WITCH CROSS – Confirmed To Support GOTTHARD In Copenhagen And Performing At HEAVY METAL MANIACS FESTIVAL In Holland!

WITCH CROSS

WITCH CROSS have been confirmed as support for GOTTHARD at Amager Bio in Copenhagen on October 23rd – WITCH CROSS will also be appearing at the Heavy Metal Maniacs Festival in Holland, on October 27th

_________________________________________

This year The Swiss Hard Rock band Gotthard celebrate their 20 year anniversary, only with a great tragedy still fresh in their minds. In the autumn of 2010 the Group’s charismatic lead singer Steve Lee died in a motorcycle accident, leaving the four surviving members at a crossroads in their career. Gotthard decided however to continue and after having auditioned more than 400 singers the job went to Nic Maeder, who was announced as the new front man in November.

The 4th June saw the five Swiss release a new album,  entitled Firebirth.

According to bassist Marc Lynn it has been unreal how easy and painless Maeders incorporation into the band has been – “as if everyone in the band has known him always” – and said Firebirth was infused by a newfound spark and a furious energy.

In other words, something to look forward to when Nic Maeders is exposed to the Danes in Amager Bio.

Sharing the stage that night will be Witch Cross. The Danish Heavy Metal band performs for only the second time in 27 years on stage in Denmark.

Earlier this year, the band played their first show together since 1986. The concert, at  the German Metal festival Keep It True, was chosen as the site for the reunification of the band after nearly three decades of separation. In July they took to the stage at the Metal Magic Festival in Fredericia and now they can be experienced once again in Amager Bio on October 23rd.

More WITCH CROSS news to come!

QUIET RIOT – Artisan News recently caught up with legendary drummer and QUIET RIOT leader, Frankie Banali, getting the scoop on the 30th Anniversary of Metal Health and current band news. Check out the interview video footage below of Frankie Banali!

Metal Health, QUIET RIOT’s third studio album, was released back on March 11th, 1983. Metal Health was the first Heavy Metal album to achieve #1 status on the Billboard 200. This Rock and Heavy Metal historic album boasts three chart hits that helped shape the 80’s decade of arena and stadium pandemonium: Bang Your Head (Metal Health), Cum On Feel The Noize and Slick Black Cadillac.

The iconic Metal Health lineup: Kevin DuBrow (vocals), Carlos Cavazo (guitar & backing vocals), Rudy Sarzo – bass & synthesizer and Frankie Banali (drums & backing vocals).

To date, Metal Health has sold more than 10 million copies, 6 million copies in The United States alone.

KISS RULES! Wanna See My KISS ARMY Patch I Bought? It’s Really Cool…

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 30, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Last Sunday I went out shopping for back-to-school stuff with the girls. Shopping for school supplies can get very boring for a middle-aged Metalhead; unless you stumble upon cool KISS stuff, like the KISS Army patch you see above! Whoa!

One of the stores we went to is called Michaels. This store sells arts and crafts galore. It’s a very clean and organized store too. Michaels is North America’s largest arts and crafts retailer, with 1,079 namesake stores.

As I walked around Michaels I saw this KISS Army patch for sale on an endcap display. Since my first KISS Army patch (on my first denim jacket) has been long gone for decades, I decided it was time to renew! What’s the price for this KISS Army patch you ask? $5 in U.S. funds. Whoa.

Here is what a Michaels store looks like:

In case you wanted to know, here is what the cardboard backing (the patch is on) looks like:

As you can see in the above photo, C&D Visionary Inc. distributes this cool KISS Army patch. C&D Visionary Inc. is a leader in selling to merchants tons of pop-culture and Rock ‘N Roll related items. They have a website, only it’s a wholesale site for retailers with valid sellers permits only. Still, it’s a fantastic site to check out if you’re  not a retailer: http://www.cdmerch.com

LET’S GET ROKKEN WITH DOKKEN – “BROKEN BONES” OUT IN SEPTEMBER VIA FRONTIERS RECORDS

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 29, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Frontiers Records is proud to announce the return of melodic hard rockers, Dokken; the band’s 11th studio album, BROKEN BONES, has been confirmed for release on September 21st in Europe and September 25th in North America.

