9 CHAMBERS – Anytime I have a conversation with multi-instrumentalist and producer Greg Hampton, he will light up like the Time Square ball on New Years Eve when Classic Rock and Hard Rock is talked about. Greg has assembled a new band, a “supergroup” if you will, that has more reverence and experience in their Rock and Roll veins for that Classic Hard Rock sound than you can shake a Metal stick at. 9 Chambers makeup has four star musicians who know a thing or two about playing Classic Hard Rock, not to mention Heavy Metal as well. With 9 Chambers, it’s a Hard Rock venture that I’m eagerly anticipating.

Check out the lineup for 9 Chambers: Vocalist and guitarist Greg Hampton (Alice Cooper, The New Czars, Lita Ford), guitarist Ed Mundell (ex-Monster Magnet), Jorgen Carlsson on bass (Gov’t Mule) and Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Heavn & Hell, DIO) on drums. Whoa. Greg Hampton was not kidding around when he told me he was putting together a new band that would psyche out the Hard Rock community! It doesn’t get any more legit than this lineup… Metal be thy name. You can listen to 4 song samples from 9 Chambers by clicking here: 9 Chambers – Audio Samples

Greg Hampton is aiming for an August 2011 release date for the upcoming debut album from 9 Chambers, while negotiating a record deal with management. Greg states they have close to twenty songs written, so there are obviously many cool choices to be made for their debut album. Greg is enthused that he and Ed share common ground on what “old school” Rock music they both listen to, with Free, Armageddon and Captain Beyond, to name a few. The 1983 Black Sabbath release of Born Again has been getting worn out from playing in Greg’s car as of late too, further noting where his heavy music interest lies.

“Some guest drummers of recognition will be on board to finish off a few songs”, Greg added. On what to expect from the Hard Rock sound of 9 Chambers, Greg stated: “We wanted to stick to our original vision as to how the Hard Rock of 9 Chambers should sound, throw in a Soundgarden variable in the equation with both a 90’s and Crooked Vulture vibe to it. There’s a little Stoner vibe happening as well. This album is a lot less progressive than what I’ve done in the past. There are no synths or drum loops. It’s a purist approach of four guys playing Hard Rock”.

HEMOPTYSIS – A Metal Odyssey Interview With Masaki Murashita

(Photo credit: Eyeful Images Photographic Arts)

HEMOPTYSISMasaki Murashita is the founder, lead singer and guitarist for Hemoptysis, a Thrash Metal band from Phoenix, Arizona. Masaki wears a lot of hats these days, while making certain the world is being properly introduced to Hemoptysis. The blending of Extreme Metal styles is what makes Hemoptysis stand-out from the Metal pack. With some Death Metal grooves and occasional shades of Blackened vocal tones from Masaki, these attributes just seem to make the Thrash he and his band have created all the more relevant and unique in 2011. The overriding “Old School” Thrash style and sound of Hemoptysis is the driving force behind the songs heard on their debut full-length – Misanthropic Slaughter.

The “do-it-yourself” work ethic of this band, led by Masaki, released their debut album independently on March 8th, 2011. Since then, the critical response from all over the globe has been nothing short of exhilarating for a band that has justifiably earned it. Masaki is young and driven, with a professional air about him that I cannot help admire. This is a musician in Metal that has a keen sense of awareness for the business side of the recording industry. At the end of the Metal day, it is Masaki’s musical proficiency that he combines with his band’s impressive Metal skills that has left me rather awestruck, ever since my first listen to Misanthropic Slaughter.

I recall wondering and writing, how long can Hemoptysis be left unsigned to a label? This band could not be overlooked for long, however. On March 8th, 2011, the very day that Misanthropic Slaughter was released, it was announced that Rock It Up/IceWarrior Records from Germany signed a licensing deal with Hemoptysis. Metal be thy name, I felt proud for Masaki and his band. It’s a deserved leap forward into eventual Metal stardom. Hemoptysis has Metal stock that is rising fast, so my best advice is to invest your Metal time and money wisely and pick up Misanthropic Slaughter… you surely want to be a part of Thrash Metal and Metal history in the making.

