NIDINGR – ‘Greatest Of Deceivers’ Details Revealed; Releasing In North America On November 20th

Posted in Black Metal, black metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on September 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Recent Indie Recordings signees, NIDINGR, will unleash their new full-length, Greatest Of Deceivers, in North America on November 20th. Starring present and past members of bands such as Mayhem, Gorgoroth, DHG (Dødheimsgard), 1349 and God Seed, among others, the Norwegian Black Metal magicians are known for their efficiently complex songwriting, ravagingly dissonant, yet infinitely catchy riffs and breakneck tempos. Their two previous offerings — 2005’s Sorrow Infinite And Darkness and 2010’sWolf Father — prove what this maniacal assault is capable of.

NIDINGR recorded G.O.D. in Crystal Canyon Studios in Oslo, home to a host of prominent Norwegian acts including cult experimentalists Ulver, to accomplish a unique ‘70s, vintage style production. The sound they’ve created is a wholly organic, warm, unedited and un-triggered production that further emphasizes the great musicianship caught on tape. Greatest Of Deceivers was produced by guitarist Teloch, mixed by Anders Møller (Kitchie Kitchie Ki Me O, Euroboys, 120 Days, Turbonegro, etc.) and  mastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone Studios. The cover was crafted by the renowned Metastazis (Morbid Angel, Nachtmystium, Paradise Lost, Watain, Blut Aus Nord, etc.).

Greatest Of Deceivers continues the theme from Sorrow Infinite And Darkness, based on Enochian texts. As on the previous album, ten Enochian Æthyrs are evoked through the course of the album.

Greatest Of Deceivers Track Listing:

01. Greatest Of Deceivers
02. All Crowns Fall
03. O Thou Empty God
04. The Balances
05. Vim Patior
06. Rags Upon A Beggar
07. The Worm Is Crowned
08. Pure Pale Gold
09. Mother Of Abominations
10. Dweller In The Abyss

VALDUR – Alpine Black/Death Occultists Issue Recording Update; New Song Posted

Posted in Black Metal, black metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Alpine Black/Death occultists VALDUR recently completed composing their upcoming, as-yet, untitled new full-length. Official recording sessions will commence on November 12th at Earhammer Studios. Additionally, VALDUR recently unleashed an ultra limited two-song EP entitled The Hammer Pit containing a rough version of two new songs. Taste the blood of track one, “Conjuring The Fire Plagues,” at the band’s Official BandCamp Page. When asked to talk about the upcoming new material, the band said in a collective statement: “We wish not to elaborate too much and allow the music that we will be putting out in the near future to do the talking.”

In the meantime, check out VALDUR live in the studio at KDVS at THIS LOCATION.

Hailing from Mammoth Lakes, California, VALDUR released Raven God Amongst Us in 2010 via Blood Mountain Records. The record proved to be an infernal masterpiece among the underground masses. Noted The Metal Crypt in a review of the record: “USBM is so often by the numbers that I am wary of it right out of the gate, but this is a band that remembers what is good about black metal, and does it very well indeed. Not an album to overlook,”About.com called the band, “the best black metal band in the United States that you’ve probably never heard of,” while Thrash Pit opined, “…a shimmering brand of black metal which pierces hearts rather than suffocates lungs.”

Samuel: Guitars/Vocals

William: Bass

Sxuperion: Drums

HAVOK – Denver Thrashers To Kick Off U.S. Tour With SKELETONWITCH This Week

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on September 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Denver Thrash warriors HAVOK will kick off a massive U.S. tour this week with headliners SKELETONWITCH. The U.S. Abomination Tour will commence on September 14 in Athens, Ohio and run through nearly two months of shows, coming to a ceremonial close on November 17 in Cleveland, Ohio. Additional support will come from Early Graves and Mutilation Rites.

Comments guitarist Reece Scruggs: “We’re pumped as hell to be going out on the road with Skeletonwitch. The two of us along with Mutilation Rites and Early Graves touring together just seems to fit and make perfect sense. There will be plenty of dates, pretty much covering the entire U.S. So there is no excuse to miss this shred fest! BE THERE OR BE 100% SQUARE.”

