KISS “MONSTER” (Some Fun & Rockin’ Thoughts From Stone, Part 1) – My Favorite Song Revealed!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on October 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KISS – Okay. Unless you’ve been living on the Moon or have been out-of-touch with humanity for the past year, there is a brand new KISS album for sale and it’s called: MONSTER. The 20th studio album from the ICONIC KISS was released this past Tuesday, on October 9th, via UMe. Yup, this new album is exactly that… an F’n MONSTER and I mean that in the most grandest way too. Metal be thy name and ring that KISS Army bell. Tell all the naysayers and posers to go to F’n hell.

You see, being a lifetime KISSaholic, how could I write an album review for MONSTER with just one post? I did write reviews in the past for other KISS albums; where I cover the album’s songs and how it sounds, feels, blah, blah, blah and F’n blah again. This time around, for MONSTER, I’m gonna do things a tad different. I’ll write about one song, about the album cover or whatever the hell I want to write about, in reference to this ABSOLUTE ROCKING KISS ALBUM. One F’n post at a time. Metal be thy KISSaholic name and tell all the naysayers… SHAME!

What’s my favorite song on MONSTER? Which song have I played over and over and over and Rock And Roll Over again? That’s easy. Here it is:

LONG WAY DOWN

I’m telling you right now, this song has CLASSIC ROCK oozing from it’s every crevice and the guitars are the HUGE giveaway here. For those who never thought KISS could make a song that would elevate them into the upper stratosphere of ROCK RELEVANCE… think again. With Long Way Down, KISS reached back into their CLASSIC HARD ROCK ROOTS and have delivered a very (un)KISS-like sound that somehow sounds like… KISS.

Paul Stanley sounds SUPERB on vocals while Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer sound simply invincible as musicians on this song. (Aw, hell, that pretty much sums up KISS on this whole album). Listen for yourself and maybe you’ll agree… that KISS MONSTER is 100% KICK-ASS KISSTORY.

Uh, oh. Stone gets a tad pissed off here:

It’s funny how all the BIG NAME mags and newspaper Rock critics all want to be a part of the KISS ARMY now that they’ve listened to MONSTER. Where were all these naysayers and posers since KISS Dynasty was released? KISS MY ASS is what I say to them all. KISS it baby. SSSMMMAAACCCKKK!

Okay, Stone is mellow again. Um, Kinda.

Stay tuned for some more Fun & Rockin’ Thoughts From Stone regarding MONSTER… I promise to keep the blah, blah, blah out of the mix and the constipated KISS naysayers pissed! Metal be thy name.

HELLDORADOS released their self-titled debut album on July 13, 2012 via Massacre Records.

The album reached #64 at the Amazon Hard & Heavy Charts on the first sales day. Promotion concerts followed, for example at this year’s Bang Your Head Open Air in Balingen and the legendary Wacken Open Air.

The first HELLDORADOS music video “You Live, You Learn, You Die” (http://youtu.be/m3f7iPd-at8) received 5000 clicks within one month on YouTube and is also very popular everywhere else.

“This was a good start for us, but now we have prove ourselves on stage,“ said singer Pierre.

A few concerts are planned this year, before they’re going on festival tour in 2013. However, a real highlight is going to happen this Monday, October 1st!

HELLDORADOS are going to support The Darkness at their only concert in Germany on October 1st in Frankfurt!

Steve, the band’s guitarist, commented:

“The inquiry of the promoter came really unexpectedly for us, but we are proud and are glad about a wonderful concert evening in Frankfurt!”

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Sunday, September 30th, 2012

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on September 30, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Wanna know what recently released album has psyched-me-out-of-my-Rock-‘N-Metal-mind? Just look at the above album cover! No, it’s not just the cover that has me psyched; it’s the Hard Rockin’ sonic bliss that The Darkness are playing on Hot Cakes that has put me in such a whirlwind of glee! What an album of instantly memorable songs!

This is the third studio album from this amazingly fun British band from Lowestoft and it’s a gem to feed my ears with. This Hot Cakes album has me believing that good, old-fashioned Glam/Hard Rock is alive and well once again. Do yourself a favor and buy Hot Cakes, especially if you like your Hard Rock that kicks the politically correct school of thought right in the ass!

