SALTY DOG – Every Dog Has Its Day: This Hard Rockin’ Album From 1990 Has Its Day On Metal Odyssey

SALTY DOG – Going back to 1990, here is a band that I Rocked out to and was reminded about while rummaging through my “vintage” cassette collection late last night: Salty Dog. I remember buying the cassette for Every Dog Has Its Day instead of the CD due to my not having a CD player in my car. Cassette players in cars ruled the day back then. Heck, back in 1990, who did have a CD player in their car? No one in my crowd!

Holding onto the cassettes of my past enables me to go back in time and listen to albums that I never upgraded to CD. Many of my cassettes are not even available on CD either due to the “out-of-print” syndrome that seems to affect so many cool bands and albums of decades past. My apologies for often times overstating this annoying music industry fact.

Salty Dog may have been ahead of their time or time was just standing still for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in 1990. Take your pick. The Rockin’ tenure for Salty Dog was 1986 to 1991, with Every Dog Has Its Day being their album of note. Looking back, 1990 was not a generous time for up and coming bands of Heavy Music. With that said, there were and always will be an audience of fans and supporters for the kind of hard-edged Rock and Roll Salty Dog created and played. I’m living proof and I know I’m not alone.

Every Dog Has Its Day was originally released on Geffen Records in 1990. That was a tough year and time period for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands, with so many record labels looking for the next Nirvana. I wonder out loud, just how popular this Salty Dog album would be if it were “newly” released today? Gambling with my guess, I’m leaning towards Every Dog Has Its Day as being a hit. Why not? The Bluesy, Hard Rockin’ sound of Salty Dog should be appealing to the Hard Rock, Arena Rock and Classic Rock fans of 2011.

This is an old school, party till it’s four in the morning album… that comes with a spinning back kick of Hard Rockin’ relevance. (To my ears anyways). I remember the song Come Along like it was yesterday and it’s easily my favorite on this album. I looked up the availability of Every Dog Has Its Day on Amazon.com and used copies are available for around $13 (U.S.). Trust me, these “used” CD prices for this title go even higher! However, new or unopened copies of this original CD fetch a far bigger price: upwards to around $100 (U.S.). A 2010 reissue on a label called Bad Reputation has the new price floating at the $30 level (U.S.).

For a one album band, Salty Dog is surely remembered as delivering some memorable Rockin’ goods. Check ’em out by picking up this CD. Only get it at a decent price!

MASS “Voices In The Night” – Revisiting A Hard Rockin’ and Feel Good Album From 1989

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 8, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

MASS – Among the 80’s resurgence of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands these last several years, there is one band from that era that cannot be overlooked. This band is from Boston, Massachusetts and their world known as MASS.

This band’s strong and memorable contributions to 80’s Hard Rock and Heavy Metal are forever forged on their 1984 debut & self-titled EP, along with three other albums from that loud, proud and colorful 80’s decade. One such album from MASS that I’ve been listening to (non-stop it seems) since this past Winter is 1989’s Voices In The Night.

Released on Enigma Records and produced by the legendary Michael Sweet, of the also legendary Stryper, Voices In The Night is a triple threat of: Hard Rockin’, feel good and elevated vibes. Yes, I do feel good listening to this album and it only seems to become elevated with each passing song. For those unfamiliar, MASS plays hard and heavy in the vein of Stryper, Steelheart, Slaughter and Nelson. MASS sold their share of records back in the 80’s and even made it on the rotation of a music network that used to be cool, known as MTV.

The vocals of Louis St. August are tailor-made for Arenas on this album… and still are in 2011. Where Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe has a pissed-off flair vocally and Tom Keifer of Cinderella always bestows a bluesy vibe with his voice, Louis St. August displays that assured, energetic and commanding vocal style. Louis gives the songs on Voices In The Night that elevated atmosphere; it’s his tones, range and notes he hits that dictates the highs you can obviously hear and actually feel.

