DARSOMBRA Recovers Majority of Lost Band Gear; Duo To Play Free Gratitude Show This Saturday

Baltimore-based audio/visual duo DARSOMBRA will proudly play a free show in their hometown this Saturday , August 24th, in full gratitude to their local scene for helping them recover a huge arsenal of stolen equipment!

Following a recent break-in burglary of the DARSOMBRA abode, with thieves getting away with seemingly irreplaceable guitars, computers, amps, visual equipment and more, the word made it to the proper parties in time and citizens/musicians/friends of the band helped track down and recover nearly all of the lost gear! In their recent band newsletter the members simply stated: “Watch out, world!!! This show is FREE because WE LOVE YOU and wanna say THANK YOU for all the love we received after our home was burglarized. So come on out and let us say it in person:” If you’re in the area, please come celebrate the duo celebrate and give thanks. The duo will perform at Windup Space and will be joined by friends Yeveto, Height, The Immortal Jellyfish and Carly Ptak “and the band documentary for The Human Host Movie.

DARSOMBRA is planning to tour the entire country on their most intense stateside tour ever in the Spring of 2014; fans are encouraged to contact the band if you want them to come to your town on this widespread trek. Stay tuned for more band updates over the coming months.

Following releases on At A Loss, Public Guilt, Underradar and others, DARSOMBRA signed with Exile On Mainstream for the release of Climax Community. The three tracks on the LP traversing forty-five minutes of the outfit’s unique, slow-building, organic transcendental rock. Brian Daniloski, a veteran of heavier, sludgier, grittier rock bands such as Meatjack and Trephine, controls the sound of DARSOMBRA, alternating between mammoth vocal swells and soundscapes and searing guitar riffs, leads, loops, and samples, combining elements of metal, psychedelic rock, experimental/drone, prog and krautrock. But there is more than just Daniloski’s sonic world at play here as video artist Ann Everton takes his work to the next level by bringing her DARSOMBRA-induced visions to the stage through her kinetic psychotropic video projections, creating a constantly shifting backdrop to Daniloski’s live performances.

LYNCH MOB – 1992 S/T Album Is: Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

5 Out Of 5 METAL Fists!

LYNCH MOB – I never owned this Lynch Mob classic, until 2 weeks ago. I went to Omega Records in downtown Dayton, Ohio and found this Lynch Mob gem sitting in the used section of “Metal” for just $2.99 (U.S.). Whoa!! No brainer time! I grabbed this self-titled Lynch Mob CD in 1 micro-second and the rest is history, baby! The CD, jewel case and liner notes are in pristine condition too! Whoa again!

Best Metal Buddy, Scott Coverdale, had texted me (back when I first moved to the Dayton area) that there was an Omega Records close by. It’s quite the indie record store and I’ll write all about it in a future post. For now, this post is dedicated to the S/T Lynch Mob album from 1992 and it’s:

Stone’s METAL Pick Of The Day!

This sophomore album from Lynch Mob is so damn good, it’s scary. Seriously. I could NOT give this Lynch Mob classic anything less than 5 Metal fists! The guitar master and legendary George Lynch is incredible on this album (as always) and vocalist Robert Mason is freaking smokin’!! I’d go as far to say this Lynch Mob album is better than their 1990 debut: Wicked Sensation.

I absolutely love Wicked Sensation too; I especially admire the vocals of Oni Logan. However, Lynch Mob is so pumped up with psyched-out energy and Hard Rock bliss that I’ll place this album in my top 20 Hard Rock albums of all-time and not blink an eye!! Metal be thy name!! The loyal (and talented) Mick Brown is on drums and Anthony Esposito is the bassist. What a lineup this version of Lynch Mob was!

I honestly never think of fast forwarding, at any moment, when this CD is cranking into my brain. No way. The kick-ass bonus about this album is Lynch Mob performs a whiz-bang cover of Tie Your Mother Down from the ultra-iconic Queen. This Lynch Mob cover kicks absolute, 100%, mega-potent ass!! My unequivocal Metal recommendation, to ALL my Metal and Hard Rock brethren is: find this CD and buy it!! If you already own it, then… you Rock!!

I must have listened to this entire debut from Brand New Machine at least 10 times now! Yes, I recommend y’all buy it!

Here’s the fun part: this song is instantly memorable and Heavy Rockin’… only the ENTIRE debut from Brand New Machine is unreal!! I don’t hear one second on this CD that I don’t like!! Brand New Machine is now my brand new favorite Hard Rock band!! Metal be thy name!!

