Women of Hard Rock & Metal: Pat Benatar

Posted in concerts, Guitar, Hair Metal, Hard Rock, Music, Rock, Vocals with tags , , , , , , on March 31, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

7717731I have decided to add a special feature to my Metal Odyssey blog, Women of Hard Rock & Metal. As far as I see it, there are many great female vocalists, guitarists and musicians out there in the world of Hard Rock & Metal and I do not overlook them one bit. So, what better platform than right here, to celebrate some of these fabulous female Rockers? The first in this series is none other than – Pat Benatar. Yes, Pat has had her share of ballads and Pop Rock charting singles, yet so has Poison, Warrant, Motley Crue and Van Halen. My point I am trying to make here is, there is Hard Rock aplenty with the catalog of music from Pat Benatar

“All Fired Up”, “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and “Hell Is For Children” solidifies my stating Pat Benatar can deliver the Hard Rock goods. “Promises”, “Treat Me Right” and “Shadows of the Night” are strong contenders of musically being Hard Rock as well. I had the opportunity to see Pat Benatar live last Summer of 2008, wow, what a show. I had a really great time. The exclamation point to the heaviness of Pat Benatar’s music is solidified by her husband and lead guitarist, Neil Giraldo. Let me tell you this, I have seen my share of some great Hard Rock and Metal guitarists play live, Neil Giraldo takes a back seat to very few. This guy can jam it out, play the leads and kick into the solo like the best of them! Needless to say, I left that concert being thoroughly impressed by Pat Benatar’s ageless vocals, Neil Giraldo’s guitar playing and the song list as well. This was one of those concerts where if you sat down for one song, well, you might as well just go home then.

I never put much stock into the Grammy Awards, yet Pat Benatar has won four of them. Now that is some bragging rights for any female Hard Rock vocalist. It is refreshing and inspiring to say the least, when a vocalist like Pat Benatar can exceed your expectations live and sound just as great if not better, than she did in the 1980’s.

412770Well, here I am, continuing my research and very own and personal Metal journey of deciding what the greatest Metal album of all time is. As with the past 3 lists that I have compiled, these lists are nominees only, in no particular order. Plus, a point I need to make is, it would be “fun” and “cool” to add every Metallica, every Led Zeppelin album ever released to these lists, wouldn’t it? I just cannot do that, for I need to keep “some” integrity flowing around here! There will be a few entries from respective Metal bands however, only due to their enormous impact on the evolution and culture of Heavy Metal. I should not be too far away from “finishing” these lists, I cannot wait to see what Metal album I choose as the greatest ever! Once I do make that illustrious and personal Metal decision, I will definitely detail the reasons for why I chose that particular Metal album, you bet. Without further delay, here are another 15 classic Metal albums that I nominate for greatest ever:

1.   Led Zeppelin – “ll”

2.   Led Zeppelin – “lV”

3.   Metallica – “Kill ‘Em All”

4.   Quiet Riot – “Metal Health”

5.   Venom – “Black Metal”

6.   Krokus – “Headhunter”

7.   Kiss – “Love Gun”

8.   Mercyful Fate – “Melissa”

9.   Rush – “Moving Pictures”

10. W.A.S.P. – “The Last Command”

11. Twisted Sister – “Under The Blade”

12. Twisted Sister – “Stay Hungy”

13. Accept – “Restless and Wild”

14. Alice Cooper – “Welcome To My Nightmare”

15. Ted Nugent – “Cat Scratch Fever”

I will continue on with the deliberations, I will keep all of you fellow Metalheads worldwide posted on this ongoing personal Metal journey towards the greatest Metal album of all time!

ICED EARTH – “Tribute to the Gods” is a fine Metal tribute indeed.

Posted in Alice cooper, Century Media, Gene Simmons, Guitar, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal Reviews, Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, Metal, Metal Reviews, Music, Paul Stanley, Rock, Vocals with tags , , , , , , , , , , on March 30, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

Iced Earth released the Metal cover song album – Tribute to the Gods in 2002. This album packs quite the Metal tribute, to some of the most revered bands in the history of Metal. A sampling of some of the songs covered, with their respective legendary Metal band: KissCreatures of the Night & God of Thunder, Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath, Judas Priest – Screaming for Vengeance, AC/DC – Highway To Hell, Iron Maiden – Hallowed Be Thy Name & Number Of The Beast. There are 11 Metal cover songs in all, with Alice Cooper and Blue Oyster Cult rounding out the tribute list of Metal bands.

Jon Schaffer, founding member, plays rhythm, lead and acoustic guitar. Jon Schaffer is someone I hold in extremely high regard as a musician and song writer. Every song is covered with exceptional Metal brilliance on Tribute to the Gods, the musicianship that is heard here takes nothing away from the original songs. To put it plain and simple, this album is as fine a tribute as you will ever hear for these classic Metal tunes, giving nod of appreciation and a thunderous Metal thanks to all the legendary Metal bands listed earlier. Matthew Barlow on lead vocals is tremendous, I always look to him as the lead singer for Iced Earth. Matthew Barlow has his signature vocals that stand out, he never over reaches on any of these vintage Metal tracks. If you are new to Iced Earth, this is a great starting point for catching up on one of the Metal world’s most underrated bands to ever exist.

Some nifty thoughts from a Metal mind.

