Heavy Metal Thoughts To Ponder, As We Enter October Of 2011…

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on September 30, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Like most Metalheads, I think about and listen to Heavy Metal quite often. Many times my brain makes up these “thoughts to ponder”, only it is never any fun pondering them by myself. Therefore, today being the last day of September 2011, I am letting the world know what current Heavy Metal thoughts I am pondering! Take a look below, to see if maybe you would like to “ponder” them with me.

01The X Factor (USA) is on Fox! Who gives a crap about this show if your into Heavy Metal or Hard Rock? This is just another televised anti-Heavy Music talent show to find the next pre-teen and teen idol that can’t sing a damn lick of Pop manure. Hollywood doesn’t care if you can’t sing, as long as you have that “perfect face” and skinny body. As far as the “older dudes” that audition for this show, it’s the same thing: bubble gum.

02Nevermind by the legendary Nirvana has been reissued this past Tuesday, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of its release. I bought the cassette of Nevermind when it was released back in 1991. I always felt Nirvana was a great band and Nevermind was a great album. That’s it, folks. That album is NOT the Holy Grail of Rock music history. ElvisThe BeatlesThe Who, Led ZeppelinBlack Sabbath, KISS, RUSH and The Ramones already came and conquered, way in advance of Nevermind, sorry to say. I never checked in my loyalty to Heavy Metal card at the door, just due to a band coming out of (Seattle) Aberdeen, Washington and decided to mix Punk, Hard Rock and Alternative Rock together.

03 – By the way, Grunge never killed Heavy Metal. Nope. Back in those early 1990’s, the press decided to not cover Heavy Metal while the record companies decided Seattle was the gateway to Rock and Roll’s Atlantis. Whose face has egg on it now?

04 – If I read one more article about how there will no longer be CD’s manufactured in “five years”, I think I’m gonna jump out of my skin. Regardless, there is a “genius” that pops up every week, somewhere, that decides they are gonna remind us all about how terrible the CD is and how this music medium will be wiped off the face of the planet.

That’s it. Those are my Heavy Metal thoughts to ponder. I wish I could list more, yet I won’t. Why not list more? Well, the two blogging books I’ve been reading recently state: keep your posts short, simple and to the point. Screw the blogging books. Here is one more Bonus Heavy Metal thought to ponder!

BONUS – Who are Rufus with Chaka Khan? It sounds like some high caloric dish you would order from a pricey restaurant in New York City. Despite my being confused, they were nominated for induction into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for 2012. I realize that KISS pisses off The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for some crazy reason, still, Carmine Appice, Cheap Trick, The Moody Blues, RUSHThe Doobie Brothers and many other qualifying and REAL legends of ROCK AND ROLL are not nominated and Rufus with Chaka Khan is? Metal be thy name.

LONG LIVE HEAVY METAL AND REAL ROCK & ROLL.

Rest In Peace, Kurt Cobain.

GEORGE LYNCH – Influential and legendary guitarist and songwriter – George Lynch, aka “Mr. Scary” turns 57 years young today. George Lynch was born on September 28th, 1954. Happy Birthday George!

George Lynch has had an amazing career in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, with his notable tenure as Dokken’s lead guitarist being an important chapter in Heavy Metal and Hard Rock history. George’s post Dokken career is yet another standout chapter in Heavy Music history. George has enjoyed much admirable success with his Heavy Metal/Hard Rock band Lynch Mob along with his highly respected solo career.

Back on July 19th, 2011, the brand new George Lynch album Kill All Control was released. This blazingly Hard Rockin’ and Heavy Hittin’ album features the virtuosic guitar of George Lynch, while boasting the vocals of: Marc TorienWill Marten and Keith St. John.

