UFOMAMMUT ‘Oro: Opus Primum’ – A Multi-Sound, Metal Mind Quest

Posted in doom metal, drone metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, progressive metal, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on March 12, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

UFOMAMMUT – Oro is the title for UFOMAMMUT’s latest work and encompasses ten (tracks) movements overall. To be released separately as two albums, the first is Oro: Opus Primum, which will be released April 17th, 2012, via Neurot Recordings. The second chapter of OroOpus Alter, will be released in September of 2012. This album’s press release states Both Oro chapters are to be interpreted as a “single track” (to make a long story short) due to the way in which the music was written and flows.

For anyone unfamiliar with UFOMAMMUT, this band can get quite deep with their album concepts. I will use this album’s press release quote to sum up what Oro is conveying conceptually. Believe me, I would never be aware of this album’s concept from just listening to the music itself. Who could? Here it is:

“As with all previous UFOMAMMUT albums, the concepts behind Oro are expansive and multi-faceted, mutating the Italian palindrome which translates to “gold” with the Latin translation of “I prey.” Oro explores the concept of knowledge and its power; the magical stream controlled by the human mind to gain control of every single particle of the World surrounding us. Oro is the alchemical process to transform the human fears into pure essence; into Gold”.

Here is my honest interpretation of Oro: Opus Primum, based on the music, Metal and sounds I’ve taken in. Please note, all five (songs) movements are instrumentals:

___________________________________

EMPIREUM opens Oro: Opus Primum and swirls its ambient vibrations of spacey progressiveness throughout my thoughts. It’s Pink Floyd meets a psychotic thriller soundtrack. While building up its thick temp, the Doom atmosphere picks up mid-way through EMPIREUM, without losing grip on its creepy sound scape. I can get really, really lost in this opening track and love every second of it. At nearly 14 minutes long, EMPIREUM ends with a subdued atmosphere of sound, bringing about a melancholy affect upon me which I easily embrace.

___________________________________

AUREUM – Opens with a more crunchy guitar sound and the Metal has arrived. The drum beats and bass lines are heavier and very distinct. With a copious backdrop of synthetic sounds, AUREUM flows along like strong river rapids, only these rapids are controlled with musical precision. The overall Metal wall of sound is worthy to bang your head to while throwing down some cold brews in the process. At 12:28 long, could this be Psychedelic Metal at it’s finest? It surely can be interpreted that way by me.

___________________________________

INFEARNATURAL – Begins with an epic-like feel with its off in the distance chorus. There is plenty of Metal stomp, with chunky Doom laden guitar that never ceases throughout. Synth layers are aplenty, with more unique sounds than my ears can grasp, even after multiple listen-throughs. There are remote-like spoken words that are both audible and inaudible. Overall, this is a multi-layered movement that I found captivating and its strong Metal personality wins the day. At 7:26 this is the shortest movement on this album.

___________________________________

MAGICKON – This is by far the “foreboding entry” amongst these five movements I’ve listened to on Oro: Opus Primum. I just get that overall dark and cavernous vibe from MAGICKON. Doom, Doom, Doom and Doom again. MAGICKON just throws that Doom hammer down and covers me over in its heavy Doom blanket of sound. MAGICKON plays out at 7:57 long.

___________________________________

MINDOMINE – The tempo and repetitions of MINDOMINE could be considered by some as Drone Metal. With Doom riffs and distant screams ever the continuum, this movement can produce some chills. It’s a fine-line trying to consider some of these distant screams as being nearly “tribal-like” chants. An eerie ending to this first chapter of Oro is MINDOMINE. Picture yourself floating in outer-space (thanks to the synths) while the skull melting sounds of Drone and Doom Metal encircle your senses. Clocking in at 9:18, that’s MINDOMINE.

___________________________________

Musically complex, while consistently maintaining a Metal feel and vibe throughout its totality of sound, Oro: Opus Primum has allowed me to open my own mind to its world of unique sounds. Richly textured and layered, there is no doubt, that with each synth sound, drum beat or note, it all opens the doors to a vast wealth of other audible vibrations. Weaving itself through the Doom, Drone, Progressive, Psychedelic and Ambient Metal genres, Oro: Opus Primum is both a listening experience and Metal mind quest.

