SPEEDPIG – Hog Roast In Hell: This Metal EP Is On Fire!

SPEEDPIG – They’re raw. They’re Metal. They’re Stoner Metal. They’re a bit traditional with their Metal style. They’re underground… and they’re undisputedly on fire! SPEEDPIG is a ‘two man Stoner Metal tour-de-force’ as they call themselves on their website. Gaz and Mungo are their names. Bridgend, South Wales is where this diy Stoner Metal duo calls home and they are looking to invade all shores with their terrificly memorable EP aptly titled: Hog Roast In Hell. Yes, these two lads from the other side of the Atlantic can play some Metal and it sounds like they have a monumental ton of fun with it along the way.

Having SPEEDPIG cross my Metal path is reassuring in a way, that not all bands these days are trying to make a statement as to how clever they really are with “concept albums” or (enough already) deeply enriched themes taken from “reality”. Instead, Gaz and Mungo have created some Metal that you can crank the hell up after you’ve just called in sick and ordered pizza for breakfast. This is Metal you can crank up in the open field with a bonfire and keg of beers aplenty.

You don’t need a Berkley School of Music degree to understand that Metal needs to return to the days when songs were memorable and not boastfully epic length. Making songs that inevitably will have Metalheads playing loud should be the rule and not the exception. SPEEDPIG gets this. I advice my fellow Metalheads to play Hog Roast In Hell very loud, um, Metal be thy name.

This SPEEDPIG EP keeps a constant fired up tempo, while delivering a vibe & soul that is old school denim and leather. Hog Roast In Hell is all about the riff baby… and plenty of impressive shredding abounds too. The vocals of Gaz are a refreshing experience, one that reminds me of maybe how the late and legendary Bon Scott would sound if he decided to go hell-bent for leather on some smokin’ Stoner Metal.

I’ve enjoyed what SPEEDPIG has delivered with Hog Roast In Hell and look forward to their future Metal output. SPEEDPIG qualifies as a candidate for not only Stoner Metal fans to get into, Traditional Metal and Metal fans should find this talented duo just as bad-ass too. Get into the pig now, so you can tell all your friends down the Metal road that you were there when this Hog Roast In Hell started burning up!

9 CHAMBERS – Debut S/T: Pump Up The Volume On This Hard Rock Stunner!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, modern rock, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on September 9, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Greg Hampton (vocals, guitar & producer) and Ed Mundell (guitar) have joined Rockin’ forces to create 9 Chambers, recruiting Jorgen Carlsson (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) to seal the deal on this Hard Rock titan of a band. These musicians have seemed to set aside their past accolades and industry status, while instead they ventured to use their Rockin’ talents like hungry musicians looking to make their mark for the very first time. This 9 Chambers debut is fourteen songs that are memorable and relevant, with quality and consistency being their Hard Rock standard.

I look upon this 9 Chambers album for its several strengths that it bestows: songwriting, lyrics, musicianship and the uncanny accomplishment of intertwining a wealth of sounds representing a palette of genres, from Stoner to Modern, which in turn all lends this album its strong and unique character. With that said, the one constant on 9 Chambers is it being a Hard Rock experienceBury Yourself has the psychedelic vibe happening with a hardened and modern edge. If you’re looking for a song to Rock your face off, this is the one. Can’t Turn Your Back is a mid-tempo Rocker that showcases 9 Chambers as a band that can deliver the Hard Rock goods on both a heavy and laid back level. A ballad with muscle is another way to describe this cool song.

My favorite song on this album is All But Done. I had to pick that one song that has absolutely Rocked my boring and rain-soaked world, rescuing me from a post Hurricane Irene syndrome. Greg’s vocals, coupled with the insane guitar chops and thumping rhythmic beats, so solidly accentuates the totality of coolness that All But Done resonates. It’s a thrill a second, while I listen to the duo guitars of Greg and Ed throughout this album. As they swap leads, riffs and solos, the Rockin’ vibes are felt from two guitarists that believe in the music they are playing and come across as believing in each other. Ed has obviously adapted to his post Monster Magnet life, capturing some axe slinging juju in a bottle and calling it his own.

