XIBALBA – New LP Streaming At Brooklyn Vegan; Tour Begins This Week

Posted in doom metal, hardcore, hardcore metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

As Hasta La Muerte, the second LP from Southern Cali breakdown warriors XIBABLA, nears release, the North American street date now just one week away. In anticipation of the album’s disbursement, and as the unit prepare to embark on tour in support of the mammoth LP later this week, today Brooklyn Vegan is streaming all of Hasta La Muerte. Test the durability of your office furniture by busting out a wicked statgedive in the workplace to the record’s eleven devastating tales.

Taking their down-tuned assault to iniquitous new dimensions, XIBALBA’s breakdowns hit with the force of tsunamis and their riffs like mires of quicksand on Hasta La Muerte, the band’s intense style infusing some of the most Doom-ridden tones one will experience within the Hardcore genre with unstoppable force. Recorded by Taylor Young (of labelmates Nails), and sought out renowned Death Metal artist Dan Seagrave (Dismember, Entombed, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, etc.) to craft the foreboding cover art.

Hasta La Muerte will hit the streets via Southern Lord Records on August 14th in North America, just four days into their month-long North American tour with Alpha & Omega as well as labelmates Power Trip for most of the trek. The action begins at The Power Of The Riff West in Los Angeles this Saturday, August 11th and includes another performance at the first installment of The Power Of The Riff East in Brooklyn on September 1st.

Check out full live sets and more XIBALBA mayhem AT THIS LOCATION.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Tuesday, August 7th, 2012

Posted in food, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on August 7, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Holy Metal crap, it’s already August 7th! When does time ever seem to slow down? Have you been scrambling lately trying to keep up on new album releases? I have. I’m always scrambling… like an egg in a frying pan! At the end of my Metal day, it’s all about being alive and being grateful for family, friends, Metal Buddies and…

If you want to get your eardrums pounded by some (Crossover) Thrash Metal that is super saturated with FUN and Old School vibes, while not missing a beat on total ass-kicking impact, then the recently released Municipal Waste album is for you. (See top of post). The Fatal Feast (Waste In Space) was released back on April 10th, via Nuclear Blast America. Metal as my witness, I cannot stop listening to this new Municipal Waste album. It just sounds and feels so F’n good. Metal be thy name.

Okay, okay. We’ll talk food. Geez. After all, food is… METAL.

On that trip I took to Ohio with my wife back in July, we did stop to eat at another restaurant besides Champps. Skyline Chili was recommended to us by the airport shuttle bus driver. Located in Dayton, Ohio, Skyline Chili served up both fantastic service and most importantly… terrific food. The fantastic service came courtesy of a super-duper friendly waitress named: Charlee.

I realize that there are many female spelling variants for this name, so I chose one at random. If Charlee ever comes across this post, I hope she can direct me to the proper spelling of her name! Charlee is a college student and aspiring entertainment journalist. Rock on.

Below is a fine example of what my wife and I ordered for lunch at Skyline Chili on our visit. After my wife and I ate this bounty of food, we didn’t eat dinner that night! Nor did we eat breakfast the next day! Whoa!

Last and definitely not least, I have decided to write for Brian Basher’s Hard Rock Nights. There are editorial responsibilities included too. Metal Buddy Brian Basher asked and Stone said… “Let’s Rock.”

Don’t panic! Metal Odyssey isn’t going away! I will still pump-out the Metal and Extreme Metal news, Metal & Rock ‘N Roll thoughts, album reviews and off-beat stuff (such as restaurants I’ve eaten at), right here!. Metal Odyssey is my Metal sanctuary; so rest assured you’ll always find something new about Metal (and Rock ‘N Roll) here, my Metal brethren!

COVEN 13 – To Perform At Hammer Of Doom Festival 2012

Posted in doom metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal festivals, metal music, Music, rock festivals, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 7, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Legendary U.S. Doom act COVEN (also known as COVEN 13) has been confirmed to appear at Germany’s Hammer of Doom Festival on November 10, 2012 at Posthalle in Würzburg. The festival begins on November 9th for Epic Night at which ROSS THE BOSS will headline. COVEN will join PENTAGRAM, THE SKULL, SOLSTICE and others in performing the next day, appropriately called Doomsday!

Visit Hammer Of Doom Festival for more information on the fest.

Shadow Kingdom Records reissued COVEN’s legendary 1987 album Worship New Gods on July 31st of this year. This reissue marks the first official release of Worship New Gods on CD and is available at www.shadowkingdomrecords.com.

