Right now, the best way I can speak about how I feel is through the music I love. Recently, my Dad has had his setbacks with his health. My cousin Mike has had a serious health setback as well in recent days. I love them both and dedicate Rainbow’s incredible song Power to both of them. Regardless of what faith you may hold in your heart, regardless if you believe or don’t believe in God, please cheer these two amazing dudes on for Stone. They can both use some Power right about now.

LONG LIVE MY DAD.

KING KOBRA – Veteran Hard Rockers Are Back With A Venomous New Album!

Posted in classic rock, Hair Metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 15, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Frontiers Records is excited to announce the release of the Self-Titled come back album from KING KOBRA on April 15th in Europe and May 5th in North America.

Formed in 1984 by legendary drummer Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne), Los Angeles heavy metal outfit King Kobra recorded two critically acclaimed albums for Capitol Records – the 1985 release ‘Ready to Strike’ and 1986’s ‘Thrill of a Lifetime’.

Along with Carmine, the band featured four relatively unknown musicians at the time – David Michael-Philips and Mick Sweda on guitar, Johnny Rod on bass and Mark Free on lead vocals. King Kobra toured the U.S., Canada, Europe and Mexico playing shows with Kiss, Iron Maiden, Quiet Riot, Ted Nugent, Queensryche and Autograph.

The band was featured regularly on MTV and performed the theme song for the #1 1986 motion picture “Iron Eagle“. After disbanding in 1988, each member continued his career in other successful major-label groups – Carmine to Blue Murder (Geffen), Mark Free to Unruly Child (Interscope), Mick Sweda to the BulletBoys (Warner Bros.), Johnny Rod to W.A.S.P. (Capitol/EMI) and David Michael-Philips to Lizzy Borden (Metal Blade).

The year 2010 saw the band reunite the original classic ’85 lineup, replacing original singer Mark Free (now Marcie Free) with veteran lead vocalist Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt, Quiet Riot). “This album captures all the great points we had in the 80’s, but better” says Carmine AppiceThe music is more traditional King Kobra music. Great lyrics, kick ass songs with cool hooks and  really good playing. A really great hard rock/metal record with lots of energy”. David Michael-Phillips adds “It truly is an all-star album. Paul Shortino is amazing! I can honestly say he is one of the best vocalists in the business along with being one of the nicest and most generous people I have ever met”.

The band is planning to get on some targeted American and European summer festivals this year. Watch out: King Kobra is smokin’ hot, back stronger than ever and “Ready to Strike” once again!

The new album “King Kobra” will include the following tracks: Rock This House, Turn Up The Good (Times), Live Forever, Tear Down The Walls, This Is How We Roll, Midnight Woman, We Got A Fever, Tope Of The World, You Make It Easy, Cryin’ Turns To Rain, Screamin’ For More, Fade Away.

KING KOBRA

* Paul Shortino – vocals

* David Michael-Philips – Guitar

* Mick Sweda – Guitar

* Johnny Rod – Bass Guitar

* Carmine Appice – drums

Some Music Suggestions For a Hard Rockin’ and Headbangin’ Valentines Day!

Posted in classic rock, Hair Metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, holidays, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 14, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

What would Valentines Day be without some KISS – Lick It Up?

Happy Valentines Day to all! Even if you despise Valentines Day, Metal Odyssey is still wishing you a terrific day. To make your Valentines Day all the more enjoyable, here are some helpful music listening suggestions that kinda goes with the Valentines Day flow… I think you’ll see and hear what I mean! Enjoy these suggestions… and if you don’t like ’em, just don’t seek ’em out and listen to ’em. It’s that easy!

Just the name alone is good enough with Ann and Nancy Wilson’s band! I LOVE Heart. As a bonus, their 1978 studio album Magazine has a 100% pure Classic Rock song titled: Heartless. Oh, by the way, Heart should be inducted into that, um, Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Did I say I LOVE Heart?

Hey, it’s KISS again! C’mon, just their name alone is associated with that four letter word we know as… love. This 1977 album is titled Love Gun for Metal sakes too! Just listen to these Klassic KISS songs on Love Gun and you might be falling in love all over again while your banging thy head: Love Gun, I Stole Your Love, Got Love For Sale and Then She Kissed Me. I’ll let all your minds wander with Plaster Caster.

A Classic Rock album that bumps and thumps and never loses that Texas groovin’ boogie beat! ZZ Top released Eliminator back in 1983 and it has never lost it’s Rock ‘n’ Roll luster with Stone. You might not want to give your Valentine any TV Dinners, just become a Sharp Dressed Man and take your gal out somewhere nice. At the end of the night ask her: Gimme All Your Lovin.