Posted in Metal with tags , , , , , , on March 29, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

metalodysseyThere are those tidbits of thoughts that I have that just need to be read by the entire world. No, these thoughts are not dirty, so if that is what you are looking for keep searching. Instead, these thoughts are rather more like opinions, than anything else. See if you agree or disagree, either way, these are from a Metal mind.

* Correct me if I am wrong but wasn’t Anderson Cooper alot more cool, at times mysterious and chilled out when he was the host of the reality show “The Mole”? Since CNN has basically declared him the authority of reading a tele-prompter, well, he reminds me of the substitute teacher no fellow teachers even like.

* The Dallas Cowboys of the NFL and the New York Yankees of MLB are both unveiling their multi-hundred million dollar stadiums this year. (yawn). It would be nice if just one, billion dollar sports franchise owner would build a new children’s hospital here in America for our very own sick and needy children.

* Corporations scramble, fall head over heels and spend hundreds of millions of dollars to earn themselves “naming rights” on a sports stadium. (yawn). Why don’t corporations get just as giddy to spend that same amount of money by putting their name on a research hospital or orphanage?

* I see that there has been blizzard conditions in the midwest the past few days, (week of March 22, 2009), with some areas of the midwest reporting upwards of 3 feet of snow. The greenhouse effect is really in full swing now. After living in the North East United States all of my life, maybe, just maybe, I will write a book and call it – “The Ice Box effect”. It will be a glorious day for me, once I see a greenhouse effect on my heating bill. I am still waiting for that day…

* How come, the “Grammy Awards” does not just change their annual show’s name to: “The Anti-Metal Music Grammy Awards”? Just get rid of the “token” “Best Metal Performance” award over there at the Grammy’s, puh-lease!!

Queensryche – where it all began for this superior Metal band.

Posted in Album Review, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Metal, Metal Reviews, Rock, Vocals with tags , , , , , on March 29, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

5513456It was 1983 when I first heard Queensryche on the radio, I heard them on an FM station of course, on a radio show that aired on Saturday nights that was called “Metal Shop.” The very first song I ever heard from Queensryche was “Queen of the Reich,” I was hooked by this band ever since. Geoff Tate, in my opinion, has always had just as powerful and prolific vocals as any other singer in the history of Metal. Queensryche can and has fit right into a few different Metal genres, Heavy Metal, Metal and Progressive Metal. With their debut EP “Queensryche” released in 1983, I easily embraced this great Metal band and remembered telling anyone who would listen that this band was for real. Only 4 songs were on the “original” Queensryche EP, – “Queen of the Reich”, “Nightrider”, “Blinded” and “The Lady Wore Black”. These four songs paved the way of the Metal future for Queensryche, without a doubt, an important and historical Metal EP this is. 27 years of recording and touring, Queensryche proved to the world just how real they are! You can still buy this EP, it has since been re-released, (2003), with the addition of 10 bonus tracks. Now, that is far more tunes than the original 4 song, vinyl record I bought back in 1983!

On March 31, 2009, Queensryche will release their brand new studio album, a concept album, titled – “American Soldier.” I have heard bits and pieces of the songs from around the internet already, tremendous and emotionally moving Metal is what I can honestly say at this point. I simply cannot wait to own this album and listen to it time and again! Once I get my copy on March 31, I will listen with Metal glee, then I guarantee a “must buy” review for “American Soldier” right here, on Metal Odyssey.

Look out! Behind you! There is an “expert” looming!

Posted in Metal, Music with tags , , , , , on March 28, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

You know what? I am fed up with all of the “experts” clogging up all of my favorite cable television networks. From the Food Network to Home and Garden Television, experts abound. What makes an expert, well, an expert anyway? I guess college degrees mean absolutely nothing anymore, throw them away, for an “expert” is better than you! What is the deal? Are people so self entitled now, that their career/job title is not enough? People need to add “expert” at the end of their title, in essence to say to all around them – back off! I am an expert and you are not! Obviously, it is pretty easy to figure out, that the word “expert” attached to anyone’s title is self imposed. If someone disagrees here, please tell me where I can “buy” the word expert or for that matter, “earn” the word expert? Is there a University of Expert anywhere? Nope. How about the College of Expert? Nope again. Is there anywhere on planet Earth, a college, university or any building of higher education that offers a degree in “expert”? Nope, for the third time.

I feel this whole expert fad is very comical. Honestly, I am not kidding around here, I witnessed on the Food Network one evening, it was on the show “Unwrapped”, there he was…. are you ready? A “candy expert”. I have seen it all. What in blazes does someone need to know about candy to become an expert? I have seen and or read about the following experts, get ready for some of these experts are shocking: butter expert, tootsie roll expert, screwdriver expert, tire expert, tissue expert, weather expert (now that is a joke), comic book expert, newspaper expert and highway expert. Highway expert? Man, to think I knew it all about butter. Political experts are the funniest people alive today. Who in their right mind, would want to be called a political expert? They are out there though. Well, just to jump on the expert bandwagon, I have now declared myself, a HEAVY METAL MUSIC EXPERT. So there. From now on, when people ask me what it is that I do, I will reply, with self indulged arrogance like all the other experts I see on television, “I am a Heavy Metal expert.”

It is a social issue to say the least. As a society, people are constantly competing, on every aspect of life. Someone with a rather very high level of competition, decided to say he/she was an expert in his/her field just to “win” the game of competing in life. Guess what? I figured it out all you experts! It is just a seven letter word, yup. So, go ahead, have a blast! Anyone can be an expert! It’s fun! Yipppeeeee!  By the way….. I am also now an expert in properly flushing a toilet in a public restroom. It always appears no one else in the world knows how to do that one correctly.