Masaki Murashita is one cool Metal gentleman to speak with. I cannot resist supporting his Metal career and insanely impressive band known as Hemoptysis. Here is what Masaki had to say:

Stone: Just how did Hemoptysis evolve?

Masaki: Travis and I met through a mutual friend in April of 2007.  We started the band in June of 2007 when I found a larger practice space and another guitarist.  We got Sunao to play bass for us in early 2008.  Initially, I wasn’t the singer.  We had a different singer for a few months. After the original singer left, I took over on vocals.  We went through a few lead guitarists until we got Ryan Miller, who is also in a band called Excessive Bleeding.

Stone: How proud are you and the guys for getting signed to Rock It Up/IceWarrior Records?

Masaki: We all are very proud of it. We finally found a label that believes in us. They offered the most fair deal by far and it showed long term interest in our career. We are truly honored and we will continue working hard.

Stone: Metallica “Master Of Puppets” versus Slayer “Reign In Blood”. Which album is better and why? No, you can’t give a “tie” for an answer! (LOL)

Masaki: It’s a tough question since I grew up listening to both albums, but I’d say “Master of Puppets” because that record definitely inspired me to play Metal.

Stone: How have the live gigs been going for you? Tell us about your charity gigs too!

Masaki: It’s been really fun! The charity gig was especially awesome simply because the venue used to be a church and playing songs like “Who Needs A Shepherd?” was just priceless.

Stone: Can you update us on your family and friends well being in Japan?

Masaki: They are all doing well. Thank you! Japanese people are strong. Though it may take some time, they are working really hard to bring back their normal life.

Stone: What do you feel is lacking in today’s Heavy Metal climate when it comes to marketing and promotion?

Masaki: Team work. Everybody needs to work together to keep the scene. Bands can’t expect to get their name out and bring people to their shows without working hard. Same thing to fans. If you would like to see your favorite bands, you need to show them support by spreading the word and buying their merchandise and music. Promoters, venues, and labels also need to do their job and promote the shows to support the bands and the scene. Everybody is becoming greedy nowadays, but at the end of the day, we all need to survive and work together to sustain.

Stone: What inner and outside influence(s) did you and the band draw from, to write and record such a kick ass and Old School album of Metal?

Masaki: I have heavy influence from old school Thrash. Our drummer, Travis, and our lead guitarist, Ryan, are death metal guys. Our bassist, Sunao, listens to everything, including non-Metal stuff. We all have different backgrounds and that makes our music unique when everybody’s ideas blend together.

Stone: Tell the world… what veteran band do you feel Hemoptysis should open up for on a major tour and why?

Masaki: Megadeth, Carcass, Exodus, Testament to name a few. Those bands are just a few of the core influences of our sound and we think the people who are into those bands would like us.

Stone: Are you guys currently writing new Metal material for the next album?

Masaki: Yes. We are already working on the material for the next record.

Stone: With so much critical praise, from so many outlets, for “Misanthropic Slaughter”, are you shocked, knew it was coming or just humbled?

Masaki: We weren’t sure what was going to happen.  We knew we liked it but we weren’t 100% sure what people would think.  A lot of people liked our EP, “Who Needs A Shepherd?,” and gave it good reviews, so we were pretty sure people would like this better since the quality of the recording is so much better.  We also grew as musicians and switched to an even better lead guitarist, so we felt pretty confident about good reviews coming in.  We consider ourselves pretty humble, though.

Stone: What band that you’ve seen perform live left you awestruck?

Masaki: D.R.I. We opened for them last September and we were amazed how much their fans love them. The crowd was nuts! We’ve never seen that crazy of a pit and crowd at the venue in which we played. Much respect to them for being one of the most legendary “Do It Yourself (DIY)” bands.

Stone: Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans as we close out?

Masaki: If you like our music, please buy our music and support us. We would like to tour and play enough cities, both in the U.S. and abroad, only we cannot do this without our fans supporting us.

Released on March 29 via Metal Blade Records, Surtur Rising is AMON AMARTH’s eighth studio offering in a winding discography that’s helped shape the very face of epic, Viking-inspired death metal. Named in tribute to Surtur, leader of the fire giants of Muspelheim (“flame land”) and the oldest being in the nine worlds of Norse mythology, the record was recorded, mixed and mastered at Fascination Street Studios Örebro, Sweden with Jens Bogren and bears the striking cover art by Tom Thiel.

