SAHHR call Los Angeles, California home and are a Black Metal band. Their new 3 song and self-titled EP is bloodthirsty and scalding to my Metal senses! Whoa, I dig this EP and highly recommend  it to ALL Black Metal fans across planet Earth. Each time I listen to this EP, it carries me off to another imaginary and mystical Metal world; that’s what excellent Black Metal does for me. I appreciate any songs SAHHR wanted to include on this EP; still I beg SAHHR to release MORE of their Blackened rage very soon!!

PINK VELVET KRUSH “F.S.O.A.” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists! Whoa!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall5

Supergroup Pink Velvet Krush originate from Long Island, New York and they released a marvelous EP of five songs in the latter part of 2014, via HighVolMusic. If this EP from Pink Velvet Krush, F.S.O.A., is an indication of what’s to come from them, then I am holding my spot as first in line! Everything about this EP is BIG sonically and makes me feel freaking amazingly great!

Buy, Support And Check Out Pink Velvet Krush:

I cannot help hearing the passion that Pink Velvet Krush has towards their own music and the Rock ‘N’ Roll legends that have influenced them. This band is so grand to listen to on this E.P. that it’s downright stunning. Make no mistake, Pink Velvet Krush are an original group and are/would be an asset to any open-air festival of Hard Rock and/or Metal. Pink Velvet Krush ROCK so damn fine that Mötley Crüe, Judas Priest, Def Leppard and KISS should be knocking down PVK’s door to be their opening band. I’m not talking shit here, I put my Metal reputation on it. All five songs on F.S.O.A. rain down with that glorious 80’s Arena vibe and chills. I love that. I NEED to see this band live!

Pink Velvet Krush - band promo photo - 2015 - #33PVKHVMMO03

If you take the classic Hard Rock atmosphere (aka) 80’s Arena Rock, Bon Jovi’s New Jersey album with Salty Dog and mix it all together, you get… Pink Velvet Krush. Maybe I’m getting too nostalgic or something, still, Pink Velvet Krush come packaged with enough relevancy and talent to challenge many current and well-known Hard Rock bands on the scene today. Metal be thy name. – Stone

PINK VELVET KRUSH includes former Gene Loves Jezebel drummer Joe Larsen, former Steelheart/Britny Fox guitarist Greg Polcari, former Dust and Bones guitarist Sean Quidgeon, former Vaudeville vocalist Doug ‘Savage’ Ramey, and former Sacred Edge bassist Shane West.

F.S.O.A. – Track List: 1. Nothin’ To Lose, 2. Take My Life, 3. F.S.O.A. (Fifty Shades Of Anything), 4. These Chains, 5. Obsession

U.D.O. “Decadent” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

UDO - Decadent - promo album cover pic - #201501

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

4.5 metal-fists-4-5-album-reviews-metal-odyssey

On February 3rd, Decadent, the fifteenth studio album from Germany’s legendary U.D.O. was released, via AFM Records. I’ll readily admit that this is one of the finest U.D.O. albums ever, with what I consider a whole lot more melodic interplay going on between the guitars and rhythm section. My favorite song on Decadent is Mystery and it’s a melodic Heavy Metal classic already, in my Metal world. This entire Decadent album sounds classic to me and makes for a formidable follow-up to 2013’s Steelhammer studio album.

Drummer Franceso Jovino is an awesome presence on Decadent and has since parted ways with the band. Udo Dirkschneider’s son and band drum tech, Sven Dirkschneider, has since been hired on as the new drummer.

As with AC/DC and Motörhead, fans of U.D.O. are gonna know what they’ll get from this band. With that said, there is a more open spaced vibe about Decadent than previous U.D.O. albums; where the songs sound as if they’ve been crafted for a more widespread consumption of Heavy Metal fans. No worries, this new U.D.O. album is no commercial ticket to Hollywood’s good old boys club. The big guitar sounds on this album are equivalent to an endless bottle of psyche-you-out elixir!