The album will be released in two configurations: standard CD and limited edition CD in digipak with a bonus DVD, which features a comprehensive “Making Of The Album” documentary.

BROKEN BONES is produced by Dokken frontman and namesake, Don Dokken, and is mixed by Bob St. John (Extreme, Duran Duran, Collective Soul) and Wyn Davis (Black Sabbath, Dio, Whitesnake) and mastered by famed engineer Maor Appelbaum (Halford, Yngwie Malmsteen, Sepultura). The new set features a return to the band’s signature sound of catchy melodies, hot riffs and monster production.

Don Dokken commented, “We’ve never had a #1 hit; we’ve just kept touring winning fans over one by one.”  The first single from the album will be “Empire”; click here to check out a sample of the song.  Please see below for the track listing for BROKEN BONES.

Dokken exploded out of the hotbed that was the hard rock and Heavy Metal scene in Los Angeles in the early ‘80s. Such classic albums as TOOTH AND NAIL, UNDER LOCK AND KEY and BACK FOR THE ATTACK were all certified multi-platinum, with songs like “Alone Again,” “Just Got Lucky,” “Into the Fire,” “It’s Not Love” and “Dream Warriors” still being regarded as amongst the genre’s finest. Dokken was one of the first groups to sell a million copies of their DVD “Unchain The Night.”

The group continues to tour the world extensively and has shared the stage with AC/DC, Metallica, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Kiss, Scorpions, Bon Jovi and many more. To date, the band has sold upwards of 10 million albums worldwide.  The group has been nominated for a Grammy as well as an American Music Award. In 1988, Don was awarded the keys to the city of Los Angeles by Mayor Tom Bradley declaring January 27th as “Dokken Day” for his charity contributions to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital.

Dokken is: Don Dokken (vocals), Mick Brown (drums), Jon Levin (guitar) and Sean McNabb (bass).

BROKEN BONES Track Listing:

  1. Empire
  2. Broken Bones
  3. Best Of Me
  4. Blind
  5. Waterfall
  6. Victim Of The Crime
  7. Burning Tears
  8. Today
  9. For The Last Time
  10. Fade Away
  11. 11.Tonight

QUIET RIOT 1996 ‘Greatest Hits’ – Yes, I Bought This CD Today! QUIET RIOT EPK You Must Check Out! WHOA!

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal bands, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 28, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

QUIET RIOT – This morning I stumbled upon this Quiet Riot Greatest Hits CD at my local Super Walmart. It was released back in 1996 via Epic / Pasha. This CD cost me $5 (U.S.) and that’s not too shabby. What inspired me most (besides being a QR fan) to buy this CD are the two previously unreleased (live) tracks: Bang Your Head (Metal Health) and Let’s Go Crazy. Within the liner notes, there’s no mention as to where these two live tracks were recorded. That’s a shame.

I already own the Super Hits CD of Quiet Riot. The Super Hits was originally released back in 1999 via Sony Music. (See photos of alternate CD covers below). The only songs that are common between these two CD’s I’m discussing here are: Cum On Feel The Noize, Bang Your Head (Metal Health), Slick Black Cadillac and Mama Weer All Crazee Now.

You know how it is. Being loyal to a (huge) group of bands you grew up with can make you want to own every one of their CD titles that’s out there. The way I operate, I grab the greatest hits titles too; especially if the CD covers are different. I’m probably considered a Heavy Metal CD hoarder. I think I’ve mentioned this once or twice in the past about myself. Life goes on regardless…

I’m quite psyched that I finally bought this Quiet Riot Greatest Hits CD. All these years I’ve never realized two previously unreleased (live) tracks were on it. Yes, both live tracks sound very, very cool. I’ll add that both live tracks don’t sound like the (also very cool) 1983 US Festival tracks.

The Heavy Metal of Quiet Riot has lifted my spirits for decades now… and that is something I can never put a price on. Metal be thy name.

