KRAMPUS – Kronos’ Heritage: 3 Song EP Admirably Blazes With Both Melodic and Extreme Folk Metal

Posted in Extreme Metal, folk metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 26, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

KRAMPUS – When it comes to Folk Metal, the European vibe and feel is an unavoidable experience for me. Italy’s Krampus takes their very own beauty and the beast style with Melodic Death Folk Metal and serves it up in a manner so splendid and Extreme, that it’s downright irresistable to my Metal senses. Whoever says woodwinds are not Metal must be taken for a long walk behind the abandoned tool shed and be given to the wolves. The flute may lend beauty to the Folk Metal that Krampus plays, only it serves as a more important and sturdy foundation to this unique sound that swirls about freely amidst the beast, which I’ll also call: the heaviness.

While I listen to Krampus, I often times cannot believe I’m hearing such a marriage of musical instruments come together so astonishingly and simultaneously melodic and brutal. Krampus brings their brand of Melodic Death Folk Metal to a level of credibility that is overwhelmingly convincing. If a three song EP is going to capture anyone’s attention, it must deliver from every musical angle. Kronos’ Heritage does deliver continuously in a melodic approach while Extreme Death Metal vocals are a dominant factor. A compelling element about the style of Krampus, is the vocals never bury the music and vice versa.

While the flute keeps time with the accelerated beats of the rhythm section as the guitar riffs are being fired about, Krampus plays Metal at break-neck speed. All this is while any tempo shifts and time changes that occur, seem to do so with a fluidity that seamlessly fools the consciousness. Krampus is so worth checking out if you haven’t done so already. This is a band that is playing some very real and extraordinary Metal. Krampus embellishes their songs with amazing balance, with their skillful musical respect towards both melody and extremity. That commands my upmost Metal respect.

TWISTED SISTER – My Favorite Album From This Legendary Heavy Metal Band Is…

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

TWISTED SISTER – I’m sure many of you by now are wondering which Twisted Sister album is Stone’s favorite? Then again, countless numbers of you aren’t wondering about this at all. Well, my favorite Twisted Sister album of my entire Metal lovin’ life is… well, um, it’s a tie. You see, there is no other way around it. That’s it. My decision on this Metal matter was made many years ago. Make that many decades ago. Under The Blade from 1982 and You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll from 1983 are IT when it comes to Twisted Sister for me.

I embraced Twisted Sister before MTV finally realized they really did Rock. I felt like I was missing out on the band that pummeled my eardrums into Metal bliss with their raw and muscular East Coast Metal that I listened to on their first two albums, once Stay Hungry and Come Out And Play pushed Twisted Sister to the forefront as MTV and chart favorites. Maybe it was the non-commercial mystique of the first two Twisted Sister albums that won me over from the onset. Sure, You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll was released on Atlantic Records, still, that wasn’t an instant recipe for a commercial Metal album. Don’t get me wrong, I was as pumped up as any Metalhead on the planet when Twisted Sister became a household name and Dee Snider stood up to the venomous dictatorship known as the PMRC.

It’s the raw power and back alley vibe that these first two Twisted Sister albums scream with, an almost underground feel swirls about the songs on both. This was Twisted Sister the Metal band that I’d crank up psychotically loud in my parent’s basement while the lyrics of We’re Gonna Make It, I Am (I’m Me), You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll and Day of the Rocker gave me super teenage powers. I would take those same super teenage powers and use them to get through a typical high school day of having my self-esteem receive its daily beating. My self-esteem during those teen years fought back and remained intact, courtesy of Twisted F’n Sister.

When I listened to the songs Under The Blade and Shoot ‘Em Down, I felt as if I was listening to the ultimate bad-ass band in the land. These two songs alone had me feeling like Twisted Sister could kick the shit out of my high school antagonists that picked on me, a fantasy back then that was beneficial Metal therapy for my mind. Twisted Sister was my friend all those years ago, (like so many bands I listened to), protecting me from self implosion while I struggled through those early teen growing pains.

Personal memories can become attached to any album. Regardless of how silly it may seem now, in reflecting on how Twisted Sister made an impact on me, it was those first two albums from this influential Metal band that moved me most. Only now I don’t need Twisted Sister to kick the shit out of anyone. Yes, Twisted F’n Sister and their first two studio albums were an integral part of making me the SMF that I am today. Metal be thy name.

Five METAL Songs and Albums From 2011 You Must Check Out!