It’s hard to believe we will be entering October tomorrow! To me, it feels like Summer was put on fast forward. With that said, I am a huge fan of Autumn and the spooky swirls of Halloween. With Halloween falling on a Wednesday (hump day) this year, it will obviously fall within two days of two weekends. I imagine that’s pretty cool, especially if you’re planning a Halloween party; you’ll basically have two weekends to choose from for your ghoulish get-together!

Once Autumn and the Halloween season begins, there are select bands and/or albums that I’ll gravitate to all the more for those creepy Rockin’ vibes! One such band is Helloween and their 1985 full-length debut: Walls Of Jericho. A Helloween classic and a classic within the pages of Heavy Metal history, this album is, in my Metal opinion.

Everything about DANZIG just screams Halloween. Seriously. From Glenn’s music, to his band logo and album artwork. I once encountered a wise-old Metal troll along a treacherous and densely wooded path in the Northern woods of Pennsylvania. This troll stated to me: “Stone, y-y-you best g-g-get some DANZIG into y-y-your F’n ears d-d-during Halloween s-s-season.” I’ll have to admit, that wise-old Metal troll was no dumb-ass.

Other albums and bands that I’ll listen to in ushering in the Halloween season: King Diamond, the 1970 debut and self-titled album from Black Sabbath, MISFITS, Iron Maiden (especially their first 3 albums), White Zombie, Rob Zombie, Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, Zombiefication, Angel WitchSatyricon and… well, you get the Metal point!

Here’s a Metal news item of importance for all you REVERENCE fans out in Europe:

As reported on REVERENCE facebook on September 29th:

Reverence Cancel’s European Tour: To all the fans, promoters and venues, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, we are being forced to cancel our upcoming European tour. We were looking forward to playing for our fans and making new ones. This is something we don’t take halfheartedly and want you to know this is not the end of Reverence, we will definitely be heading to Europe in 2013. Although this seems like bad news we are taking this opportunity to begin writing new material for the next release and various other things to be heading your way in the months to come.”

Stone Says: REVERENCE is such a grand Classic Metal band! True Metal. If you haven’t picked up their debut album, When Darkness Calls, you are hereby told to do so! REVERENCE has easily earned themselves the “top-spot” for Greatest Metal Surprise Of 2012. Metal be thy name.

KISS Kollectibles – Wanna See My KISS Puzzle Cube Key Chain? It’s Really Cool…

KISS KOLLECTIBLES – That’s it at above! That’s my KISS Puzzle Cube Key Chain! I bought this kool KISS Kollectible at a mall store called SPENCER’S about a year or so ago. This store specializes in selling Rock Music memorabilia, (adult/naughty) gifts, gag/humor gifts, body jewelry and tons more of oddball and pop-culture items. I paid $1.50 (U.S.) for this KISS Puzzle Cube Key Chain, finding it on a clearance hook. I only paid $1.50! Whoa!

As you can see in the above photo, I had a difficult time getting the price sticker off the blister package; so I just gave up on removing it. Obviously, I’m going to keep this KISS Kollectible sealed in its original package for my KISS Kollection!

On this puzzle cube, each KISS solo album portrait is shown, along with the Klassic KISS logo and the KISS character symbols.

The manufacturer of this fabulous KISS Kollectible is Rabbit Tanaka Corp. Ltd. and under license by Signatures Network and KISS ONLINE. The date printed on the back of this package is 2007. Here’s what the package back looks like:

There seems to be countless KISS Kollectibles out in the marketplace! Whenever I cross paths with a KISS Kollectible that is this inexpensive, I buy it!

KIX ‘Live In Baltimore’ – No Fillers, No Artificial Flavors… Just KIX Playing Some (Kick Ass) Live & Heavy Rock ‘N Roll!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, live rock albums, Music, rock concerts, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on September 29, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KIX – There are hundreds of famous bands still bringing it from the dazzling, loud, trendsetting, colorful and arena-filled decade known as the 80’s. That decade also boasts some incredibly loyal Hard Rock and Heavy Metal fans. I am proud of my growing up as a teen during that brilliant decade of excessive Rock heaviness, glitz, glam and Metal toxicity. One band from the 80’s that has triumphantly returned and kept their Hard Rock adrenaline on a full-on-high is Hagerstown, Maryland’s KIX.