HAVOK, called “the finest thrash band in existence,” by PopDose, unleashed their Point Of No Return EP early this Summer via Candlelight Records as a tide-me-over till their next full-length. The EP was recorded by the band with final touches by James Murphy (Death, Testament) and contains two new songs plus two HAVOK-ized Sepultura and Slayer covers.

Metal Underground gave the release a 4/5 rating, noting “the two original tracks on this EP are up there with the best material the band has produced, and the covers are heartfelt and well-performed,”adding that “thrash fans will delight in this offering.” Commended About.com: “HAVOK adequately display their penchant for crisp, musically precise thrash metal that proceeds at a fast gallop to a near blast,” while Exclaim added: “The two new songs that open this EP prove that these guys are way top-tier for modern thrash… “

SHADOWS FALL “Fire From The Sky” – A First-Rate Metal Execution, From New England’s Metal Ambassadors

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , on June 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SHADOWS FALL – The seventh studio album, Fire From The Sky, from Shadows Fall was released back on May 15th, 2012, via Razor & Tie. I bought my (unedited) copy at Super Walmart. That’s correct. Super Walmart. There are no cool and independent record stores anywhere near where I live, thus Super Walmart is my Metal pimp. I’ll have to admit I like Fire From The Sky a great deal and I’ll tell you why, (here and there).

I’ve always gravitated towards Shadows Fall’s sound. Enjoying their catalog of albums has come about quite easily for me. Maybe it’s cause I like quality Metal. Maybe it’s due to my being born and raised in New England? Over the years, I’ve never seemed to find anything that I dislike about the Metal of Shadows Fall. Even if there is some loyalty to the Boston Red Sox within the Shadows Fall band, I still feel they kick legitimate Metal ass. Their Metal has never failed to raise my adrenaline level a notch or two.

I have read many positive reviews for Fire From The Sky and deservedly so. A few reviews I’ve read have made me chuckle. A consistent “negative” jab at this new Fire From The Sky album has been that it’s “nothing new” and “it’s the same old” from Shadows Fall. Whoa. Stop right there. For decades, the likes of RUSH, Iron MaidenAC/DC and Motörhead have essentially stuck to their musical blueprints and have released “the same old” too. Therefore, I am guessing that Shadows Fall are in legendary Metal company then, huh? Sometimes the “let’s change for change sake” school of thought in Metal is better left for another day.

What do some people want nowadays? Did they expect Shadows Fall to release an album that sounded like Men Without Hats meets KROKUS? Do these same critics want Tony Bennet to record an Industrial Metal album? I’ve never bought into the “same old club” and never will. It’s like that ancient Metal troll that lives deep in the Pennsylvania wilderness once told me: “Stone, if it ain’t broke, d-d-d-on’t f-f-fix it”.

Shadows Fall have evolved musically as a band and that’s change alone. One only needs to listen to their albums in succession to understand that. Critics who’ve only listened to Fire From The Sky and no other Shadows Fall album and decide to use the words “same old” only allows their Metal credibility to stick out like a swollen and sore thumb.

The beefy Thrash Metal sound meets (melodic) Metalcore is what I jump up and down for most from Shadows Fall. Yes, there are Melodic Death Metal tendencies/vocals, only Shadows Fall is not Amon Amarth for crap sakes. (Amon Amarth Rules, by the way). Shadows Fall rules on Fire From The Sky and this is yet another album that finishes and I’m like: “What the F**K, keep going! Don’t end now!”

This is a damn excellent album from a damn excellent band. They’ve sharpened their Metal skills once again. The intensity, heavy grooves, brain imprinting harsh and harmonious vocals, impressive guitar parts (all), eye-popping drumming, smart lyrics and grand song structures are all back from Shadows Fall on Fire From The Sky. I’ll take the “same old” from this band 24/7 and on a month of Sundays. Adam Dutkiewicz has produced and engineered yet another tremendous album and I’m now bestowing this nickname upon him: Modern Metal Marvel. Metal be thy name.

