ATARAXY – To Release “When All Hope Fades” In February, via Dark Descent Records

Spain’s ATARAXY are set to return next year with the release of When All Hope Fades.

The album comes on the heels of the 2016 “The Festival / The Tomb” single and marks the band’s first full-length since Revelations of the Ethereal (2012).

Dark Descent Records premiered album track “Matter Lost in Time” on the label’s most recent digital sampler. The nearly 11-minute exploration of doom-laden death metal immediately caught the attention of the press, including No Clean Singing, who described the song as “…spellbinding, in a chilling and disconcerting way – haunting, bleak and heavy, with tendrils of uneasy but seductive melody that glide like serpents, seeping poison.”

Dark Descent Records will release When All Hope Fades on CD, cassette and digital on February 16. Vinyl treatment coming through Me Saco Un Ojo Records.

With a certain maturity and poise, a sense of deep-set misery almost pushes the record into death-doom territory. Almost…but not quite. The sound remains tensely energetic, albeit with a sense of space, time and songcraft which is more impressive than ever.

Gruesomely textured wraith-like melodies intertwine monstrously hammering double-bass rhythms, the delicate interplay of guitar harmonies threading a perfect line between devious subtlety and straight-ahead bludgeon.

Perhaps above all else, the gasping tortured vocals imbue a horrific terror upon the listener. It is the sum of all parts which so masterfully elevate Ataraxy above their peers. Few others have scaled such heights; in this timeless classic we witness a band enter the pantheon of Death Metal royalty.

HARM’S WAY – Announces North American Headlining Tour With Ringworm, Vein And Queensway

On February 9th, HARM’S WAY will release their fourth full-length, Posthuman, via Metal Blade Records. Having grown with each subsequent release, Posthuman is a devastating addition to HARM’S WAY‘s catalog. “We’ve always stayed true to who we are and allowed the songwriting process to take shape organically from record to record, and as the band has progressed, our sound has become more refined with metal and industrial influences,” states drummer Chris Mills.

Distinctive Chicago-based Doom collective EARTHEN GRAVE have confirmed a plethora of Summer tour dates throughout the country in support of their electrifying self-titled debut album.

Boasting a powerful, dynamic style of plodding Doom Metal surging with classic Heavy Metal vigor, the six members of the band coalesce their Metal aptitude into one entity with EARTHEN GRAVE. Founded in 2008 by guitarist Jason Muxlow (The Living Fields, Wintering) and drummer Scott Davidson (ex-Stonehenge, owner of Rebel Radio), the duo recruited bassist Ron Holzner (formerly of Trouble, Debris Inc., Place of Skulls, etc.), vocalist Mark Weiner (Trifog), guitarist Tony Spillman (Spillage), and renowned classical violinist Rachel Barton Pine on extended range electric flying V violin.

A year after the creation of EARTHEN GRAVE, this union of talented musicians released their first recordings as the five-song Dismal Times demo, receiving immediate praise from underground Metal and Stoner Rock media outlets and fans alike. The next few years saw the band playing intimate club shows as well as providing support for international touring acts on stages around Chicago and regionally throughout the Midwest and East Coast. This has sharpened each member’s skills within the unit and had defined their roles more prominently, fueling the already intoxicating chemistry of the band to dramatic new levels.

In late April of this year, EARTHEN GRAVE entered the studio to create their mammoth first album, simply entitled Earthen Grave. Produced by Ron Holzner, and released on CD and via digital download via his own indie label Claude & Elmo Music, this layered opus showcases even more range and diversity to the band’s commanding material, clocking in with over an hour of epic music!

Metal Odyssey Spotlight On: Marc Broude – Psychological Warfare – 2 Songs of Industrial Metal and Noise!

MARC BROUDE – My never ending Metal quest to find Metal talent that is unsigned, DIY and real has crossed paths with an Industrial Metal and Noise musician known as: Marc Broude. The Metal Odyssey Spotlight is on Marc Broude and his 2 song EP: Psychological Warfare. Marc is the vocalist and plays all instruments on his music.

I liken the sound of Marc Broude’s music to that of Industrial Metal, where Marc is very down with that tag, he also considers his music to be representative of the Noise genre. Marc is from Chicago, Illinois and had started recording while living in a squatter artist collective back in 2005. During 2005, Marc started out in the Chicago based Noise outfit called: Panicsville. A cross-genre composer, Marc has played in various bands which represented genres of: Black Metal, Grindcore, Punk and Noise. If diversity is the key to Metal success, then Marc has associated with some hefty Metal diversity in the course of seven years.