Lita Ford has made some lovin’ filled songs throughout her legendary Heavy Metal career. Her 1988 self-titled and third studio album boasts some songs that are sure to spark some Valentines Day thoughts… no matter how melancholy or gray they may be. Kiss Me Deadly, Can’t Catch Me, Falling In and Out of Love and Fatal Passion are all on this Lita album.

To say this 1990 debut and self-titled album from Steelheart is love infested is a Metal understatement. Just take a Metal listen to these songs on this album and you might get all soft inside while you try to bang thy head: Love Ain’t Easy, Can’t Stop Me Lovin’ You, I’ll Never Let You Go and Everybody Loves Eileen. Gee Metal whiz… I’m getting all soft inside while I write these songs down. I really like this band and album too.

Yes, Rainbow. This band for all intents and Metal purposes ROCKED my world then… and they ROCK my world now. The Very Best Of Rainbow was released back in 1997 and has one of many classics they created – Jealous Lover. Joe Lynn Turner is the vocalist on Jealous Lover. I swear I can listen to this song 100 times in a row and still want to listen to it 100 times more. Did I say Ritchie Blackmore rules?

Bullet For My Valentine. This band is HUGE in Stone’s Metal world. Scream Aim Fire is the second studio album from this Welsh Metal Band and it is worth owning if you like your Metal laced with melodic heaviness. This is an album of SONGS… and one of these fabulous songs is: Hearts Burst Into Fire. Whoa, this song is very, very, incredibly memorable to my Metal mind. I always tell myself that I sing this song really cool. No, I won’t sing it for you.

This list would be useless without the late and ultra-legendary Ronnie James Dio being on it. Holy Diver was released back in 1983, being the debut DIO album too. I have come to the Metal conclusion that Holy Diver is one of the greatest Heavy Metal albums of all time… and one of the greatest albums in Rock history. Straight Through The Heart is my Valentine pick off of this album. ‘Nuff said.

Oh yes… Rod Stewart. Rock Legend. This was Rod Stewart when he ROCKED! Admittedly, Rod the Mod’s easy listening stuff isn’t the end of the world to my ears. I would pay to see Rod Stewart sing from his Great American Songbook live in 2011. However, I’ll take the Hard Rockin’ Rod Stewart over his present day crooning any day of the week.

Back in 1978 I would try all day long to pull in Do Ya Think I’m Sexy on the radio. I would do that. What was wrong with me you query? Absolutely nothing… I really dug this song and still do. Another “love” song on this Blondes Have More Fun album is – Ain’t Love A Bitch. Throw in the fact that the legendary Carmine Appice plays drums on this album and it’s a Classic Rock keeper.

Oops… it’s KISS again! Rock And Roll Over is the fifth studio album from KISS, released during the U.S. Bicentennial Year of 1976. What more can be said about a KISS Klassic such as this? Calling Dr. Love, I Want You, Take Me, Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em and Makin’ Love are all here. Um, I’ll let your mind wander once more with Ladies Room.

LONG LIVE VALENTINES DAY.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY, NILLA.

GET SCARED “EP” – 3 Songs of Rippin’, Electric and Hard Rockin’ Vitality!

Posted in alternative metal, alternative rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 13, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

GET SCARED – This 3 song EP from Layton Utah’s Hard Rockin’ trio known as GET SCARED was originally released back on October 5th of 2010 (Universal Motown) as a Hot Topic only exclusive. Now, this EP is available anywhere there is cool music being sold: Hot Topic, iTunes and Amazon.com to name a few. Over the years I’ve always gravitated toward the “power” of an EP, it’s a dandy way for a band to introduce themselves to new fans and reintroduce their music to their already set-in-place fandom.

GET SCARED is no newcomer to the Rock block with this new EP, their critically applauded six song EP Cheap Tricks and Theatrics was self-released back on September 8th, 2009. This do-it-yourself band of Hard Rockin’ merriment has garnered a most impressive following on YouTube and just about anywhere else you can imagine. It’s their hard work, music and style of GET SCARED that is making them a household name and not due to some overpaid televised talent show judge who is force feeding us to adore them.

With stellar and young Rockin’ guns like Escape The Fate taking GET SCARED on tour with them, the respect amongst their peers is growing parallel with their fans. Sarcasm, Voodoo and Deepest Cut are the three songs you will hear on this EP… and the desire of wanting to hear more from GET SCARED is totally normal after your very first listen… so don’t panic if you find yourself feeling this way. As I take in the all encompassing energy that GET SCARED emanates from their songs on this EP, I’m in turn giving my brain the ten minute workout it needs for Rock ‘n’ Roll endurance.

