Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Sunday, September 30th, 2012

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on September 30, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Wanna know what recently released album has psyched-me-out-of-my-Rock-‘N-Metal-mind? Just look at the above album cover! No, it’s not just the cover that has me psyched; it’s the Hard Rockin’ sonic bliss that The Darkness are playing on Hot Cakes that has put me in such a whirlwind of glee! What an album of instantly memorable songs!

This is the third studio album from this amazingly fun British band from Lowestoft and it’s a gem to feed my ears with. This Hot Cakes album has me believing that good, old-fashioned Glam/Hard Rock is alive and well once again. Do yourself a favor and buy Hot Cakes, especially if you like your Hard Rock that kicks the politically correct school of thought right in the ass!

It’s hard to believe we will be entering October tomorrow! To me, it feels like Summer was put on fast forward. With that said, I am a huge fan of Autumn and the spooky swirls of Halloween. With Halloween falling on a Wednesday (hump day) this year, it will obviously fall within two days of two weekends. I imagine that’s pretty cool, especially if you’re planning a Halloween party; you’ll basically have two weekends to choose from for your ghoulish get-together!

Once Autumn and the Halloween season begins, there are select bands and/or albums that I’ll gravitate to all the more for those creepy Rockin’ vibes! One such band is Helloween and their 1985 full-length debut: Walls Of Jericho. A Helloween classic and a classic within the pages of Heavy Metal history, this album is, in my Metal opinion.

Everything about DANZIG just screams Halloween. Seriously. From Glenn’s music, to his band logo and album artwork. I once encountered a wise-old Metal troll along a treacherous and densely wooded path in the Northern woods of Pennsylvania. This troll stated to me: “Stone, y-y-you best g-g-get some DANZIG into y-y-your F’n ears d-d-during Halloween s-s-season.” I’ll have to admit, that wise-old Metal troll was no dumb-ass.

Other albums and bands that I’ll listen to in ushering in the Halloween season: King Diamond, the 1970 debut and self-titled album from Black Sabbath, MISFITS, Iron Maiden (especially their first 3 albums), White Zombie, Rob Zombie, Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, Zombiefication, Angel WitchSatyricon and… well, you get the Metal point!

Here’s a Metal news item of importance for all you REVERENCE fans out in Europe:

As reported on REVERENCE facebook on September 29th:

Reverence Cancel’s European Tour: To all the fans, promoters and venues, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are being forced to cancel our upcoming European tour. We were looking forward to playing for our fans and making new ones. This is something we don’t take halfheartedly and want you to know this is not the end of Reverence, we will definitely be heading to Europe in 2013. Although this seems like bad news we are taking this opportunity to begin writing new material for the next release and various other things to be heading your way in the months to come.”

Stone Says: REVERENCE is such a grand Classic Metal band! True Metal. If you haven’t picked up their debut album, When Darkness Calls, you are hereby told to do so! REVERENCE has easily earned themselves the “top-spot” for Greatest Metal Surprise Of 2012. Metal be thy name.

Metadox – Announces “Open Call for Vocalist”

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Metal, metal music, Music, Power Metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Frank Tosi, the driving force behind New York’s DesDemon, resurrects his band Metadox after the demise of DesDemon and announces an open call for a vocalist.

Originally established in 2001, Metadox had rose quickly in the New York metal circles when signing with Metal Mayhem Music, to opening for respected artists Dragonforce, Kamelot, and Moonspell.  The band imploded prematurely during their studio recording sessions in 2006. Frank Tosi mentions Metadox deserved a lot more than what was afforded at the time. I’m a little older now, I have more knowledge, contacts, and  I’m a much better musician now.  As much as I will always love and cherish the good points of what DesDemon became, I know Metadox will be much more appealing to a broader spectrum of metal fans.”

Metadox is currently holding vocalist auditions globally.  If interested and have the passion and the vocal range similar to: Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, King Diamond, Huntress, Slayer, or Firewind, then contact us. Frank Tosi states, “We are looking for someone who is seasoned, dedicated, have similar interests, able to front a band, and write quality lyrics”. Metadox will revamp their existing material and collaboratively write new music for pre-production of their debut release.

