Ronnie Montrose – Legendary guitarist and Hard Rock & Heavy Metal pioneer Ronnie Montrose passed away on Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, at the age of 64. From numerous credible reports, it has been stated that Ronnie Montrose was battling prostate cancer. Metal Odyssey expresses condolences to the family, friends and fans of Ronnie Montrose.
The A-list of musicians that Ronnie Montrose had recorded and played with throughout his legendary career is extensive, (Boz Skaggs, Van Morrison, The Edgar Winter Group) to name a few. Ronnie Montrose had of course, his very own legendary Hard Rock band Montrose, a band in which Sammy Hagar debuted in, fronted and received his career break from. Ronnie Montrose also enjoyed much success with the Rock/Hard Rock/AOR band Gamma.
The Rock N’ Roll of Ronnie Montrose shall live on forever. Rest in peace, Ronnie Montrose.

For the past several months amazing reviews of ABIGAIL WILLIAMS‘ Becoming have been pouring in, the new direction the band has taken on this album obviously many longtime fans’ favorite recording to date.
Clocking in at nearly an hour in length, Becoming ushers in a provocative new chapter for the ever-evolving ABIGAIL WILLIAMS. Containing six vast tracks, truly the band’s most expressive and complicated to date, Becoming was recorded in various warehouses throughout Los Angeles, with the lineup for the album including returning guitarist IanJekelis, studio drummer Zach Gibson (ex-The Black Dahlia Murder) and as always, vocalist/guitarist Ken Sorceron, who handled all mixing, mastering, production and engineering duties.
Canadian Progressive Death Metal band Ascariasis have released their debut EP Ocean of Colour. The EP consists of five songs: Shatter, Torchbearer, Eleven, Ocean of Colour, and Carving the World. The album art was designed by Cameron Gray, notable for creating album art for bands such as Born of Osiris, Dead Letter Circus and Fallujah.
Ascariasis embodies a new breed of Modern Canadian Metal. This four piece, founded in 2009, includes Evan Watton (vocals), Devin Kendall (bass), Mike Valeri (guitars), and Mark Poelmann (drums). They bring a unique mix of crushing brutality, agonizing passages and soaring melodies to the scene. With influences ranging from the most technical and chaotic Metal styles to Ambient and Classical, the band seeks to break beyond expectations and deliver a fresh blend of Melodic, Technical and Progressive Death Metal while staying true to their local roots.
“I think this EP is a good window into the mindset that shapes our view on music and Metal in general,” says bassist Devin Kendall. “We look at it in the sense that we don’t have to assign a particular genre to our sound and we leave it as free-form and thought-provoking as possible.”
Ascariasis has been featured in various publications including heavyblogisheavy.com. They are currently working on their debut album, which is set to be released in 2013.
LIZZY BORDEN – Check it out below! The NEW 2012 promo video for LIZZY BORDEN has landed! WARNING: By watching this video below, you will have the uncontrollable urge to seek out a LIVE gig of LIZZY BORDEN in 2012. Don’t say I didn’t F’n warn you.
GRAVEYARD – Releasing on April 17th, 2012, in North America via Pulverised Records, is this 6 song EP from GRAVEYARD aptly titled: The Altar OfSculpted Skulls. Barcelona Spain should be extremely proud to boast they are home to this tenacious and talented Death Metal pack. Dark, groove infested and strewn with a raging wall of sound, GRAVEYARD is not a run-of-the-mill Death Metal band that wants to only shock and awe. There are melodic moments aplenty in which guitarists Bastard and SBE impress with their axes.
Yes, Bastard and SBE can shred and riff it out with extremity, they give GRAVEYARD a signature sound, coming across with an astute awareness for branding this band with memorable deadly licks and tones. Damn good players. Julkarn on bass and vocals sounds like one Death Metal dude you never want to consider messing with. Vocally guttural and coming across like a pissed off nest of Black Shield Wasps, Julkarn’s voice is Death Metal personified.
Gusi on drums administers the Death Metal punishment on his kit with both speed and precision and is damn enjoyable to listen to. Nothing intricate with Gusi, just a Death Metal blast of sound that’s authoritative with kick-ass fills. If a Death Metal fan (old or new school) that is hankering for a new album asked me what to pick up, The Altar Of Sculped Skulls would be at the top of my must ownlist. These members of GRAVEYARD play and sound like the seasoned Metal artists that they undeniably are.
The Altar Of Sculpted Skulls has turned out to be a Death Meal album I can’t listen to just as a “once through”, instead I let these 6 songs play a second, third and fourth time in a row. This band sucks me right into their Death Metal world of sonic brutality. Yeah, GRAVEYARD are so maniacally good and this EP stings myMetal senses so damn savagely. I won’t dispute any claim that has GRAVEYARD labeled as: DeathFucking Metal. Damn right they are. Metal be thy name.
EXTREME will make their much-anticipated debut concert performance in Moscow, Russia. This landmark concert will be the first time Extreme has played Russia and will take place at the new Stadium Concert Hall on April 25th.
German Metal Queen DORO Pesch has announced new tour dates for late 2012! Currently DORO’s also working on a brand new album – the first for Nuclear Blast.
Commented DORO: “Dear fans! Past weekend, I flew over to the US to work on the last couple of songs for my new album. Just some last twists and pulls to be done – after three long years of hard work! But it all paid off in the end. My first album for Nuclear Blast will literally be a BLAST! I am considering having those 12-14 songs being mixed in Scandinavia for the first time. The producers there guarantee a massive, fresh and modern sound. I really can’t wait until my first album for NB will eventually be out in October. To shorten the wait, for as well you as myself, we plan to release an EP around May/June 2012. From November on we’ll rock Europe – in support of the new album from which we’ll definitely will include around 4-5 hymns in our set.”
Rocking greets,
DORO