I, OMEGA – The Ravenous – Debut EP Releases May 13th, 2012 On Bullet Tooth

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , on April 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Coming out of the Los Angeles area, I, Omega have been busy playing Southern California and writing songs for “The Ravenous” EP. Blending technical melodic metal with bursts of progressive rock in the realm of Protest The Hero or Periphery, they will no doubt make their mark on the scene in 2012. Fans can watch their announcement video on YouTube and a new video interview with live footage at PunkWorldViews.

Commenting on the recent signing to Bullet ToothI, Omega vocalist Clay Nevels said, ”Josh’s genuine enthusiasm for our music and our vision for this release is a breath of fresh air in a stale/apathetic industry. We are confident in Bullet Tooth’s ability to help us spread our music to all corners of the globe and we look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship between us and them.”

Bassist  Calvan Christ also commented, ”I’m very excited to be working with the guy that brought us bands like Hopesfall, Poison The Well, Bleeding Through, and Throwdown. I can’t wait to see where this will take I, Omega.” while guitarist Ryan Cano said, ”I feel very privileged to work with people who have brought me so much enjoyment and inspiration in past years through the bands they’ve put on the map. I feel blessed that they see something in us that they saw in all of those bands. I’m hoping for a long and mutually fruitful relationship with Bullet Tooth.”

I, Omega is a progressive metal quintet from the Los Angeles area, dead set on creating a sound that is bold and unique, as well as easily digestible. Shredding guitars with fast, upbeat drumming, beefy bass lines, and vocals ranging from angelic to devilish, all with a punk rock attitude.  Their sound is heavy and complex, but also leaves room for rhythmic grooves and catchy choruses.

I, Omega’s music conjures up emotions crossing the spectrum of the listener’s scope, from menacing and technical wizardry, to tasteful and subtle harmony that’s sure to sway even the harshest of listeners. I, Omega is here to make a difference and defend the right to be different.

OVERKILL ‘The Electric Age’ – Once Again, A Reminder Of Thrash Metal Supremacy

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , on April 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

OVERKILL – Yes that’s Chaly once again on the front cover of this new Overkill album. Another sign of Chaly and another new Overkill release means that the Thrash Metal genre is once again bigger, badder, meaner and stronger than it was before. Our Pit Bull of Thrash is once again unleashed. That’s how important Overkill is to Thrash Metal, in my most honest of Metal opinions. Overkill is THE worldwide leader of Thrash Metal. Why? Pure talent. Consistency. Legitimacy. Quality. Forget longevity… it’s their damn incredible and admirable perseverance that makes this band the iconic leader they are to Thrash Metal… and Metal in general too.

Okay, my ranting as a lifelong Overkill fan is now over. Um, no it’s not. On March 27th, 2012, The Electric Age, the sixteenth studio album from Overkill, was released on eOne Music. From the album opening drum blasts from Ron Lipnicki to the intensified vocals of Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth on Come And Get It, straight on through to this album’s completion, I felt and heard the authority and passion of a Thrash Metal band that boasts a true classic lineup in 2012. Metal as my witness, these five men of Thrash have been together long enough to be considered a “classic” Overkill lineup.

The jaw-dropping guitar licks of Dave Linsk and Derek “The Skull” Tailer cannot be denied, a one-two power-packed punch of guitar grandeur. The all-encompassing Thrash energy I receive from The Electric Age swirls around my senses, making me feel like I’ve landed feet-first in a Thrash Metal field of dreams, with my Metal chick by my side… and kegs of cold beer aplenty. D.D. Verni plays his bass (as usual) with a Thrashing vengeance and his trademark backing vocals are as powerful as ever.

Once I heard Come And Get It, Electric Rattlesnake and Wish You Were Dead, it’s as if the thunder strike had been aimed upon my brain, driving home the clear fact that Overkill is kicking some insane Thrash Metal ass in 2012, almost like they’ve never kicked ass like this before. Seriously. I’m so damn astonished by the totality of this Overkill ambush of Thrash on The Electric Age, that I want to fall to my knees and beg for mercy. Um, forget mercy… I want more.