Provide some information about yourself, any audio, video, or EPK links.

All interested, please contact Frank Tosi at: Auditions@MetadoxMetal.com

GYPSYHAWK – “Hedgeking” (Official Video) And “Revelry & Resilience” Are Stone’s METAL Picks Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

GYPSYHAWK – Guitar driven. Cruising Rock ‘N Roll. Blue Collar, knuckle crackin’, foot stompin’ and beer drinkin’ good-times Heavy Rock. Old school. Did I mention guitar driven? A blend of Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock and Southern Rock never sounded so damn refreshingly cool. I’m talking about the new album released on Metal Blade Records (on August 28th) from California’s Gypsyhawk that’s titled: Revelry & Resilience. Essentially, Realistically, undoubtedly, unquestionably, this new Gypsyhawk album kicks pure, 100% Heavy Rockin’ ass.

There’s some heavy-duty classic Thin Lizzy vibes happening throughout Revelry & Resilience. Eric Harris on vocals and bass just “has a slick way” of reminding me of the late Phil Lynott. Don’t get me wrong, Eric Harris is musically his own man and Gypsyhawk dishes out heaping doses of original heavy sound. This Gypsyhawk band flat-out Rocks in such a glorious way, their songs, sound and style inspires me to shake away the bullshit stress that’s been hanging over my head for far too long.

I will share this: Gypsyhawk’s cover of Rick Derringer’s Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo is freakin’ great. Whoa! Let’s just say that I cannot get enough of this cover song from Gypsyhawk. These dudes nailed it! This classic song was meant to be covered by Gypsyhawk and belongs on their album, there’s no sliver of doubt in my Metal mind about that.

Man, I’m gonna tell you all right now… Gyspyhawk’s Heavy Rock ‘N Roll has gotten me psyched out of my brains! I absolutely love listening to Revelry & Resilience and couldn’t recommend this album more strongly to all my fellow Metal and Rockaholic brethren. Metal be thy name.

Take a listen (and look) below to the new and official video for Hedgeking. Check that. Take a dozen or so listens to Hedgeking! Crank this song up and thank the Rock ‘N Metal Gods that Gypsyhawk has created such a blazingly memorable song (and album) to feed our ears with!

THE DEVIL – Self-Titled Debut Set For North American Release On November 20th

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, instrumental metal, instrumental music, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 25, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Candlelight Records, in cooperation with The Silent City, today confirms November 20th as the North American release date for The Devil, the self-titled debut album from the London-based sextet. The masked, all-instrumental band self-produced the entire recording.

THE DEVIL is not a typical Metal band. Combining Traditional/Classic Heavy Metal with select historical, political and conspiracy-laden oracles, the anonymous masked and cloaked musicians present a cinematic soundscape that is sure to strike the fancy of the curious. The 13-track album was crafted at six different recording studios and possesses a sound that is unlike any other you will encounter. Earlier this year, the internationally assembled band launched the beginning of the album campaign via two select videos. Since initiation, over half a million YouTube views have been logged.

Two songs from The Devil have already been tapped for soundtrack inclusion; Extinction Level Event licensed to upcoming film E.S.P. expected late 2012 and Divinorium licensed to upcoming film The Fury. The Fury is being directed by James Colmer (Superman Returns, House of Wax, See No Evil, will feature Erica Leerhsen (Blair Witch Project, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) and is expected early 2013.

Director James Colmer comments on his attraction to THE DEVIL for the upcoming feature film. “Choosing a track for a feature film is often times a difficult task. For us it was a quest of finding a song that could convey the driving, thematic and ominous presence of this psychological thriller in the opening scenes. When I first heard ‘Divinorum,’ I immediately felt the connection I was looking for. It was as though it had been composed specifically for this film. I truly believe you can change the entire feeling and structure of a scene by making the right choice when it comes to music. I know we have made the right choice with THE DEVIL.”

THE DEVIL plans to begin touring to support the album in early 2013. Collectively they note, “It is great to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel, having worked on this band and album for years. We look forward to bringing our unique live show to audiences around the world.”