Fight was one incredible Metal band!!

8613039Rob Halford, the “Metal God” of the Metal music world, formed an incredible band in the Summer of 1992 named Fight. Sure, Rob Halford will forever be known as the super famous and powerful lead vocalist for Judas Priest, yet the Metal music that he created with Fight is superior stuff for me. I so very highly recommend Fight to all Metal fans, especially fans of Judas Priest, Pantera and Thrash Metal. I purchased the Fight CD/DVD – “War of Words – The Film”, (released Summer of 2008), whoa was this one powerhouse band. “Into The Pit” is a straight to your face – all out – Thrash Metal tune that does not let up or give in. “Immortal Sin” is more of a Heavy Metal/Metal track that carries along with dark lyrics and vocals courtesy of Rob Halford. “Kill It” is a very aggressive track, again I am amazed at how ahead of their time Fight really was musically. Overall, the songs on “War of Words” are very relevant to what is being created today by the Thrash Metal and Metal community. Rob Halford was joined with Scott Travis on drums in Fight, (Scott Travis being a long time & current drummer for Judas Priest).

The DVD is super loaded, with a documentary of Fight, plenty of comments and anecdotes to be found. A 13 song live concert comes off with all of the necessary Metal goods, both musically and with quality. There are 3 promotional videos as well, “Nailed To The Gun”, “Little Crazy” and “Immortal Sin” are worth their weight in Metal gold. The copy of “War of Words – The Film” that I purchased was a limited edition, numbered out of 5,000 copies for it included an authentic autographed Fight photo! The autograph is of Rob Halford! Not too shabby to have this bonus autograph included. In all Metal seriousness, this is a band and release that is so Metal worthy of listening to and watching. To me, Fight is one of those rare Metal bands that exhibited enormous excitement, great music and lasted way too short for my liking. Rob Halford to me, definitely succeeded musically while he was away from Judas Priest in the early 90’s.

Fight was: Rob Halford on lead vocals, Scott Travis on drums, Russ Parrish on guitar, Brian Tilse on guitar & keyboards and Jay Jay on bass guitar.

I accepted an 8 track tape of The Doors “Alive She Cried”, now what?

Posted in Hard Rock, Metal, Rock with tags , , , on March 28, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

409613Just over this past Winter, I believe it was sometime in January, I stopped by a “good” neighbors house for a visit. It was early evening, I forget the actual day of the week, however it was arctic cold outside. The visit to see my neighbors went well, good conversation, fine refreshments and an offer I just simply could not refuse. My neighbor friend offered me, a mint in-package, factory sealed, 8-track tape of The Doors “Alive She Cried”. This little gem was also for free too. So, I replied to my neighbor, upon being asked if I wanted this 8-track, “yes, yes, I would like to have it, thank you.” Once it was time to set forth on my journey home, (about a 30 second walk), I tucked this factory sealed 8-track into my leather jacket to protect it from the wind and cold.

Upon my return home, I was a tad bewildered with myself. Why? Why I asked myself. Why did I accept an 8-track tape knowing that there was no way on mother Earth that I could ever possibly play it and enjoy it? Did I accept it for it was free? Did I accept it for it was The Doors? Did I somehow go into some sort of cosmic and chaotic mind loop and think that maybe, just maybe, I was once again in 1981, with the ability to just “plop” the 8-track into my 8-track player waiting for me at home?

I believe the answer is simple. I get so darned crazy for my music I love, that I will jump for joy at the chance to accept any freebie that is Rock & Roll related. Even if the freebie is an item that could never be considered functional or of quality use, heck, if one of my favorite bands is remotely related to the object, I am all over it, thank you very much. Now, is this 8-track of The Doors “Alive She Cried” worth any money? I doubt it is worth much loot at all. My guess would be, say, 2 dollars? Maybe this item is worth, because it is still sealed in it’s original plastic wrapper, 3 dollars? I really do not care about the monetary value of this 8-track at all. It is the novelty of the item, a conversation piece if you will.

I do stare at this 8-track now and again, thinking about how I used to own not one, but two 8-track players when I was in High School. Back then, I was considered the cool “stereo wizard” on my block. Now, this “technology” is considered prehistoric, ancient, dark ages, take your pick. If you were to show an 8-track tape to 100 college seniors today, I bet 100 college seniors would not be able to identify the darn thing. I am satisfied that I did accept this 8-track tape from my neighbor, on that arctic cold night. It is mine now, for me to not be able to play it, only to gaze at it and be reminded of how I really do not miss the “hissing” and “cluncking” sound of the old 8-track players, back in the dark ages.

Jeff Healey was a real guitar hero.

Posted in Music, Rock with tags , , , , , , on March 28, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

381937The late Jeff Healey, now he was a genuine, real guitar hero. I just cannot resist how much of a role model he can still be, for any youngster wanting to take up playing guitar or any musical instrument for that matter. Jeff Healey was Canadian born, (March 25, 1966) and passed away on March 2, 2008. Jeff Healey lost his eye sight at infancy, despite this handicap, he became an accomplished and world renowned Jazz and Blues/Rock guitarist & vocalist. Jeff Healey & The Jeff Healey Band rose to fame with his 1988 album “See The Light”, which includes the hit single “Angel Eyes”. A Grammy nomination was from this same album for the instrumental “Hideaway”.

