DESTRUCTION – Covers A DIO Classic ‘Stand Up And Shout’ With Legendary, Unyielding Thrash Intensity!

DESTRUCTION – The German Thrash Metal band Destruction released their eleventh studio album on March 8th, 2011, via Nuclear Blast America. On this immensely Thrash fortified album is the cover song of the DIO classic: Stand Up And Shout. Covering a legendary classic such as this song takes Metal balls… and Destruction are legends that can deliver the Thrashin’ goods. Destruction accomplished quite the Metal feat with their cover of Stand Up And Shout, creating an all-out Thrashtastic tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio, in my Metal opinion.

With their very own legendary Thrash style on Stand Up And Shout, Destruction tears it up and kicks some legitimate Metal ass. A Metal song that will be the battle cry of Metalheads for ions to come, Stand Up And Shout!!

DESTRUCTION:

Schmier – bass & vocals

Mike – guitars

Vaaver – drums

* Stand Up And Shout is a bonus track on Day Of Reckoning.

DARKEST HOUR: Shoots A New Music Video For “Love As A Weapon” – Plus Summer Slaughter Tour Dates!

(New York, NY) — DARKEST HOUR have just wrapped up the video shoot for “Love As A Weapon” off their latest release “The Human Romance.” Directed by Scott Hansern, the video takes on a very traditional performance approach to metal videos.

Guitarist Mike Schleibaum comments, “Filming the video with producer Scott Hansen was totally bad ass! Filming on a rooftop above our hometown of Washington, DC, with hail and lightning storms in the distance made for an epic filming experience. The final product will include us performing coupled with time lapsed montages of both majestic and disgusting footage. The contrast of these will surely make for a sick piece of metal videography.”

The band has also announced their participation in this year’s SUMMER SLAUGHTER tour. They’ll be supporting THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER and WHITECHAPEL alongside SIX FEET UNDER and DYING FETUS. Keep an eye on the official Summer Slaughter Facebook page for more info!

KITTIE – Announces Headlining 2011 Summer Tour & New Album Update

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal tours, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 14, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

(New York, NY) — Veteran road warriors, KITTIE will be hitting the road this summer on a headlining run spanning the entire U.S. including the notorious “Gathering Of The Juggalos” festival. DIRGE WITHIN andDIAMOND PLATE will offer support.

The band has been in the studio since April recording their yet untitled new record. What promises to be a grittier record than their previous effort “In the Black,” front woman Morgan Lander offers her own words:

“We have been working exceptionally hard, crafting what is to be our 6th full length release, and our second for eOne. In some cases these new songs are faster, darker and much more sinister than our previous release. It contains some of the most difficult and personal subject matter I have had the pleasure (or displeasure) of writing.”

Once again the band has enlisted the producing talent of Siegfried“Siggy” Meier at Beach Road Studios in Goderich Ontario, Canada.“The girls have written some incredible and personal songs this time around. They’re heavy as shit and relentless. It’s a pleasure and an honor to be doing another record with one of the best metal bands of our time,” says Meier. The new record will be released later this year.

KITTIE released “In the Black” in 2009 to critical acclaim, “Kittie’s fifth record sees the gals back in heavier form, with Morgan’s much-improved clean vocals soaring alongside mountain-sized riffage.” says Revolver Magazine. Blabbermouth.net even hailed the record as the“biggest metal shock of the year.” The girls spent the next two years on successful tours with acts like DEVILDRIVER, ICP and last year’s THRASH AND BURN TOUR. Multiple music videos were shot for singles like “Sorrow I know” and “Die My Darling”, all can be seenHERE

KATANA – Heads Will Roll: Traditional Heavy Metal Triumphs On This Band’s Debut Album

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, traditional heavy metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

KATANA Heads Will Roll – Gothenburg, Sweden is where Katana calls home, with their current lineup being established back in 2008.  The debut studio album from Katana, Heads Will Roll, was released in the U.S. on May 31st, 2011, on Listenable Records and it is a delectable bounty of Traditional Heavy Metal to devour. Heads Will Roll is an album of nine Heavy Metal songs that will stamp the time travel ticket for any old schooler… back to the days of Classic Metal glory.

The album title Heads Will Roll reminds me of the Judas Priest classic: Some Heads Are Gonna Roll, from their vintage 1984 album Defenders Of The Faith. There’s just something about heads rolling that sounds, well, Metal. All kidding aside, this debut album from Katana seems to gain more Metal steam after each song. This is an album that just sounds alive and comes across scorching in all of it’s Traditional Metal bliss the more I listen to it.