QUIET RIOT Greatest Hits – Track Listing:

Cum On Feel The Noize

Bang Your Head (Metal Health)

Slick Black Cadillac

The Wild & The Young

Mama We’re All Crazy Now – (as it’s spelled on the liner notes)

Party All Night

The Joker

Stay With Me Tonight

Callin’ The Shots

Bang Your Head (Metal Health) (Live)

Let’s Go Crazy (Live)

JEFF LYNNE – Rock Music Legend Returns In October With Two Albums; Releasing On Frontiers Records

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Music, rock albums, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on August 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

“It all comes down to what you truly love doing, and what I love doing is overdubbing and making new sounds out of things that are sometimes quite ordinary on their own, but when you put them together, they make something new–or something that sounds new. Just discovering things like that musically is a pleasure.”  – JEFF LYNNE, 2012

JEFF LYNNE, one of rock’s most iconic figures, is returning to make some new waves and shed a little electric light.

The creative force of ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA and the singularly accomplished singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer will release two albums on October 5th in G.A.S, October 8th in the UK and Rest of Europe, October 9th in North America via Frontiers Records: the solo disc LONG WAVE, a heartfelt and vivid tribute to some of the very songs that originally inspired him, and MR. BLUE SKY – THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA. For the latter album, the British artist has artfully revisited and re-recorded–at his home studio in Los Angeles– the greatest hits of Electric Light Orchestra, actually improving on some of the most classic and beloved recordings ever.

The release of LONG WAVE and MR. BLUE SKY – THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA mark the 40th anniversary of ELO. LYNNE’s legacy will further be celebrated with releases in 2013 including ELO Live! plus expanded reissues of the ELO’s 2001 album Zoom and LYNNE’s first solo album in 1990, Armchair Theater. For up to date info on all things JEFF LYNNE and ELO, go here: www.elo.biz

LONG WAVE powerfully celebrates the music of a time when LYNNE’s lifelong passion for music began, evoking an era back when old standards were just giving way to rock & roll. He somehow makes pre-rock standards like “Bewitched, Bothered And Bewildered,” “Smile” and “Love Is A Many Splendored Many Thing” — along with a few of his favorite gems from the Sixties such as the first single “Mercy, Mercy,” “Let It Rock” and “So Sad” — his own with these loving versions. LYNNE’s deeply felt and musically brilliant one-man-band takes add up to an inspired love letter to music itself — and an exquisite reflection of the way songs grace and change our lives.

“I call this new album Long Wave because all of the songs I sing on it are the ones heard on long wave radio when I was a kid growing up in Birmingham, England,” LYNNE explains. “These songs take me back to that feeling of freedom in those days and summon up the feeling of first hearing those powerful waves of music coming in on my old crystal set. My dad also had the radio on all the time, so some of these songs have been stuck in my head for 50 years. You can only imagine how great it felt to finally get them out of my head after all these years.”

MR. BLUE SKY – THE VERY BEST OF ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA is a powerful testament to LYNNE’s enduring artistry and his singular desire to get things right once and for all. Featuring such classics as “Evil Woman, “Don’t Bring Me Down,” “Livin’ Thing” and “Mr, Blue Sky,” the result is, in effect, a kind of showdown between JEFF LYNNE today and his extremely illustrious past, and thanks to improved technology and recording artistry, LYNNE somehow comes out on top again. It’s a fresh chance to hear these extraordinary songs sounding sharper and clearer than the old versions.

“There was a big reason I wanted to re-record these ELO songs,” says LYNNE. “When I listen to the old versions they don’t sound the way I thought they did when I first wrote and recorded them. I wanted to use the experience I’ve gained producing records ever since and have a completely new try at them. I’m not saying the old versions aren’t good; I like them very much. We were doing our best, but experience and technology also play a big a big part, and these new ones sound much more solid and tight.”

The album includes a never-before-heard bonus track The Point Of No Return and a very special version of “10538 Overture” that’s a nod to ELO’s 40th anniversary.

The songs that JEFF LYNNE wrote and sang–and the recordings that he so expertly arranged and produced for ELO — have endured beautifully and are perhaps even more beloved today than they were back in the Seventies and Eighties. By any standard whatsoever, ELO is one of the most remarkable success stories in rock history. Consider just the facts: ELO has sold over 50 million records worldwide, and continues to be a remarkably popular catalog.