What’s so damn crazy about Overkill, is there is always melody in them there grooves of Thrash they administer to my ears. Black Daze has the thick Groove Metal and Thrash Metal alliance happening and it’s superlatively played by Overkill on all counts. Whoa and throw some F’n cold water in my face. 21st Century Man is a song that’s ablaze with every fabulous aspect about Overkill that I could possibly think of. Killer vocals. Killer speed. Killer guitar solo. Killer double bass. Killer riffs. Killer everything. Metal be thy name.

If we’re talking about “Metal Album Of 2012” contenders, I am placing The Electric Age at the very top of my list right now. Overkill could have given up years ago and returned in 2012 as a “reunion band”. Instead, Overkill never went anywhere, this Thrash Metal band has done more than “stood the test of time”, Overkill has established themselves as THE measuring stick within our Thrash Metal community, never letting us loyal fans down. The Electric Age is just another fitting example of this band’s extensive Thrash supremacy. Metallica who?

WEDNESDAY 13 ‘Calling All Corpses’ – Horrificus Terrificus & Damn Fun Too!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, horror metal, horror punk, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on February 14, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

WEDNESDAY 13 – Yes, Wednesday 13 wears his Alice Cooper “badge of influence” on his sleeve. I find it admirable, thank you. Calling All Corpses is a Horror Punk/Metal album that Alice Cooper should have made last year without any billionaire producer pulling the strings. Instead, this is a Wednesday 13 album and he uses his ghoul-given talent and cool as hell band to deliver 13 horrifying songs of thump and stomp on Calling All Corpses. These are songs that fans of Horror Metal, Horror Punk, Gothic and Hard Rock should easily get motivated to bounce up and down to, while kicking their neighbors trash cans over, under a moonlit sky.

Calling All Corpses is a party album. A crank-it-up-loud album. A “who gives a shit about the economy that our elected politicians screwed up” album. Wednesday 13 obviously realizes that Rock ‘N Roll was supposed to be (gasp) FUN in the first place and runs with it with infectious gusto. Wednesday 13 will never release an album to make you “think”, hell no. Wednesday 13 makes hard & heavy driven music to accommodate your escape from the stupid-ass stimuli that invades your space and day.

I appreciate Wednesday 13 for not trying to impress any Rock scholar out there who feels that the Rock history’s sun set and rose on 1969. The Punk fueled I Wanna Be Cremated and the hammerin’ Ghoul Of My Dreams may never get performed on any elitist Grammy stage, still, these songs have more substance than half of the audio sewage I suffered through, while listening to and watching that music comedy awards show.

It is not a ghastly move to buy Calling All Corpses and become absorbed by the Horror Punk/Metal and lyrics that spill from it. Calling All Corpses does not come across as cliché’, nor does this album ever drift off into repetitious content. If you’re looking for cliché’ and repetition, then watch a re-run of last Sunday’s Grammy Awards. This is a style of music born from good-times Rock ‘N Roll and it’s deserving of my Metal praise. Metal be thy name.

* Calling All Corpses was released  on October 11, 2011, via DevCo Entertainment.

Calling All Corpses Cast and Crew:

Wednesday 13 – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards

Roman Surman – lead guitar, background vocals

Metal Odyssey’s Top Ten Metal Albums Of 2011

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , on December 17, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Top Ten Metal Albums Of 2011 – Oh the Metal albums I listened to during 2011! Metal be thy name, there were a Metal many. Metal many again. Regardless of how many Metal albums that did rip my eardrums apart and psyched me out during the process, I couldn’t possibly listen to every Metal album released this past year. It’s not humanly possible. I’ve compiled below, a list of ten Metal albums that for all Metal intents and purposes… kicked my Metal lovin’ ass during 2011.

Yes, you will see a couple of albums tied in this top ten list and my Metal boss (me) said it was all good. Choosing my top ten Metal albums for any given year is not easy! However, choosing my number one Metal album for 2011 was easy and Hemoptysis is without a doubt in my Metal mind, one of the best Metal bands to come forth in the past ten and possibly twenty years. You can call Hemoptysis Thrash, Death Thrash, Extreme and Metal. I call this band exceptional and their Misanthropic Slaughter album is number F’n ONE!