Heart of Tokyo and Asia in Sight are two blockbuster songs that are smack in the Metal middle of this album. Both songs are capable of drop-kicking poser Metal into the next millennium. Hell, this entire Heads Will Roll album screams: Classic Metal Reigns! The overall Classic Metal vibe that is captured by Katana on this album is very impressive. These are musicians that have done their Classic Metal homework and aren’t afraid to look down upon any “new” Metal trends of the week.

If I had to choose the numero uno song on this album that absolutely kicks the most major Metal ass, well then, it’s Rebel Ride. Shades and obvious influence of the Priest’s Metal guitar legends K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton are heard, courtesy from the double guitar attack of Patrik Essén and Tobias Karlsson on Rebel Ride. This influence is clear as day and sounds Metal supreme. Both guitarists are fun to take in throughout this entire album. Back to Rebel Ride… it’s such a fantastic Metal song to get psyched-out by, that I’ve come close to pinching myself to make certain I’m not dreaming.

The vocals of Johan Bernspång resonates the essence of yesteryear’s New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Eloquent, dynamic and consistently captivating are Johan’s vocals. No, I’m not anointing Johan as the greatest Metal singer I’ve ever heard, I’m only stating he is a Metal vocalist to keep your eyes on and your ears tuned to… for the next twenty years or more. I would have to say with certainty, that Johan reminds me of Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray, ex-Helloween). Don’t mistake me here at all, Johan comes across as a very welcomed and unique Metal vocalist to this sacred community.

At 6:50 long, the mini-epic Quest for Hades finishes off Heads Will Roll, whilst the audio senses of Iron Maiden and even Helloween are swirling through my brain. Comparisons and/or influences aside, Katana comes at me as blatant originals to the Traditional Heavy Metal genre. This band can not only play, they also present themselves as true believers and honor students of Classic Metal. Need proof that Katana is as legit as Metal itself? Then submerse your eardrums into Heads Will Roll and thank the Metal Gods that another young Traditional Metal band has gotten it right.

KATANA HAS TRIUMPHED.

Faithsedge – Giancarlo Floridia: A Metal Odyssey Interview!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock vocalists, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, interviews, melodic metal, melodic rock, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music interviews, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on June 11, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Giancarlo Floridia of Faithsedge – Back on April 19th, 2011, Giancarlo Floridia took one enormous plunge into the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal limelight with the release of his band’s debut and self-titled album via Scarlet Records. FAITHSEDGE is now a part of Rock history. Will Giancarlo Floridia and Faithsedge add more chapters to their own Rock history? I’m banking on it. This debut album from Faithsedge combines more delicious Melodic Hard Rock moments, within it’s quality songs, than I can actually count.

With a world-class band of musicians surrounding Giancarlo, Faithsedge are not just another supergroup. They are a band that has created what I consider to be one of the best albums of 2011, in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal combined. With the guidance and experience from the world respected producer and bass guitarist Fabrizio Grossi, the path to Heavy Rock success for Giancarlo has been paved. As a songwriter, lyricist, vocalist and guitarist for Faithsedge, Giancarlo has impressively paid his Rockin’ dues for any and all positive response thrown his way.

Giancarlo is both solidly confident and humble, two attributes necessary for a rising talent in the Rock Music world. Forget about any “newcomer” tag… Giancarlo for all Metal intents and purposes… Rocks. Throw in the obvious fact that Giancarlo is one grounded and a hell of a nice guy and the point is clear: I’m rooting for him each and every step of the Metal way. Recently, Giancarlo took the time to talk to Metal Odyssey about the debut Faithsedge album, it’s memorable songs, influences, life and Rock and Roll. Here is what Giancarlo had to say:

Stone: Giancarlo, how did Faithsedge all fall into place as a band?

Giancarlo: The way everything worked out was great. Being a fan of Fabrizio’s (Fabrizio Grossi) and then working with him was awesome. Alex (De Rosso) and Tony (Morra) the same thing, just great people and great musicians. I had a five song ep that I did with Juan Croucier (x – Ratt) and showed it to Fabrizio after leaving California for a little while and it was enough to get my foot in the door to work with him and then we took it from there. Fab (Fabrizio) got Alex and Tony involved and the rest is history! The chemistry just happened.

(Faithsedge debut/self-titled album cover – Scarlet Records)

Stone: Describe what it’s like to work with Fabrizio Grossi.