I once had the pleasure to interview George Lynch back in 2010 for Rob Rockitt’s industry-wide respected Hard Rock Hideout. To say George was a genuine and nice guy while we conversed is an underestimation. PUDDLE OF MUDD – RE:(DISC)OVERED: A ROCKIN’ COOL TRIBUTE TO 11 TIMELESS SONGS

Posted in classic rock, cover songs, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

PUDDLE OF MUDD – Cover song albums have been and forever will be a debatable topic. Is it a “good move” on the part of a band or individual musician to cover a “particular” song or (gasp) record an entire album of them? As I see it, at the end of the day it’s all about the music and cover songs are (supposed) to celebrate the original song without destroying it’s structural foundation. That’s my Metal opinion on the Metal matter and it is an endless discussion for certain. Lead guitarist Paul Phillips states it perfectly within this album’s liner notes: “Our goal in interpreting these songs was to pay more tribute rather than reinvent”. With that gabby intro of mine out-of-the-way, Puddle Of Mudd released an 11 song album of covers back on August 29th, 2011 via MRI/Arms Division that’s called: Re:(disc)overed.

Actually, the title of this cover song album is quite fitting for me, for Puddle Of Mudd has made me rediscover these songs that are undisputeded Rock classics. Over time, as I’ve read and conducted many an interview with musicians, the undeniable truth is that they are fans of music too. Musicians are artists and they can unquely re-package an already established Rock song, which in turn (hopefully) brings new life to such established songs. Making younger generations of Rock fans aware of the classics is so important, the roots of Rock can never be forgotten. Puddle Of Mudd have not only paid tribute to songs that mean something to them here, they have also given these 11 songs a substantial relevant vibe that I cannot resist.

This cover song album has grown on me like there is no tomorrow and I’m very glad I decided to buy it. I bought Re:(disc)overed without hearing a single sample or track beforehand, knowing that Puddle Of Mudd has no choice other than to deliver the goods. Honestly, I never expected to like all 11 songs and deep down inside of me I feel relieved that Puddle Of Mudd pulled this one off! This is an album that makes me feel so damn proud to be infatuated with Rock and Roll. As I listen to T.N.T., I really do hear a sincere admiration that Wes Scantlin has for the late and legendary Bon Scott.

After hearing the recent Redlight King cover of Neil Young’s Old Man, albeit with a sample style, I was blown away to realize that Puddle Of Mudd has also rediscovered such a monumentally historic Rock song too. I don’t know how Puddle Of Mudd did it here, yet their cover of Old Man doesn’t seem to be as depressing as it was originally meant to be by Neil Young himself. Maybe Puddle Of Mudd made Old Man sound more reflective than just plain sad? My hands down favorite cover here is Shelter Me. The Rolling Stones should send Puddle Of Mudd a congratulations card in the mail for the way they present and play their iconic song. Just fabulous.

I feel Billy Squier has too often been overlooked for his legacy of Hard Rock. With Everybody Wants You, Puddle Of Mudd makes certain this Rocker gets his proper Hard Rockin’ due. It’s funny, how hearing this cover of Everybody Wants You, it all reminds me of when I used to jump around the house to the original song as a banana brained young teen. Rocket Man has Puddle Of Mudd stamped all over it and still this band did not insult one single note of Elton John’s creation. Just an extraordinary Rock classic among the 11 others I am continuing to enjoy on Re:(disc)overed. In my Metal opinion, you should discover Re:(disc)overed, especially if you love and cherish the roots of Rock like I do. Puddle Of Mudd has proven to me, with this album, their reverence for Rock’s classic songs and artists.

GOTTHARD – “Homegrown – Alive In Lugano” Trailer! A Live Album Of Sentimental And Historic Importance For This Band

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, hard rock bands, hard rock news, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 19, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

The release of GOTTHARD’s live album “Homegrown – Alive in Lugano“ is coming closer and with that also the unavoidable ending of an era within the band’s history – the era of Steve Lee.

The recordings of the concert which took place on the 17th of July 2010 in Lugano – the band’s home town – portray one of the last shows with the charismatic exceptional singer before his tragical accidental death later that year and will occupy a special position in GOTTHARD’s complete works always and evermore.