Posted in doom metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on August 23, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

U.D.O. HAS COMETH BACK IN 2011 AND SET ME METAL STRAIGHT.

Five Metal Songs and Albums You Must Hear – I love Metal. No, I really love Metal. Therefore, I am indulging in a personal Metal duty in alerting you to five Metal songs and albums that are a must to hear during this Summer’s end of 2011. These fired-up Metal songs and kick-ass Metal albums are all released this year! My only two requests to you while listening to these five Metal songs and albums are: play ’em loud and let yourself get psyched-out ’cause METAL LIVES! By the way… I put U.D.O. – Rev Raptor at the top of this post ’cause it is an all-out, scorching blitz of Old School Metal. Hallelujah fellow Metalheads, unite and ring that F’n Metal bell.

SOURVEINFangs from Black Fangs – (Candlelight Records, released June 21, 2011)

Listening to Fangs from Sourvein is like receiving an open-handed Doom Metal slap to my face. Listening to the entire album Black Fangs is a double open-handed Doom Metal slap to my face. I like that. This song set me Metal straight the first time I heard it and it’s heavy as F’n molasses. The thick and massive guitar riffs from King James and the battering vocals of T-Roy are eye-popping and earth splitting. Throw in a rhythm section that seems intent on splitting the universe in half, just for good Metal measure. Fangs is not just a song to hear, it’s a song to experience and Black Fangs is a Metal destination for the Metalhead brain.

PENTAGRAMCall The Man from Last Rites (Metal Blade Records, released April 12, 2011)

Pentagram = Doom Metal. Pentagram is back with their 7th studio album Last Rites and my favorite song on this album is Call The Man. There is a Doom Metal groove happening on this song which has created quite a stir in my Metal saturated brain. Bobby Liebling has that ability to wrap this song around his vocals, making him the man. Listening to Call The Man and this entire album is like getting psyched-out by a late night thunderstorm, there’s just no other way for me to explain it. Metal be thy name.

SINISTER REALMThe Crystal Eye – (Shadow Kingdom Records – 2011)

Allentown Pennsylvania’s Metal warriors have an unbelievable ability to harness their Metal skills to create an album that is more potent with memorable songs than some Metal bands entire discography. The title track hasn’t just kicked my ass, it has kicked my ass with quantum Metal authority. The feel, vibe and Metal totality of this song flexes old school Metal in the vein of DIO and any other Traditional Metal icon you can think of. Yes, this song and album are that grand and Sinister Realm is that great.

FAIR TO MIDLANDMusical Chairs – (eOne Music, released July 12, 2011)

What makes Fair To Midland so damn special to me is their capacity to push the Metal envelope with musical experimentation. Are they Progressive? Alternative? Metal? Extreme? Hard Rock? Try all of the above. At the end of the day, Fair To Midland is an assorted listen into what sensational Heavy Music can sound like when a band decides to throw F’n caution to the F’n wind. After your first listen to Musical Chairs, you might want to breathe a sigh of relief knowing there is a band out there that crushes narrow-mindedness, when it comes to writing and playing the heavy stuff. Arrows & Anchors is a thorough listen into what can be successfully achieved, when a band doesn’t give a crap about what other bands are playing.

U.D.O.REV-RAPTOR – (AFM Records – released May 31, 2011)

Yes, Udo Dirkschneider is a living Metal legend in my Metal world. The Metal shelf life of his band U.D.O. has proven any and all negative critics wrong once again, with album #13 added to a discography that deserves a double horns to the air. The songs on Rev-Raptor are indicators that U.D.O. is still a Metal band to reckon with. My pick on this notable Metal album is Renegade. Fast, furious and delectably heavy is Renegade. This is THE song and THE album you want cranked up and shaking your world and the world outside… while the neighbors are having that stupid, annual, gargantuan picnic that you were not invited to.

METAL BE THY NAME.

LONG LIVE METAL.

The word “delectably” was used in this post.

GLORIOR BELLI: Band Issues The Great Southern Darkness Video Teaser

Posted in Black Metal, Extreme Metal, extreme music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 22, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

French Black Metal goliaths, GLORIOR BELLI, recently issued a video teaser for upcoming new full-length, The Great Southern Darkness. Check it out now at Revolvermag.com.

The Great Southern Darkness offers up 11 tracks that magnify  GLORIOR BELLI‘s finest qualities: Debilitatingly fast, yet simultaneously dark and swampy with all the Americana/Stoner/Blues elements the band and their fans have come to embrace. Said Revolver in an advance review of the record: “The album combines vicious Black Metal riffery with deep New Orleans Stoner grooves to create a Metal monolith that is equal parts northern blaze and southern trendkill.”