Feb. 23, Torrance, Calif. — Scion A/V has partnered with the Melvins for an EP titled Scion A/V Presents: The Bulls & TheBees, a five-song collection that marks the band’s first original material since their 2010 album The Bride Screamed Murder. The release will be available as a free download on Mar. 13 via Scion A/V’s website (www.scionav.com). A free stream of the first track, “The War On Wisdom” premiered Friday, February 24, 2012 on Pitchfork: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/13220-the-war-on-wisdom/.
The Melvins formed in 1983, kicking off what would be a seismic shift in heavy music and focusing the epicenter of modern music firmly on the Pacific Northwest for the next decade plus. The band blended Punk, Metal and Hard Rock to create a new subgenre that has been tagged with a variety of labels including Sludge, Grunge and Doom and won a cult of fans that have yet to waiver some twenty-nine years into the band’s career. Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover have been the band’s constants (Crover joined in 1984) with Big Business’ Jared Warren and Coady Willis joining the band in 2006 for (A) Senile Animal.
“The Melvins have remained such a consistent presence in heavy music,” says Jeri Yoshizu, manager of sales promotions for Scion. “It’s an honor to have them create an original release for Scion A/V.”
Osborne described Scion A/V Presents: The Bulls & The Bees as “amazing in its noisy calm intensity.” The physical release will be available at Scion Partners retail stores. For more information about the Scion Partner program and to find retail stores, visit www.scionav.com/partners.

The title track to ACCEPT’s new album Stalingrad – due out on April 6th in Europe and April 10th in North America – is available for listening in its entirety on the band’s YouTube channel.
The follow-up album to the runaway success of 2010’s Blood Of The Nations, Stalingrad’s eleven tracks were once again produced by Andy Sneap and are filled to capacity with everything that made ACCEPT famous: exceptional songwriting, soaring guitar solos, a propelling dual-guitar attack, a no-holds-barred rhythm section and chanted background vocals. Every track is destined to become a live anthem!
Guitarist Wolf Hoffman has previously stated: “We put ourselves under enormous pressure to bring out a new album right after our 180-show tour marathon, which took us two times around the globe. But we are very proud about what we delivered with Stalingrad and we hope our fans will like it as well”.
ACCEPT will be touring throughout Europe with NWOBHM label mates Hell this April and also performing in Russia.

Denver Death Metal horde, ENEMY REIGN recently completed work on their long-awaited new full-length. EntitledBetween Hell And Oblivion, the offering was recorded at Flatline Audio by Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Cephalic Carnage, Martriden, Cobalt et al) and offers up 11 tracks of mile-high Deathgrind brutality as well as the debut of vocalist, Stevie Boiser who replaced former throat, Sherwood Webber (Skinless), last Summer.
Commented the band on the output: “Between Hell And Oblivion is a huge milestone for ENEMY REIGN both as a band and for us individually. It means we didn’t give up even when we were written off, and accomplishing that feels great. Musically, we set out to refine what we feel our style of Death Metal is. We aren’t pretentious people, and this is not a pretentious album. It’s a no-nonsense Death Metal album that pays homage to all the bands we grew up with and love, while keeping an eye on how we can add our own artistic license and create something we could listen to everyday. And we do…so enjoy the reign.”
To check out, “Realm Of The Hungry Ghost” scroll on over to SickDrummer at THIS LOCATION where the track is included as part of their current Brutal Beatings E-Compilation.

