Wanna See My TRIUMPH “Stages” Double Live Album I Bought? It’s Really Cool…

TRIUMPH Stages – Double Live Album (Front Cover)

TRIUMPH – Digging through bins of used vinyl gives me an adrenaline rush like no other. I love it. This past Friday (May 11th) I went to an antiques mall and headed straight to the used records. The dealer  that stocks these used records is a nice guy and from my experience talking to him, he knows about the history of Rock ‘N Roll. Everything from Buddy Holly to Iron Maiden picture discs are for sale from this dealer and his inventory is enormous. Hundreds of 45’s, cassettes, CD’s and even some 8-tracks are also available here.

As I stared gleefully at a Samantha Fox picture disc, from the corner of my eye I saw a bin of albums that gave me that special vibe. No, I didn’t buy the Samantha Fox picture disc; I probably would have if it was a buck or two. Alright, back to that bin of special vibes. There was (just about) every album from Krokus in it; only the condition of the albums were nasty. Heavy Metal albums aren’t that abundant from this dealer and it’s probably due to the steady foot traffic of other collectors that I’ve seen there… all looking for the heavy stuff.

TRIUMPH Stages – (Gatefold)

As I pulled this Triumph album from this magic bin of vinyl, I actually began to mutter aloud: Triumph! Stages! Double Vinyl! As I admired the excellent condition of the album jacket, I opened up the gatefold and knew I was holding a gem. The wear on this album jacket is normal and the original gloss is still, for the most part, ever-present. Both albums have played just fine and that’s the icing on the Metal cake for me! This Triumph double live album cost me $6 (U.S.) and I was more than happy to pay it.

TRIUMPH Stages was released back in 1985, on MCA Records. This album definitely belongs in my collection, especially on vinyl. From Classic Rock to Heavy Metal fans, Triumph has a widespread appeal with their fantastic catalog of albums. Stages makes for a great start to new Triumph fans, lending as both a live and greatest hits album. This album ROCKS like there is no tomorrow and I couldn’t be more honest than that.

TRIUMPH Stages – (Back Cover)

At the top of this back cover, in red lettering reads: “Recorded in various cities on the Allied Forces, Never Surrender and Thunder Seven Tours, 1981 to 1985.”

As a surprise bonus to this purchase; the original Triumph Stages merchandise sheet was inside one of the record sleeves! This sheet is in impeccable condition and makes for a Rockin’ conversation item.

An Open Letter To All Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Legends

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , on May 14, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

I am writing this open letter to all Hard Rock & Heavy Metal legends for legitimate reasons. 1. I respect any legend of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal; these said “legends” are those who have pioneered, innovated and paved the way for our beloved Heavy Music to exist in 2012.. 2. I want these said legends to understand that this fan is fed up with some of these legends forgetting their roots.

Broadway albums. Humorous books on personal health. Scripted Reality Television Shows. Lulu. Judging a Pop-crap, televised singing contest. Performing on the same Pop-crap, televised singing contest; one which has discovered only one legitimate Rock/Hard Rock superstar known as Chris Daughtry. These legends know who they are. It appears that once you’ve been elevated to Hollywood superstar status, the old school roots are no longer looked upon as anything more than a lost chapter in these legends autobiographies.

We’re not talking about a Metal legend making a Rock album here or creating fine art, nor is this about my not liking artistic diversity; instead, this is about decisions that are being made by prominent figures in Heavy Music, which essentially affect the long-standing integrity of their being… real.

There are fans out there that do give a shit. I’m one of them. It’s just like being a pro athlete; when is enough suitcases of millions enough? Legends of Heavy Music must understand: you don’t have to accept every lame-ass and mainstream offer that comes your way. These same legends of Heavy Music that used to write, sing and preach about “not taking any bullshit from the man” are the same ones who are being manipulated by the man today. That “man” is the almighty Hollywood dollar and mainstream popularity contest.

_______________________________

Whatever happened to keeping it real? Staying true? Sure, I will write about some mellow albums here on Metal Odyssey once in a great while… only they are not so far out of the realm that it causes me embarrassment. These legends have to understand, there are fans out there who are not going to like everything you stamp your name on. That’s it. That’s reality.

I’ve come to the realization, that there is enormous truth about forgetting where you came from. I’ll never forget where I came from. Hell no. I turn down requests to review Pop albums on a weekly basis. Why? I’m keeping it F’n real; to both myself and the visitors to Metal Odyssey. I’ll acknowledge when a Pop legend passes away, I feel it’s the right thing to do. I do listen to a cornucopia of music. Still, I’m not jumping onto every popular bandwagon that chugs into town either, unlike some of these legends are doing.

In the end, is it any of my F’n business as to what any Legend of Heavy Music does with their respective fame and fortune? No and yes. No, due to this is a free society in America and capitalism reigns. Each man and woman for themselves. Yes, cause I’ve been suckered after decades of thinking that some of these legends were “really” street and against the same plastic people they are now making a fortune with. Make no mistake, there are countless Heavy Music legends out there that are keeping it real and won’t jump at every dumb-ass offer that’s left on their voice mail.