Below. check out the fabulous song Pain:

There’s more rhythm than crunch on Decadent and the great Udo Dirkschneider sings with an enthusiasm that I noticed quickly from the start; this is not a Heavy Metal legend that is forcing his vocals for the sake of making the record. Udo sings as if he is prepared for a world-wide arena tour and his band shall take a back seat to no one. Honestly, this Decadent album plays out that fantastic. It only takes a couple of thorough listens to Decadent for me to realize that Udo Dirkschneider is not interested in resting on any Metal laurels. I respect that to the fullest!

Throw in the fact that all twelve songs are worthy of their own music video and I do declare this being an album of SONGS. Decadent is a grand example of how a Heavy Metal band should leave all the artificial flavors and fillers behind and focus on composition and lyrics. The title track, PainSecrets In ParadiseUnder Your Skin and Untouchable are five other standout songs that really soar for my Metal soul. Very well done, once again, U.D.O.! Metal be thy name – Stone.

BAD GUYS – “Bad Guynaecology” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Bad Guys - Bad Guynaecology - promo album cover pic - #2014BGMO

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

4.5 metal-fists-4-5-album-reviews-metal-odyssey

Bad Guynaecology from London’s Bad Guys will be released on March 16th of 2015, via Riot Season Records. That’s a picture of me, on the above album cover, from my early wrestling days. Just kidding. This album is a skull stomping listen and I equate Bad Guynaecology to a steak, beer and potato dinner with extra steak and extra beer. Yes, it’s very filling with its meaty riffs and foundation shifting rhythm section. The clean and robust vocals of Stuart London are in-your-face, just like this band’s music is. Bad Guys are a band to keep on your Metal radar. If you don’t have a Metal radar, then you’re shit-out-of-luck.

From their entertaining lyrics to their relentless and massive sound, no instrument is faded to the back and there’s no annoying excess of sonic fuzz going on either, on Bad Guynaecology. The widespread heaviness of sound from Bad Guys is so vital to underscore; it’s easy to call this album a herculean listen. With lyrics about stealing a toy car from a Toys “R” Us in the album opener, Crime, along with the second track, Prostitutes (Are Making Love In My Garden), there exists a grand sense of humor within the ranks of Bad Guys, indeed.

Bad Guys - promo band pic - #2015BGMO0221

Bad Guys can surely reach an impressive cross-section of Heavy Rock and Metal fans; there’s plenty of Stoner, early Black Sabbath and Danzig meets Clutch meets Orange Goblin meets C.O.C. influence to delight in, on this album. There are eight songs on Bad Guynaecology and the closing track, No Tomorrow, is the epic song on this album; it clocks in at a whopping 11:47 and is a headbanging, glorious, guitar-driven and roaring last course.

I might add that the fifth track, Reaper and the seventh track, Motorhome, radiate all the credentials of being Punk(ish) songs in the vein of early Motörhead’s style of Rock ‘N’ Roll. The sixth track, Fabled Succubus, is a freaking jam-packed Stoner feast. Putting all musical influences that I hear (and it could just be me hearing it for Metal sakes) aside, Bad Guys have a convincing aura of originality. Bad Guys are that band I always hope to find out about so I can brag about them and feel like a big shot. Bad Guys can take a bow and hopefully will know, someday, that they’ve made Stone very happy. Metal be thy name . – Stone

WILL Z. “Dark Tales Of Will Z.” – A Metal Odyssey Album Review

Will Z. - Dark Tales Of Will Z. - Promo album cover pic - #2014DPRMO

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

Press release info and Metal Odyssey review to follow below:

Having made music across a mind-bending large number of genres, from Hard Rock through Acid-Folk to Baroque Pop, multi-instrumentalist Will Z. has now turned his attention to the world of Occult Rock. Gaining inspiration from the strange and psychedelic world of Syd Barrett and the doomy leanings of early Black Sabbath, he was addicted to as a teenager, he created Dark Tales Of Will Z., exploring new territory in the musician’s repertoire.

This album is a collection of dark electric numbers, originally intended for the final part of his previous album, 12 Visions, and songs composed from 1997 to 1999, when Will Z. was a teenager.

Metal Odyssey Review:

This new album from Will Z. was released back on September 15th of 2014, via HeadSpin Records and I’ll readily admit it’s a very cool musical surprise I never expected to have drop upon my brain. Many of the best music artists out there today are either underground or completely unknown; Will Z. should rightfully be known.

