California Kult Black Metallers, VALDUR, will ravage unsuspecting ears at this year’s edition of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. The band was recently added to the July 10th show at the Shoreline Amphitheater in San Francisco, California where they will systematically level the Jagermeister Stage and all those in attendance. Said the band in a collective statement: “We will be more than pleased to take this opportunity to play our Extreme Metal to unsuspecting people who otherwise may not be familiar with the underground.  We got asked to play, we said yes, and we very much appreciate Jagemeister for the invite. Expect a brutalizing set.”

Check out video footage from the band’s performance at the Oakland Black/Death Fest in March HERE:

In related news, VALDUR will perform LIVE on KDVS’s popular Raise The Dead radio show on KDVS July 9 at 12:00am PST/3:00am EST at http://www.kdvs.org. You can also catch the archive at http://kdvs.org/show-info/.

VALDUR are currently working on the follow-up to 2010’s unsympathetic Raven God Amongst Us full-length . Said the band of the four new tracks completed: “They will beckon a new and more intense era musically for VALDUR.”

COLD – A Tour Of The American Dream: Live Photos and Overview From The Crocodile Rock Cafe, Allentown, Pennsylvania, March 19th, 2011

COLD – Back on March 19th, 2011, Alt/Modern Metal Legends COLD brought A Tour Of The American Dream to The Crocodile Rock Cafe in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Myself and Metal Odyssey’s staff photographer Tom Coderre were there to take in this night of Hard and Heavy hittin’ bliss, which featured four fabulous supporting bands that are on the rise: KOPEK, Oceans Divide and Egypt Central. Eastern Pennsylvania’s very own Maddam Ink. closed out the night after the headliners COLD.

COLD presented themselves onstage like the tried and true Rock legends they are, playing a tight set of songs that spanned their career. Wherever I turned, fans were in a psyched-out mode, realizing they were watching the continued comeback of a band that has been highly influential to a generation of Hard Rock, Modern Metal and Alternative Heavy Music bands. Speaking of which, the members of KOPEK and Oceans Divide spoke reverently of COLD. This all added further proof, that COLD has without question left its mark on Rock Music history and an impressionable influence on many young, current and successful bands.

With COLD, it is not the amount of albums that is important, it is the quality of these albums in their discography that impresses me. COLD has sold well over a million albums for good reason. Their music’s originality blended with plenty of heaviness and fortified with an alternative vibe, feel and personality, have all been key with their successful bridge to strengthening the Alternative and Modern Metal genres over their career. From their newest single Wicked World to The Day Seattle Died, COLD performed their songs at The Crocodile Rock Cafe with a conviction of a band that has been around the block and Rocked it to kingdom come as well… many times over.

For a band of any stature to take a short or long hiatus from the scene, then only come back to Rock out the brains of a throng of adoring fans says quite a lot. The age group of these fans at The Crocodile Rock to see COLD on this evening, in late March, told another astounding story, with young and middle-aged Heavy Music fans alike seeming to be there for one purpose: COLD solidarity. With their forthcoming studio album Superfiction (Eleven Seven Music) being released on July 19th, 2011, the feeling in the air is that COLD is no longer on a comeback… COLD is back.

All the live photos you see here were taken by Tom Coderre. I’ll speak for Tom… he was quite psyched-out to be documenting this live set from COLD with his camera lens, documenting A Tour Of The American Dream… a tour and band that shall forever be an important part of Rock Music history. I know I was psyched-out to be there.

ZZ TOP – Live From Texas: A Very Cool Listen From Three Rockin’ Legends!

ZZ TOPBilly Gibbons, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard. Three undisputed Rock and Roll legends. On this 2011 July 4th holiday weekend in America, kickin’ back to some live ZZ Top with some cold brews aplenty, well,  just seems like the right thing to do. I pulled Live From Texas out a couple of days ago and thought this album should be recommended for any fan of good times, old school, Classic Rock. Aw, hell, any fan of Rock Music just has to appreciate what ZZ Top has accomplished over their glorious Rockin’ career. From Southern Rock to Hard Rock, with the Blues in-between, ZZ Top is Rock and Roll whoop-ass, no matter how you slice it.

Released back in 2008, on Eagle Records, Live From Texas is not short on sound quality and production. This album obviously makes for a very cool greatest hits and live combination. Fans both old and new should get a kick out of hearing Pearl Necklace being introduced, showing that a little band rhetoric with the audience surely goes a long way. I dig every song I hear on Live From Texas, including Rough BoyMetal be thy name. Rough Boy seems to take an unfair hit every now and again and I’m tellin you now, this song is cool alone for just making the girls all mushy. Well, that’s how I observed it  “back in the day” with Rough Boy.