Between 1972 and 1986, LYNNE wrote and produced 26 Top Forty hits in the United Kingdom, and 20 Top Forty hits in the United States, including 20 Top Twenty smashes in the UK and 15 Top Twenty smashes in the U.S. Even more remarkably, the ELO catalog continues to have tremendous impact, as demonstrated powerfully when the compilation All Over The World: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra was released in 2005 and became a Top Ten album in a number of international markets including England.

Outside of the success of ELO, LYNNE has led a remarkable career that has found him taking the lessons learned leading ELO and using them to help produce and collaborate with many of the greatest musical artists of all time, including a number of LYNNE’s all-time heroes including Roy Orbison, Del Shannon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and remarkably, even the Beatles themselves, as well as contemporaries like Tom Petty and Joe Walsh, whose new album Analog Man LYNNE recently helped produce. Together with Harrison, Orbison, Petty and Bob Dylan, LYNNE was, of course, a member of the Grammy award-winning Traveling Wilburys – a super group like no other.

“I’ve been in love with music since I was probably just five years old,” says LYNNE. “I was made for music then — and I still am today.”

Wanna See My JUDAS PRIEST ‘Painkiller / The Sharpest Cuts’ Cassette? It’s Really Cool…

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

JUDAS PRIEST – That’s it at the top! That’s my Judas Priest Painkiller / The Sharpest Cuts cassette! It’s still sealed in its original plastic wrap too. This is a 9 song greatest hits. This title was released back in 1990, via Columbia.

I haven’t opened this cassette to play it for I already have all these songs on CD’s. This very cool Judas Priest cassette I discovered at a thrift store last Winter. I paid a whopping 50 cents (U.S.) for this cassette. 50 cents!

Here is what the back of this Judas Priest cassette looks like:

On the back cassette sleeve is the track listing. A bunch of type (so tiny I cannot read it) is on the right side. With that said, there is this red type in the center that reads: Demonstration Not For Sale. Whoa! I always love it when I stumble upon a vinyl album, CD or cassette that was distributed as a promotional copy only. Usually these “demonstration” copies are not that abundant in the open marketplace.

I’ve searched around the worldwide web, discovering that this particular Judas Priest promo cassette has been offered for sale. In other words, the few occurrences when I found this cassette, it was no longer available. Whoa! I’m leaning towards this promo cassette being kinda rare.

Here is what the spine of this cassette looks like:

JUDAS PRIEST – Back in July of 1982, the eighth studio album, Screaming For Vengeance, from Judas Priest was released. This album was an instant Metal classic. Now, in 2012, this album is iconic. On September 4th, Screaming For Vengeance – Special 30th Anniversary Edition (CD/DVD) will be released via Legacy.

I remember this album being released in ’82 like it was yesterday! I just cannot believe it’s been 30 years though. Screaming For Vengeance is exhibit #1 of what timeless Heavy Metal sounds like. Multi- Platinum and incredibly influential to the world of Metal. I knew back in ’82 that this album was sensational; little did I know that I would look upon it now with such immeasurable Metal reverence. Metal be thy name.

The CD includes 6 bonus tracks, 4 of which are previously unreleased live tracks (Electric Eye, Riding On The Wind, Screaming For Vengeance and You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’), recorded live on September 10, 1982 in San Antonio, Texas on the Screaming For Vengeance Tour.

* Includes Judas Priest’s historic 1983 US Festival performance, available for the first time on DVD.

SOUNDGARDEN ‘Down On The Upside’ – This Album Stood By Me, During A Lonely Print Sales Career

SOUNDGARDEN – The fifth studio album and platinum selling Down On The Upside was released back in November of 1996, via A&M Records. Already super fond of Soundgarden, I bought this album (on cassette) back in 1996 and still own it to this day. Last weekend I finally upgraded my ownership of Down On The Upside to CD. I bought it at Super Walmart for $5 (U.S.). Whoa! What took me so long to upgrade this Soundgarden classic? I can’t even answer that question myself. File that question in Stone’s mystery folder and carry on my wayward son.