I was impressed before on the multi-instrumental and vocal talents of Greg Hampton. His last band called The New Czars, released a Modern/Industrial Hard Rock statement I’ll forever admire known as Doomsday Revolution. This time around, I’m more impressed with what Greg Hampton has achieved on all levels, with his vocals sounding notably more confident (kick ass) and relaxed while fronting 9 Chambers. Greg is a singer that knows his limits, he has a classic voice that can adapt to the multi-genres of Rock that 9 Chambers taps into.

Greg vocally exhibits the skillful ability to carry a heavy song. Indeed The Sun is a shining moment for Greg vocally and I can’t resist getting psyched out while listening to this song. Indeed The Sun has everything going for it, with abundant guitar licks and a fired-up rhythm section as well. Harmonious and modern tones appear to come very natural for Greg and Use U Up exemplifies my point. Mid-paced and resonating with an AOR vibe, Use U Up can be a candidate for Rock radio in my Metal opinion. I’ll leave vocal comparisons aside, saying that as a vocalist on this album Greg has once again: reached up high and pulled the sun from the sky.

Vinny Appice is always a delight to listen to on drums. With Jorgen Carlsson on bass this is as accomplished a rhythm section as you’re going to hear in Hard Rock or Rock. Darker Side Of Sunshine accentuates the musical strengths that Vinny and Jorgen bring to 9 Chambers. A justifiably Heavy, Modern Rock song that jams so steadily along. It’s one of those songs I wish would carry on for twenty minutes, it’s that Rockin’ delicious. To create an album of Hard Rock songs and make it sound so incredibly complete is quite an admirable accomplishment of 9 Chambers. I give a Metal salute to the songwriting prowess of Greg and Ed, creating Hard Rock this damn cool is sincerely something else.

9 Chambers has successfully executed their Hard Rock edict with their debut album. Hard Rock fans of any generation should get into the Hard Rockin’ world of 9 Chambers now and escape away from the cut and paste albums that you may find coming at you. Classes for Hard Rock Appreciation 101 begins the moment you listen to this album. 9 Chambers is a Hard Rock album that I easily rank as one of the years best and hopefully the first of many more to come from this dynamic band.

I’ll ring that Metal bell, raise my fists to the air and blow an F’n kiss to the sky. Why?  For 9 Chambers is a band and album I can’t possibly deny. Metal be thy name.

9 Chambers releases on September 27th, 2011, on Samson Records/E1 Entertainment.

Premonition 13 – Debut Album Featuring Scott “Wino” Weinrich & Jim Karow: Releases Today!

PREMONITION 13 – Some, if few, Rock Music legends have redefined the word perseverance and combined it with greatness. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Scott “Wino” Weinrich is one of those select few. An underground Heavy Music, Stoner and Doom Metal icon for decades, (The Obsessed, St. Vitus, Spirit Caravan), Wino is on a mission to spread his musical message among both lifelong fans and throngs of new disciples in 2011. Wino’s newest project and debut/self-titled album – Premonition 13, is being released today, July 26th, on Volcom Entertainment.

There are scores of new album releases each week, only there are few creme’ de la creme’s such as Premonition 13 to choose from. Don’t pass up a golden Metal opportunity, to purchase a Heavy Music album of substance, such as Premonition 13. You must hear Wino, a living legend of Heavy Rock Music, a pioneer of Doom Metal, performing at one of his finest hours yet.

Let your ears absorb such molasses heavy tracks as Modern Man and Peyote Road and then become aware, of how a project as Premonition 13 will one day be deemed a classic. Each song on Premonition 13 carries it’s own weight in Heavy Music integrity. Could any less be expected from an album that Wino touches? This is an album that’s absolute in it’s credible message of: strong songwriting combined with an all encompassing heaviness can both inspire and blow your mind away. Premonition 13 is an album that will surely compete mightily, for it’s rightful place on Metal Odyssey’s Best Of lists for 2011.