Hopefully you may agree with a few of these albums I’ve chosen for my top ten. A personal list of Metal taste it is. Each Metal album here for me bestows quality musicianship and songs, from beginning to end. The common thread each band below shares with one another, that can never be denied: They are all Defenders Of The Metal Faith and I salute each and every one!

IRON CLAW “A Different Game” – Metal Odyssey’s Comeback Band and Album Of 2011

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , , on December 7, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

IRON CLAW – Many bands and solo musicians make comebacks in the world of Rock each year. Notable acts the likes of Alice Cooper (The Band) and KING KOBRA made their impressive comebacks for certain in 2011. Anthrax made an album comeback (Worship Music) with Joey Belladonna returning to the forefront. BIOHAZARD is back. Beggars & Thieves are back too. The list is impressive as it is long. No, Black Sabbath can’t really count until next years album and tour. However, the one comeback band that amazed me beyond belief with their story during 2011 was: IRON CLAW.

IRON CLAW are in my mind, Heavy Music pioneers. IRON CLAW was a band on the scene when Heavy Metal was growing roots from Hard Rock. This band calls Scotland home and released an album of Classic Hard Rock in 2011 that you should know about (if you don’t know already). A Different Game made IRON CLAW the topic of conversation in many Hard Rock circles this past year. Released on Ripple Music, A Different Game was the first taste of new music from this band in nearly 4 decades!

I never, ever heard of IRON CLAW until this past year. I’ll tell you this much, IRON CLAW has served me right. Congratulations IRON CLAW on being named: Metal Odyssey’s Comeback Band Of 2011! Plus having: Metal Odyssey’s Comeback Album Of 2011! Metal be thy name!

See below the timeline of IRON CLAW posts featured on Metal Odyssey during 2011. Everything you’ve ever needed to know about IRON CLAW is right there for you! Feel free to become informed on the series of events leading up to the release of A Different Game, along with the intriguing Hard Rockin’ history (both past and present) of IRON CLAW. EYEHATEGOD – Last month, New Orleans’ own existential Hardcore Blues oddballs, EYEHATEGOD, successfully completed their near-month long Retox And Nihilism Over Europe Tour alongside Japanese doomers, Church Of Misery. The trek saw Louisiana’s favorite miscreants level over 20 cities, which included stops at Hellfest in France, Kriston Festin Spain, GSM Fest in Portugal, the Roskilde Fest in Denmark and the Stoned From The Underground Festival in Germany.
Commented Mike Williams of the experience: “We returned in mental puzzle pieces from a destructive, albeit highly functional European/Scandinavian tour with Church of Misery, bringing them to the usual EU haunts such as Paris, London, and Berlin etc… plus a few previously unvisited locales such as Helsinki and the former Soviet Bloc country Estonia. One highlight amongst many was playing in the middle of the people’s revolution in Athens, Greece and playing the almighty fests such as Stoned From The Underground and Hellfest. EYEHATEGOD performed new material on this educational insanity tour.”
Check out killer footage [filmed by mathiasnielsen666] of the band playing new song, “N’awlins Is The New Vietnam” at the Roskilde Festival HERE.
Closing out their summer of sonic devastation, EYEHATEGOD will spread their filth to the West Coast this weekend for two rare and special shows: The first will take place at the Oakland Metro Operahouse on Friday, August 12 with Impaled, Brainoil, Laudanum and others while the second will mark the kick-off of the long-anticipated and much talked-about Power The Riff Fest on Saturday, August 13 at the
Echo/Echoplex which will feature EYEHATEGOD, Pentagram,Winter, Pelican and more! California will never be the same….
EYEHATEGOD: California Weekend Invasion:
8/12/2011 Oakland Metro Operahouse – Oakland, CA w/ Impaled, Brainoil Laudanum, Badr Vogu, Hazzard’s Cure, The Burial Tide Doors @ 7:00pm [Info]
8/13/2011 Echo/Echoplex – Los Angeles, CA w/ Pentagram,  Winter, Pelican, Trap Them, All Pigs Must Die, Acephalix, Black Cobra, Skin Like Iron, Baptists, Masakari, Alpinist, Seven Sisters of Sleep, Aeges, Early Graves, Slave Doors @ Noon [TICKETS]
The band will play additional shows this Fall. Details to be announced soon… and if their lies are to be believed, 2012 will see the release of EYEHATEGOD‘s long-awaited new album. (Source: Earsplit PR)