Back in 1996 I was a traveling printing salesman. Yes, you read that correctly. I need to correct that, I was a traveling printing salesman whore. Why use the word whore? Well, my customers treated me like shit regardless of my stellar customer service; while the various owners I worked for only gave a shit about my contacts and how much money they were worth. As a printing salesman, my self-image was at an all-time low; existing for the sole purpose to make someone else a ton of money, while making corporate print buyers look like winners of the week.

Why have I brought up this part of my past, in the middle of a very cool Soundgarden post? The reason is simple. Down On The Upside got me through (at least) three years of a profession that drained my spirit, while driving around all of New England. I’m serious about that. That Soundgarden cassette was my best friend on many, many lonely drives while being a white-collar punching bag.

I remember once, a jack-ass V.P. of my biggest client bellowing aloud, as I entered the room: “here come’s just another slimy salesman.” What an asshole that guy was. A genuine narcistic scum bag. Nice greeting to start my day, with a customer I essentially sacrificed my soul for. That dumb ass had  an “I’m an ABBA fan” written all over his face every time I saw him as well.

I remember leaving the building of that customer, on that God forsaken day, shaking my head in disgust. Once I started up my Ford Contour, I slapped in my Down On The Upside cassette and cranked up Pretty Noose… then Rhinosaur… then Zero Chance… and Soundgarden had me snickering all the way down the overstuffed highway to hell… or next disloyal customer, if you will.

Believe me, there were many other cassettes in my Contour while I served time as a printing salesman. Too many bands and titles to mention. It’s just that this Soundgarden album kept me afloat and had me realizing that it was Rock ‘N Roll that poured through my veins and soul… and not some stupid ass print-sales career. Whatever Soundgarden did with tweaking their musical nuances on Down On The Upside, they did it with a mystical wand.

From the very first time I heard Soundgarden, I recognized an attitude in their sound that beckoned me to become a fan. Is it Chris Cornell’s vocals? Can it be Kim Thayil’s guitar tones? The totality of Soundgarden’s sound is so unique, I never could even classify them as a “Grunge only” band. Hell no. There’s no question that Soundgarden did originate from the birth place of Grunge and pioneered an entirely new Rock movement. At the end of my Metal day, this band has and always will kick my ass with their hard and heavy Rock style and that’s all that matters to me.

It feels F’n grand to get this (silly) part of my life off of my chest today. No matter how I slice it, I can relate segments and experiences of my life to Rock ‘N Roll… and how it has and will forever save my Rockin’ soul. Thank you Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd and Matt Cameron. Metal be thy name.

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION ‘PEACEMAKER’ – A Paramount Hard & Heavy Rock Album; One You Should Be Required To Own

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Music, rock music, rock music news, southern hard rock, southern rock with tags , , , , , , on August 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION – Everybody get your hands up, I said reach for the sky! Why? Cause Big Dad Ritch says so… that’s why. When Big Dad Ritch aka The King Of Texas sings with his powerful lungs, I’m listening. You better believe it. The album featured here is Peacemaker and the band of outlaws who created it are famously known as Texas Hippie Coalition aka THC. Best you remember that, my Hard Rock and Metal brethren. Best you all do.

Released on Carved Records on August 14th, Peacemaker is without question in my Metal mind, a paramount Hard Rock album. If I could dictate Metal Marshall Law (and that would be very cool) I would make it a requirement that all of the worldwide Hard Rockin’ populace buy and play loud: Peacemaker. That’s it and there would be no F’n way around it either. Big Dad Ritch and his band have added that extra boost of Heavy Rockin’ Texan juju into this sophomore album of theirs and it’s an F’n thrill to experience.

THC is as American as homemade beer. Screw that apple pie crap. THC blends Southern Hard Rock with a classic Hard Rock nod, while brandishing plenty of Heavy Metal aptitude and this band summons the roots of their own Rock and Country Rock influence. THC exemplifies how this genre should be played and delivered into your ears, veins and Rock ‘N Roll soul. If the Southern Hard Rock torch has been handed down, then THC is the band that took such torch with patriotic and Rockin’ pride. I personally couldn’t think of a better band to lead the Southern Hard & Heavy Rock charge for our future generations.