What are the Hard Rockin’ forces that drives this GET SCARED machine? The answer is both the confident vocals and the dexterous musicianship. Warning: You just might find yourself bouncing up and down like an out of control human piston, if you are to wisely let these songs from GET SCARED gain Rockin’ access into your senses. While you are listening to this EP, the psyche-you-out moments may come a knockin’ and it’s best to let ’em all in. It’s the multi-combination of this band’s aggressive Hard Rock moments, moxie, unbridled relevance, harmonious vocals and the unfailing melodic nature of these three songs that makes this EP and GET SCARED notably memorable.

Metal Odyssey’s Stone gives this GET SCARED EP 4 Out of 5 Metal Fists!

* These songs are taken from the highly anticipated upcoming GET SCARED album Best Kind Of Mess – releasing in Spring 2011.

DÅÅTH “Genocidal Maniac” – Atlanta Metal Delivers On The Extreme!

Posted in Death Metal, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , on February 12, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

DÅÅTH – Atlanta Georgia’s very own Extreme Metal ambassadors DÅÅTH released their fourth studio album back on October 25th, 2010, via Century Media Records. To say this self titled album from DÅÅTH is Metal at it’s Extreme finest is an understatement. This is a band that has gained more strength and Metal momentum as each studio album of theirs gets released. This cohesive Metal Band mixes up styles that range from Death to Progressive Metal, while never losing a firm grip on the Extreme.

Genocidal Maniac is the opening track from DÅÅTH and I just love the instrumental buildup of this song, every single note about it. I so enjoy listening to the guitars of Emil Werstler and Eyal Levi. Whoa. At around 2:08 into Genocidal Maniac, Sean Z. comes in with his Extreme vocals. Sean Z. makes this song catapult into a higher level of extremity. The feeling I get when I listen to DÅÅTH is one of being frozen into a state of Metal shock. All I can do is listen and let my senses get pummeled into a state of Metal awe.

Listen for yourself below and let some DÅÅTH invade your ear space with Genocidal Maniac. It may just serve you right!

LITA FORD “Out For Blood” – Revisiting Lita’s 1983 Debut Album

Posted in classic rock, glam metal, Hair Metal, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on February 11, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

LITA FORD – First, let me point out that this debut album from Lita Ford is out of print. Yes, Out For Blood is not going to be purchased on the cheap. Brand new CD’s of Out For Blood are selling on Amazon.com, with currently four to choose from. The price range for a “new/unopened” copy of Out For Blood is $99.82 to $193.96. (U.S. funds). Plus, you have to add $2.98 in shipping cost! Whoa, who would have thought this debut album from Lita Ford would be this rare on CD? I’m certain finding Out For Blood in mint condition on vinyl is no easy Metal task either. Vinyl is listed at Amazon.com with a price range of $4.78 to $19.98, (U.S. funds), depending on condition.

There is a light at the end of the Metal tunnel though… used copies of Out For Blood are available at Amazon.com and there is a price range once again! Are you ready? Here it is: $17.98 to $91.48. Again, add $2.98 for shipping. I’ll say this much, I’m very much at peace with owning the cassette version of Out For Blood… for now. My Out For Blood cassette plays just fine and it’s in Metal mint shape too. Before you run over to Itunes… let me warn you… Out For Blood is not for sale there. “Out of print” often times covers the digital download retail world too.

Out For Blood was released on Mercury Records, back in 1983. Lita Ford’s new solo career following her five year years with The Runaways had just begun! The Runaways had formed in 1975 and broke up in 1979. Heavy Metal and Hard Rock was obviously on Lita Ford’s mind and in her heart. From 1983 to 2009, Lita Ford released seven studio albums and her catalog of music does back up her obvious loyalty to the heavier side of Rock. Certainly, one can point at the album cover (both versions) for Out For Blood and state this exemplifies Hair Metal of the early 80’s. Lita Ford can very well be considered a pioneer of the Hair Metal genre… no argument from Stone here.

Besides looking like a sexy Heavy Metal goddess on this Out For Blood album cover, I always felt the real deal about Lita Ford was the music heard within these songs. Back in 1983, there wasn’t an abundance of female Heavy Metal vocalists out there… especially one’s that played some lean and mean guitar like Lita. I took to Lita Ford from the onset and no, it wasn’t all due to her looking so hot. (Well, it did help). Hey, a hot blooded seventeen year old Metalhead in 1983 is gonna have his fantasy crushes and Lita Ford caused quite abuzz amongst my buddies too back then. Heck, with the likes of Ozzy, Angus, Lemmy and Cronos staring at me from the pages of mags and posters back then, seeing Lita Ford grace an album cover was much more easier on my eyes! Metal be thy name.