This is an album I was praying for KROKUS to release, after such an amazing album as Hoodoo.

Guitarist Mandy Meyer returns for this 17th KROKUS studio album and the legendary Freddy Steady is not back on drums. Kosta Zafiriou fills in admirably on drums, by the way. With lineup maneuvering aside, the core of KROKUS is back on Dirty Dynamite and it’s all out-of-sight! Guitar driven, heavy bass and drums all combine with the unmistakable vocals from the legendary Marc Storace. Twelve electrified songs on this album and I’ve got KROKUS fever once again! Nobody get me no damn doctor!

KROKUS does a stupendous job with covering the iconic Beatles timeless classic: Help! If you haven’t heard this cover song yet, trust me, it’s not what you’d expect… KROKUS have absolutely given Help! a heaping dosage of Hard Rock relevance and made it their own. It’s ostrich bump city, all over my face and arms, each time I listen to Help! covered by KROKUS. Sounds crazy? Give it a listen!! Whoa.

KROKUS has proven time and again their prominence in the world of Hard Rock; after so many decades, this legendary band deserves any and all of the accolades that are thrown their way. Chip DiMonick – Reveals What Album He Cannot Live Without!

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ROCKS. This grand metropolis doesn’t just Rock due to their major league sports champions. Nope. Pittsburgh also Rocks cause it’s the home of Chip DiMonick. Blue-collar Hard Rock from a blue-collar city. Chip and his band have won many Rock ‘N Roll awards of their own, in the greater Pittsburgh area; while earning tidal waves of fans with their catchy original songs and DIY work ethic.

Recently, Chip DiMonick took the time to answer a question for Metal Odyssey. Thank you Chip! The question: What album (minus your own) could you not be able to live without? It can be from any genre of music and have as many words as you’d like too. Here’s what Chip had to say:

“The album I couldn’t live without is “The Strange Case Of…” by Halestorm. This album is total quality from Track 1 through Track 15 (yes, I have the 15-track deluxe edition!). Very few albums in the history of rock have consistently good songs throughout. There always seems to be a crappy song in there somewhere. But not on “Strange Case Of!”

The album has so much diversity, from soft ballads to aggressive screamers. So, no matter what mood I’m in, I can find songs to match on this release. Finally, I’ll say that the songwriting is impeccable. The melodies, the riffs, the hooks…it’s just ALL THERE. I hope Halestorm can recreate the magic they conjured up with this album with their future efforts. If they can, rock fans like me will have lots of timeless music to indulge in for years – or decades – to come!”

LED ZEPPELIN 2 Is Back! New Tour Dates Announced!

The path trodden by most UK Rock bands since the
glory days of The Beatles, Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, The Who, Purple
and Zeppelin has been a lonely one. Punk cleared the way for Duran
Duran, Culture Club, Wham! and ultimately Rick Astley… Vive la
Revolution!

Shunned in their home country it wasn’t easy for Brits playing
‘classic rock’. Even a minor blip in the mid to late 80’s only
produced success for Whitesnake (who sacked their British members) and
Def Leppard. Bands like FM, The Quireboys, and Thunder had to take a
back seat to American rockers such as Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Poison,
Metallica, and Guns N’ Roses. Said UK bands then had to watch as
grunge flooded the plains leaving them up sh*t creek without even a
raft, let alone paddle. As this happened the UK looked to Peter
Andre, Take That and eventually The Spice Girls as its major players.

Evilyn Strange have been around since the Britpop darlings Suede,
Blur, Radiohead, Pulp and Oasis. Laughed at by the press since day
one for having long hair and playing guitar solo’s it hasn’t been easy
for the Anglo Swedish trio. Did they care? As Adam Ant once said,
‘Ridicule is nothing to be scared of…’

So here’s Mourning Phoebe, the flawed (and all the more perfect for
it) album by the type of band that the UK doesn’t want to exist. They
won’t win a Brit Award like Boyzone, and they will NEVER be cool
enough to appear on MTV… but they can just about live with
that.

From MP: I need to correct a huge misconception about The Winery Dogs that I keep seeing floating around the internet… this band was ONLY EVER myself, Richie & Billy!

John Sykes was NEVER a part of this band! Myself & Billy were previously working w John on an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PROJECT (consisting of all strictly John’s material).

When that didn’t pan out, Billy & I began working FROM SCRATCH with Richie (with all 3 of us collaborating together) on an entirely new band…and THAT is when The Winery Dogs were born. It is important that people understand this!!