Formed in the suburbs of Paris during the close of 2002, what began as a noxious duo soon became an untamable beast, acting as a beacon for everyone looking to free themselves of the influence of the Demiurge. Lyrics and themes explored throughout the years reveal a sincere inclination for rebel-ism and a sense of poetry. Today, the name GLORIOR BELLI has garnered a stellar reputation in the Extreme music community for mixing desert rock textures with the brutal, ominous, doom-laden vibe typical of Black Metal. But don’t bother trying to restrain that which cannot be confined, for this is merely the greatest curse of the cosmic scheme.

The Great Southern Darkness is scheduled for a North America release on September 27, 2011 via Metal Blade Records.

Check out “Secret Ride To Rebellion” at the band’s official landing page, where you will also find pre-order details, HERE.

California-based extreme Prog-Metal band ANA KEFR have released the tour dates for their upcoming month-long U.S. tour in October-November, all in support of their recently released, critically acclaimed second full-length album “The Burial Tree (II)” (Muse Sick Records), the follow-up to 2009’s debut “Volume 1” (Muse Sick).

Regarding the tour, ANA KEFR frontman and keyboardist Rhiis D. Lopez commented: “Ana Kefr is a D.I.Y. band to the core, and this tour is an in-house job down to the smallest of details. There are plenty of bands constantly on the road, but the majority of the longer tours are backed by labels and booking agents. Our tour was organized by myself and Fonzie (Alphonso Jimenez, bass), and as such you’ll see we’re playing everything from larger stages to sweaty underground Metal bars. We’ve even organized the line-up on half of these shows and are seriously impressed by the enthusiasm and generosity of Metal-loving strangers. We can’t wait to meet everyone, share some beers and bang some heads!”

KRAMPUS – Releases “Kronos’ Heritage”: 3 Song EP

Posted in folk metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 20, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Italy’s fast rising Melodic Death Folk Metal band KRAMPUS have just released their highly anticipated follow-up to Shadows of Our Time in the form of a killer three song EP titled Kronos’ Heritage.

The band is coming off a Summer full of European Festivals and are looking to make waves again with this new release. KRAMPUS is at the forefront of the fast emerging Folk Metal scene and are a force to be reckoned with.

As with all of KRAMPUS‘s music, the band has a powerful message behind the lyrics as they deal with the ever-changing state of humanity, nature, and social issues.  As clearly seen in the lyrics, the band is adamant about making their fans aware of the current state of the world and bringing to light the need for change and for humanity to take responsibility for itself as the world heads into darker times.

In addition, the band will film a music video with director Andrea Guarascio (Elvenking, Caparezza) at the helm for the album’s title track, “Kronos’ Heritage”.

Aerosmith – Permanent Vacation: Released 24 Years Ago Today, August 18th, 1987

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 18, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

AEROSMITH – Back on August 18, 1987, Aerosmith had their ninth studio album, Permanent Vacation, release on Geffen Records. That was 24 years ago my fellow Rockaholics. Where were you 24 years ago? Were you born yet? Were you lost in the farthest region of the Amazon Rain Forest? Maybe you were like me, sleeping until noon everyday and partying until six in the morning. I couldn’t live like that now! Hell, as that ultra-classic Aerosmith song goes: Dream On.

Despite whatever you may have been doing, wherever that may have been, this Aerosmith album made quite the Hard Rock impact on MTV and FM radio back in 1987. I can recall seeing the music video for Dude (Looks Like A Lady) for the first time, all those years ago. I was semi-interested. It’s not a bad song, still it’s not Mama Kin either. I remember vividly the teary eyed ballad Angel being played on every FM Rock station every five minutes back then too. (Or so it seemed). Yuck.

Rag Doll. Once this song first hit my eardrums I was grimacing. I couldn’t figure out how Aerosmith could go from Sweet Emotion to sweet annoyance so swiftly. Yuck again. Hangman Jury is no better either. Overall, this is my least favorite Aerosmith album from their unquestionably legendary discography. Sure, Permanent Vacation has sold multi-million copies worldwide since it’s release date. Mainstream appeal back in 1987 resulted in overexposure, which equates to the masses wanting to run out and buy, just as it happens now in the Rock music world.