* Background info on Premonition 13: Wino pairs up with an old friend from The Obsessed days – Jim Karow. The two bonded over jam sessions and discussions on Mesoamerican culture and magnetism. Speaking of magnets, this album makes heavy use of the E-Bow (a handheld guitar effect that uses an electromagnet field to sustain notes).

SLEEP – Stoner Metal Legends Announce 2011 Live Dates!

Posted in concerts, doom metal, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Following the successful Marijuanaut’s Return tour of September 2010, West Coast Stoner Metal legends SLEEP recently announced three North American dates for 2011. The mini run of dates will include New York City on June 22, Los Angeles on June 26 and an appearance at the Sled Island Music & Arts Festival in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 24.

SLEEP 2011 Tour Dates:

6/22/2011 Terminal 5 – New York, NY

6/24/2011 Sled Island Festival – Calgary, AB, Canada

6/26/2011 The Wiltern –  Los Angeles, CA

Said Noisecreep of the band’s last live excursion: “…if the band put any more stacks on the stage, it just might have collapsed.” Rolling Stone Brazil gave the band’s performance a perfect 5 out of 5 rating while Redefine Magazine noted: “SLEEP, despite being broken up for over ten years, seemed like they hadn’t missed a beat — and Holy Mountain never sounded so good in the process. This was the definitive show of the weekend, if not the definitive show of my year.”

Check out live footage of the band’s Denver show last year HERE.

About SLEEP:

SLEEP split in 1997 after two hugely influential albums. Members went on to form OM and High On Fire. Original members Al Cisneros and Matt Pike were joined by drummer Jason Roeder of Neurosis last Fall for a short stint of reunion dates that floored their earliest fans and converted new ones.

The band debuted with 1991’s Volume One album, recorded for San Francisco label Tupelo. Earache Records received the band’s next recordings in the mail as a demo. The label — impressed by SLEEP‘s single-mindedness and unique vision — immediately signed the band and released the tape exactly as it was received. Record stores worldwide have stocked SLEEP’s Holy Mountain from November 1992 to this day.

The band then signed to London Records. Their debut album for the major took the form of one mammoth 63-minute leviathan of a track entitled “Jerusalem.” They resisted the label’s attempts at radio edits and bringing in their own engineer to remix the album in view of “marketability.” London balked at the prospect of promoting what probably still is the most extreme music ever recorded for a major label, consequentially shelving the record and dropping the band.

In addition, SLEEP‘s music has been featured in films by Harmony Korine and Jim Jarmusch.

Legendary alternative Metal band HELMET will perform their 1992 platinum-selling release of Meantime in its entirety. The Interscope Records release gave the band mainstream attention with songs like “Unsung” and “In The Meantime”.  With the band’s renewed success after getting back together in 2004, this tour will be one of the most anticipated of 2011.

One of the most highly influential Doom Metal bands in America, SAINT VITUS are regarded as one of the first bands of the genre starting out as early as the 1970’s. The band featuring Scott “Wino” Weinrich, bassist Mark Adams, guitarist Dave Chandler and drummer Henry Vasquez have influenced so many bands in Doom and Metal . “Saint Vitus is more than ready to infect The Metalliance Tour! We’ve been wanting to do something like this for some time now…so prepare for destruction!!” says lead guitarist Dave Chandler. The band has done a handful of shows and some European Festivals but this will be their first full US tour in over a decade.

CROWBAR front man Kirk Windstein concludes, “Wow! This tour is gonna rule! I’ve loved Helmet since the beginning and loved St. Vitus even longer. With the new Crowbar record having hit the streets by then, look out! This bill will bring just what we need to crush each city with an avalanche of stylistic thunder!”

Earthride “Something Wicked” – A Crunching Doom Metal Ride!

Posted in doom metal music, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal music with tags , , , , , , , , on November 26, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

EARTHRIDE – Doom Metal, Biker Doom Metal and to a Metal degree Stoner Metal. This is Earthride. Let me tell you this much, if you are looking to take that gritty and bad-ass Metal ride you’ve been hankering for, look no further than this Maryland based band for just that. With more than enough mainstream dime-a-dozens getting all the attention from the Rock “scholar” mags, it’s a full-throttle, Doom pedal to the Metal band, like Earthride, that gets their proper Metal due here on Metal Odyssey.