Bassist Marc Lynn puts the album’s magic into moving words: ”Lugano was where it all began and so the circle is closed of all that we’ve experienced with our friend Steve Lee. The memories of the past 20 years on stage with Steve are brought again to life intensively with this album. They reflect the memorable times that we were able to enjoy on the Mount Olympus of Rock’n’Roll.“

The enclosed bonus DVD shows chosen recordings of another historical concert of GOTTHARD: On the 31st of December 1999, the rock group played a gig over the course of the millennium – which also took place on the local piazza in Lugano and can be seen as one of the band’s most exceptional shows to date.

The album will be released on September 30, on Nuclear Blast Records!

Currently, GOTTHARD are still in search of a new singer, but soon a new chapter of the band’s history will be opened…

* Homegrown – Alive In Lugano will be released on October 11th, 2011 in North America.

LONG LIVE GOTTHARD.

Rest In Peace, Steve Lee.

THE POODLES “I Want It All” – This Song and Music Video… Indubitably ROCKS!

Posted in glam metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, rock music videos with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THE POODLES – The song I Want It All by Sweden’s very famous Hard Rockin’ and Heavy Metalin’ band, The Poodles, has it all. Uplifting with its melodic vibrations and inspirational with its lyrics, I Want It All is a song that has motivated me recently, while trying to deal with crap that life sometimes throws my way. Take a listen to I Want It All for yourself below and maybe this is the song you need to pick yourself up with today.

I Want It All is the opening track from The Poodles 4th studio album: Performocracy. I’ve written before about this Performocracy album and I can’t recommend it highly enough. In my Metal opinion, The Poodles have released one of the years best in Melodic Heavy Metal/Hard Rock albums. Jakob Samuel on vocals is as underrated as they come and this band plays some damn memorable songs on Performocracy.

Performocracy was released in North America on May 3rd, 2011, via FRONTIERS RECORDS.

Breaking News: Target Is Now Selling (Some) CD’s For Five Dollars!

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, retail, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 12, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Yes, you did read the headline correctly. Target is just now realizing their overpriced CD’s are obviously not selling, therefore this retail giant has decided that $5 CD’s are the road to profitable glory. Oh, Target. While your $12.99, $13.99 and $14.99 price points for new and old CD releases were not making waves with cash strapped consumers, the $5.00, $7.00, $9.00 and $10.00 prices for CD’s at Super Walmart were. So, the brainiacs at Target decided to take a look at their #1 competitor and realized, hey, we can sell $5 CD’s too! Um, wrong. I’ll tell you all why…

Super Walmart has been selling hundreds of different CD titles at $5 per for the last few years now. The selection is always rotating as each week passes by too. Selection is key here for its selection that Target is lacking with both their $5 and overpriced CD’s. As I walked the meager CD aisles of Target the other night, I stumbled upon their $5 selection of CD’s and it was NOT impressive. I chuckled. I nearly pissed my pants. Maybe there were 12 titles to choose from. That’s it. The two $5 CD’s I saw at Target worth mentioning here were:

STYX – The Grand Illusion

WHITESNAKE – 20th Century Masters

Granted, both the Styx and Whitesnake CD’s are worthy of purchasing for $5, I bought them both for this price at Super Walmart about three years ago! Both are ultra legendary bands. Oh Target. You’re like the dude that’s late for the keg party and misses out on all the action. Plus you’re that same dude who brings the stale, warm beer to the party while wearing a Culture Club t-shirt and expects everyone to dig him. Get real. Get with the times. Get a damn decent selection of $5 CD’s for Metal sakes.

Oh, Target. You see, at least 9 out of 10 of your “projected consumers of Rock CD’s” already own these two titles! Can you spell: marketing research? Duh. Duh again. To quote an old wise man: “crap or get off the pot”. Two words for Target when it comes to selling their scant selection of $5 CD’s: copy cats. Even then, Target can’t even copy Super Walmart correctly! Target continues to sell new and old CD releases for their ridiculous high prices, thinking that a dozen or so $5 CD’s is gonna make them competitive with Super Walmart. As Steven Tyler of Aerosmith has sung: Dream On.