The mammoth long-player has been reaping incredible praise from critics nationwide. In a 9/10 review, Blabbermouth compared Surtur Rising to being,  “…bludgeoned by your favorite warhammer. Definitely a contender for this year’s best.” Fearnet called it a, “feast of world-destroying metal on par with the band’s career-defining 2008 release Twilight Of The Thunder God,” while Decibel Magazine commended the band noting, “it’s a pleasure to learn one of metal’s most consistent bands remains as indefatigable as ever.” Pop Matters called the record “…another momentous album for AMON AMARTH, leaving no doubt that they are one of the best Metal bands in the world!,” and Live-Metal agreed: “…one of the strongest, most massively heavy Death Metal bands around…”

In conjunction with Surtur Rising‘s release, AMON AMARTH will make their way to the U.S.  for a near two-week stretch of live dates later this month. SCOTT COLUMBUS – Numerous reports have been made, from credible sources such as the official website for MANOWAR, stating the sad news of Scott Columbus (ex-member/drummer for MANOWAR) passing away on Monday, April 4th, 2011. Scott Columbus was 54 years old. Metal Odyssey extends condolences to the family, friends, ex-band mates and fans of Scott Columbus.

As it is stated on the official website of MANOWAR:

“It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our brother Scott Columbus. Scott Columbus was a rare talent and equally a rare individual. He was a father, a friend and a brother of metal. All of the great moments we spent together in the studio, in our homes and on the road are burnished in our hearts and memories forever. These words are spoken with heavy hearts but we have the comfort of knowing that he is in a good place and at peace. He will never be forgotten. Your family and brothers, Joey, Eric, Karl, Donnie and all at Magic Circle Music”.

My thoughts are: As the past few years (and time) have proven, our Rock, Hard Rock and Heavy Metal heros can never be taken for granted. I am shocked at this news of Scott Columbus passing away and certainly I am not alone. Such a talented drummer that I and countless fans worldwide enjoyed listening to and watching. May Scott Columbus rest in peace.  – Stone

VASTUM “CARNAL LAW” – Death Metal Debut Album Unleashes Wicked, Raw and Old School Savagery

Posted in Death Metal, death metal bands, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 3, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

VASTUM CARNAL LAW – In the vastness of the dark and melancholy world that is my love affair I have for Extreme Metal, one genre that never fails to recruit it’s bands and followers is Death Metal. A new Death Metal band has emerged from California’s San Francisco Bay Area and they are not playing it safe, nor are they carbon copying legends of this savage and torment stricken sound. Carnal Law releases on May 31, 2011, on 20 Buck Spin. Carnal Law is a Death Metal album that should grab ahold of Death Metal loyalists and shake their enraged Metal world apart… it has shook mine and I’m pleading for more.

The paths that Carcass, Death, Autopsy, Cannibal CorpseObituary and Grave (to name a many few) have made for new Death Metal bands to navigate will forever be revered by the Old School. When a band like VASTUM can take the Deathly Metal influence from such legends and fabricate their own vicious sound, style and grooves, then I’m not just listening… I’m breathing a Metal sigh of relief that a new Death Metal band gets it and gets it done. VASTUM exhibits that credible Death Metal persona in their sound, which should make them quite known among the Metal masses in a hurry.

With six songs to sink your Metal scorched ears into on Carnal Law, I only wish there were twelve. Then again, these six songs stack up with such raw Death Metal intensity, that this album more than saturates the inner depths of my Death Metal hungry soul. The dual vocals of Dan and Leila spewing forth Deathly resounding regurgitation, mixes together with extremely memorable riffs and leads, all congealed together with a potently penetrating rhythm section. The Death Metal grooves I hear on Carnal Law thunder along, without the need for over-the-top technical bullshit or over impressive speed. Metal be thy name.