A unique guitar player Jeff Healey was, playing the guitar flat down on his lap, this is a perfect example that the music being created was far more important than the stereotypical or flamboyant guitar “pose”. As a blind musician, this was how Jeff Healey learned to play the guitar. Jeff Healey appeared on Ian Gillan’s CD/DVD “Gillan’s Inn”, released in 2006. (Ian Gillan is of course, the great lead singer for the legendary Deep Purple).

I can recall a moment in time, when I was at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, a short time after The Jeff Healey Band released “See The Light”. The two friends I was with at the time immediately recognized Jeff Healey sitting down, having lunch with a group of people. My two friends were not bashful, they each politely asked Jeff Healey to sign their Hard Rock Cafe napkins for them, without question or hesitation, Jeff Healey obliged. I was awe struck at how congenial, respectful and happy Jeff Healey was towards my friends at that moment. I never forgot that moment, never forgot how this famous musician took his time away from his own personal friends and lunch to accommodate two autograph requests.

My regret is that I never asked for Jeff Healey to sign a Hard Rock Cafe napkin for myself. Instead, I sat at the bar, staring over at my friends having a shining moment with Jeff Healey. One thing I will never regret though, is the memory of seeing Jeff Healey as a real person, responding to my friends as a true gentleman, as a real guitar hero.

Thin Lizzy “Still Dangerous” reminds me Metal never ages.

Posted in Album Review, concerts, Guitar, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal Reviews, Metal, metal concerts, Music, Rock, Vocals with tags , , , , on March 27, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

9207306The late Phil Lynott, of Thin Lizzy, lives on again with the release of Still Dangerous Live At The Tower Theatre Philadelphia 1977. 32 years later, this concert is still being enjoyed and revered by Metal, Hard Rock and Rock fans and any fan of great Classic Rock. It is obvious to me, that when VH1 Classic Records releases this genre of music now, it tells the world that Heavy Metal never ages. The vocals, song writing and bass playing of the late Phil Lynott will be handed down for generations through CD releases like this. Thin Lizzy, to me, represents the sound of 1970’s Heavy Metal, when this genre was just beginning to evolve and blossom into what it is today. The live music on Still Dangerous is such an essential listen for both young and veteran Metal, Hard Rock and Classic Rock fans around the globe.

Jailbreak, Cowboy Song, Soldier Of Fortune and Boys Are Back In Town never sounded better, plus these songs are captured in all of their heavy, live brilliance from 1977. While I listen to Dancing In The Moonlight, live, it proves to me, that a heavy band can become legendary by not playing heavy constantly. It is a must deserved tribute to a legendary band – Thin Lizzy. To have this live music from Thin Lizzy released in 2009, is an important listening lesson and moment to revisit – in Rock Music history.

Thin Lizzy on “Still Dangerous”: Phil Lynott – lead vocals and bass, Brian Robertson – guitar, Scott Gorham – guitar and Brian Downey on drums.

496190You know, after writing my last article regarding the greatest Metal album ever, I will refuse to ponder! After sleeping on the thoughts of what makes a Metal album the greatest of all time, I realized that I cannot be a jelly head and not step up and announce what I feel is the greatest Metal album ever created. Patience is a virtue however, I need to continue my research, add more lists of great & legendary Metal albums as nominees, follow my Metal heart and then decide. So, in a Metal nutshell, this topic shall be a series of articles leading up to my personal Metal decision on what Metal album is the greatest of greats. I may have a decision within days, it may take a couple of weeks, I am in no rush to make such an important and personal Metal decision! For once the decision is made, I cannot go back on my Metal word and say – “but” or “I changed my mind” – none of that immaturity will I bestow on the world of my fellow Metalheads out there. Now, without further delay, here is a list of 15 more incredible Metal albums that I have personally nominated to might become the greatest of all time. (There is no importance at this time in regards to the order of this list, these again, are nominees):

1.    Guns N’ Roses – “Appetite for Destruction”

2.    Metallica – “Ride the Lightning”

3.    Thin Lizzy – “Jailbreak”

4.    AC/DC – “Back In Black”

5.    AC/DC – “Powerage”

6.    Iron Maiden – “Iron Maiden”

7.    Iron Maiden – “Piece of Mind”

8.    Judas Priest – “Stained Class”

9.    King Diamond – “Abigail”

10.   Exodus – “Bonded By Blood”

11.   Ozzy Osbourne – “Blizzard of Oz”

12.   Black Sabbath – “Heaven and Hell”

13.   Deep Purple – “Machine Head”

14.   Anthrax – “Among the Living”

15.   Pantera – “Cowboys From Hell”

I definitely will have to continue on with some more nominations here, I am not going to just rattle them off the top of my Metal head, I need to clearly think about the albums and then justify to myself their significance to the world of Metal. I find this truly fun, it really beats watching the 24 hour news networks and listening to their robotic talking heads reading from tele-prompters! There will be more nominees to come, stay tuned, be patient, I will make an informed Metal decision on choosing the greatest Metal album ever.