Take into account that Target is recently embarking on a “new look” with the intent of having a (gulp) bigger, better and bolder grocery store within their existing stores, (complete with a produce department) and the “copy cat fever” has hit the melting point! Oh, Target. Y’all have what’s called Super Walmart-itis. Here’s a couple of suggestions for the brainiacs over at Target’s marble and ivory tower:

1. Change your store name. Change it already. Change it to either: Better Late Than Never or Copy Cats.

Then…

2. Keep your annoying red Target logo, only add a picture of a donkey’s ass in the center of its bulls-eye.

Heeeee Haaaaw, Heeeee Haaaaw.

9 CHAMBERS – Debut S/T: Pump Up The Volume On This Hard Rock Stunner!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, modern rock, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on September 9, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Greg Hampton (vocals, guitar & producer) and Ed Mundell (guitar) have joined Rockin’ forces to create 9 Chambers, recruiting Jorgen Carlsson (bass) and Vinny Appice (drums) to seal the deal on this Hard Rock titan of a band. These musicians have seemed to set aside their past accolades and industry status, while instead they ventured to use their Rockin’ talents like hungry musicians looking to make their mark for the very first time. This 9 Chambers debut is fourteen songs that are memorable and relevant, with quality and consistency being their Hard Rock standard.

I look upon this 9 Chambers album for its several strengths that it bestows: songwriting, lyrics, musicianship and the uncanny accomplishment of intertwining a wealth of sounds representing a palette of genres, from Stoner to Modern, which in turn all lends this album its strong and unique character. With that said, the one constant on 9 Chambers is it being a Hard Rock experienceBury Yourself has the psychedelic vibe happening with a hardened and modern edge. If you’re looking for a song to Rock your face off, this is the one. Can’t Turn Your Back is a mid-tempo Rocker that showcases 9 Chambers as a band that can deliver the Hard Rock goods on both a heavy and laid back level. A ballad with muscle is another way to describe this cool song.

My favorite song on this album is All But Done. I had to pick that one song that has absolutely Rocked my boring and rain-soaked world, rescuing me from a post Hurricane Irene syndrome. Greg’s vocals, coupled with the insane guitar chops and thumping rhythmic beats, so solidly accentuates the totality of coolness that All But Done resonates. It’s a thrill a second, while I listen to the duo guitars of Greg and Ed throughout this album. As they swap leads, riffs and solos, the Rockin’ vibes are felt from two guitarists that believe in the music they are playing and come across as believing in each other. Ed has obviously adapted to his post Monster Magnet life, capturing some axe slinging juju in a bottle and calling it his own.

I was impressed before on the multi-instrumental and vocal talents of Greg Hampton. His last band called The New Czars, released a Modern/Industrial Hard Rock statement I’ll forever admire known as Doomsday Revolution. This time around, I’m more impressed with what Greg Hampton has achieved on all levels, with his vocals sounding notably more confident (kick ass) and relaxed while fronting 9 Chambers. Greg is a singer that knows his limits, he has a classic voice that can adapt to the multi-genres of Rock that 9 Chambers taps into.

Greg vocally exhibits the skillful ability to carry a heavy song. Indeed The Sun is a shining moment for Greg vocally and I can’t resist getting psyched out while listening to this song. Indeed The Sun has everything going for it, with abundant guitar licks and a fired-up rhythm section as well. Harmonious and modern tones appear to come very natural for Greg and Use U Up exemplifies my point. Mid-paced and resonating with an AOR vibe, Use U Up can be a candidate for Rock radio in my Metal opinion. I’ll leave vocal comparisons aside, saying that as a vocalist on this album Greg has once again: reached up high and pulled the sun from the sky.

Vinny Appice is always a delight to listen to on drums. With Jorgen Carlsson on bass this is as accomplished a rhythm section as you’re going to hear in Hard Rock or Rock. Darker Side Of Sunshine accentuates the musical strengths that Vinny and Jorgen bring to 9 Chambers. A justifiably Heavy, Modern Rock song that jams so steadily along. It’s one of those songs I wish would carry on for twenty minutes, it’s that Rockin’ delicious. To create an album of Hard Rock songs and make it sound so incredibly complete is quite an admirable accomplishment of 9 Chambers. I give a Metal salute to the songwriting prowess of Greg and Ed, creating Hard Rock this damn cool is sincerely something else.