AS I LAY DYING – “Awakened” Full Album Stream On AOL Now On-Line

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 25, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Album release show at Santo’s Party House today in NYC

The Grammy-nominated Metal group AS I LAY DYING, who recently debuted their new single and video for “A Greater Foundation” to an overwhelming response by fans, have launched an exclusive full-album stream for AWAKENED on AOL Music. Fans can listen to the album now at www.music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/AWAKENED is available today in-stores and online!

AS I LAY DYING will be performing a special private CD release show in conjunction with Metal Blade Records 30th Anniversary that will take place on street date in New York at Santos Party House. Starting September 14, fans can pre-order AWAKENED at three New York-area independent record stores and receive a FREE laminate that gives you access into the private NYC release show! Stores participating includes: Looney Tunes (West Babylon, NY), Vintage Vinyl (Fords, NJ), and J&R (NYC).

AWAKENED–which marks the group’s sixth studio album– is garnering early critical acclaim. In his 4/5 star album review for Alternative Press magazine, writer Jason Schreurs hailed, “Screamer Tim Lambesis has never sounded better than on a metal anthem like ‘Overcome,’ his shattered scream completely ripping faces. …Awakened is the best As I Lay Dying album you can point to as metal both modernized and maximized.” (October 2012).

Elsewhere, in his 4/5 star album review for Artist Direct , Rick Florino singled out the preview track “Cauterized” as “An unshakable anthem, the song is the best kind of aural assault and battery from one of heavy metal’s most dynamic outfits. Morphing from a steamrolling six-string storm courtesy of Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso, the track shifts into a polyrhythmic crusher fueled by drummer Jordan Mancino and bassist Josh Gilbert’s immortal groove. Tim Lambesis seamlessly segues from a gruff growl into one of the group’s tightest and toughest clean choruses to date.” Florino adds, “‘Cauterize’ is a metallic remedy of the highest order. As I Lay Dying prove to be a genre leader by progressing while pummeling, and it’s evidence that Awakened is another level altogether. They’re set to wake up the genre with a landmark album.” (September 2012)

For AWAKENED, the San Diego-based band–NICK HIPA (guitar), TIM LAMBESIS (vocals), JORDAN MANCINO (drums), PHIL SGROSSO (guitar) and JOSH GILBERT (bass)–holed up in the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, CO with renowned rock producer Bill Stevenson (Descendents) and mixer Colin RichardsonAWAKENED marks the follow-up to the Decas EP (2011) which reached #2 on the iTunes Rock Chart. The group’s last LP, 2010’s immensely successful The Powerless Rise, debuted on the Billboard Top 200 at #10. The Powerless Rise also reached #2 on Billboard’s Independent Albums Chart and #3 on Billboard’s Hard Music Albums Chart.

I LEGION – Release Debut Album Featuring Members Of Soilwork, Threat Signal, Mutiny Within And More

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 24, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

What happens when you combine Björn Strid (SOILWORK), Jon Howard (THREAT SIGNAL), Chris Clancy (ex-MUTINY WITHIN), Peter Wichers (SOILWORK), Brandon Jacobs (ex-MUTINY WITHIN), Andy James (SACRED MOTHER TONGUE), Angel Vivaldi (VEXT), and musical genius Frederic Riverin?  Simple: you get one kick ass Metal record in the form of the band I LEGION.

I LEGION have officially released their debut album titled Beyond Darkness.

I LEGION is the musical work of Frederic Riverin, who spent the better part of 2011 crafting his latest project. With the help of producer and vocalist Chris Clancy, they both created the melodic metal sounds of what would become the debut album titled Beyond Darkness. Metal monsters Björn Strid, Jon Howard, and Chris Clancy handled vocal duties for the epic 12 track masterpiece. Modern guitar heroes Peter Wichers, Andy James, Angel Vivaldi, and Brandon Jacobs all contributed to the tasteful melodic lead guitar playing.

All these musicians helped Frederic to create his own album: alone, but with a legion behind him. The I LEGION.

Beyond Darkness is now for sale via iTunesCD Baby, and Bandcamp.