Take a listen and look below to the Turn It Up music video and… TURN IT UP!

From Hands Up to Turn It Up, the level of Hard Rock authority is so stunning that it’s an F’n dreamland of kicking the shit out of your worries, anxieties and fears combined. You will feel personal power from listening to Peacemaker. You don’t need to read any epic Tony Robbins book to get personal power anymore; cause THC will administer it through Peacemaker. Go ahead, tell Tony that Stone said that too.

From Wicked to the title track, the uncompromising heaviness of THC continues to reign. With guitar muscle supplied by Wes Wallace, the leads, rhythm, riffs and mini-solos will leave you begging for mercy… as you continue to hit the replay button. John Exall (bass) and Timmy Braun (drums) provide more heavy Texas thunder than a raging coastal storm heading straight for Corpus Christi. Crash, boom, bang and I’m not fibbing about a damn thang.

Where Big Dad Ritch ignites this album (non-stop) with his prolific vocals; he also brings Peacemaker to a surprisingly softer and momentous closing as he sings… a ballad. With piano keys as an intro, the stage is set for Think Of Me to be that song to make all the gals cry. Man, Big Dad Ritch can croon (still) he sings verses in Think Of Me with his trademark branding iron vocals. Wes Wallace lays down the (Arena Rock style) licks on guitar, while John and Timmy keep the heavy beats raining down on this mid-tempo (heavy) ballad.

Don’t pass up on Peacemaker. This album is just too entertaining and too damn energized with all grand things about Heavy Rock ‘N Roll! THC is a band to reckon with in our Heavy Rock world. It’s like I say to everyone who cares to listen: You either join THC or get the hell out of their way, cause Big Dad Ritch and his band are here to stay. Metal be thy name.

LOVERBOY– With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound and high-energy live shows, LOVERBOY has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques in the USA, including the four-million-selling Get Lucky, and a trio of double-platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s Keep It Up and 1985’s Lovin’ Every Minute of It.

LOVERBOY went on to win a still-record six Juno awards in 1982, and until a three-year sabbatical in 1989, were one of the Top 5 grossing touring acts in the world, performing in over 100 cities across the U.S. and Canada. Their success made them the first Canadian group ever to earn Columbia Records’ exclusive Crystal Glove Award, celebrating the sale of over five million albums outside their native country.

Aside from singer Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean, LOVERBOY still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve (a former member of Dean and Frenette’s pre-LOVERBOY band Streetheart), who replaced the late Scott Smith on bass, and continues a healthy touring schedule around the world.

LOVERBOY is now back once again, having reunited at Bryan Adams’ Vancouver studio The Warehouse, with their original engineer, legendary producer Bob Rock [Metallica, Aerosmith, The Cure, Bon Jovi], who worked under Bruce Fairbairn at the time. The band has recorded three new songs with Rock, HeartbreakerRock ‘N’ Roll Revival and No Tomorrow, which have been added to nine all new re-recordings of the band’s best tracks.

JOE WALSH “Analog Man” – Some Fun & Random Thoughts From Stone (Part Six)

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, guitarists, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Joe Walsh saw his eleventh studio album, Analog Man, released back on June 5th, 2012. Since then, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this album’s songs from top to bottom; so much so, that I’ve written five Fun & Random Thoughts posts regarding this entertaining work. Now, you are reading the sixth such post!

Lyrically, Analog Man is filled with Joe’s real life experiences and Fishbone is one fine example. Fishbone is a funny song, only the story behind this song is not that humorous at all; at least to me it isn’t. Regardless, Joe Walsh has a unique way of turning a scary personal story into something “funny” to reflect upon. Joe Walsh explained the story behind this song in the liner notes of Analog Man. Here’s the story behind Fishbone, as I’ve kept it in fewest words as possible:

Joe’s wife had a fishbone (unfortunately) get stuck in her throat, while at a dinner party in Monte Carlo. She had to fly home to Los Angeles to have the fishbone removed from her throat. That poor woman. That’s scary stuff! I couldn’t imagine having any kind of bone getting stuck in my throat! Based on the lyrics of Fishbone, Joe’s wife obviously had a trying experience and eventual positive outcome. Thank God for that.

