As I have expressed on both Metal Odyssey and twitter during the past month of January, my family and I have relocated to Ohio. Ohio ROCKS. I’m not just saying that cause I’ve been living here in a hotel for about 8 days now; in fact, every person I’ve met in this grand state thus far is downright friendly. Stone digs that. Meeting new people and experiencing new places is what life is all about. Metal be thy name and ring that relocation bell!
Within these next 24 hours, our official status of becoming residents of Ohio will be solidified; as we move into our new home. With a new home comes (the possibility of) no immediate internet access; resulting in a temporary burp in Metal coverage you are used to reading and seeing on Metal Odyssey. Have no fear, I have purposely scheduled some (very cool) posts that will run through the third week of February (just in case the internet is not installed/delivered to our residence in a timely fashion). I truly hope you dig what I’ve got in store for you with these Rockin’ posts too!

By now you must be asking: Stone, why is that album cover for Motörhead The Wörld Is Ours – Vol 2: AnyplaceCrazy, As Anywhere Elseat the top of this post? I answer: this CD is one of the first I’ve purchased while living here in Ohio. I found this Motörhead CD at Best Buy. Plus, I couldn’t resist tying in the title of this double live Motörhead album with this post. Anyplace Crazy, As Anywhere Else… that’s what relocation is all about. Nuff’ said.
There are so many little and big things to accomplish when you relocate! My Metal head is spinning! No, I’m not kidding! Okay, after that crybaby outburst, I want to thank each and every visitor (both casual and loyal) to Metal Odyssey for understanding there may be a lapse in normal action in the coming days. Hopefully the internet arrives to our new home quickly and I can breathe a sigh of relief! In the meantime… keep on Rockin’ with no sign of stoppin’!

Long Island-based Heavy Metal powerhouse MAELSTROM has issued an update regarding the enormous reception received by the Halloween 2012 digital reissue of their critically acclaimed EP, It Was Predestined. Widely-praised by critics across the globe in 2009, when the EP was originally self-released, and again last year when Itchy Metal Entertainment(IME) offered the release to Metal fans worldwide, It Was Predestined exploded onto the CMJ Loud Rock charts this month. MAELSTROM vocalist Gary Vosganian had this to say about the accomplishment:
“It is with great pride that I can say – MaelstroM has hit the US radio charts with our EP It Was Predestined – debuting at #20 on the Nationwide CMJ Loud Rock charts and as the 4th most added album in the country. Thank you to all that have helped and have been fans since the start and congrats to my partner in this effort the true guitar virtuoso Mr. Joey Lodes. Our label partners Itchy Metal Entertainment our PR group ClawHammer PR and of course our radio promoter Munsey Ricci and Skateboard Marketing Ltd. without whom this would have never happened, and of course all the fantastic Djs that are supporting us with their spins – it is sincerely appreciated. There is much work to be done as guitar tracking for the balance of the album has begun this week. But I will take a little time to really absorb the news about CMJ and celebrate this victory! Thanks again to all the fans who have stuck by MaelstroM, your unwavering support has been amazing. Keep it Heavy!”
As Vosganian stated, the band is currently at work on new material for the follow-up to It Was Predestined. Details on the next release will be announced as they come. Stay tuned!
It Was Predestined is available at http://www.itchymetal.com. Famed music journalist Martin Popoff called the release “A symphony of progressiveness the likes of which has pretty much never been articulated, invented, or heard, before now,” and world-renowned publications such as Terrorizer, Metal Hammer and MetalSucks.net all sang MAELSTROM’s praises upon the EP’s release.

