Prolific Progressive Rock Icon NEAL MORSE Moves Forward With a Blistering and Melodic New Release: “Momentum”

Posted in Guitar, guitarists, Hard Rock, Music, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 17, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Nashville, TN—Coming off of a highly successful 2011 marked by the release of the critically acclaimed “Testimony 2” and an enthusiastically attended tour throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe, Neal Morse could easily have justified going on a creative hiatus to catch his breath. But that would fly in the face of his convictions and the sense that he is being led to build upon the swell of success he is experiencing.

In January 2012, Morse was pondering the possibilities of a change in direction. After all, it had been a decade since he left the Progressive Rock stalwart Spock’s Beard to pursue a solo career that would allow him to write more freely about his personal faith. And in that time he had recorded 6 impressive studio records that were heralded for their unique hybrid of epic compositions that tested the boundaries of musicianship while maintaining a remarkable sense of melody through irresistible hooks and addictive choruses. He could have taken a break. Or gone in an entirely new direction. But he felt led otherwise, as summed up in the new record’s title track: “You’ve got some new momentum, you better keep going.”

Morse’s long time studio partner and friend Mike Portnoy had a small window in January 2012 when he could record. The only problem was, there was only one song and a few bits and pieces written. Taking a leap of faith, he scheduled a recording session with the drumming legend and longtime bass player Randy George in two weeks, hoping that the music would arrive before the musicians. And boy did it ever.

_____________________________

“Momentum” features five exceptional stand alone songs and one longer conceptual piece. In addition to the accessible title track, there’s the quirkily clever, Gentle Giant-inspired “Thoughts Part 5,” which follows in the footsteps of the previous “Thoughts” tracks penned by Morse with Spocks Beard. “Smoke and Mirrors” trods an introspective, acoustic path, while “Weathering Sky” offers a raucous cry for deliverance and renewal from a searching soul. Rounding out the shorter tracks is “Freak,” an upbeat, strings-charged song unlike anything Neal has recorded to date. Last comes “World Without End,” a near 34-minute, six-part epic that contains everything that defines Morse as a master of the genre.

Another highlight of this record is that, in addition to a masterful solo by guitar wizard Paul Gilbert, there are contributions from Adson Sodré, Bill Hubauer and Eric Gillette; three musicians who were selected as members of Morse’s new touring band through an exciting YouTube driven open audition process.

While “Momentum” propels Morse forward and further cements his standing as a prolific Progressive Rock icon, it steers clear of the potential “more of the same” trap, and features fresh musical angles and some of the finest performances to date by the Morse, Portnoy, George team.

The release of “Momentum” on September 11 will be quickly followed up by a North American tour that spotlights the fresh talent of his new live band, with stops in such cities as Nashville, Jacksonville, New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle and Mexico City.

Much to the delight of progressive Rock Fans around the globe, Neal Morse is moving ahead with “Momentum” and there doesn’t appear to be any kind of end to his unique creative talent in sight.

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE “Live At Berkeley” – Another Rock Music Treasure, From An Iconic Band And Historic Era Of Rock

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 16, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE – Released on July 10th, 2012, via Sony Legacy, Live At Berkeley is a Rock ‘N Roll gem to own. There’s never been a doubt in my Metal mind, that The Jimi Hendrix Experience were a trio of musicians that helped plant the seeds of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. I always ponder to myself, what would Jimi Hendrix think of today’s Heavy and Extreme Music? How would have Jimi’s guitar playing evolved if he had never passed away at such a young age of 27? I imagine I’m not alone with the wonder of it all. I bought this CD last week and I couldn’t be happier. Then again, if I scored a million dollar lottery ticket, I would be happier.

The production across the board on Live At Berkeley is sensational; the clarity of sound is undeniably first-rate. (The original location recordings were engineered by Abe Jacob). To have The Jimi Hendrix Experience captured live from this momentous evening of Rock history is Classic Rock personified. In my personal Metal opinion, there can never be enough live material of The Jimi Hendrix Experience; these Rock historic recordings recovered and released to the public are sonic journeys into a gilded past of music, in which I absorb like a sponge. There exists that select group of artists and bands that will always meet the demand for their (often times rare) unreleased studio and live music; The Jimi Hendrix Experience is a profound member of this select group.

