BLOOD OF THE SUN – Signs With Listenable Records

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, Music, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 22, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Listenable Records is chuffed to announce the signing of 70’s-tinged U.S. Hard Rock band Blood Of The Sun. The band’s newest album. Burning on the Wings of Desire, is scheduled for a late-2012 release on Listenable Records. Get ready for a catchy overdose of vintage Hard Rock!

Blood Of The Sun was formed in 2002 by Henry Vasquez (Saint Vitus, Archie Bunker) on drums and Dave Gryder (Storm at Sunrise) on keyboards. Blood Of The Sun’s goal from the beginning has been to carry on the tradition of the Classic Rock style of the ’70’s, including highly respected seventies icons Derek St. Holmes from Ted Nugent and John ‘O Daniel and Rusty Burns from Point Blank.

In 2004, the band released their self-titled, first release on the independent brain ticket label. This initial line up included Las Crucis singer Mark Zamarron, Sub Oslo bassist Miguel Veliz, as well as Archie Bunker guitarists Jay Benfield and Rich Christopher.

For their 2007 sophomore release “In Blood We Rock”, personnel changes included Richard Hurley and Ty Thompkins on guitars and Henry Vasquez on vocals. In 2008, Death Ride was released with Derek St. Holmes from Ted Nugent on vocals as well as Erik Schmidt from REO Speed Dealer and Mike Doty from The House Harkonnen on guitars.

In addition to touring the states, the band toured Europe extensively in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and has subsequently been preparing their newest release “Burning on the Wings of Desire” which includes John O’Daniel and Rusty Burns from Point blank and Tony Reed (Stone Axe, Mos Generator).

NIGHT RANGER – That’s it at the top! That really cool (and authentic) autographed photo of Night Ranger came to me, courtesy of Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale. Back in 2010, he went to see Night Ranger perform at the Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Coverdale had a blast seeing Night Ranger live; he said they were pretty amazing that night. I believe him. I’ll also be thanking Coverdale for this really cool autographed photo, until I’m in my 90’s. Metal be thy name.

Night Ranger, from left to right in the above autographed photo: Christian Cullen, Kelly Keagy, Jack Blades, Joel Hoekstra and Brad Gillis.

Back on June 21st, 2011, Somewhere In California, the tenth studio album from Night Ranger was released via Frontiers Records. I can admit without hesitation, that this Night Ranger album is one of the best from their catalog; if not the very best. Somewhere In California is a Night Ranger album that pumps up my Rock ‘N Roll adrenaline; what more could I possibly ask for from any album that I listen to? Metal be thy name.

Prolific Progressive Rock Icon NEAL MORSE Moves Forward With a Blistering and Melodic New Release: “Momentum”

Posted in Guitar, guitarists, Hard Rock, Music, progressive rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 17, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Nashville, TN—Coming off of a highly successful 2011 marked by the release of the critically acclaimed “Testimony 2” and an enthusiastically attended tour throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe, Neal Morse could easily have justified going on a creative hiatus to catch his breath. But that would fly in the face of his convictions and the sense that he is being led to build upon the swell of success he is experiencing.

In January 2012, Morse was pondering the possibilities of a change in direction. After all, it had been a decade since he left the Progressive Rock stalwart Spock’s Beard to pursue a solo career that would allow him to write more freely about his personal faith. And in that time he had recorded 6 impressive studio records that were heralded for their unique hybrid of epic compositions that tested the boundaries of musicianship while maintaining a remarkable sense of melody through irresistible hooks and addictive choruses. He could have taken a break. Or gone in an entirely new direction. But he felt led otherwise, as summed up in the new record’s title track: “You’ve got some new momentum, you better keep going.”

Morse’s long time studio partner and friend Mike Portnoy had a small window in January 2012 when he could record. The only problem was, there was only one song and a few bits and pieces written. Taking a leap of faith, he scheduled a recording session with the drumming legend and longtime bass player Randy George in two weeks, hoping that the music would arrive before the musicians. And boy did it ever.