BAND FEATURES D.R.I. SINGER KURT BRECHT WITH MEMBERS OF DEAD HORSE
__________________________________________
San Francisco – Pasadena Napalm Division, the Houston-based Thrash Metal outfit that features D.R.I. singer Kurt Brecht and members of Dead Horse, will release their self-titled debut on April 9th via MinusHead Records.
“Fans of D.R.I. and Deadhorse will rejoice. PND is what Thrash Metal should sound like in 2013,” said Brecht. “Working together with some of the members of Texas-based cult band, Deadhorse, we have come up with some hard-hitting tunes that span genres and will withstand the test of time. I can’t wait to take the Pasadena Napalm Division machine on the road in support of our first LP on Minus Head Records.”
Pasadena Napalm Division is Kurt Brecht (vocals), Greg Martin (guitar), Scott Sevall (guitar/vocals), Ronnie Guyote (drums) and Bubba (bass/vocals).
The 13-song self-titled release was recorded at the Music Lab in Austin and features guest vocals from Tony Foresta (Municipal Waste) and Argo (Dead Horse).
Following his debut solo album, as well as a collaborative LP with Doom legend Scott “Wino” Weinrich, German singer/songwriter CONNY OCHS is now gearing up to release his second solo studio full-length, BlackHappy, once again via Exile On Mainstream. Having produced music for over a decade, local fans have endorsed and worshiped the man’s efforts for years. Yet, it was OCHS’ album co-written with Wino and the heavy touring across Europe and North America in support of the record that put him on the international map.
This leads into this new album Black Happy, the title an absolute indication to the atmospheres CONNY OCHS is able to create. Deeply rooted in the blackened parts of the human soul he carves a mixture of melancholy and catharsis into the rough edges of songs that come out so natural, so organic and sonically sparkling. While keeping his approach pure to the heart and the creation limited to just him and his guitar, OCHS reaches a stark authenticity that can only be worshipped. It draws you in, makes you a part of the music and leads to a deep admiration of the tunes, the pain and beauty relatable to everybody who hears them.
Bound to a tradition and history of great acoustic craftsmanship drawn from but not limited to the American continent, CONNY explores the realms of what of your inner self can sonically portray once you are on your own and armed with a guitar and voice. The path has been walked by many before, but that doesn’t make it a worn-out road.
Just like his previous solo album Raw Love Songs and the Heavy Kingdom album with Wino, Black Happy was engineered, mixed and mastered by Thommy Krawallo in Berlin in pure analog fashion. The album is set for official release in Germany on March 1st, throughout the rest of Europe on March 4th, and in North America on April 2nd, on LP, via digital download, and limited wooden box CD. Preorders are available here.
CONNY OCHS is currently embarked on a European tour in advance of the album’s release, with many more live excursions to be confirmed in the coming weeks. View the current list of dates here.
Danbury, CT – Wishbone Ash, one of the most influential guitar bands in the history of Rock, kicks off the North American leg of their 2013 tour on February 28. The group returns to these shores following a successful spring tour last year to celebrate the release of their highly acclaimed studio album, Elegant Stealth, and on the heels of the RoadWorks 3 release, a collection of live performances.
During the Elegant Stealth Tour of 2012, Wishbone Ash played to full houses in the Northeast and Midwest. The upcoming North American Tour features many familiar venues plus several new stops, including dates on the West Coast and in Canada.
Released in November 2011 by ZYX Music, Elegant Stealth represents a benchmark in the evolution of Wishbone Ash. Signature twin-lead melodies and a powerhouse rhythm section frame 11 new tracks that reflect a diverse realm of styles and moods.
Formed in 1969, Wishbone Ash has more than 20 original studio recordings and several live albums to their credit. On Elegant Stealth, the group coalesces around strong songwriting and serious chops. Founding member AndyPowell handles lead vocals and trades licks with Finland’s guitar wizard Muddy Manninen. Bassist Bob Skeat, a 15-year veteran of the band and in-demand studio musician, sets the pace with Joe Crabtree, one of the best of Britain’s new breed of drummers, having played with Pendragon and David Cross of King Crimson. The band demonstrates its versatility on Elegant Stealth, from the Pop/Rocker “Reason to Believe” to the gentler vibe of “Give it Up” to tunes like “Warm Tears” and “Big Issues,” where the band gets to stretch out and flex its musical muscles.
Below, listen to and watch the music video forReason To Believe:
Classic Rock Revisited’s Jeb Wright called Elegant Stealth “one of the best albums in Wishbone Ash’s 42 year career.”
Keith “MuzikMan” Hannaleck of MuzikReviews.com said, “This band is like a fine wine that just keeps getting better with age and this is one of their strongest studio releases in years.”
“The songs are catchy, very technical, but there is a soul in what Wishbone Ash is doing!” said Mark Kadzielawa of 69 Faces of Rock.
Citing Wishbone Ash as an influence on their style, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Southern Rock outfits like Lynyrd Skynyrd and, more recently, heavyweights like Opeth and some of the guitar- based Indie/Alternative bands, have all taken a little something from the legendary twin-guitar approach of Wishbone Ash. Truly, there is no other Rock band on the planet that has done more with the twin guitar concept than the Ash.