UFOMAMMUT:

Poia – guitars and effect

Urlo – bass, vocals and synths

Vita – drums

Ciccio – soundlord

Lu – visuals

FURYON – ‘Disappear Again’ (Official Video) – Debut Album ‘Gravitas’ Releases March 23rd, Via Frontiers Records

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, hard rock bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, heavy metal videos, melodic hard rock, melodic metal, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on March 10, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

FURYON – If you’re a fan of Hard Rock, Melodic Hard Rock and/or Melodic Heavy Metal, then do yourself a favor today and click on that FURYON video below. Disappear Again is sweltering with melodic guitars and vocals, along with more hooks than a fishing supply store on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. To say this song is an addictive listen (for me) is a gross understatement.

I wanted to hear an album or song this morning that would kickstart my Saturday into high Rockin’ gear, thus I turned to a band and album I’ve yet to check out until now. I am battling a stupid-ass cold and received a welcomed “lift” from a song that I wound up listening to at least 15 (or more) times while I slapped this post together. Disappear Again is that song. One damn vibrant rhythm section. Very cool guitar licks and the vocals of Matt Mitchell are stuff of 80’s Arena Rock jubilation.

The all-encompassing Melodic Hard Rockin’ vibe that FURYON delivers on this song has made my F’n day. Looks like FURYON has a nomination for Metal Odyssey’s Hard Rock song of 2012… signed, sealed and delivered. Metal be thy name.

The debut album from FURYON, Gravitas, will be released on March 23rd, 2012 in Europe and March 27th in North America. FURYON is signed to the ultra-Rockin’ Frontiers Records.

FURYON:

Matt Mitchell – Vocals

Chris Green – Guitars

Pat Heath – Guitars

Alex “Nickel” Bowen – Bass

Lee Farmery – Drums

Here’s the track listing for Gravitas:

Fear Alone

Wasted On You

KATANA – New Album ‘Storms Of War’ Coming Soon On Listenable Records

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news, traditional heavy metal with tags , , , , , on March 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

KATANA – Guitarist/songwriter Tobias Carlsson has issued an update about KATANA’s new album Storms of War to be released in May on Listenable records.

“It was once again recorded, mixed and mastered at Sonic Train Studios by King Diamond guitarist Andy La Rocque. We were very focused and determined right from the beginning to create a sound that no one had heard on an album since the 80s. To accomplish this, we and Andy listened a lot to albums produced by Martin Birch when mixing and setting the sound. Mostly Rainbow, Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath, Killers by Iron Maiden and Assault Attack by MSG. It became almost our motto in the studio to ask “How would Martin have done it?” whenever we had doubts about something. The songs are mostly completely new, mixed in with some very old ideas and stuff that weren’t finished in time for the last recording. ”

“The band has been around for nearly ten years now, and for the first album we had that long to write the material. This time, most of the songs were written and rehearsed over a period of a couple of months. This has been a challenge, but a positive one that has forced our song writing to its best, and beyond. We have broken new ground with this album and played around with things that we have never done before, thus widening the range of what we are capable of musically. But at the same time, we feel that we have come a long way in defining a unique style and sound for KATANA. I would say the album is as diverse as the first one musically, yet more uniform.”

” The Japanese influences are there, especially in the epic song about the great Mongolian emperor Kubilai Khan who twice tried to invade Japan, and failed miserably both times. It is a grand story of Japanese history and mythology. But we are not limited by the Japanese influences and there are songs on this album that explore both other mythological subjects as well as themes taken from popular culture and everyday life.”

Tobias confirmed that musically, a fan of early 80s Heavy Metal will feel at home in this album as much as the previous one, and the influences are still very much early Saxon, early Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Rainbow, Grim Reaper, Manowar and so on. But more than anything, this album represents 100% KATANA.

STORMS OF WAR ARE DRAWING SOON!!

KATANA

Patrik Essén – Guitars

Tobias Karlsson – Guitars

Johan Bernspång – Vocals

Susanna Salminen – Bass

Anders Persson – Drums

2011 was a busy year for Sweden-based Traditional Heavy Metallers KATANA. Since the release of their debut album “Heads Will Roll” last spring, KATANA not only found time to tour with both the likes of Where Angels Suffer, featuring Chris Holmes and Stet Howland (ex-W.A.S.P.) and American metal legends Lizzy Borden. They also entered the studio to record their second album, entitled Storms of War.

Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, KATANA has been around for several years and has already made a great name for themselves in the underground Metal scene of Sweden and Europe. In 2010, the band won the prestigious Wacken Metal Battle which earned them a slot at the Wacken Open Air, as well as the Sweden Rock Festival. Their debut album has been critically acclaimed all over the world, and Malcolm Dome of Classic Rock Magazine wrote: “This quintet will make a significant mark. This debut is only the beginning of what should be a thrilling march”.