What is the greatest Metal album ever? Something to ponder…

Posted in Album Review, Death Metal, Drums, Extreme Metal, Guitar, Hair Metal, Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal Reviews, james hetfield, Metal, Metal Reviews, Metallica, Music, ozzy, Power Metal, Slayer, Slipknot, Thrash Metal, Vocals with tags , , , , , , , , , on March 27, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

3117816Here we go, a “fun” exercise in Heavy Metal debate, one of the more controversial question’s in Metal music history. What Metal band made the greatest Metal album ever? I like to cut to the chase by having this debate as “all inclusive,” meaning every Metal genre get’s involved here. This without doubt, becomes a personal issue for most Metal fans, I can accept that for I take this topic very personal as well. I never like to get caught up with which genre of Metal is better, nor do I like to get childish and say Slipknot is better than…

The age old question of what is the greatest Metal album ever has more of a historical importance to it. This is really an open ended question, for what merits the album to be the greatest anyway? Does the greatest Metal album have to be from the onset of Heavy Metal, say the late 1960’s – early 1970’s? Would this be due in part for the greatest Metal album would be the cornerstone and/or building block of the future of all Metal music? It is an obvious acceptance in the world of Metal music, that “hit” singles do not constitute any appreciation, applause or adulation amongst real Metal fans. Metal music, as a rule, is underground, dark, no hits needed please. The Heavy Metal and Hair Metal genres have garnered most of the “hit” singles for us, that is fine with me. My main point I am conveying here is it should not be necessary for the greatest Metal album ever to be loaded with radio friendly hit songs.

There are many ideas to consider when choosing the greatest Metal album ever, the list could actually be endless with criteria! Here are some questions that could be posed to this debate:

1. Is the album groundbreaking for it’s Metal genre?

2. Is the album representative of a sound that is fresh & new while still staying true to Metal?

3. Musically, is the album cutting edge? Is the album musically basic?

4. Does the greatest Metal album incorporate several Metal genres? Does it bestow influences of past Metal?

5. How memorable should this Metal album be? Quite memorable for me I am sure.

6. Is the greatest Metal album ever – created by a powerhouse/well known Metal band, or a more “fan favorite” underground Metal band?

7. Just as I feel about the hit singles approach, I do not/never have given any credence to the sales figures or chart position of any of my favorite Metal albums, I leave that to the “Pop” & “bubble gum” music world thank you.

8. Is this greatest Metal album ever a concept album? Could it possibly be an EP?

9. Could the greatest Metal album ever be just instrumental? Partial vocals?

10. Could the album cover have any influence on how a person feels about the music? I could not be swayed by the album art when making a decision on the greatest Metal album ever.

Well, it is all about preference when it really counts. Many Metal fans want their greatest Metal album to be the heaviest music there is out there, while other Metal fans may opt for history being made in the music, on this album. I really do not see any wrong or right way to judge, I feel it becomes far too personal a choice for me to truly make. This is why I have to chuckle when some music critic in the mainstream media comes up with a personal choice of the greatest Metal album of all time. A bigger chuckle for me is when a readers choice poll gets printed in a mainstream music magazine and it is the classic, cliche’ unveiling of a Metal album that is thrown down your throat – that this is the Metal album of the ages.

For those who feel I should be more adventurous and just say which Metal album is what I consider to be the greatest of all time, well, here are a few candidates I feel are worthy. Forgive me for not being able to say which album I deem as the all time greatest Metal masterpiece. I am guilty of loving all Metal and I am infatuated with too many Metal albums to nail it down to just one greatest. Here is my top ten list, not in any particular order, for nominees of the greatest Metal album of all time.

1. Metallica – “Master of Puppets”

2. Queensryche – “Operation Mindcrime”

3. Black Sabbath – “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”

4. Slipknot – “All Hope Is Gone”

5. Jimi Hendrix Experience – “Are You Experienced”

6. Led Zeppelin – “Physical Graffiti”

7. Slayer – “Reign In Blood”

8. Rush – “2112”

9. Black Sabbath – “Black Sabbath”

10. Motorhead – “Ace of Spades”

In a perfect world, sure, I would pick one of these fine Metal albums above and bestow it as the greatest ever. I am certain my list of nominees are quite different than my fellow Metalhead fans out there, some may agree partially to my list. Tomorrow, for heaven sake, this list of mine could change in a heartbeat! That is how amazing Metal music is for me, I could honestly come up with another list of 10 nominees for greatest Metal album ever! Somewhere out in the world of Metal music, is the greatest Metal album ever recorded. It is definitely being listened to and enjoyed by an unknown number of Metalheads, at this moment you are reading this article. Rest assured, this list is not set in Metal stone for me, yet I do reflect back to these Metal releases each and every time that I ponder the greatest Metal album ever…

“Stay at home dad” title has lost it’s flavor.

Posted in Metal with tags , on March 26, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

metalodyssey1I am and have grown extremely tired of the title – “stay at home dad”. What is a stay at home dad anyway? A dad who just decides to stay at home for no reason? A dad who wants to sit around all day and… stay at home? Too many times, people I meet for the first time give me a peculiar look upon knowing my “official” title. I guess the stay at home dad thing came about because, well, a guy cannot be called a housewife. There does not seem to exist, the title – house husband. Upon moving to a new state, 4 years later, the neighbors surrounding our home still look at me peculiarly, wondering what is it that I exactly do. My neighbors know I take care of the yard, heck, they see that for themselves. I am a man in action around the yard, no one who observes me doing yard work can dispute that claim. However, hordes of neighbors wonder….. what does this guy do when he is not in the yard? What about Winter months? Why is he home? What is this guy doing inside of his house? Where is he going now? What are in the bags he is carrying?