Giancarlo: Well he’s a hard worker but he still makes it fun. I mean you have to trust your producer (at least I do) and since I was already a fan of his work it was easy. Everything just kinda fell into place in terms of people involved, lyrics, song idea’s, parts etc.. We knew when something was off or if a chorus or a lyric needed to be better. Like for example, “Let It End This Way” was the last vocal to track and the lyrics I had before were good, only we both knew it didn’t fit the record. So, I went back and wrote it at home in like less than an hour with some different ideas I had. Since he wasn’t a jerk about things it was stress free getting eveything done. If something comes up I just let him know, he’s easy going and easy to work with and freakin talented as hell! I mean that sums the guy up! Just don’t piss him off! (Laughs).

Stone: (Laughs) Okay, I would never consider making Fabrizio mad at me! You’ve mentioned in the past, Joe Lynn Turner is an influence on you. Is it fair of me to have written you may very well be the next Joe Lynn Turner of Hard Rock?

Giancarlo: Wow! Ya know, it’s amazing to see people compare me to him or Geoff Tate or Tony Harnell or one of the top guys in the Hard Rock vocal scene. To be put in that league is um, an awesome thing. All I can really say is I want to be one of the new top Metal and Hard Rock singers and I work really really hard at it. I think with hard work and just doing the best I can as a writer and singer, while trying to progress and get better and better, people are getting the point of what I am going for and that makes me happy. At first I wasn’t sure if people were gonna let me into the scene, being somewhat of a newcomer, but they have and I’m thankful! So Thanks everyone and thank you Stone!

Stone: Gee Metal whiz, thank you Giancarlo! How excited are you by the positive response critics have given your debut album?

Giancarlo: It’s been great, there are a few haters but they dont talk smack on us as musicians or me as a singer, they mostly gripe about my lyrics or whatever! (Laughs). I’d rather write about stuff that is personal or real, rather than try to come up with some sort of stupid gimmick to my lyrics. I mean, if it doesn’t come from my heart whats the point? I know I’ll regret it later. Whats important is that people get something from it and I know they have from the emails and other things I’ve read. But as far as all the good reviews go, yeah, it’s been great. I am proud of everyone involved and to have great reviews is just a plus! So thanks for all the great reviews!

Stone: What guitarist or guitarists do you look upon for inspiration?

Giancarlo: Alex De Rosso cause I suck compared to him! (Laughs). Honestly, I am not much of a lead player and I am just more into riffs and the overall drive of a song or direction of a record. I like progressive stuff like old Queensryche and Dream Theater, Metal like Megadeth and Anthrax, and Arena Rock like 80’s KISSOzzy, Scorpions and Bon Jovi. I like 70’s rock too. So I guess it’s an overal mix of sounds that I like that makes Faithsedge. You can hear a mix of all of that on the cd, thats why you may have a tune thats more Metal and another more Arena Rock, so it depends on my mood or what I feel the album needs without going too far right or left of the overall sound.

Stone: As a songwriter and lyricist for your debut album, which two songs mean the most to you and why?

Giancarlo: If I had to pick two? “Somewhere In Your Heart” and “Faith-Anne”, maybe because they are both about my kids. “Somewhere In Your Heart” most likey because I was able to put almost like a “70’s kinda lyrics” into a somewhat Progressive Rock song and make it work with all the key changes. Plus, I like the postive feel to it. “Faith-Anne” because it almost didn’t make the record. I finished the chorus less than an hour of having to record it. I’ll never forget not being able to get the chorus right and sitting in the Valencia Town Center Mall parking lot and hearing it in my head the day I had to track it. I’ll never forget walking into the studio and telling Fabrizio I had finally got it! I mean, when you write a song to your daughter who you haven’t seen in a while and you know there is a chance she’s gonna hear it when she’s been held away from you, it had to be special. I feel I got that across in the song. Funny thing is, our relationship has been restored since the album has come out and the line I wanted her to hear “We had everyday, remember those days?”, well she did. I’m Proud to be a part of her life again.

Stone: Giancarlo, that is a song and story that goes straight to the heart. Awesome. How is the new material coming along for your second album?

Giancarlo: Great! I’m writing the music for the last song now. Eleven tracks I have along the same lines of Metal, Progressive and Melodic. I have the lyrics almost done for four songs. The titles are “Telling the Sky”, “Save the Promise”, Closer to the Truth” and my favorite song I’ve ever written that’s called “When I lost You”. I am gonna be touching more direct issues on the record like my history with my dad, abuse and dark subject matter with a positive outcome. It’s kinda like what I did with tunes like “Another Chance” and “World Keeps Falling Down” on the first record. I will also do some relationship stuff along with a new storyline song I am working on that I don’t have the title for yet, but I have the all the music done and it’s gona be really cool. Music wise though, I’m not going to change the style. People want good, hard, American Rock albums in the Melodic Rock and Metal community. If certain bands that can don’t wanna give it to ’em, it’s ok, I will! (Laughs). Anyways, I’m hoping I’ll have all the lyrics and hooks all done within a year, that way I don’t stress it and the lyrics come out equally as good, just as it did with the first album.