I find Dark Tales Of Will Z. to remind me of all those wonderful Saturday mornings of watching Creature Feature when I was a kid, during the late 70’s. This album is something else, cause while I listen to it I envision myself going back in time in a very enjoyable way. This Will Z. album is retro in its vibes, style and sound, with Occult Rock as its genre, therefore I get to understand what Iron Butterfly might have sounded like if they recorded today. There’s also a touch of very early Uriah Heep that jumps out at me from some of the songs on this album; then again, that might just be me.

Will Z. - Dark Tales Of Will Z. - Promo album cover pic - #2014DPRMO

Spacey and psychedelic swirls of sound, with an unending journey of dreamlike atmospheres, coupled with Doom riffs, chilling chants and darkened sonic passages are awaiting you, courtesy of Will Z. and I’ve been won over! I never knew this guy existed beforehand and now I’m a fan! There truly is a lot going on musically on this album and it will be one for me to listen to dozens of times in order to take it all in; and that’s a good thing. In my Metal opinion, this album can very well be the soundtrack to a Space Western movie or even a Rob Zombie directed psychotic thriller.

I commend Will Z. on this musical package of ingenious Rock. His multi-instrumental abilities show no limitations and his vocals are (at times) stuff of Chris Goss from Masters Of Reality fame. I highly recommend Dark Tales Of Will Z. to all those who yearn for something different, an album that is still dark and creepy musically and takes you on a surreal path to music’s land of delight. Metal be thy name. – Stone

DISSIDENT CLONEState Of Dysphoria will be released on March 17th, 2015, via Tridroid Records. This is a 4 song EP that blasts its way through with the sonically mixed trio of Metal, Thrash and Punk. The duo that comprises Dissident Clone are: Patrick Morris on guitar/vocals and Chad Brunsell on drums.

I will admit without hesitation that this is one freaking fun EP to listen to! Underground, raw and retro all the way through, this EP is worth that full jar of rainy day beans you’re willing to let go of. Not only musically do Dissident Clone play the Metal, Thrash and Punk combination; Patrick Morris adjusts his vocals very capably based on which style is being played.

DCIM100GOPRO

Dissident Clone packs an enormous wallop in just these 4 songs, I am very delighted to say. There’s even some groove Metal and haunting riffage going on with their song Eye Of The Wound. Savvy musicians that have compiled a blue-chip EP are Dissident Clone. I highly recommend to all who appreciate music that kick-starts the party into a ruckus. Metal be thy name. – Stone

GHOULGOTHA “The Deathmass Cloak” – A Raging And Wicked, Blackened, Death Doom Metal Album!

4 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metalfistredbckgrndsmall4

GHOULGOTHA The Deathmass Cloak has been made available, on January 13th, via the Dark Descent website. This group was formed and is based in San Diego, California. GHOULGOTHA do strike the Death Metal hammer down, more than likely splitting speakers and skulls, across the lands, from their debut album. My Metal God almighty, is this album molasses heavy!

Overall, The Deathmass Cloak plays out as a Blackened Death Metal collides with calamitous Doom Metal listen. Heavy as King Kong’s monster-sized, congealed shit and fused with down tempo Death Metal are best to describe this album’s songs. GHOULGOTHA have won me over due their honing in on their own sound and by not following the leader within the Death Metal universe. There are hoards of riffs, that summons the same Metal Gods that have looked down upon Black Sabbath with appreciation and trust me, these guitar parts are CHUNKY.

Ghoulghota - promo band photo - Nov - 2014 - #33GDDM

I have found The Deathmass Cloak to be a rather diverse listen in Death Metal, where both Old Schoolers and newbies of the Modern era should both walk away feeling some deathly Metal fulfillment from GHOULGOTHA’s creativity. The all-encompassing Death Metal vibe on this album is just an overall treat for my senses; GHOULGOTHA has a downbeat aura to their sound that just locks me in, man.