_______________________________

They don’t make them like Cronos of Venom anymore. You’d never see that legend cow-tow to any moron who doesn’t give a rats ass about Metal. The morons are out there looking for our Heavy Music legends, to make millions on their “name” (a means to an end) and haven’t a clue about Hard Rock or Heavy Metal history.

It’s just like the iconic AC/DC song: MONEY TALKS. It’s like the legendary TESTAMENT song: Practice What You Preach. In this case, it’s practice what you used to preach. Just as the legendary Dee Snider of Twisted Sister once riveted my Metal soul with We’re Not Gonna Take It… well… I’m not taking it. I’m also not buying it. Metal be thy name.

LONG LIVE KEEPING HARD ROCK & METAL REAL.

ROYAL THUNDER “CVI” – Unreal Is The Word And This Heavy Album MUST Be Heard!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal with tags , , , , , , on May 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ROYAL THUNDER – Ann Wilson of Heart. (the late) Janis Joplin. Melissa Etheridge. Bonnie Raitt. Joan Jett. Mlny Parsonz. These women of Rock all have one essential talent in common; they all sing from the heart and Rock ‘N Roll soul, while singing with believable passion. I also revere each of their voices too. Who is Mlny Parsonz your asking? Mlny is the vocalist and bassist for Royal Thunder. Mlny and Royal Thunder will be bigger than they probably ever fathomed… so they better get used to the accolades that will be coming their way.

I seriously believe a band like Royal Thunder only comes around every several years. Their debut full-length album, CVI, is easily one of the best albums I’ve listened to in years; crossing all Rock genres. Royal Thunder’s sound weaves Hard Rock, Metal, some psychedelia and meaty Stoner Metal with a thunderous vibe of Classic Rock. If there is that one can’t miss band you need to catch onto in 2012, it’s Royal Thunder; and that’s a sincere fact I am delivering to you.

Lyrically personal, emotional and dark, the songs on CVI are all equally sensational; while both the vocals of Mlny and the music are an astonishing match. If there is one legendary vocalist that Mlny is channeling in, that legend would be Janis Joplin. Regardless of comparisons, Mlny’s vocals are as refreshingly new like a long-awaited rain shower, during a late Summer’s drought.

_______________________________

The band plays their music with a driving passion as well, again, both vocals and music compliment each other on CVI and it’s a thrill a second to listen to. With a sonic retrospective flair being echoed throughout CVI, Royal Thunder still uncannily comes across as relevant with nary a remote hint of pretension. Even though Royal Thunder hasn’t invented the Rock ‘N Roll wheel, they didn’t try to reinvent it either on CVI; and that’s something many other up and coming bands should take note of.

Overall and (most importantly) consistently memorable throughout, CVI comes musically packaged as completeSleeping Witch and the opening track Parsonz Curse offer up substantial riffs and enough heavy texture to make any warm-blooded Metalhead jump for Metal joy. Even when Mlny and band tone things down during songs such as South Of Somewhere and Minus, they’re still heavy with the atmosphere of what’s to come next and what they’re all about.

I am very excited about Royal Thunder and their new album CVI; I imagine it obviously shows. What I’m also excited about is this band (albeit a conscientious maneuver or not) has connected the dots of Heavy Metal, Rock and Hard Rock’s past and written songs that bubbles over with admirably heavy substance in 2012. In a world of fake mainstream Rock and Pop crap that suffocates and kidnaps our youth and misinformed, real talent will always surface to the top and save us all, the crème de la crème which in this instance is… Royal Thunder.

ROYAL THUNDER:

Mlny Parsonz – bass & vocals

Josh Weaver – lead guitar

Lee Smith – drums

Josh Coleman – rhythm guitar

CVI release dates: May 22 (U.S.), May 28 (UK), June 1 (Ger/Benelux) and June 4 (World). CVI will be available on CD and 2xLP and of course digital, via Relapse Records.

METAL ODYSSEY’S MOTHER’S DAY SONGS & ALBUMS TO ROCK YOU! 2012 EDITION!

Posted in classic rock, country music, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, holiday songs, holidays, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on May 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

MOTHER’S DAY 2012 – Yes, Mother’s Day is upon us. Mothers Rock. On May 13th, 2012, the U.S. will be celebrating Mothers Day. There are different dates for Mothers Day, depending on where you live in the world. I hope you all can give your mother a big hug and thank you on this special day. I’ll be blowing a kiss to the sky this Mother’s Day, to my mother up in heaven.

While compiling this groovy list of mother songs and albums; my research kinda went astray. It happens. You see, I’m not too sure if all of these choices on this list will actually… Rock. Some actually make me laugh just looking at the covers. Sorry, that’s just me, I do tend to have a sense of Metal humor. A couple of albums below came from Metal Odyssey visitor’s suggestions: Queen and Every Mother’s Nightmare.