Critical Praise for A Eulogy For The Damned

“OG simply don’t put a foot wrong from start to finish. Near total perfection! 9/10” — Metal Hammer UK

“A respectfully powerful slice of heavy fuckin’ rock! 4/5” – Terrorizer

“Long-haired limeys, maximum riffage and turbo doom. Biker rock. From England. And it’s pretty awesome.” – Decibel

“Overall, their first record for Candlelight is pretty damn fantastic. Rockin’, riff-tastic and possibly the best record from start to finish that they’ve released yet.” – Popdose

“Album of the Month!” — Sweden Rock Magazine

“A truly amazing piece of work? This is absolutely the case! 4/5” – Molten Magazine

“With a sound that splits the difference between Sabbath and Motörhead, ORANGE GOBLIN serves up a potent dose of ’70s-style metal on A Eulogy For The Damned. Gloomy doom and punk power have seldom sounded so good together.” – Metal Underground

“Apart from the anxiously-awaited end of the world, I can’t imagine a scenario in which 2012 finishes and ORANGE GOBLIN’s A Eulogy for the Damned isn’t among the high points. Highly recommended for beginners and converts alike.” – The Obelisk

“I highly encourage you stop what you are doing and run right out and purchase it. 9.8/10” – Pure Grain Audio

“On a scale of 5 stars, I’ll give it 6 because it’s just that damned good!” – The Ripple Effect

ORANGE GOBLIN:

Ben Ward – Vocals

Joe Hoare – Guitar

Martyn Millard – Bass

Chris Turner – Drums

FEAR FACTORY – Let’s Ponder The Concept Of ‘The Industrialist’

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, industrial metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

FEAR FACTORY – By now, every loyal Fear Factory fan has (hopefully) purchased and listened to The Industrialist (at least) 500 times by now. Maybe more. Released back on June 2nd, via Candlelight Records, The Industrialist is a concept album that has what may be interpreted as a complex storyline, due in part to its philosophical thoughts that the lyrics provoke. I’ve (once again) been thoroughly entertained by the legendary Industrial Metal sound of Fear Factory on their eighth studio album. The concept has been equally fun for me as well, albeit a bit scary though!

Stone notes: When I refer to “machine” in the following lines, it is referenced towards the Industrialist and automaton(characters) that are the focal points of this impressive and chilling album: The Industrialist.

Man creates machine. Machine becomes a “free-thinker” by developing memories and emotions. Machine senses a “longing for existence” through said inherited memories and emotions. Machine rebels against its creator; which is man. The longtime controversial topic of man versus machine is once again realized and materialized through song, courtesy of the dynamic Industrial Metal super-duo of Burton C. Bell (vocalist, lyricist, producer) and Dino Cazares (multi-instrumentalist, producer).

I find The Industrialist to perhaps be a warning of what could one day become. Mankind may not have automatons walking around and tending to our every single need at this moment in 2012; yet computers do have an automaton quality about them. Granted, computers can only perform tasks that they are programmed to do and mankind still controls the technological wheel that drives every application we depend on.

(Left) Burton C. Bell, (Right) Dino Cazares

As I write this post on my MacBook Pro, I realize this computer will only do what I “tell it to do” by the click of a mouse or strike of a key. However, the science fiction side of my brain does make me ponder: could there one day be a computer application that will inherit true human emotions and memories? I’m not talking about archival memories, nor synthetic emotions here… I’m questioning the scary thought of a computer app becoming a free thinking entity!

The more I ponder this sci-fi aspect of computer technology, the more difficult it becomes (for me) to comprehend. A topic like this may very well be grouped in with those sensitive subjects such as politics, religion and (gasp) sex. Are we (mankind) supposed to question our rapid ascent of technology? When the topic of Armageddon is raised, the usual suspects of nuclear war, UFO’s, climate change, spontaneous natural disasters, the burning out of our sun, disease, famine and meteor showers are discussed. What about man-made machines like robotics or computers being the culprit(s) of a terrifying Armageddon?

As I read and listen to the lyrics of The Industrialist, it does take me back to the iconic box office franchise known as The Terminator and 2004’s I, Robot. This Fear Factory album has also reminded me of the song Metal Gods, from the 1980 Judas Priest album classic: British Steel. One stirring lyrical line from Metal Gods sums it up best, when delving into the sic-fi aspect of machine versus man: “From techno seeds we first planted, Evolved a mind of its own”.
