“It all comes down to what you truly love doing, and what I love doing is overdubbing and making new sounds out of things that are sometimes quite ordinary on their own, but when you put them together, they make something new–or something that sounds new. Just discovering things like that musically is a pleasure.”  – JEFF LYNNE, 2012

JEFF LYNNE, one of rock’s most iconic figures, is returning to make some new waves and shed a little electric light.

The creative force of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA and the singularly accomplished singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer will release two albums on October 5th in G.A.S, October 8th in the UK and Rest of Europe, October 9th in North America via Frontiers Records: the solo disc LONG WAVE, a heartfelt and vivid tribute to some of the very songs that originally inspired him, and MR. BLUE SKY – THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA. For the latter album, the British artist has artfully revisited and re-recorded–at his home studio in Los Angeles– the greatest hits of Electric Light Orchestra, actually improving on some of the most classic and beloved recordings ever.

The release of LONG WAVE and MR. BLUE SKY – THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA mark the 40th anniversary of ELO. LYNNE’s legacy will further be celebrated with releases in 2013 including ELO Live! plus expanded reissues of the ELO’s 2001 album Zoom and LYNNE’s first solo album in 1990, Armchair Theater. For up to date info on all things JEFF LYNNE and ELO, go here: www.elo.biz

LONG WAVE powerfully celebrates the music of a time when LYNNE’s lifelong passion for music began, evoking an era back when old standards were just giving way to rock & roll. He somehow makes pre-rock standards like “Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered,” “Smile” and “Love Is A Many Splendored Many Thing” — along with a few of his favorite gems from the Sixties such as the first single “Mercy, Mercy,” “Let It Rock” and “So Sad” — his own with these loving versions. LYNNE’s deeply felt and musically brilliant one-man-band takes add up to an inspired love letter to music itself — and an exquisite reflection of the way songs grace and change our lives.

“I call this new album Long Wave because all of the songs I sing on it are the ones heard on long wave radio when I was a kid growing up in Birmingham, England,” LYNNE explains. “These songs take me back to that feeling of freedom in those days and summon up the feeling of first hearing those powerful waves of music coming in on my old crystal set. My dad also had the radio on all the time, so some of these songs have been stuck in my head for 50 years. You can only imagine how great it felt to finally get them out of my head after all these years.”

MR. BLUE SKY – THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA is a powerful testament to LYNNE’s enduring artistry and his singular desire to get things right once and for all. Featuring such classics as “Evil Woman, “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Livin’ Thing” and “Mr, Blue Sky,” the result is, in effect, a kind of showdown between JEFF LYNNE today and his extremely illustrious past, and thanks to improved technology and recording artistry, LYNNE somehow comes out on top again. It’s a fresh chance to hear these extraordinary songs sounding sharper and clearer than the old versions.

“There was a big reason I wanted to re-record these ELO songs,” says LYNNE. “When I listen to the old versions they don’t sound the way I thought they did when I first wrote and recorded them. I wanted to use the experience I’ve gained producing records ever since and have a completely new try at them. I’m not saying the old versions aren’t good; I like them very much. We were doing our best, but experience and technology also play a big a big part, and these new ones sound much more solid and tight.”

The album includes a never-before-heard bonus track The Point Of No Return and a very special version of “10538 Overture” that’s a nod to ELO’s 40th anniversary.

The songs that JEFF LYNNE wrote and sang–and the recordings that he so expertly arranged and produced for ELO — have endured beautifully and are perhaps even more beloved today than they were back in the Seventies and Eighties. By any standard whatsoever, ELO is one of the most remarkable success stories in rock history. Consider just the facts: ELO has sold over 50 million records worldwide, and continues to be a remarkably popular catalog.

Between 1972 and 1986, LYNNE wrote and produced 26 Top Forty hits in the United Kingdom, and 20 Top Forty hits in the United States, including 20 Top Twenty smashes in the UK and 15 Top Twenty smashes in the U.S. Even more remarkably, the ELO catalog continues to have tremendous impact, as demonstrated powerfully when the compilation All Over The World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra was released in 2005 and became a Top Ten album in a number of international markets including England.