Hopefully this list of mother songs and albums will provide a definitive starting point for your Mother Album Collection. If not, maybe you can share a laugh or two with me. If you find this list boring, by all means you can go watch an ABBA concert DVD instead and get psyched-out by some live Dancing Queen. Metal be thy name.

Queen – A Day At The Races

Yes, this Queen album Rocks! Tie Your Mother Down is the opening track too. This album comes highly recommended by Stone.

Mum’s The Word – 60 Fabulous Songs Your Mother Should Know

Um, this is a “2 CD set” as well. What if your mother doesn’t know these songs? Then what?

Mother’s Finest –  The Very Best Of – Not Yer Mother’s Funk

Mother’s Finest for all intents and Metal purposes… ROCKS.

Within Temptation – Mother Earth

Within Temptation ROCKS. ‘Nuff said.

Mother Mother – Oh My

Uh… I have absolutely, positively no idea. It’s an album though.

Every Mother’s Nightmare – (self titled)

This band and their 1990 debut album… ROCKS.

Country Songs For Mother’s Day

I doubt there are any Rockin’ kick-ass songs on this one. Then again, you just never know.

Mama’s Hand – Bluegrass And Mountain Songs About Mother

Whoa! I don’t know which is funnier! The title of “Mama’s Hand” or the picture on this album cover! My interpretation of this album’s picture: Mama blew a nasty cheese fart and her daughter is not amused.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Mother’s Milk

ATTENTION: Red Hot Chili Peppers… ROCK! This album is highly recommended by Stone.

Robert Gass & On Wings Of Song – Ancient Mother

I am leaning towards this being a picture of an ancient fertility statue? I think? I have no idea what the music sounds like on this album. Maybe chanting? I did research some: Robert Gass is a classically trained musician and he directs the vocal group On Wings Of Song.

Well, that concludes the 2012 edition of Metal Odyssey’s Mother’s Day Songs & Albums To ROCK YOU! Thank you for visiting and sticking around to the end. Happy Mother’s Day to all you cool mothers out there.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Saturday, May 5th, 2012

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on May 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Back at the beginning of the year, I purchased Revelator; the debut from Tedeschi Trucks Band. This is a CD that I found myself plopping into the car’s player and letting the Rock ‘N Roll from this exquisite band soar. Derek Trucks is simply put, a wow guitarist. Susan Tedeschi is simply put, a wow vocalist.

Fabulous songs and so many tones and rhythms happening from a vast assembly of musicians; that it’s a whirlwind of musical bliss. Anyone unfamiliar with Susan Tedeschi should think: Sheryl Crow. Fans of so many Rock genres can get a kick out of what Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have accomplished with their band here. Quality personified.

It was sad to hear that Adam Yauch passed away on Friday, May 4th. A founding member of the Beastie Boys is no longer around and he left way too young. Metal Odyssey expresses condolences to the family, bandmates, friends and fans of Adam Yauch.

An album I have caught onto this past week is: Michael Thompson Band – Future Past. This potent dose of AOR and Melodic Hard Rock was released back on February 24th of this year, via Frontiers Records. Michael Thompson is superb on guitar and keyboards. Michael Thompson has been a name in the world of Rock and Pop since the late 80’s, with a who’s who list of legendary celebrities he has played for; from Michael Jackson and Celine Dion to Vince Neil.

Vocalist Larry King (no, not the dude who retired from CNN) has an amazing voice. A trademark AOR/Melodic Rock voice. My ears surely dig how he sings these songs on Future Past. I’ve enjoyed listening to Future Past so much, I am hoping Michael Thompson will create more studio albums with Larry King. Good stuff. I also hope to write more about this album in the near future.

I don’t know about you, yet I am blown away by the album artwork of the new Municipal Waste album cover for The Fatal Feast. Justin Osbourn of Slasher Design created this fantastic cover. If Metal Odyssey adds a new award category of album artwork for the “Best Of” year-end lists; The Fatal Feast will be a muscular Metal contender! Add this one to my list of Metal albums I want to write more about… soon.

Municipal Waste – The Fatal Feast was released back on April 10th of this year, via Nuclear Blast America.

Okay. Those are my Metal and Rock ‘N Roll thoughts for Saturday, May 5th, 2012. Comment on them please! The Metal Odyssey boss said I need to draw more Metal commentary; otherwise I will be yelled at badly. Have a Rockin’ and cool Metal weekend. Also… If you still rent VHS tapes… “be kind and rewind.”

Rest In Peace, Adam Yauch. 1964 – 2012

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 29, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

The legendary Lita Ford is returning once again with another “new” studio album. Living Like A Runaway will be released in North America on June 19th, 2012, via SPV/Steamhammer. Let’s all hope it’s not anywhere near like her last (2009) studio album: Wicked Wonderland. Ouch.