______________________________

As with many live albums that have spanned the history of Rock Music, Live At Berkeley can also be considered a greatest hits. With such iconic Rock/Hard Rock songs such as Hey Joe, Purple Haze, Stone Free, Foxy Lady and Jimi’s adaptation of The Star Spangled Banner, Live At Berkeley showcases the songs that made both Jimi Hendrix and Heavy Rock escalate into the mainstream of popular music, during times of enormous social change. These are the songs that defined an era of Hard Rock, laying the field stone path for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal to follow.

Live At Berkeley was recorded on May 30th, 1970, (the 2nd show) at the Berkeley Community Theatre. On that storied night, Jimi Hendrix, along with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox (from Band Of Gypsys fame) on bass, most likely never knew of their eventual pop-culture and Rock historical impact they would have on multiple generations of musicians and fans. The Jimi Hendrix Experience left a Rock ‘N Roll impact that can never be duplicated ever again.

______________________________

Stones Note: The also legendary Noel Redding will always be included when I reference The Jimi Hendrix Experience; being the original bassist for this band, Noel was no longer a member when this Berkeley concert was recorded.

______________________________

The Jimi Hendrix Experience has left me awestruck with their pioneering contributions and immeasurable influence to Rock and Heavy Music. With all of its glorious genres that have spiraled from the bulging and glowing core of Heavy Music, I can thank The Jimi Hendrix Experience (and other select pioneering artists and bands) for all being the incubus that kick-started it all. The very least I can do now, is write about legends the likes of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and celebrate the release of their live music from the past. The Jimi Hendrix Experience… never to be forgotten and never to be replaced. Metal be thy name.

ZOMBIEFICATION – New EP Streaming In Its Entirety At Apoch’s Metal Review

Posted in Death Metal, death metal bands, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 14, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

In a sinister collaboration with Apoch’s Metal Review, Reaper’s Consecration, the latest EP from Mexican corpse-walkers ZOMBIEFICATION, is currently streaming in its entirety at THIS LOCATION through Sunday. Smell the carrion, if you dare!

Having risen from the grave in 2009 following the release of their debut, Midnight Stench, ZOMBIEFICATION wasted no time in concocting a venomous brew that makes up Reaper’s Consecration. Scheduled for a North American takeover via Pulverised Records on August 14, 2012, the EP was mixed and mastered at Necromorbus Studios (Watain, Interment, Demonical, etc.) in Sweden and features artwork/layout direction by ZOMBIEFICATION throat Mr. Hitch. Reaper’s Consecration spews five tracks of somber Swedified riffage and a fetid, old-school Death Metal soul; a ghoulishly appetizing platter of filth for true worshippers of the undead!

______________________________________

REVIEWS:

“If the imminent threat of the Reaper, the stench of death, dismemberment and zombies are your thing (and what’s not to love on that list?), then give Reaper’s Consecration a listen.” – Angry Metal Guy

“The production is deep and powerful, the guitars and bass have that good ol’ Sunlight Studios sound nailed down pat, and even ZOMBIEFICATION vocalist Mr. Hitch is a dead ringer for Nicke Andersson’s vocal performance on Clandestine. – About.com

“Pick up Reaper’s Consecration to hear just how death metal should be done.” – Pure Grain Audio

“With the disappearance of the mighty Dismember, it’s pleasant to come across a band like this, who does something comparable, with an eye for detail, unbound enthusiasm and a great production!”– Ave Noctum

“…a great five-track representation of some of the finest Swedeath worshiping in the Americas (which also goes to show that Pulverised Records has some awesome taste).” — Skull Fracturing Metal

“a crushing blow of intense death metal… showcasing five deathly songs of cataclysmic quality.” — Metal Odyssey

Wanna See My MISFITS (Promotional) Drinking Coaster? It’s Really Cool…

MISFITS – That’s the front side of this cool Misfits (promotional) drinking coaster! This coaster came inside the jewel case of: MISFITS Meet The Nutley Brass / Fiend Club Lounge. The front side of this coaster depicts the actual album cover. Since this collectible Misfits item came inside the CD, I consider it a promotional piece.