As with every band, the debate will surface as to which album is their finest in their discography. I’m not aiming for Voices In The Night to be declared their best work, what I am pointing out however, is Voices In The Night is an album that should be remembered for its overall late 80’s hard and heavy luster, coupled with its melodic appeal and strength of songs. Metal be thy name, if this album was newly released today, it would be noticed for its old school glow and Classic Rock relevance. Well, in my Metal opinion, of course.

The ballad Chance For Love is realistically one of the finest of its kind, spanning Hard Rock to Hair Metal, from the mid to late 80’s. I’m no ballad freak, still Chance For Love makes me realize that when done with an acute awareness of not going overboard on the sappy meter; a band can achieve excellence with some Rockin’ tenderness. Uh, oh… Stone is in trouble now, I’m revealing my softer side. On songs such as the title track and Nine Tonight, the tempo is high, the rhythm section grooves, while the guitar of Gene D’Itria crunches out melodic licks and head banging’ riffs. In essence, that can easily sum up this entire album. One song that Gene flat-out shreds on is Staying Alive. Metal as my witness, it’s a cool song.

The chorus in these songs are not just harmonious, they are undeniably sing-along. Reach For The Sky is one song that never fails to have me pumping my fist into the air while (trying) to sing along to. Louis makes it sound so easy as he sings Carry Your Heart, he more than likely was born with that confidence factor. Carry Your Heart is an edgier song, with a psyche-you-out guitar solo that beckons me to play some vintage air guitar. Miles Away can be pointed out as an anthem on this album, one that can supercharge the Metal senses into indestructible mode, with its music alone.

Overall, Voices In The Night has an old school echo happening within its wall of sound and I’m not whining about it. The semi-rawness that this album radiates only makes the songs sound more real and fortified with a Hard Rockin’ punch. With a Christian Metal approach to positive reinforcement, I can’t see how this album couldn’t make anyone’s mood better. Then again, not everyone will like what Stone digs. Seasoned MASS fans already know this, yet new recruits to this band should be informed the following: Voices In The Night is an album to be revisited, enjoyed, Rocked out by and recommended to fellow Rockaholics.

* Voices In The Night was reissued by Retrospect Records in 2008, with the bonus track: Stevie.

DESALMADO – Hereditas: This Is Grindcore, This Is Extreme Metal… That Decimates The Senses

Posted in extreme music, grindcore, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 7, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

DESALMADO – On August 16h, 2011, via Greyhaze Records, Brazilian Grindcore band DESALMADO will have their Hereditas EP released as a 10″ vinyl and digital download. DESALMADO are from São Paulo, Brazil, being well known around South America over recent years under the name El Fuego. This Hereditas EP is the precursor to their forthcoming debut full-length, being produced by Jean Dolabella of Sepultura and is set for release via Greyhaze Records later in 2011.

The total running time for the six songs digested on Hereditas is fifteen minutes… and it’s fifteen minutes of 200% Grindcore savagery in all of it’s ruthless enormity. Metal be thy name, if you are looking to get your eardrums scoured by fifteen minutes of grinding extremity, Hereditas is the solution. DESALMADO puts a clamorous stamp on why Grindcore is a credible and growing, international Metal sub-genre.

The blast beats, riffs and excessively fast and unrestrained sound from Hereditas that penetrates my senses is without question, extremely intoxicating. Vocally monstrous, bordering on maniacal… and that’s exactly how it should sound and feel like. Listening to DESALMADO is accepting willingly, a grinding Metal assailment which decimates the senses and there is no clinical way to explain it any further than that. Forget power or psyche-out vibes, this is bombardment, a voluntary acceptance of an Extreme Metal invasion upon my ears and brain.

Lyrically speaking out against abuse of power and not conforming to idiotic idealism, DESALMADO have something to say. If you’re looking to get obliterated from fifteen minutes of Grindcore and Extreme Metal demolishment, then take my sound Metal advice and pick up Hereditas from DESALMADO… it will kick your ass and serve you right simultaneously.