SINISTER REALM – “The Crystal Eye”: Defends The Metal Faith Valiantly, In Epic And Prevailing Prominence

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, traditional metal with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING ALBUM REVIEW FOR THE CRYSTAL EYE MAY MOTIVATE YOU TO BUY THIS CD… AND MAKE YOU AWARE THAT TRUE AND REAL AMERICAN TRADITIONAL METAL DOES, AFTER ALLTRULY EXIST. YOU’VE BEEN METAL WARNED.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE ALREADY SMIRKING… JUST REMEMBER THIS: STONE DOESN’T BULLSHIT WHEN IT COMES TO METAL.

SINISTER REALM – Okay, so I was minding my own Metal business, when one night last week I checked my email inbox to find a message from Sinister Realm. I’m thinking to myself, what Metal message is Sinister Realm sending me? I was of course curious, for this Traditional Metal band from Allentown, Pennsylvania, has made quite a Metal name for themselves on this part of the East Coast. In the email was an invitation to review their newly released studio album: The Crystal Eye (Shadow Kingdom Records). A no brainer… I was more than Metal willing to give this new Sinister Realm album a listen. Then I listened again… and again. Metal be thy name, I could not believe what I was hearing. God almighty above, The Crystal Eye is an unreal Traditional Metal listening experience.

For all Metal intents and purposes, if you are to buy just one more newly released Metal CD this year, The Crystal Eye is as strong a candidate as any other. Whoa, did someone say “why Stone”? The reasons are easy to explain, therefore here is the Metal breakdown, in no particular Metal order:

Reason One: Let’s skip right to the instrumental that is Battle for the Sinister Realm. My God almighty, is this an intense song that embellishes every nuance that is golden about a Traditional Metal instrumental. Listening to the melodic sound that this song radiates, coupled with its old school Metal vibe and feel, I’m mesmerized that this band can capture such welcomed Traditional Metal magic, in 3:29.

Reason Two: Dual Metal guitars. John Kantner and John Risko. These two Metal axe men summon up all the glorious images of excitement, of days long ago, when my young ears experienced Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing for the first time. Yes, the Metal torch has been handed down… John Kantner and John Risko are two Metal guitarists that are happening NOW in 2011. Hearing is believing…

Reason Three: Alex Kristof on vocals is a convincing and strong presence. Without knowing, I will wager he is a lifetime devotee to the late Ronnie James Dio. Alex is the singer that Traditional Metal bands will search the clubs, internet and world over for… he’s that dynamic with his vocals. On the 8:54 epic, The Tower is Burning, his confidence rains down with each talented syllable he sings. Honestly, there isn’t a moment on The Crystal Eye where I’m not impressed with listening to Alex.

Reason Four: All eight songs embody the essence of how Traditional Metal is supposed to sound like. Powerful, epic and responsible for giving me the damn chills, is how I best describe The Crystal Eye. This album would kick mighty ass in the mid 80’s, only Sinister Realm is kicking mighty ass in the here and now. Metal written and played like this doesn’t grow on some F’n fruit tree, ready to be picked for harvest. The Metal I hear on all of these songs is potent with muscular relevance and cannot be denied by my ears.

Reason Five: Every band needs its rhythmic glue to hold the beats steady and Chris Metzger (drums) and John Shamus Gaffney (bass, background vocals) are titans to hear. With a steel solid production, both Chris and John’s ground quaking effectiveness is substantial and heard with clarity.

Reason Six: The title track: The Crystal Eye. Metal be thy name, this song is the epitome of just how riveting and compelling Traditional Metal can sound and feel like. This song moves me, man. While I’m listening to this song, I feel like I am that “man on the silver mountain” and I can do anything.

Music is subjective and personal to any individual. However, take my Metal advice on Sinister Realm… what you do with it is entirely up to you. The Crystal Eye isn’t a can of Metal whoop ass, instead, it’s a case of Traditional Metal whoop ass. I finish by saying: I listen to my hefty share of Metal and I declare The Crystal Eye as one of the very best Metal albums of 2011. Thanks to Sinister Realm, I’ve been reminded as to why Metal is the law.