Faithsedge: From L to R: Tony Morra, Giancarlo Floridia, Fabrizio Grossi, Alex De Rosso.

Stone: In your opinion, has Melodic Hard Rock and Melodic Heavy Metal made a comeback these past few years in the U.S.?

Giancarlo: Well it’s awesome bands like KISSMaiden and Priest still doing it. I don’t see too many American new comers doing it, I mean a few are but most of them are from over sea’s or partner with musicians from other countries. Maybe it’s cause they really have a love for this kind of music and don’t care about what people think. Where as in the States you get more of “whats trendy today” is what’s hot! Llllllaaaaaaaaammmme!

Stone: I agree, very lame! On a scale of one through ten, how much of a perfectionist were you while creating the Faithsedge debut album?

Giancarlo: (Laughs) I abused myself, I was one hundred percent happy with every lyric and melody other than one song which I could have done better on the chorus, in my opinion it’s by far the most cliché chorus on the cd. However, I love the verses and the bridge before the solo. Oh well, I’ll make it up on the second album and no, I’m not saying what song it is! (Laughs). I know I’m just wrong huh?

Stone: You’re not wrong, it’s called keeping the fans in suspense! If Faithsedge could tour with two current bands of your choice tomorrow, what bands would they be?

Giancarlo: Anyband that kicks ass that would give us exposure in the market of Hard Rock and Metal. I would love to do some Europe gigs if I could too!

Stone: Great answer! How true is this statement: “music mirrors life”.

Giancarlo: Thanks, I am gonna steal that for the next cd! Just kidding. I mean, in my life music has been the thing that I’ve connected with so often, with many people, wether if thats someone I meet thats a fan or it’s a genre or a rare band that I like that not everyone knows about. It’s how I connect with people thats all I can really say! Did you come up with that saying?

Stone: Um, well, I probably did come up with that saying. I think. (Laughs). Has Giancarlo’s wish come true with your incredible debut album or is this just the beginning?

Giancarlo: It’s nice when I get magazines from Germany, Italy, France and the States and I see myself in them. I do hope it takes off more and more of course, to where it becomes huge and we can play out live a lot and I can make more of a career of it. And I do want to say this, it’s not over till you decide it’s over and listening to negative and destructive people is a big mistake! I don’t care how close they were to me or how they were supposed to be my family or whatever. For once in my life, other than my kids, I’ve found something where as I put in all my efforts that the result has shown. The proof is in the album and shows that the doubters were wrong. When you believe in yourself and work hard you can do great things. Thats not just in music thats just in any goal in life!

Stone: Well said Giancarlo, well said. I wish nothing but the very best of success for your band and career! You Rock my Metal brutha!

Giancarlo: No problem and thank you Stone!

IRON MAIDEN – From Fear To Eternity: Essential Maiden To Own

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 9, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

IRON MAIDEN – Yes, as the die-hard Iron Maiden fan that I am, I bought From Fear To Eternity on Tuesday, June 7th, 2011. The sub-title is: The Best Of 1990-2010. There’s something about “needing” a new CD of songs that I already own… it’s called what am I thinking? In fairness, I actually never owned the live version of Man On The Edge… until now. Apparently this live version was the B-side of the Wicker Man single. I’ll mention Man On The Edge again in this post…

Regardless of my buyers remorse over this new Iron Maiden “best of”, the cover artwork looks super cool and the liner notes are Metal dandy. A killer center-spread in the liner notes depicts 7 versions of (mascot) Eddie from the past 20 years, with a second center-spread documenting all 8 studio albums from this time period as well.

Having 23 of Iron Maiden’s “best” songs from the last two decades, on two CD’s makes for a convenient listen, whether I’m on the go or just chillin’ out. Plus, there is much to be said about us collectors wanting a complete run of our core bands. As I look at it a few days later, I’m psyched that I bought From Fear To Eternity. This is Iron Maiden! (Even though my favorite Iron Maiden era is the 80’s decade). Heck, there are times when I will spend a quick ten bucks on coffee in one day or that same amount on beer and I won’t even bat an eye. Well, I kinda do.

I do wish that the songs from the two albums that had lead vocalist Blaze Bayley  (The X Factor, Virtual XI) were included as the original studio tracks. The 3 songs from these two albums are presented live with the legendary Bruce Dickinson on vocals. The 3 songs are: Man On The Edge, Sign Of The Cross and The Clansman. Blaze Bayley was a member of Iron Maiden after all (which is quite a Metal feat) and he should get his deserved recognition on this “best of”. In the end, it’s like Lenny Wolf of Kingdom Come would say: “it is what it is”.