Hereditas Track Listing:

Condenados Pelo Odio [Condemned By Hatred]

Em Sua Honra [In Your Honor]

Miseria Escravatura [Misery and Slavery]

Chagas Abertas [Open Wounds]

Manto De Sangue [Cloak of Blood]

Adrenaline Mob – Mike Portnoy’s Supergroup To Release Debut EP On August 9th, 2011

ADRENALINE MOB – With Mike Portnoy no longer the drummer for Dream Theater, he is embarking on the next chapters of his stellar music career, one such new chapter is a new Heavy Rock band called: Adrenaline Mob. News of this new “supergroup” broke out in mid June of this year and now the debut EP from Adrenaline Mob will be released on August 9th, 2011.

This Adrenaline Mob, five song EP, includes a cover of the (RJD era) Black Sabbath classic: The Mob Rules. From the samples I’ve listened to on Amazon.com, all five songs undisputedly ROCK and Adrenaline Mob play The Mob Rules with Metal muscle. There will never ever be another Ronnie James Dio, with that said, from the short sample I’ve listened to, Russell Allen sounds damn good singing The Mob Rules. Some may call Adrenaline Mob a Hard Rock band, others will swear they are Metal. I’m going the Metal route here… based on the raw, heavy and edgy moments of these songs I’ve sampled into my ears. Metal be thy name.

* The mp3 album/EP of Adrenaline Mob can be downloaded at Amazon.com for $4.95 (U.S.) on August 9th, 2011. A full-length Adrenaline Mob album is reportedly forthcoming, at the beginning of 2012.

ADRENALINE MOB:

Mike Portnoy – drums (Dream Theater, A7X)

Russell Allen – vocals (Symphony X)

Mike Orlando – guitar (Sonic Stomp)

Paul Di Leo – bass

Rich Ward – guitar (Stuck Mojo, Fozzy)

Adrenaline Mob – Track Listing:

Psychosane

Believe Me

Hit The Wall

Down To The Floor

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on August 6, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Globally celebrated progressive rock / cutting-edge Metal innovators BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME (aka BTBAM) has announced a fall North American headlining tour in support of its new LP The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues. The award winning band will headline the 2011 “Saints & Sinners” Tour and launch the six week trek on 10/27 in Charlotte, NC. Support on the BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME tour will come from Animals as Leaders and TesseracT with tickets available for advance purchase now at this location. The tour’s official admat can be viewed at this location.

“It will be so exciting to get back out on the road and play some tunes for all our wonderful fans,” said BTBAM guitarist Paul Waggoner. “Our anticipation for this tour is massive and I hope that sentiment is shared by all the metal geeks out there. The bill is loaded with some of the most forward-thinking, virtuosic musicians in the genre and the audience can expect to hear all 12 notes in every humanly audible octave many times during the course of the evening!”

Released on April 12 via Metal Blade Records, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues is a three-song strong, 30 minute tour de force of modern heavy music. Produced and engineered by the Grammy award–winning David Bottrill (Tool, Muse, King Crimson, Dream Theater, etc.) with BTBAM, the record soared to #54on the Billboard Top 200 chart in its first week of release while landing the #5 spot on the Hard Music chart, and #8 on the Independent Albums chart in its first week of release. The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues also debuted in Canada charting at #62 on the Top 200 Current chart, #6 on the Hard chart, and #14 on the Independent chart.

“The response to the new album has been absolutely amazing!”, commented BTBAM‘s Tommy Rogers. “It’s always a rewarding experience to hear excitement about the music we create. These days it’s hard to judge what people think of new music, and the feedback on tour and the Internet has really motivated us to create an even more bad ass record for the second part of ‘The Parallax’. See you all on tour!”