Iron Man 3’s Ashley Hamilton Leads Star-Studded Group to Explosive Comeback

Los Angeles, CA –Appropriately packed with adrenaline rushing action, like its corresponding famous superhero movie Iron Man 3, is the latest single Let’s Go All the Way from rock super-group The Wondergirls. Included on the Iron Man 3: Heroes Fall movie soundtrack, the single was inspired by the movie and is available for download now on iTunes. The track features British superstar Robbie Williams as well as band members, actor Ashley Hamilton, Chris Lloyd (former VP/ A&R executive at Flip Records), Jay Gordon (Orgy) and Doug Ardito (Puddle of Mudd). Complete with a star-studded lineup, the group is back to showcase a fresh new image and pick up where they left off – with fans screaming their names.

The recording of “Lets Go All The Way” was recorded over several years, numerous times and every location possible. “We’ve recorded at some of the best recording facilities available, as well as rehearsal rooms, houses, garages, you name it” says Gordon. The song itself has brought this band of friends through unchartered territories and unpredicted experiences. While recording the vocals with Robbie Williams on Super Bowl Sunday, Gordon went to root for his team only to find Adele making tea and watching the game, piercing him star-struck. It’s this type of untraditional structure of recording and experiences around the song that have all influenced this power packed track.

“The original 80’s (Sly Fox) version has its unique character and signature…(but) everyone is loving this version” answers Gordon. The band charged the track with an electric beat that is driven by classic rock drums, crunchy guitar licks and raging synths all supported by refined vocal chops. The superhero anthem stirs up the perfect inclination of raw emotion and energy, which in turn is infused into the listeners. Opening with subtle intensity in the verses, leading to an explosion in the chorus that holds until the end of the song.

In its beginnings, The Wondergirls, who are based in Los Angeles, included numerous notable names such as Scott Weiland and Mark McGrath. When the group first formed, politics held The Wondergirls back from truly capitalizing and flourishing. While filming Iron Man 3, Hamilton felt it was the perfect storm for The Wondergirls to be revived and bring his initial plan into fruition. The Wondergirls recently signed to Across The Universe Records, with an expectant EP out soon.

KING KOBRA – “II” Due For Release In July On Frontiers Records

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of KING KOBRA’s new studio album II on July 5th in Europe and July 9th in North America.

King Kobra’s long-awaited reunion album “King Kobra” (s/t) released on Frontiers Records in 2011, left no doubt that this was a band to be reckoned with. Even though nearly 25 years had passed since the original line-up recorded the landmark “Ready To Strike” and “Thrill Of A Lifetime” albums, the energy and immediacy of the bands lightning attack had not diminished one iota and fans responded in kind.

“We chose to name this album “II” because it is both the second album of our reformation with Frontiers Records as well as the second generation of the band with Paul Shortino as lead vocalist,” says guitarist David Michael-Philips. “Paul’s unique style gives the band a new feel apart from what we were in the 80s with original singer Mark/Marcie Free. I think the “re-boot” naming gives Paul the credit he deserves while paying homage to our original singer and sound”.

The thick, soulful vocals of Paul Shortino, dual guitarists Mick Sweda and David Michael-Philips, and the thundering bass and drums of Johnny Rod and Carmine Appice delivered an album that, while easily carrying on the tradition of the first two releases, brought a contemporary twist to a signature melodic, hard rock style. “The “70’s” flavour of this new album was a conscious move to incorporate our influences into the music,” says David Michael-Philips, while Carmine Appice adds “King Kobra was a band in the ‘80s with great players…and had roots in the ‘70s also.. We tried to make a cool combination of both, which I think we achieved with this new album”.

Produced by David Henzerling with Carmine Appice and Paul Shortino, II digs into King Kobra hard rock roots to create an album that has all the swagger and swing of the classic 70’s albums (think Montrose, Bad Company, Deep Purple and even Carmine’s own legendary Cactus) with a crystal clear sound that combines the best of both analogue and digital recording techniques. From the tight and punchy “Have A Good Time” to the 8-minute epic “Deep River”, “II” shows a more mature band confident of its songwriting ability performing with the technical prowess garnered over years of experience.

The Pretty Goodbyes – Illuminates Alternative Indie Rock On Their Debut Demo EP “Now We Run”

THE PRETTY GOODBYES – The 3 song debut demo EP, Now We Run, from the Loughborough based 4-piece band The Pretty Goodbyes was released back on August 6th, 2012. When very, very cool Alternative/Indie Rock crosses my Rockin’ path, I’m gonna bellow about it; right here on Metal Odyssey. This unsigned UK band would be signed by me in a micro second, if I had the (prestigious) ability to do so for a (knowledgeable) record label.

