave for personal reasons and our original lead player was asked to leave so we brought Chris Metzger in on drums and John Risko on lead guitar. Lots of gigs followed and we’ve just released our second album “The Crystal Eye”.  That’s our history in a nutshell.

Stone: What venue that Sinister Realm has played to date exhibited the most rabid Metal fans?

John Gaffney: We played a Doom Metal festival in Wisconsin this Summer that was really cool, we have a lot of great local fans who really support us also so it’s hard to pick one venue, we have fun where ever we play.

Stone: What is the biggest hurdle that confronts a Metal band in 2011?

John Gaffney: Trying to stand out above the bottomless sea of bands that are out there right now. The Internet is a great thing because anybody can get a band together, put something out and promote it. The Internet is also a bad thing because anybody can get a band together, put something out and promote it..haha. It works both ways. There are just so many bands out there now and the playing field is so so crowded that it’s really difficult to get yourself to stand out of the pack. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication and sticking to and believing in what you’re doing. Selling CDs is very difficult nowadays because there is a lot of illegal downloading and not many people are even into buying CD’s anymore. I’m old-fashioned and still listen to vinyl, in fact I have a rather large Metal vinyl collection and consider that to be one of my hobbies.

Sinister Realm – The Crystal Eye (Shadow Kingdom Records/2011)

Stone: My favorite song on “The Crystal Eye” is the title track. That song just psyches me out blindly!  Which one is yours and why?

John Gaffney: I like “The Crystal Eye” also. I think I like it because it’s a great title track and has a really good “epic” feel to it. All the guys sound great on it, I especially like John Risko’s lead solo on that one, just super cool! I love the way that guy plays. It’s just a song that came together really nicely if you know what I mean. If I had to pick a close second I would say “Signal the Earth”. I like the feel and groove of the song and I was proud of my lyrics on that one, it’s about a guy sent on a mission in space, now’s he’s trapped in his space ship alone, seeing and hearing things and trying to signal the earth that he needs help. Plus there’s a bass solo in that song… ha ha.

Stone: Is there a “dream band” Sinister Realm wants to be contacted by to support on a major tour?

John Gaffney: Any of the big classic bands like Priest, Maiden, Sabbath would be a dream. I’m also a big fan of Candlemass so I would love to be able to play in Europe or Scandinavia with them.

Stone: How many guitars do you own and which one is your favorite?

John Gaffney: Bass is my main instrument but I do own an early 80s gibson flying V guitar and a Fender telecaster guitar. As for basses, I have three. A 1978 Fender jazz bass, a 1984 Fender precision and a Geddy Lee model Jazz bass. For Sinister Realm I use the Geddy Lee bass, it has a great aggressive grinding growling sound. I use an Ampeg Svt-Pro 2 and Ampeg 4-10 cabinet live for amplification.

Stone: The talents and musical skills of Sinister Realm are obviously heard by my ears on “The Crystal Eye”. What are the other intangibles required to create such a powerful album of Traditional Heavy Metal? What is Sinister Realms “Metal X-Factor”?

John Gaffney: There’s a lot of X factors, I really couldn’t pin it down to one thing. I tell the guys all the time that it’s the little things that make a great band. Playing in tune, having good equipment, having good players and a good singer. If I had to point to one thing though I would say at the end of the day it’s songs and how their delivered. The average listener is not a musician, they are just fans of the music, so the only thing that is really important to them is if they like the songs or not. There are plenty of bands through history who had great players that never went anywhere because their songs just weren’t that good. It’s why the Beatles have lasted forever, they had great songs! So for Sinister Realm I think the X-factor is a combination of everyone’s professionalism and individual personalities wrapped around the songs, that is our “X-Factor”.

DEATHSTARS has a decade of debauchery under their belt. The music – which has been synonymous with darkness, sex, leather and glitter – is based upon the fusion of power, aggression and straight forward rock.

The success of their second album ”Termination Bliss” and their latest full length release ”Night Electric Night” threw the boys of death to the very stars.

Currently the band is in studio to record the first music of the coming album.