9 Chambers has successfully executed their Hard Rock edict with their debut album. Hard Rock fans of any generation should get into the Hard Rockin’ world of 9 Chambers now and escape away from the cut and paste albums that you may find coming at you. Classes for Hard Rock Appreciation 101 begins the moment you listen to this album. 9 Chambers is a Hard Rock album that I easily rank as one of the years best and hopefully the first of many more to come from this dynamic band.

I’ll ring that Metal bell, raise my fists to the air and blow an F’n kiss to the sky. Why?  For 9 Chambers is a band and album I can’t possibly deny. Metal be thy name.

High River Sauces Releases Chris Caffery’s Tears of The Sun Hot Sauce

Lead guitarist Chris Caffery (TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA & SAVATAGE) has collaborated with High River Sauces to release an amazing gourmet hot sauce called Tears of The Sun. This sauce is a deliciously dangerous blend of habanero peppers and tropical fruit. Your taste buds are greeted by the sweetness, then rising like the sun on a hot summer day, the heat settles in to make this truly a unique sauce. If your food is crying for help… it’s crying for some Tears of the Sun!

The Tears of The Sun Hot Sauce will be released on September 12th and can be pre ordered on the High River Sauces website at http://highriversauces.com/main/shop-hr/. Each bottled pre ordered will be personally signed by Chris Caffery.

High River Sauces will also have a booth at this years 16th Annual Chile Pepper Food Festival in Bowers, PA on September 9th and 10th. (http://pepperfestival.com/Chile_2011/Home.htmlCaffery will be attending the festival on Saturday September 10th from 1 PM to 5 PM to do a signing and a  showcase tasting for Tears of The Sun.

“Ever since my first world tour in 1987 I have been on a global hunt for great hot sauces. About six years ago I began making my own. Trial and error led me to a sauce that had something very unique. My fellow band and crew members loved it so much I would actually make batches in catering on my recent tours. I am truly excited to finally be able to share Tears of The Sun with fellow chili heads” states Caffery about his inspiration behind his newest craft.

High River Sauces was created by music industry veteran, food junkie and Heavy Metal Cookbook author Steve “Buckshot” Seabury. His cookbook titled “Mosh Potatoes – Recipes, Anecdotes & Mayhem From The Heavyweights Of Heavy Metal” (Simon & Schuster) is a collection of recipes from the biggest names in Hard Rock & Heavy Metal.

High River Sauces also had 3 different hot sauces that were available exclusively on this summer’s Willie Nelson Throwdown Country Tour (Hillbilly Hellfire Hot Sauce), the Vans Warped Tour (King Scott Hot Sauce) and the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival (The Devils Blood Hot Sauce). Each hot sauce is an artisan sauce that promises to give fans who love fiery foods a unique culinary experience. Each recipe captures the finest ingredients, variety of spices and the hottest of peppers to bring you the exceptional blend of heat and balance of expressive flavor.

SEBASTIAN BACH – Kicking & Screaming: Heavy Metal Hallelujah! This Album ROCKS!

Posted in arena rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on September 5, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Sebastian Bach Kicking & Screaming – I love those cherished moments when a Rock N’ Roll hero is reborn. In the Metal case of Sebastian Bach, a Heavy Metal hero is reborn. The second solo album from Sebastian Bach, Kicking & Screaming, is to be released on September 23rd, 2011 via Frontiers Records. Better mark your Metal calendar for this one… cause it’s a blazing trip of melodic and dark edged Heavy Metal that kicks more ass than a pissed-off parochial school nun on steroids. Welcome back Sebastian, even if you never left the damn building after all!

If the title track Kicking & Screaming doesn’t knock your brains around in a whirlwind of Heavy Metal euphoria, then My Own Worst Enemy is gonna drop a flyin’ and Heavy Rockin’ elbow upon your Heavy Metal starved cranium. This album never seems to hold back a damn ounce of psyched-out fuel, making the high-octane experience, of listening to an entire Heavy Metal album once again… very much in vogue. Sebastian Bach can also take a Metal bow and know that he is once again, without a doubt from this Metalhead, one of our genre’s finest vocalists. His voice is a musical instrument, one which carries Kicking & Screaming to it’s profound psyche-out-nation heights.