DAN AND HIS WIFE CANDI HAVE TWIN SONS WITH AUTISM WHO ARE THE SUBJECT OF A DOCUMENTARY FOR SHEKNOWS.COM
_______________________________
March 1st, 2012 – Dan Spitz, founder and former guitar player for Anthrax and current creator of Red Lamb, and his wife Candi as well as their twin four-year-old boys are raising awareness of the life-changing effects of Autism by participating in this Sunday’s Walk Now for Autism Speaks at City Commons in West Palm Beach, Fla.
“Autism is what makes our children special, we do not see it as a disability. They are beautiful, intelligent, silly and we love that they see the world differently,” explains Candi Spitz, who is also on the committee for Autism Speaks. The couple’s four-year-old twin songs Autism diagnosis has given the Spitz family a mission to do all they can for not only their children but the 1 in 110 U.S. children currently diagnosed with the disease.
The entire Spitz family will be walking at the Mar. 4 Walk Now For Autism Speaks event and will film portions of a documentary on their sons at the event. The currently untitled documentary is being produced by SheKnows.com, a prominent parenting website that won both a 2010 and 2011 OMMA Award for Excellence.
Dan Spitz formed Red Lamb in 2010 and recently released a self-titled debut album co-produced with Dave Mustaine (Megadeth). Spitz and Mustaine also co-wrote the song “Puzzle Box” for the release; a video for the track is in the works with footage from Sunday’s event being included. Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson) oversaw all programming for the album. Vrenna and Spitz are also working on a side project with more details to be announced shortly. The first video from Red Lamb is for the song “The Cage,” which can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEl-takDvHM .
AVATAR – The debut full-length album, Black Waltz, from Sweden’s AVATAR was released back on February 14th, 2012, via eOne Music… and it’s hereby highly recommended by yours truly, for your Metal famished senses. Extreme vocals are prevalent from Johannes Eckerström and he essentially nails it from top to bottom. Johannes isn’t belting out Death or Black Metal tones, instead it’s all super-fine Extreme. Dark. Damn good. When Johannes does come clean with his vocals, it’s… damn good again.
The Metal itself has more grooves discharging than I could possibly count. There’s also a melodic sensibility happening big time with the Metal of AVATAR and it all comes across to me as a thrilling listening experience. Metal be thy name is this AVATAR band an unforeseen Metal prize for me in 2012. AVATAR plays some straightforward Metal, only it’s the inventiveness of the parts and the dazzling delivery of the Extreme, which all equals to the impressive Metal sum on Black Waltz. Whoa.
AVATAR implements elements into their Metal that keeps their songs interesting, (as an example) the creepy chorus as an outro for Torn Apart. Ready For The Ride is a fine Metal example of just how Extreme AVATAR can come across, this song when played at maximum level is one of the more enjoyable listening moments I’ve had with a song lately. Hell, playing Black Waltz in its entirety at maximum volume, is prescribed Metal medicine for any shitty day you or I shall encounter from here on in.
______________________________
To explain the Metal listening experience of Black Waltz, in one word, that word would be: INTENSE. Within these 11 songs on Black Waltz, I hear a band that obviously is adept in Metalcreativity and focused on quality. In Napalm and has progressive footings and still comes across with that dark feel and vibe that AVATAR wants us all to accept. Dark lyrically and musically throughout, AVATAR never has me thinking this is the “same old stuff” I’ve been listening to for years.
The title track, Use Your Tongueand Blodare three scalding exclamation points on this album. Furious. Like an Extreme, yet still, a groove driven Metal ambush from the fiery depths of hell itself. Jonas Jarlsby and Simon Andersson on guitars are damn cool to listen to. The riffs, leads and mini-solos are all unique and all importantly memorable. Let It Burn grooves along with such a convincing fire from AVATAR that it gets the “replay continuously” award for this album.
Yes, I dig AVATAR and appreciate the Metal direction that they are taking here on Black Waltz. To say that I’ve enjoyed Black Waltz as much as any Rob Zombie album ever made is real. That new Alice Cooper album from last year has nothing over on Black Waltz either. AVATAR is without question, a band not to ignore. Black Waltz is this band’s debut album that is absolutely can’t miss in 2012 and beyond. The Modern Metal doors of extremity have flung wide open… and AVATAR has arrived. Metal. Be. Thy. Name.
AVATAR:
Johannes Eckerström – Vocals
John Alfredsson – Drums
Jonas Jarlsby – Guitars
Simon Andersson – Guitars
Henrik Sandelin – Bass

As you prep your SXSW dance card, you’ll definitely want to add the Austin based duo, Not In The Face. These guys havebeen described by those in the know as; Grimy, gritty and raw – Low-Fi and boisterous with a Texas redneck attitude – blistering blues-pop – Righteous! – their songs reveal a mean streak and melodic sense that would make Paul Westerberg proud…like a punk rock Springsteen from the Deep South.

The Monkees – from back to front:Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Davy Jones.
DAVY JONES – It’s been widely reported, from numerous reputable sources, that Davy Jones has passed away today. Davy Jones was 66 years old. As is being reported, Davy Jones succumbed to a massive heart attack, in Indiantown, Florida.
Davy Jones was catapulted into stardom as a vocalist, tambourine player and television actor for The Monkees. This Pop Rock sensation of a band formed back in 1966, went on to sell multi-millions of records, while having their likeness on everything from bubble gum cards to lunch boxes.
I remember watching The Monkees television show (re-runs especially) when I was a young lad. It was a favorite of mine to watch with my sister. Those songs The Monkees played on their television show grabbed my attention at such a young age… and Davy Jones with his mannerisms and comments made me laugh too. There wasn’t a Disney Channel nor Nickelodeon back in those late 60’s or seventies, instead, we had television shows like The Monkees.
Different times decades ago, compared to today. Davy Jones entertained me on that old black and white television set my family shared. I was exposed to those fun songs from The Monkees before I ever knew about Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Yes, I grew up watching and listening to Davy Jones and The Monkees. There’s no lying about that on my part.