The new single will be released through Nuclear Blast Records late October, and the “Made In Germany 1995-2011” together with RAMMSTEIN starts November 6.

DEAD IN THE DIRT – Confirm EP Via Southern Lord; Tour Announced

Posted in Extreme Metal, hardcore metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

An intensely bitter act hailing from the temperate climate of Atlanta, Georgia, DEAD IN THE DIRT have confirmed an upcoming 7″ EP release via Southern Lord for late this September, simply and aptly entitled, Fear.

A savage fucking wrecking crew who merges blinding hardcore fury with Blackened Metallic might, DEAD IN THE DIRT simultaneously and effectively spew forth filthy, musical mayhem, while concurrently displaying clear and concise production values in their destructive hymns. The band’s unhinged style draws from the discordant heaviness His Hero is Gone, the urgency of Cursed, the speed of DropDead and the Blackened darkness of Deathspell Omega.

DEAD IN THE DIRT‘s debut EP, Fear, is literally one of the heaviest and most brutal recordings from a new act to come out in recent times! The Fear 7″ will see a one-time pressing of 1500 copies via Southern Lord on September 27, 2011, and once it’s sold out, it’s dead…

In support of the release DEAD IN THE DIRT are set to hit the road for most of September, kicking the shit off with a record release show on September 10th with Earth and Mount Eerie.

HULL: New Track Premiere Brought To You By The Village Voice

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, sludge metal with tags , , , , , , , on August 30, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Today long-running New York City weekly newspaper, The Village Voice, is hosting an exclusive stream/download of “Fire Vein,”  the fifth track off HULL‘s upcoming new full-length,  Beyond The Lightless Sky. Set for release on October 11, 2011 via The End Records, the follow-up to the band’s critically acclaimed Sole Lord debut was co-produced by Brett Romnes and mixed by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Neurosis, Melvins, et al).

Check out “Fire Vein,” HERE.

Hailing from the streets of Brooklyn, New York, HULL has yet again emerged with a creation to outlive the ages with latest saga, Beyond The Lightless Sky. Digging further into the past, the Mayan epic takes the listener through a division of two brothers and the struggles that they are faced with. One finds salvation amongst the stars and the wisdom of a stranger, while the other is mesmerized with the bloodthirsty belief of sacrifice and self-mutilation. In silence lies a realm that exists outside the plane of fear.

Commented the Village Voice in an advance review of the record: “Beyond The Lightless Sky, doesn’t stay in one place for too long; instead, it veers between motorcycle-revving D-beat, bog-trawling doom, sinister black metal, Neurosis drum-offs and hypnotic passages that gnash like a venom-dripping cousin to the final Isis album.”

Beyond The Lightless Sky features guest appearances by vocalist Jarboe, keys/ambiance by Fade Kainer (Batillus/Jarboe/Inswarm ) and cello by Joe Merolla with artwork by Tamara Waite-Santibanez (http://nogutsandnoglory.blogspot.com). Pre-order Beyond The Lightless Sky HERE.

VREID: Issue 2011 Tour Update

Posted in Black Metal, Extreme Metal, extreme music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 30, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Norwegian Black Metallers, VREID, kicked off the Black Path Of America Tour 2011 last week in Toronto and though their arrival was met with a series of weather calamities and one canceled show in NYC due to the prospective threat of Hurricane Irene, the band soldiers on.

Commented bassist Hváll: “Our North America tour has been filled with action so far. An earthquake upon arrival, tornadoes as we entered Toronto and then Irene came and shut down our New York show. Mother earth has unleashed her wrath upon us this time around. We are extremely disappointed that our New York show got canceled, but be sure that VREID will return. We kicked ass in Toronto and had a great show; next up was Montreal which was massive. An absolutely fantastic show in all ways. The audience of Montreal has to be one of the most dedicated on this planet. Then we hit Kingston, New York. It was good to see people ignoring the rain and fear of Irene, to come to The Basement to rock like a hurricane. Now we are in Cleveland and ready to give  a massive dose of Norwegian Metal at Peabody’s. We hope the upcoming  shows will continue in the same good way as the first three. The audience in North America has once again shown their intense dedication, which makes these shows a blast for us. See you soon.”