_____________________________

“Momentum” features five exceptional stand alone songs and one longer conceptual piece. In addition to the accessible title track, there’s the quirkily clever, Gentle Giant-inspired “Thoughts Part 5,” which follows in the footsteps of the previous “Thoughts” tracks penned by Morse with Spocks Beard. “Smoke and Mirrors” trods an introspective, acoustic path, while “Weathering Sky” offers a raucous cry for deliverance and renewal from a searching soul. Rounding out the shorter tracks is “Freak,” an upbeat, strings-charged song unlike anything Neal has recorded to date. Last comes “World Without End,” a near 34-minute, six-part epic that contains everything that defines Morse as a master of the genre.

Another highlight of this record is that, in addition to a masterful solo by guitar wizard Paul Gilbert, there are contributions from Adson Sodré, Bill Hubauer and Eric Gillette; three musicians who were selected as members of Morse’s new touring band through an exciting YouTube driven open audition process.

While “Momentum” propels Morse forward and further cements his standing as a prolific Progressive Rock icon, it steers clear of the potential “more of the same” trap, and features fresh musical angles and some of the finest performances to date by the Morse, Portnoy, George team.

The release of “Momentum” on September 11 will be quickly followed up by a North American tour that spotlights the fresh talent of his new live band, with stops in such cities as Nashville, Jacksonville, New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle and Mexico City.

Much to the delight of progressive Rock Fans around the globe, Neal Morse is moving ahead with “Momentum” and there doesn’t appear to be any kind of end to his unique creative talent in sight.

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE “Live At Berkeley” – Another Rock Music Treasure, From An Iconic Band And Historic Era Of Rock

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 16, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE – Released on July 10th, 2012, via Sony Legacy, Live At Berkeley is a Rock ‘N Roll gem to own. There’s never been a doubt in my Metal mind, that The Jimi Hendrix Experience were a trio of musicians that helped plant the seeds of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. I always ponder to myself, what would Jimi Hendrix think of today’s Heavy and Extreme Music? How would have Jimi’s guitar playing evolved if he had never passed away at such a young age of 27? I imagine I’m not alone with the wonder of it all. I bought this CD last week and I couldn’t be happier. Then again, if I scored a million dollar lottery ticket, I would be happier.

The production across the board on Live At Berkeley is sensational; the clarity of sound is undeniably first-rate. (The original location recordings were engineered by Abe Jacob). To have The Jimi Hendrix Experience captured live from this momentous evening of Rock history is Classic Rock personified. In my personal Metal opinion, there can never be enough live material of The Jimi Hendrix Experience; these Rock historic recordings recovered and released to the public are sonic journeys into a gilded past of music, in which I absorb like a sponge. There exists that select group of artists and bands that will always meet the demand for their (often times rare) unreleased studio and live music; The Jimi Hendrix Experience is a profound member of this select group.

______________________________

As with many live albums that have spanned the history of Rock Music, Live At Berkeley can also be considered a greatest hits. With such iconic Rock/Hard Rock songs such as Hey Joe, Purple Haze, Stone Free, Foxy Lady and Jimi’s adaptation of The Star Spangled Banner, Live At Berkeley showcases the songs that made both Jimi Hendrix and Heavy Rock escalate into the mainstream of popular music, during times of enormous social change. These are the songs that defined an era of Hard Rock, laying the field stone path for Hard Rock and Heavy Metal to follow.

Live At Berkeley was recorded on May 30th, 1970, (the 2nd show) at the Berkeley Community Theatre. On that storied night, Jimi Hendrix, along with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox (from Band Of Gypsys fame) on bass, most likely never knew of their eventual pop-culture and Rock historical impact they would have on multiple generations of musicians and fans. The Jimi Hendrix Experience left a Rock ‘N Roll impact that can never be duplicated ever again.

______________________________

Stones Note: The also legendary Noel Redding will always be included when I reference The Jimi Hendrix Experience; being the original bassist for this band, Noel was no longer a member when this Berkeley concert was recorded.