The live versions of Cheap Sunglasses and Just Got Paid flat out ROCK through my veins with Classic Rockin’ intoxication. Being able to see ZZ Top live during my lifetime is something I’ll always cherish and want to experience again one day soon. In the meantime, I’ll just reach for Live From Texas to get my dose of ZZ Top playing 16 songs live… with Texas and American pride!

* ZZ Top – Live From Texas was recorded on November 1st, 2007, at the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The Doors – Morrison Hotel: Revisiting a Rock Classic From 1970

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, classic rock bands, Hard Rock, metal odyssey, Music, psychedelic rock, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on June 30, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

THE DOORS – In these handful of days leading up to the 40th anniversary of Jim Morrison’s passing away, I’ve decided to share a few thoughts about an album from The Doors. Jim Morrison passed away on July 3rd, 1971, in Paris France. He was only 27 years old. Forever a Rock legend Jim Morrison shall be. Jim Morrison’s lyrics, vocals and poetry always fascinated me. I was lured as a young lad into the Rock world of The Doors and essentially have never looked back. By the way, I was only four years old when Morrison Hotel was released… Metal be thy name.

Each studio album from The Doors is a unique Rock Classic. There will never be another band that comes even remotely close to their sound or style, in my opinion. The album I’ve chosen to revisit from The Doors is Morrison Hotel, released back in 1970, on Elektra Records. As with all of The Doors albums, listening to Morrison Hotel on CD isn’t quite the same as hearing the old school analog quality of it’s vinyl predecessor. I guess the same can be said for countless albums, from an untold number of bands from yesteryear.

My two favorite songs heard on Morrison Hotel are: Roadhouse Blues and Peace Frog. I personally like all eleven songs on this album. I’m not ashamed to admit, (and it might sound crazy), yet I’ve never disliked any song from The Doors. This band was just that artistic and unique to me. Roadhouse Blues is just a sensational Blues Rock song, one that uncannily radiates an incredible amount of relevance in 2011. Seriously, (and this is my opinion), Roadhouse Blues rocks along like it was recorded yesterday.

Peace Frog is just a provocative listen into Jim Morrison’s thoughts, with the lyrical content really being a recounting of what personal events troubled him. Waiting For The Sun has always given off a sonically melancholic vibe to me. Regardless of the “sun” being a focal point in the lyrics, this song has it’s doom switch turned on that I can never get enough of. Land Ho! with all of it’s quirky song structure and Folk stylings dominating, still triumphantly rocks along. A knee tapper and cool drinking song is Land Ho!.

Like all of The Doors albums, there is so much more to the “hits”. Songs like Maggie M’Gill, You Make Me Real, Queen Of The Highway and Blue Sunday are gems of Rock Music history in their own right. I always felt the need to listen to the entire album to take in The Doors. The Doors music just gives off that feel, where listening to Morrison Hotel (or any album from The Doors) from beginning to end is an experience, rather than just a listen for me.

The album cover to Morrison Hotel says it all, with Jim Morrison being in the forefront and most prominent in the picture. The Morrison Hotel actually did exist in Los Angeles, with no ownership ties to Jim Morrison, of course. However, think about this… how many bands today could take the last name of their singer and attach it to “hotel” as an album title? Not many I would think. Daughtry Hotel? I don’t think Chris Daughtry would even care for it. Could Aerosmith ever pull off an album title of: Tyler Hotel? Nah.

The coolness and flamboyancy of Jim Morrison’s vocals were ahead of the times, couple that with his overall mystique and I see the realism behind the album title: Morrison Hotel. The album title of Morrison Hotel just makes more sense to me today, than it did say in 1982. I guess I never read into this album title as deeply as I do now. The songs on Morrison Hotel have never checked out for me. If anything, I will continue to “check-in” at the Morrison Hotel for the rest of my life… and be glad I did.

BEER CORPSE – “Keg Nuts” 7″: Roll Out Them Kegs O’ Beer, Cause It’s A Grindcore & Thrashcore Blitz!

BEER CORPSE – Released back on April 27th, 2011, on Give Praise Records, is the 7″ from the Grindcore/Thrashcore outfit that is known across the planet as: Beer Corpse. This grind’em and thrash’em band is from down under. Um, that’s Australia, for those of you who live in that remote cave in the god forsaken woods of Maine. Whoever said “Beer Corpse is Australian for Extreme Metal” should have a 50 foot statue made of them in Metal. Oh, I said that. Cool.

Beer Corpse don’t hold back on serving out the aggressively punishing riffs, beats and monstrously brutal vocals. On a rather serious Metal note here, if you are a fan of Grindcore and Thrashcore, then you are in for an all-out blitz of grinding, growling, gurgling, chugging, riffing and blast beatin’ swell o’ time with what Beer Corpse plays on Keg Nuts. Beer Corpse should also be embraced by hardcore Death Metal and Thrash Metal fans alike, with their unapologetic and quite impressive cross-over sound appeal.