After all these years, um, decades, there has never been any question with me that Lita Ford can sing and play some slick guitar licks. This Out For Blood album is where Lita Ford catapulted herself into the Heavy Metal realm. Out For Blood is still a (gasp) fun and Rockin’ listen for me today. For all the Hair Metal and 80’s Heavy Metal/Arena Rock maniacs out there: not owning this Lita Ford album is a tragic misfortune. Listening to Out For Blood in 2011 brings me back to those days, when I was being mesmerized by the hour from a never ceasing influx of Heavy Metal bands. I’ll say it again in different words, Lita Ford really lets loose some melodic leads and cool riffs while not being shy of laying down some psyche-you-out solos.

Any Metalhead from this early 80’s era who says they never played some air guitar to a Lita Ford album is, well, their nose is growing by the second. It’s time to come clean, my fellow Metalhead air guitar brothers. Regardless of anyone’s personal opinion to the contrary, Lita Ford and Out For Blood represents an important and historic chapter in Heavy Metal and Hard Rock history, in my Metal opinion. Lita Ford, along with her former Runaways band mate Joan Jett, (and I can never forget) Pat Benatar, all made me realize those many years ago, that yes, girls can really… ROCK.

* My mentioning Amazon.com in this and other posts is not my endorsing them. The same goes for Itunes. Metal Odyssey receives nothing in return from Amazon.com or Itunes, whenever they are mentioned in any post. I just feel that Amazon.com makes for a fair and realistic measuring “device” to see what these classic albums/CD’s are selling for in the current marketplace.

Above: The original 1983 album cover of Out For Blood. The album cover shown at the top of this post is the re-released version. My cassette of Out For Blood is the re-release version.

* Out For Blood was produced by Neil Merryweather. The executive producer was Artie Ripp.

Winter of 2011: Two Album Titles of “Winter” That Sums It Up Best

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, weather news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 10, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

So far, the winter of 2011 has been very, very, very, very, very, very, extremely, positively, absolutely, F’n cold, icy and snowy. If you live in the Midwest, New England or the Mid Atlantic States then you MUST know what I’m talking, um, complaining about. Eastern/Central Pennsylvania has not been immune from the ravaging cold, ice and snow from this 2011 Winter season.

I can recall, about a week ago, driving my kids to the bus stop, (yeah, it was too damn icy and cold to walk), when I looked down at the temperature gauge in the car… minus 7 degrees fahrenheit. MINUS 7 DEGREES! Tonight, the temperature is going to be in the “single” digits. I realize there are places on this planet that have much colder temperatures, I’m just letting out a tiny Winter rant right now. Call it a “touch” of the Winter bluesMetal be thy name.

Here art two very cool, (get it, cool?), album titles that best sum up this nasty Winter of 2011:

SAVATAGE – Dead Winter Dead (1995)

O.k., so I used this same SAVATAGE album title and cover to complain about the Blizzard of 2010… “Part II” last year. So what. This album title and cover gets my Metal point across. Plus this album kicks Metal butt too.

Cinderella – Long Cold Winter (1988)

Yup, just as this 1988 Cinderella album title states, it has been a Long Cold Winter. I feel like taking a Gypsy Road straight down to where there’s some warmer weather. Then again, as my loving/late mother used to say to me when I was a young lad: If You Don’t Like It, then tough.

I guess I’ll just count my blessings and be glad that I’m just alive… and put up with this Winter of 2011 for a little while longer. Heck, that damn otter, um, ground hog didn’t see his shadow this year either. That’s good news. I’ll bank on what that oversized squirrel didn’t see and be done with it.

LONG LIVE SPRING.

LONG LIVE THAT GROUNDHOG.

ANA KEFR – “The Burial Tree (II)” Progressively Extreme and Resists Metal Boundaries

Posted in avant-garde music, Extreme Metal, extreme music, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on February 9, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ANA KEFRThe Burial Tree (II) is the follow up to Volume 1, Ana Kefr’s critically acclaimed full-length debut released back in 2009. Both of these albums have been handed off to the Metal world via their own imprint label: Muse Sick. With a May 3rd, 2011 release date solidified, Ana Kefr’s new album is already making more noise than a sold out Arena of Detroit Red Wings fans. Originating from Riverside, California, Ana Kefr combines Extreme Metal with with progressive elements aplenty.

With smart and philosophical lyrics, Ana Kefr may have very well created their own Metal genre, which I’ll call – Thinking Man’s Extreme Metal. Maybe an easier label to blanket Ana Kefr with is Progressive Extreme Metal, only that would be too academic. Making things easier for us all, I’ll take a line from Hard Rock warriors Tesla: Call it what you want. I’m calling Ana Kefr an open book Extreme Metal Band… Metal be thy name.