I haven’t gone looking for or heard any samples of Lita’s new album. The album cover alone definitely gives me a positive Rockin’ impression. There’s something mysteriously cool about railroad tracks on an album cover. The “highway theme” on album covers has been done far too often over the years. Railroad tracks, well, they… Rock.

From what I’ve gathered, the 2 – CD Live & Inspired from Godsmack will be released on May 15th, 2012, via Universal Republic. I dig Godsmack. Their last album, The Oracle, kicked my ass.

There was this moment I vividly recall; I was traveling by mule through the far reaches of the Northern Connecticut woods, when I was confronted by an elder and very wise Metalhead troll. My journey was abruptly stopped so he could tell me: “Stone, you just cannot deny the heavy music of them Godsmack dudes.”

Well, that’s it. Those are my Metal and Rock ‘N Roll thoughts for Sunday, April 29th, 2012. Not many, still, a couple of ’em for you to ponder and comment about. Metal be thy name.

URIAH HEEP “Live In Armenia” – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

URIAH HEEP – Playing live on hired equipment, with technical problems to overcome, didn’t prevent Rock/Hard Rock legends URIAH HEEP from putting on an amazing live show; before thousands of enthusiastic fans in Armenia. This concert proved to be the first time URIAH HEEP played in Armenia… 40 years in the making! Just my hearing the excited fans in the background, singing along to these ultra classic URIAH HEEP songs, gives me the chills.

I get these Rock ‘N Roll chills for the simple fact; that URIAH HEEP is still around and playing their songs for the world! Guitarist and founding member Mick Box has kept his URIAH HEEP brand of smokin’ hot Hard Rock proudly upright; regardless of lineup changes over the decades. Live In Armenia is a celebration of URIAH HEEP Rock ‘N Roll and exemplifies just how timeless the sounds and songs of URIAH HEEP truly are.

I can’t get over how fine this live recording sounds. Both band and Bernie Shaw’s vocals sound excellent to my ears and I couldn’t say it any better than that. Easy Livin’, Sunrise and Angels Walk With You are my top three songs, however, as with so many Classic Rock bands, picking favorite songs is not a perfect science for me. I love listening to the guitar of Mick Box, the vocals of Bernie Shaw and the keyboards of Phil Lanzon. I love it all, man.Whoa, I do.

Longtime URIAH HEEP fans, Classic Rock/Rock/Hard Rock fans and any fan of damn righteous Rock ‘N Roll should own Live In Armenia. Metal be thy name, they should. This double CD was released on Frontiers Records, back on September 23rd, 2011. Live In Armenia was originally released with a companion DVD of this Concert as well.

MY DYNAMITE – 5 Reasons To Buy This Solid Rockin’ Debut / ST Album Showcasing These Australian Rockers

Posted in blues rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, Music, rock albums, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news, southern rock with tags , , , , , on April 23, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

MY DYNAMITE – Releasing on June 19th, 2012, is the debut and self-titled album from Australia’s My Dynamite. Listenable Records has signed a dandy Rock ‘N Roll band here. My Dynamite is a very talented Rock band you should know about and their debut album you should strongly consider buying this Summer, I’ll tell you why:

01. – Hot Rockin’. No, I’m not talking about the fabulously riveting Judas Priest song, I’m talking about this entire My Dynamite album. Honestly, from start to finish, My Dynamite has given the world ten songs to party to or just kick back and enjoy the moment to. This album can turn a shit day into an easy livin’ one, in under 30 seconds. It happened for me already.

02. – My Dynamite may sound like The Black Crowes and don’t sound like ABBA, while lead singer Pat Carmody may sound like Chris Robinson; still My Dynamite is an original from Down Under and obviously know the true meaning of Rock Steady. They mix Southern Rock, Blues Rock and 70’s Party Rock with a commendable and all-encompassing Classic Rock feel and vibe. It all sounds like Rock ‘N Roll hallelujah to me.

03. – My Dynamite have “written songs that express what is going on in their personal lives directly” and it comes across just so. This album is as blue-collar as they come, with a flair for the backwoods and small town Rock ‘N Roll spirit; a spirited sound which comes at me from every turn.

_______________________________

04. – This cool band plays feel-good Rock ‘N Roll for sure and those good-times vibrations are spilling out from these songs like a waterfall. Pat Carmody’s vocals and harmonica on Take It Or Leave It sends me back to those days when technology didn’t rule my every move and that alone is good-times for me.

05. – What this debut album from My Dynamite will give you, is that slick Rock ‘N Roll head-slap that everyone needs once in a while. No blanket of Modern Hard Rock sound. No fancy gimmicks or tricks. No Alternative or Progressive leanings. No extremes. Just straight-up Rock that has tons of Roll is what My Dynamite delivers and this debut from them is a Rockin’ knock-out punch.

Now… kick your pissed-off and constipated attitude out the door… and get yourself some My Dynamite.