Outside of the success of ELO, LYNNE has led a remarkable career that has found him taking the lessons learned leading ELO and using them to help produce and collaborate with many of the greatest musical artists of all time, including a number of LYNNE’s all-time heroes including Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and remarkably, even the Beatles themselves, as well as contemporaries like Tom Petty and Joe Walsh, whose new album Analog Man LYNNE recently helped produce. Together with Harrison, Orbison, Petty and Bob Dylan, LYNNE was, of course, a member of the Grammy award-winning Traveling Wilburys – a super group like no other.

“I’ve been in love with music since I was probably just five years old,” says LYNNE. “I was made for music then — and I still am today.”

An Open Letter To Dee Snider – August 23rd, 2012

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, politics, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Hello Dee, it’s Stone. I’ve read today that you requested Vice Presidential nominee, Paul Ryan, to stop using the (your) Twisted Sister song “We’re Not Gonna Take It”. I also understand you (obviously) don’t support Paul Ryan or the Republican party.

However, please understand Dee, that our beloved Heavy Metal community is unlike the mainstream Rock and Pop communities. I speak for all Metalheads when I say we are: unified. We have and always will be unified regardless of race, sex, (I would hope religion) or political party affiliation. Anyone who disagrees is not a true “Defender Of The Faith”.

Certainly, there’s nothing wrong with an honest and open discussion of politics, after all, you fought for our civil rights when it comes to freedom of speech, when you stood up to the PMRC. Political commentary, sex and drugs in lyrics are here to stay due to your heroics on Capitol Hill. However, no political group or Hollywood clique has ever supported you as loyally as your fans have; please don’t turn your back on a large group of us now.

Political nonsense shall never steer me away from a band or musician. It’s always been about the music for me. I’ve never let politics cloud my judgement with an album review or interview. Please remember there are conservative fans that have looked upon Twisted Sister’s songs for inspiration, going on four decades strong. I can guarantee that there are many conservative politicians who grew up as Twisted Sister fans. “I Am, (I’m Me)”.

Dee, you have been a leader and legendary contributor to the history of Heavy Metal. Please don’t forget your fans that may support Paul Ryan and the Republican Party; for these same fans have loyally supported you since day one.

Please Dee, don’t get caught up with “those other guys” that have made political statements as a part of their overall claim to fame. Here at Metal Odyssey, bands are supported regardless of what political party they are loyal to. “You Can’t Stop Rock ‘N’ Roll”. Please Dee, don’t get onboard with the political Hollywood celebrity mainstream. You’re too good for that. Metal be thy name.

SOUNDGARDEN ‘Down On The Upside’ – This Album Stood By Me, During A Lonely Print Sales Career

Posted in classic rock, grunge, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SOUNDGARDEN – The fifth studio album and platinum selling Down On The Upside was released back in November of 1996, via A&M Records. Already super fond of Soundgarden, I bought this album (on cassette) back in 1996 and still own it to this day. Last weekend I finally upgraded my ownership of Down On The Upside to CD. I bought it at Super Walmart for $5 (U.S.). Whoa! What took me so long to upgrade this Soundgarden classic? I can’t even answer that question myself. File that question in Stone’s mystery folder and carry on my wayward son.

Back in 1996 I was a traveling printing salesman. Yes, you read that correctly. I need to correct that, I was a traveling printing salesman whore. Why use the word whore? Well, my customers treated me like shit regardless of my stellar customer service; while the various owners I worked for only gave a shit about my contacts and how much money they were worth. As a printing salesman, my self-image was at an all-time low; existing for the sole purpose to make someone else a ton of money, while making corporate print buyers look like winners of the week.

Why have I brought up this part of my past, in the middle of a very cool Soundgarden post? The reason is simple. Down On The Upside got me through (at least) three years of a profession that drained my spirit, while driving around all of New England. I’m serious about that. That Soundgarden cassette was my best friend on many, many lonely drives while being a white-collar punching bag.

I remember once, a jack-ass V.P. of my biggest client bellowing aloud, as I entered the room: “here come’s just another slimy salesman.” What an asshole that guy was. A genuine narcistic scum bag. Nice greeting to start my day, with a customer I essentially sacrificed my soul for. That dumb ass had  an “I’m an ABBA fan” written all over his face every time I saw him as well.

I remember leaving the building of that customer, on that God forsaken day, shaking my head in disgust. Once I started up my Ford Contour, I slapped in my Down On The Upside cassette and cranked up Pretty Noose… then Rhinosaur… then Zero Chance… and Soundgarden had me snickering all the way down the overstuffed highway to hell… or next disloyal customer, if you will.