______________________________

The Jimi Hendrix Experience has left me awestruck with their pioneering contributions and immeasurable influence to Rock and Heavy Music. With all of its glorious genres that have spiraled from the bulging and glowing core of Heavy Music, I can thank The Jimi Hendrix Experience (and other select pioneering artists and bands) for all being the incubus that kick-started it all. The very least I can do now, is write about legends the likes of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and celebrate the release of their live music from the past. The Jimi Hendrix Experience… never to be forgotten and never to be replaced. Metal be thy name.

Abyss Records To Unleash Rocking Corpses Debut “Rock N’ Rott” On Friday, July 13th

________________________________

Horror Death Rock from the necropolis called Finland. Raise the Hell!

Rocking Corpses was conceived in the end of 2007 after Tony realized what kind of music he really wanted to do. Being a big fan of bluesy rock, death metal and horror, Rocking Corpses was going to be a mixture of all that he loved in music and movies. Some months later Laze got interested about the idea and joined forces with Tony. In 2009 two demo songs were recorded and in 2010 they decided to record a whole 10 piece story about the apocalypse as seen through the eyes of a zombie.

Rock ‘n’ Rott is not only the genre of Rocking Corpses, but also the title of the first album that depicts what happens in the mind of a zombie. The story is full of black humor and gore, but also many references to real life. The music is a mixture of many Rock and Metal elements with low growling verses and melodic and very catchy choruses. There is not so much distortion in the guitars and the beats have more Rock than Death Metal influences, so the combination is very unique and appealing to many different tastes.

Tony D.K. – Vocals & Guitar

Leper Laze – Vocals & Bass

Friend Slash Lover – Offers More Emotion, Reality with “The Grey Area” EP

Posted in indie rock, Rock, rock albums, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Indie Rock Band Delivers On Sophomore EP

Los Angeles, CA – Indie rock group Friend Slash Lover (FSL) give the world their artistic view in musical form with their second EP, The Grey Area. The EP is available to fans on iTunes and the band’s official website. The Los Angeles based band is heating up the music scene with captivating conceptual material for true radio heads everywhere.

Front man Josh Mintz, vocalist and songwriter, started out making music as a solo act under the name Stupid Human after teaching himself how to sing, write and play guitar. The former student of Rhode Island School of Design was musically inclined from the early age of 8, winning over 70 awards during his seven-year stint playing the fife in a drum corps marching band. Bassist Frank Day was with Mintz from the beginnings of FSL and since then, the band has added Jake Hayden, drums, and Greg Pajer, guitar, to the lineup.

With a complete band and the full collective sound Mintz always desired, Friend Slash Lover is about to embark on their most ambitious project yet. The seasoned performers have already hit some of the most popular nightclubs and music venues in Los Angeles such as The Roxy Theater, The Viper Room, Bootleg Theatre and Skinny’s Lounge.

Excited to deliver a second dose of musical remedy to fans, Friend Slash Lover called upon old friend Thom Flowers, who mixed the group’s debut EP As American As Ones And Zeros, to mix and produce The Grey Area. The EP was mastered by Roger Seibel at SAE Mastering and recorded at both Dave’s Room and Orangewhip Studios. The new six-song compilation is much more musically developed and the growth of the band is clear from the thought-provoking lyrics to the instrumental fluidity. On the title track “The Grey Area”, Mintz showcases his wide-range vocal chops as the song builds to an epic climax. The EP also features a cover of the 1987 hit “Dear God” by major alternative rock band XTC. The song was at the heart of controversy after its release due to the atheistic lyrics. The lead single “As Seen On TV” features a head-knocking punk rock sound combined with Mintz’s signature smooth vocals and an infectious hook.

Every song boasts each band member’s talent and carries its own individual character and message. Ultimately, The Grey Area is a modern sonic marvel waiting to be uncovered.

Boasting a more emotional appeal with an ethereal feel, the lyrics on this record reflect the band’s creative ability to convey real life experiences. Music fans looking to break away from the usual head-banging heavy metal or cookie-cutter pop tunes might be in for a treat with The Grey Area.