I do not suffer from any phobia, I am only responding to the dumbfounded looks of dismay and bizarre comments I consistently get from my neighbors for 4 years running. One neighbor, well, he actually accused me of actually doing nothing at all. You read that correctly, here is how this elderly genius of a man put it to me: “Awe, y-y-you, why, you have time to fix that stone wall of yours, wh-wh-why you don’t do ‘nuthin all day long.” Yup, straight to my face this was said. I even had the same elderly man say to my face last Spring: “yeah, now your outside in the yard again, you stay in the house all Winter and do ‘nuthin, now you got sumthin’ to do.”

I also have another neighbor, an elderly woman, she is a living nightmare gone amuck. She took it upon herself to tell other neighbors that I was “hitting on” another mother at the bus stop, that something was going on between me and this other mom. Apparently, this elderly lady has the evil gift of making up whatever she wants, about whoever she wants, whenever she wants. Gee, thanks a ton neighbors! Another middle aged female neighbor, why, she finds it necessary to ask me: “did you find a job yet”? This woman asks me this same question each and every time she sees me. It is compelling, yet very disturbing, that people are out there ready to spread vicious rumors about someone else they do not even know. It is equally disturbing that there are people out there that will say straight to your face, that you do absolutely nothing with your life. These are the same people who have not a clue as to what my schedule, routine and duties entail. I am not about to hand out a written report to total strangers in regards to my daily life. Truth be told, I am not angry at these neighbors, I pity them.

Well, the people who actually know me, my incredible and beautiful wife and my gorgeous children know what I do every day. These are the people that are immediately affected by my duties, these are the people that cherish and respect what a stay at home dad really does. Maybe, just to pacify the lame minded who are out there who have disdain for the stay at home dad, maybe the title of stay at home dad should be changed to “stay at home and do ‘nuthin guy.” You know what, I could care in the least. I write this to get it out in the open, that there are nosey, mean spirited people out there that should mind their own business.

Why did my guinea pig live for seven great years?

Posted in Heavy Metal, Metal with tags , on March 26, 2009 by Metal Odyssey

I had a wonderful pet guinea pig that just recently passed away. This little guinea pig was named Tigger and lived for 7 lively, great years. Recently, people that I have spoken to in regards to my guinea pig keep asking me, “Is it normal for a guinea pig to live that long”? Or, “What is the normal life expectancy of a guinea pig”? Well, without consulting a PHD in guinea pig science, I answer quite unscientifically on my very own with “The normal life expectancy of a guinea pig is 3 to 7 years.” I am now convinced that my guinea pig, Tigger, lived to the fullest on the life expectancy scale for this particular species. God bless any guinea pig that has lived longer than Tigger. Now, without further non-essential blabber, here is another very unscientific reason for why I BELIEVE my little guinea pig, Tigger, lived for 7 happy years: METAL MUSIC – and plenty of it.

Tigger lived in a very spacious, very expansive cage, fully equipped with an oversized water bottle and plenty of guinea pig food, with alfalfa and timothy hay – 24/7. Not a bad gig for any little rodent. Tigger was situated in the area of my home which has the stereo system, therefore, Tigger was able to enjoy the Metal music each and every time I enjoyed it. Skeptics may ask, “How do you know a guinea pig actually enjoyed Metal music”? My answer is simply, (and this time it is scientific) from observation. I do not care what it is in life you observe, if you are observing something that is living, everyday, for 7 years, I would hope you could scientifically make a judgement call as to the overall behavior and changes in behavior due to it’s surroundings and external stimulus.

Each time Metal tunes were played, from my observations, Tigger would become more active than normal, he would do “mad runs” around his cage, he would skip about in a happy manner, he would even do the famous guinea pig chirping and tweeting sounds vocally. When there were no Metal tunes being played, when all was quiet in Tigger’s surroundings, well, from what I observed, Tigger would be complacent, quiet and really not too active at all. This concludes my reason for why Metal music played an enormous and important role in having Tigger live for 7 years. Skeptics abound, they may question: “Are you a trained observer”? My answer is no, I never received a college degree in observation. I never received a college degree in breathing, eating or drinking a glass of water either. To really nit pick, I never received proper training in guinea pig observation at all, nor did I ever attend a guinea pig observation seminar or listen to any guinea pig observation CD’s.

This may sound absurd to some, yet Metal music had a prolific and positive affect on my little guinea pig’s life. In scientific terminology, a positive stimulus. Am I a guinea pig scientist? No, I never studied the biology or psychology of guinea pigs. This is again, my own observation from looking at this living creature every day for 7 years, especially when Metal music was being played. It is only right for me to say I will miss you Tigger, you little Heavy Metal guinea pig.

Heavy Metal in Heaven? I certainly hope so.

4276768I like to think of Heaven as my destination goal, once I leave this world of course. Yeah, it is cool for the Metal genres to write and sing about hell, hell’s kitchen, fires of hell, “Highway To Hell”, etc., etc., yet that is not where I want to be going. I often hope and wonder, will Heaven have everything that is “good” about our lives? Will heaven allow Heavy Metal? I would hope and pray that the late Jimi Hendrix is allowed to have his guitar and play up there in the clouds. I would not doubt for a second, that the angels and saints could not enjoy the late Joey Ramone’s singing. Music as a whole, has made planet Earth more enjoyable, music has definitely made my life more fun and inspiring, I am comfortable thinking I speak for millions of people.

