CORONATUS ‘Terra Incognita’ – 5 Reasons Why You Should Get Into This Gothic Metal Album

CORONATUS – One of the best albums I’ve listened to from 2011 is Terra Incognita from Germany’s Gothic Metal Band: Coronatus. This is a band and album that can’t be overlooked by any diverse Metal fan. I would love to see Coronatus become a huge favorite among the Metal masses in North America, their entire sound and attention to detail with their music is impressive and lures me in song after song. Below are five reasons why you should consider adding Terra Incognita to your list of must have albums.

Reason #1: Coronatus is a band that obviously loves music, period. This is a Metal band, only Coronatus knows how to create music. They cross over many Metal genres with Terra Incognita. Yes, this band and album will appeal highly to Gothic Metal fans, yet Melodic, Symphonic and Traditional Metal fans can easily hear many elements on Terra Incognita that they can surely embrace.

Reason #2: On Terra Incognita, everything comes together so fine. The keyboard arrangements and orchestration belongs with and compliments so well the melodic guitar parts and heavy riffs. The union of melodic and heavy just sounds and feels incredibly genuine throughout this entire album.

Reason #3: Mareike Makosch (Alto Voice) and Lady Ada Flechtner (Rock Soprano) could easily steal the show on Terra Incognita, if not for the masterful totality of musicianship that this band excels with. However, I find my ears absorbing the vocals of these two beautiful voices and being left nearly spellbound. This is an album that I listen to time and again and still hear something new consistently.

Reason #4: The European sound and vibe from Coronatus is infectious. Regardless if the song is sung in German (Fernes Land) or English (Dead Man’s Tale), the end result is a definitive listen into just how passionate these two female vocalists are about the song. This passion for song that I hear is a universal language all its own.

Reason #5: There is never a moment where I want to skip over a song on Terra Incognita. The cumulative listen brings about a mood that is epic and a vibe that is celebratory. The cool aspect of listening to a band such as Coronatus and their newest gem Terra Incognita, is that I know I will hear a presentation that is all importantly memorable. Standing out and being original are qualities that this band easily bestows and conveys musically on Terra Incognita.

Yes, I highly recommend Terra Incognita. Coronatus receives a well deserved Metal bravo from me and I stand by this Metal sentiment.

ALMAH – ‘Motion’: Brazilian Metal At Its Very, Very Finest and An Album To Absorb

ALMAH – Releasing in North America on January 17th, via AFM Records, is the third studio album from Brazil’s fantastically talented Metal band: ALMAH. To say this is one Metal album to own in 2012 feels like a call of Metal duty on my part. Angra vocalist Edu Falaschi is paired with his Angra bandmate Felipe Andreoli on bass, with Marcelo Barbosa and Paulo Schroeber on guitars and Marcelo Moreira on drums. Whoa, can both Marcelo and Paulo play them guitars! Metal be thy name. This album boasts some unbelievable guitar driven moments, all which leaves my eyes bugging out of my head. Seriously.

Edu Falaschi has somewhat silently become a premier vocalist in the world of Metal. You may not see Edu’s name on many top-ten lists for vocalists, only make no mistake, he takes a backseat to not many of his peers, in my Metal opinion. As a band, ALMAH can play their Metal fast, heavy and melodic. The glowing appeal about ALMAH is their ability to mix-it-up on Motion. ALMAH does not fall into any tidy comfort zone when it comes to Metal.

Motion opens up with Hypnotized and ALMAH delivers some crunchy and steel reinforced Metal on this song. Add into the mix a muscular rhythm section, backing vocals that elevates the high vibe, with mouth-watering guitars spewing out unyielding riffs, leads and a killer solo and you have… Metal bliss. Late Night  In ’85 is mid-paced and still has the ability to psyche-out my senses. If I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again, Edu can sing and he soars on Late Night In ’85. This song also benefits from an amazing guitar solo at the 3/4 mark, bringing Late Night In ’85 to a glorious finish, simultaneously with Edu’s vocals.

Daydream Lucidity is a marvelous listening journey. This song showcases the melodic vocals of Edu and the guitars of Marcelo and Paulo. With illuminating guitar parts that are shredding and other parts melodic, Daydream Lucidity is a shining moment on Motion. When and Why is atmospheric from its opening note, with a tremendous help from tones created by some brilliant acoustic guitar. ALMAH created a ballad here with When and Why and it resonates emotion courtesy of Edu’s vocals. It makes for a cool and mellow way to close out Motion.