Heart’s Done Time, Magic Touch and Permanent Vacation are three songs on this album that I truly like. So all is not lost when it comes to Permanent Vacation being my least favorite Aerosmith album. I’ve always adored the heavier and harder sound that Aerosmith was and is so famous for. Would I recommend this album to a buddy? Nope. I would say buy the digital songs that you like individually instead.

Two years later, in 1989, Aerosmith released their tenth studio album Pump. I always gravitated toward Pump, really digging that album to this day. One thing is for certain, Aerosmith did catapult themselves into the Rock n’ Roll stratosphere with Permanent Vacation. Trust me, I will forever be an Aerosmith fan, nothing beats the classics this band churned out during those influential 70’s. When it comes to Permanent Vacation, I was and still am one of those fans who just wasn’t buying into the fast food approach that this album represented towards the song.

Aerosmith:

Steven Tyler – vocals, piano, harmonica

Joe Perry – lead guitar

Brad Whitford – rhythm guitar

Tom Hamilton – bass

Joey Kramer – drums, percussion

* Permanent Vacation was produced by Bruce Fairbairn.

Arizona based Death Metal band, APPARITIONS, is a new project consisting of bassist Griffin Kolinski and guitarist Brian Mcnulty from KNIGHTS OF THE ABYSS (Ferret Music). “When KNIGHTS OF THE ABYSS finished our last tour with CATTLE DECAPITATION, Brian and I were toying with this side project with some friends back home. As we went along it really just manifested itself into something that we wanted to pursue in a more serious direction” states Kolinski about the formation of the band.

APPARITIONS will be performing their first show on August 26th at the Clubhouse Music Venue in Tempe, AZ. They are currently working on booking dates for a West Coast regional tour to support their EP titled “The Human Collapse” due out this fall. ” We are real excited to see what people think of the material as it is a departure from what we were doing with KOTA” adds Kolinski.

APPARITIONS has just launched a new Facebook page and premiers their debut song entitled “Sky Splitter” featuring guest vocalist Tim Goergen of WITHIN THE RUINS (Victory Records).

Eclectic and Atmospheric Dark Metal duo TRILLION RED has become the first act to sign with upstart label badGod Music. The band’s  DIY debut EP, Two Tongues, (released earlier this year) will see distribution through the label in September and plans are in place for a full-length to see the light of day in 2012. Two Tongues is currently streaming in its entirety at www.stereokiller.com/trillionred

“Two Tongues EP combines all the dark ambience, progressiveness and flirtations with Extreme Metal…I kept envisioning a trek to the center of the Earth, just a few blocks from the gates of Hell itself…”Metal Odyssey

“Doomy, dark, creepy, ambient… different. If that description interests you in the slightest then check out what this San Francisco outfit has to offer.” – MetalSucks.net

Two Tongues EP – Track Listing:

No Visible Help (Hold Tight!)

Forging Two Tongues – A Reckoning

Right Over to the Helm

Lullaby

TRILLION RED is:

Patrick Brown – Vocals, keys, guitar, bass

Max – drums

BIO :

TRILLION RED is a new band in the Metal scene, but its unique style screams out as something new and refreshing amongst the plethora of redundant acts today. The band’s musical background diverges from past garage rock and dark metal bands.  The musical guts and themes to Two Tongues from written from 2007 through 2009 in San Francisco. The EP songs were completed, recorded, mixed and mastered in 2010.

THIN LIZZY – ICON Greatest Hits: 11 Songs Of Timeless, Classic Hard Rock

Posted in classic rock, classic rock songs, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THIN LIZZY – Released on June 21st, 2011, via Mercury Records is the Icon series of greatest hits installment of the ultra-legendary: Thin Lizzy. There are 11 songs on this Thin Lizzy compilation. Timeless, Revered, Classic Rock songs all. This past week, I bought this CD for two reasons: 1. I really dig Thin Lizzy and 2. I do not have every Thin Lizzy album on CD. Stone still swims among his vinyl and cassettes, therefore, Metal be thy name and ring that Old School F’n bell.

This Thin Lizzy CD set me back $7 (U.S.) and I’m happier than a pig in murky, stink ridden mud now that I own it. How can any of these Thin Lizzy classics ever grow stale? Impossible I say! These Thin Lizzy songs are the reason why the word “Classic” was put in front of the word “Rock”.

It is a difficult task in choosing which is my favorite Thin Lizzy song on this CD. I’ll go with Cowboy Song for now, then an hour later it is Jailbreak. Tomorrow it’s The Boys Are Back In Town as my top choice. You get the Metal picture.