The sonic surprises of both the album’s intro of Solar Awakening and closer, Levitate Within The Curse, are stuff of genius for a Death Metal band; very impressive musical ideas were obviously fulfilled there. I’ll leave that last thought as something you’ll have to hear for yourself, it’s too good to give away. Metal be thy name. – Stone

Nocturna - Lucidity - Promo EP Cover - #2015NCM

4.5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

Metal fists - 4.5 - album reviews metal odyssey

Releasing on February 17th is the self-released and debut EP, Lucidity, from the UK’s Symphonic Metal Band: Nocturna. I have enjoyed this six song EP very much, to the point where I feel relieved to get this Nocturna review up on this blog for others to read about. Firstly, sonic quality is ever-present throughout this EP. Secondly, lead vocalist and guitarist James Davis reminds me of Rush legend Geddy Lee, with his harmonious, clean and pronounced vocals.

To say this band will go far is not a stretch by any means. Nocturna are a Metal treat to listen to, with their musicianship, songwriting and catchy melodies, all wrapped up into a delicious aural celebration of Symphonic Metal. With just the right touch of progressiveness in their music, Nocturna have a talent for the surprise with their songs. The epic closer on this EP, Cast Assured, showcases the diverse vocal and musical styles that Nocturna is all about.

Nocturna - promo band photo - 2014 - #122114

Tom Frost on guitar is bona fide impressive, with his abundant ability to shred. I love the atmosphere that Josh Vigus gives to the songs with his synthesizer, creating an air of emotions that swirl about so very pleasingly, even while a blazing guitar solo is being executed. Ryan Palmer on bass and Phil Barber on drums are an exciting listen alone, these cats master their craft. Fans of European Power Metal should have no problem digging what Nocturna is all about either. Yes, I highly recommend Nocturna and their debut EP Lucidity; I cannot be more honest than that. METALLICA ‘Beyond Magnetic’ – Thrashing Raw, Rough & Tough, As This Legendary Band Was Supposed To Be In The First Place

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal albums with tags , , , , , , , on February 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

METALLICA – This Beyond Magnetic four song EP (Warner Bros.) is Thrashing raw, rough, tough and minus Lou Reed. This is the way a Metallica album of any amount of songs should be like. The songs are a reminder that releasing demos or anything rough or close to, is not such a bad idea after all… especially if you are of the legendary status of Metallica. During those golden years of early 80’s Thrash Metal, when tape trading and 8-tracks were commonplace, hearing those subtle and not so subtle mistakes in vocals along with distortion was never the sign of the apocalypse.

Any old school fan of Motörhead and/or Venom realizes the true essence and magic of the unpolished sound versus the unnecessary polished and (gulp) over polished product. The same Metal school of thought holds 100% true for old school fans of Metallica as well. Or, should I dare say, pre-Black album fans of Metallica. What Metallica has given the fans of both yesterday and today, is an EP that re-establishes the truth that they can write and play Thrash Metal with the same enthusiasm and bad-to-the-bone attitude as they once did for Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning and Master Of Puppets.

I’m not the first to think or state this, yet, can Beyond Magnetic be the olive branch that Metallica is holding out towards us fans who made them world-famous and rich in the first place? I’ve yet to meet or know personally, anyone who has actually rocked-out to Lulu and anyone out there who has, undoubtedly has an extensive ABBA library of vintage vinyl that psyches them out too. If Beyond Magnetic is the Thrashin’ olive branch that Metallica is handing out, then I’m taking such olive branch and saying to this iconic band: THANK YOU.

Has Metallica been forgiven by me for such an avant-garde move with Lulu? Frankly, any artist of any artform can create what they wish. However, when you are of the magnificent influence and fame that Metallica is, this band should realize by now that us old school fans who were with them from the onset have feelings too. We don’t appreciate having our Metal vibes messed with. Beyond Magnetic makes me feel like everything is okay again between me and Metallica. Sound strange? Not to me. Music of any genre can touch the soul in ways that is unexplainable to even overpaid lab scientists. Lulu is the equivalent of McDonalds serving french fries without salt and their hamburgers without buns. Lulu is equal to the beer industry only producing non-alcoholic product.