I really appreciate the overwhelming heaviness, experimentalism and mixture of distortion that Marc has implemented into his music’s sound. Marc’s vocals seem to arise from the dark depths of the damned, while his guitar riffs and drumming create a wall of sound that engulfs my surroundings with a nightmarish, bazaar of the living dead mood and atmosphere. Perfect.

I can see a promising Metal future for Marc, his DIY work ethic, multi-tasking, multi-instrument competency and musical inventiveness should eventually draw some credible attention. Marc feels getting his music heard is more important than making money from it… that’s the characteristic of a real musician and an artist who believes in what he’s created.

* Originally released in 2006 as a 50 piece limited edition 7″ which became out of print, Psychological Warfare was digitally remixed for re-release. Distribution is through IODA and Psychological Warfare will be available at all digital music stores, with the CD being available on Amazon and Tower in about a month from now.

* In 2009, Marc released a 72 minute, Dark Ambient dirge titled: Rites of Zen and Medicine. This release displayed a drastic change in Marc’s sound, with a fusion of free improvisation and Avant-Garde Jazz.

THORNAFIRE – To Open For SLAYER In Santiago, June 2nd, 2011

On June 2nd, 2011, Chilean Death Metallers THORNAFIRE have the distinct honor of warming up the stage for the almighty SLAYER when the Thrash titans bring their World Painted Blood Tour to South America. Understandably, the band is marking this occasion as a huge moment in their career as guitarist Victor Mac-Namara reflects in the following statement:

“We are very happy as musicians and fans to be part in the scenario of a Slayer concert, and opening for them in our city.The truth is that I don´t have many words to talk about it, I can only say that we will unleash our fury and vibe on stage with our sharp axes and drums to evoke the somber cry of death. In short, we hope to leave the stage like shit, but leave at least the electrical system working for Slayer to finally crush this masochistic audience with their classic tyranny.”

The announcement of this high-profile gig comes as the band is currently working hard on the anticipated follow up to 2009’s Vorex Deconstrucción. In a previously released statement regarding the forthcoming album, Mac-Namara commented, “Currently we are writing music a little different than what we have done in the past. It’s a variation, but still true to our underground Death Metal underground roots. I’m drawing concepts for the album artwork. We hope to have this released  by 2012.”

THORNAFIRE – Deconstrucción:

Deconstrucción was previously described by THORNAFIRE bassist/vocalist Alexis Munoz as a “futuristic song inspired by the religious and social decline experienced in the current era Eon oh Hourus.”

Deconstruccion comes off THORNAFIRE’s second album, Vorex Deconstrucción, which came out in July 2009 via Ibex Moon Records and is currently available at: Ibex Moon Records and  ABYSS RECORDS.

The band’s previous release, Exacerbated Gnostic Manifestation, is also available through Ibex Moon Records.

The video for Deconstrucción (see & hear below) was filmed, produced and edited by Daniel Duarte (a member of the fellow Chilean Death Metal act EXECRATOR) in a professional TV studio in Santiago.

SKINLESS – To Play Final Show At 2011 Maryland Deathfest

SKINLESS – Following a special, ritualistically brutal, one-off performance last June that brought the classic SKINLESS lineup to the stage once again, the legendary death metal battalion will play their last show at this year’s edition of the Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore. Vocalist Sherwood Webber, drummer Bob Beaulac, guitarist Noah Carpenter and bassist Joe Keyser are prepared to scathe listeners with tunes off Progression Towards Evil and Foreshadowing Our Demise for one last time.

Commented Webber of the final performance: “This is Death Metal, so things can’t live forever, and here… we have an end! I’m stoked the guys at the Deathfest thought of us to do the show. It makes sense and we’re all down to do it. I know Noah announced the band’s demise a couple weeks ago, so it will be like seeing a ghost, then going to see Ghost ha!

“You can expect to see the sickest SKINLESS show ever,” he promises. “Last year’s reunion show was killer. It was everything a SKINLESS show should be about the finality of the MDF performance will definitely make it…….FINAL! THE FINAL NAIL!  Everyone in the band are still great friends. I live in Denver and we all have a lot going on in our lives now. We did way more than I ever expected. It was a lot of drive that made it happen; hard fucking work! MARDUK – IRON DAWN EP: Black Metal Legends Unleash 3 Songs of Hell Summoned, Raging Impact

MARDUK – Releasing on May 31st, 2011, via Regain Records, is a three song EP from Black Metal Legends Marduk titled: Iron Dawn. Black Metal this prolific doesn’t take any prisoners… it simply recruits by example. Not many bands, from any music genre, can release a three song EP and have as strong and convincing of an impact as Marduk has accomplished on Iron Dawn.