Some Metal and Rock ‘N Roll Thoughts – Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Posted in Death Metal, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, people, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 11, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

On a recent trip to f.y.e., I was accompanied by Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale and he discovered this unreal and not readily easy-to-find Sepultura EP (pictured above). Tribus – Australian Special Tour Edition was released back in 1999, via Roadrunner Records. This primo Sepultura find was in a large bin of unused CD’s that were drastically reduced in price. I paid 50 cents for it. 50 cents!! Ring that bargain Metal bell and whoa. There’s more to come in this post, about this f.y.e. trip…

______________________________

I am currently in the preliminary stages of relocating with my family. Where to? Hint: the Pretenders had a hit single about this state (My City Was Gone) and it can be found on this album:

Pretenders – Learning To Crawl

Released: (1983 U.K.) (1984 U.S.) on Sire

______________________________

Just when you think you’ve seen everything, well, think again. I guess we all get stunned every once in-awhile. Now… take a look at this… if you dare:

Yup. An ABBA tribute band. They’re called ARRIVAL. They’re also dubbed “The worlds greatest ABBA tribute band” too. The scary thing about all of this; is the clear fact that people are paying to see them perform. Metal be thy name and may the Metal Gods save my Metal soul.

______________________________

My apologies for showing the above, my Metal brethren. At least now, you know stuff like this actually exists. To remedy any aftershock from what you’ve just read and saw, stare at the album cover below:

NILE – At The Gate Of Sethu (Nuclear Blast)

Yes, by staring at the cover art for At The Gate Of Sethu, it will rid you of any possible ABBA cover band nightmares. This new NILE album is incredible. What else can be expected from NILE? Buy it. Play it. Play it often. Play it F’n loud. NILE F’N RULES. I couldn’t be more Metal precise than that.

_________________________

As mentioned at the beginning of this post, Best Metal Buddy Scott Coverdale and I had a Metal reunion! The last time I saw him was on our trip to the 2010 M3 Rock Festival down in Columbia, Maryland. The family and I took a trip up to Connecticut from Pennsylvania this past weekend and putting aside a few hours to hang out with Coverdale was Metal mandatory. Coverdale just returned from a 3 week trip to Lebanon and London. We only had a short window of time to see each other; so here is where we went:

Yes, Scott Coverdale and I found out that the Metal was aplenty at the f.y.e. in Torrington, Connecticut (both used and new CD’s). Believe it or not, we spent just under 2 hours there! We had to make comments about every damn CD we picked up; yelling across the aisles whatever we had to say, we were like 2 old ladies at a bingo hall! Coverdale and I both spent (about) $40 each; with used CD’s being the rule. As Coverdale always says: “you get more Metal bang for your buck, when you buy used CD’s”. I honestly can’t argue with him there.

Hey. Speaking of “bingo hall”… can you keep a secret? Stone used to oversee the entire operation of a parochial school bingo. It was a huge weekly event; one which raised a handsome amount of money for the school. Metal be thy name.

Alright. Enough about F’n bingo. Coverdale and I then left the f.y.e. store and drove our cars 50 feet to:

Ninety Nine. It’s a restaurant. It’s a bar. It has a family atmosphere too. Burgers, fries, chicken, salads, etc. are served up there. I’ve always liked the food and service at Ninety Nine. Coverdale and I opted to sit at the bar and take in on the big screen: the warriors from the Bronx, a.k.a. New York Yankees pounding on the hapless Boston Red Sox. What did we eat you’re wondering? We shared a huge plate of hot wings. What did we drink it all down with? Cold beer.

I’m a devout Yankees fan and Coverdale is, well, a Red Sox fan. Our baseball rivalry has always made for memorable debates! Once we both knew it was time to say goodbye, it kind of sucked. Our schedules and distance keeps us apart, still, we are… Best Metal Buddies to the end! Metal be thy name.

Wanna See My AC/DC Dodge Ram Toy Truck Collectible? It’s Really Cool…

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

AC/DC – That’s it at the top! That’s my AC/DC Dodge Ram Toy Truck Collectible and it’s really cool. I suppose you can consider this an AC/DC collectible that is affordable, versus owning an autographed guitar from Angus Young. As you can see, I’ve kept it sealed and mint-in-package. I really don’t know what it’s worth; I collect this stuff for enjoyment only.