Beyond Magnetic is Metallica being, well, Metallica once again. I only chuckle when I see that Rick Rubin is credited as being the producer for Beyond Magnetic. What in the world was there for Rick Rubin to produce? Let’s be real. Sorry Rick Rubin, I wasn’t born in 1999. Once Metallica can shed the billion dollar club from getting their claws and names associated with their work, then Metallica will be giving us fans their best work yet. Death Magnetic was a fine Thrash Metal release, only the smooth and polished production that coated that album took away from the mystique of Metallica keeping it real.

If Beyond Magnetic is a “test” that Metallica has launched, then said test is a success to my ears and Metal soul. These guys know fully what the majority of their “loyal” fans want from them, when it comes to their brand of Thrash Metal. Please Metallica, shed away those “fair weather” fans of yours and realize that you can release your next two or three studio albums being this raw, rough and F’n tough.

I am one of those fans of Metallica that can’t afford million dollar works of fine art. Oh, Metallica, let your billion dollar Hollywood fan club and disloyal post-Black album fanbase come to grips that you are truly the kick-ass and defiant band of Metalhead musicians you once were when it all first started. Beyond Magnetic is your stepping stone, Metallica, to waving goodbye to the kowtowing to that elitist establishment that we true Metalheads are not welcomed by. Thank you again, Metallica, for remembering that old school Thrash Metal will never say die. Metal be thy name.

PHARAOH – TEN YEARS EP: This Is American Power Metal… Loud, Proud and Heavy Hitting

Posted in classic heavy metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal bands, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, Power Metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 3, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

PHARAOH: TEN YEARS EP – American Power Metal is well represented when a band such as Pharoah exists. Seriously. The six songs on the Ten Years EP are a strong representation of just how excellent the musicianship of Pharaoh is. Metal truth be told, I wish this was a 12 song album, Pharaoh hammers out their one-of-a-kind Metal sound that well. This is a durable band with mighty Metal experience (see band lineup below) and this experience comes through remarkably well on each song.

The Classic Heavy Metal feel and vibes are unmistakable as I listen to Ten Years. Pharaoh plays their American-made Power Metal with relevant muscularity, with melodic moments flourishing throughout their sound.  One Metal constant about Pharaoh is their ability to sound raw and tough, with an old school sensibility. It’s this raw toughness in the Metal mix that adds to Pharaoh’s mystique, for me.

Ten Years will be released on June 7th, 2011, on Cruz Del Sur. This EP contains two unreleased songs from the Be Gone (2008) recording sessions, two tracks previously released only as a bonus 7″ and two cover songs: Slayer’s Tormentor and New Model Army’s White Light. Ten Years sets the Metal stage for the forthcoming and fourth studio album from Pharaoh, which is scheduled for release later in 2011.

Pharaoh does a standup  job at covering Slayer’s Tormentor, with no slippage on the speed factor on both guitar and the rhythm section. Tim Aymar may not be Tom Araya on vocals, still he embellishes this song with the necessary searing notes, leathery vocals and pissed-off attitude. Tim Aymar can hit the high notes with ease as well as delivering gritty, old school tones. A great example of just how diverse Tim’s vocals are is the title track Ten Years. This song is a Metal showcase for Tim’s vocals, there’s no doubt to my ears about that.

The thick and melodic sounds of Matt Johnsen’s guitar are totally enjoyable. Matt’s flirtation’s and nod’s to Classic Speed Metal are apparent and very welcomed to my Metal lovin’ ears. Matt Johnsen has his own signature tone happening on guitar and perhaps should be looked upon as one of Metal’s best kept secrets.

Pharaoh has always been a dynamite Power Metal band, it’s time for scores of Metal fans out there to realize just how excellent a band they truly are. I highly recommend all of Pharaoh’s works from the past and this Ten Years EP. Pharaoh was formed back in 1997 and there hasn’t been a better time than now to be catching onto their sound. Classic Heavy Metal and American Power Metal lives… and Pharaoh carries these two sub-genre’s torches with Metal pride.