Something Wicked is the third full-length album from Earthride and it’s exceedingly muscular in all of it’s Doom Metal glory, with Stoner riffs galore. If this album was actually alive and breathing, I would want it to be my personal body guard. Woven with blue collar toughness and plenty of underground thump and stump Metal, Earthride succeeds with their own Metal stamp of originality, combined with song quality. Plus, the production gives way to a raw appeal with just enough polish, to make Something Wicked sound so menacingly strong.

Ozzy Osbourne era Black Sabbath fans and Doom Metal aficionado’s should be thankful, that a band like Earthride is crunching out Metal as heard on Something Wicked. Earthride could very easily have named their new album Earthshaker… due to the Earth pounding bass courtesy of Rob Hampshire. Vocalist Dave Sherman sounds like a crusty combination of Lemmy Kilmister and Billy Gibbons, while still coming across as a damn cool original. Then again, after enough listens of what Earthride is playing here, the Motorhead and ZZ Top influence arguably exists musically… in my Metal opinion.

The opening track, Something Wicked (I May Become) lays down the Metal ground rules as to what Earthride is bringing to the party… some seriously Heavy, thick and trudging songs that have Old School guitar leads and solos intertwined within. This is a band and an album that solidifies the “what you hear is what you get” Metal school of thought. Don’t expect any experimentation or that one song that will throw you off guard, this is Earthride and they are aren’t about to cater to the diverse Metal enthusiasts anytime soon.

Amidst all the Doom and Stoner appealing riffs, there is some southern boogie in Earthrides step too. Force Fed Fear plays out at 8:31 long and is admittedly my favorite song on Something Wicked. Kyle VanSteinburg lends the boogie down riffs on this molasses heavy kicker of a song, while also providing a meat and potatoes solo that burns. Force Fed Fear is a mighty way to cap off this album.

Metal be thy name, I give Something Wicked 8 out of 10 Metal Fists.

HULL To Open For Pentagram In NY This January 2011!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal bands, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, sludge metal music, stoner metal music with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 19, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

Brooklyn, New York-based triple guitar-led sludge titans HULL are pleased to announce their appearance on a very special show this January opening for doom icons Pentagram. The performance will take place at Brooklyn’s Club Europa on January 6, 2011. Additional support will come from  Judas Priestess and Bezoar. To purchase tickets, visit: http://www.ticketweb.com/t3/sale/SaleEventDetail?dispatch=loadSelectionData&eventId=3318815

Commented the band : “This year being the first of the future, twenty-ten, it marks the starting point of a whole new century of sonic learning that we can’t even begin to imagine. Twenty-eleven has been foretold to perhaps even melt the faces of those who aren’t listening to the learning. The first of these twelve or seventy-three different events to mark the future will fall upon the sixth day of twenty-eleven at eight of the clock, when the bare moon is halved and then thrice cloven, thus appearing to be full.

For those who would stand proud and open their ears to this gift, it is said it may be witnessed on the continent of Europa during the season of the Pentagram, when the Judas Priestess battles the mighty Bezoar they pilot an oaken Hull through Hell…  Citizens! Come! Look into the bright light of the future and hear the words of the universe!

…and after having shared the stage with Pentagram at Planet Caravan Festival in Asheville, NC in 2009, HULL is very excited to experience the unpredictability of the infamous Mr. Bobby Liebling once again. Hopefully fans may even get a glimpse of his doppelganger, Sir Greg Peterson of Batillus fame.”

TWEAK BIRD – Self Titled Album Is Eclectic And Heavy!

TWEAK BIRD – Brothers Ashton and Caleb Bird have rode into town from Southern Illinois, with their self-titled, eclectically fused and heavy, full length album. Released on August 31, 2010, on Volcom EntertainmentTweak Bird is the follow-up to this bands 7 song EP, Reservations from 2008. From the looks of the album cover, Ashton and Caleb seem to be pretty psyched out about things… as well they should be, since Tweak Bird were invited as an opening act for the Progressively Alternative legends known as Tool this past Summer of 2010. Your music must be striking a heavy nerve and be interesting plus different enough for Maynard James Keenan to take such a prominent notice.