This AC/DC truck collectible is 1:64 scale and is suggested for ages 8+. I guess I’m just about old enough to own it. The sticker on the side of the truck is the album cover for Fly On The Wall; which was released back in 1985 on Atlantic Records. I’ve always dug that AC/DC album and Sink The Pink is my favorite song from it. Danger comes in at a very close second for me; that song chugs along like a welcomed earth tremor. I do have Fly On The Wall on CD and it’s a digipak with fabulous liner notes. Yes, I once owned it on vinyl…

In case you’re unfamiliar with this AC/DC album, here is what the full album cover for Fly On The Wall looks like:

I always and forever will appreciate that psychotic looking fly. Unreal.

Muscle Machines is the trademark on the packaging of this truck (and) is the registered trademark of Funline Merchandise Co., Incorporated. The date printed on the back packaging is 2005. I remember buying this AC/DC goody sometime around 2006. Guess where I bought it? Super Walmart, where else? There were other AC/DC album versions of this truck for sale at the same time as well; with High Voltage (1976) coming to mind.

FORBIDDEN – Forced To Cancel Wacken Open Air Performance

Posted in Heavy Metal, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , on July 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Bay area Thrash legends FORBIDDEN sadly have to cancel their performance at this year’s Wacken Open Air Festival. Long time bass player Matt Camacho has left the band and vocalist Russ Anderson decided to take a break from music business, forcing FORBIDDEN to cancel the appearance.

Here is the official statement of the band:

“I am extremely saddened to have to announce that our bassist and brother since 1986, Matt Camacho, has decided to retire from the music business and leave FORBIDDEN permanently. For those that know and love Matt, this may be a shock to you. Matt’s always been gung-ho for the band since the beginning and was a positive guy. But ever since he went to law school after FORBIDDEN split up the first time, he was on a career path that would eventually take him to this day. His job position keeps getting better and taking care of our families is the most important thing.”

Matt had this to say about his experience of being in FORBIDDEN:

“Playing in FORBIDDEN has been a dream come true for me. It has allowed me to tour the world, play with and meet some of the most amazing bands, make friends for life, perform some phenomenal shows, and, most important, experience the most amazing FANS…I’ll truly miss the inspiration and love that people from around the world have shown towards the MUSIC. As I leave for a new endeavor, I want to express my thanks and gratitude for all the incredible musicians both past and present who have graced their magical touch on FORBIDDEN’s music. To be a part of this band and to have these guys as friends and family for life is a true blessing. Thanks guys for the support and I look forward to seeing FORBIDDEN carry on for years to come.”

Commented guitarist Craig Locicero:

“With that being said, Russ Anderson has made the decision to take a break away from music to get his bearings back and rekindle his fire for FORBIDDEN. Russ is not quitting, but has decided that he needs to do this for himself. We support him and his decision to not fake his way through what needs to be real. I had always said since we reformed in 2008, that as soon as things become tedious or a grind we’d either stop doing this or take a break. But we’d never say never again! FORBIDDEN is not through yet. Russ simply needs to recharge his Thrash Metal batteries!

So then there is the unfortunate reality that under these circumstances FORBIDDEN will not be appearing at WOA this year. This breaks my heart as much as anything else! Steve, Sasha and myself were very much looking forward to playing in front of that crowd and we had been holding out hope for Russ to change his mind. But he feels strongly that he just can’t do it right now. So we must respect his wishes and let him have his space.

We’d like to apologize to our fans, Continental Concerts, the WOA organizers and everyone at Nuclear Blast Europe. You’ve all stood by us for so long and we understand how bad the fans in Europe want to see FORBIDDEN again. But you deserve to see FORBIDDEN at it’s best. Not under these circumstances. This is our promise to you, we’ll come back with stronger and with new material! We’ve already got half of the new record written and we’ll finish it up when Russ feels good enough to Thrash it up again! Thanks to you all from the bottom of our hearts.”