Believe me, there were many other cassettes in my Contour while I served time as a printing salesman. Too many bands and titles to mention. It’s just that this Soundgarden album kept me afloat and had me realizing that it was Rock ‘N Roll that poured through my veins and soul… and not some stupid ass print-sales career. Whatever Soundgarden did with tweaking their musical nuances on Down On The Upside, they did it with a mystical wand.

From the very first time I heard Soundgarden, I recognized an attitude in their sound that beckoned me to become a fan. Is it Chris Cornell’s vocals? Can it be Kim Thayil’s guitar tones? The totality of Soundgarden’s sound is so unique, I never could even classify them as a “Grunge only” band. Hell no. There’s no question that Soundgarden did originate from the birth place of Grunge and pioneered an entirely new Rock movement. At the end of my Metal day, this band has and always will kick my ass with their hard and heavy Rock style and that’s all that matters to me.

It feels F’n grand to get this (silly) part of my life off of my chest today. No matter how I slice it, I can relate segments and experiences of my life to Rock ‘N Roll… and how it has and will forever save my Rockin’ soul. Thank you Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron. Metal be thy name.

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION’S ‘PEACEMAKER’ MAKES ITS MARK

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news, southern hard rock, southern rock with tags , , , , , , on August 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Red Dirt Metal rockers Texas Hippie Coalition continue their string of success with the release of their incredible third studio album ‘Peacemaker’ (Carved Records). This week, the band made their highest Billboard debut at #4 on Billboard’s Heatseeker chart as well as #31 on Record Label Indie Current Albums and #20 on Current Hard Music Albums.

On the radio front, the band debuted at #15 on CMJ’s Loud Rock Chart and #39 on the Mediabase Active Rock Chart. So far, the band has garnered over 1,000 Media-base monitored spins reaching over 2.4 million listeners earning major-market airplay including WIIL/Chicago, WRIF/Detroit, KBPI/Denver and KUPD/Phoenix.

Meanwhile, THC is riding a swarm of rave reviews as critics embrace their most ambitious album to date. Loudwire exclaims they are “the bastard that spawned from a threesome between Monster Magnet, Willie Nelson and Pantera… What ‘Peacemaker’ does is takes that brand and elevates it to a more significant level. The band sounds tighter than ever, the guitar riffs are incredibly crushing to say the least and the lyrics are exactly what you’ve come to love and adore about this band.” About.com says “Peacemaker is furious witness to THC cranking through 11 tracks that declare what bad-ass outlaws they are…”

“Whether you want to call it “red dirt metal” [or]… “Southern fried Texas rock,” T.H.C. combines a little of everything for a rock/metal melting pot that garners fans from across the musical spectrum. – Metal Underground

Texas Hippie Coalition are currently on the road including a handful of dates opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd. Stay tuned for more tour dates.

As reported on Lynyrd Skynyrd.com:

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Lynyrd Skynyrd are set to perform during events outside of the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida on Sunday, August 26 as part of the fundraising event Citizens Helping Heroes presents Southern Tribute IV Honoring America’s Heroes. The concert takes place at The American Action Network Pavilion at Liberty Plaza (corner of South Morgan & East Whiting Streets next to the Tampa Times Forum) and is open to paid sponsors and their guests. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s show launches the four-day event which also includes performances by Trace Adkins (8/28) and Kid Rock (8/29).

About Lynyrd Skynyrd:

With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American Rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

Led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), Lynyrd Skynyrd continues the tremendous legacy that began over 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida with their August 21, 2012 release, Last Of A Dyin’ Breed, a legacy that was halted for a decade after the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they continue to forge ahead.

Rounding out the line-up is bass player Johnny Colt, an original member of the Black Crowes who recently joined the band, Mark “Sparky” Matejka on guitar, Peter Keys on keyboards, and Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase as the Honkettes backing vocalists.

JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Six)

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, guitarists, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Joe Walsh saw his eleventh studio album, Analog Man, released back on June 5th, 2012. Since then, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this album’s songs from top to bottom; so much so, that I’ve written five Fun & Random Thoughts posts regarding this entertaining work. Now, you are reading the sixth such post!