* From Fear To Eternity was released on June 7th, 2011 on Universal Music.

* The album cover artwork was designed/illustrated by Melvyn Grant.

Track Listing:

CD One: The Wicker Man * Holy Smoke * El Dorado * Paschendale * Different World * Man On The Edge (live) * The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg * Blood Brothers * Rainmaker * Sign Of The Cross (live) * Brave New World * Fear Of The Dark (live)

DREAM THEATER – Announce New Album Title, Track Listing and Release Date

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on June 8, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

The following is a press release from RoadRunner Records, on June 8th, 2011:

(New York, NY): The recent announcement that Mike Mangini would be joining Dream Theater, replacing departed drummer Mike Portnoy caused such fanfare that  Mangini was a trending topic on Twitter, second only to England’s Royal Wedding. Now, the band is revealing more information about their upcoming album. The new album is titled A Dramatic Turn of Events. The much-anticipated platter, which marks Mangini’s recorded debut, will be released via Roadrunner Records on September 13th and will be supported by a massive world tour.

“I’m incredibly psyched with the way this album came out and can’t wait to share it with everybody,” guitarist John Petrucci, who also serves as the producer for A Dramatic Turn of Events, said. “We are currently in the mix stage with the great Andy Wallace and it’s all sounding amazing!”

“We have poured our hearts and minds into the creation of this album,” keyboardist Jordan Rudess offered. “All the life changing events that surrounded us before,  as well as during the whole process, fueled our desire to dig deep within ourselves and create the best music we possibly could.”

Vocalist James LaBrie said, “In the grand scheme of Dream Theater’s career, the last several months have been such an incredibly positive, fulfilling and rewarding experience. The new songs and sound has never been so spirited or rejuvenating. I cannot wait for every one of our fans to sink their audio senses into this batch of tunes.”

The track listing for A Dramatic Turn of Events is as follows:

1. On the Backs of Angels

2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down

3. Lost Not Forgotten

4. This is the Life

5. The Shaman’s Trance

ARCH ENEMY “KHAOS LEGIONS” – Releases In U.S. June 7th, 2011: New Album Is Scalding And Delivers The Metal Offensive!

ARCH ENEMY – Releasing in the U.S. on June 7th, 2011, is the eighth studio album from ARCH ENEMY. This Swedish Melodic Death Metal band is on fire once again with KHAOS LEGIONS, leaving no door open for posers to enter and re-establishing why they are living Metal legends. Angela Gossow reaffirms her glorious position as one of this genre’s greatest vocalists, while the Amott brothers (Christopher and Michael) cement their status as one of Metal’s all-time finest guitar duos.

ARCH ENEMY also covers four Metal classics from KISS, Europe, Dream Evil and Hardcore Punk legends: Discharge. This second CD of covers is available on the Deluxe Edition/Media Book Versions. ARCH ENEMY delivers the Metal goods covering these songs, I wish they chose a dozen more! KHAOS LEGIONS is a formidable follow-up to 2007’s Rise of the Tyrant and I was never expecting anything less from ARCH ENEMY.

If your looking to be stomped into Metal submission, while simultaneously begging for NO Metal mercy, I strongly suggest you buy KHAOS LEGIONS and thank the Metal Gods of our Metal Underworld… that ARCH ENEMY is unleashed and will not be contained!

SHAKRA – Back On Track: Swiss Hard Rock Band Is Blazing Forward!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on May 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

SHAKRA – Watch out… before you dive your eardrums into this new Shakra studio album Back On Track, bear in mind this veteran band is aiming to kick your Hard Rockin’ and Heavy Metalin’ ass! I just cannot resist warning you all. When an album of 13 songs ROCKS this HARD, HEAVY and MEMORABLE, by God I am gonna raise some noize about it. Released on May 3rd, 2011 via AFM Records, Back On Track has Shakra on track for worldwide Hard Rock domination. Glory be to Metal, this album is a non-stopper… I just can’t hit the stop button when it is playing. I could have easily taken the easy road, by just giving this album a three word review like this: buy this album. Alas, I have to rant and rave about Back On Track.