Thin Lizzy – Icon Track Listing:

Whiskey In The Jar

The Rocker

Still In Love With You

Rosalie

The Boys Are Back In Town

Jailbreak

Cowboy Song

Borderline

Don’t Believe A Word

Bad Reputation

Dancing In The Moonlight (It’s Caught Me In It’s Spotlight)

Jani Lane – May He Rest In Peace

Metal Odyssey extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, band mates and fans of Jani Lane. The former lead singer of Warrant and Saints Of The Underground passed away on August 11, 2011. Jani Lane was only 47.

As a lead vocalist, songwriter and lyricist for Warrant, Jani Lane’s Hair Metal and Rockin’  identity could never be denied, especially on such Warrant album classics as 1989’s Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich and 1990’s Cherry Pie. Jani Lane’s music will live on for generations to enjoy. God Bless Jani Lane and may he rest in peace.

SOURVEIN: Original Bass Player To Rejoin Lineup

Posted in doom metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on August 12, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Cape Fear Doom kings, SOURVEIN, are excited to announce the return of original bassist, Joshua ”JC Fari” Crapo, who played with the band from 1993 – 2001 and again from 2003 – 2006. Fari held down the low-end duties on both SOURVEIN‘s self-titled full-length and the He’s No Good To Me Dead compilation (featuring SOURVEIN alongside Grief, Bongzilla, Negative Reaction and Subsanity) among other compilations as well as the Will To Mangle demos. Fari also played guitar on the band’s split with Buzzov*en in 1995.

Fari relocated to Austin after Hurricane Katrina flooded his New Orleans apartment and studio in 2005 and left the band in 2006, following a successful tour of the UK with Remesses, to focus on his family. Since then, he’s been raising his son and working as a recording engineer. As of this summer, Fari is finally able to commit to touring and recording with SOURVEIN full-time.

Fari will join vocalist T-Roy and co. for the band’s West Coast leg of the Black Fangs world tour in October.

Black Fangs was released via Candlelight Records on June 21st, 2011.

EYEHATEGOD – To Traumatize California This Weekend! European Live Footage Posted!

EYEHATEGOD – Last month, New Orleans’ own existential Hardcore Blues oddballs, EYEHATEGOD, successfully completed their near-month long Retox And Nihilism Over Europe Tour alongside Japanese doomers, Church Of Misery. The trek saw Louisiana’s favorite miscreants level over 20 cities, which included stops at Hellfest in France, Kriston Festin Spain, GSM Fest in Portugal, the Roskilde Fest in Denmark and the Stoned From The Underground Festival in Germany.
Commented Mike Williams of the experience: “We returned in mental puzzle pieces from a destructive, albeit highly functional European/Scandinavian tour with Church of Misery, bringing them to the usual EU haunts such as Paris, London, and Berlin etc… plus a few previously unvisited locales such as Helsinki and the former Soviet Bloc country Estonia. One highlight amongst many was playing in the middle of the people’s revolution in Athens, Greece and playing the almighty fests such as Stoned From The Underground and Hellfest. EYEHATEGOD performed new material on this educational insanity tour.”
Check out killer footage [filmed by mathiasnielsen666] of the band playing new song, “N’awlins Is The New Vietnam” at the Roskilde Festival HERE.
Closing out their summer of sonic devastation, EYEHATEGOD will spread their filth to the West Coast this weekend for two rare and special shows: The first will take place at the Oakland Metro Operahouse on Friday, August 12 with Impaled, Brainoil, Laudanum and others while the second will mark the kick-off of the long-anticipated and much talked-about Power The Riff Fest on Saturday, August 13 at the
Echo/Echoplex which will feature EYEHATEGOD, Pentagram,Winter, Pelican and more! California will never be the same….
EYEHATEGOD: California Weekend Invasion:
8/12/2011 Oakland Metro Operahouse – Oakland, CA w/ Impaled, Brainoil Laudanum, Badr Vogu, Hazzard’s Cure, The Burial Tide Doors @ 7:00pm [Info]
8/13/2011 Echo/Echoplex – Los Angeles, CA w/ Pentagram,  Winter, Pelican, Trap Them, All Pigs Must Die, Acephalix, Black Cobra, Skin Like Iron, Baptists, Masakari, Alpinist, Seven Sisters of Sleep, Aeges, Early Graves, Slave Doors @ Noon [TICKETS]
The band will play additional shows this Fall. Details to be announced soon… and if their lies are to be believed, 2012 will see the release of EYEHATEGOD‘s long-awaited new album. (Source: Earsplit PR)