During the 80’s, KIX released four (charting) albums that spilled over with Hard Rock goodness, courtesy of KIX’s guitar driven, bass thumping, drum pounding, memorable songs; with lyrics sung by the flamboyant Steve Whiteman that motivated so many of us to sing along to, during an any occasion keg party or get together with the pack. KIX was a significant puzzle piece to that decade of Heavy Music decadence and now you can hear for yourself with Live In Baltimore as to why this is righteously so. (KIX would later release 2 more studio albums that charted in the early 90’s).

If you’ve never had a chance to see KIX play live, this album is the second-best thing; Live In Baltimore is your invitation to shed away any moral cobwebs that have kidnapped your thoughts and dreams about good-times Rock ‘N Roll. The 16 plus minutes of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah is a live KIX staple and never fails to remind me that Rock ‘N Roll was supposed to be (gulp) fun to begin with. Make that F’n fun. Steve Whiteman never disappoints my Rockin’ funny bone with his chatter on Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, regardless of how many times I hear it.

Cold Blood will crank-up my adrenaline for eternity, a song that can easily transform a crappy mood I’m in… into one of Hard Rock jubilation. Again, Steve Whiteman makes this live version of Cold Blood 200% better, just from his interaction with the happily screaming fans. Don’t Close Your Eyes is timeless for me, with the emotion that spills over from both its lyrics and music. If you play this power ballad with your #1 gal, she’s guaranteed to get all mushy in your arms. If this song doesn’t have that sort of affect I just described, then your #1 gal is a mannequin.

From start-to-finish, KIX undeniably kicks some heavy Rock ‘N Roll ass on this Live In Baltimore album. KIX will make you move, laugh and sing aloud like you’re supposed to do while listening to live, energy-charged, heavy Rock ‘N Roll. KIX turned me into a fan of their stuff many, many years ago. When I (finally) saw KIX live back in 2010, I experienced why I was a fan of this band for so long. With Live In Baltimore, I can constantly revisit and refresh my KIXaholic enthusiasm. Buy this live KIX album. It will serve you right. Metal be thy name.

ISSA – To Revisit A Dozen AOR Classics On Her New Album ‘Can’t Stop’

Posted in aor, classic rock, Hard Rock, melodic rock, Music, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on September 28, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of ISSA’s third album entitled “Can’t Stop” on November 2nd in Europe and November 5th in North America.

Can’t Stop” is a very special album for ISSA, since it includes some blistering versions of carefully selected hidden AOR gems that the singer treats her own way. These tracks have been originally included on albums by Mark Free, Aviator, 21 Guns, Atlantic, Regatta, Worrall, Blvd, Tower City and other AOR luminaries.

Issa has created her own style and approach to Melodic Rock by mixing her peculiar and unique  melodic sensibility with a rocking attitude which is unseen in today’s Pop singers: real rock with a commercial sheen. These reworkings show how Issa is at ease when working on classic AOR musical material.

Serafino at Frontiers came up with the concept of me recording an album of some loved and cult melodic rock songs and sent me through the song choices” says Issa “Some I was familiar with, like Tower City’s “Surrender” and Mark Free’s “State of Love”, but several others were new to me. I thought the songs that suited me best are  “Just a Wish” and “These Eyes” originally recorded by 21 Guns. They have nice structures and ballad like intros that build to a big chorus. Can’t Stop is a great rocker too and I love the melodies and lyrics in the Tower City track”.

Issa versions of these amazing tracks ooze class and update to the modern-day some truly immortal melodies, with some masterful arrangements provided by producer Alessandro Delvecchio (Hardline). Since her debut “Sign of Angels”, Issa has often been compared to such music stars as Celine Dion, Avril Lavigne and Amy Lee (Evanescence). Though she is now ready to take her legitimate place in between the great AOR chanteuses such as Ann Wilson and Robin Beck.  “Can’t Stop” shows that Issa is a solid Rock Music star and a true uprising Rock diva, who is set to alight hearts and minds of Melodic Rock fans for the years to come.

Promoting this album is my priority for now with some live dates around Europe” concludes Issa. “I have 3 albums now so my set is really cool. I’ve been doing a lot more songwriting as well for my next original album which i hope we can start working on at some point next year”.

___________________________________________

Can’t Stop” includes the following tracks:

Can’t Stop; Power Over Me; Wherever I Run; Just A Wish; If You Ever Fall;  Do You Ever Think Of Me; Dream On; Stranded; Heat Of The Night; I Won’t Surrender; State Of Love; These Eyes.