Wanna See My Vintage Metal Blade Records Button? It’s Really Cool…

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 8, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

METAL BLADE RECORDS – That’s my vintage Metal Blade Records button right above! You can’t beat that vintage logo, with the blood dripping! Whoa. I’m honestly amazed that this button is still in my possession after all these years! Back around 1983/84 is when I obtained this button too. Here’s the Metal story:

I vividly remember ordering (via mail-order) from Metal Blade Records the debut full-length, Show No Mercy, from the legendary Slayer. I also ordered the debut full-length, Be My Slave from Bitch. This Metal Blade Records button came inside the package with the two albums. Strange as it sounds, both of these vintage vinyls are no longer in my Metal collection; yet this button is! Don’t worry… I do have Slayer’s Show No Mercy on both cassette and CD still. Hell, yes I do! I never replaced that Bitch album though.

This is what the Metal Blade Records logo looks like in 2012.

I kinda chuckle now, at how stuff was ordered back in the “old days” and I shudder at the thought. Back in those early 80’s there was no internet. There was no QVC. It was “snail mail” or bust, baby! I remember requesting a Metal Blade Records flyer via “snail mail” and weeks later it arrived. That’s how it was done. Patience was a virtue for us pre-internet Metalheads and/or Rockaholics. Hell, yes it was!

I guess I’ll continue to keep this cool button and sell it down the Metal road for a ton of money. Just kidding about the ton of money part. Wait a Metal minute. No I’m not. Metal be thy name.

Metal Blade Records was founded by Brian Slagel, back in 1982.

Metal Odyssey Presents: Ten Metal Albums You NEED For This Summer Of 2012! (Part Three)

Posted in alternative metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal with tags , , , , , on July 6, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Here is Part Three of Metal Odyssey Presents: Ten Metal Albums You NEED For This Summer Of 2012! Each Metal album below I’ve reviewed; just click the large link below each respective Metal album to read all about it! Each Metal album on this list I’ve obviously enjoyed and continue to listen to. My Metal goal is to pass this valuable Metal information onto my fellow Metal brethren.

As the halfway point of 2012 nears, these are ten recently released Metal albums that have left their scorching mark upon my Metal lovin’ eardrums. Wether it’s an EP or full-length, I look upon any release as an album.

There are very cool links at the bottom of this post, which will direct you to Parts One and Two of this series of 2012 Metal albums you NEED. Agree or disagree with this list, please feel free to comment. Metal be thy name.

ALARIC / ATRIARCH – Split LP

These are two underground bands that you NEED to know about. After you listen to this Split LP from ALARIC / ATRIARCH, you will once again be reminded that underground heavy music rules.

ALARIC / ATRIARCH Split LP – A Double Dose Of Spine-Chilling Heaviness You Can’t Overlook

IRON MAIDEN – EN VIVO!

I absolutely cannot imagine any Iron Maiden fan without EN VIVO! in their collection. For that matter, I couldn’t vision any Metal fan not wanting to check out this live 2-CD set of both vintage and current (The Final Frontier) songs. Metal as my witness, EN VIVO! is one of the best live Metal albums I’ve listened to in years.

IRON MAIDEN – EN VIVO! Is Stone’s Metal Pick Of The Day

IMPENDING DOOM – BAPTIZED IN FILTH

These Christian heavy-hitters are Extreme; plus they are very capable at scorching the hell out of your eardrums.

IMPENDING DOOM – ‘Baptized In Filth’ Is A Heightened Listen Into Some Absolute Extreme Metal

METALLICA – BEYOND MAGNETIC EP

Metallica is either teasing the living shit out of us with this return to old school, raw and stripped down sound; or they actually did realize that their output the last couple of decades has been lame to average and this is a taste of what’s yet to come. I do revere Metallica though… no matter how many smelly records they’ve released. I guess you can blame my reverence for ’em on that F’n fabulous 80’s decade.