MY DYNAMITE:

Patrick Carmody – Lead Vocals

Jorge Balas – Guitar

Travis Fraser – Bass

Simon Aarons – Drums

Benny Wolf – Guitar

MY DYNAMITE – Track Listing:

Take It Or Leave It

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Saturday, April 21st, 2012

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 21, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

This past week the Rock ‘N Roll world had to sadly say goodbye to Rock ‘N Roll icon Dick Clark, along with Greg Ham (multi-instrumentalist -Men At Work) and Brian Jack (vocalist , guitarist – Child’s Play). That’s three too many. May these gentlemen of Rock ‘N Roll rest in peace. Metal Odyssey expresses heartfelt condolences to each of their families, friends and fans.

Dick Clark was and forever will be a prolific Rock ‘N Roll legend. I, like tens of millions of other Rock fans, grew up with Dick Clark. I remember watching and enjoying American Bandstand as a young lad. Just watching the people dance was fun for me, back then. It will forever be “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Years Eve” for me. That “other dude” that has been hosting it will NEVER be Dick Clark.

I cannot believe my eyes! Well, that’s what I was thinking recently, when I walked into the CD aisles of my nearest Best Buy. The shelves were stocked. Really stocked. It felt like the clock turned back a full decade! Older and new releases galore! Tons of independent labels too. Hopefully this is a trend. I hope Best Buy, along with other large retailers, see that there still is a widespread and hungry market for the dinosaur we all call… the CD.

Look for a really, really, cool interview to surface here on Metal Odyssey soon. Hint: It’s an interview with the lead singer/guitarist of a… Metal band. A kick-ass Metal band too. This interview will simultaneously launch on another world known and widely respected website too! Stay tuned for more details!

Yes, I recently found another KISS Kollectible! The photo at the top of this post tells all! It’s a 1998 KISS The Second Coming tour book. There are 36 full-color pages in all and it measures 8″ x 7.5″. This tour book documents the #1 tour of 1996-1997 and that was… KISS. That is Ace Frehley and Peter Criss on the cover of this tour book too! All four original members of KISS were together for this tour.

There is plenty of KISS Kisstory, concert photos, anecdotes and merchandise offers in this tour book to put a smile on the face of any KISS fanatic. I know it put a smile on my face; especially since I only paid $2 (U.S.) for this little KISS gem. Yup, I discovered this KISS Kollectible at an antiques mall and was amazed at both its incredible condition and price.

Jimmy Ronnie – guitarist, founding member of IRON CLAW

IRON CLAW – With new vocalist Gary Hair, IRON CLAW are busy recording new material and playing live. One new song that has been made public recently is Final Hour and it’s a Hard Rockin’ stomper! Gary Hair sings the daylights out of Final Hour and whoa! I am absolutely looking forward to IRON CLAW’s follow-up to 2011’s A Different Game (released on Ripple Music).

Guitarist Jimmy Ronnie shreds and his guitar playing on Final Hour is a showstopper! This song must be played at high volume, there is no other option. Gee, do I dig this new IRON CLAW song? My answer is simple: Metal be thy name, I do.

KISS – Hot Wheels KISS “Destroyer” Tour Hauler: I Bought Myself One!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, rock and roll memorabilia, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 16, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KISS – Being a KISS fan (usually) means that the lure and hunt for this iconic band’s memorabilia is real and fun. I’ll only buy KISS memorabilia that I can afford and I’ve even passed over many “smaller” items these past several years. Nonetheless, my KISS Kollection will always have a piece added to it from time to time. Just this morning, I bought another kool KISS kollectible. It’s the recently released: KISS Hot Wheels Tour Hauler.

The artwork from the 1976 KISS “Destroyer” album is on the side of this hauler, complete with the classic KISS logo. The top of the hauler has the klassic KISS (band member) symbols. I’m going to keep it in its original cardboard packaging and display it as is. I feel, Hot Wheels did an amazing job in making this KISS Tour Hauler look super sharp.

Over the last couple of months, I have seen and passed over buying this KISS gem. (I am a frugal Mealhead). Finally, when I walked past this KISS Tour Hauler at my local Super Walmart this morning, the urge to own it became too damn intense for me to resist. The front of the box reads “8+”, so I guess I’m old enough to own it. I paid $17.97 (U.S.) for this piece of KISStory and that’s a ton cheaper than it costs to fill my gas tank today. Metal be thy name.

The Greatest Moments Of Heavy Metal History – As Told By The Musicians Who Create, Play And Live It

Posted in classic metal, classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on April 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Everyone has their own opinion, as to what they consider was/is the “greatest moment” of Heavy Metal history. I have mine and it is Quiet Riot creating and achieving the first #1 Heavy Metal album, Metal Health, to reign on the Billboard album charts. This was 1983 and I remember it all so vividly. To have a Heavy Metal band represent us Metalhead fans this way, was truly a profound moment… for me. No other Heavy Metal album before Metal Health went to #1. Amazing.