Lyrically, Analog Man is filled with Joe’s real life experiences and Fishbone is one fine example. Fishbone is a funny song, only the story behind this song is not that humorous at all; at least to me it isn’t. Regardless, Joe Walsh has a unique way of turning a scary personal story into something “funny” to reflect upon. Joe Walsh explained the story behind this song in the liner notes of Analog Man. Here’s the story behind Fishbone, as I’ve kept it in fewest words as possible:

Joe’s wife had a fishbone (unfortunately) get stuck in her throat, while at a dinner party in Monte Carlo. She had to fly home to Los Angeles to have the fishbone removed from her throat. That poor woman. That’s scary stuff! I couldn’t imagine having any kind of bone getting stuck in my throat! Based on the lyrics of Fishbone, Joe’s wife obviously had a trying experience and eventual positive outcome. Thank God for that.

____________________________

Fishbone can get nasty, fishbone ain’t your friend – Joe Walsh

Trust me, the lyrics to Fishbone are funny and still I wince while listening to them. I just feel so bad for Joe’s wife having to go through such a terrible ordeal with a fishbone getting stuck in her throat. If this song has taught me any lessons, it’s you can’t take life for granted. Nor can you take life too seriously; especially when an outcome to a frightening experience or event turns out well. I’m sure if the outcome to this story was (gasp) something worse, then Joe Walsh would never have written such a lyrically funny song about it. I would hope so, anyway.

Musically, Fishbone is classic Joe Walsh. Semi-funky and loaded with guitar licks that ooze out from every crevice is Fishbone. Throw in some electronic artfulness on vocals for a second or two and Fishbone is a hidden gem of a song on Analog Man.

____________________________

Since we’re on the topic of Fishbone, here is a (topically related) album I’ve been reminded of:

Yes, that’s Fishbone’s seventh studio album titled: Still Stuck In Your Throat. This cool album was initially released in Europe, back in 2006. The Alt/Rock, Funk Metal and Ska Punk band known as… Fishbone. Whoever said the Rock Music world wasn’t intertwined in some mystical way should have their head examined for malfunction. Metal be thy name.

RUNNING THE RISK – A Rock Band From L.A. Teeming With A Modern, Edgy Sound & Contagious Vibes

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, modern rock, Music, rock bands, rock music, rock music news, rock music videos with tags , , , , , , on August 15, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

RUNNING THE RISK – Founded in 2011, L.A.’s edgy and vibrant Running The Risk is a Rock band that’s brimming with musical talent and praiseworthy songs to match. Signed to In Flight Music Group; a record label & publishing company based in Los Angeles, California. There’s no doubt in my mind that Running The Risk will very soon (if not immediately) be on many (if not all) a Rock journalist’s list of “bands to get in touch with and write about.”

Regardless of this years departure of bassist Curtis Corwin, Running The Risk is moving forward writing new music, conducting bass auditions; while promoting themselves on social networks. With vocalist Nicki Taylor, guitarist Nick Bell and drummer Aaron Cohan, the future of this band appears from all angles to be 100% solid.

What’s any better for a Rock band than having your own edgy sound, obvious credibility and super memorable songs? What could be any better than having a proficient lead vocalist that also gives such band a heaping dosage of stylish identity? This is Running The Risk and the Rock Music world will take notice. After I’ve listened to their The Monster and Because We Can EP’s, I’ve become a fan. Because I can.

Nicki Taylor

Nicki Taylor’s vocals conjures memories of my lifelong appreciation towards the voice of Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles coupled with Debbie Harry’s mystique; all the while Nicki stands-up as a true original. The all-inclusive sound of Running The Risk is Hard Modern, only they have apparently captured a retrospective slice of Rock history as well; one that reminds me of those days when mainstream Rock didn’t all sound the same.

The newly released, Because We Can (2 song EP) bestows the cover versions of: Black Sabbath’s War Pigs and Talk Talk’s Talk Talk. When a band messes with an ultra classic from the sacred past of Heavy Metal history, I can get a bit uneasy; this is not the case with Running The Risk covering War Pigs. Instead, this is Running The Risk celebrating (admirably) a Heavy Metal treasure of a song and band.

