MURDERDOLLS “WOMEN AND CHILDREN LAST” – MY FIRST METAL IMPRESSION

MURDERDOLLS – Yes, I made my Murderdolls CD purchase today, on it’s release date. The deluxe edition looked too fantastic to pass up, therefore I snagged this version of Women And Children Last and so far… it has served me right. The three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition are: Mother F**ker See, Mother F**ker Do, The Funeral Ball and A Moment Of Violence. The bonus DVD includes live songs recorded at The Key Club in W. Hollywood, CA on June 17, 2010.

So, what would my favorite track be thus far? Well, I have listened to Women And Children Last about five times today… and I am not remotely close to growing tired of one song yet. Actually, this new Murderdolls has been quite the escapism for me. The raucous, pissed off and nightmarish lyrics are a sheer delight to listen to… especially after I watched the news at noon today.

The lead single from Women And Children Last, My Dark Place Alone, still blasts out at me like a stick of Metal dynamite, leaving me thinking… this crazy shit is F’n fun! Blood Stained Valentine is one hell of groove infested number… it Rocks so hellishly fine this… Blood Stained Valentine! Summertime Suicide has some deep and depressing lyrics… only the melodic hardness of this song has taken me by surprise and makes it a damn cool song, worthy of hitting the repeat play button multiple times. Pieces Of You is another infectiously heavy and vibe ridden song that has me in Metal stitches.

Wednesday 13 has the vocals of a modern day Horror Punk meets Horror Metal superstar. Joey Jordison is Metal sound and Metal solid on guitar. If there is any question about Joey delivering the licks with a six string, then just one listen to Rock N Roll Is All I Got is the sure fire-slap to the forehead reminder that he is the real deal. Whoa… Rock ‘N’ Roll is (gasp) fun sometimes! Whatever You Got, I’m Against It electrifies with fun vibes throughout, with strong hints and deep shades of Punk Rock flavor… Old School style too.

Well, my first Metal impression of Women And Children Last, after nearly six thorough listens, is that this Murderdolls album is spontaneously contagious! I don’t predict that my Metal impression shall change anytime soon, unless… maybe I’ll like this new Murderdolls album even more with each listen. Murderdolls don’t disappoint on delivering the Heavy, nor do they disappoint on bringing some Horrific Fun back into the world of Rock ‘N’ Roll either. That’s my first Metal impression of Women And Children Last, so let it be Metal written, so let it be Metal done.

MURDERDOLLS – It’s Tuesday, August 24th, 2010. Next Tuesday, August 31st, the second studio album from MURDERDOLLS is released upon the world via RoadRunner Records. The buzz and excitement is building like an F’n tsunami with Women And Children Last due out one week from today. As I have been chatting with fans and several Metal buddies the past two weeks, the new MURDERDOLLS album seems to get brought up as if it was the beginning of a new chapter in Rock ‘N’ Roll history. Maybe this album will be just that, who knows?

So, what could all the excitement be about, when it comes to the new MURDERDOLLS album? For one, we are living in crappy economic times right now in America, so anything that can put our minds at ease about paying bills and making next month’s rent or mortgage payment is embraced by our sub-conscious and devoured like marble cake soaked in beer. I know for fact, that music is a driving force that steers my emotions and empowers me to live and love my life, regardless of how messed up the world news may be. (Yes, for the record, my wife and daughters are the #1 driving force that motivates me, only music helps to turn up my psyche-out dial until it smokes).

Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison are no strangers to the Metal and Extreme world of music. Hell, neither one of them are strangers to the Rock world period. Their talent as songwriters and musicians has been laid out before us fans and spread across albums that most of us consider damn right sacred. Slipknot is a band, whose lyrics and Metal reaches out and beats the piss out of my privately held emotions. Joey Jordison and Slipknot gave new meaning to captured aggressiveness through song. Wednesday 13 is a vocalist and musician who dared to be different a long time ago, hell, he obliterated the status quo while making stagnant Rock Music run for cover.

Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison are not your grab the money supergroup. They are the Saturday matinee, nightmare-double-feature that I crave to see and listen to. MURDERDOLLS are not a softened up act from the late ’70’s or ’80’s that is now preaching that their Metal has matured or progressed. No F’n way. These are two musicians that are NOT telling fans through interviews, that they should not be telling MURDERDOLLS what songs to play live. (Not from anything I’ve read or heard anyways).