Lyrically smart and coming across so spontaneous are the songs on Motion. This is an ultra-talented band of musicians and ALMAH can take a bow for an album I’ve listened to many times over already. ALMAH has proven there is creativity in Metal without being straight-lined progressive and their new album Motion is not to be ignored… it’s to be absorbed.

SKELETONWITCH ‘Forever Abomination’ – 5 Reasons Why You MUST Own This Extreme Metal Album

SKELETONWITCH – Forever Abomination is the fourth studio album from Ohio’s SKELETONWITCH and was released back on October 11th, 2011, on Prosthetic Records. I bought this release on CD and it has served me right. Forever Abomination has kicked my Metal ass, many times over. I’m not bullshitting either. Below are 5 reasons why you MUST buy Forever Abomination.

Reason #1: SKELETONWITCH seamlessly unites Thrash and Death Metal grooves resulting in a Metal sound that is Skeletelextreme.

Reason #2: Chance Garnette. His vocals are drenched with Black Metal tones and he sings on this album at his most venomous best yet. Chance has to have steel reinforced vocal cords. How else could he sing at such an optimum level of aggression?

Reason #3: If you’re looking to have your ears and senses galvanized, then rest assured, Forever Abomination will have you staring into space as you wonder what just happened to you. Yes, you will yearn for more.

Reason #4: Musicianship. Extreme Metal musicianship at that. This band plays so heavy and fast that it’s staggering. All the while, not once do the songs embody any muddled parts. The intricacies are all there and SKELETONWITCH keeps evolving as a band.

Reason #5: The dark lyrics throughout Forever Abomination are a powerhouse unto this album. Combine these lyrics, with the scathingly fierce atmosphere from the Extreme wall of sound that you’ll experience and it’s Metal mind-boggling.

EXHUMED – Announce: Grind Over Europe Tour 2012

BLACK BREATH: Seattle Savages Go On The Attack With Second LP In Early 2012

Seattle’s barbaric wrecking crew BLACK BREATH have completed their second LP and are preparing to fire it point-blank into the public’s face this March. The forthcoming new platter, dubbed Sentenced to Life, is the highly anticipated follow-up to the band’s raging 2010 debut album, Heavy Breathing, which blew away fans of both hardcore-fueled Rock and Roll and crushing Swedish Death Metal internationally.

Now in 2012, BLACK BREATH‘s neck-snapping Sentenced To Life projects an even more vile, Metallic sonic attack than its predecessor, bearing is a bit less rock and roll swagger and a showcasing more full-on crushing rage. The album is a product of furious creativity jammed into a short span of time, written in the seemingly endless Winter after returning from their November 2010 European tour.

Bearing 10 thunderous tracks in under 33 minutes, Sentenced To Life features such smashing BLACK BREATH hits as “Feast of the Damned,” “Doomed,” “Forced Into Possession,” “Home of the Grave” and of course the title anthem “Sentenced to Life.” The band once again recorded at God City Studios with Kurt Ballou, and had the finished product mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side. Easily the band’s most thunderous recording to date, BLACK BREATH sentence every listener to a life of headbanging after spinning this motherfucker!

I really dig what I hear from the Thrash Metal noize of REZISTOR. These guys haven’t taken a page from Old School Thrash and Metal… they’ve studied the F’n text-book on it. While blending their own stylings to a raw and aggressive Thrash Metal approach that’s relevant, REZISTOR should not go unheard or unspoken! REZISTOR shouldn’t remain as an unsigned band for long. “Beware the Silent” is Rezistor’s response to the society we live in: one governed by corrupted laws that chain the individual and alienate him from the fundamental human values. Its lifeforce is feeding on the dark energy boiling deep down inside each individual forced to obey unjust rules and punished for not blindly conforming to a shallow and artificial grey society.

SABATON – New Album Details Revealed, Release Party Scheduled For Los Angeles!

IRON SAVIOR ‘The Landing’ – German Power Metal Force Returns, In A Mammoth Way!

In a vast world of Power Metal bands, Iron Savior has reinstated they are to be reckoned with whether you like it or not and The Landing is their Heavy Metal arsenal of 2012… one that cannot be contained nor denied.

Iron Savior fans may have waited four years for this new powerful offering of Heavy Metal thunder, only it was well worth the wait. This is a band that sounds pumped-up and ready for Power Metal battle, from start to finish on The Landing. This album is a total package of Power Metal on high, which features more impressive guitar leads, riffs and solos than I can count. Piet Sielck without any doubt in my Metal mind, belongs with the very best of Power/Heavy Metal vocalists, at commanding a song and bringing it to greater heights.