I very much dig the way Running The Risk covered War Pigs. This band breathed a young, fresh and still heavy life into a timeless Sabbath song. I also appreciate hearing Nicki’s vocals pouring over the lyrics to War Pigs. No… this is not Ozzy. This is Nicki. This is Running The Risk and they’re Metal on War Pigs. Take a listen for yourself:

The Monster EP is a collection of 4 demo songs. If these 4 songs are demos then I’m the next editor for Quilting and Knitting magazine. Monster, Mayday, Good Kind Of Evil and Backfire are a delicious listen into the future Rockin’ success of Running The Risk. There really is no risk at listening to The Monster EP at all! All you have to do is download this EP for FREE right here: http://www.RunningTheRisk.com

You can purchase “Because We Can” which includes the cover songs War Pigs and Talk Talk on iTunes: http://tiny.cc/iTunesRTR

Closing out my Rockin’ recommendation of Running The Risk, I’d like to share some live footage of them! Check out below, Running The Risk “Live At Starline” in Fresno, California! Metal be thy name.

NEUROSIS – Title Of Eleventh Full-Length From Musical Pioneers Revealed

Posted in experimental music, experimental rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on August 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

It is said that great art has the power to take us outside of ourselves and bring us closer to ourselves simultaneously. Few bands have accomplished this rare feat on a more profound and consistent basis than NEUROSIS. For nearly three decades, their music has touched the hearts and minds of young men and women seeking contact with something beyond the physical world, something intangible, something that expresses the inner tumult of the human condition in a way that transcends time and space. Something that not only provokes questions but maybe even hints at answers.

Since 1985 this matchless force has surpassed the boundaries of any genre, never-ceasing to mutate and progress their songwriting and sonic delivery, and never-failing to mesmerize audiences both in the studio and onstage. And as the anticipation from their diehard fanbase reaches a boiling point, this week NEUROSIS unveil the title of their eleventh full-length studio creation, which will manifest itself as Honor Found In Decay.

The follow-up to their acclaimed 2007-released Given To The Rising album, the music on Honor Found In Decay is both torturous and transcendent. It is the ongoing exposition of a vast internal dialogue that seems to carry the weight of eons. With the right kind of ears and eyes, it can seem like the trials and tribulations of mankind are being channeled through five individuals: Steve Von Till, Scott Kelly, Noah Landis, Jason Roeder and Dave Edwardson. And yet? They will be the first ones to tell you that they are just regular people trying to make sense of the world around them.

Aided by Josh Graham, their resident visual guru, they transmit their interpretations through multiple sensory planes. The degree to which Neurosis allows them to step out of their everyday lives is the distance between one and zero, the distance between thinking and doing, the distance between this minute and the one that may or may not follow. Which is to say: NEUROSIS takes them outside of themselves and brings them closer to themselves. Simultaneously.

This next chapter in the evolution of NEUROSIS will see worldwide release through the band’s own Neurot Recordings this Autumn, in Germany October 26th, in the UK October 29th, and in North America on October 30th.

Further details on Honor Found In Decay will be made available over the coming weeks.

Wanna See My CHRISTOPHER CROSS Debut S/T Album I Recently Bought? It’s Really Cool…

Posted in adult contemporary rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news, soft rock with tags , , , , , , , on August 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CHRISTOPHER CROSS

That’s it above! I bought this Christopher Cross album for a whopping 50 cents (U.S.) at a thrift store, at the beginning of this Summer. There is only minimal (normal) wear to the right-hand corners of the album jacket. The vinyl itself looks and sounds like it was never played!

The debut and self-titled album from the legendary Christopher Cross was released on Warner Bros., back in December of 1979. This album has become a beacon, within the pages of Rock Music history. Christopher Cross boasted three Billboard Top 40 songs: Ride Like The Wind, Never Be The Same and Sailing. (Sailing reached #1 status as a single).

Christopher Cross also had won a Grammy Award for Album Of The Year, back in 1981. Here is a Rock history shocker for you: Christopher Cross beat out Pink Floyd’s The Wall for Album Of The Year. Whoa. A Soft Rock performer was chosen over an already proven and justifiably iconic Rock band such as Pink Floyd for that prestigious Grammy, back in ’81. Regardless, I’ve never been a fan of how the Grammy Awards are structured anyways.

If I had to choose one album over the other, I’m choosing The Wall; only this post is about my celebrating Christopher Cross. I like this Christopher Cross album a great deal. This album not only exhibits extremely memorable songs since I first heard them so many years ago; these songs are also timeless for me.