HULL – To Release Beyond The Lightless Sky: October 11th: Artwork And Track Listing Revealed

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, sludge metal with tags , , , , , , , on August 6, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

HULL – Hailing from the streets of Brooklyn, New York, HULL has yet again emerged with a creation to outlive the ages. Hard at work since the release of their 2009 debut, Sole Lord, ideas were envisioned and the mighty wind of creativity brought upon this Earth the latest saga, Beyond The Lightless Sky.

Digging further into the past, the Mayan epic takes the listener through a division of two brothers and the struggles that they are faced with. One finds salvation amongst the stars and the wisdom of a stranger, while the other is mesmerized with the bloodthirsty belief of sacrifice and self-mutilation. In silence lies a realm that exists outside the plane of fear.

Taking the new songs on the road, HULL embarked on a successful mission to Austin for the SXSW Festival to then triumphantly return and join forces with longtime friend and talented engineer/percussionist, Brett Romnes (IATA). Within an enormous, darkened club, many nights fell into morning as the immense sound was captured for the album, before putting the recording into the hands of a mixing madman, Billy Anderson. With such experience as The Melvins, Neurosis and Eyehategod, the journey was brutally finished.

Known to behold vast sound expanses, HULL maximizes harmony and tone within one monstrous palate. Upon your brow, focus, as a furious whip of intermingling guitars propel you through the atmosphere as a low pulse resonates through your entire being while the pounding drums blanket all chasms of reality. Find yourself immersed in a musical tide as it is played out before your ears beyond the lightless sky.

Led Zeppelin – Mothership and Remasters: Greatest Hits Albums Of The Day!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

LED ZEPPELIN – I’m recommending Mothership (2007/Atlantic) and Remasters (1992/Atlantic), as the “Greatest Hits Albums Of The Day” from the ultra iconic Led Zeppelin. Honestly, what in the hell could I possibly write about, regarding any Zofo song or album, that has never been written about before? Break down a Led Zep album? C’mon, I’m a realist. Anyhow, I bought Mothership this past Winter due to my “want” behavior that sometimes is difficult to control… especially when it comes to Rock and Roll.

Due to my being a spontaneous album/CD collector geek, I own both these dandy Led Zeppelin “Greatest Hits” I’m recommending. (Remasters is shown below). I picked up Remasters in a “trade” many years ago. Due to my very serious lack of disposable income all those years ago, I traded away the CD’s of Pink Floyd The Wall and threw in Metallica …And Justice For All to get this Remasters.

This trade happened back around 1993 or ’94. I finally picked up The Wall on CD this past year, once again reuniting myself with a Pink Floyd classic of classics. I parted ways with …And Justice For All due to my disliking the song One so badly. I never to this day replaced …And Justice For All either. I most likely will replace it, however. As Lenny Wolf of Kingdom Come would say: “It is what it is”.

Remasters is an odd size, (approximately 5 3/4″ x 12″), while it looks and feels like a long hardcover book that opens up. This Remasters is a 3 disc set, with disc 3 being an interview with Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. This set was released back in 1992 on Atlantic Records. Of course, with the interview CD on Remasters, it does set itself apart from Mothership.

If I was “forced” to choose my favorite Led Zeppelin song of all-time, then that song is: Houses of the Holy. I’ll say this though, Trampled Underfoot comes a very, very close second.

LONG LIVE THE ROCKIN’ LEGACY OF LED ZEPPELIN.

The word “dandy” was once again used, on Metal Odyssey.

HAVOK: Denver Thrashers Announce 2011 North American Tour With Exhumed

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , on August 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Denver Thrash warriors, HAVOK, who recently pummeled the masses on tour with Bay Area legends, Forbidden, will embark on another punishing support trek this Fall alongside headliners Exhumed, Goatwhore and Cephalic Carnage. Set to commence on October 26 in New Mexico, the tour will lay waste to nearly two dozen cities and come to a close in Flagstaff, Arizona on November 20.