The persona and image that MURDERDOLLS glistens with may not be brand new to Rock ‘N’ Roll, still it’s the uniqueness of these musicians themselves that adds to their overall mystique. Image aside, it’s the music of MURDERDOLLS that matters. I don’t envision anytime soon, MURDERDOLLS appearing onstage at the CMT Awards doing a country version of Dead In Hollywood. Sincerity and credibility sure does go a very long way with me… especially when it comes to music that’s fortified with 100% bad ass. The album title – Women And Children Last, advertises the sense of humor that MURDERDOLLS has, while sticking up a middle finger to the uptight world of political correctness. (Phew)… bad ass Rock ‘N’ Roll isn’t dead and buried after all!

After listening to My Dark Place Alone from the forthcoming Women And Children Last album for over a month now, I certainly hope that the entire album will be just as scorchingly powerful. The Punk subtleties that are aggressively fused with Metal, explode from My Dark Place Alone. Speed, Thrash and a sprinkle of Rob Zombie-ism in the vocals of Wednesday 13 seems to escalate with each passing second, as I listen to My Dark Place Alone. In the end, it’s the originality that means the most to my Metal ears. MURDERDOLLS do not have to make excuses to me if I hear any semblance of past Metal, Punk or Rock influences in their music.

Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison are going to throw hints around, through their songs, of their past musical background… it’s inevitable. The overall aggressive and horror based embellishment of their sound is what lures me the most, all the while knowing these two musicians are not just throwing a record together just because they can. I’m not expecting a carbon copy of their first album – Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls, the single My Dark Place Alone has changed all that thinking.

Horror Punk has always been the “evil kid on the block” within the Rock Music world that factually gets ignored by the mainstream, maybe that is why I fell head over Metal heels for Horror Punk so many full moons ago. Music evolves, so therefore bands evolve too. MURDERDOLLS are taking their music to the next level of Hard & Heavy and I am one fan who cannot wait to get my ears pummeled by Women And Children Last.

I can understand the excitement and the anticipation of this new MURDERDOLLS album, it’s an excitement that is flowing around my Rock ‘N’ Roll arteries and Metal veins as I am drafting this actual post. Bring it on MURDERDOLLS and stomp down upon the generic music vacuum!

ALICE COOPER “CONSTRICTOR” – 1986 ALBUM REVISITED!

ALICE COOPERConstrictor was released on September 22, 1986, on MCA Records. Constrictor was the ninth studio album representing the “solo” career of Alice Cooper. This was the album that marked the return of Alice Cooper, (The Nightmare Returns Tour soon began). A three year “retirement” of sorts had begun since Alice Cooper’s 1983 studio album – DaDa. This Constrictor album changed all of that “retirement” thinking… Alice Cooper was really back, on MTV and even at WrestleMania III on March 29, 1987.

Alice Cooper was in the corner of Jake “The Snake” Roberts as he squared against The Honky Tonk Man during WrestleMania III. I can remember watching this all unfold, seeing Alice Cooper in the ring, thinking to myself… man, Alice Cooper could kick some ass right now! (Honestly, I used to think Pro Wrestling was real… the WWF kind that is). I had bought tickets to WrestleMania III with my cousins, only it was tickets for the then extremely popular – closed circuit television at a large theatre.

Ah, Metal… I mean, WrestleMania memories. Now, back to this Constrictor album:

The Constrictor album cover itself is vintage Alice Cooper, shock and horror imagery really goes hand in hand with this Rock ‘N’ Roll icon. Aw, heck, compare this album cover to most Grindcore, Death and Black Metal album covers and you are looking at the age of innocence, with Alice Cooper’s neck and face being the fixture for this boa constrictor. I do love this album cover… it’s the persona and image of what Alice Cooper conveys as a performer.

The most commercial and late 80’s accessible Hard Rock song on this album is without a doubt – He’s Back (The Man Behind The Mask). This keyboard dominated song was also a major song for the movie soundtrack – Friday The 13th Part Vl: Jason Lives. With all of it’s open air silliness, I still like this song. It’s different. Very different. Let’s face it, this song was written and recorded for a purpose, to promote both a major slasher film franchise and Alice Cooper as well. When the Metal goal is to intentionally make a commercial song such as this, (which is obvious), then I’m agreeable.

The Great American Success Story is another mainstream blast of Hard Rock, which teeters on Pop Metal by way of 1986. The Arena style guitar takes the upper hand in making this song navigate through it’s friendly swirl of lyrics and melodic undertaking. Even Alice Cooper himself sounds more amicable than formidable on The Great American Success Story.

Life And Death Of The Party takes a more harder and heavier turn for the Metal better. Alice Cooper even has a semi-sinister delivery with his vocals, a characteristic that is essential to his voice and persona. The more sinister Alice Cooper gets… the better. Thrill My Gorilla can either be construed as tongue-in-cheek or just plain Hard Rockin’ fun, take your Metal pick. This song can only work for Alice Cooper back in 1986… this song in 2010 would go down as ? and in 1978 this song would have been ? as well. Really, c’mon, it’s the Metal truth.