“It’s impossible to make albums that sound like this anymore, and for that we’re thankful that Shadow Kingdom are bringing back bands that sound live Coven.” Decibel

“Coven’s Worship New Gods reveals the best of the underbelly of American underground heavy metal from the Eighties. Easily recommended.” – Dangerdog

“Its antiquity will only serve in its favor, as it conjures forth a genuine nostalgia for the 80s efforts of bands like Cirith Ungol, Pentagram, Manilla Road and St. Vitus. Sword and sorcery spent in harmonious, atmospheric flesh with plenty of variation to keep the listener hooked as if he/she were smoking a bone while deeply immersed in a Fritz Leiber or Michael Moorcock story.” – From the Dust Returned

“There’s really no reason to not take the time out and hear this underground gem you probably never even knew existed.” – Apoch’s Metal Review

“Worship New Gods” is an enjoyable album of contrasts, melodic soft interludes between occult like slabs of heaviness, but at all times fresh (For the time) and interesting. Happy 25th birthday!” Destructive Music

METAL PRAISE FOR VEX:

“You might be quite surprised to discover that Vex are some long obscured treasure of progressive, moody melodic death/black/thrash metal that seems rather uncanny hailing from Texas, one of the brutal death capitals of the States. Here we’ve got something well off the beaten path, even though the stones paving said path have been lifted from more frequently traveled concourses.” – From the Dust Returned

“There is an emotional depth and reserved wisdom to the band’s songwriting which speaks of a forgotten style of black/death metal; the kind practiced by such genre forefathers as Dissection, Rotting Christ or Mortuary Drape.” – Metal Army America

REVOLTING – Hymns of Ghastly Horror to be Released Sept 7th on FDA Rekotz

Posted in Death Metal, death metal bands, Extreme Metal, extreme music, Heavy Metal, horror, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Hymns of Ghastly Horror is the fourth album from Swedish cult band REVOLTING and it is scheduled to arrive internationally September 7th on FDA Rekotz in CD and digital formats. The vinyl LP version will be released on November 16th.  On the new album, REVOLTING offers the finest in classic, yet distinct Swedish Death Metal.

Specifically, REVOLTING returns with an album most demonstrative of their knack for creating those unforgettable necro-melodies, crusty grooves, and unmitigated brute force that has defined their songwriting development to date. The nine tracks of Hymns of Ghastly Horror will enter through the auditory canals and lodge in the brain like tumors! A definite recommendation for fans of EDGE OF SANITY, DISMEMBER, and ENTRAILS.

Check out the promo clip for album track “The Mother of Darkness” below!

Hymns of Ghastly Horror – Track Listing:

1. The Mother Of Darkness

2. Their Thoughts Can Kill

3. Ravenous Alien Spawn

4. The Black Queen

5. The Thing That C.H.U.D. Not Be (inst)

6. Psychoplasmics

7. Prey To Katahdin

8. Kinderfeeder

9. The Hatchet Murders

________________________________________

REVOLTING is the new band from Rogga Johansson (Paganizer, Ribspreader, The Grotesquery, Demiurg, Putrevore) which is dedicated to the HORROR/GORE films from the 1980’s! With today’s modern horror sucking beyond redemption and Death Metal being plagued by rap, emo, and fake boring “brutality”, Revolting felt it was time to do a truly PURE and ugly, rotting, putrid Death Metal band for the love of it and to get back to the basics of what all of this madness is about anyway!

Swimming In Fire – Featuring: Greg Hampton, Danny Saber, Eric Dover & Chris Collier

Posted in alternative metal, alternative rock, experimental music, experimental rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 5, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

SWIMMING IN FIRE – The dynamically Rockin’ duo of Greg Hampton (Alice Cooper, 9 Chambers, Lita Ford, The New Czars) and Danny Saber (U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Marilyn Manson) have founded and are currently collaborating/producing a new project they’ve called: Swimming In Fire.

With Eric Dover (Slash’s Snakepit, Alice Cooper) and Chris Collier joining on, Swimming In Fire is a potent supergroup of seasoned songwriters and multi-instrumentalists to keep your ears and eyes on today and tomorrow!

Two words to know: Alternative. Experimental. Yes, Swimming In Fire are playing cutting-edge music and it’s still radiating some hard and heavy persona that Heavy Metal and Hard Rock diehards scream for. Expect the electronic gates of sound to open up and introduce you to what Greg Hampton and Danny Saber have created here with their project.