____________________________

Fishbone can get nasty, fishbone ain’t your friend – Joe Walsh

Trust me, the lyrics to Fishbone are funny and still I wince while listening to them. I just feel so bad for Joe’s wife having to go through such a terrible ordeal with a fishbone getting stuck in her throat. If this song has taught me any lessons, it’s you can’t take life for granted. Nor can you take life too seriously; especially when an outcome to a frightening experience or event turns out well. I’m sure if the outcome to this story was (gasp) something worse, then Joe Walsh would never have written such a lyrically funny song about it. I would hope so, anyway.

Musically, Fishbone is classic Joe Walsh. Semi-funky and loaded with guitar licks that ooze out from every crevice is Fishbone. Throw in some electronic artfulness on vocals for a second or two and Fishbone is a hidden gem of a song on Analog Man.

____________________________

Since we’re on the topic of Fishbone, here is a (topically related) album I’ve been reminded of:

Yes, that’s Fishbone’s seventh studio album titled: Still Stuck In Your Throat. This cool album was initially released in Europe, back in 2006. The Alt/Rock, Funk Metal and Ska Punk band known as… Fishbone. Whoever said the Rock Music world wasn’t intertwined in some mystical way should have their head examined for malfunction. Metal be thy name.

Wanna See My CHRISTOPHER CROSS Debut S/T Album I Recently Bought? It’s Really Cool…

Posted in adult contemporary rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news, soft rock with tags , , , , , , , on August 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

CHRISTOPHER CROSS

That’s it above! I bought this Christopher Cross album for a whopping 50 cents (U.S.) at a thrift store, at the beginning of this Summer. There is only minimal (normal) wear to the right-hand corners of the album jacket. The vinyl itself looks and sounds like it was never played!

The debut and self-titled album from the legendary Christopher Cross was released on Warner Bros., back in December of 1979. This album has become a beacon, within the pages of Rock Music history. Christopher Cross boasted three Billboard Top 40 songs: Ride Like The Wind, Never Be The Same and Sailing. (Sailing reached #1 status as a single).

Christopher Cross also had won a Grammy Award for Album Of The Year, back in 1981. Here is a Rock history shocker for you: Christopher Cross beat out Pink Floyd’s The Wall for Album Of The Year. Whoa. A Soft Rock performer was chosen over an already proven and justifiably iconic Rock band such as Pink Floyd for that prestigious Grammy, back in ’81. Regardless, I’ve never been a fan of how the Grammy Awards are structured anyways.

If I had to choose one album over the other, I’m choosing The Wall; only this post is about my celebrating Christopher Cross. I like this Christopher Cross album a great deal. This album not only exhibits extremely memorable songs since I first heard them so many years ago; these songs are also timeless for me.

Here is what the back cover of the album jacket looks like:

Take a listen below to Ride Like The Wind, as performed by Christopher Cross; while you listen, keep an ear out for the backing vocals of the legendary Michael McDonald.

Take a listen below to the Hard & Heavy cover version of Ride Like The Wind, performed by the  legendary Jorn. This song is from Jorn’s 2012 studio album, Bring Heavy Rock To The Land, released on Frontiers Records.

If you have listened to both of these versions of Ride Like The Wind, which one do you prefer? I’ll always embrace the original from Christopher Cross, yet, Jorn’s version does psyche the living hell out of me! Metal be thy name, it does.

Here is what the inner sleeve for this Christopher Cross debut S/T album looks like (below). Notice the liner notes and lyrics are printed on it… that’s old school.

Thanks for checking out my Christopher Cross album that I scooped-up on a recent Rock ‘N Metal hunting trip. As always, I’ll continue to post more Rockin’ treasures that I stumble upon!

Rock Steady out there this coming week and remember: “leave a penny, take a penny” at your neighborhood convenience stores.