METALLICA ‘Beyond Magnetic’ – Thrashing Raw, Rough & Tough, As This Legendary Band Was Supposed To Be In The First Place

SOULFLY – ENSLAVED

As I wandered about the northern terrain of Pennsylvania this past Spring, an eccentric 200-year-old troll crossed my path. I was startled. He wasn’t startled. All I can recount, is this messed up troll exclaimed to my face: “you b-b-best have g-g-gotten that new SOULFLY album, Stone… otherwise you’re an F’n poser!” Needless to say, I did get the new SOULFLY and that crazed troll can kiss my Metal lovin’ ass.

SOULFLY ‘ENSLAVED’ – Soulfly Has Raised Their Own Bar Of Metal Excellence

DRAGONFORCE – THE POWER WITHIN

Dragonforce is back! Plus, their new vocalist Marc Hudson is an UNREAL listen! Whoa! I became an instant fan of Marc Hudson 30 seconds after I heard him sing the first time. Yes, he’s that good. Oh… the rest of the band does kick superior Metal ass on The Power Within.

DRAGONFORCE “The Power Within” – Rises To New Melodic Power Metal Heights; Features New Vocalist Marc Hudson

SANGUINE – DEBUT/ST

Sanguine is an Alternative Metal band that MUST be signed by a record label that gives a crap about quality songs. Tarin Kerrey and guitarist Nick Magee deliver some impressive vocals. This entire debut album delivers intense promise for this blue-collar band.

SANGUINE – Debut / ST: Alternative Metal That Leaps Over Cutting Edge

UFOMAMMUT – ORO: OPUS PRIMUM’

This is Metal that feeds the Metal senses with all of its exquisite Metal nutrients. A Deep album and… aw, hell, UFOMAMMUT just blows my F’n mind.

UFOMAMMUT ‘Oro: Opus Primum’ – A Multi-Sound, Metal Mind Quest

REZISTOR – BEWARE THE SILENT

REZISTOR are our Thrash ambassadors from Romania and are just one (gulp) fun band to listen to. Old school is the rule with REZISTOR, while they still maintain a relevant Thrashing pulse.

REZISTOR ‘Beware The Silent’ – FREE Album Download From Romanian Thrash Metal Battalion!

THE BLAME – BORN

THE BLAME are from Turkey and they play some very memorable Metal that comes across so refined. Don’t blame me if you don’t get  into THE BLAME when I told you to.

FOOLS FOR ROWAN – Debuts Second EP “Who Killed Amanda Day?”

Posted in Hard Rock, modern rock, Music, rock albums, rock bands, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , on July 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Nashville-Based Rock Band Release EP and Video Following Kickstarter Success

Los Angeles, CA – Electrifying Rock band Fools For Rowan is back to hit fans with a second EP, Who Killed Amanda Day? debuting on iTunes on July 3rd and accompanied by a video for the lead single “Killed a Man Today.” The group has been touring nationwide while performing hits from their first release, Twisted. Tied Up. Tangled. and growing their loyal fan base. With an unquestionable fierce stage presence and musicality nothing short of top-notch, Fools For Rowan is vying to knock fans’ socks off with their most honest project to date.

Based in Nashville, Fools For Rowan is fronted by vocal powerhouse Erin Mullins with Jordan Cullen on drums, Andrew “Gib” Williams on bass, Ryan Nanney on rhythm guitar and Rachel Brandsness on lead guitar. Having played together for over three years, the fivesome’s high-caliber live performances have landed them gigs with industry heavy-hitters Evanescence, Halestorm, Trapt and Sick Puppies, among others.

The band’s first single “Burnt Around the Edges” received acclaim from college radio in the US and Canada, while the follow-up single “Dead” received spins on Top 40, college and modern rock radio and the video was featured on Fuse TV’s On-Demand. On the heels of a Kickstarter campaign where the band’s fans pledged to donate money towards the completion of Who Killed Amanda Day?, Fools For Rowan is ready to premiere the baby that fans personally helped conceive. “I think it’s just another cool way to get the fans even more involved in the music!” said Erin of the campaign.