It’s very easy to get caught up in Metal genre labels, with that said, Ana Kefr is not going to punch out at the Extreme Metal time clock anytime soon. Time is on this band’s side. What Ana Kefr brings with their extremity is layers of sounds that are so intriguing, my captivation level had reached an all new high while listening to The Burial Tree (II)… and that was during my initial listen through. What Ana Kefr has convincingly conveyed to my ears, is musical influences do not have to stand out as a bulls-eye within the structures of their songs. Ana Kefr has a keen ability to make their musical mood evolve into a potpourri of tonal originality, regardless if they are not pioneers of Metal experimentalism. Musical influences I or anyone else hears within an album of songs, is undeniably subjective. Still, the fun begins once my perception of sound takes that daringly brave leap. I’ll continue onward…

Between the Metal linings of Ana Kefr’s music, I sense influences ranging from Queensryche to Savatage, with a possible yet legitimately subtle nod to Cradle Of Filth. Do I dare state that quite logically, a reference point may have once been The Electric Light Orchestra when it comes to the atmospheric elements to The Burial Tree (II)? Maybe and maybe not. The Trans Siberian Orchestra epic-like canvas of sound hurls itself straight upon my ears from the sensory presence of The Burial Tree (II). Only this band bestows a much darker, outwardly aggresivemainstream shattering and stormier presentation of music and this album’s non-conforming bark is as muscular as it’s Extreme laden bite. The Burial Tree (II) is a box of puzzle pieces that unloads in my brain, then gets put together fluidly as each song spills forth it’s uniqueness of musical character.

Rhiis D. Lopez creates the feelings and sounds that drive Ana Kefr’s music to such elegantly Extreme profoundness with his wizardry on the keys, not to mention his emotionally Extreme vocals, resulting in that open air journey of the mind I’ve signed on to, before I can even refuse. Around each bend, through the maniacal twists and turns, are those sounds and vibrations that may just go unnoticed after the first six or maybe seven listens of The Burial Tree (II), Ana Kefr is that enterprising of a band. Can Ana Kefr be too complex for their own good? In my Metal opinion, not in this post-Millennium decade.

A thinking man’s Metal will stop me in my tracks, making me realize that there is much more to know and explore about music and it’s infinite possibilities. With a clarinet and saxophone being introduced to the musical repertoire of The Burial Tree (II), Ana Kefr is careful enough to not overstep and become overly creative. Not to dissect apart a need for woodwinds in an already progressively driven atmosphere of Metal, the level of their use substantiates Ana Kefr’s belief in less is more when it comes to not over exploiting these ageless instruments. Devouring an album such as The Burial Tree (II) overnight or over the course of a two week period is absurd. This is an album and a band that just might become your Metal companion for your mind… the big and thick book you can’t push aside.

Expect Blackened Death vocals, searing guitar parts that boils over and gives way to melody, unexpected episodes of calm, with a bounty of synthetic fullness that engulfs the top and background of these 14 songs heard on The Burial Tree (II). All the while, the Extreme Metal direction that Ana Kefr travels never goes astray from it’s determined path of being the equalizer. To put it best, mainstream would walk on the other side of the street upon seeing Ana Kefr emerging from the darkened alley.

Ana Kefr does not present a cut and dry approach, nor do they administer a cut and dry sound to sum up in a tidy album review for Metal aficionado’s on the go. What I will say, is Ana Kefr remarkably joins the highs with the lows, impeccably balancing each song’s tempo and personality to eye popping approval. Those eyes popping are mine by the way. When a band can take me aboard their musical journey, regardless of how Extreme or mellow it may be and bring me to a place I’ve never been before, then that band deserves my Metal commendation. The Burial Tree (II) is a Metal album that encompasses musical elements of various Metal genres. These are intelligent musicians that have given thought to their music and lyric’s complexity and made a fearless album of songs along the way. Ana Kefr shook up my Metal soul with The Burial Tree (II), I’m quite certain they will try to eventually seize it altogether. Metal be thy name, I can’t let it go just yet.

The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection – Revisiting This Guitar Legend’s 1991 Greatest Hits

Posted in classic rock, guitarists, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, neoclassical metal, rock music, rock music news, speed metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , on February 6, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

YNGWIE MALMSTEEN – Back in November of 1991, The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection was released on Polydor Records. This Yngwie Malmsteen compilation spans the first six albums of his career, from 1984 to 1990. These albums are: Rising Force (1984), Marching Out (1985), Trilogy (1986), Odyssey (1988), Trial By Fire: Live In Leningrad (1989) and Eclipse (1990).