PHARAOH on Ten Years EP:

Tim Aymar – vocals (Control Denied)

Matt Johnsen – guitar (Fool’s Game, Dawnbringer)

Chris Kerns – bass

Chris Black – drums (Dawnbringer, Superchrist, High Spirits, ex-Nachtmystium)

RAY LAMONTAGNE and the PARIAH DOGS – “GOD WILLIN’ & THE CREEK DON’T RISE” CAPTURES STORYTELLING THROUGH SONG

Posted in classic rock, folk rock music, metal odyssey, Music, music reviews, rock music, rock music news, rock music reviews with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 26, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

RAY LAMONTAGNE and the PARIAH DOGS – If music is the soul of mankind and a man needs to mellow out his soul, then Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs are a band to drift off to. With that said, anyone who really knows Stone, realizes that besides being a Metalhead-Rockaholic, I’m also an admirer of quality music of any genre. Doesn’t the word “genre” come across as intellectual sometimes? It is a “must” word to use when you have a blog about… music. I’ve never been bashful to use this word, Metal be thy name. Well… onward to Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs album – God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise.

There are those moments in my life where I turn to some good old fashioned Easy Listening music to chill out my senses. Why do I need to “chill out my senses”? Really, I don’t have a clinical answer for this, other than soothing sounds of music and vocals can relax me and make me look at my life from a different angle. The vocals of Ray LaMontagne I find to be somewhat captivating, it’s almost as if he sings the way he damn well feels and never gave a damn about trying to fit in with any specific group of contemporary male vocalists.

Besides being the vocalist for his band The Pariah Dogs on this album, Ray LaMontagne also plays acoustic guitar and harmonica. The acoustic guitar can justifiably emit as distinct and powerful a message through it’s tone as it’s muscular counterpart… the electric guitar. Soft Rock or as it’s also called, Easy Listening, has always benefited from the mellow side of an acoustic guitar. Folk Rock’s foundation is centered around the acoustic guitar and this new Ray LaMontagne album exploits the easy listening sound of Folk Rock to it’s ultimate potential. Ray’s vocals and the acoustic guitar are like soul mates to one another, the combination of the two brings about reflections of what the song is conveying lyrically as well as emotionally.

As I listen to New York City’s Killing Me, the mental imagery of the New York City sky-scape stays with me. I see the subway, crowded streets and Summer time smog as Ray sings about how this city is killing him. I love New York City myself, still I can understand how some visitors to The Big Apple could easily not become acquainted with it’s social pace and maximized energy. God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise has a Pedal Steel played by both Eric Heywood and Greg Leisz, it’s a sound that just hits me perfectly. I just seem to experience that “open country field” feeling while listening to this song, the Pedal Steel only helps to interpret this all the more for me.

Beg Steal Or Borrow is as blatantly fabulous of a song as there could be on this album. The tempo, beat and totality of sound resonating from The Pariah Dogs reminds me of an early ’70’s Fleetwood Mac. I can easily understand there being some Fleetwood Mac influence within the musical veins of Ray LaMontagne or any of his band members.

Are We Really Through is a somber ballad that is about… breaking up with someone. Ray’s vocals on this sad sounding song has an unbelievable Joe Cocker quality. Trust me, Ray LaMontagne is no copycat vocalist to my ears. Just think for a second as to how difficult it would be, to even try to sing like the legendary Joe Cocker. The vocals of Ray LaMontagne spill over these songs, as natural and free as a waterfall spilling over moss covered river stone. Often times, the word “unique” is overused, therefore, I shall state Ray’s vocals are stunningly unique.

To think that maybe Ray LaMontagne is a fan of Neil Young’s Harvest album is a credible thought. The mellowfied Country Rock that sticks it’s happy face out during this album during such songs as Old Before Your Time and For The Summer, comes as a welcomed listen for my retrospective ears and thoughts. These two songs would have been a smash for AM radio back in those satin days of the ’70’s. The interesting aspect of Old Before Your Time and For The Summer is that they are realistically relevant now.

Like Rock & Roll And Radio opens with Ray playing the harmonica, setting the stage for what I would consider his best vocals on this album. Ray is a storyteller and he tells stories through his songs like he has been doing this for decades. There are moments when I have to look at the liner notes of God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise, look at the photos of Ray and make sure he’s not a legend from the early ’70’s.

