MURDERDOLLS “WOMEN AND CHILDREN LAST” – MY FIRST METAL IMPRESSION

MURDERDOLLS – Yes, I made my Murderdolls CD purchase today, on it’s release date. The deluxe edition looked too fantastic to pass up, therefore I snagged this version of Women And Children Last and so far… it has served me right. The three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition are: Mother F**ker See, Mother F**ker Do, The Funeral Ball and A Moment Of Violence. The bonus DVD includes live songs recorded at The Key Club in W. Hollywood, CA on June 17, 2010.

So, what would my favorite track be thus far? Well, I have listened to Women And Children Last about five times today… and I am not remotely close to growing tired of one song yet. Actually, this new Murderdolls has been quite the escapism for me. The raucous, pissed off and nightmarish lyrics are a sheer delight to listen to… especially after I watched the news at noon today.

The lead single from Women And Children Last, My Dark Place Alone, still blasts out at me like a stick of Metal dynamite, leaving me thinking… this crazy shit is F’n fun! Blood Stained Valentine is one hell of groove infested number… it Rocks so hellishly fine this… Blood Stained Valentine! Summertime Suicide has some deep and depressing lyrics… only the melodic hardness of this song has taken me by surprise and makes it a damn cool song, worthy of hitting the repeat play button multiple times. Pieces Of You is another infectiously heavy and vibe ridden song that has me in Metal stitches.

Wednesday 13 has the vocals of a modern day Horror Punk meets Horror Metal superstar. Joey Jordison is Metal sound and Metal solid on guitar. If there is any question about Joey delivering the licks with a six string, then just one listen to Rock N Roll Is All I Got is the sure fire-slap to the forehead reminder that he is the real deal. Whoa… Rock ‘N’ Roll is (gasp) fun sometimes! Whatever You Got, I’m Against It electrifies with fun vibes throughout, with strong hints and deep shades of Punk Rock flavor… Old School style too.

Well, my first Metal impression of Women And Children Last, after nearly six thorough listens, is that this Murderdolls album is spontaneously contagious! I don’t predict that my Metal impression shall change anytime soon, unless… maybe I’ll like this new Murderdolls album even more with each listen. Murderdolls don’t disappoint on delivering the Heavy, nor do they disappoint on bringing some Horrific Fun back into the world of Rock ‘N’ Roll either. That’s my first Metal impression of Women And Children Last, so let it be Metal written, so let it be Metal done.

LONG LIVE MURDERDOLLS & THEIR ROCK ‘N’ ROLL!

HIGH ON FIRE “FROST HAMMER” – A METAL SONG FOR THE METAL AGES

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock albums, hard rock bands, hard rock music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal bands, heavy metal music, heavy metal songs, metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news, stoner metal music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 29, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

HIGH ON FIRE – Good health. Family. Cool Metal buddies. Sunny skies. Free stuff. Cold beer. Finding an independent record and CD store. Finding a quarter in the grocery store parking lot. Taking a relieving dump. Sure, these are all the big and some little things that can perk up the human spirit. However… it’s Metal that never fails to perk me up time and again, year after year, day after day.

Hearing that one Metal song that lifts me up is always a reminder as to why I am hooked on the greatest music in the history of mankind. What’s the greatest music in the history of mankind you query? Uh, it’s Metal. This is Metal Odyssey after all, that you are visiting. Sure, there are other Rock genres covered on Metal Odyssey… only Metal is the end all and be all. Metal be thy F’n name.

I’ll get to the Metal point here: Frost Hammer from the High On Fire album Snakes For The Divine – kicks some serious Metal ass. Frost Hammer is an instant adrenaline surge for me. Whoa… I’ve been Metal supercharged by High On Fire. A charging pissed off beast, out of the dark northern woods of no man’s land is Frost Hammer. Des Kensel on drums plays with enough fierce enthusiasm, with so many cool fills, that it’s mind numbing. Lead vocalist and guitarist Matt Pike leads the way with his nailed to the Metal riffs, leads and a solo so fast and tenaciously addicting that it smacks me senseless.

The triple Metal threat of Matt Pike, Des Kensel and Jeff Matz are as potent as any power trio I’ve ever listened to. For me to state otherwise, would be untruthful. On Frost Hammer these guys play tight, no, super tight, defining what “in-your-face” Metal is supposed to sound like. Frost Hammer is one of those great Metal songs, where I wish it would continue on for another five or ten minutes. Nonetheless, this song will always sound like an epic to me. High On Fire didn’t rewrite any sacred Metal rules with Frost Hammer… they just stayed true to ’em.

With speed and heavy coexisting so deliriously well on Frost Hammer, there is no moment to really catch your breath. This is not even a Thrash Metal song, yet it rivals the fierce and bombastic tempo of such. Just hearing Matt Pike bellow out – “Frost Hammer”! is enough to make me feel secure in my own little Metal world, which I love to get lost in continuously.