As a Metal bonus, these songs are not annoying Death Metal epics, the Death Metal blitz is done in Old School fashion, without needless passages of unnecessary exquisiteness. There are many melodic guitar moments, which exemplifies the keen awareness that VASTUM has towards making a Death Metal album of songs… and not noise coming from a rented garage. Lyrically tapping into the gray-shades of psychological disparity and yes, death themes, VASTUM are Death Metal students that have studied their Metal craft with merit. VASTUM are ready to share their own Death Metal thesis with all and they are… with Carnal Law.

VASTUM:

Dan – vocals

Kyle – guitar

Leila – vocals & guitar

Luca – bass

RD – drums

ARGUS stormed onto the underground Metal scene with their twin guitar-driven, Doom-tinged, working class Metal sound with a self-recorded demo in early 2007, on John Brenner’s (Revelation/Against the Nature) DIY label, Bland Hand Records. The band was roundly welcomed by the Metal community at home as well as abroad and established its foundation amongst friends/fans within the scene. With this initial momentum, the band created a buzz that was only solidified by their punishing live performances. Their self-titled debut album was released on Shadow Kingdom Records in 2009 receiving praise from media outlets worldwide. The band continued to gain notoriety attracting like-minded fans worldwide who celebrate the genre and its core values of: hard work, discipline and integrity.

Featuring the powerful voice of former Penance vocalist Butch Balich, ARGUS prepares to cement themselves within the Metal archives with their sophomore effort, Boldly Stride the Doomed!

SLEEP – Stoner Metal Legends Announce 2011 Live Dates!

Posted in concerts, doom metal, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , on April 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Following the successful Marijuanaut’s Return tour of September 2010, West Coast Stoner Metal legends SLEEP recently announced three North American dates for 2011. The mini run of dates will include New York City on June 22, Los Angeles on June 26 and an appearance at the Sled Island Music & Arts Festival in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on June 24.

SLEEP 2011 Tour Dates:

6/22/2011 Terminal 5 – New York, NY

6/24/2011 Sled Island Festival – Calgary, AB, Canada

6/26/2011 The Wiltern –  Los Angeles, CA

Said Noisecreep of the band’s last live excursion: “…if the band put any more stacks on the stage, it just might have collapsed.” Rolling Stone Brazil gave the band’s performance a perfect 5 out of 5 rating while Redefine Magazine noted: “SLEEP, despite being broken up for over ten years, seemed like they hadn’t missed a beat — and Holy Mountain never sounded so good in the process. This was the definitive show of the weekend, if not the definitive show of my year.”

Check out live footage of the band’s Denver show last year HERE.

About SLEEP:

SLEEP split in 1997 after two hugely influential albums. Members went on to form OM and High On Fire. Original members Al Cisneros and Matt Pike were joined by drummer Jason Roeder of Neurosis last Fall for a short stint of reunion dates that floored their earliest fans and converted new ones.

The band debuted with 1991’s Volume One album, recorded for San Francisco label Tupelo. Earache Records received the band’s next recordings in the mail as a demo. The label — impressed by SLEEP‘s single-mindedness and unique vision — immediately signed the band and released the tape exactly as it was received. Record stores worldwide have stocked SLEEP’s Holy Mountain from November 1992 to this day.

The band then signed to London Records. Their debut album for the major took the form of one mammoth 63-minute leviathan of a track entitled “Jerusalem.” They resisted the label’s attempts at radio edits and bringing in their own engineer to remix the album in view of “marketability.” London balked at the prospect of promoting what probably still is the most extreme music ever recorded for a major label, consequentially shelving the record and dropping the band.

In addition, SLEEP‘s music has been featured in films by Harmony Korine and Jim Jarmusch.

PAUL – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Releases April 5th, 2011… Some Classic Rock Thoughts…

Posted in classic rock, classic rock music, film scores, metal odyssey, movie soundtracks, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news, soundtracks with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on April 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

PAUL – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack – Any regular visitor to Metal Odyssey knows by now, that I am a life-long admirer of the Electric Light Orchestra and anything that Jeff Lynne has been a part of musically. Once I heard All Over The World by ELO being played at the end of the movie trailer for PAUL, I became instantly psyched out. This ELO classic is track #22 on the PAUL soundtrack. All Over The World was originally released on another movie soundtrack, that goes back more than thirty years ago to 1980. That movie soundtrack is XANADU.