Well, I’ve taken notice of Tweak Bird too. Yes, I’m no Maynard James Keenan, still I have learned long ago that when you play from the heart and don’t follow the leader with your Heavy Rock sound, a band is going to stand out from the sea of clones. Tweak Bird has seemed to navigate themselves through this sea of clones and gathered up their Rock influences to make a menagerie of sound that is both Heavy and semi-Progressive. With a sprinkle of Alternative ambiance that seems to peer through the cracks of Tweak Birds’s sound, it’s still the Heavy Stoner riffs and chunkiness of Caleb’s baritone guitar that commands their sound.

There are moments, while I listen to Tweak Bird, that I feel I’m hearing The Sword in a slightly tempered down groove. Then, the vocal harmonies of Ashton and Caleb seem to combine for what makes this album stand apart from being just another Heavy assemblage of songs. The comparison likeness, no matter how subtle, to that of the great Geddy Lee, is not an out of the realm statement to make when mentioning the vocals of these two brothers.

One moment where Tweak Bird’s music gets diverse, Alternative if you will, is on the song A Sun/Ahh Ahh, where an extended saxophone solo by John McCowan, (who is referred to as “sometimes third band member” in a Volcom Entertainment press release), comes into play at around the two-minute mark of this song that runs 4:13. The overlapping and intermittent vocal ahh’s over the saxophone lends to an almost eerie feel… and I dig it. “A Sun/Ahh Ahh” comes to a close with the saxophone solo and fittingly makes sense.

Flute anyone? Tweak Bird incorporates the flute into Flyin’ High”. This song simultaneously breathes a slow tempo while Caleb plays the thickest and heaviest Stoner riffs that makes me bang my head in slow motion. It can be done… slow motion headbanging… Tweak Bird taught me how. As with the saxophone, Tweak Bird makes the flute fit right into their Heavy motives, almost in a hallucinating sort of way. Cool.

The last song on Tweak Bird, Distant Airways”, is the longest as well. Six songs clock in under 3 minutes, two songs under 2 minutes and one song barely over 4 minutes long. “Distant Airways” plays out at 6:15 long and doesn’t bore the senses as a useless and redundant epic either. The good ol’ saxophone makes its appearance once again on “Distant Airways”, giving these sax moments I hear a smoky lounge vibe that borders on the ultra cool. Hey… I have stated that Tweak Bird has shunned away the “clone syndrome” of Heavy Music and this song exemplifies this statement with ease. Distant Airways comes to a synthetic close with what sounds like a UFO taking off from some god forsaken crop field. A bona-fide Progressive moment. Cool again.

“Tunneling Through” showcases Ashton Bird hitting the drums hard (as he has been quoted: his hitting the drums hard being the “trick” in making his drums “sound good”). To me, Ashton’s drumming does sound good… and yes, it does sound like he hits the drums damn hard too. “Tunneling Through” gives way to a victorious feeling of “opening your mind” and journeying into the unknown. A tad psychedelic in it’s lyrical content? Sure thing. These lyrics married with the Stoner riffs and Heavy crunch, gives me that early 70’s Blue Cheer slap to my forehead. I point out this song as being my personal favorite from Tweak Bird.

Tweak Bird opens the album with The Future”, a song that has proved to me that Psychedelic Heavy Metal does exist, especially when this type of cool experimentation occurs. “The Future” has a memorable and steady beat that is not short on the Heavy side of Tweak Birds’s bag of cool & Rockin’ tricks. “The Future” ends with lots of fuzzy distortion that might have me borrowing my daughters lava lamp very soon. The shortest song from Tweak Bird is Round Trippin'”, playing at 1:12. The UFO’s have come to land! One listen to “Round Trippin'” and you’ll know what I mean there. This synth laced instrumental, puts an exclamation point on my tagging Tweak Bird as indeed… semi- Progressive.