Ring that Metal bell and declare all posers to hell, cause Iron Savior has cast one unbelievable Metal spell with Hall Of The Heroes. Oh, the vocals of Piet Sielck, oh, that guitar solo… oh, that riveting rhythm section, oh, that chorus… simply an amazing song. Simply an amazing album.

If you consider yourself a Metal martyr and Defender Of The Faith… buy The Landing and play IRON SAVIOR very, very, LOUD… while your uncontrollable Heavy Metal pride explodes from your Metal soul, spilling upon all those around you. Metal be thy name… forever.

HATE SQUAD: Sixth Album Set For North American Release On Massacre Records

Having won over audiences across Europe via major Metal/Hardcore tours and massive festival appearances since their 1993 inception, German Metalcore heavyweights HATE SQUAD will drop their newest full-length, Katharsis, onto North American audiences via Massacre Records this January 17th.

The Hannover-based quartet will kick off the new year with their sixth LP to date, surging with nearly an hour of the band’s pummeling blend of death metal and hardcore. Recorded and mixed by Ralf Müller at Rape of Harmonies Studios, produced by Müller and HATE SQUAD, and mastered by Olman Viper at Hertzwerk (Hamburg), the album clearly makes the listener aware that they are a force to be reckoned with in the new year, and once again prove why HATE SQUAD remain one of Germany’s leading Metalcore exports.

THE PROPHECY²³ – After the overwhelming reviews of their first record “…To The Pit” and many crazy live-shows (i.a. WACKEN OPEN AIR 2011) THE PROPHECY²³ announce their second record GREEN MACHINE LASER BEAM.

It will be produced by Kristian “Kohle” Kohlmannslehner in the Kohlekeller Studios in January and February 2012. He already worked on chart-breaker like Crematory and Powerwolf. The second record of THE PROPHECY²³ will be released by MASSACRE RECORDS in spring/summer 2012. The cover artwork was again drawn by Marvin Clifford (MAD Magazine, etc.).

ANTHRAX – As I was looking & reading through some of my back issues of Metal Hammer over the weekend, I came across a “list” in the August 2011 issue. This list I’ve found especially valuable for my Metal knowledge. Maybe this list will be just as valuable for yours? The list is a timeline of all the lead vocalists for the ultra legendary Thrash Metal pioneers: ANTHRAX.

DERAILED – Canadian Metal Warriors Announce New Bass Player & Details On Forthcoming 2012 Album ‘Underground’

DERAILED announces new bass player and details to their forthcoming sophomore studio album Underground!

Calgary Alberta Canada’s very own Metal Warriors, DERAILED, have issued the following exciting updates from their Metal camp:

Derailed are proud to introduce Greg Kristianson as the new bass player for the group. Greg’s musical background includes current Metallica & Iron Maiden tribute bands, ‘Disposable Heroes’ & ‘Edward the Great’ in the local Alberta Metal scene. Greg’s enthusiasm & dedication to perfection are a welcome addition to the band!

On the recording front, drums & bass tracks are now finished for the upcoming conceptual CD, Underground, to be released sometime in April/May of 2012. Guitars & vocals are next! The boys are extremely excited on the progress thus far, much more heavier & aggressive!

THE NEOLOGIST – Announce Decrepit Birth’s Drummer SAMUS As Guest On New Soilwork Covers Album

THE NEOLOGIST have announced their “mystery drummer” on the upcoming first track of the bands new SOILWORK cover album as none other than the multi-faceted SAMUS (Decrepit Birth, ex-Mutiny Within, ex-Abigail Williams, ex-Suspyre).  THE NEOLOGIST have collaborated with SAMUS for their first release, “Shadowchild”.

Coming off the heels of their debut album, The 26 Letters of Your Universe,  THE NEOLOGIST also released a full length IN FLAMES cover album titled IN FLAMES We Trust: Volume I.  They are at it again as they are currently recording a brand new full SOILWORK cover album.  The band has also asked fans to help them pick which songs to cover by leaving their requests on the band’s website www.theneologist.net

To be street about it, As I Lay Dying kicks Metal ass with this classic intro and cover song.

Choosing the best album cover art is, like music itself: subjective. There are many, many album covers from 2011 that I adore. I chose the PENTAGRAM and HAVOK album covers due to my staring at them for semi-long periods of time. Does that sound funny? I don’t think it’s funny. Okay, maybe a tad funny.

The Grim Reaper has always been the dark and sinister mascot of Metal. Mo Moussa captured that old school Metal look with this Last Rites art and I extend my Metal appreciation for that.