Xanadu – (1980/Jet Records U.K./MCA Records U.S.)

All Over The World is track #4 on side two on the Xandadu soundtrack. Side two has all five songs performed by the Electric Light Orchestra, with track 5 (title track) Xanadu being sung by Olivia Newton-John. Side one of Xanadu has five songs sung by Olivia Newton-John, which include her singing with: Gene Kelly, Cliff Richard and The Tubes.

Um… back to the PAUL – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack… plus a flashback to Nazz

Hello It’s Me by the legendary Todd Rundgren is another Classic Rock blast from the past that is on the PAUL soundtrack. Hello It’s Me was originally released back in 1968, on the debut and self-titled album from nazz. Todd Rundgren was a founding member and lead guitarist of Nazz. (This debut album depicts the lower case “n” in nazz).

nazz – debut/self-titled (1968/SGC Records)

* PAUL – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be released on April 5th, 2011. I’ve seen the record label listed as UMTV and Hip-O Records as well… I don’t know which is correct or if both are correct?

* The film director for PAUL is Greg Mottola.

* Starring in PAUL are: Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and Seth Rogen (voice of Paul).

* The film score for PAUL was created by David Arnold. David Arnold has Independence Day and five James Bond film scores to his credit (among many other works).

Track Listing For PAUL – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack:

01 – Paul Opening Title – David Arnold

02 – Another Girl Another Planet – The Only Ones

03 – Road Trip Number 1 – David Arnold

04 – Just The Two Of Us – Bill Withers & Grover Washington Jr.

05 – Passport – David Arnold

06 – Road Trip Number 2 – David Arnold

KOPEK – ROCKED LIVE & LOUD! Concert Review: The Crocodile Rock Cafe, Allentown, Pennsylvania, March 19th, 2011

Posted in alternative rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, modern rock, Music, rock and roll, rock concerts, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on March 31, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

KOPEK – Through the years (or is that decades?) I’ve always been a believer in the small club setting for seeing a live night of Rock, Hard Rock or Heavy Metal. Most of my greatest experiences of seeing live concerts have been at small clubs. Seeing KOPEK live, on March 19th, 2011, at The Crocodile Rock Cafe in Allentown, Pennsylvania, was no exception to my long list of memorable, small club, Rock experiences. If anything, as I stood there bopping my head up and down to Kopek’s live set, I understood I was watching an electrifying band that I’ve felt all along will be HUGE one day.

As Kopek played through their set of several songs, taken from their insanely addicting debut album White Collar Lies, I had to redirect my view on this band becoming huge one day. Kopek is already HUGE. What was I thinking? Finally seeing Kopek play live was a validation in my believing in this band from day one. Kopek is as blue collar and unique as any of the “greatest” in Rock Music history. If the world of Rock needed a rejuvenation of itself in 2011, then the world of Rock should thank Dublin, Ireland’s very own… Kopek.

I am not bashful in stating that Kopek is a band that only comes around every fifteen years. The “vibe” I love most about Kopek is the “Rock and Roll mystique” they give off through their music and overall style, a mystique legends such as R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Motörhead, Metallica and Nirvana (to name a few) are historically and famously known for. Kopek took this mystique I hear from their Hard Rock sound and style to an entirely different level for me, on this Saturday evening in mid-March of 2011. Seeing and hearing is believing. Kopek’s live set proved to me, that Rock Music history isn’t an open and shut book after all. Kopek is now. Kopek is HUGE.

KOPEK – White Collar Lies (Religion Music/SIN)

Kopek is currently on a massive tour throughout the U.S. and eventually Europe, which runs throughout the course of 2011. If you have never listened to Kopek’s Alt/Modern/Hard Rock debut album White Collar Lies, I strongly suggest you do. Being left out of the Rock Music history loop is not a cool thing to experience.

* On this night of Rock at The Crocodile Rock Cafe, Kopek played alongside Oceans Divide, Egypt Central, Maddam Ink. and the legendary… COLD.