This Misfits album was released back in 2005, on MISFITS Records / RYKO. Unfortunately, this album has seen it’s share of harsh reviews, although there have been positive reviews as well. This wasn’t a Misfits album where they perform the music heard; instead all the songs are Misfits cover songs performed by The Nutley Brass. To sum up the sound of this album, think Tijuana Brass.

I understand the music is a huge detour from what fans expect from a Misfits album, still, I’ve listened to it and it’s not the end of the world. It’s different. Like Lenny Wolf of Kingdom Come would say: “it is what it is”.

The backside of this coaster does all the promoting, take a look below:

BIO:

Aggressive, hilarious, heavy and bloody and, just as importantly, filled with trans fats and cholesterol, Montreal’s Metal five-piece Dark Century welds together Death, Thrash, Grind and Hardcore, striving to always stay fresh.

Following their 2008 debut, Days of the Mosh, the band’s yet-to-be-titled second album is set to be unleashed on the masses later this year.

“One of the main differences is the fact that there is a second guitarist in the band now. This brings harmonies and solos that were not present before. The way we are recording is also different and our gear has evolved over the time. This time around we are also working with Chris Donaldson,” says guitarist Éric Duranleau.

“All in all, we are taking a big step from the previous album in order to put out something that sounds heavier, more aggressive and more in your face. We keep it simple and efficient. We are not reinventing the wheel. It is the logic evolution for us from Days Of The Mosh.”

With an unrivalled live show accompanying their music – “We like to bring the party on stage, we’ll throw ourselves around for the whole set and often feel it for a few days. When you come see a show that has Dark Century on the bill, you’ll get exactly that: a show” – it’s no wonder Dark Century was one of the two finalists at the Heavy MTL Battle of the Bands, winning the chance to play Heavy MTL this summer.

As Duranleau puts it, “Dark Century is bacon. It’s greasy, fat and crunchy and it is an essential element of any unbalanced diet!

Wanna See My IRON MAIDEN Mouse Pad and The Final Frontier Mission Edition CD? They’re Really Cool…

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

IRON MAIDEN – That’s it at the top! I acquired this cool Iron Maiden mouse pad from purchasing an issue of Metal Hammer (magazine) back in the Summer of 2010. This mouse pad came with a huge Iron Maiden poster too; all inside the plastic wrapper with the magazine. Metal Hammer has done many far-out giveaways with selling their issues over the years and this one is fun stuff.

I don’t use this mouse pad for it would get ruined over time. Instead, I’ve treated this as an Iron Maiden collectible, standing this mouse pad upright against a couple stacks of CD’s on a shelf.

The Final Frontier album release had a strong marketing campaign to bolster its popularity and sales. Metal Hammer obviously had a tremendous Metal hand in bringing massive attention to Iron Maiden’s 15th studio album. I received The Final Frontier on vinyl as a gift, a short while after its release. I’ll most likely take a picture of that album (it’s a gatefold too) and post about in the future.

I did buy The Final Frontier – Mission Edition on CD the week of its release. This “Mission Edition” is basically the CD and liner notes that are stored inside a light-weight metal container, with a circular see-through plastic front that looks like a spacecraft’s window. Another Iron Maiden collectible, if you will. If you haven’t seen one yet, here it is:

The Final Frontier – Mission Edition (Front)

The Final Frontier – Mission Edition (Back)

I bought this Mission Edition of The Final Frontier on one of my trips to Connecticut, at a very cool record store called Music Outlet. Located in Enfield, Connecticut, Music Outlet sells plenty of Metal related CD’s, vinyl, DVD’s, posters, tickets for local concerts and other cool stuff. Best Metal Buddy, Scott Coverdale, introduced me to Music Outlet. I look forward to visiting Music Outlet again someday. Metal be thy name.