Give It Up, with it’s “Give It Up” chorus and open door friendly ambiance, was tailor made for a late ’80’s motion picture soundtrack about teens in love. The mid to late ’80’s was oozing with these type of flicks… and songs like Give It Up were all over them. There is nothing wrong with it’s appeal, plus it really does “fit” into this mainstream bag o’ tricks that Constrictor musically advertises.

Teenage Frankenstein… what more can be said than that? At first glance, this song title appears as one a Punk Rock novice might expect to find… on an early Misfits album. Alas, this song is actually the opening track on Constrictor. The lyrical rhyming coupled with Alice Cooper’s very slick vocals, makes this song actually work it’s Hard Rock wonder with me. Metal be thy name.

Once again, I am convinced that fun lyrical content can coexist in Heavy Music… Alice Cooper has proven this with Constrictor. The front cover of Constrictor may lead one to believe it’s a much heavier and darker album than it really is. What this album exchanges for heaviness, it makes up for with it’s good time 80’s feel and attitude. I’ve owned Constrictor for a very long time, upgraded it to CD without thinking twice, in all Metal honesty.

Sometimes it’s the atmosphere of an album of songs that mesmerizes me so. This Alice Cooper album is a fine example of that. I don’t feel a hint of hesitation in recommending this album to any fan of Classic Rock, Hard Rock or 80’s Heavy Metal. Constrictor is a mirror image of it’s pop cultural backdrop of 1986… lot’s of flash, swagger and accessible songs that one can crank up loud, in a church parking lot, without getting hit by lightning.

When I was a young lad, I witnessed both Andre The Giant and Hulk Hogan wrestle live. It was in my old High School Gym too. (This was way before the WWF became super enormous, long before the WWF changed to the WWE). Andre The Giant was an incredibly large human being and Hulk Hogan… he had muscles growing out of his eyeballs for Metal sakes.

ROB ZOMBIE IS BACK. HELLBILLY DELUXE 2 was released on February 2, 2010 on Roadrunner/Loud & Proud Records. If change was in the air, Rob Zombie has not smelled it. Rob Zombie has not even nibbled on the flavor of the month either. Thank the Metal Gods for the fact Rob Zombie has not undergone any self serving and self righteous soul searching with music. What Rob Zombie has created with Hellbilly Deluxe 2 is not the pre-packaged usualness of Heavy Metal. The funky heavy origins of White Zombie will always be hanging out in Rob Zombie’s albums… and why the hell not? Rob Zombie did have a valid Heavy Metal career before his name alone lit up the Metal marquees. Horror themed lyrics, funky grooves, sensational and at times bizarre sound effects, are once again the norm with Rob Zombie. Thank the Metal Gods for that.

If Rob Zombie were to come out with an album that featured acoustic ballads and songs that promoted saving the environment, I would most likely feel like the end was near for certain. Hey, string arrangements are heard on Hellbilly Deluxe 2, (courtesy of Tyler Bates), on The Man Who Laughs. This is the one song where each band member contributed to the writing of it’s music. The string arrangements are chilling, eerie and horror soundtrack material, what else would you expect? Rob Zombie makes any musical idea that comes to his Metal mind sound very cool, once it becomes a song. The percussion and drumming skills of Tommy Clufetos, creates a nightmarish image of one running away from whatever evil entity is chasing them, in my Metal interpretation. At 9:44, The Man Who Laughs is a Rob Zombie nightmare of an epic… which is a Metal compliment.

Werewolf Women Of The S.S. is about telling the truth behind Hitler’s diabolical plans to create a race of super women. Whoa. Now, that is subject matter that I would never, ever, in a million Metal years come up with myself! This is reason #1,000 as to why no one can touch the horrific and melancholic imagination of Rob Zombie. As a bonus, John 5 plays some shades of surf guitar that makes this song all the more surreal. Burn takes it to the Funk and Roll level, the kind of song you want to jump up and down to, in a dark field under a full moon. All Metal kidding aside, Burn really makes me feel like jumping up and down. Piggy D on bass and Tommy Clufetos on drums makes Burn thunder thump, like an invading band of gargantuan aliens from space, taking over a 1970’s disco.

Sick Bubblegum is Rob Zombie and his band accentuating their trademark heaviness with all of it’s non-stop and invitingly corrosive lyrics. This is Rob Zombie Heavy Metal… thank you Mr. Zombie for creating it. You have to look to the living legend of Horror Rock and Horror Metal himself, Alice Cooper, to get an understanding as to why this style of Heavy Metal is so non-negotiable. If you like, you buy and you listen. Rob Zombie has had no problems with people liking or buying over the years… shock and awe sells.