* All the live photos you see here are taken from the talented lens of Metal Odyssey’s staff photographer Tom Coderre. I’d like to say: A Metal job well done Tom!

Daniel Jordan, the lead singer and guitarist for Kopek, gave a tremendous performance live. His almost stationary presence on stage had me realizing to myself, that you don’t need to carry on like a Rock Star to be a real Rock Star. No theatrics. No selfish or plastic image to be seen, while my eyes were affixed on Daniel Jordan on this night. As Daniel broke into the vocals for Fever, it gave me the chills… his vocals are that uniquely amazing for me. As soon as Kopek broke out Love Is Dead, I was in Hard Rock la-la land. Hearing Kopek play this song live was an instant Rockin’ high!

I especially appreciated the moment when Daniel dedicated the song White Collar Lies to the United States Troops that are scattered around the globe, protecting our free societies each and every day. Thank you Daniel for acknowledging and remembering our U.S. service men and women. I told Daniel it was difficult in restraining my urge to jump around and go crazy during their set. Daniel understood the dilemma I went through and he added: keeping it cool is the better rule. Sometimes I just feel like a kid. Metal be thy name.

Brad Kinsella on bass was always aware of the crowd! This is a musician that shows he feels the music he is playing, with his fun and cool on-stage mannerisms. Never pretentious, just legit personified. This is a guy who loves what he does for a living. Brad had the fans up front instantly initiated into his Kopek world… and they were all loving every second of it. I had fun just watching Brad perform… plus he plays a thumping bad-ass bass.

Shane Cooney is not easy to ignore, especially when he was laying down the hard hittin’ beats that made it difficult for me to not move. Shane is another non-egotistical member of this amazing band. As a bonus, there was never a “look-at-me” drum solo to be heard from Shane. This is a drummer who does it the old-fashioned way, keeping it simple, keeping it real.

Daniel and Stone finally meet! After a year of knowing who each other was, Daniel and I were able to exchange conversation about the band, touring, the fans and the night’s show. Daniel is a Rock musician who is proud by all the success and attention that Kopek has received thus far. Kopek deserves every bit of success that comes their way. They are earning it. To say Daniel is happy about Kopek is an understatement. When I asked him if he’s had a good time touring America, Daniel never hesitated to give an emphatic – yes! Daniel eagerly signed for the fans all night long. There was nary a moment, the entire night, when Daniel wasn’t accessible to speak to or hang out with.

Stone finally meets Brad and Shane! As with Daniel, Brad and Shane knew my name, only getting “a face with the name” makes it all the better… and my face is not that pretty either. Brad had nothing but kind words to say about America, the fans, the bands they’ve toured with and the people behind the scenes. Brad is especially pumped up to play at this years Rocklahoma. Shane was the ever polite Rock and Roll drummer. Brad and Shane thanked me for the past promotion of their album on Metal Odyssey. (!) I in turn, thanked Brad and Shane for the music they are making.

Luc Nyhus is a touring guitarist with Kopek. Luc’s presence and guitar playing was strong and confident, while he trekked about the stage. In my Metal opinion, Luc fit right in with Kopek. Off the stage, Daniel, Brad, Shane and Luc got along like a brotherhood. Luc is one big dude, so I’m speculating Kopek has a body guard to watch their backs while on tour too! Luc was a cool and friendly guy to meet as well.

It’s always a thrill, to meet musicians like Kopek that I hold in high regard. Hearing Kopek thank me (!) for writing cool stuff about them this past year will forever be remembered by me. Their understanding of how it “gets done” in todays record industry, along with their friendliness, work ethic, grueling tour schedule and of course, musicianship is above admirable. It’s even a more immense thrill to realize that Kopek are fantastically good guys, they know where they came from and where they are going… which is straight to the top.