Queensrÿche – 10 Great Songs CD: A Potent Compilation Spanning A Legendary Discography

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 27, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Queensrÿche – A brand new greatest hits compilation spanning the legendary discography from Queensrÿche was released on June 14h, 2011, via Capitol Records. This new Queensrÿche compilation is titled 10 Great Songs. I won’t argue that these are truly, “10 Great Songs” from this iconic band! 10 Great Songs is a running series on Capitol Records, where many other bands are having their greatest hits compiled and released as well. This is a cool compilation series that Capitol Records has embarked on, especially if you want those 10 songs that a band is most famously known for.

I stumbled upon this CD while conducting my weekly walk-through of the CD aisle at my local Super Walmart. I already own The Best Of Queensrÿche: Sign Of The Times (Capitol/2007) along with each of their studio albums, therefore did I buy this 10 Great Songs CD? Um, okay, yes I did buy it. You see, once I saw it on the rack, with a $5 (U.S.) price sticker on it, I grabbed it. $5 new! Heck, the cover photo of Queensrÿche on this 10 Great Songs has never been on any other album of theirs… to the best of my Metal knowledge. Throw in that fact that I am very weak at saying “no” to purchasing any CD of a core favorite band of mine and I’m cooked. Just stick a Metal fork in me.

Queensrÿche has 12 studio albums in their storied discography, (with 2007’s Take Cover being a cover song album). When deciding upon which songs best represent the legendary Metal career of Queensrÿche, compilation producer Michael Murphy has nailed it down… and the track listing here is very impressive. (See track listing below). Queen Of The Reich and The Lady Wore Black will always be my sentimental favorites, for these are the two songs that kick-started the career of Queensrÿche, both appearing on their debut S/T EP from 1983.

I’ve seen this Queensrÿche CD selling new for $6.97 (U.S.) on Amazon.com. That’s practically $2 more than what Super Walmart is selling it for… plus you have to pay a shipping cost on Amazon.com too. Yes, Stone is a Metal bargain hunter, even if I do buy CD’s with songs that I already own on them. Metal be thy name.

KRAMPUS – Kronos’ Heritage: 3 Song EP Admirably Blazes With Both Melodic and Extreme Folk Metal

Posted in Extreme Metal, folk metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 26, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

KRAMPUS – When it comes to Folk Metal, the European vibe and feel is an unavoidable experience for me. Italy’s Krampus takes their very own beauty and the beast style with Melodic Death Folk Metal and serves it up in a manner so splendid and Extreme, that it’s downright irresistable to my Metal senses. Whoever says woodwinds are not Metal must be taken for a long walk behind the abandoned tool shed and be given to the wolves. The flute may lend beauty to the Folk Metal that Krampus plays, only it serves as a more important and sturdy foundation to this unique sound that swirls about freely amidst the beast, which I’ll also call: the heaviness.

While I listen to Krampus, I often times cannot believe I’m hearing such a marriage of musical instruments come together so astonishingly and simultaneously melodic and brutal. Krampus brings their brand of Melodic Death Folk Metal to a level of credibility that is overwhelmingly convincing. If a three song EP is going to capture anyone’s attention, it must deliver from every musical angle. Kronos’ Heritage does deliver continuously in a melodic approach while Extreme Death Metal vocals are a dominant factor. A compelling element about the style of Krampus, is the vocals never bury the music and vice versa.

While the flute keeps time with the accelerated beats of the rhythm section as the guitar riffs are being fired about, Krampus plays Metal at break-neck speed. All this is while any tempo shifts and time changes that occur, seem to do so with a fluidity that seamlessly fools the consciousness. Krampus is so worth checking out if you haven’t done so already. This is a band that is playing some very real and extraordinary Metal. Krampus embellishes their songs with amazing balance, with their skillful musical respect towards both melody and extremity. That commands my upmost Metal respect.

