BLACKGATES – Featuring Dan Nelson and Paul Bostaph Release 2nd Demo Track

Posted in Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Heavy Metal outfit BLACKGATES featuring Dan Nelson (ex-Anthrax) have just released their second demo song entitled “Break” which can be heard here: http://www.reverbnation.com/blackgates.

BlackGates is a powerful new addition to the Heavy Metal community. This four-piece band consists of veteran Metal drummer Paul Bostaph (Testament/ex-Slayer, Exodus, Forbidden), bassist Uriah Duffy (ex-Whitesnake), guitarist Jeremy Von Epp (The Venting Machine) and vocalist Dan Nelson (ex-Anthrax).

These four musicians came together as BlackGates in late 2009 and began to jam and write original music. The band’s vision from day one was to be an honest band, to re-explore classic elements in Metal that they all felt had been missing for a long time, and to remain as heavy and catchy as humanly possible. BlackGates wrote their first five songs during 2009 and with much enthusiasm, they entered the studio to record a three-song demo in late 2010. Now in 2011, the band is working on a body of music with the goal of signing a record deal with a good label and releasing their debut album by 2012. Let the Metal begin!

Fans can call Dan Nelson via his TheLiveLine phone number and listen to his personal audio blog updates as well as leave him voicemails. http://theliveline.com/DanNelson

Young Denver Thrash battalion, HAVOK, who recently wrapped up a tour supporting Florida Death Metal legends Malevolent Creation, are gearing up for two very special treks. Also joining the tour will be Revocation and White Wizzard.

Commented vocalist/guitarist David Sanchez: “Starting May 3, we’ll be heading out for a west coast run.  Touring the west coast was how we got our start, so it always feels like home. It will be great to return for some head-smashing headline shows. Then in June, we’ll be doing a US/Canada run, coast to coast, with Forbidden, Revocation and White Wizzard! I am so psyched to be touring with all of these great bands!  Forbidden is one of my favorite Thrash Metal bands and I really hope to hear some songs from their first two albums. Revocation is one of my favorite bands to have come out in the last 10 years and they’re all friends of ours, so I’m super pumped to get to hang out with them every night! I anticipate White Wizzard to be epic-as-fuck every night as well. I’m very excited to be a part of this tour because I feel that it will be one of the best Metal packages of the 2011. Metal fans definitely won’t want to miss this tour. VOIVOD – To Release Live Album In The U.S. Via Sonic Unyon Metal

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on April 29, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Sonic Unyon Metal is extremely proud to announce the confirmed upcoming release of a live album from the almighty VOIVOD!

Late in 2009, VOIVOD released their live Tatsumaki DVD, filmed the previous fall when they toured Japan for the first time ever. To celebrate its release of the DVD, VOIVOD performed in front of a sold-out crowd on December 12th, 2009 at Club Soda in their adopted hometown of Montreal, Quebec. It was their first headlining show in the city of Montreal in more than ten years and it was celebrated in grand style. It was a fitting end to a busy year that saw them named Metal Band Of The Year at the 2010 Indie Awards in Canada. The show was recorded for posterity and is now being released as the fifteen-track Warriors Of Ice, the first official VOIVOD live album to feature original band members Denis ‘Snake’ Belanger on vocals and bassist Jean-Yves ‘Blacky’ Theriault, as well as new guitarist Dan “Chewy” Mongrain.

Set for release on June 21, 2011, Warriors Of Ice highlights the classic period of the original VOIVOD lineup as well as a few new songs, all raging with the band’s notorious live energy. Containing songs from their classic albums, spanning from 1984’s War And Pain right up through 1991’s Angel Rat, as well as two songs from their 2009 Infini LP, the album is built of VOIVOD’s signature songs, from “Voivod” and “Nuclear War” to “Tribal Convictions” and “Astronomy Domine.” View the cover art for Warriors Of Ice — designed by drummer Michel Langevin, a.k.a. “Away”.

