BEAK ‘EYRIE’ – An Extreme, Modern and Uncompromising Post-Metal Album Debut

BEAK – Releasing on April 3rd, 2012, via Someoddpilot, is the debut album Eyrie from Chicago’s Post-Metal band – Beak. Beak isn’t a household name yet, just give them time. This band is quite adept at fusing together these five songs for an electric listening experience. This debut album flourishes with Extreme Metal both vocally and musically and tempers down with bridges that expresses signs of Beak’s progressiveness.

Angry Mother Of Bones and Hands Collide are the first two tracks and they pounced upon my cranium with reckless sonic precision. Beak plays solid, they play tight and extremely proficient. Throughout Eyrie, I am impressed by the fact this is a debut album after all. Founding members Chris Eichenseer (drums) and Jason Goldberg (bass, polivoks and vocals) do have seasoned experience from being members of the critically acclaimed Post-Rock band The Timeout Drawer.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Jon Slusher bestows plenty of believable rage while he sings. Jamey Jasta would beam if he heard Jon belt out his vocals. (Maybe Jamey already has). Hell, Beak would be a substantial opening act for Hatebreed. When it comes to Metal bands pushing the envelope of Extreme, it can sometimes sound chaotic with no destination in sight. Beak appears to have a destination with Eyrie, one that beats the snot out of my ears and has me hankering for another beating. I’ll never learn my lesson I guess.

Yes, fiery duo guitars are prevalent on Eyrie and the sound never comes across muddled. The rhythm section is a tidal wave of dynamite beats. A top-notch production all around with Eyrie, this debut album leaves me looking forward to more of this brand of Metal from Beak.

Fans of Ana Kefr to fans of The Devil Wears Prada should all find something to like about Beak. Extreme, modern and unyielding in their total impact of sound, while incorporating melodic interludes within their songs, has turned out to be a regal approach for Beak, one that should have them becoming a universal name in due time around our beloved world of Metal.

KRAMPUS – Releases Studio Diary #2

The fast rising Italian Melodic Folk Death Metal band KRAMPUS have been hard at work in the studio working on their first official release under Noise Art Records.  KRAMPUS released the highly acclaimed EP Kronos’ Heritage in 2011 which helped put them on the map. The new album is slated to be released in late 2012, and the band just released a new Studio Diary featuring the recording of guitars.

* KRAMPUS guitarists Alessandro Galliera and Leonardo Rizzi also just inked an endorsement deal with Charvel Guitars.

* KRAMPUS won the Rock the Nation 2011 Award which lead to them inking a deal with Noise Art Records.  The band has been recording at Black Mirror Studios in Udine, Italy.

CANNIBAL CORPSE – New Video Premiere ‘Encased In Concrete’ Hosted By Bloody Disgusting

HEMOPTYSIS – Nominated Twice For 11th Annual Independent Music Awards

HEMOPTYSIS – Arizona Thrashers HEMOPTYSIS have been nominated for this year’s Independent Music Awards. This marks the band’s second consecutive year being nominated and this year HEMOPTYSIS holds the honor of receiving two nominations in two categories.

The band’s critically acclaimed album, Misanthropic Slaughter is up for Best Metal/Hardcore Album and the track “M.O.D.” (the video for which can be seen at this location) is up for Best Metal/Hardcore Song. This year’s panel of judges includes Ozzy Osbourne, Tom Waits, members of GWAR, Keith Richards and many more.

In addition to the industry-selected winners, fans have until Friday, July 20th to vote for the fan-selected winners at this location.

 In additional HEMOPTYSIS news, guitarist/vocalist Masaki Murashita is set to appear on KGRG 89.9 FM’s Late Night Death radio show on Tuesday, March 13 at 10PM PST.

NILE – New Album Title Announced and 2012 Asian & U.S. Tour Dates

NILE – The reigning kings of technical, historically themed brutality, NILE, are proud to announce they are touring Asia this April/May. This marks the band’s first time in these markets and the guys are extremely excited to be playing for their Asian Metal brothers. “The whole idea of spreading NILE’s music into this part of the world has been a long time coming” commented the band. “We are extremely pleased to go to there and are looking forward to an amazing cultural exchange and experience”.

* NILE are currently in the studio wrapping up the mix of their latest effort At The Gate of Sethu with producer Neil Kernon. The album is tentatively scheduled to be released the 2nd quarter of 2012.

Arizona Death Metal legion JOB FOR A COWBOY will kick off a five-and-a-half week stretch of North American dates on this year’s Metal Alliance Tour next week. The live rituals will commence on March 15 in Austin, Texas as part of South By Southwest 2012 and consume 35 more cities through April 21. The band will be joined by headliners Devildriver, The Faceless, Dying Fetus, 3 Inches Of Blood, Impending Doom and Wretched.