TWISTED SISTER – My Favorite Album From This Legendary Heavy Metal Band Is…

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

TWISTED SISTER – I’m sure many of you by now are wondering which Twisted Sister album is Stone’s favorite? Then again, countless numbers of you aren’t wondering about this at all. Well, my favorite Twisted Sister album of my entire Metal lovin’ life is… well, um, it’s a tie. You see, there is no other way around it. That’s it. My decision on this Metal matter was made many years ago. Make that many decades ago. Under The Blade from 1982 and You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll from 1983 are IT when it comes to Twisted Sister for me.

I embraced Twisted Sister before MTV finally realized they really did Rock. I felt like I was missing out on the band that pummeled my eardrums into Metal bliss with their raw and muscular East Coast Metal that I listened to on their first two albums, once Stay Hungry and Come Out And Play pushed Twisted Sister to the forefront as MTV and chart favorites. Maybe it was the non-commercial mystique of the first two Twisted Sister albums that won me over from the onset. Sure, You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll was released on Atlantic Records, still, that wasn’t an instant recipe for a commercial Metal album. Don’t get me wrong, I was as pumped up as any Metalhead on the planet when Twisted Sister became a household name and Dee Snider stood up to the venomous dictatorship known as the PMRC.

It’s the raw power and back alley vibe that these first two Twisted Sister albums scream with, an almost underground feel swirls about the songs on both. This was Twisted Sister the Metal band that I’d crank up psychotically loud in my parent’s basement while the lyrics of We’re Gonna Make It, I Am (I’m Me), You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll and Day of the Rocker gave me super teenage powers. I would take those same super teenage powers and use them to get through a typical high school day of having my self-esteem receive its daily beating. My self-esteem during those teen years fought back and remained intact, courtesy of Twisted F’n Sister.

When I listened to the songs Under The Blade and Shoot ‘Em Down, I felt as if I was listening to the ultimate bad-ass band in the land. These two songs alone had me feeling like Twisted Sister could kick the shit out of my high school antagonists that picked on me, a fantasy back then that was beneficial Metal therapy for my mind. Twisted Sister was my friend all those years ago, (like so many bands I listened to), protecting me from self implosion while I struggled through those early teen growing pains.

Personal memories can become attached to any album. Regardless of how silly it may seem now, in reflecting on how Twisted Sister made an impact on me, it was those first two albums from this influential Metal band that moved me most. Only now I don’t need Twisted Sister to kick the shit out of anyone. Yes, Twisted F’n Sister and their first two studio albums were an integral part of making me the SMF that I am today. Metal be thy name.

Five METAL Songs and Albums From 2011 You Must Check Out!

Posted in doom metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on August 23, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

U.D.O. HAS COMETH BACK IN 2011 AND SET ME METAL STRAIGHT.

Five Metal Songs and Albums You Must Hear – I love Metal. No, I really love Metal. Therefore, I am indulging in a personal Metal duty in alerting you to five Metal songs and albums that are a must to hear during this Summer’s end of 2011. These fired-up Metal songs and kick-ass Metal albums are all released this year! My only two requests to you while listening to these five Metal songs and albums are: play ’em loud and let yourself get psyched-out ’cause METAL LIVES! By the way… I put U.D.O. – Rev Raptor at the top of this post ’cause it is an all-out, scorching blitz of Old School Metal. Hallelujah fellow Metalheads, unite and ring that F’n Metal bell.

SOURVEINFangs from Black Fangs – (Candlelight Records, released June 21, 2011)

Listening to Fangs from Sourvein is like receiving an open-handed Doom Metal slap to my face. Listening to the entire album Black Fangs is a double open-handed Doom Metal slap to my face. I like that. This song set me Metal straight the first time I heard it and it’s heavy as F’n molasses. The thick and massive guitar riffs from King James and the battering vocals of T-Roy are eye-popping and earth splitting. Throw in a rhythm section that seems intent on splitting the universe in half, just for good Metal measure. Fangs is not just a song to hear, it’s a song to experience and Black Fangs is a Metal destination for the Metalhead brain.