Metal Odyssey Spotlight On: Marc Broude – Psychological Warfare – 2 Songs of Industrial Metal and Noise!

Posted in experimental rock, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, industrial metal, Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 22, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

MARC BROUDE – My never ending Metal quest to find Metal talent that is unsigned, DIY and real has crossed paths with an Industrial Metal and Noise musician known as: Marc Broude. The Metal Odyssey Spotlight is on Marc Broude and his 2 song EP: Psychological Warfare. Marc is the vocalist and plays all instruments on his music.

I liken the sound of Marc Broude’s music to that of Industrial Metal, where Marc is very down with that tag, he also considers his music to be representative of the Noise genre. Marc is from Chicago, Illinois and had started recording while living in a squatter artist collective back in 2005. During 2005, Marc started out in the Chicago based Noise outfit called: Panicsville. A cross-genre composer, Marc has played in various bands which represented genres of: Black Metal, Grindcore, Punk and Noise. If diversity is the key to Metal success, then Marc has associated with some hefty Metal diversity in the course of seven years.

I really appreciate the overwhelming heaviness, experimentalism and mixture of distortion that Marc has implemented into his music’s sound. Marc’s vocals seem to arise from the dark depths of the damned, while his guitar riffs and drumming create a wall of sound that engulfs my surroundings with a nightmarish, bazaar of the living dead mood and atmosphere. Perfect.

I can see a promising Metal future for Marc, his DIY work ethic, multi-tasking, multi-instrument competency and musical inventiveness should eventually draw some credible attention. Marc feels getting his music heard is more important than making money from it… that’s the characteristic of a real musician and an artist who believes in what he’s created.

You can listen to both Psychological Warfare and God Smacker by clicking on the music bar play buttons below. Warning – to all closed minded, uptight and constipated Pop mainstream music dum dums: Your freely invited to listen as well, only don’t send your laundry bill to Metal Odyssey if you crap your pants.

Listen to PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE by clicking on the play button below:

Listen to GOD SMACKER by clicking on the play button below:

Originally released in 2006 as a 50 piece limited edition 7″ which became out of print, Psychological Warfare was digitally remixed for re-release. Distribution is through IODA and Psychological Warfare will be available at all digital music stores, with the CD being available on Amazon and Tower in about a month from now.

* In 2009, Marc released a 72 minute, Dark Ambient dirge titled: Rites of Zen and Medicine. This release displayed a drastic change in Marc’s sound, with a fusion of free improvisation and Avant-Garde Jazz.

BACKSLIDER / NIMBUS TERRIFIX – Split: An Ultra-Tumultuous Grindcore and Hardcore Collision!

Posted in Extreme Metal, extreme music, grindcore, hardcore music, Heavy Metal, Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 8, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

BACKSLIDER / NIMBUS TERRIFIX – Releasing on May 17th, 2011, is Backslider / Nimbus Terrifix (Split) via Give Praise. Backslider is a two-man Grindcore/Hardcore force originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nimbus Terrifix is a Technical Hardcore outfit that calls Scranton, Pennsylvania: home base. In Metal preface, Backslider are representative of the future for Blastcore, while Nimbus Terrifix can set their sights on Hardcore notoriety, just as long as they remain so damn pissed off.

Both of these bands accentuate the raging noize and all things extreme about Metal. Listening to the split album from these two up and coming Hardcore bands is not something you want to do on the way to a “check-up” at the doctor’s office… both your blood pressure and heart rate will be increased while you are trying to feel if the skin has been ripped off your face. (I’m just kidding about the facial skin, then again, you never know).

No epics are in this genre of Metal. Nope. Just quick and obliterating Hardcore uppercuts to the chin that grind out frenzied drums, old school riffs and blunt force jabs of traumatizing vocals. You shall find no sanity in the punishing sounds that Backslider and Nimbus Terrifix dish out. In this world of Extreme Metal, song structures are obliterated into furious spasms of kick-to-the-teeth strikes and counter strikes that carry out one unified message: piss off mainstream.