This Now We Run EP has unveiled 3 songs to my senses and ALL 3 are remarkably memorable, well written and downright (gulp) fun! I always appreciate the way a talented band like The Pretty Goodbyes can coalesce the beauty of 80’s New Wave, late 80’s College Radio and Early 90’s Alternative while still maintaining a balance of Post-Punk and Modern Indie Rock/Alternative sound and vibes; all the while keeping the flames of Indie Pop to a tolerable minimum (if any). Phew! I got that off my chest!

I’m digging this band and the vocals of George Evans are nothing short of terrific. Any serious fan of Alternative and Indie Rock will embrace the music from The Pretty Goodbyes. The Pretty Goodbyes have obviously learned at a very early stage, quality songs are their ticket to success; and I see nothing less happening for this band in the future. PURSON – PREMIERE “SPIDERWOOD FARM” VIA DECIBEL MAGAZINE

Apr. 10, 2013, LOS ANGELES – Purson, the female-fronted UK band that the BBC has said are “channeling the power of the psychedelic ‘70s,” premiere the song “Spiderwood Farm” today via Decibel (http://www.decibelmagazine.com/featured/streaming-purson-spiderwood-farm/).

The London-based band, having already made a name quite a splash overseas with their glam-influenced psych-rock, release The Circle and The Blue Door on Apr. 30 via (Metal Blade/Rise Above Records). Kerrang said singer/guitar player Rosalie Cunningham “will have you spellbound” and added that Purson’s music is “like the best bits of ‘60s and ‘70s rock – think Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cream and loads of other classic rock cats – brought to 2013 in a sweet-smelling musical haze.”

“Spiderwood Farm is about ghosts,” explains Rosalie (who is also known for her previous stint as the front woman in the all-girl goth outfit Ipso Facto). “I was looking through a copy of Sounds from 1972 when I saw a band mentioned called Spiderwood Farm. From there I thought of a song about ex-dwellers, who are, of course dead. The council is trying to evict them, but they’re not doing anything wrong.”

Directed by Chris Martin, Rosalie said of the setting: “We found this great place in Brixton, South London called Café Cairo that look as though it has been transplanted there from the souk in Marrakesh.” The clip gives a perfect visual to the band’s trippy psychedelia, or as they call it “vaudeville carny psych.”

Decibel has been an early champion of the band with Editor-in-Chief Albert Mudrian calling The Circle and The Blue Door “the best debut of 2013” and featuring the band in their May issue.

IRON TONGUE – Arkansas Southern Rock Miscreants Join Neurot Recordings

Neurot Recordings is pleased to release the debut from Arkansas Southern Rock collective IRON TONGUE! Fronted by Chris “CT” Terry, the founding frontman of Sludge legion Rwake, IRON TONGUE formed when a group of veteran players with diverse musical backgrounds found a common interest in the need to get down and dirty and way, way gone.

Churning a soulful blend of girthy, heavily amped, blues-based rock, IRON TONGUE aren’t singing of magical moonlit escapades. The band offer up songs of pain, regret and heartache that recall everything from the proto-metal stomp of Blue Cheer and Grand Funk to the darkest hours of Kiss, Deep Purple, Buddy Guy and ‘Skynyrd. Having spent over three years performing steadily throughout the South, IRON TONGUE has traversed the Midwest and East Coast with Memphis kindred spirits The Dirty Streets, in addition to sharing bills with the likes of Black Tusk, Scott Kelly, The Sword, High on Fire, Crowbar, The Body, Lita Ford and fellow Arkansans Pallbearer. A split 7” with The Dirty Streets, featuring a ballsy version of KISS’s “Two Timer” served as a precursor to the creation of their debut full-length for Neurot.

Entitled The Dogs Have Barked, The Birds Have Flown, the seven track offering was recorded and produced by soundsmith Billy Anderson (Melvins, Sleep, Neurosis, etc) at IRON TONGUE guitarist Jason Tedford’s Wolfman Studios. Called “a solid slab of balls to the wall shameless rock, with a power and an edge and soul that rarely exists in music today,” by Neurosis’ Steve Von Till, The Dogs Have Barked, The Birds Have Flown is set for release via Neurot Recordings on May 27th in Europe and May 28th in North America.

Comments drummer Stan James of joining the Neurot family: “IRON TONGUE is excited and honored to be a part of the Neurot team! We are looking forward to working hard every step of the way and we are committed to making music that everyone will be proud of.”