THE TREWS – “Hope & Ruin” Releases April 12th, 2011! Track Listing, Album Art and Info…

Posted in alternative rock, alternative rock bands, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, hard rock bands, metal odyssey, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 29, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

“Big riffs, bigger hooks, anthemic choruses – Canadian Alt-Rockers The Trews bring all of that and more” – Guitar Edge Magazine

THE TREWS’ fourth full-length studio album, Hope & Ruin, due out on The Trews Records on April 12, is a level-raising evolution for the Toronto-based rock band with two gold records, 10 top-10 singles and 800-plus concerts logged. After wrapping up the first leg of touring for 2009’s  Acoustic – Friends & Total Strangers retrospective, The Trews found themselves with time off and a blank canvas in front of them for the first time in years. The band decided to retreat to Tragically Hip’s fabled Bathhouse Studio’s, which is an old converted lake house just outside of Kingston, Ontario.

Recorded live-off-the-floor, they captured lightning in a bottle, resulting in a sound that is raw, electric and igniting. Of course, the ripping rockers that have made front man Colin MacDonald; his brother, guitarist John-Angus; their cousin, drummer Sean Dalton; and long-time friend, bassist Jack Syperek one of Canada’s top live acts are still present with the heavy “The World I Know,” unrelenting “Misery Loves Company” and pummeling “People of the Deer.”

We haven’t forgotten how to rock, but there’s new ground being covered,” says Colin. The Trews have never made an album in the manner in which they recorded Hope & Ruin, and it’s an album they never could’ve made before now. There’s a certain connection, comfort and intuition that’s needed to write and record in such an off-the-cuff, inspired manner. And that takes years to develop.

As the “Hope & Ruin” single continues to climb up the Active Rock charts in The Trews native Canada (currently at #7), the band is receiving accolades from around the globe. Performer Magazine here in the U.S. claims that “The Trews are, without a doubt, the greatest rock band of their generation” and upon their departure from their Australian tour  this month, famous native and rock affectionado Russell Crowe tweeted “Bon Voyage @thetrews hope you make it back to Australia soon. They came, they saw, they rocked”

The Trews will be touring the U.S. this Spring.

Hope & Ruin Track Listing:

Misery Loves Company

One By One

People of the Deer

Stay With Me

Hope & Ruin

If You Wanna Start Again

The World I Know

Dreaming Man

I’ll Find Someone Who Will

Love Is The Real Thing

Burned

You Gotta Let Me In

* I’ve listened to One By One, a song currently streaming from Hope & Ruin several times over. The Alternative Rock sound blended with a relevant Classic Rock feel and vibe, makes One By One erupt with all things fabulous about quality songwriting, memorable lyrics and guitar driven Rock Music. I’m really looking forward to landing my ears into this entire new album from The Trews.

THE HAUNTED “UNSEEN” – Releases March 29th 2011 In U.S.!

Posted in Death Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, melodic death metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 28, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THE HAUNTED – Releasing on March 29th, 2011, via Century Media Records, is the seventh studio album, Unseen, from Sweden’s very own… The Haunted. I’m looking forward to getting my ears into this new album from The Haunted. While earlier reviews on Unseen have not been very positive or mixed, the experimental and detoured direction of the Metal that The Haunted have taken seems to have alienated some. From what has been written thus far from other reviews I’ve read, a Sludge Metal sound with many clean vocal moments from Peter Dolving are heard on Unseen.

I’ll keep an “open Metal mind” and deliver a review for Unseen in the near future. If you’ve never checked out any album from The Haunted, you must… this is a Metal band that goes back to 1996 with their debut/self titled album releasing in 1998.

THE HAUNTED:

Peter Dolving – vocals

Anders Björler – lead guitar

Patrik Jensen – rhythm guitar

Jonas Björler – bass

Per Möller Jensen – drums

Track Listing For UNSEEN:

Never Better

No Ghost

Catch 22

Disappear

Motionless

Unseen

The Skull

Ocean Park

The City

Them

All Ends Well

Done

My “all-time” favorite song from The Haunted is The Cynic, from their fifth studio album released back in 2006 – The Dead Eye. Jonas Björler on bass just makes The Cynic sound so melancholy and creepy… it’s right up my Metal alley. Metal truth be told, The Dead Eye is Heavy stuff, I recommend The Dead Eye to all Metal fans across the globe. Peter Dolving on vocals can sing as vicious as any in the world of Metal, while giving way to those tempered down moments when the song dictates. Another Metal truth be told, I’ve never met an album from The Haunted that I didn’t like.