Said vocalist/guitarist David Sanchez: “I’m fuckin’ psyched! This lineup is HEAVY! I’m a fan of all of the bands that we’ll be playing with, so this is gonna be really fun. Even better, we finally get to tour with Cephalic Carnage. It will be cool to show people how bands from Denver throw down. If this tour is anything like our last run with Forbidden, there are going to be some gnarly pits and bloody noses. Anyone that’s going to these shows should be prepared to have a sore neck.”

Added drummer Pete Webber: “We are pumped to announce our tour with Exhumed, Goatwhore and Cephalic Carnage this Fall! Our last tour with Forbidden was one of the best yet and we hope to keep the heat going with this one! We will be hitting some cities where HAVOK has not played in a while and you all better show your Metal faces there!”

Cleveland Horrorcore Giant MARGIN OF ERROR Confirmed To Play DIRTFEST!

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock festivals, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on August 3, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Cleveland Horrorcore giant MARGIN OF ERROR has been confirmed to play the annual DIRTFEST on August 13 in Birch Run, MI @ Birch Run Expo Center. Also playing DIRTFEST are All That Remains, Alien Ant Farm, Times Of Grace, Silverstein, Egypt Central, among many others.

MARGIN OF ERROR will be playing on the Party Armour Stage at 2:00 EST.  Make sure you check out the band’s incredibly tight onslaught of extreme Horrorcore. Be there and be square!  The band also recently released quite the controversial music video for their banger “Your Life In Playback”.

You can find more info on DIRTFEST here: http://www.dirtfest.com

In addition, KILLER TOURS will be sponsoring DIRTFEST, and are giving away a pair of DIRTFEST tickets to 1 (one) lucky winner.  You must have aKILLER TOURS account to enter: http://www.killertours.com/contests/

DIRTFEST started in 1997 as an outlet for promoters Matt Dalton and Kurt Gust to showcase their bands at the time. Locals would refer to Birch Run as “Dirt Run” since there was little more to do than play in the dirt of the small town. Each year, Dalton expanded the DIRTFEST and eventually the festival became big enough to host national acts as Four Year Strong, Silverstein, Every Time I Die, Mayday Parade, and The Black Dahlia Murder to play alongside the many local Michigan bands.

This year DIRTFEST expands on that idea by once again including local and national metal acts, and also bringing hard rock bands into the mix as well. DIRTFEST 2011 will return to The Birch Run Expo Center and takes place August 13th.

COME SPEND A DAY IN THE DIRT!

ANTHRAX – “Worship Music”: Releases on September 13th, 2011!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , , , , on August 2, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ANTHRAX – Worship Music, the long-awaited new studio album from Anthrax, one of the four original architects of Speed and Thrash Metal, has been confirmed for a September 13 release date on Megaforce Records. Appropriately,Worship Music will street the day before the band’s triumphant return to their native New York to play at Yankee Stadium as part of The Big Four concert extravaganza.

Not only is Worship Music Anthrax’s first studio release in eight years, but the album marks the return of vocalist Joey Belladonna, whose last studio work with the band was 1990’s Persistence of Time. Joey Belladonna is now firmly back in the Anthrax line up with drummer Charlie Benante, guitarists Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano, and bassist Frank Bello.

The 11-track Worship Music was produced by Anthrax, Rob Caggiano and Jay Ruston and recorded over a four-year period at studios in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Belladonna’s return to the band prompted some of the songs originally recorded to be re-crafted with fresh lyrics or tweaked to better suit his overall vibe and energy. Some of the songs were completely replaced with brand-new songs and, of course, all have Belladonna’s inimitable vocal stamp on them.

When Anthrax first started Worship Music, they had no idea if the music would ever see the light of day, but they carried on because making music is what they do, it’s in their blood. According to Ian, “It took everything in us as people to make this record and it shows. We went back to square one and did it for the same reason we did it back then, because we worshipped music and we still do. Music is something worth worshipping.” Anthrax will support Worship Musicwith a massive world tour. Dates will be announced shortly.