Of these first six Yngwie Malmsteen albums, the only one I have on CD is Odyssey. Eclipse I have on cassette and the other four I have on vinyl. Sounds crazy, huh? The $ factor comes into play, whenever the desire to upgrade my entire collection of music to CD crosses my Metal mind. Regardless, I have these Yngwie albums on old school formats and I’m content. About seven years ago, on a lazy Saturday, I took a leisurely stroll into Strawberries Records & Tapes, back in my hometown up in very expensive Connecticut. That day I zeroed in on The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection… it was calling my name.

At this time of my life, seven years ago, my wife and I were really cutting corners and trying to make ends meet… and the ends were not interested in meeting either. Purchasing one CD would send me into guilt city. I took the Metal plunge, held my breath and Metal be thy name I purchased this Yngwie Malmsteen bonanza of songs. It has served me right ever since. Yes, by now you might have guessed I am giddy about listening to Yngwie Malmsteen over the years. I really enjoy listening to his guitar playing, his Neoclassical style is pioneering and legendary, in my Metal opinion.

I’ve always enjoyed listening to every vocalist that Yngwie Malmsteen has recruited for his albums as well. I’m not trying to sound like Mr. Sunshine wants everyone happy when I state this. No, I will readily admit that Mark Boals and Joe Lynn Turner are my favorite vocalists from the entire Yngwie Malmsteen catalog, which includes his most recent release of 2010’s Relentless, which boasts Tim “Ripper” Owens on vocals, (with Yngwie singing Look At You Now). If someone out there asks: hey Stone, c’mon, pick one or the other, Mark Boals or Joe Lynn Turner!? My Metal answer is easy: it’s a tie… Metal be thy name, a tie.

I recommend anyone who is just getting interested in Yngwie Malmsteen to get ahold of this CD. These fourteen songs are a magnificent representation of Yngwie’s first six albums. From the live cover of the Jimi Hendrix classic – Spanish Castle Magic, to Queen In Love, this compilation shows not a flaw, in my Metal opinion once again. Veteran fans of Yngwie who don’t own his first six albums on CD entirely, may want to grab this collection for the same reason I did.

Yngwie Malmsteen Facts To Know:

* Yngwie means: young Viking chief

* Born: In Sweden on June 30, 1963

* Yngwie Malmsteen taught himself how to play guitar.

* The late and legendary Jimi Hendrix inspired Yngwie to play guitar, only it was the image of Jimi Hendrix more so than his music that influenced Yngwie.

* At the age of 15, Yngwie quit school and landed a job at a music shop in Stockholm, Sweden, repairing guitars.

* The debut 1984 album Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force was nominated for a Grammy Award.

* (Source for these Yngwie facts found in the liner notes of this CD)

STRYPER “The Covering” – A Commanding Celebration of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal Classics

Posted in christian heavy metal, christian rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on February 4, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

STRYPER – Christian Heavy Metal and Hard Rock’s genre pioneer, influence, household name and undisputed legend of a band are back again. This time around, they are releasing an album of 12 covers songs with an additional original song. This original song is aptly titled: God. This substantial undertaking of covering such lifetime dependable classics is known as The Covering, to be released on Big 3 Records on February 15, 2011.

Stryper. The name alone resonates the positive energy and glorious power of their Christian belief and unity, not to mention they are one incredibly talented group of musicians. To understand and accept each respective Heavy Music genre is to be open minded to the bands that illuminate each genre, like a shooting star in the midnight sky. Stryper has been a shooting star for Christian Heavy Metal and Hard Rock since their 1984 debut The Yellow and Black Attack. Spanning four decades as a band of any genre is an admirable feat, while still being able to legitimize their sound and style through quality musicianship, after all these years, to multiple generations of fans, is undeniably respectable. For me, this is what Stryper has consistently accomplished to date.

There has been that moment when Stryper tried their hand at breaking away from their lyrical style and to a degree, musical style as well, with 1990’s Against The Law proving they were just as muscular and driven as a band than ever before. Stryper has branched out once again with The Covering, justifying they are not just an enormous Heavy Metal Band, they are colossal fans of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock’s roots. The Covering offers up the stylistic depth of Stryper, a Heavy Metal aptitude that they have bestowed upon songs that many of us old and new school Metalheads find uncompromisingly sacred.

From Iron Maiden to Kansas, with the Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath in-between, Stryper doesn’t need to wear their influences on their sleeves… they cover them with the upmost Heavy Metal reverence on The Covering. It is with much applause from this Classic Rock admirer, that a much prominent hit from the catalog of Sweet is exposed for it’s timeless Rockin’ sheen. Set Me Free is credibly set free with Stryper’s trademark Arena style vibe, acknowledging Sweet for their rightful place among Rock legends. Michael Sweet never wavers vocally throughout The Covering, he only makes each song rise with their power and energy that they originally were christened with by their creators.