The  world knew then… that Heavy Metal was forever accessible within the mammoth antagonistic world known as… the mainstream. Yes, Heavy Metal has and will forever rule the underground, only Quiet Riot made certain that the mainstream and its album charts would never be the same again.

A short time ago, I contacted several world known musicians who are making a living by creating and playing our beloved Heavy Metal. I posed the same question to each musician: “What do you consider is/as the “greatest moment” in Heavy Metal history and why?” As you shall read below, their answers are all unique and makes for some downright fun Heavy Metal discussion!

Without question, these talented and admirable musicians are forever historically part of Heavy Metal. They live for Heavy Metal. They are continuously contributing to our beloved genre with blood, sweat and tears. I thank them all for it. I also thank each musician below for taking the time, from their busy schedules, to participate in this feature on Heavy Metal. Each and every one of ’em… ROCKS! Hell yes, they do.

Louis St. August of MASS –

“Very tough question but for me I would have to say it was when I started to see some of my favorite Rock Gods appear on Television. At ten years old I would sneak downstairs and stay up to one in the morning and watch “Don Kirshners Rock Hour” in the early seventies and catch the likes of Ted Nugent, T.Rex, Grand Funk Railroad, Brownsville Station and KISS.

Then it was The Midnight special with Black Oak Arkansas, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick and Aerosmith. The eighties brought us “Headbangers Ball” to MTV with Ratt, Motely Crue, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Whitesnake, Dio, etc..

Great time and memories! Simply my favorite era in Heavy Metal History!”

“The greatest “personal” moment for me in Metal history was hearing the opening bars of ‘Burn’ by Deep Purple for the first time in ’74 and the subsequent onslaught of the songs on that album. It had a huge effect on me. Very close to that would be the unbelievable ‘comeback’ by AC/DC following Bon Scott’s death. Who saw ‘Back in Black’ coming? Not me!”

AC Alexander of LIZZY BORDEN

“I would consider one of the greatest moments in Heavy Metal history to be the addition of distortion/overdrive to amplifiers. It is one of the underlying connections between every Metal/Rock band. Think about some of the biggest riffs ever written in this genre, how would they sound without it?”

Gordon Brown – (ex) IRON CLAW & Solo Artist

“I’ve pondered this for quite some time now and there are so many things I could say, however, there can be only one really and it’s the formation of Cream. They led the way for all those who wanted to open their musical minds and all of the bands that followed did exactly that.”

BOBBY K of 13 –

“Stone, Great question! Hmm… I gave it some serious thought and the one thing that keeps poppin in my head is the fact that Black Sabbath had the balls to record that…”Devils Chord” and I believe it is a diminished 5th minor chord as in the opening to the song Black Sabbath. That chord paved the way for Metal!”

From what I’m to understand, all the great composers ie…Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven avoided playing that chord in fear of being labeled a Heretic!  Hence we have what the Bible Thumpers call…The Devils Music…Horns Up!!   Oh yea….and MC5 for saying live “Kick out the jams Mother Fukkerz!”  Go figure, a Detroit Band pulled that one off!”

“Let’s say the 80s was the greatest moment because that’s when all of the great Metal legends were putting out awesome timeless records. I was born around that time and I wasn’t there, so I wish I was in a part of the scene to witness it.”

TRIXTER “New Audio Machine” – 100% ROCKS! TRIXTER IS BACK!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

TRIXTER – After reuniting back in 2007, the original lineup of TRIXTER have performed at Rocklahoma (2008) and the 2010 M3 Rock Festival, (to name a couple), therefore they have stayed relevant and in the scene in recent years. The last studio album from New Jersey’s TRIXTER was Hear!, released back in 1992 on MCA Records. It’s been a long time for patient fans of TRIXTER to finally sink their Hard Rockin’ ears into a new studio album from this band… the  wait is over!

New Audio Machine will be released on April 20th (Europe) and April 24th (North America) on Frontiers Records. For longtime fans of TRIXTER, this new album has been well worth the wait! This is the second time this week I will state: Sound the Hard Rock bells of glory, tell your children this story and open the flood gates to AOR & Melodic Hard Rock euphoria! With both the new TYKETTO and TRIXTER albums crossing my path this week, I feel like I’ve hit the Melodic Hard Rock lottery.

(One of) my favorite tracks on New Audio Machine is Physical Attraction. The Arena Rock vibes overflow from this entire album, only Physical Attraction just turns up the psyche-out meter to a combustion level for me. With songs like Get On It and Ride, I fully realize that TRIXTER has tapped into their gold selling past and made certain to make a song that resonates both relevancy and old school Hard Rockin’ glory.

I’m very impressed by each and every song on New Audio Machine. Forget about any “instantly memorable song” here. This entire album is instantly memorable. This new album from TRIXTER should be marketed as a Hard Rock & Good Times Companion. Lead vocalist Peter Loran sounds reborn. The entire band plays like a Hard Rock mission statement that reads: “We shall ROCK your faces off and you shall beg for more!”