With worldwide sales in excess of 10-million, 2011 sees Anthrax celebrating its 30th year as a band. Over those three decades, Anthrax has received multiple Gold and Platinum albums, multiple Grammy nominations, and a host of other accolades from the media, industry and fans.

GLORIOR BELLI: French Black Metal Collective Premiere New Track From “The Great Southern Darkness”

Posted in Black Metal, black metal music, Extreme Metal, extreme music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on August 2, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

French Black Metal collective, GLORIOR BELLI, are pleased to unveil the first single, “Secret Ride To Rebellion,” off their upcoming new full-length, The Great Southern Darkness. Scheduled for a North America release on September 27, 2011 via Metal Blade Records, the record finds the band at their most ravaging.

Comments vocalist/guitarist Julien of the tune: “‘Secret Ride To Rebellion’ begins furiously with the right mix of blackened tremolos, catchy melodies and wicked words. Then slowly, the track reaches a frenzy point over the last minutes of dark incantations. Sorry pal, you’ve just been exposed to the black light and there’s no return from there!”

Check out “Secret Ride To Rebellion,” at the band’s official landing page, where you will also find pre-order details, HERE.

The Great Southern Darkness features 11 tracks that magnify all the best elements of GLORIOR BELLI in a twisted, gritty, wholly unique way; dangerously violent and fast, yet simultaneously dark and swampy with all the Americana/Stoner/Blues elements the band has come to embrace. Formed in the suburbs of Paris during the close of 2002, what began as a noxious duo soon became an untamable beast, acting as a beacon for everyone looking to free themselves of the influence of the Demiurge.

Lyrics and themes explored throughout the years reveal a sincere inclination for rebel-ism and a developed sense of poetry. Today, GLORIOR BELLI has garnered a stellar reputation in the Extreme Music community for mixing desert rock textures with the brutal, ominous, Doom-laden vibe typical of Black Metal. But don’t bother trying to restrain that which cannot be confined, for this is merely the greatest curse of the cosmic scheme.

SINISTER REALM – “The Crystal Eye”: Defends The Metal Faith Valiantly, In Epic And Prevailing Prominence

Posted in classic metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, traditional metal with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 1, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING ALBUM REVIEW FOR THE CRYSTAL EYE MAY MOTIVATE YOU TO BUY THIS CD… AND MAKE YOU AWARE THAT TRUE AND REAL AMERICAN TRADITIONAL METAL DOES, AFTER ALLTRULY EXIST. YOU’VE BEEN METAL WARNED.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE ALREADY SMIRKING… JUST REMEMBER THIS: STONE DOESN’T BULLSHIT WHEN IT COMES TO METAL.

SINISTER REALM – Okay, so I was minding my own Metal business, when one night last week I checked my email inbox to find a message from Sinister Realm. I’m thinking to myself, what Metal message is Sinister Realm sending me? I was of course curious, for this Traditional Metal band from Allentown, Pennsylvania, has made quite a Metal name for themselves on this part of the East Coast. In the email was an invitation to review their newly released studio album: The Crystal Eye (Shadow Kingdom Records). A no brainer… I was more than Metal willing to give this new Sinister Realm album a listen. Then I listened again… and again. Metal be thy name, I could not believe what I was hearing. God almighty above, The Crystal Eye is an unreal Traditional Metal listening experience.

For all Metal intents and purposes, if you are to buy just one more newly released Metal CD this year, The Crystal Eye is as strong a candidate as any other. Whoa, did someone say “why Stone”? The reasons are easy to explain, therefore here is the Metal breakdown, in no particular Metal order:

Reason One: Let’s skip right to the instrumental that is Battle for the Sinister Realm. My God almighty, is this an intense song that embellishes every nuance that is golden about a Traditional Metal instrumental. Listening to the melodic sound that this song radiates, coupled with its old school Metal vibe and feel, I’m mesmerized that this band can capture such welcomed Traditional Metal magic, in 3:29.