Heaven and Hell Records – Responds To Trademark Infringement Claim

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 13, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

In March of 2012 Heaven and Hell Records released a limited 1000 pressing CD for the band Overlorde SR (formerly known as Overlorde) titled Medieval Metal Too. The release is an archive of the band’s material recording from 1983 to 1989.  Many will remember the North Carolina band from the track “Keeper of the Flame” featured on the Metal Blade Records’ Metal Massacre VIII compilation and their infamous 1985 Medieval Metal EP.

Since the announcement of this release, both Heaven and Hell Records and Overlorde SR have been contacted by the New Jersey band Overlorde with claims of trademark infringement. The New Jersey band has also claimed that band’s similar monikers will cause confusion in the Metal community. We feel there are substantial questions about who first used “Overlorde” and who is best known as Overlorde.  We also feel that the audience for this material is sufficiently small and sophisticated to know the difference between Overlorde and Overlorde SR (in fact, we also reissued material by Canada’s Overlord).

Nevertheless, the issue should be settled, and it should be settled between the bands without threats to Heaven and Hell Records. In light of this situation Heaven and Hell Records will be ceasing with sales of Overlorde SR – Medieval Metal Too until the two bands have come to some agreement. In addition any plans to release another album under the name Overlorde SR have been halted at this point.

Although we do support Overlorde SR and strongly feel that the evidence shows they used the name first and have tried to avoid confusion by using “Overlorde SR”, this is an issue between the two bands. And any assumptions that there will be confusion caused between the similar monikers, and that fans will not be able to distinguish between the two just seems rather insulting to the intelligence of the metal community.

In closing H&H Records hopes that both bands can come to a civil conclusion and put this matter to rest.

TITANS EVE – “Life Apocalypse” An Inferno Of Thrash From A Fast Rising Metal Battalion

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , , on July 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

TITANS EVE – 2012 has proven to be a quantum Metal leap forward for the Thrash Metal battalion from Vancouver, BC, known as Titans Eve. With their second full-length, Life Apocalypse, being released on July 13th, the Metal momentum for Titans Eve is on full-scale-Thrash-throttle. As an opening act for the legendary KORN back on June 29th, along with Summer tour dates opening for the supergroup KILL DEVIL HILL and also legendary ANVIL, Titans Eve is a Thrash force that have caught the attention of their Metal peer elite.

As I’ve listened to Life Apocalypse, I’ve come to realize that Titans Eve isn’t trying to sound like the other guys. Titans Eve hasn’t run off with old school fever. Titans Eve hasn’t caved into an over-swollen modern persona of sound either. Instead, Titans Eve truly plays their own scorching brand of Thrash Metal. Yes, the overall feel, vibe and sound that Titans Eve has tapped into has given me every reason to believe they will be around in another decade… or two.

When it pertains to level of heaviness, the Thrash from Titans Eve is not nearly as punishing as Slayer or present day Exodus, nevertheless, Titans Eve still plays Thrash in the heavy vein as ANVIL, AnthraxDeath Angel and Testament’s 1992’s offering The Ritual. Trust me, Titans Eve doesn’t need to go extreme, this band gets their Thrashin’ point across with admirable skill and polish.

Brian Gamblin’s vocals and the totality of musicianship is very refined and refreshing, with no glimmer of trying to strip things down to be acknowledged as “extra cool.” I’ve found Life Apocalypse to be free of any fillers, however, a musical detour is taken with A Wound That Never Heals and it’s a mellow break in the Thrash action. This instrumental is an excellent listen and legendary Thrash bands before Titans Eve have chilled out with a mid-tempo/mellow song and/or instrumental too.