To put Keg Nuts in a Metal nutshell, this is the 7″ you want to pull out and play F’n extremely loud when your prissy neighbors are having their annual family reunion in their backyard. Beer Corpse is THE Extreme Metal band to agitate and confuse the mainstream masses, while us fellow Metal minions of the damned shall raise this band upon our shoulders, as we march to F’n Metal victory… towards our glorious field of beer kegs.

AMON AMARTH – Starting today, fans can check out the new AMON AMARTH music video for the song Destroyer of the Universe off the band’s latest release, Surtur Rising. The live video, which is premiering exclusively on BlankTV , was shot on the band’s May 6th stop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Theatre Of Living Arts by director David Brodsky of MyGoodEye (The Black Dahlia Murder, The Devin Townsend Project, Suicide Silence, Municipal Waste, Whitechapel, etc).

Comments guitarist Olavi Mikkonen: “This time around we wanted to catch the energy and atmosphere of a live show, so we simply went for a live video. We look forward to get back to North America in August to continue and fulfill the ‘Evening with’ tour, meanwhile enjoy the video.”

Check out the video by clicking here: YouTube – Blank TV’s Channel and be sure to leave a comment.

In a recap of the band’s last tour in the US, Concertconfessions.com opined: “What is most beautiful about AMON AMARTH‘s triumph of America is that it’s as pure as the music itself… Friends sharing with friends the magic of the music, that is a true token of success and judging on the reaction from Southern California on Easter Sunday 2011 – AMON AMARTH will have success for a very long time.” The Washington Times applauded the band for leaving, “the sold-out crowd awestruck by [their] mastery of melodic death metal,” About.com boasted, “I was highly impressed by AMON AMARTH’s stage presentation, which easily rivals that of bands that normally fill arenas,” while Skullsnbones.com put it simply: “One band came and conquered Atlanta and their name is AMON AMARTH!”

Don’t forget to catch AMON AMARTH live when the band returns to North America for the second leg of the “An Evening with AMON AMARTH” tour.

Scheduled to kick off in Vancouver on August 4, the trek will pillage its way through 21 cities, including several Canadian venues, and come to a close in Boise, Idaho on September 3. Los Lonely Boys – Rockpango: A Positive and Feel Good Album of Dynamite Rock Songs

Posted in chicano rock, classic rock, Hard Rock, latin rock, metal odyssey, Music, rock album reviews, rock and roll, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , on June 27, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

LOS LONELY BOYS – Are you currently hankering for an album that is: feel-good, easy going, fun, a bit funky, has some Soul and a sliver of Rap, a bit bluesy with Latin flavor and simply Rocks? Well then, that album is Rockpango. I can’t hold back my enthusiastic liking for this new Los Lonely Boys album. Rockpango was released back on March 29th, 2011, on their very own Playing In Traffic/LonelyTone Records. Being an early Spring release, Rockpango has gained some mighty steam as one of my favorite Rock albums of 2011.

This album I’ve been addicted to for over two months now and it’s all about the songs baby… it’s all about the songs. When an album like Rockpango has so many good songs, then it becomes memorable for me. The Garza brothers (Henry, Jojo and Ringo) have a remarkable knack for writing mainstream songs that are still street cool. Maybe it’s the Texican Rock and Roll vibe happening, still, Los Lonely Boys are a band that makes any dreary thoughts evaporate from my Metal mind the very second I listen to their music. That’s feel-good.

My favorite song on Rockpango is Smile. The orchestration is what makes this song standout, with the violin, viola and cello stirring up my infatuation with (my) beloved Electric Light Orchestra. Not to mention the guitar resonates a Classic Rock sound on Smile, bringing a retrospective feel to my listen. The song Rockpango takes a major chapter out of Santana’s Latin Rock groove, coupled with some tasty, bluesy guitar licks. The B3 organ (Riley Osbourn) lends a Classic Rock appeal to the overall recipe that this Rockpango song is all about in sound.

16 Monkeys is a fun listen in both music and lyrics. Los Lonely Boys certainly have their funny side and this song is a throwback to when Rock and Roll really did take aim at the funny bone. “16 monkeys on a chuck wagon rollin’ down the road… uh, huh”. Need I say more about (gasp) fun and Rock and Roll? Porn Star has the Rap, courtesy of Kush and the cuts and scratches are thanks to DJ Beans. Make no mistake, Porn Star does Rock along and the Funk I hear is no junk.

The always constant and harmonious vocals of the Garza brothers on Rockpango is a quality listen in and of itself. There is much to be said about creating positive Rock and Roll and Los Lonely Boys are masters at this craft. Believe, Love In My Veins and American Idle are three songs that deliver the high spirited Rock that’s chock full of genuine messages of kindness. No, Los Lonely Boys aren’t preaching, they’re just three cool dudes that aren’t about spreading hate through their music. Metal be thy name.