Candlelight Records today confirms May 7th as the North American release date for False Prism, the debut full-length from SADGIQACEA. Produced by Chris Grigg (Woe), the album’s four mammoth songs will pummel listeners for close to 40-minutes. The album follows their 2011 EP, Submerged in Manichea (Horror Pain Gore Death Productions) and two regarded split recordings with Ominous Black and Grass (Anthropic).
Heavy Planet says, “While destroying everything in their path, Philadelphia-based SADGIQACEA creates an inspiring assault of devastation. Crushing riffs and ambient beauty swirl as the vocals bark… epic and full-on sludge.” Fueled by the duo of Evan Schaefer (vocals/guitar) and Fred Grabosky (vocals/drums), the band has already proven themselves road savvy. Plans are already in order to return to the road for the album’s springtime release. “We are honored to be working with Candlelight Records and ready to spread our music to masses with their support,” says the band. “We are currently planning our second full American tour with our Philadelphia brothers Hivelords for Summer 2013.”
Formed in 2010, SADGIQACEA (pronounced sad-juh-kay-sha) forge a diverse sonic palette that has been likened at times to Neurosis, Intronaut, Weakling, and Kylesa. Musically and artistically, the band draws from a melting pot of influences that together presents a lush yet tension-filled sound. They call it, “music for our trodden minds and sodden souls.” SADGIQACEA has performed alongside 40 Watt Sun, Floor, Cough, Weedeater, Fight Amp, Mose Giganticus, ASG, Funeral Pyre, Hull and countless others in their still short history.
Recorded early September 2012 at Gradwell House in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, False Prism features sparring use of overdubs; the band wishing to preserve the authentic recording quality of the live performance. Writing and performing as a duo, the unique band is committed to their craft. Discussing the album SADGIQACEA says, “The album has themes of inner struggle, spirituality, and our own reflections on the dualistic nature of the evil that we all see and experience in our lives.”
Falm Prism will be released on CD and vinyl (under license to Anthropic Records).

Chicago – Beak, the Chicago-based Post-Metal quartet who made a splash with their 2012 EP release Eyrie, are currently in the studio working on their debut full-length.
“The forthcoming record is a contemplation on beginnings and the struggle for life,” explained vocalist Jon Slusher. “As a follow-up to Eyrie, if in record time was the end of all things, then the new album deals with creation after the destruction, the cycle of life.” The band has reunited with engineer Neil Strauch (Iron and Wine, Bonnie Prince Billy) and are recording at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio. The album is due this fall.
Beak – Eyrie
Eyrie was an unexpected surprise from a relatively unknown band with review after review noting what a surprising and worthwhile find the five-track release was. Spin said “Chicago post-metal party crashers have songwriting acumen and hardcore bent that… Neur-Isis copycats sorely lack,” Heavy Metal About.com added “I have no doubt that Beak will become a force to be reckoned with” and Stereokiller offered “Eyrie is more than a pleasant surprise. It’s one of the better EPs I’ve heard in sometime. It being an EP is really the only somewhat negative thing I can say. I want more, 5 tracks isn’t enough.”
The band play a hometown show on Feb. 23 at Beat Kitchen where they will perform songs from Eyrie as well as a preview of what’s to come on the new album.