GYPSYHAWK – “Hedgeking” (Official Video) And “Revelry & Resilience” Are Stone’s METAL Picks Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 27, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

GYPSYHAWK – Guitar driven. Cruising Rock ‘N Roll. Blue Collar, knuckle crackin’, foot stompin’ and beer drinkin’ good-times Heavy Rock. Old school. Did I mention guitar driven? A blend of Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Classic Rock and Southern Rock never sounded so damn refreshingly cool. I’m talking about the new album released on Metal Blade Records (on August 28th) from California’s Gypsyhawk that’s titled: Revelry & Resilience. Essentially, Realistically, undoubtedly, unquestionably, this new Gypsyhawk album kicks pure, 100% Heavy Rockin’ ass.

There’s some heavy-duty classic Thin Lizzy vibes happening throughout Revelry & Resilience. Eric Harris on vocals and bass just “has a slick way” of reminding me of the late Phil Lynott. Don’t get me wrong, Eric Harris is musically his own man and Gypsyhawk dishes out heaping doses of original heavy sound. This Gypsyhawk band flat-out Rocks in such a glorious way, their songs, sound and style inspires me to shake away the bullshit stress that’s been hanging over my head for far too long.

I will share this: Gypsyhawk’s cover of Rick Derringer’s Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo is freakin’ great. Whoa! Let’s just say that I cannot get enough of this cover song from Gypsyhawk. These dudes nailed it! This classic song was meant to be covered by Gypsyhawk and belongs on their album, there’s no sliver of doubt in my Metal mind about that.

Man, I’m gonna tell you all right now… Gyspyhawk’s Heavy Rock ‘N Roll has gotten me psyched out of my brains! I absolutely love listening to Revelry & Resilience and couldn’t recommend this album more strongly to all my fellow Metal and Rockaholic brethren. Metal be thy name.

Take a listen (and look) below to the new and official video for Hedgeking. Check that. Take a dozen or so listens to Hedgeking! Crank this song up and thank the Rock ‘N Metal Gods that Gypsyhawk has created such a blazingly memorable song (and album) to feed our ears with!

As reported on Tom Keifer OfficialMEROVEE RECORDS websites:

Singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Tom Keifer is finally releasing his long-awaited and highly anticipated solo album in the Spring of 2013 after entering into a partnership with Merovee Records (a joint venture with Worldwide Pants, Inc.). The as-yet-untitled collection of 14 new songs ranges from intimate, organic, acoustic tracks to driving hard rock. It embraces the blues, rock and country roots that have always been present in his unique sound that has generated the sale of over 15 million records worldwide.

The upcoming release is a raw, introspective look at the roller coaster ride that has been Keifer’s life for the past 15 years. THE ORDER – 1986 Is An Album Bursting At The Seams With Hard Rockin’ & Heavy Metallin’ Old School Glory!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on September 18, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

THE ORDER – Attention all fans of 80’s Hard Rock, Arena Rock, Classic Rock and early MTV era Heavy Metal: The Order have recorded an album that ushers in the loud, proud, colorful and ultra pumped-up energy that our beloved 80’s Heavy Music had to offer and it’s titled 1986. There’s no doubt in my Metal mind that 1986 was a magnificent year for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Now there’s no doubt that this 1986 album is a priority recommendation of mine and one of the very best Hard Rock meets Heavy Metal albums I’ve listened to in 2012… or in the last few years for that matter.

Everything about these 10 songs on 1986 is huge! Huge guitars, huge vocals, huge drums, huge bass. Just a rainstorm of good-times lyrics surrounded by 80’s old school Hard and Heavy Rock ‘N Roll thunder! With 1986, The Order have taken the old adage of what once was old is new again and have written it across the sky. 1986 is the fourth album from these Swiss Hard Rockers and they’ve proven their seasoned musicianship is truly something to behold.

Gianni Pontillo on vocals should make the legendary (and fellow countryman) Marc Storace (of Krokus fame) very, very, very proud. Damn proud. To say it’s a Metal treat to take in the vocals of Gianni on this album is a gross understatement. Bruno Spring dials-in on every tiny guitar nuance that is golden about that arena-era of sound, glitz and glam! The solos, leads and all-encompassing melodic blanket of sound that Bruno plays throughout 1986 is 100% contagious to my Metal lovin’ and Hard Rockin’ senses. Holy Heavy Rockin’ shit.