Beyond is a track that takes the classic vibe of Surf Rock and beams it down into 2010… and is played the Tweak Bird way. Maybe the resurgence of Hawaii Five-O has some credibility after all. This song would make for a fabulous addition to this revamped television series soundtrack. Am I being a wise guy here? Nope. Beyond has all the feel and sound of modern day “Surfin’ USA”, only without the teeny-bop lyrics of actual… surfing. Cool.

The “Pop” or commercial accessibility of Tweak Bird’s songs sound non-contrived and it works well within the parameters of Heaviness that they pound away with. Caleb is an admitted T-Rex fan and loves Marc Bolan’s songwriting technique, thus the underlying reasoning behind a Classic Rock “Pop” characteristic, swirled within Tweak Bird’s overall sound. Clearly, Tweak Bird is a Heavy Band when it’s all said and done. Ashton and Caleb just mix it up by implementing the saxophone and flute within their Heavy Music playbook, showing that taking chances in Rock Music can make a comeback in 2010.

Do I like Tweak Bird? I sure do. I admire their making an album that is not generic. Knowing they are a Heavy Band is just the beginning… one must listen to each song and hear for themselves that the “unexpected” is just as cool as the “expected”. The one constant throughout the songs heard on Tweak Bird, is that you will hear Ashton and Caleb both playing Heavy… regardless if there are those intermittent moments of stylistic changes, the Heavy always returns.

Any multi-faceted, Rock Music nut should have a field day listening to Tweak Bird. Heavy Music fans that want a slice of Alternative cake, with their search for up and coming bands, might get exactly what they have been looking for with Tweak Bird. After listening to Tweak Bird several times, my use of the word “cool” has heightened… and I’m going for another slice of that Alternative cake. Cool.

HIGH ON FIRE “FROST HAMMER” – A METAL SONG FOR THE METAL AGES

HIGH ON FIRE – Good health. Family. Cool Metal buddies. Sunny skies. Free stuff. Cold beer. Finding an independent record and CD store. Finding a quarter in the grocery store parking lot. Taking a relieving dump. Sure, these are all the big and some little things that can perk up the human spirit. However… it’s Metal that never fails to perk me up time and again, year after year, day after day.

Hearing that one Metal song that lifts me up is always a reminder as to why I am hooked on the greatest music in the history of mankind. What’s the greatest music in the history of mankind you query? Uh, it’s Metal. This is Metal Odyssey after all, that you are visiting. Sure, there are other Rock genres covered on Metal Odyssey… only Metal is the end all and be all. Metal be thy F’n name.

I’ll get to the Metal point here: Frost Hammer from the High On Fire album Snakes For The Divine – kicks some serious Metal ass. Frost Hammer is an instant adrenaline surge for me. Whoa… I’ve been Metal supercharged by High On Fire. A charging pissed off beast, out of the dark northern woods of no man’s land is Frost Hammer. Des Kensel on drums plays with enough fierce enthusiasm, with so many cool fills, that it’s mind numbing. Lead vocalist and guitarist Matt Pike leads the way with his nailed to the Metal riffs, leads and a solo so fast and tenaciously addicting that it smacks me senseless.

The triple Metal threat of Matt Pike, Des Kensel and Jeff Matz are as potent as any power trio I’ve ever listened to. For me to state otherwise, would be untruthful. On Frost Hammer these guys play tight, no, super tight, defining what “in-your-face” Metal is supposed to sound like. Frost Hammer is one of those great Metal songs, where I wish it would continue on for another five or ten minutes. Nonetheless, this song will always sound like an epic to me. High On Fire didn’t rewrite any sacred Metal rules with Frost Hammer… they just stayed true to ’em.

With speed and heavy coexisting so deliriously well on Frost Hammer, there is no moment to really catch your breath. This is not even a Thrash Metal song, yet it rivals the fierce and bombastic tempo of such. Just hearing Matt Pike bellow out – “Frost Hammer”! is enough to make me feel secure in my own little Metal world, which I love to get lost in continuously.

High On Fire doesn’t make Metal that’s fashionable, they make Metal that kicks ass… period.