HAVOK – TIME IS UP

The skull on this macabre skeleton is chilling! The attention to detail is incredible on this HAVOK cover, with the lightning outside the window and other skeletons in the backdrop adding to the overall horror appeal. From what lead vocalist & guitarist David Sanchez told me, (during a Hard Rock Hideout interview), Halsey Swain actually put brush to canvas for this ultra-fabulous Time Is Up album cover. Old School strikes once again! Hey… if it wasn’t for Old School, there would be no new school.

Whoa what a box set this is! A 16 page, full color, hardcover concert photo book. Two DVD’s, (1 concert & 1 documentary) with 16 pages of more incredible concert photos & cool liner notes. 1 live CD. It’s all DORO, The Queen of Heavy Metal, her amazing voice and her band!

This amazing DORO package features the celebration of her 25th Anniversary concert on December 13, 2008, at the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf, Germany, (Doro’s hometown). Pure quality, from beginning to end, with both the DVD’s and live CD. The concert photo book is so hard to put down. A timeless and priceless DORO box set for me.

BEST PERSONAL METAL MOMENT

When I received the assignment from Rob Rockitt, over at HARD ROCK HIDEOUT, to cover Queensrÿche live at The Crocodile Rock Cafe in Allentown, Pennsylvania… I was psyched out of my Metal mind! Metal Odyssey staff photographer Tom Coderre and I had a blast on this evening of Queensrÿche Metal.

Yes, this was my Best Metal Moment Of 2011, however, this was the Best Metal Moment Of My Life as well. To personally meet Geoff Tate and each member of Queensrÿche, back on August 2nd, 2011, made for Rock ‘N Roll dreams to come true. I personally thank each member of Queensrÿche for their being incredibly professional and polite. This band kicked ass onstage that night too! Metal be thy name they did.

I also thank Tom Coderre for being my Metal Buddy on that momentous evening and documenting so professionally this Queensrÿche concert and personal Metal moment. Thank you Rob Rockitt and Hard Rock Hideout for the golden opportunity to cover & meet the legendary Queensrÿche.

EPICA – Release The Cover Artwork & Tracklist Of Their New Album: ‘REQUIEM FOR THE INDIFFERENT’

Epica’s upcoming 5th full-length album which will be released on the 9th of March 2012 (EU) by Nuclear Blast:

Epica will present this album to the public on the 16th of March 2012, in 013, Tilburg (NL) tickets are still available but are going out fast!

ORANGE GOBLIN – ‘A Eulogy For The Damned’: This Album Is Mandatory Metal, My Metal Brethren

ORANGE GOBLIN – They’re back. Orange Goblin. On February 14, 2012, the seventh studio album from one of Britain’s finest Metal bands of the 20th and 21st Centuries will be released on Candlelight Records. Their new album A Eulogy For The Damned is such an amazing listen from front to back, that I’ve had to throw cold water on my face to make certain I’m not imagining it all. Seriously. From the album’s rip-it-up opener of Red Tide Rising, to the closer A Eulogy To The Damned, there is absolutely not one boring micro-second to hear on this album.

Is this new Orange Goblin album perfect? Damn it’s near close to Metal perfection as you can get. I cannot get enough of what I’m hearing on A Eulogy For The Damned. Orange Goblin reveals their inner linings of Stoner meets Classic Hard Rock vibes, courtesy of countless riffs and guitar parts, with bass and drums resonating all great things about exhilarating rhythm and grooves… and this is still Metal. Orange Goblin takes their Metal sound to a heightened level of awe, on such tracks as Stand For Something and Save Me From Myself, with a combination of retrospective Rockin’ thunder and unbridled Hard and Heavy relevance.

A Eulogy For The Damned epitomizes just how a Metal album can come across and sound, when a band doesn’t over-indulge in their own creativity or skills. This is a Metal album, only it’s Metal that doesn’t trip over its own feet. Even repetition on the closing track A Eulogy To The Damned is music genius within this song’s structure. I honestly found myself disappointed that this album has ten songs. Then again, these ten songs make the listening experience so befittingly special. Maybe other bands can learn a lesson here from Orange Goblin and keep their filler tracks where they belong… in a box labeled “work in progress”.

The vocals of Ben Ward and total musicianship of this band roars with authority, as an undeniable sound and feel of keeping it real is a non-stop listening experience on this album. If it’s your goal to buy amazing Metal in 2012, you can kick-start this goal into reality by buying A Eulogy For The Damned. Of course Orange Goblin fans and Metal fans will dive right into this new album, yet Stoner, Hard Rock and even Classic Rock fans are certain to find numerous slices of A Eulogy For The Damned quite damn appealing.