Based in Switzerland, Shakra is following up on their last album Everest, which soared to #4 on the Swiss album charts back in 2009. I honestly see Shakra making gigantic strides in the States, with enough promotion and (hopefully) consistent radio play, be it FM or satellite. Shakra is tailor made for the Hard & Heavy Rock that makes 80’s old schoolers proud and play with enough relevance for todays younger generation to dig… big time. In a Metal nutshell, Shakra caught my undivided Hard Rockin’ attention from the opener B True B You to the unbelievable closer: Stonger Than Ever. This last song puts the thunder stamp on this album where I’m left muttering… holy crap that was one hell of a goooood listen!

Shakra now has a new lead singer with John Prakesh, (replacing Mark Fox) and he is damn good. Damn good. There are moments where I hear some Marc Storace (influence?) in John’s vocals, only don’t think for one second that John Prakesh isn’t an original. His vocals are a reminder to me, that a band can be elevated by it’s front man. This guy sings the Rockin’ daylights out of this album, Metal be thy name and hallelujah to all. Shakra plays as a cohesive unit, with their energy and Heavy Rock spirit coming through LOUD and very clear on Back On Track. Blazing is the most adequate adjective to describe the sound and total vibe I receive from Shakra, these guys are running on all Hard & Heavy Rock cylinders with Back On Track.

Revved up guitar leads and Hard Rockin’ riffs? Check. Hooks? Check. Melodic and memorable songs? Check. Pumped up chorus? Check. Thumpin’ rhythm section? Check. Psyche-you-out sonic thrills by the minute? Um… check again. Look, I would never praise an album that is the equivalent of bird crap on a windshield. Shakra has created an album that is the equivalent of a Hard & Heavy Rock celebration. This celebration called Back On Track MUST be shared to all fellow Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans alike. Shakra for all intents and purposes, have smacked it down and let it loose with Back On TrackSpread the Hard Rock word: SHAKRA.

* Recorded and produced with Shakra’s own guitarist Thom Blunier, at Power Ride Studios.

* Back On Track entered the official Swiss Album Charts at #2, the highest charting SHAKRA album ever. Back On Track entered the German Album Charts at #84.

* Back On Track is the eighth studio album from SHAKRA.

SHAKRA:

John Prakesh – vocals

Thom Blunier – lead guitar

Thomas Muster – rhythm guitar

Dominik Pfister – bass

Roger Tanner – drums

UNEARTH – Darkness In The Light: Album Art and Track Listing Revealed! New Song Stream Available!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, metalcore, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 11, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

UNEARTH – Pit-churning, Melodic Metal pioneers, UNEARTH, are currently readying to unveil Darkness In The Light, their fifth full-length in a discography that’s placed the band among the most prolific and plainly ravaging modern metal acts to come out of the U.S. Set for North American release on July 5 via Metal Blade Records, the 11-track long player — their most conceptually personal offering to date — was recorded at Zing Studios in Westfield, Massachusetts with producer (and Killswitch Engage guitarist) Adam Dutkiewicz and mixed at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Trivium, et al). Sitting in on drums during the recording was Justin Foley of Killswitch Engage/Blood Has Been Shed.

Commented UNEARTH vocalist Trevor Phipps of the band’s latest output: “Darkness In The Light is without a doubt some of the heaviest, most dynamic and memorable tunes we’ve ever written. The disc is littered with the shred ‘n’ stomp-filled songs our fans would expect from us, as well as some added vocal hooks, guitar melodies, guitar solos and some different paths taken in style and structure. We knew we had to continue to separate ourselves from the pack and to cement our place in the Heavy Metal world as one of the leaders and not as one of the many followers that seem to hop on the trend wagon and give up so easily when the going gets hard. We are here to stay and collectively we couldn’t be any more fired up to play these songs around the world for our fans new and old.”

Darkness In The Light Track Listing:

01. Watch It Burn

02. Ruination Of The Lost

03. Shadows In The Light

04. Eyes Of Black

05. Last Wish

06. Arise The War Cry

07. Equinox

08. Coming Of The Dark

09. The Fallen

10. Overcome

11. Disillusion

UNEARTH:

Trevor Phipps – Vocals

Buz McGrath – Guitar

Ken Susi – Guitar

John “Slo” Maggard – Bass

Justin Foley – Studio Drummer

The first single, the instantly pummeling “Eyes Of Black,” is currently streaming on the band’s official album landing page, which includes updated tour info, pre-order options and more. Said Phipps of the track: “We chose ‘Eyes Of Black’ to be the first song heard out of the gate as we feel it represents the ‘UNEARTH sound’ and style perfectly and it’s simply a hard-hitting, catchy-as-hell song. The lyrics are also in line with many of the albums darker lyrical themes. I’m not speaking for all of the band, but this is my personal favorite on the album and I can’t wait to get out there and play it live!” To check out the tune, point your browser to THIS LOCATION.