As stated by me so often in the past, nothing beats the original. However, when done with acute and painstaking care, an album of cover songs can Rock my world and leave me appreciative and begging for more when done the Stryper way. How difficult can it be to cover a Scorpions song? Klaus Meine’s vocals alone are so unique and identifiable it’s simply scary. If it were up to me, I would never mess with trying to cover a Scorpions song… only Stryper did just that. On Blackout, I cannot control the enthusiastic feeling that devours my senses, as Michael Sweet belts out the lyrics to this classic Scorpions song. The only thing I can say about the cover of Highway Star is: holy Metal does Stryper embellish this song with impressive guitar driven prowess! And it’s built on speed!

Any tried and true Metalhead will come down with a serious case of ostrich bumps up and down their body, as the psych-you-out adrenaline bursts within like a volcano, each time they hear Heaven and Hell by the Ronnie James Dio fronted Black Sabbath. Stryper may never exceed those heavenly supercharges of Heavy Metal ecstasy that I feel from the original Heaven and Hell… only Stryper does come close. It may be that this song means so damn much, to so many of us, coupled with Stryper’s anointing Heaven and Hell with their approval of influence, that in turn triggers such an ignited feeling within my Metal soul. I’m certain the late Ronnie James Dio is smiling down, from above.

Over The Mountain is yet another super Heavy Metal classic from a legend of legends… Ozzy Osbourne. No, Oz Fox nor Michael Sweet are going to out-do the late Randy Rhoads on guitar, nor will Michael Sweet become an instant sound alike to Ozzy either. The Metal point is, this is Stryper simply covering a song with a sincerity that heavily seeps through their music in an uncanny way, which at the end of the Metal day cannot be ignored or denied. When I can catch myself singing along to these covered classics from Heavy Metal’s storied past, the realization sets in that Stryper has done good. Damn good too.

Carry On Wayward Son from an ultra-influential band like Kansas is untouchable right? Well, Stryper touches it and fires up their version with the heightened emotion it was always meant to release. If there is one song on The Covering that doesn’t smack it down for me, it’s Stryper’s version of The Immigrant Song by the infinitely legendary Led Zeppelin. Yes, some classics are best left untouched and Led Zeppelin is a monumental band to cover, regardless of the song. It just comes across as Stryper not staying true to the original hardness of The Immigrant Song, any slight watering down of such a classic will stand out and scream at me in a millisecond. Where’s Great White when I need The Immigrant Song covered?

The lone original song on The Covering, as I mentioned earlier is God. Whoa, this song is super saturated with emotion and can easily be looked upon as one of the most inspiring songs Stryper has ever written and recorded. It’s ostrich bumps time folks… and God is a candidate for Michael Sweet’s finest vocal performance of his very own legendary career. I found myself playing this song the most since I’ve obtained The Covering from Best Metal Buddy and Metal Researcher… Scott Coverdale. Yes, Scott has given The Covering his highest of Metal praise and understandably so. Stone’s Message to Stryper: God is one “heck” of a song and The Covering is one hell of an album. Metal be thy name.

I’m pleased as a fan, that Styper has shown the world that they do have Hard Rock and Heavy Metal influences that are not of the flower garden variety. What else would any Stryper or Heavy Metal fan expect? Michael Sweet has his affiliation as a member of Boston and the Heavy Rock family tree does extend outside the lines of the Christian genre for Stryper. These guys are human, just like me and you, they are not martyrs sent to us from the Vatican. This is a band that has been influenced by some of the most iconic acts in the Heavy Rockin’ land and The Covering proves it. Stryper will always be a Christian Metal Band and I sincerely respect that. I also respect the fact that Stryper has taken this path down Hard Rock and Heavy Metal roots lane and covered some of the greatest songs of Rock Music’s history.

Some Rockin’ Albums To Get You Through An Ice Storm Warning!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, weather news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on February 2, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

Well, it’s coming… back for round II. On Tuesday, February 1st, round I came through Pennsylvania and it was enough to cause plenty of headaches and anxiety attacks. As it is, round I was just a teaser compared to the impending “round II”, which is supposed to be bigger, badder and more potent than ever. What is “it”? I can almost see the concerned look on your face, as you begin to mutter: what was round I and what could round II possibly be? What is Stone unravelling about now? An ice storm. Another F’n ice storm. Metal be thy name, ice storms are not fun. Ice storms for all intents and purposes are dangerous to life, liberty and the pursuit of Metal happiness.

I have my snow shovel, yet what can that actually do when it comes to ice? My nearly 4 foot long ice chopper will come in handy though. Rock salt… yup, I have about 15 pounds of it, only it’s not gonna be enough probably. Will we lose our power due to the ice storm’s brutality to tree limbs and power lines? Maybe. Losing power when the temperature outside is below freezing is not something I welcome with open Metal arms.