Essentially, I believe in Heaven, therefore I believe there is all music represented up there since the beginning of time itself. From primitive to modern day, I have to believe the history of music is heard in Heaven. Well, it is always a hoot to imagine what kind of Metal bands have formed up in Heaven, with so many Rock legends hopefully being up there. I wonder if the late Buddy Holly is jamming out with the late Stevie Ray Vaughn? Is the late Jim Morrison leading a band or embarking on a career in poetry amongst the clouds and rainbows?

Here is a Heavy Metal band that could have possibly formed up in Rock & Roll Heaven. (I am sure there can be hundreds of different bands put together with this topic, this is just one band lineup that looks really cool).

Kevin DuBrow – lead vocals – (Quiet Riot)

Randy Rhoads – lead guitar – (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne)

Steve Clark – lead guitar too! – (Def Leppard)

Eric Carr – drums & percussion – (Kiss)

Cliff Burton – bass guitar – (Metallica)

Now, would this be a great band to see or what? I certainly think this band would be a kick! I also hope, that up there in Heaven, the battle of the Metal genres comes to a screeching halt. That is why I have the late Cliff Burton playing bass guitar with a bunch of Hair Metal legends. Wait a second, the late Randy Rhoads was not a Hair Metal guy, he was just plain amazing. The late Kevin DuBrow with Quiet Riot hold the honor and distinction of being the very first Heavy Metal album to hit #1 on the album charts. This achievement surely paved the way for Heavy Metal storming into the mainstream. I sure miss each and every one of these guys, the music they created will last here on Earth forever – or until that big unknown space rock collides with Earth and we are all evaporated within a zillionth of a micro second. That is why it is so essential to believe that all music, especially all the Metal genres are up there in Heaven waiting for all of us Metalheads – who believe.

Metal Edge magazine.com exhibits poor taste.

It appears that Metal Edge magazine.com has an obvious immature sense of humor. Just to say up front, the legendary Ozzy Osbourne is alive today. However, Metal Edge magazine.com wants us fellow metalheads to be jolted, scared straight and then humiliated. Here is how the story goes: on Monday, March 23, 2009, I gave Metal Edge magazine.com my usual “browse through”. Upon looking at the home page, under “Metal News”, is the headline: “Ozzie Osborne Dies”. Now, upon looking at that headline, I was shocked to say the least, not noticing the incorrect spelling of the Metal Legend we all love, I instantly clicked for the “news” article and found that this is an entirely different “Ozzie Osbourne” altogether. Of course, when the word “dies” is connected to a world known Heavy Metal legend, the average reader is not going to notice that it is an entirely different person based on the spelling, the shock of the immediate message takes away from noticing the name being spelled differently.

This “Metal news article” goes on to say that this “Charles Ozzie Osborne” is 89 years old, lives in California and has indeed passed away. Wow. Real “Metal news” here. The humiliating part, which is rather insulting to all Metal fans, is that the headline above this article states: “Made You Look”. Wow. Real mature Metal Edge magazine.com, that is just how you want to treat loyal Metal Edge subscribers of your magazine and Metal fans of your website. NOT TO MENTION YOU INSULTED AND HUMILIATED EVERY HEAVY METAL FAN OF THE VERY MUCH ALIVE, METAL LEGEND, OZZY OSBOURNE.

Obviously, the staff at Metal Edge are too young to remember the real horror of Heavy Metal fans hearing the “real” news of Randy Rhoads passing away on March 19, 1982. CONGRATULATIONS, METAL EDGE. YOU BASICALLY GAVE ABSOLUTELY ZERO RESPECT TO THE WORLD OF HEAVY METAL AND TO OZZY OSBOURNE AND THE RANDY RHOADS FAMILY. BY HAVING THIS INDECENT AND CHILDISH HOAX ON NEARLY THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRAGIC DEATH OF THE GREAT RANDY RHOADS. Just so the pre-school minded staff at Metal Edge knows, Randy Rhoads was the lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, from 1979 to 1982.

THERE ARE MILLIONS OF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE IN AMERICA TODAY, YET METAL EDGE IS ACTUALLY PAYING PEOPLE TO WRITE PHONY AND MISGUIDED “NEWS” GARBAGE, TOPPING IT OFF WITH CONDESCENDING AND HUMILIATING “GOTCHA” LINES LIKE “MADE YOU LOOK” – I AM SO  NOT IMPRESSED.

I am certain, the babies at Metal Edge will cry out: “you should have noticed the incorrect spelling of the name before you got startled”. Well, Metal Edge magazine.com, you should be embarrassed, ashamed and make a public apology to Ozzy Osbourne, the family of Randy Rhoads and admit you have a ton of “REAL” Metal history and news to catch up on before you pen another illegitimate, false and humiliating headline like that again. TO THE STAFF AT METAL EDGE MAGAZINE AND YOUR .COM – GROW UP AND LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY OF METAL. WE ALL LIVE IN DIFFICULT ENOUGH TIMES RIGHT NOW, THERE IS ENOUGH BAD NEWS TO GO AROUND, NOBODY NEEDS ANY EXTRA BAD NEWS THAT IS “MADE UP”, OBVIOUSLY THE STAFF/PRE-SCHOOLERS AT METAL EDGE ARE THE ONLY ONES LAUGHING.