Sebastian can snarl and scream with the very best of ’em, while also singing harmoniously through melodic and heavy Rockers: Caught In A DreamAs Long As I Got The Music and I’m Alive. If not for this being 2011, these three songs would be FM radio favorites and hit singles chart toppers. All the hot gals in their cougar spandex shall dance in the streets once again and shake their foundations! Sebastian Bach has brought back that damn fever of Arena Heavy Metal being a dominant force in the air once again! Metal be thy name and ring that F’n Metal bell… cause Sebastian Bach has told all the poser Rock and bubble gum Pop to go straight to hell!

Yes, Sebastian brings on the hard & heavy and with authority on Dirty Power. This song has the guitar muscle and rhythmic speed of a runaway Harley, being commandeered by the mighty vocals of Sebastian as it rips and erupts with what I consider Heavy Metal splendor. Nick Sterling never seems to give his guitar or bass a breather throughout this album of pumped-up Heavy Rockin’ ecstasy. Nick can shred. Nick can play. ‘Nuff said. The only breather for Nick on guitar is when John 5 steps in to lend his legendary licks on Tunnelvision. I’ll say that this song is so good it’s damn scary. A Heavy Metal song to get your head bangin’ and fists pumpin’ into the air… while Sebastian is screaming and crooning his Metal lovin’ heart out.

Bobby Jarzombek on drums is spot-on and such an insane listen. Sebastian Bach is complimented perfectly by Bobby’s drumming, bringing back those days when Heavy Metal wasn’t focused on blast beats and psychotic speed in order to sound bad-ass. Kicking & Screaming is bad-ass. Okay, is there a moment that is mellow on this album? Yes and it’s called Dream Forever. An up-tempo ballad that has me blushing cause I like the damn melody. Metal be thy name I’m becoming a ballad freak in my near golden years. Call them hot girls over wearing them cougar spandex… cause I want to see them all cry while they listen to Dream Forever.

Tell all the people who you see… Sebastian Bach has super revived a sound that once was thought to be extinct during the 90’s and has injected more modern-day relevance into his Metal than you could ever imagine. Play One Good Reason extremely loud and then give me one good reason as to why Kicking & Screaming is not a shining moment for Heavy Metal in 2011. Sebastian Bach’s second solo album has all the ingredients for my bellowing: must buy and crank it up insanely loud all you Metalhead mutha’s!

Now… I just have to convince my wife to dig out her ol’ cougar spandex… rrrrraaaawwwrrrrr

Toto and Jefferson Starship – My Early FM Radio Introduction To Melodic Hard Rock

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, melodic rock, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

During the late 70’s I was just a kid and (almost) ready to become a teenager. I’ve written before that I did not own many cool albums in the late 70’s. ELO (Out Of The Blue), Foreigner (S/T), Foreigner (Double Vision), KISS (Double Platinum), KISS (Dynasty), Paul Stanley (KISS – solo album) and Cheap Trick (At Budokan) were really the only albums I owned going into 1980.

I had some cool 45’s. Queen and Bad Company come to mind. Really. I was twelve years old in 1978 and just happy with what I had. My main source for finding out about new and “old” Rock Music (besides American Bandstand and Soul Train) was the mighty FM dial on my beloved radio.

Many of us know how it was to listen to FM back in the day. It was exhilarating to say the least. No MTV. No internet with youtube and band websites. Streaming music was stuff of science fiction back then. I hate sounding old, yet those late 70’s were the good old days. My FM radio I had received as a Christmas gift from my parents, when I was in sixth grade, was pure Rock N’ Roll gold to me back then.

I try to tell my daughters about how things used to be and they just giggle and shake their heads at me. They can’t picture a world without the internet being their #1 source for music. I can’t blame them at all. I used to shake my head at my Dad too, especially when he would tell me that a double-feature at the movies only cost a quarter.