Life Apocalypse is an inferno of Thrash to get your ears into. My favorite song here is Frozen In Time; still this album as a whole is a 2012 favorite. The shredding, sizzling solos, riffage, hammering rhythm section and gang vocals are all here, with confident, strong and expressive vocals from Brian Gamblin. With the young guns of Thrash, the likes of HemoptysisWarbringer, HAVOK, Bonded By Blood and Titans Eve, I can rest easy knowing that this beloved genre will remain a Metal force to be reckoned with for many, many years to come.

Buy Life Apocalypse and it will serve you Metal right. In keeping their sonic identity as unique as possible, Titans Eve have weaved decades of Thrash elements together and are undeniably real. Thrash Metal fans of any generation should appreciate what Titans Eve have created for quality songs on this album. Metal fans of any genre will know this is the stuff when they hear it too. Metal be thy name.

Horror Death Rock from the necropolis called Finland. Raise the Hell!

Rocking Corpses was conceived in the end of 2007 after Tony realized what kind of music he really wanted to do. Being a big fan of bluesy rock, death metal and horror, Rocking Corpses was going to be a mixture of all that he loved in music and movies. Some months later Laze got interested about the idea and joined forces with Tony. In 2009 two demo songs were recorded and in 2010 they decided to record a whole 10 piece story about the apocalypse as seen through the eyes of a zombie.

Rock ‘n’ Rott is not only the genre of Rocking Corpses, but also the title of the first album that depicts what happens in the mind of a zombie. The story is full of black humor and gore, but also many references to real life. The music is a mixture of many Rock and Metal elements with low growling verses and melodic and very catchy choruses. There is not so much distortion in the guitars and the beats have more Rock than Death Metal influences, so the combination is very unique and appealing to many different tastes.

Tony D.K. – Vocals & Guitar

Leper Laze – Vocals & Bass

Friend Slash Lover – Offers More Emotion, Reality with “The Grey Area” EP

Posted in indie rock, Rock, rock albums, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Indie Rock Band Delivers On Sophomore EP

Los Angeles, CA – Indie rock group Friend Slash Lover (FSL) give the world their artistic view in musical form with their second EP, The Grey Area. The EP is available to fans on iTunes and the band’s official website. The Los Angeles based band is heating up the music scene with captivating conceptual material for true radio heads everywhere.

Front man Josh Mintz, vocalist and songwriter, started out making music as a solo act under the name Stupid Human after teaching himself how to sing, write and play guitar. The former student of Rhode Island School of Design was musically inclined from the early age of 8, winning over 70 awards during his seven-year stint playing the fife in a drum corps marching band. Bassist Frank Day was with Mintz from the beginnings of FSL and since then, the band has added Jake Hayden, drums, and Greg Pajer, guitar, to the lineup.

With a complete band and the full collective sound Mintz always desired, Friend Slash Lover is about to embark on their most ambitious project yet. The seasoned performers have already hit some of the most popular nightclubs and music venues in Los Angeles such as The Roxy Theater, The Viper Room, Bootleg Theatre and Skinny’s Lounge.

Excited to deliver a second dose of musical remedy to fans, Friend Slash Lover called upon old friend Thom Flowers, who mixed the group’s debut EP As American As Ones And Zeros, to mix and produce The Grey Area. The EP was mastered by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering and recorded at both Dave’s Room and Orangewhip Studios. The new six-song compilation is much more musically developed and the growth of the band is clear from the thought-provoking lyrics to the instrumental fluidity. On the title track “The Grey Area”, Mintz showcases his wide-range vocal chops as the song builds to an epic climax. The EP also features a cover of the 1987 hit “Dear God” by major alternative rock band XTC. The song was at the heart of controversy after its release due to the atheistic lyrics. The lead single “As Seen On TV” features a head-knocking punk rock sound combined with Mintz’s signature smooth vocals and an infectious hook.

Every song boasts each band member’s talent and carries its own individual character and message. Ultimately, The Grey Area is a modern sonic marvel waiting to be uncovered.