Give yourself the gift of Hardcore this Spring and try out Backslider and Nimbus Terrifix… you might just find that the extreme punishment these two bands dish will have you asking for more. It’s just like putting your tongue on the terminals of a 9 volt battery, it shocks, it’s unpleasant and you still want more.

While I listen to both bands, I don’t know whether I want to break out or break in. Regardless, I realize that it was my own doing in opening up this can of extreme whoop-ass and I’ll open it again. In under twelve minutes, both bands combined to brutalize my senses and I’m alive to talk about it. It’s the unreal that I hear from both of these bands, that for all intents and purposes, makes it real to me. Metal be thy name.

STRAIGHT LINE STITCH – Shoot New Music Video, Behind The Scenes Footage Available!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

(Alexis Brown – Vocals)

(New York, NY) — STRAIGHT LINE STITCH have shot a brand new music video for their next single “One Reason” off their latest record The Fight Of Our Lives which came out earlier this year. Veteran director and band manager Dale ‘Rage’ Resteghini took on the directing duties.

Watch a sneak peak behind the scenes video here.

The band has no qualms about staying on the road this year. They recently announced off-dates with the one and only IN FLAMES during their run on the 2011 ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL. They’ve recently completed a handful of dates with road mates NONPOINT, Revolver magazine’s “Hottest Chicks In Hard Rock: Hell Hath No Fury” tour supporting IN THIS MOMENT and last but not least, DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL. All dates can be found here.

The band’s latest record The Fight Of Our LIves came out on March 22, 2011 to much critical praise. “‘The Fight of Our Lives’ is a good example of what happens when modern American metal-core is performed with passion and intensity,” says OUTBURN MAGAZINE. The band released their first single “Conversion” soon after with a video to follow, also directed by Resteghini.

STRAIGHT LINE STITCH originally hailing from Knoxville, TN, features Alexis Brown on vocals, Seth Thacker and Kris Norris on guitar, Jason White on bass, and Kanky Lora on drums.

IHSAHN – Confirmed For ProgPower USA

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 26, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Former Emperor vocalist/guitarist IHSAHN will make his first American solo appearance at ProgPower USA, scheduled September 14-17 at Center Stage in Atlanta. Confirmed by festival organizer Glenn Harveston, IHSAHN replaces Arcturus on the Friday evening lineup of the popular music festival. Tickets are nearly sold out; fans are encouraged to buy tickets now.

IHSAHN comments, “I am very excited to get the opportunity to play at ProgPower. My backing band, Leprous, played the festival last year and had a fantastic time. Given the nature of my solo-material, I believe this festival will be a great place to present it live.  I have already performed at several festivals/shows in Europe in 2009/2010 and will do a few more this year.”

IHSAHN’s performance is expected to include selections from all three solo albums – The Adversary (2006), Angl (2008) and his most recent, After (2010). “As compelling as Emperor’s best,” says Decibel in a review of After in their February 2010 issue. Continuing, the magazine notes, “IHSAHN sounds as fresh as he did fifteen years ago, but with the hindsight of a grown man.” Revolver called the album, “brimming with classical, goth, prog, and eighties-metal passages.”

After completes IHSAHN’s planned trilogy of initial recordings. The album showcases the Norwegian icon with drummer Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect), bassist Lars K. Norberg (Spiral Architect), and saxophonist Jorgen Munkeby (Shining). Currently at work on his fourth album, IHSAHN confirms he is eighty percent done with the songwriting and is planning for a mid-2012 release.

Spellemann (Norwegian Grammy) Award Nominee IHSAHN (born Vegard Tveitan) began playing music at a very early age. As a teenager, his friendship with Tomas Haugen (a.k.a. Samoth) would trigger the start of his music career — one that to date includes over fifty individual recordings, five high-profile Emperor European tours (the band reaching US shores on only three occasions) and the respect of fans and peers worldwide. In mid-2009, IHSAHN gave his first live performance in Oslo supporting Opeth.

IHSAHN is endorsed exclusively by Ibanez Guitars, Line 6, Steinberg and Blackstar Amplification.

Tickets for ProgPower USA are available now via Ticketmaster.