With the new album, Storms of War, produced by King Diamond guitarist Andy La Rocque, KATANA means to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that Classic Heavy Metal in the veins of early Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Saxon is here to stay!

ZZ TOP – ‘A Tribute From Friends’ Cover Song Album: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, cover songs, Hard Rock, hard rock albums, rock albums, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , on March 9, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

ZZ TOP – Legends. Rock ‘N Roll Hall Of Famers. Mammoth Influence on all genres of Rock. Now then, when a cover song album of ZZ Top songs is released, these “covers” better be damn good. I can’t stand it when a band or musician just messes around with a Rock classic and “thinks” their famous name alone will give them a pass. Not here folks. I will present to you: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly when it comes to these ZZ Top cover songs I’ve been listening to on: A Tribute From Friends. Plus, I won’t be swayed by the fact that these are “friends” of ZZ TOP. Sometimes “friends” can ruin a classic song without even trying.

Let’s get right to it, shall we?

______________________________________

THE BAD:

The opening track is Sharp Dressed Man performed by The M.O.B. Who’s The M.O.B.? Mick Fleetwood, Steven Tyler and John McVie. At first, I found this song fun. Then, it irritated the living hell out of me. All I kept picturing was The M.O.B. performing this song at a senior citizen Summer picnic or some Sunday afternoon church fair, with all in attendance going crazy for it. When a cover song sounds “old” and trudging… that’s what happens to my imagination.

Somehow Wolfmother had Cheap Sunglasses thrown in their lap to cover. Not good. I dig the first two studio albums from Wolfmother, only I don’t grasp this cover of Cheap Sunglasses. Annoying. I’ll have to admit, this is the first time I’ve ever been not keen to Andrew Stockdale’s vocals. Another problem is, this cover song sounds way too much like… Wolfmother. A disinterested Wolfmother at that.

THE UGLY:

So sorry that a Rockaholic and Metalhead like myself had NO clue who Wyclef Jean is until now. Rough Boy sounds so over-covered here entirely. Come on now, a Hip Hop / R&B artist covering a ZZ Top song? That is not an entirely bad idea, as long as this song is on an album of covers from ALL artists of Wyclef Jean’s genre.

This song unfortunately doesn’t fit in with the “Rock” flow for me, on this album. To my ears, Rough Boy was as “commercial” as it could get for ZZ TOP back in 1986 and this cover only magnifies it’s “Pop” personality to an embarrassing level. If Wyclef Jean is a friend of ZZ Top’s, then ZZ TOP should have remembered: “friends don’t let friends cover their songs”.

THE GOOD:

Nickelback. Yes, Nickelback. This love ’em or hate ’em Hard Rockin’ band knocked it out of the Classic Rock park with their cover of Legs. This song does sound like Nickelback, yet they did not stray from the non-stop Rockin’ groove that this song originally was all about. Nickelback just gave it more heaviness.

Daughtry. Yes, Daughtry. This guy sings Waitin’ For The Bus / Jesus Left Chicago as if he really digs and feels the song thoroughly. I make NO apologies, Chris Daughtry sings this ZZ TOP classic straight from the heart. Hell, that’s how it comes across to me anyways. Plus, Daughtry didn’t screw around with this songs tempo or try to “reinvent the F’n wheel” with it.

Mastodon. These guys gave Just Got Paid their signature stamp of progressiveness without even trying. Turning Just Got Paid into a relevant Hard Rock song that smokes was obviously… the mission of Mastodon.

Filter covers Gimme All Your Lovin‘ with a grand Alternative meets Industrial sound that is admirable. It’s Filter. The legendary Billy F Gibbons lends his vocals and electric guitar to La Grange. Cool. The remaining tracks are fine listens, just watch out for the bad and the ugly. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

ZZ TOP – A Tribute From Friends was released back on October 11th, 2011, via Show Dog / Universal.

DORO’s mammoth 25 Years In Rock 2 DVD/CD set – which has immortalized her 2,500th live concert – was released last September.

DORO celebrated her 25th anniversary concert in 2008 at the ISS Dome in her hometown of Düsseldorf, Germany. With over 8,500 people in attendance, this magical performance featured her long-time band members Nick Douglas (bass), Joe Taylor (guitar), Johnny Dee (drums) and Oliver Palotai (keyboards, guitar).