Devil’s In The Jukebox is a glistening finish to an album that was already glistening. The back country woods sound, feel and foot stompin’ character to this song makes it a prize worth listening to repeatedly, making me wish this song would just carry on for another five minutes or more. It’s quite obvious that Ray LaMontagne has a skilled band of musicians behind him. The Pariah Dogs compliment Ray’s vocals as if it was meant to be and it was written to happen this way, hundreds of years ago, on a scroll.

Not to sound as a wise guy here, yet as I listen to God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise, the feeling that overrides me from these ten songs are that of AM gold. These songs, practically this entire album is one big hit. If I am to point out one song that doesn’t “do it” for me, it’s Are We Really Through. Regardless of how I feel, this sad song might just touch someone differently with it’s meaning. These are the songs that I don’t mind hearing while taking a long ride in the country or while reading a good book. To listen to this album while sitting on my back patio and staring up at the blue Summer sky, while looking over my gardens and enjoying a couple of cold brews, is on my to-do list.

* God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise was released on August 17, 2010, on RCA. This album is the fourth studio release for Ray LaMontagne and first album being named alongside his band The Pariah Dogs.

KOPEK “WHITE COLLAR LIES” – DEBUT ALBUM IS A PRESENT & FUTURE STANDOUT OF MODERN ROCK

KOPEK – Each era seems to have one, two or maybe three “new” Rock bands that illuminate with an unexpected specialness. Dublin Ireland’s Rockin’ trio named Kopek is special to my ears. It is 2010, and a whole new era of Rock ‘N’ Roll has just begun. Sure, my ears may have some Rock ‘N’ Roll mileage on them, only what I hear in the music from Kopek is Modern Rock that isn’t just shunning that dreadful and uninvited guest named the “status quo”… Kopek has obliterated it with their debut album – White Collar Lies.

The lyrics, song writing, musicianship and Modern Rock angst I hear on White Collar Lies, all points to the direction of Kopek one day becoming bigger than they could ever dream of being. As long as Kopek does not lose sight of keeping their music’s intentional and unintentional sound, feel and message within the parameters of soul and passion, all the while saturating it with pulsating modernism, they may very well be an iconic example of Rock influence in 2020. A momentary sigh of relief came upon me, after my very first listen through of White Collar Lies… there just isn’t any Pop accessibility happening in the music of Kopek. Thank God.

Certainly, the first single from White Collar Lies, Love Is Dead, most credibly will garner enough mainstream attention without a doubt. Once anyone unfamiliar with Kopek listens to Love Is Dead, they shall forever and always know who Kopek is. A personal and emotional Mod Rock march to psyche-out madness, may very well erupt in the streets, if Love Is Dead was played loud upon a giant metropolis. That would probably be a sight to see and doesn’t sound too far fetched, especially once Love Is Dead begins it’s Rockin’ and groovy Modern takeover of your soul.

If I was in charge of handing down the “first single” from White Collar Lies, it would be Cocaine Chest Pains. This opening track on Kopek’s debut not just establishes them as a refreshing and viable Mod Rock Band, this song let’s it be known that Kopek can Rock quite Hard. The song – White Collar Lies is a show stopper in and of itself. The lyrics are applaudable, with Kopek putting a spotlight of despicable shame on corporate greed and selfishness. Kopek plays music that makes me feel like I’m supposed to stand up and be counted, with a seasoned attitude of musicianship radiating from every note, from every song.

It is not difficult to find myself doing a semi-headbang to the Mod Rock of Kopek. Fever is a song that makes my Metalhead soul peek out the cracks and wonder what the hell is going on. Fever should, with it’s melodic foot stomping and Hard Rock influenced edginess, be another single embraced by the whole darn world too. Floridian is the up-tempo ballad that is highlighted by it’s ability to be melodic beyond belief. Inspiring melodies and just brazenly memorable is Floridian, making for guess what? Another potential single from this ultra-dynamic debut album called White Collar Lies.