What can any one of us do when it comes to a raging ice storm? The damn ice storm warning put out by the National Weather Service says it all! With big jack-o-lantern grins on their faces, my late/great uncles (Uncle George and Willard) always used to say to me when I was a young lad: you can’t control or predict Mother Nature. They were not mistaken. All that the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England States can do now is wait. Wait. Wait for this ice storm to cometh… and…

LISTEN TO SOME ROCK ‘N’ ROLL & F’N METAL!

Below is a list of five albums that are somehow linked to that very cold three letter word… ICE. Be it the band name, song or album title, the reference to ice is there. WARNING: This list just might serve you right. Each album is recommended by Stone for your listening Rockin’ pleasure during – Ice Storm Round II of 2011.

Foreigner – debut/self titled (1977)

Their Classic Rock gem – Cold As Ice is as fitting as any song to listen to during Ice Storm Round II. If these lyrics to Cold As Ice speak to me correctly, this song has some pissed off attitude happening. That’s perfect! For I am pissed off at this ice storm. By the way, this Foreigner debut album is a Classic Rock masterpiece.

Yngwie Malmsteen – Fire & Ice (1992)

Göran Edman is the lead vocalist on Yngwie Malmsteen’s sixth studio album. I’ve always liked this Fire & Ice album and consider it to be one of those best kept secrets from the early 90’s. Can you keep a secret? I still have… Fire & Ice… in mint condition… on cassette. No, it’s not for sale.

AC/DC – BLACK ICE (2008)

If any band in this great land has the ability to cheer me up, especially during Ice Storm Round II of 2011, it’s gonna be AC/DC. This album’s title and it’s title track have those two words no driver wants to hear during these winter months – Black Ice.

Frozen Ghost – The Essentials (2005)

If you dig Night Ranger, Nelson and Survivor, then you just might dig Frozen Ghost. Their melodic and well crafted songs were tailor made for Rock accessibility. This Canadian AOR band released three studio albums from 1987 to 1992. Here’s a Rockin’ fun fact: Frozen Ghost spelled their band name as Frōzen Ghōst on their first and third album covers, (their second album from 1988, Nice Place To Visit, had the spelling Frozen Ghost). Frozen Ghost broke up in 1993 and their mainstream Rock still resonates relevancy to my ears.

ICED EARTH – ALIVE IN ATHENS (1999)

Since their 1990 debut and self-titled album, Iced Earth has been an American Heavy Metal Band that has never buckled down to music trends or watered down their music for any mainstream acceptance… thanks to the legendary Jon Schaffer (founding member/guitarist/songwriter). Matthew Barlow is the lead vocalist on this live gem from Iced Earth.

Alive In Athens bestows some solid production, capturing Iced Earth’s Heavy Metal energy as they play their classics to a fired up mass of fans in Athens, Greece. I can’t ever find myself keeping this CD out of arms reach. Plus, what other band has a name so fitting for an ice storm? On Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011, when I wake up from my Metal slumber… a visible Iced Earth will be awaiting me outside, courtesy of Mother Nature. My great uncles are smiling down on me now.

By now, many of you are asking: hey Stone, what about that album cover at the top of this post? Is that a cool album to listen to during Ice Storm Round II of 2011? My answer is very simple. Yes, The Crucible Of Man: Something Wicked Part 2 is a Metal recommendation for any ice storm. It receives Stone’s Metal stamp of approval the whole year long too.

METAL BE THY NAME.

ICE STORMS SUCK.

ICE STORM WARNINGS ARE SPOOKY.

Legendary alternative Metal band HELMET will perform their 1992 platinum-selling release of Meantime in its entirety. The Interscope Records release gave the band mainstream attention with songs like “Unsung” and “In The Meantime”.  With the band’s renewed success after getting back together in 2004, this tour will be one of the most anticipated of 2011.

One of the most highly influential Doom Metal bands in America, SAINT VITUS are regarded as one of the first bands of the genre starting out as early as the 1970’s. The band featuring Scott “Wino” Weinrich, bassist Mark Adams, guitarist Dave Chandler and drummer Henry Vasquez have influenced so many bands in Doom and Metal . “Saint Vitus is more than ready to infect The Metalliance Tour! We’ve been wanting to do something like this for some time now…so prepare for destruction!!” says lead guitarist Dave Chandler. The band has done a handful of shows and some European Festivals but this will be their first full US tour in over a decade.

CROWBAR front man Kirk Windstein concludes, “Wow! This tour is gonna rule! I’ve loved Helmet since the beginning and loved St. Vitus even longer. With the new Crowbar record having hit the streets by then, look out! This bill will bring just what we need to crush each city with an avalanche of stylistic thunder!”