The Blackened rage seems to flow almost effortlessly from Marduk, as each song carries it’s sonic fury into the next, like a Hell’s soldier passing a baton onto it’s equally accepted brother from the underworld. With sonic elements that can be construed as progressive, one characteristic remains constant with Marduk, which is their overlay of abrupt explosiveness of Metal that is deeply rooted Black.

The Black Metal battalion needs Marduk at the forefront and Iron Dawn is a master strike reminder that they still command and refuse to follow. Chaos can be captured and revived through song, Marduk can make chaos become a desired theatre of thorns that beckons me to enter and turn my senses on overdrive. Often times the message is sent very clearly, in small packages, that the messenger is never to be underestimated. Marduk has instilled this message very clearly with their three song EP of Iron Dawn.

* I recently corresponded with Necrophagia’s guitarist Boris Randall, in regards to Deathtrip 69. Here is how Boris broke it down, in what to expect from this new Necrophagia album:

“Deathtrip 69 is Necrophagia getting back to it’s roots. Back to what put us on the map for horror and gore mixed with Extreme Metal. At the same time, this album features some new elements that Necrophagia is experimenting with such as more use of acoustic guitars, less synths, different styles of writing, as well as bringing back guitar solos”.

BACKSLIDER / NIMBUS TERRIFIX – Split: An Ultra-Tumultuous Grindcore and Hardcore Collision!

BACKSLIDER / NIMBUS TERRIFIX – Releasing on May 17th, 2011, is Backslider / Nimbus Terrifix (Split) via Give Praise. Backslider is a two-man Grindcore/Hardcore force originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nimbus Terrifix is a Technical Hardcore outfit that calls Scranton, Pennsylvania: home base. In Metal preface, Backslider are representative of the future for Blastcore, while Nimbus Terrifix can set their sights on Hardcore notoriety, just as long as they remain so damn pissed off.

Both of these bands accentuate the raging noize and all things extreme about Metal. Listening to the split album from these two up and coming Hardcore bands is not something you want to do on the way to a “check-up” at the doctor’s office… both your blood pressure and heart rate will be increased while you are trying to feel if the skin has been ripped off your face. (I’m just kidding about the facial skin, then again, you never know).

No epics are in this genre of Metal. Nope. Just quick and obliterating Hardcore uppercuts to the chin that grind out frenzied drums, old school riffs and blunt force jabs of traumatizing vocals. You shall find no sanity in the punishing sounds that Backslider and Nimbus Terrifix dish out. In this world of Extreme Metal, song structures are obliterated into furious spasms of kick-to-the-teeth strikes and counter strikes that carry out one unified message: piss off mainstream.

Give yourself the gift of Hardcore this Spring and try out Backslider and Nimbus Terrifix… you might just find that the extreme punishment these two bands dish will have you asking for more. It’s just like putting your tongue on the terminals of a 9 volt battery, it shocks, it’s unpleasant and you still want more.

While I listen to both bands, I don’t know whether I want to break out or break in. Regardless, I realize that it was my own doing in opening up this can of extreme whoop-ass and I’ll open it again. In under twelve minutes, both bands combined to brutalize my senses and I’m alive to talk about it. It’s the unreal that I hear from both of these bands, that for all intents and purposes, makes it real to me. Metal be thy name.

The album’s eight songs, written exclusively by Sorceron, contain far more urgency then the band’s previous material, cutting down on snyth and keyboards without depleting their crushing atmospheric capabilities, while adding a more brutal, sinister edge to their attack.

GOREAPHOBIA: Legendary Philadelphia Death Metallers To Release New Full-Length!

Legendary Philadelphia death metal squadron GOREAPHOBIA are currently putting the finishing touches on their long-anticipated new full-length fittingly titled: Apocalyptic Necromancy. The follow-up to Mortal Repulsion, released in 2009, the 12-track long player was recorded, mixed and mastered by drummer Jim Roe and features new guitarist VJS (Kult ov Azazel, Crimson Moon, Demoncy, etc.).

Comments guitarist Alex Bouks of the band’s latest output: “All of us in the GOREAPHOBIA camp are real excited about finishing the new record. The new tunes will once again contain 1000% occult Metal nihilism! The only way I can describe our new endeavor is that’s it’s very diverse and takes us back to the band’s roots. Jim has once again recorded and mixed the record at his home studio, Neanderthal. Apocalyptic Necromancy also marks the debut of our new guitar player VJS. There’s a highly positive and magical vibe for the band at the present time. For me, this record is a true progression from the song writing and production on Mortal Repulsion. We hope to have it out soon for all our long time and newer fans.”