Throw in a clear fact that Rob Zombie has assembled an incredible band behind him… John 5 makes these songs scream Heavy Metal with his creative licks. Jesus Frankenstein is as hair raising as the title suggests, the haunting intro that has more darkness than a remote underground tunnel, John 5 lending a lead that seems to signal the apocalypse and an intermittent chorus of “All hail Jesus Frankenstein”, makes for the embodiment of Horror Heavy Metal legend.

Rob Zombie and John 5 are quite the dynamic Metal duo, I can literally hear the spontaneity that these two must bring to the recording studio, in these songs. (Rob Zombie and John 5 wrote each song, with the exception of The Man Who Laughs, as I noted above). This is Rob Zombie, Hellbilly Deluxe 2, with no artificial or superficial parts or extremities. This album is an eleven part Horror Film for my ears, with Heavy Metal that realistically carries it’s own weight with creativeness that Rocks and lyrics that shocks. Rob Zombie has returned once again… and that’s a sigh of Metal relief.

King Diamond - The Spiders Lullabye large imageKing Diamond, the legendary Metal front man for Mercyful Fate and Horror Metal/Heavy Metal icon. King Diamond and his band have left more than a mark on Heavy Metal history, a chunk of Heavy Metal history is King Diamond. On October 13, 2009, the infamous Metal Blade Records will reissue two King Diamond Classics… The Graveyard and The Spider’s Lullabye. Very cool. Just in time for Halloween… very cool again. Both albums have been re-mastered by King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque. The Spider’s Lullabye was originally released in 1995, with The Graveyard originally released in 1996. Bonus live bootleg footage will be available for download, for those who purchase either of these two reissues. The bonus footage for download will be these three King Diamond songs: The Spider’s Lullabye, Trick Or Treat and Up From The Grave. Reissue’s are always great, especially when they include new songs and/or videos – downloading the bonus content for these albums is fine with me, especially when King Diamond is looking at giving the fans the highest quality in sound and video. Man, I better start saving up some spare change or my Christmas want list is going to be very long with all of the new Metal CD’s that are coming out next month! Metal rules. King Diamond is a big reason why. King Diamond is delivering a Happy Halloween to his fans and all fans of Metal on October 13, 2009.

Cannibal Corpse – no bones about it, they deliver the real Death Metal

4513716If there is one band that I can identify the entire Death Metal genre with, it is Cannibal Corpse. Why do I adore Death Metal? I easily embrace the straight up approach and punishing sound that comes from this music. I really do not care in the least if I cannot make out the lyrics coming from lead vocalist George Fisher. Are the vocals still important? Of course, the cookie monster vocals are the trademark identity of what Death Metal is supposed to sound like! Therefore, if I was to choose my favorite Death Metal band, it is Cannibal Corpse. (Arch Enemy comes in a very, very, close second). Cannibal Corpse and the entire Death Metal genre will probably never receive mainstream media acclaim – who cares. Any Death Metal band could never expect any gratitude from anyone except their fans. That is what makes all Metal so special.

I always grin and basically laugh, when I read articles both past and present, in regards to how the album cover artwork and lyrics offend whoever. My, how different gore and horror is perceived by some, especially when it is delivered musically from a Death Metal icon like Cannibal Corpse! In my rational and educated mind, I perceive gore and horror the same, whether it is portrayed through Death Metal or film, like a Steven King novel or movie, the same for Clive Barker, John Carpenter and Rob Zombie as well. Wes Craven was never one to water down his brand of gore and horror through film. Actually, the single worst and most gruesome way to view and/or listen to gore and horror is to watch the nightly news or 24 hour news networks – choose your evil. At least  with Cannibal Corpse, you know what you are buying when their respective album/CD is in your hands, it is fair warning. The news networks, well, they never give you warning anymore when they show dead bodies, body parts or extreme accidents. (They used to, yet it is no longer cool to warn us viewers. Instead they rather have children sitting at home in front of the television be traumatized for an extended period of time. There is no way on Earth to filter out the gore and horror on the network news). Do the people who are offended by Cannibal Corpse and Death Metal in general get just as annoyed by the news networks? Are you kidding! NO. How about Hollywood Horror films? NO again! Actors, writers, film directors and news networks seem to always get the free pass. We live in a society of constant double standards – what is o.k. for Hollywood horror and slasher movies is not o.k. for Cannibal Corpse or any Death Metal band out there. Yet, once a new Cannibal Corpse album comes out, watch out! Cannibal Corpse gets the self righteous fists shaken at them again!

So, I will continue to listen to Cannibal Corpse for as long as I have ears that work.