To sum it up my fellow Metalheads and fans of all things Metal music, please know OZZY OSBOURNE IS ALIVE TODAY, play his music loud and proud and remember and listen with awe, the guitar brilliance of the late & legendary RANDY RHOADS. Above all, ignore the simple minded in life like the staff at Metal Edge magazine and their .com, for to follow them is to follow a path straight to ignorance.

KREATOR has created incredible Thrash Metal!

91556921Hey, I hold one heck of a strong allegiance to Thrash Metal. Veteran Thrash originators like Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Anthrax, Megadeth, Destruction, Over Kill, Testament and even young newcomers like Black Tide and Warbringer set me straight on the road to Thrash Metal glee. My main point of this article is to shout out loudly and proudly to the entire world that – Kreator is one unbelievable Thrash Metal band, wow. What has me so impressed by Kreator, is that they have released 2 amazing Thrash albums in a row! Starting with “Enemy of God”, (released in January of 2005), then this January of 2009 brought us the incredible “Hordes of Chaos”. I am not, in any way, taking away the Thrash Metal greatness of their achievements from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Kreator has, experimented musically in the past, yet this has never been an abomination to me by any means.

If you are a fan of Heavy Metal, Metal or  Thrash Metal, you simply have to give Kreator a listen if you have not already. There are mainstream “music critics” out there who do not have a clue, they do not even know that Kreator is generating throngs of fans worldwide with their tours and quality albums. Furthermore, these so called professional “music critics” are always the first to cry out that melody and Thrash/Death Metal do not exist together. Well, Kreator pretty much adds melody to their Thrash, you are not getting just a flurry of riffs and chords that go nowhere with pummeling blast beats.

The essential and basic ingredients to achieving top tier Thrash Metal is accomplished here with Kreator. On “Enemy of God” and “Hordes of Chaos”, you will hear lyrics on violence, anarchy and just about every dark image you can imagine. The guitar riffs, leads and solos are second to none in the genre. The lead vocals are powerful, distinct and never take center stage over the music itself. The rhythm section is a lesson in Thrash Metal 101, beating you down into a Thrash submission that elevates you at the same time. Kreator hails from the fine country of Germany. Over the last couple of decades or more, Germany has been infamous for the Power Metal greatness that it exports, (Scorpions, AcceptEdguy, GammaRay, etc). Well, Germany has in my opinion, delivered to the Metal world, what I regard as one of the greatest and most underrated Thrash Metal bands that has ever existed – Kreator.

Kreator initially bestowed their greatness to the Thrash Metal genre in 1986, with “Flag of Hate”. Obviously, Kreator is a veteran Thrash Metal band, they have sustained and persevered like so many others in Metal. Since then, there have been lineup changes with the band, which to me, is a natural occurrence within any Rock music genre. The current Kreator lineup is as follows: Miland ‘Mille’ Petrozza on vocals and guitar, Jurgen ‘Ventor’ Reil on drums, Christian ‘Speesy’ Giesler on bass and Sami Yli-Sirnio on guitar. I highly, without hesitation, recommend the entire Kreator catalog of music to savvy Thrash Metal fans worldwide – especially “Enemy of God” and “Hordes of Chaos”, these two albums alone are Thrash Metal gold for me.

Why Anthony Bourdain is a cool dude

4189906Yes, I am an avid watcher of the Travel Channel’s: Anthony Bourdain “No Reservations”. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this show, Anthony Bourdain is a writer, chef and likes to travel. As Anthony Bourdain travels the globe, he encounters every culture and diverse eatery you could imagine, therefore, Anthony Bourdain eats well on every episode. There are several reasons why I enjoy watching Anthony Bourdain, for starters he has a laid back, chilled out demeanor about him, he always treats different cultures and people with respect, he likes all types of food and drink and narrates each episode with a tasteful and humorous dialogue. Honestly, this show is light years better than any scripted, shallow junk you may find on network television. After being a loyal viewer of Anthony Bourdain “No Reservations” for a few years, I was enlightened and thrilled by two episodes that were aired this past year. Here is the skinny on these two COOL episodes:

The first COOL episode had Anthony Bourdain meeting up with none other than – MARKY RAMONE! Anthony and Marky took a tour of the great city of Cleveland, Ohio together. Marky Ramone took Anthony to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where Marky pointed out the RAMONES shrine, seeing the sincere look of pride on Marky’s face during this scene was for me, memorable. Marky pointed out actual concert relics of his own, that are on display. Anthony and Marky Ramone also were filmed dining out at an eatery/restaurant, listening to their conversation gave me the impression they were long lost buddies.

The second COOL episode had Anthony Bourdain meeting up with……ALICE COOPER! On this episode, Anthony’s travels had him trek through the fabulous state of Arizona. Anthony Bourdain stopped by the eatery owned by Alice Cooper, know as “Alice Coopers’town”. What a neat Heavy Metal surprise, to see a different angle of Alice Cooper, cordially welcoming Anthony to his own establishment. The conversation between these two gentlemen was very engaging, man, I wish I was the third wheel at that restaurant table! The camera spanned the interior of “Coopers’town” rather quickly, yet from what was shown, this is a Metalhead’s dream eatery to visit someday.

Now, it goes to show you, that you just never know when one of your favorite Heavy Metal or Punk Rock legends will surface on the tube! Getting to see these two music legends away from the usual concert and music video footage is so interesting. You realize that the legends of METAL and Punk Rock do live normal lives after all! Suffice to say, I hope I proved my opinion to some, if not all, that Anthony Bourdain is a cool dude.