Yes, I am begging for more. The all-inclusive Melodic Hard Rock vibes and power that is generated from this album comes across very real to me. Big guitar riffs, leads and solos ablaze throughout this album. Psche-you-out chorus abounds from every turn. A booming rhythm section. An all-encompassing blanket of super-charged Hard Rock bliss is thrown upon me from New Audio Machine.

If you’re a TRIXTER fan, get ready to celebrate or keep that celebration going for this superb comeback album. For other fans of Melodic Hard Rock, Classic Rock and AOR… don’t make the foolish mistake of passing over New Audio Machine. As TRIXTER puts it best: “Rock ‘N Roll will save your soul.” My mission is done here now. The rest is up to you… just remember… TRIXTER IS BACK!!

Metal be thy name.

TYKETTO – Triumphs With Comeback Album “DIG IN DEEP”

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, heavy metal news, melodic hard rock, melodic rock, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

TYKETTO – While staying relevant in recent time by performing in some of the worlds most notable Heavy Rock Festivals (Sweden Rock Festival, Download, Firefest and Hard Rock Hell to name a few) TYKETTO realized their fans were still out there and a new studio album was in order. Nearly two decades since their last studio album (1995’s ShineDig In Deep will be released on April 20th (Europe) and April 24th (North America) via Frontiers Records.

What’s that I hear? As I stopped writing this review, I peered out my office window to see what all the hoopla was outside. I noticed AOR, Melodic Rock, Hard Rock and Classic Rock fans dancing in the street, with their arms stretched out to the sun-filled sky. Yes, TYKETTO is back baby… and the Melodic Rockin’ ride you’ll hear on Dig In Deep is an exclamation point on this band’s musical career. When any 80’s or 90’s Heavy Rock band wants to make a comeback again, they should be required to listen to Dig In Deep.

Are you looking for that new Hard Rock album that seamlessly flows from one song to the next, while never letting up on the ROCK that makes your soul ROLL? Dig In Deep. Have you been yearning to hear real Hard Rock vocals once again, you know, that are not sugar-coated with the carbon-copy and computer enhanced Modern Hard Rock tones? Hello, Danny Vaughn.

Let’s talk guitar. Hard Rock guitar that’s both melodic and riff-tastic. Did I mention uncontrollably memorable too? Step in, Brooke St. James. Trust me my Hard Rock brethren… TYKETTO is back, baby. Sound the Hard Rock bells of glory, tell your children this story and open the flood gates to AOR & Melodic Hard Rock euphoria, cause TYKETTO has conquered the status quo and kicked the shit out of the Melodic Hard Rock doldrums with Dig In Deep.

Rhythm section? Jimi Kennedy (bass & backing vocals) and Michael Clayton (drums) are the thunderbolt and drumfire, respectively, on this amazingly habit-forming album of melodically driven songs. Hey, I just realized, there is a band out there that does give a shit about creating the complete album of songs still. They call themselves TYKETTO, by the way. Lead single? Screw that. Try this on for size: lead album. It’s called Dig In Deep.

By the time I caught my breath, after God knows how many listen throughs of Dig In Deep I joyously endured, the realization that TYKETTO has written and recorded once again, resulting in these eleven songs, made me feel like I’ve been beamed up to Happyville U.S.A. where the beers are always free and mp3’s don’t exist. A candidate for Comeback Album Of The Year”. Hard Rock as my witness and Metal be thy name.

What’s my favorite song on Dig In Deep? It isn’t This Is How We Say Goodbye. Ballads still suck most of the time in Stone’s world. This ballad doesn’t close out Dig In Deep on a high note. Nonetheless, a finely written song that will probably make someone cry out there. Whaaaaaa! The title track, Faithless and Sound Off are my three choice-cuts on this album of choice cuts… and this new TYKETTO album has (minus that last ballad) thoroughly ROCKED MY ASS OFF.

Excuse me now… as I head out to the street to join in with the hoopla…

DIG IN DEEP – Track Listing:

Here’s Hoping It Hurts

The Fight Left In Me

SAVATAGE ‘Hall Of The Mountain King’ – Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day

Posted in classic rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on April 6, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SAVATAGE – I once owned Hall Of The Mountain King on vinyl. Years later, the vinyl is gone and I have it on CD. Yes, I prefer the vinyl. That’s besides the Metal point though, for Hall Of The Mountain King is such a classic of Metal classics, listening to it on a hissing cassette would still likely be okay by me.

When this album was released back in 1987, I was introduced to the title track first on MTV’s Headbangers Ball. The music video for this song was pretty cool, epic and entertaining, not the run-of-the-mill Heavy Metal video of the time. I found the title track to be undeniably progressive, compared to the Metal that Savatage was known for. This title track grew on me quickly and I ran out and bought the album… I was psyched.