Here is what the back cover of the album jacket looks like:

Take a listen below to Ride Like The Wind, as performed by Christopher Cross; while you listen, keep an ear out for the backing vocals of the legendary Michael McDonald.

Take a listen below to the Hard & Heavy cover version of Ride Like The Wind, performed by the  legendary Jorn. This song is from Jorn’s 2012 studio album, Bring Heavy Rock To The Land, released on Frontiers Records.

________________________________________

If you have listened to both of these versions of Ride Like The Wind, which one do you prefer? I’ll always embrace the original from Christopher Cross, yet, Jorn’s version does psyche the living hell out of me! Metal be thy name, it does.

Here is what the inner sleeve for this Christopher Cross debut S/T album looks like (below). Notice the liner notes and lyrics are printed on it… that’s old school.

Thanks for checking out my Christopher Cross album that I scooped-up on a recent Rock ‘N Metal hunting trip. As always, I’ll continue to post more Rockin’ treasures that I stumble upon!

Rock Steady out there this coming week and remember: “leave a penny, take a penny” at your neighborhood convenience stores.

LONG LIVE CHRISTOPHER CROSS.

Frank Zappa’s Guitarist and Vocalist Ike Willis to Release Biography

Posted in Guitar, Hard Rock, Music, rock and roll, rock guitarists, rock music, rock music books, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Ike Willis works with friends and fans to bring his story to life

Los Angeles, CA – The Ike Willis Book, an upcoming literary release from The Project Scrutinizer, will be published later this year. The Ike Willis Book will chronicle the life and times of Ike Willis, who played guitar and sang with Frank Zappa for fifteen years.

Ike Willis is featured on a number of classic albums including Joe’s Garage, Tinseltown Rebellion, You Are What You Is, Them or Us and Shut Up & Play Yer Guitar. Mr. Willis has lived a long, star-studded, Rock and Roll version of “the American dream” before, during and after his time with Frank Zappa. Since Zappa’s death in 1993, Willis has continued paying tribute to the incredibly detailed and academic arrangements of Zappa’s original music while performing in Europe and South America with a variety of tribute bands including Project/Object at the Zappanale festival in Germany for the last three years.

The book is derived from highlights of weeks of interviews with Ike, his family and friends, plus key contributions from prominent Frank Zappa alumni such as Bobby Martin, Don Preston, Denny Walley, Ray White, Ed Mann and many others. This is the story of Ike Willis, the son, the father, the musician, the singer, the intellectual and kid from St. Louis, MO who made it big. Many of these exclusive, personal stories about Mr. Willis’ life and his career with Frank Zappa have never been told before. Ike’s story includes people from all walks of life and is a truly fantastic piece of Rock and Roll history.

Mr. Willis commented on the book; “Now that I am so far into the process of telling my story, all I can say is that I never expected to do something quite like this. The experience has been so powerful and I really feel fortunate to get this unique opportunity. This book will have something interesting for every type of fan – even the ones who have known me forever. I have a large number of Frank Zappa alumni who have contributed to the interviews and we spend plenty of time talking about how many of the most famous songs originated, as well as what life inside the Zappa Universe was really like. We were all so lucky to have had the opportunity to perform the music he wrote and get to spend countless hours with him in the studio, on the road and basically in his world. This book is as important to any piece of music I played with Frank because it really explains how we did it!”

The book is slated to be available in late December to coincide with the holidays and Frank Zappa’s birthday. Mr. Willis is booked for an extensive touring schedule with a number of his tribute projects beginning later this year and has a new solo album heading to the studio with several special guest appearances planned.

The Project Scrutinizer, the international group of Ike Willis’ friends and fans heading the project, has branches in Los Angeles, New York, New Jersey, Portland (Oregon) and Europe. A Kickstarter funding effort is currently underway and contributing fans will be recognized within the book.

HATEBREED – LONG LIVE HATEBREED! And… BOYCOTT CNN

Posted in hardcore, hardcore metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

HATEBREED – As the world turns, over at CNN, they see the world as they want to. They report the news as they like, regardless of knowing the facts. Truth? Forget about it over at CNN. CNN likes to tell us all how to live, what to eat, how much to eat, where to go and of course… here’s the BIG one… who to vote for. The news giant known as CNN has finally tripped up BIG TIME my Metal brethren. CNN has messed with Hardcore/Metal legends HATEBREED in a very disturbing way. CNN has insulted HATEBREED and it’s sickening.