Several pre-order deals for Darkness In The Light are available. Packages include:

TWISTED TOWER DIRE – Make It Dark: Classic Metal Triumphs Once Again

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, traditional metal with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 6, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

TWISTED TOWER DIRE – The fifth full-length studio album from Virginia’s Twisted Tower Dire has been released on May 3rd, 2011, via Cruz Del Sur Music and it’s worth more than it’s weight in Metal gold. As the classically inspired album cover from famed UK artist Martin Hanford and the type fonts suggests, Twisted Tower Dire is a Classic Metal band and Make It Dark is an eight song Traditional Metal triumph.

This is a band that has had to overcome prolific tragedy in the past year. Vocalist Tony Taylor was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident back on February 6th, 2010, being replaced by Johnny Aune (Viper). The triumph of human spirit that this band has bestowed in regrouping, coupled by the fearless drive that Make It Dark reverberates with it’s Classic Metal, is nothing short of admirable.

Throughout Make It Dark, the songs come across as not just well written, they are all extremely well executed. Metal resolve is a very good thing and Twisted Tower Dire bring it on their new album. This album reminds me of days long ago, hanging out in the moonlit field with my Metal brethren, while the sweet smell of ganga filled the air and the beers were in no short supply. Um, uh, back to the album review and 2011…

Johnny Aune is a bona-fide Classic Metal vocalist. In my Metal opinion, Johnny is a vocalist that guitar legend Yngwie Malmsteen would dig… and maybe he does? The Classic Metal echo fills this entire album, while leaving signatures of welcomed semi-raw and non-plasticized production every step of the way. The bass of Jim Hunter coupled with Mark Stauffer’s drumming is a rhythmic feast built on that Classic Metal speed. We’re in the midst of an age that’s called a Classic Metal revival and that school of thought is fine with me, only I and obviously countless others have never turned away from Classic Metal.

This old school Metal sound will never die due to bands such as Twisted Tower Dire. With the likes of their peers Enforcer, White Wizzard, Ravage, 3 Inches Of BloodDerailed and Darkblack making their presence heard, the flame of this Metal genre has never burned brighter. Old school fans of Grim Reaper, Obsession and Paul Dianno fronted Iron Maiden should take a keen Metal liking to the dual guitars of Scott Waldrop and Dave Boyd. These two axe slingers exchange some very melodic and speedy guitar licks that are like the Metal icing on the Metal cake.

Yes, Speed Metal too can once again reign Metal supreme while Make It Dark is played at maximum volume. The old school vibes never subside while I listen to Make It Dark and I like it that way. Mystera, White Shadow, Torture Torture and Beyond The Gate are Classic Metal gems. Beyond The Gate is remarkable in it’s ability to suck my senses right into it’s Classic Metal richness, therefore, this is my favorite song on Make It Dark.

With there being so many Metal choices out there for new album purchases in 2011, Make It Dark is as upstanding as I can declare. Make It Dark is a reminder to us all, that Metal truly does sound real again. Make the credible Metal choice and buy Make It Dark for yourself… it will serve you Metal right.

Scott Waldrop – guitar

Dave Boyd – guitar

STRAIGHT LINE STITCH – Shoot New Music Video, Behind The Scenes Footage Available!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on May 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

(Alexis Brown – Vocals)

(New York, NY) — STRAIGHT LINE STITCH have shot a brand new music video for their next single “One Reason” off their latest record The Fight Of Our Lives which came out earlier this year. Veteran director and band manager Dale ‘Rage’ Resteghini took on the directing duties.

Watch a sneak peak behind the scenes video here.

The band has no qualms about staying on the road this year. They recently announced off-dates with the one and only IN FLAMES during their run on the 2011 ROCKSTAR ENERGY DRINK MAYHEM FESTIVAL. They’ve recently completed a handful of dates with road mates NONPOINT, Revolver magazine’s “Hottest Chicks In Hard Rock: Hell Hath No Fury” tour supporting IN THIS MOMENT and last but not least, DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL. All dates can be found here.

The band’s latest record The Fight Of Our LIves came out on March 22, 2011 to much critical praise. “‘The Fight of Our Lives’ is a good example of what happens when modern American metal-core is performed with passion and intensity,” says OUTBURN MAGAZINE. The band released their first single “Conversion” soon after with a video to follow, also directed by Resteghini.

STRAIGHT LINE STITCH originally hailing from Knoxville, TN, features Alexis Brown on vocals, Seth Thacker and Kris Norris on guitar, Jason White on bass, and Kanky Lora on drums.