VOIVOD:

Denis “Snake” Belanger – vocals

Jean-Yves “Blacky” Theriault – bass

Dan “Chewy” Mongrain – guitar

Michel “Away” Langevin – drums

Warriors Of Ice Track Listing:

01. Voivod

02. The Unknown Knows

03. The Prow

04. Ripping Headaches

05. Ravenous Medicine

06. Tribal Convictions

07. Overreaction

08. Panorama

09. Global Warning

10. Treasure Chase

11. Tornado

12. Nothingface

13. Brain Scan

14. Nuclear War

15. Astronomy Domine (Pink Floyd cover)

The 15-track set captured on Warriors Of Ice is undeniably packed with VOIVOD fan favorites, making it an absolute must-have release for diehard fans and a great starting point for the uninitiated as well. This is the main set VOIVOD ravaged their audiences with on their 2010 US tour alongside Kreator, and at their headlining slot at the 2010 Scion Rock Fest.

VOIVOD are currently touring Europe, and will begin to assault the North American masses again this May when they are scheduled as one of the top headliners of the 2011 Maryland Deathfest. Stay tuned for more North American tour dates to be announced in the coming weeks.

KITTIE – BEGIN RECORDING NEW ALBUM!

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 11, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

(New York, NY) — Veteran all-girl Metal outfit KITTIE are headed into the studio next week to begin work on their new, yet to be titled record. What promises to be a grittier record than their previous effort “In the Black,” front woman Morgan Lander offers her own words.

“We have been working exceptionally hard these cold winter months, crafting what is to be our 6th full length release, and our second for eOne.  In some cases these new songs are faster, darker and much more sinister than our previous release. It contains some of the most difficult and personal subject matter I have had the pleasure (or displeasure) of writing.”

Once again the band will enlist the producing talent of Siegfried “Siggy” Meier at Beach Road Studios in Goderich Ontario, Canada. “The girls have written some incredible and personal songs this time around. They’re heavy as shit and relentless.  It’s a pleasure and an honor to be doing another record with one of the best Metal bands of our time,” says Meier. The new record will be released later this summer.

KITTIE released “In the Black” in 2009 to critical acclaim, “Kittie’s fifth record sees the gals back in heavier form, with Morgan’s much-improved clean vocals soaring alongside mountain-sized riffage.” says Revolver Magazine. Blabbermouth.net even hailed the record as the “biggest Metal shock of the year.” The girls spent the next two years on successful tours with acts like DEVILDRIVER, ICP and last year’s THRASH AND BURN Tour.

KITTIE is: Morgan Lander (guitar), Mercedes Lander (drums), Tara McLeod (guitar) and Ivy Vujic (bass).

Named in tribute to Surtur, leader of the fire giants of Muspelheim (“flame land”) and the oldest being in the nine worlds of Norse mythology, the record was recorded, mixed and mastered at Fascination Street Studios Örebro, Sweden with Jens Bogren and bears the striking cover art by Tom Thiel.

The mammoth long-player has been reaping incredible praise from critics nationwide. In a 9/10 review, Blabbermouth compared Surtur Rising to being,  “…bludgeoned by your favorite warhammer. Definitely a contender for this year’s best.” Fearnet called it a, “feast of world-destroying metal on par with the band’s career-defining 2008 release Twilight Of The Thunder God,” while Decibel Magazine commended the band noting, “it’s a pleasure to learn one of metal’s most consistent bands remains as indefatigable as ever.” Pop Matters called the record “…another momentous album for AMON AMARTH, leaving no doubt that they are one of the best Metal bands in the world!,” and Live-Metal agreed: “…one of the strongest, most massively heavy Death Metal bands around…”

SCOTT COLUMBUS – Numerous reports have been made, from credible sources such as the official website for MANOWAR, stating the sad news of Scott Columbus (ex-member/drummer for MANOWAR) passing away on Monday, April 4th, 2011. Scott Columbus was 54 years old. Metal Odyssey extends condolences to the family, friends, ex-band mates and fans of Scott Columbus.

As it is stated on the official website of MANOWAR:

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our brother Scott Columbus. Scott Columbus was a rare talent and equally a rare individual. He was a father, a friend and a brother of metal. All of the great moments we spent together in the studio, in our homes and on the road are burnished in our hearts and memories forever. These words are spoken with heavy hearts but we have the comfort of knowing that he is in a good place and at peace. He will never be forgotten. Your family and brothers, Joey, Eric, Karl, Donnie and all at Magic Circle Music”.