What CNN has done: their enormous news platform was used to accuse HATEBREED of being a “white power” band in a CNN Opinion piece, which was written by a highly misinformed Lonnie Nasatir. This unethical, immoral and flat-out WRONG “listing” of HATEBREED in a list of white power bands is more than mind-boggling… it’s defamation of character and a law has been broken. No, this isn’t about an innocent situation of a band being mislabeled. That’s a certified falsity right there. Yes, CNN, your news platform was used to slander HATEBREED and that can’t be denied.

Here’s a shocker within this shocking story: Lonnie Nasatir is the Anti-Defamation League’s Chicago/Upper Midwest Director.

Placing HATEBREED on a “list” of white power bands is an outrage! A false label! HATEBREED has been a unifying band for all of us fellow Hardcore, Metalcore and Metal fans, regardless of race, religion or sex. The lyrics of HATEBREED have never divided nor spread hate within our Hardcore and Metal families; if anything, HATEBREED has reached out to all fans through their music, concerts and social networks on a continuous level that is stunningly admirable.

___________________________________

I urge every visitor to Metal Odyssey to boycott CNN and never watch, read or follow their news or programming ever again. CNN and Lonnie Nasatir owe HATEBREED more than a widespread public apology and should be ashamed for their grade school level of journalism.

I write about and communicate with musicians and bands, just about every day of my life. I cannot even comprehend the stupidity level that has taken place here within the CNN world of (laugh) joke journalism. CNN is now: NCNN. What is NCNN you ask? It’s the: NON CREDIBLE NEWS NETWORK.

I predicted within my circles, that a major news network would eventually try to take down Metal Music due to the horrific shooting massacre at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin this past weekend. Connecting this massacre to Heavy Metal white supremacist bands spiraled out-of-control here… and HATEBREED deserves much better than this.

God bless the souls of the shooting victims at the Sikh Temple in Wisconsin. God bless the families and friends of these innocent victims.

METAL. BE. THY. NAME.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Posted in food, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 7, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Holy Metal crap, it’s already August 7th! When does time ever seem to slow down? Have you been scrambling lately trying to keep up on new album releases? I have. I’m always scrambling… like an egg in a frying pan! At the end of my Metal day, it’s all about being alive and being grateful for family, friends, Metal Buddies and…

If you want to get your eardrums pounded by some (Crossover) Thrash Metal that is super saturated with FUN and Old School vibes, while not missing a beat on total ass-kicking impact, then the recently released Municipal Waste album is for you. (See top of post). The Fatal Feast (Waste In Space) was released back on April 10th, via Nuclear Blast America. Metal as my witness, I cannot stop listening to this new Municipal Waste album. It just sounds and feels so F’n good. Metal be thy name.

Okay, okay. We’ll talk food. Geez. After all, food is… METAL.

On that trip I took to Ohio with my wife back in July, we did stop to eat at another restaurant besides Champps. Skyline Chili was recommended to us by the airport shuttle bus driver. Located in Dayton, Ohio, Skyline Chili served up both fantastic service and most importantly… terrific food. The fantastic service came courtesy of a super-duper friendly waitress named: Charlee.

I realize that there are many female spelling variants for this name, so I chose one at random. If Charlee ever comes across this post, I hope she can direct me to the proper spelling of her name! Charlee is a college student and aspiring entertainment journalist. Rock on.

Below is a fine example of what my wife and I ordered for lunch at Skyline Chili on our visit. After my wife and I ate this bounty of food, we didn’t eat dinner that night! Nor did we eat breakfast the next day! Whoa!

Last and definitely not least, I have decided to write for Brian Basher’s Hard Rock Nights. There are editorial responsibilities included too. Metal Buddy Brian Basher asked and Stone said… “Let’s Rock.”

Don’t panic! Metal Odyssey isn’t going away! I will still pump-out the Metal and Extreme Metal news, Metal & Rock ‘N Roll thoughts, album reviews and off-beat stuff (such as restaurants I’ve eaten at), right here!. Metal Odyssey is my Metal sanctuary; so rest assured you’ll always find something new about Metal (and Rock ‘N Roll) here, my Metal brethren!