In addition, the furious quintet will play double duty on March 15 as they headline Metal Blade Records’ 30th Anniversary [unofficial] SXSW day party. IMPENDING DOOM – ‘Baptized In Filth’ Is A Heightened Listen Into Some Absolute Extreme Metal

IMPENDING DOOM – Releasing on March 13th, 2012, via eOne Music is Baptized In Filth from Riverside California’s – Impending Doom. Extreme. Extreme Metal. You’re getting a magnitude of Extreme Metal with Impending Doom. This band is not sheepish on keeping the level of intensity atop a colossal barrage of blast beats, searing guitar leads, chunky riffs, quaking bass lines and wrathful vocals. Extreme. Metal.

Does Impending Doom stare down the ominous shadow of redundancy? Sure they do. Their convincing as hell when it comes to playing this fast and furious. I can feel this band’s unrestrained aggression come through quite loud and clear on Baptized In Filth, that is for sure. It takes commitment to write and play Metal this enraged. Hell yes it does. To sing as brutal as Brook Reeves does takes some Metal passion, I myself would begin to choke after singing this way for twenty seconds.

Steering away from labeling Impending Doom with “multiple genre” tags is useless. (Christian Metal and Deathcore can be thrown about). Extreme. Metal. That’s all my fellow Metal brethren need to know. This album accentuates a great deal of positives for this band, these guys have a keen sense for how an album should flow for these songs really do stack-up together fittingly. Their musicianship and obvious energy shows signs of greater things to come and yet Impending Doom have a damn fine album of songs here and now.

One thing Impending Doom should realize is “toning it down” as they did with My Light Unseen, makes sense and adds a stylistic quality about them other than full-throttle. I’d like to hear more of this side to Impending Doom in the future. This song is still hard and heavy, even with its tempo turned down a few notches. I really welcome this sound from Impending Doom, with both clean and Extreme vocals existing together.

Exploring dark themes lyrically and putting the anti-God doctrine on the witness stand, with an obvious unrelenting and aggressive musical identity, Impending Doom has created quite the heightened listen with Baptized In Filth. This being their fourth full-length, I will predict that Impending Doom will be around for many more albums to come. There’s a genuineness in this band’s collective sound that I can appreciate.

THE SUFFERING – SIGNS TO CHAOS RECORDS

MI Annex Presents: Metal Blade Records’ 30th Anniversary [unofficial] SXSW Day Party

Metal Blade Records has teamed up with Musicians InstituteAnnex (formerly Emo’s Annex) and co-sponsors ‘stache media to bring you one of the heaviest day parties devastating the streets of Austin this March, featuring JOB FOR A COWBOY, CANCER BATS, BATTLECROSS, PILGRIM, GYPSYHAWK, EARLY GRAVES and MI band TRUCELINE. The bands will be hitting the infamous 6th Street location for 6 hours of metal and hard rock, celebrating the label’s 30th Anniversary, with doors opening at 11:30am. The party will be free of charge and open to the public.

Be sure to get there early as the first 100 people in will receive a swag bag filled with goodies provided by Metal Blade Records, Indie Merch, and ‘stache media. There will also be a raffle held for some bigger ticket items, provided by Metal Blade and Indie Merch.

For the past several months amazing reviews of ABIGAIL WILLIAMS‘ Becoming have been pouring in, the new direction the band has taken on this album obviously many longtime fans’ favorite recording to date.

Clocking in at nearly an hour in length, Becoming ushers in a provocative new chapter for the ever-evolving ABIGAIL WILLIAMS. Containing six vast tracks, truly the band’s most expressive and complicated to date, Becoming was recorded in various warehouses throughout Los Angeles, with the lineup for the album including returning guitarist Ian Jekelis, studio drummer Zach Gibson (ex-The Black Dahlia Murder) and as always, vocalist/guitarist Ken Sorceron, who handled all mixing, mastering, production and engineering duties.

GRAVEYARD ‘The Altar Of Sculpted Skulls’ – Death Metal That’s Built To Kick Your Ass

GRAVEYARD – Releasing on April 17th, 2012, in North America via Pulverised Records, is this 6 song EP from GRAVEYARD aptly titled: The Altar Of Sculpted Skulls. Barcelona Spain should be extremely proud to boast they are home to this tenacious and talented Death Metal pack. Dark, groove infested and strewn with a raging wall of sound, GRAVEYARD is not a run-of-the-mill Death Metal band that wants to only shock and awe. There are melodic moments aplenty in which guitarists Bastard and SBE impress with their axes.

Yes, Bastard and SBE can shred and riff it out with extremity, they give GRAVEYARD a signature sound, coming across with an astute awareness for branding this band with memorable deadly licks and tones. Damn good players. Julkarn on bass and vocals sounds like one Death Metal dude you never want to consider messing with. Vocally guttural and coming across like a pissed off nest of Black Shield Wasps, Julkarn’s voice is Death Metal personified.

Gusi on drums administers the Death Metal punishment on his kit with both speed and precision and is damn enjoyable to listen to. Nothing intricate with Gusi, just a Death Metal blast of sound that’s authoritative with kick-ass fills. If a Death Metal fan (old or new school) that is hankering for a new album asked me what to pick up, The Altar Of Sculped Skulls would be at the top of my must own list. These members of GRAVEYARD play and sound like the seasoned Metal artists that they undeniably are.