I recently had two Classic Rock songs that began playing in my head, (no, not at the same time). These two songs I vividly remember hearing on the Connecticut FM stations: WCCC, WHCN and WPLR for years, stretching right into the 80’s and beyond. During those last two years of the 70’s decade, these two songs were a grand introduction of Melodic Hard Rock/AOR to my young ears. Here they are:

JEFFERSON STARSHIP – Jane (Freedom At Point Zero – 1979)

I remember when I first heard Mickey Thomas singing Jane and I was in awe that a guy could sing such high notes. I only thought Freddie Mercury could do that back then. Hey… my young ears weren’t introduced to Rob Halford just yet. Jane popped into my head and it made me realize that this song justifiably Rocks for me, after all these decades. I kinda get psyched out when I still hear it.

Side notes: Rock Music is also a damn cool Rockin’ song too. The amazing thing about this Jefferson Starship album is: I’ve never owned it! Hey… it doesn’t come cheap on CD right now either. Apparently Freedom At Point Zero is out of print. Try $40 (U.S.) used and $70 (U.S.) new. Those are the current prices on Amazon.com. Whoa!

TOTO – (S/T – 1978)

When I used to hold my FM radio up to my ears late at night, all those years ago, I would pray that Hold The Line would be the next song played. What is it about Hold The Line that makes it not lose its Rockin’ appeal? It’s a song that has been played on FM radio (and now) Classic Rock FM stations a million times since 1978. Now, every time I hear it, I get pumped up. I summarize that this song is obviously timeless… for me. I’m certain there are those of you who might agree.

Side Notes: Unlike Freedom at Point Zero, I didn’t let this Toto album get away. I never owned this Toto debut album on vinyl. Yes, it did take me years to finally buy it on CD too. If my Metal memory serves me correct, I bought this Toto CD back in 2000. Whoa! After listening to this entire Toto album, all I kept wondering to myself was: what in the hell took me so long to buy this incredible album of quality Classic Rock? Go figure.

LONG LIVE TOTO & JEFFERSON STARSHIP.

Queensrÿche – 10 Great Songs CD: A Potent Compilation Spanning A Legendary Discography

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 27, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Queensrÿche – A brand new greatest hits compilation spanning the legendary discography from Queensrÿche was released on June 14h, 2011, via Capitol Records. This new Queensrÿche compilation is titled 10 Great Songs. I won’t argue that these are truly, “10 Great Songs” from this iconic band! 10 Great Songs is a running series on Capitol Records, where many other bands are having their greatest hits compiled and released as well. This is a cool compilation series that Capitol Records has embarked on, especially if you want those 10 songs that a band is most famously known for.

I stumbled upon this CD while conducting my weekly walk-through of the CD aisle at my local Super Walmart. I already own The Best Of Queensrÿche: Sign Of The Times (Capitol/2007) along with each of their studio albums, therefore did I buy this 10 Great Songs CD? Um, okay, yes I did buy it. You see, once I saw it on the rack, with a $5 (U.S.) price sticker on it, I grabbed it. $5 new! Heck, the cover photo of Queensrÿche on this 10 Great Songs has never been on any other album of theirs… to the best of my Metal knowledge. Throw in that fact that I am very weak at saying “no” to purchasing any CD of a core favorite band of mine and I’m cooked. Just stick a Metal fork in me.

Queensrÿche has 12 studio albums in their storied discography, (with 2007’s Take Cover being a cover song album). When deciding upon which songs best represent the legendary Metal career of Queensrÿche, compilation producer Michael Murphy has nailed it down… and the track listing here is very impressive. (See track listing below). Queen Of The Reich and The Lady Wore Black will always be my sentimental favorites, for these are the two songs that kick-started the career of Queensrÿche, both appearing on their debut S/T EP from 1983.

I’ve seen this Queensrÿche CD selling new for $6.97 (U.S.) on Amazon.com. That’s practically $2 more than what Super Walmart is selling it for… plus you have to pay a shipping cost on Amazon.com too. Yes, Stone is a Metal bargain hunter, even if I do buy CD’s with songs that I already own on them. Metal be thy name.