Guest appearances were made by Overkill’s Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth, Grave Digger’s Chris Boltendahl, former Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen, Scorpions’ Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker, Liv Kristine (Leaves’ Eyes), Floor Jansen (After Forever), Axel Rudi Pell and many others. This once-on-a-lifetime concert set was captured in its entirety and includes outtakes from this very special career-affirming evening and is still available at the Nuclear Blast Webshop.

CANNIBAL CORPSE – Grace The Cover Of DECIBEL Magazine’s Zombie Issue

Posted in Death Metal, death metal bands, Extreme Metal, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on March 7, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

Death Metal monarchs CANNIBAL CORPSE grace the cover of the April 2012 edition of Decibel Magazine: The Zombie Issue! Their third time on the cover of one of Metal’s most extreme and revered publications finds bloodied growl-merchant George “Corpsgrinder” Fisher at war with the undead.

Inside, author Chris Dick unearths a thoroughly absorbing ‘CORPSE dissertation that includes collective discussions about the creation of their monolithic new album, Torture, the band’s earliest encounters with censorship, artistic expression, facts and figures on one of the genre’s highest selling bands to date and of course, the relevance of zombies in 2012.

The issue hits newsstands on Thursday, March 8.  To order your copy, go to THIS LOCATION.

Earlier this week, Decibel hosted the official premiere of “Encased In Concrete,” the fourth track off Torture. In case you missed it, you can still rupture your eardrums HERE.

Torture will be available to North American fans on March 13, 2012 via Metal Blade Records. For special Torture preorder packages, visit the band’s OFFICIAL LANDING PAGE.

IMPENDING DOOM – ‘Baptized In Filth’ Is A Heightened Listen Into Some Absolute Extreme Metal

Posted in christian heavy metal, deathcore, Extreme Metal, extreme metal bands, Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , on March 7, 2012 by Metal Odyssey

IMPENDING DOOM – Releasing on March 13th, 2012, via eOne Music is Baptized In Filth from Riverside California’s – Impending Doom. Extreme. Extreme Metal. You’re getting a magnitude of Extreme Metal with Impending Doom. This band is not sheepish on keeping the level of intensity atop a colossal barrage of blast beats, searing guitar leads, chunky riffs, quaking bass lines and wrathful vocals. Extreme. Metal.

Does Impending Doom stare down the ominous shadow of redundancy? Sure they do. Their convincing as hell when it comes to playing this fast and furious. I can feel this band’s unrestrained aggression come through quite loud and clear on Baptized In Filth, that is for sure. It takes commitment to write and play Metal this enraged. Hell yes it does. To sing as brutal as Brook Reeves does takes some Metal passion, I myself would begin to choke after singing this way for twenty seconds.

Steering away from labeling Impending Doom with “multiple genre” tags is useless. (Christian Metal and Deathcore can be thrown about). Extreme. Metal. That’s all my fellow Metal brethren need to know. This album accentuates a great deal of positives for this band, these guys have a keen sense for how an album should flow for these songs really do stack-up together fittingly. Their musicianship and obvious energy shows signs of greater things to come and yet Impending Doom have a damn fine album of songs here and now.

_______________________________

One thing Impending Doom should realize is “toning it down” as they did with My Light Unseen, makes sense and adds a stylistic quality about them other than full-throttle. I’d like to hear more of this side to Impending Doom in the future. This song is still hard and heavy, even with its tempo turned down a few notches. I really welcome this sound from Impending Doom, with both clean and Extreme vocals existing together.

Exploring dark themes lyrically and putting the anti-God doctrine on the witness stand, with an obvious unrelenting and aggressive musical identity, Impending Doom has created quite the heightened listen with Baptized In Filth. This being their fourth full-length, I will predict that Impending Doom will be around for many more albums to come. There’s a genuineness in this band’s collective sound that I can appreciate.

HIGH ON FIRE – Album title translation: “The Mysteries of the Worm”. Well, it isn’t a mystery to me that High On Fire is one hell of a Metal band. De Vermis Mysteriis is one album in 2012 that I’m looking forward to hearing, you can bet your last Metal dollar on that one. Apparently, this is a pretty deep concept album which involves time travel. You can read more about this album’s intriguing concept by visiting the High On Fire website: http://www.highonfire.net/

High On Fire are steadily cementing themselves within the legendary Metal halls of Metal history, in my Metal opinion. Matt Pike. ‘Nuff said. De Vermis Mysteriis will be released on April 3rd, 2012, via eOne Music.