Between The Buried And Me – The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is Divergent and Exceptional

Posted in Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on May 2, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME: Released on April 12th, 2011, via Metal Blade Records, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is the seventh studio album released by BTBAM and first on the legendary Metal Blade Records. This new album from BTBAM may contain just three songs, only each song is a Progressive Metal epic to behold. The total playing time for all three songs is just around thirty minutes. This is thirty minutes of listening to a Metal band that takes song structure, lyrics and musicianship very, very, seriously.

While listening to the tempered down guitar and vocals on Lunar Wilderness, along with it’s rhythmic deceleration, I admittedly hear a progressiveness from the Classic Rock era of YES and very early RUSH. It’s the resonance of that classic tone that spills out from the vocals of Tommy Rogers, with Dustie Waring and Paul Waggoner giving that feel of a long ago Progressive Rock era that they have brought to relevance in this song. Lunar Wilderness can certainly be pointed out as having it’s Extreme vocal and Metal moments, qualities that BTBAM manifest brilliantly.

Specular Reflection clocks in at 11:21 and is progressively enriched with all things great about BTBAM. The piano key intro accompanied with orchestration and chorus, only leads me into the mind blowing, Extreme Metal journey that this ultra-talented band is so vastly known for creating. BTBAM fans won’t be disappointed while new fans shall be mesmerized and pulled into the Progressive and Extreme circle of sound that they’ll hear from Specular Reflection.

Augment Of Rebirth from the onset is a furious Metal assault onto the senses. Easily the heaviest song of the three. With unyielding Extreme vocals, the raging tempo subsides with soothing vocals for a few intervals, beginning at the three quarter mark. Is Augment Of Rebirth a dream? A Nightmare? A daydream? Lyrically, this song casts a melancholy image of battling oneself within the framework of one’s own mind. Be it sub-conscious or conscious, BTBAM sets the mood musically around the lyrics of Tommy Rogers which culminates in a surreal and yet still, Extreme way.

When I listen to an uncommon Progressive Metal band such as BTBAM, I come to the realization that barriers are meant to be torn down within the framework of any Rock genre. Any BTBAM album needs to be absorbed for hours in order to hear almost everything that is happening within the layers of it’s music. This is what thrills me about remarkable Progressive Metal, when I have to dive into an album such as The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues and actually discover sounds and/or parts of songs that I’ve missed after the first ten listens.

Being one who grew up with the profoundness of Pink Floyd and their Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall masterpieces of Progressive Rock art, I tend to chuckle to myself as I think of BTBAM as a Metal metamorphosis of this iconic band. Seriously, BTBAM are as unique as The Periodic Table Of The Elements itself. Just like this same Periodic Table, BTBAM encompasses a level of discipline and conclusiveness that is Metal meritorious. BTBAM takes this discipline and arranges their songs with an uncanny and explicit manner, to take you on their Progressive Metal exploration. Sonic Unyon Metal is extremely proud to announce the confirmed upcoming release of a live album from the almighty VOIVOD!

Late in 2009, VOIVOD released their live Tatsumaki DVD, filmed the previous fall when they toured Japan for the first time ever. To celebrate its release of the DVD, VOIVOD performed in front of a sold-out crowd on December 12th, 2009 at Club Soda in their adopted hometown of Montreal, Quebec. It was their first headlining show in the city of Montreal in more than ten years and it was celebrated in grand style. It was a fitting end to a busy year that saw them named Metal Band Of The Year at the 2010 Indie Awards in Canada. The show was recorded for posterity and is now being released as the fifteen-track Warriors Of Ice, the first official VOIVOD live album to feature original band members Denis ‘Snake’ Belanger on vocals and bassist Jean-Yves ‘Blacky’ Theriault, as well as new guitarist Dan “Chewy” Mongrain.

Set for release on June 21, 2011, Warriors Of Ice highlights the classic period of the original VOIVOD lineup as well as a few new songs, all raging with the band’s notorious live energy. Containing songs from their classic albums, spanning from 1984’s War And Pain right up through 1991’s Angel Rat, as well as two songs from their 2009 Infini LP, the album is built of VOIVOD’s signature songs, from “Voivod” and “Nuclear War” to “Tribal Convictions” and “Astronomy Domine.” View the cover art for Warriors Of Ice — designed by drummer Michel Langevin, a.k.a. “Away”.

This is the main set VOIVOD ravaged their audiences with on their 2010 US tour alongside Kreator, and at their headlining slot at the 2010 Scion Rock Fest.

VOIVOD are currently touring Europe, and will begin to assault the North American masses again this May when they are scheduled as one of the top headliners of the 2011 Maryland Deathfest. Stay tuned for more North American tour dates to be announced in the coming weeks.