PENTAGRAMCall The Man from Last Rites (Metal Blade Records, released April 12, 2011)

Pentagram = Doom Metal. Pentagram is back with their 7th studio album Last Rites and my favorite song on this album is Call The Man. There is a Doom Metal groove happening on this song which has created quite a stir in my Metal saturated brain. Bobby Liebling has that ability to wrap this song around his vocals, making him the man. Listening to Call The Man and this entire album is like getting psyched-out by a late night thunderstorm, there’s just no other way for me to explain it. Metal be thy name.

SINISTER REALMThe Crystal Eye – (Shadow Kingdom Records – 2011)

Allentown Pennsylvania’s Metal warriors have an unbelievable ability to harness their Metal skills to create an album that is more potent with memorable songs than some Metal bands entire discography. The title track hasn’t just kicked my ass, it has kicked my ass with quantum Metal authority. The feel, vibe and Metal totality of this song flexes old school Metal in the vein of DIO and any other Traditional Metal icon you can think of. Yes, this song and album are that grand and Sinister Realm is that great.

FAIR TO MIDLANDMusical Chairs – (eOne Music, released July 12, 2011)

What makes Fair To Midland so damn special to me is their capacity to push the Metal envelope with musical experimentation. Are they Progressive? Alternative? Metal? Extreme? Hard Rock? Try all of the above. At the end of the day, Fair To Midland is an assorted listen into what sensational Heavy Music can sound like when a band decides to throw F’n caution to the F’n wind. After your first listen to Musical Chairs, you might want to breathe a sigh of relief knowing there is a band out there that crushes narrow-mindedness, when it comes to writing and playing the heavy stuff. Arrows & Anchors is a thorough listen into what can be successfully achieved, when a band doesn’t give a crap about what other bands are playing.

U.D.O.REV-RAPTOR – (AFM Records – released May 31, 2011)

Yes, Udo Dirkschneider is a living Metal legend in my Metal world. The Metal shelf life of his band U.D.O. has proven any and all negative critics wrong once again, with album #13 added to a discography that deserves a double horns to the air. The songs on Rev-Raptor are indicators that U.D.O. is still a Metal band to reckon with. My pick on this notable Metal album is Renegade. Fast, furious and delectably heavy is Renegade. This is THE song and THE album you want cranked up and shaking your world and the world outside… while the neighbors are having that stupid, annual, gargantuan picnic that you were not invited to.

METAL BE THY NAME.

LONG LIVE METAL.

The word “delectably” was used in this post.

GLORIOR BELLI: Band Issues The Great Southern Darkness Video Teaser

Posted in Black Metal, Extreme Metal, extreme music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 22, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

French Black Metal goliaths, GLORIOR BELLI, recently issued a video teaser for upcoming new full-length, The Great Southern Darkness. Check it out now at Revolvermag.com.

The Great Southern Darkness offers up 11 tracks that magnify  GLORIOR BELLI‘s finest qualities: Debilitatingly fast, yet simultaneously dark and swampy with all the Americana/Stoner/Blues elements the band and their fans have come to embrace. Said Revolver in an advance review of the record: “The album combines vicious Black Metal riffery with deep New Orleans Stoner grooves to create a Metal monolith that is equal parts northern blaze and southern trendkill.”

Formed in the suburbs of Paris during the close of 2002, what began as a noxious duo soon became an untamable beast, acting as a beacon for everyone looking to free themselves of the influence of the Demiurge. Lyrics and themes explored throughout the years reveal a sincere inclination for rebel-ism and a sense of poetry. Today, the name GLORIOR BELLI has garnered a stellar reputation in the Extreme music community for mixing desert rock textures with the brutal, ominous, doom-laden vibe typical of Black Metal. But don’t bother trying to restrain that which cannot be confined, for this is merely the greatest curse of the cosmic scheme.

The Great Southern Darkness is scheduled for a North America release on September 27, 2011 via Metal Blade Records.

Check out “Secret Ride To Rebellion” at the band’s official landing page, where you will also find pre-order details, HERE.