Boasting a more emotional appeal with an ethereal feel, the lyrics on this record reflect the band’s creative ability to convey real life experiences. Music fans looking to break away from the usual head-banging heavy metal or cookie-cutter pop tunes might be in for a treat with The Grey Area.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Wednesday, July 11, 2012

On a recent trip to f.y.e., I was accompanied by Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale and he discovered this unreal and not readily easy-to-find Sepultura EP (pictured above). Tribus – Australian Special Tour Edition was released back in 1999, via Roadrunner Records. This primo Sepultura find was in a large bin of unused CD’s that were drastically reduced in price. I paid 50 cents for it. 50 cents!! Ring that bargain Metal bell and whoa. There’s more to come in this post, about this f.y.e. trip…

______________________________

I am currently in the preliminary stages of relocating with my family. Where to? Hint: the Pretenders had a hit single about this state (My City Was Gone) and it can be found on this album:

Pretenders – Learning To Crawl

Released: (1983 U.K.) (1984 U.S.) on Sire

______________________________

Just when you think you’ve seen everything, well, think again. I guess we all get stunned every once in-awhile. Now… take a look at this… if you dare:

Yup. An ABBA tribute band. They’re called ARRIVAL. They’re also dubbed “The worlds greatest ABBA tribute band” too. The scary thing about all of this; is the clear fact that people are paying to see them perform. Metal be thy name and may the Metal Gods save my Metal soul.

______________________________

My apologies for showing the above, my Metal brethren. At least now, you know stuff like this actually exists. To remedy any aftershock from what you’ve just read and saw, stare at the album cover below:

NILE – At The Gate Of Sethu (Nuclear Blast)

Yes, by staring at the cover art for At The Gate Of Sethu, it will rid you of any possible ABBA cover band nightmares. This new NILE album is incredible. What else can be expected from NILE? Buy it. Play it. Play it often. Play it F’n loud. NILE F’N RULES. I couldn’t be more Metal precise than that.

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale and I had a Metal reunion! The last time I saw him was on our trip to the 2010 M3 Rock Festival down in Columbia, Maryland. The family and I took a trip up to Connecticut from Pennsylvania this past weekend and putting aside a few hours to hang out with Coverdale was Metal mandatory. Coverdale just returned from a 3 week trip to Lebanon and London. We only had a short window of time to see each other; so here is where we went:

Yes, Scott Coverdale and I found out that the Metal was aplenty at the f.y.e. in Torrington, Connecticut (both used and new CD’s). Believe it or not, we spent just under 2 hours there! We had to make comments about every damn CD we picked up; yelling across the aisles whatever we had to say, we were like 2 old ladies at a bingo hall! Coverdale and I both spent (about) $40 each; with used CD’s being the rule. As Coverdale always says: “you get more Metal bang for your buck, when you buy used CD’s”. I honestly can’t argue with him there.

Hey. Speaking of “bingo hall”… can you keep a secret? Stone used to oversee the entire operation of a parochial school bingo. It was a huge weekly event; one which raised a handsome amount of money for the school. Metal be thy name.

Alright. Enough about F’n bingo. Coverdale and I then left the f.y.e. store and drove our cars 50 feet to:

Ninety Nine. It’s a restaurant. It’s a bar. It has a family atmosphere too. Burgers, fries, chicken, salads, etc. are served up there. I’ve always liked the food and service at Ninety Nine. Coverdale and I opted to sit at the bar and take in on the big screen: the warriors from the Bronx, a.k.a. New York Yankees pounding on the hapless Boston Red Sox. What did we eat you’re wondering? We shared a huge plate of hot wings. What did we drink it all down with? Cold beer.

I’m a devout Yankees fan and Coverdale is, well, a Red Sox fan. Our baseball rivalry has always made for memorable debates! Once we both knew it was time to say goodbye, it kind of sucked. Our schedules and distance keeps us apart, still, we are… Best Metal Buddies to the end! Metal be thy name.

Thank you for sticking around and reading my Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts. It is appreciated. Now remember: during these hot and humid Summer months, watch where you’re walking in parking lots. Why? You don’t want to step on any gooey and sticky-as-shit bubble gum that some dork threw on the ground.