Reason Two: Dual Metal guitars. John Kantner and John Risko. These two Metal axe men summon up all the glorious images of excitement, of days long ago, when my young ears experienced Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing for the first time. Yes, the Metal torch has been handed down… John Kantner and John Risko are two Metal guitarists that are happening NOW in 2011. Hearing is believing…

Reason Three: Alex Kristof on vocals is a convincing and strong presence. Without knowing, I will wager he is a lifetime devotee to the late Ronnie James Dio. Alex is the singer that Traditional Metal bands will search the clubs, internet and world over for… he’s that dynamic with his vocals. On the 8:54 epic, The Tower is Burning, his confidence rains down with each talented syllable he sings. Honestly, there isn’t a moment on The Crystal Eye where I’m not impressed with listening to Alex.

Reason Four: All eight songs embody the essence of how Traditional Metal is supposed to sound like. Powerful, epic and responsible for giving me the damn chills, is how I best describe The Crystal Eye. This album would kick mighty ass in the mid 80’s, only Sinister Realm is kicking mighty ass in the here and now. Metal written and played like this doesn’t grow on some F’n fruit tree, ready to be picked for harvest. The Metal I hear on all of these songs is potent with muscular relevance and cannot be denied by my ears.

Reason Five: Every band needs its rhythmic glue to hold the beats steady and Chris Metzger (drums) and John Shamus Gaffney (bass, background vocals) are titans to hear. With a steel solid production, both Chris and John’s ground quaking effectiveness is substantial and heard with clarity.

Reason Six: The title track: The Crystal Eye. Metal be thy name, this song is the epitome of just how riveting and compelling Traditional Metal can sound and feel like. This song moves me, man. While I’m listening to this song, I feel like I am that “man on the silver mountain” and I can do anything.

Music is subjective and personal to any individual. However, take my Metal advice on Sinister Realm… what you do with it is entirely up to you. The Crystal Eye isn’t a can of Metal whoop ass, instead, it’s a case of Traditional Metal whoop ass. I finish by saying: I listen to my hefty share of Metal and I declare The Crystal Eye as one of the very best Metal albums of 2011. Thanks to Sinister Realm, I’ve been reminded as to why Metal is the law.

The Crystal Eye – Track Listing:

At the Hands of the Tormentor

POWERGLOVE – Premiere Batman Video! Plus The Summer Slaughter 2011 Tour Dates!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on July 30, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

(New York, NY) — International video game Metal act POWERGLOVE have revealed their brand new video for BATMAN, the lead track off their latest release Saturday Morning Apocalypse which came out late last year.

WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.

Guitarist Chris Marchiel offers his own explanation. “David Brodsky and I just finished our music video for Batman. In typical POWERGLOVEfashion we did things a little differently. After shooting our green screen performance footage we captured tons of “sprite” images of ourselves in the style of Mortal Kombat then processed those into full sets of 16 bit action moves. Then, instead of just animating those, I programmed several video game fight scenarios with the band as playable characters and recorded takes of me playing through the mini games. The result is a combination of green screen performance in original 16 bit environments, traditional sprite based animation and recorded gaming sequences and the end result is silly, unique and just plain fun.

The band released Saturday Morning Apocalypse last year to much critical praise, “Saturday Morning Apocalypse proves that fast paced Metal guitar solos and riffs can be injected into cartoon theme songs and be extremely fun to listen to,” says cosmosgaming.com. The record features 11 tracks of mind pounding Metal renditions of popular Saturday morning cartoons we all remember.

Saturday Morning Apocalypse – Track Listing:

X-men
Gotta Catch Em All (Pokémon)
The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest
This Is Halloween (The Nightmare Before Christmas)
Batman
Transformers – (Click on “Transformers” to view video!)
Inspector Gadget
Heffalumps and Woozles (Winnie the Pooh)
The Simpsons (feat. Tony Kakko)
The Flintstones
Gotta Catch Em All (Pokémon; feat. Tony Kakko)