The Altar Of Sculpted Skulls has turned out to be a Death Meal album I can’t listen to just as a “once through”, instead I let these 6 songs play a second, third and fourth time in a row. This band sucks me right into their Death Metal world of sonic brutality. Yeah, GRAVEYARD are so maniacally good and this EP stings my Metal senses so damn savagely. I won’t dispute any claim that has GRAVEYARD labeled as: Death Fucking Metal. Damn right they are. Metal be thy name.

ENEMY REIGN – Denver Death Metallers Complete New Record

Denver Death Metal horde, ENEMY REIGN recently completed work on their long-awaited new full-length. Entitled Between Hell And Oblivion, the offering was recorded at Flatline Audio by Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation, Cephalic Carnage, Martriden, Cobalt et al) and offers up 11 tracks of mile-high Deathgrind brutality as well as the debut of vocalist, Stevie Boiser who replaced former throat, Sherwood Webber (Skinless), last Summer.

Commented the band on the output: “Between Hell And Oblivion is a huge milestone for ENEMY REIGN both as a band and for us individually. It means we didn’t give up even when we were written off, and accomplishing that feels great. Musically, we set out to refine what we feel our style of Death Metal is. We aren’t pretentious people, and this is not a pretentious album. It’s a no-nonsense Death Metal album that pays homage to all the bands we grew up with and love, while keeping an eye on how we can add our own artistic license and create something we could listen to everyday. AVATAR ‘Black Waltz’ Is Dark, Extreme, Modern and Groove Laden… Metal Bliss

AVATAR – The debut full-length album, Black Waltz, from Sweden’s AVATAR was released back on February 14th, 2012, via eOne Music… and it’s hereby highly recommended by yours truly, for your Metal famished senses. Extreme vocals are prevalent from Johannes Eckerström and he essentially nails it from top to bottom. Johannes isn’t belting out Death or Black Metal tones, instead it’s all super-fine Extreme. Dark. Damn good. When Johannes does come clean with his vocals, it’s… damn good again.

The Metal itself has more grooves discharging than I could possibly count. There’s also a melodic sensibility happening big time with the Metal of AVATAR and it all comes across to me as a thrilling listening experience. Metal be thy name is this AVATAR band an unforeseen Metal prize for me in 2012. AVATAR plays some straightforward Metal, only it’s the inventiveness of the parts and the dazzling delivery of the Extreme, which all equals to the impressive Metal sum on Black Waltz. Whoa.

AVATAR implements elements into their Metal that keeps their songs interesting, (as an example) the creepy chorus as an outro for Torn Apart. Ready For The Ride is a fine Metal example of just how Extreme AVATAR can come across, this song when played at maximum level is one of the more enjoyable listening moments I’ve had with a song lately. Hell, playing Black Waltz in its entirety at maximum volume, is prescribed Metal medicine for any shitty day you or I shall encounter from here on in.

To explain the Metal listening experience of Black Waltz, in one word, that word would be: INTENSE. Within these 11 songs on Black Waltz, I hear a band that obviously is adept in Metal creativity and focused on quality. In Napalm and has progressive footings and still comes across with that dark feel and vibe that AVATAR wants us all to accept. Dark lyrically and musically throughout, AVATAR never has me thinking this is the “same old stuff” I’ve been listening to for years.

The title track, Use Your Tongue and Blod are three scalding exclamation points on this album. Furious. Like an Extreme, yet still, a groove driven Metal ambush from the fiery depths of hell itself. Jonas Jarlsby and Simon Andersson on guitars are damn cool to listen to. The riffs, leads and mini-solos are all unique and all importantly memorable. Let It Burn grooves along with such a convincing fire from AVATAR that it gets the “replay continuously” award for this album.

Yes, I dig AVATAR and appreciate the Metal direction that  they are taking here on Black Waltz. To say that I’ve enjoyed Black Waltz as much as any Rob Zombie album ever made is real. That new Alice Cooper album from last year has nothing over on Black Waltz either. AVATAR is without question, a band not to ignore. Black Waltz is this band’s debut album that is absolutely can’t miss in 2012 and beyond. The Modern Metal doors of extremity have flung wide open… and AVATAR has arrived. Metal. Be. Thy. Name.

Masaki Murashita – Hemoptysis Guitarist / Front Man Featured In Providence Cables Demonstration Videos

Hemoptysis guitarist and front man Masaki Murashita has done a series of nine demonstration videos for Providence Cables, all of which can be viewed at www.providence.jp. 
In addition to an introductory piece, a total of eight videos are included with Murashita discussing the original concepts, ideas, and the characteristics of each specific model.

English and Japanese language versions of the videos are available, the latter of which will be placed in music instrument stores nationwide in Japan this spring. Some of the acclaimed artists that have used the guitar cables include Carl Verheyen, Larry Carlton, Michael Landau, and Ramon Goose.