An admirable characteristic of Los Lonely Boys is their talented ability to incorporate so many styles of music to their sound, without ever coming across as stretching themselves too thin. Rockpango has turned out to be a highlight listen for me in the Rock category this year and will remain just that for years to come. When I listen to Rockpango, I’m listening to three musicians who just love music… period.

ANTHRAX – Fight’em ’til You Can’t: New Song As A Free Download! It Shreds and It Generates Thrash Metal Euphoria!

Posted in Heavy Metal, heavy metal news, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, Thrash Metal, thrash metal albums, thrash metal bands with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on June 25, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

ANTHRAX – Yes, I like so many other countless Anthrax, Metal and Thrash Metal fans am extremely psyched-out from hearing the NEW Anthrax song: Fight’em ’til You Can’t. Plus… in case you haven’t heard yet and you live in a remote cave in the Maine woods… this new Anthrax song is available as a FREE download! That’s what I wrote: FREE! You can click here ANTHRAX – Official Website to get your free download of this blazingly Thrashin’ mad song now!

I will readily admit, that once I learned about this new Anthrax song being available for a free download (on twitter yesterday), I was happier than a Metal pig in mud. (Fight’em till’ You Can’t was made available on Friday, June 24th). I’ll say this, it was all the Metal buzz on twitter yesterday, once the press and all of us fellow Metalheads had this new Thrash dosage of Anthrax fueling our brains! Metal be thy name and ring that Thrash Metal bell… cause Anthrax has some new material!

This free download was made available by Anthrax as a “thank you” to all of their loyal fans. The new Anthrax album (tenth overall) Worship Music is slated for a September 13th, 2011 release! This release date is the day before Anthrax takes the stage at Yankee Stadium as members of The Big 4: Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. Hallelujah, Thrash Metal reigns supreme!

With legendary vocalist Joey Belladonna back at the mic on Fight’em till You Can’t, the Thrashin’ situation couldn’t get any better than this! Hard to believe, it’s been over twenty years since the last Joey Belladonna fronted Anthrax album (1990’s Persistence Of Time) and the time is now that Anthrax has delivered! Worship Music will be the first studio album from Anthrax since 2003’s (John Bush fronted) We’ve Come For You All. Um, Stone is quite elated.

In all Metal honesty, Fight’em till You Can’t is a tremendous Thrash Metal song. From the lyrics and insanely memorable guitar riffs and solo, this is vintage Anthrax at their Thrashin’ finest. Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano tear it up. Charlie Benante on drums sounds terrific as usual, along with Frank Bello on bass. Old School.

Joey sounds excellent on vocals and he brings back that real Old School vibe that this legendary band is so known for and glistens with. I’m guilty of whining for any new material from Anthrax for a long, long time now. My Metal whining is over. Thank you Anthrax for getting it all together and making it real for the fans… both young and Old School!

ANTHRAX:

Joey Belladonna – vocals

Scott Ian – guitar

Rob Caggiano – guitar

Frank Bello – bass

Charlie Benante – drums

Leslie West and Mountain – Roots of Heavy Music, Legends of Rock!

Posted in classic rock, classic rock albums, guitar legends, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 24, 2011 by Metal Odyssey

LESLIE WEST and MOUNTAIN – The news this week about Leslie West having to undergo a leg amputation is absolutely sad to hear. Complications from diabetes has caused this unfortunate trial for Leslie. I wish Leslie West a victorious recovery and shall keep him and his family in my prayers. I’m very happy to hear he is recovering. I read excerpts of Leslie’s call-in to Howard Stern’s satellite radio show (on Wednesday, June 22nd) where he explained the scary chain of events.

Leslie West is both a pioneer and legend of Rock music. Leslie pioneered heavy guitar playing, I shudder to think where Hard Rock and Heavy Metal would be without his signature guitar and vocal styles. I’m just an Old Schooler when it comes to Rock and Roll’s roots. I’ll continue to thank the guys and gals of Rock and Roll’s yesteryear for founding and shaping the music I so much love. Thank you Leslie West.

Throughout my life, I’ve read countless interviews of Rock musicians and Leslie’s name consistently turns up when the topic of “influence” is brought up. The same has held true when I’ve done interviews for either Hard Rock Hideout or Metal Odyssey, his influence is brought up consistently. Leslie West is not just another musician in Rock history, Leslie West is a key figure who helped build Hard Rock and Heavy Metal to where it is in 2011.

This past week I went digging around to see what Mountain albums I’ve reviewed and there are a couple. (See below). Check out these two Mountain albums (if you haven’t already), they quite simply… ROCK.

(MountainMasters Of War – 2007/Big Rack Records)