Incorporating driving guitars and melodic vocals into their songs is only just the beginning, with this creative band. There’s plenty of Alternative and Experimental nuances happening musically; this all makes the music from Swimming In Fire a true Rock ‘N Roll delicacy in the making.

I’m looking forward to hearing the eventual debut album from Swimming In Fire, these guys are onto capturing a sound that is both highly relevant and contagious. Metal be thy name.

Take a listen to three songs that are already streaming on Swimming In Fire’s facebook and Reverbnation sites, by clicking on the links below!

ORCHID – Announce New EP: “HERETIC”

Posted in doom rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 4, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

San Francisco based Doom Rockers, ORCHID, have announced to release an EP featuring 3 brand new tracks + 1 song from the latest full-length album, Capricorn, on September 7, 2012.

The EP, entitled Heretic, marks the first release for Nuclear Blast and will be released both digitally as well as on 10″ vinyl.

____________________________

HERETIC – Track List:

01. Heretic

02. Falling Away

03. Saviours Of The Blind

04. He Who Walks Alone

Commented guitarist Mark Baker: “Late in 2010, after we submitted the „Capricorn“ full length to our label and waited for the release, we realized that there wouldn’t be any extensive touring, so we just kept writing and rehearsing new material. A few months later, we were back in the studio cutting basics for new songs. By the time we finished the business of changing labels, we had way more than one album worth of new songs. We, along with Nuclear Blast, decided it would be a great idea to release a few of those on an EP this year while we wrap up everything for our next full length. We’re really excited for people worldwide to get a chance to check out what we’ve been up to in the last year. These new songs have the classic, anthemic ORCHID sound that people expect from us, along with a few elements that we’ve never shown before.”

JACKYL “Best In Show” – FUN Has Returned To Hard Rock Once Again, Courtesy Of JACKYL!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news, southern rock with tags , , , , , , on August 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

JACKYL – On July 31st, 2012, Georgia’s very own JACKYL released their 7th studio album, Best In Show, via MIGHTY LOUD / Fontana Distribution. Jesse James Dupree and his band have once again put the FUN back into Hard Rock. JACKYL’s southern fried attitude and flavor reigns supreme on Best In Show and I honestly LOVE this album more than their 2010 studio album: When Moonshine and Dynamite Collide. (And I really appreciated that last album from this band too).

The songs lyrics on Best In Show are FUN to listen to and I couldn’t expect any less from JACKYL. Couple this with a total impact of ass kicking Hard Rock and Best In Show has already earned its reservation on Metal Odyssey’s “Best Hard Rock Albums Of 2012” list. JACKYL has recorded an album that is a 100% escape from my (silly) worries over bills, warm beer, a crappy economy and lousy service at any McDonalds drive-thru window. Whoa.

Top to bottom and side to side, Best In Show is a SOLID reason as to why JACKYL is still around after 20 years playing Heavy Rock ‘N Roll; the kind of Rock ‘N Roll to piss off your elitist neighbors that have never waved to you. I ran into my elder Metalhead hermit buddy, up in the remote woods of North/Central Pennsylvania late yesterday. He told me: “Stone, they just don’t make ’em like that JACKYL band anymore… All-American and blue-collar Hard Rock never surrenders.” I commented back to him: “Metal be thy name, you are so F’n right.”

My favorite song among favorite songs on Best In Show is: Golden Spookytooth. The thumpin’ and stompin’ Rock ‘N Roll that JACKYL plays is as refreshing to my ears, as a pot of home-made mashed potatoes is to my stomach. Down-home Hard Rock is JACKYL and they’ve brought it in heaping piles with Best In Show. Their cover version of Cover Of The Rolling Stone is damn cool stuff. (This song was originally recorded and made famous by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show).

Better Than Chicken is a KEEPER of a song. Metal as my witness, this song has erased any dumb-ass and downer mood I could potentially be in for the next couple of years. Sample this new JACKYL online, seek-it-out and BUY IT! That’s it. This JACKYL review is over now. I gotta go and run some F’n errands while I crank up Best In Show in the car… and nuthin’ will get under my skin cause JACKYL has set me Rockin’ straight… again.

There is a hidden 12th track. A Cover of It’s Tricky by RUN-D.M.C. It’s a cool good-times, party till dawn sing-a-long song; 1part Rap, 1 part Rock ‘N Roll. I dig it. As Lenny Wolf of Kingdom Come would say: “It is what it is.”