The trio of Kopek play their instruments so well, it is almost too easy to succumb to, while letting my mind wander off to the lyrics, energy, spirit and mood that Kopek has created throughout White Collar Lies. In the end, the music on White Collar Lies… albeit Modern Rock dominate, still has flashes of Alternative, Rock and at times Hard Rock influences, dictating from beginning to end, that Kopek really can play like their lives depend on it. Lead vocalist Daniel Jordan may very well carry you off, into an excitingly edgy and engagingly powerful world of listening delight. There is a confident streak in Daniel’s vocals, that exhibits the strength in Kopek’s songs.

Kopek laid out their path of music for my ears to journey on, little did I know of the unexpected Rock ‘N’ Roll finds I would encounter along the way while listening to White Collar Lies. Let the uniqueness of Kopek’s Mod Rock blended with Hard edged crunchiness take your ears for a much overdue surprise of Rock newness. Believe me, once you’ve listened to White Collar Lies for yourself, you might very well be thinking this band is special as well.

MADINA LAKE – “Attics to Eden” is an Alternative Rock detour to take

Posted in Album Review, alternative rock bands, alternative rock music, alternative rock music albums, cool album covers, current alternative rock albums, current alternative rock music, Hard Rock, hard rock music 2009, post punk rock music 2009, Rock, rock music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 13, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

main-150Madina Lake “Attics to Eden” caught my attention upon it’s release, (May 5, 2009), by the front cover artwork.  Anytime a band puts thought and/or creativity to use, with their album cover art, just motivates me to investigate the music inside the album further. I ventured to RoadRunner Records.com to give a listen to a few of the songs from “Attics to Eden”. I knew going in that Madina Lake is not a full throttle Metal band… not a Metal band at all… far from it. Madina Lake are an above decent, Alternative/Post Punk Rock Band with plenty of quality songs, in my Metal opinion. The key to expanding my Heavy Music collection and interests is to just plain research an album before you buy it. I am quite content at picking up Madina Lake’s newest album, both the music and lyrics are well thought out and written. Madina Lake has obviously paid attention to detail, with song structure, on “Attics to Eden”. There are no run ons or whining with these songs either, (again, in my Metal opinion). It seems to me, that Madina Lake was not interested in putting any filler songs on this album, that is always a great move for any band. What I walk away from, each time I listen to Madina Lake, is that they walk that fine line of being both commercially accessible and extremely current sounding, while still grasping and holding onto, enough hardness in their music to satisfy my taste

Madina Lake "Attics to Eden" album promo imageMadina Lake is obviously a younger band, yet the current and/or new textured sound to their songs is what differentiates them from being gobbled up by the status quo. It is 2009, I not only want to stay current with the younger bands… I need to. There is that part of me that does not want to be left behind in this vast world of Heavy Music. Honestly, there are stacks of Heavy bands out there today, that are fresh and new that just don’t do it for me. My not acknowledging on Metal Odyssey the bands that I feel are bland and yawn inducing, saves me from wasting precious time. Madina Lake is no waste of time for my ears. Taking a melodic and harmonious Alternative Rock detour, from the very heavy and Extreme Music that I listen to regularly, is essential for me, doing so keeps me musically grounded and open minded. Madina Lake “Attics to Eden” is one of those Alternative Rock detours I am referring to. To make an analogy, it is like enjoying watching horror movies, I need to watch a comedy and/or suspense thriller every so often as well. (Throw in a History Channel documentary too).

“Never Take Us Alive” is the opening song on this album, the upbeat Rock feel and inspired lyrics makes this album start off on the right note. “Statistics” is a steady rocker for me, along with “Let’s Get Outta Here” if I am to choose a few notables. Madina Lake took some influence from The Offspring, on “Let’s Get Outta Here”, especially with the chorus. “Legends” and “Criminals” are strong contenders for being my favorite songs on the entire album, both examples of the fortified confidence level that Madina Lake plays at musically. “Through The Pain” has “that hit” sound and feel seeping from it’s every nook and cranny. “Attics to Eden” is without question, a melodic and musically sound song trip. Madina Lake touching on the human spirit lyrically only pronounces more relevance with each listen, even for this middle aged Metalhead.

Madina Lake, as they appear on “Attics to Eden”: Nathan Leone on vocals, Matthew Leone on bass, Mateo Camargo on guitars & programming and Dan Torelli on drums.