From the artwork of Gary Smith to ALL ten songs, Hall Of The Mountain King had me hooked. I’ll say it again: a classic of classics. I’ll go as far by stating this album is a “top ten favorite of mine for all time” too. The more I listen to Hall Of The Mountain King, the more I love it. Picking a favorite song on this album is not easy for me. Strange Wings and The Price You Pay are two that get “repeat play” more often by me though.

Check out the classic – Hall Of The Mountain King music video below! Whoa!

The vocals of Jon Oliva on these songs are stuff of Metal legend. This amazing vocalist/musician never had to croon, continuously hit eye-popping high notes or try to sound like anyone else to be etched in my Metal senses so solidly. This is Jon Oliva and I swear he is one of the most underrated vocalists of all time, spanning any Rock or Metal genre. Speaking of the band itself: world-class musicians. Period.

The production of Paul O’Neill is superb and he brought in his vision for a future Savatage, one that none of us would have ever expected in our wildest Metal dreams. I remember the first time I listened to Prelude To Madness and I was awestruck. I thought, what is Savatage doing? This is Electric Light Orchestra gone Heavy Metal! It only made me more psyched out of my Metal mind, in part by being a huge fan of Electric Light Orchestra.

The overall sound, feel and vibe of Hall Of The Mountain King could never be duplicated, in my Metal opinion. If I had to recommend a Savatage album to someone unfamiliar with this band’s legacy, Hall Of The Mountain King would be it. My “Metal Pick Of The Day” or any day for that matter. Metal be thy name.

BREAKING NEWS – Trash Hauler Discovers World’s Largest Heavy Metal Album Collection

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, record collections, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on April 1, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Album Collection Estimated At Over 300,000 Pieces

Green Pastures Connecticut – The world’s largest Heavy Metal (vinyl) album collection was discovered by an independent trash hauler on March 31st, at 7:30 am, EST, on Brownestone Hill Road, in rural Green Pastures, Connecticut. Constantine H. McLeland founded his small trash hauling business (Bye, Bye, Bad Garbage, Ltd.) back in 1999 and has struggled with fluctuating economies, large corporate competition and nightmarish Northern Connecticut Winter storms, only his entrepreneurial spirit has always kept him moving forward.

Recently facing the prospect of closing his trash hauling business due to rising taxes and gasoline prices, Constantine’s future is looking much more brighter now, due to his discovery of what’s being called “the greatest”, “the largest” and “most valuable” of any Heavy Metal record collection known. This collection has quickly drawn the attention of famed record experts and collectors worldwide, based on its size, quality and titles that’s involved.

The “unofficial” count has this enormous collection estimated at over 300,000 albums, with an early “conservative” estimated value at over three million dollars (in U.S. funds). Has Constantine found his pot of gold? He replies: “I would  hopefully think so, it’s like winning the lottery and I feel like my life has been changed forever.” Asked if he listens to Heavy Metal, Constantine was quick to say: “I’m from the old school pack. Blue Cheer, Diamond Head, Pentagram, Judas Priest and Slayer are my bands, so, hell yes I listen to Heavy Metal.”

When asked to recount the moments leading up to his once-in-a-lifetime find, Constantine paused and requested we keep the name of his customer confidential. Constantine stated: “I received a call from a loyal customer of nearly ten years. He explained he wanted his six-car garage and adjoining guest house cleaned out in just three days. Of course I took the request and sent all four of my employees over to the customers property, each with a company truck. Then, I received a call from my employee (general manager) Henry. That’s when I got really involved.”

“Henry was ecstatic on the cell, he kept saying you won’t believe what we’re hauling away. When I arrived, I saw before me, boxes and industrial shelves filled with record albums. As far as we know and see, they are all Heavy Metal too. The entire guest house and garage are temperature controlled, with nothing but these albums as the contents! This customer is a perfectionist, this collection was stored professionally and neat as a pin. This collection goes back to the first Black Sabbath album and up to the early nineties. That first Black Sabbath album is even autographed by the band too, with a certificate of authenticity. I guess there are thousands of rare demo vinyl, picture discs, Japanese import vinyl and prototype vinyl, you know, one of a kind stuff.”

Apparently, Constantine did remind his customer that he was being paid to haul away a very valuable collection of albums. This customer was also reminded that once this collection was removed from his property, it would then be property of Bye, Bye, Bad Garbage Ltd., still, the customer agreed to these terms. Constantine explained: “This customer is a great guy, a genuine gentleman. He told me his Heavy Metal days were over and he now wanted to concentrate on amassing a large collection of ABBA and Disco albums instead. What a jackass. Damn poser.”

Asked what he will do next with his newfound and world’s largest collection of Heavy Metal albums: “I imagine I will keep most of it for now, I have the necessary storage on my property for it. I’ll sell some albums to keep payroll. I am a huge fan of Metal Odyssey and Stone is one loyal Metalhead… a really cool son-of-a-bitch, you know? So I’ll be giving him a good portion of this collection for free to enjoy. It’s my way of saying thanks to Stone and giving back to him, for having such a kick-ass Heavy Metal blog.”

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY!