Take a listen, no, take several listens to the opening track The Power Of Love below! This song is only 1 of 10 that kicks supreme Heavy Rockin’ ass like there’s no tomorrow!

If you can make it through the first four songs on 1986 without getting the psyche-you-out police breaking down the front door, then you’re in for an amazing sonic experience of Hard and Heavy Rock ‘N’ Roll! Just when I thought I’ve listened to it all, this is an album that has lifted me up, spun me around and kicked me straight in the ass with an old school Timberland boot; a boot full of Hard Rockin’ shock and Heavy Metallin’ awe. Holy Heavy Rockin shit, again.

The Order even recorded a ballad that kicks mammoth Metal ass. Under The Rain is the ballad and it’s a diamond-status moment for Gianni on vocals. Now, don’t take my Metal word for it. Take my F’n Metal word for it. The Order are a band you absolutely must know about and their 1986 album is one you absolutely must own. Metal be thy name.

1986 was released on July 27th, 2012, via Massacre Records.

DEF LEPPARD LEAD GUITARIST – PHIL COLLEN – To Auction Custom Guitar For Charity; All Proceeds To Be Donated To The GERSON INSTITUTE Supporting A Holistic Cancer Therapy

Posted in charities, classic rock, guitarists, Hard Rock, hard rock news, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on September 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Guitar Played Exclusively Throughout Def Leppard “Rock of Ages” Tour This Summer

(Los Angeles, CA) –PHIL COLLEN, lead guitarist for the iconic rock band DEF LEPPARD, announces plans for a charitable auction of “Wings”, a custom Jackson PC1 guitar that Collen has played throughout this summer’s Rock of Ages tour.  The auction, taking place exclusively on eBay, will begin on September 5th and end September 14th, the last date of the tour.  The winner will be announced in November which is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and all proceeds from the auction will benefit the Gerson Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the Gerson Therapy, an alternative treatment for cancer and other degenerative diseases.

In early 2012, Jake Willoughby, a guitar and music store owner, asked Collen if he would assist in helping to raise money towards the fight against cancer with Jake’s mother having just passed away from pancreatic cancer after a courageous 13-month fight.  By tragic coincidence Phil’s own father, Kenneth succumbed to the same disease in 2004.  Jake donated a Collen signature guitar, the Jackson PC1 from his music store. In the spirit of hope it was named “Wings”.  Mike Learn, a noted artist whose graphics are well-known in the guitar world, donated the graphic custom paint job on the guitar.  Ironically, Mike lost two family members to the same disease.

Phil began researching companies that were not only looking to prevent cancer, but also reverse its devastating effects.  He initially had heard about The Gerson Institute located in San Diego, CA from Jeni Cook, a raw foods chef and the wife of Sex Pistols and Manraze drummer, Paul Cook.  As Phil watched “The Gerson Miracle” DVD he was incredibly moved by their cause wishing he would have known about them before his father passed. The Gerson Institute is a non-profit organization in San Diego, California dedicated to providing education and training in the Gerson Therapy – an alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases. The Gerson Therapy, developed by Dr. Max Gerson in the 1920s, activates the body’s extraordinary ability to heal itself through an organic, vegetarian diet, raw juices, detoxification, and natural supplements. Since this powerful, natural treatment boosts the body’s own immune system, it is an effective method for treating not only cancer, but a variety of degenerative diseases including arthritis, heart disease, allergies, and skin tuberculosis.

Dr. Gerson began developing the Therapy while looking for a way to manage his own debilitating migraines, a path that lead him to a holistic understanding of medicine that is finally gaining growing acceptance.

This year marks a number of anniversaries for COLLEN, namely the 30th anniversary of his joining Def Leppard as lead guitarist making his debut on the 10x platinum (in the USA) album Pyromania.  In addition, this year marks the 25th anniversary for the 13x platinum (USA) album Hysteria, as well as the 20th anniversary of its 5x platinum (USA) follow-up Adrenalize.

About The Gerson Institute:

The Gerson Institute is a non-profit organization in San Diego, California dedicated to providing education and training in the Gerson Therapy, an alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases.