Kicking down the doors of adversity, FFR has come back with a six-song compilation packed with authentic lyrics, powerful vocals and high-strung beats that stay true to Rock genres of the past and present. Who Killed Amanda Day?, a clever play on the title of the lead single, was produced by hit-makers and co-writers Shaye Smith (Jewel, Faith Hill, Kenny Chesney) and Ken Harrell (Stacie Orrico, Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers) and mixed by Beau Hill (Grammy winner – Ratt, Winger) and Rory Rositas. “Killed A Man Today,” a passionate story about breaking a lover’s heart and figuratively “killing” them, features enticing guitar riffs and infectious drums that dominate the track. According to Erin, the EP is “a great blend of soft Rock, Pop Rock, Hard Rock with real lyrics… it’s just fun, emotional, and real.”

Resembling an epic drama flick, the video for “Killed a Man Today” shows a young woman breaking up with her man via a hand-written note and ironically dies shortly after in a car crash. The video is currently playing on the band’s Youtube channel. With such a compelling track list and captivating video, “Fools For Fools” will be racing to the stands for another dose.

FOREIGNER “Alive & Rockin” – Proof Positive That FOREIGNER Still Connects Their Illustrious Past To The Present

Posted in classic rock, Hard Rock, hard rock bands, melodic rock, Music, rock concerts, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on July 3, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

FOREIGNER – I imagine that the past accomplishments of Foreigner can undoubtedly be looked upon as legendary; while the present-day Foreigner lineup can be upheld as superheroes protecting, celebrating and building upon an enviable Rock ‘N Roll legacy. For a Rock/Hard Rock band that should be enshrined in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, only to be ignored by the political party that oversees it, Foreigner justifiably has the world-wide popular vote among generations of fans that know ultra quality when they hear and see it.

Alive & Kickin’ is proof positive that Foreigner still connects their illustrious past to the present. A live recording from their 2006 performance at the Bang Your Head!!! Festival in Balingen, Germany; Foreigner is a band continuously touring to this very day and bringing to life a catalog of songs from albums that have sold over 70 million world-wide.

Any “famous” band in the land (switching around vocalists) can learn a valuable lesson from Foreigner: make absolutely certain your new lead singer can relate the true emotion of the song; while capturing the essence of what it means to vocally represent such band’s storied history of music. With Hurricane as his credible launching pad, lead vocalist Kelly Hansen has earned his Rock ‘N Roll doctorate with Foreigner, by excelling at following Lou Gramm so effortlessly well.

As my ears dictate, Foreigner hasn’t succumbed to being a stale semblance of what once was. Still recording and touring to sell-out crowds, spanning five decades, equates that Rock ‘N Roll magic is consistently being captured by this band. Alive & Rockin’ projects the sounds and vibes of a profoundly memorable Classic Rock era, celebrating both Foreigner’s hit songs and their legendary past; bringing me back to those starry-eyed days of my teen-hood, while erasing the momentary stress I encounter on the present day.

If there ever was a power-house quinary of albums in the history of Rock, that can be used as the measuring stick to both Rock and Hard Rock mainstream success, then Foreigner’s 1977 self-titled debut, 1978’s Double Vision, 1979’s Head Games, 1981’s 4 and 1984’s Agent Provocateur are to be celebrated as such.

This is a quality performance that was recorded on Alive  & Rockin’, with my lone gripe of wanting to hear Kelly Hansen chat-it-up more with the thousands of fans in attendance. (I’ve always been a sucker for that lead singer-to-crowd interaction). Alive & Rockin’ was released this past May 29th, via Eagle Rock Entertainment. I couldn’t argue with any better time for this live album release, especially since Summer is here and the urge to play Classic Rock on high volume with the car windows down is epidemic.

Mick Jones should feel very proud of his success at keeping this (his) Rockin’ Foreigner ship sailing. I strongly recommend Alive & Rockin’ to any and all Classic Rock, Rock and Hard Rock fans. Only the strong, talented and wise survive, yet in Rock music you must add adaptable to the mix… and Foreigner bestows these attributes while carrying the torch of relevance high in the air. I won’t stamp this as an all-time great live album in Rock history; still it’s Foreigner at their live Rockin’ best and I couldn’t ask for more than that. Alive & Rockin’ is sound proof of my Rockin’ beliefs I’ve just written. Metal be thy name.