ALL HAIL THE YETI – Los Angeles Stoner Metal Act’s Debut LP Nears Release On AFM Records

Posted in Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, sludge metal, stoner rock with tags , , , , , , on August 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

German Metal juggernaut AFM Records has signed crushing Los Angeles-based Metal quartet ALL HAIL THE YETI, the band’s self-titled debut album now confirmed for North American release on August 28th! Uniting elements of Sludge Metal, Hardcore and groove-laden Hard Rock, ALL HAIL THE YETI unify these influences into their own diverse, modern style which is delivered in a way to make people move.

ALL HAIL THE YETI‘s self-titled debut album captures the act’s most crushing tunes to date, with over a solid hour of energized thunderous riffage. The band has documented the creation of the album as well as the band’s overall whiskey-soaked, fight-fueled, locked-cocked-and-ready-to-rock approach, liberated through a killer new trailer viewable AT THIS LOCATION.

Featuring well-known tattoo artist Connor Garritty of Timeless Tattoos in L.A., ALL HAIL THE YETI have forged their own path through what they see as a desolate Hollywood music scene, the hard-working unit dead-set against burning out like so many bands from the same town and scene have, over the past few decades of heavy music. Coinciding with their 2010-released Trees On Fire With Songs OF Blood EP, the band broke into the local scene with a surge of shows which led them to support slots for major national acts including Times of Grace, Soulfly, Fear Factory, Suicide Silence and more.

With no record deal in place at the time, last year AHTY took it upon themselves to get things moving and entered the studio with producers Tommy Decker and Mike Sarkisyan to record their self-titled, debut LP. Upon its completion, the album received attention from several labels, and after some talks with AFM about the direction and goals of the band, happily took the deal the label offered them for the release of All Hail The Yeti.

Stay tuned for live updates and much more on ALL HAIL THE YETI as they stomp their way into the international scene in the months ahead.

All Hail The Yeti Track Listing:

01. Deep Creek

02. When The Sky Falls

03. Suicide Woods

04. The Weak and Wounded (Prelude to Flames)

05. After The Great Fire

06. Bloodguilt

07. The Art Of Mourning

08. I Am Wendigod

09. Axe Murder Hollow

10. Ruby Ridge (Every Knee Shall Bow)

11. Judas Cradle

VISION DIVINE – To Release New Studio Album “Destination Set To Nowhere” This Fall

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, Power Metal, power metal bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on August 2, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Progressive Power Metal voyagers VISION DIVINE, the band founded by guitarist/songwriter Olaf Thorsen (Labyrinth) and singer Fabio Lione (known for his work in Rhapsody, Rhapsody Of Fire and most recently for having served as lead vocalist with Kamelot during their Poetry For The Poisoned tour) announce the release of their new studio album, Destination Set To Nowhere. Set to drop in North America on September 18, 2012 via Eagle Rock imprint Armoury Records, the band’s seventh full-length offers up a melting pot of Epic Metal anthems with a futuristic twist.

Featuring 11 tracks, the saga follows a man’s journey through outer space. He, along with other like-minded individuals, fled the earth out of social-political frustration. Together they eventually locate a new planet to inhabit where they could truly live out their visions of peace. Slowly though, they revert to the same ideologies they meant to leave behind. The only escape is to set out again, one man leaving alone: destination set to nowhere.

Comments Olaf Thorsen of the offering: “We are sure this album will finally give us the chance to show all of our potential; we worked hard on it in order to give the best possible album. In the end, we went even beyond our expectations thanks to the excitement and the good vibes we got from starting this adventure.”

About The Amory WarsAn epic, sci-fi fantasy set in an alternate universe (Heaven’s Fence) that chronicles the rise of superhuman dictator Wilhelm Ryan, and the one family that could hold the key to liberating the world from his tyrannical reign. The mythology was originally created by Sanchez to serve as inspiration for the band’s albums, but the series expanded to other mediums, including both prose and graphic novels.

About The Afterman:  Sirius Amory, the most celebrated astronomer/scientist in the alternate universe of Heaven’s Fence is ‘‘The Afterman.’  Sirius (pronounced “Sy-ruhss”) is credited with the discovery of the energy force (known as The Keywork) that binds the 78 planets of these worlds together. He embarks on the greatest discovery of his existence, and possibly mankind’s.  By doing so, what is truly most important to him begins to slip right through his fingers