My thoughts are: As the past few years (and time) have proven, our Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal heros can never be taken for granted. I am shocked at this news of Scott Columbus passing away and certainly I am not alone. Such a talented drummer that I and countless fans worldwide enjoyed listening to and watching. May Scott Columbus rest in peace.  – Stone

Norwegian black metallers VREID today release their fifth studio album, simply entitled V, in North America via Indie Recordings. Issued to European territories in February, the nine-track offering was produced by bassist/songwriter Hváll at his own 1184 Studio and has already received a positive response from European press, earning a perfect 6/6 rating in Scream Magazine in Norway and an 8/10 in Terrorizer who called the record VREID’s “most accomplished work to date.”

V Track Listing:

01. Arche

02. The Blood Eagle

03. Wolverine Bastards

04. The Sound Of The River

05. Fire On The Mountain

06. The Others & The Look

07. Slave

08. Welcome To The Asylum

09. Then We Die

Check out the video for “The Sound Of The River”, filmed in Wroclaw, Poland by Grupa 13 (Behemoth, Amon Amarth) Just click this link

The song is reportedly inspired by the book Markens Grøde/Growth Of The Soil by Knut Hamsun (a book which earned the legendary and controversial Norwegian author a Nobel prize in literature in 1920).

ABOUT VREID:

VREID, Norwegian for “wrath,” arose from the ashes of Windir, following the tragic death of Valfar in January 2004. At the time the band consisted of Windir members Hváll (bass), Steingrim (drums), Sture (vocals/guitar) and new guitarist/longtime friend, Ese. This lineup went on to release four albums and one DVD.

Between 2004 -2006 VREID released two full-lengths on Tabu Recordings: Kraft and Pitch Black Brigade. The music was a natural continuance of the music Hváll wrote with Windir, with a new twist — the ambiance of Windir and rawness of Norwegian black metal meshed with the rocking groove of Sepultura, Metallica and Motörhead. The lyrics were in both English and Norwegian, and heavily influenced by historical themes.

By 2006 VREID signed to then-new imprint Indie Records. Their third album, I Krig (Norwegian for “at war”), was released in May 2007. All the lyrics were based on poems from 1946 by Gunnar Reiss-Andersen, a member of the Norwegian resistance fighters during WW2. In 2009 they released Milorg. With English lyrics, the album once again dealt with the resistance movement’s work in Norway during WW2. The album received rave reviews and is VREID’s greatest success to date.

Since then, the band has been on a long-lasting path of progression and success. Their European headlining tour with Kampar and Iskald (on which they played Milorg in it’s entirety almost every night) was nearly sold out everywhere. They also did an extensive tour with Pestilence as special guests on their comeback tour. In April 2009 VREID performed on the main stage of the Inferno fest. Their set included pyro, movie screens and guest performances to illustrate the themes from their last album. This show is the backbone for their first ever DVD, Vreid Goddamnit that was released in September 2010. In the summer of that same year, VREID found themselves playing some of their most monumental shows ever on the main stages of mammoth festivals like Wacken Open Air, Summer Breeze, Brutal Assault, Oslo Live and Zwarte Cross. For the US release in October 2009, they did the Heathen Fest with Eluveitie and Belphegor which took them to 29 cities in 31 days.

VREID spent 2010 playing select festivals and shows, with their main focus on writing V. Build upon Norwegian blackness and ’70s rock, on V, the Norwegian black ‘n’ rollers are reunited with guitar maestro Strom from Windir and Ulcus days (former guitarist Ese fled the band late 2009). With history as the lifeline of their lyrics, V focuses its thoughts on Hamsun, Munch and Sarte and is clearly bears some of their heaviest and most complex songs ever recorded. VREID have marched across the world performing over 200 shows since their start back in 2004, and will be hitting the road 2011. Further details to be announced in due time.

Released on February 22nd via Southern Lord Recordings, Angels Of Darkness, Demons Of Light 1 represents yet another new chapter in the EARTH lineage, as the band continues to expand their trademark slow-morphing drone a bit beyond the realms they’ve explored on their last handful of releases and recent years of touring, and continuing to reproduce continually inspiring music as they have with every recording to date.

“…unlike most heavy-music acts it changed over time as human beings actually do. Its music became lighter and clearer and wiser; it started having more to do with Indian music and La Monte Young and Miles Davis’s ‘In a Silent Way.’” – The New York Times

“As Earth developed its heavy instrumental vision in the past six years, subtle deviation has been crucial to the band’s renewal. Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light 1  is the latest installment in that trajectory, adding a cello, desert blues and British folk-rock motifs to Earth’s slow-moving Americana.” – NPR