High On Fire doesn’t make Metal that’s fashionable, they make Metal that kicks ass… period.

MURDERDOLLS – ONE WEEK UNTIL “WOMEN AND CHILDREN LAST” RELEASES!

MURDERDOLLS – It’s Tuesday, August 24th, 2010. Next Tuesday, August 31st, the second studio album from MURDERDOLLS is released upon the world via RoadRunner Records. The buzz and excitement is building like an F’n tsunami with Women And Children Last due out one week from today. As I have been chatting with fans and several Metal buddies the past two weeks, the new MURDERDOLLS album seems to get brought up as if it was the beginning of a new chapter in Rock ‘N’ Roll history. Maybe this album will be just that, who knows?

So, what could all the excitement be about, when it comes to the new MURDERDOLLS album? For one, we are living in crappy economic times right now in America, so anything that can put our minds at ease about paying bills and making next month’s rent or mortgage payment is embraced by our sub-conscious and devoured like marble cake soaked in beer. I know for fact, that music is a driving force that steers my emotions and empowers me to live and love my life, regardless of how messed up the world news may be. (Yes, for the record, my wife and daughters are the #1 driving force that motivates me, only music helps to turn up my psyche-out dial until it smokes).

Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison are no strangers to the Metal and Extreme world of music. Hell, neither one of them are strangers to the Rock world period. Their talent as songwriters and musicians has been laid out before us fans and spread across albums that most of us consider damn right sacred. Slipknot is a band, whose lyrics and Metal reaches out and beats the piss out of my privately held emotions. Joey Jordison and Slipknot gave new meaning to captured aggressiveness through song. Wednesday 13 is a vocalist and musician who dared to be different a long time ago, hell, he obliterated the status quo while making stagnant Rock Music run for cover.

Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison are not your grab the money supergroup. They are the Saturday matinee, nightmare-double-feature that I crave to see and listen to. MURDERDOLLS are not a softened up act from the late ’70’s or ’80’s that is now preaching that their Metal has matured or progressed. No F’n way. These are two musicians that are NOT telling fans through interviews, that they should not be telling MURDERDOLLS what songs to play live. (Not from anything I’ve read or heard anyways).

The persona and image that MURDERDOLLS glistens with may not be brand new to Rock ‘N’ Roll, still it’s the uniqueness of these musicians themselves that adds to their overall mystique. Image aside, it’s the music of MURDERDOLLS that matters. I don’t envision anytime soon, MURDERDOLLS appearing onstage at the CMT Awards doing a country version of Dead In Hollywood. Sincerity and credibility sure does go a very long way with me… especially when it comes to music that’s fortified with 100% bad ass. The album title – Women And Children Last, advertises the sense of humor that MURDERDOLLS has, while sticking up a middle finger to the uptight world of political correctness. (Phew)… bad ass Rock ‘N’ Roll isn’t dead and buried after all!

After listening to My Dark Place Alone from the forthcoming Women And Children Last album for over a month now, I certainly hope that the entire album will be just as scorchingly powerful. The Punk subtleties that are aggressively fused with Metal, explode from My Dark Place Alone. Speed, Thrash and a sprinkle of Rob Zombie-ism in the vocals of Wednesday 13 seems to escalate with each passing second, as I listen to My Dark Place Alone. In the end, it’s the originality that means the most to my Metal ears. MURDERDOLLS do not have to make excuses to me if I hear any semblance of past Metal, Punk or Rock influences in their music.

Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison are going to throw hints around, through their songs, of their past musical background… it’s inevitable. The overall aggressive and horror based embellishment of their sound is what lures me the most, all the while knowing these two musicians are not just throwing a record together just because they can. I’m not expecting a carbon copy of their first album – Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls, the single My Dark Place Alone has changed all that thinking.

Horror Punk has always been the “evil kid on the block” within the Rock Music world that factually gets ignored by the mainstream, maybe that is why I fell head over Metal heels for Horror Punk so many full moons ago. Music evolves, so therefore bands evolve too. MURDERDOLLS are taking their music to the next level of Hard & Heavy and I am one fan who cannot wait to get my ears pummeled by Women And Children Last.

I can understand the excitement and the anticipation of this new MURDERDOLLS album, it’s an excitement that is flowing around my Rock ‘N’ Roll arteries and Metal veins as I am drafting this actual post. Bring it on MURDERDOLLS and stomp down upon the generic music vacuum!

MURDERDOLLS:

Wednesday 13 – vocals

Joey Jordison – guitar

Roman Surman – guitar

Racci Shay Hart – drums

Jack Tankersley – bass

MUSIC OUTLET – ENFIELD CONNECTICUT STORE HAS HEAVY METAL APLENTY!

MUSIC OUTLET – I journeyed back to Connecticut last week, the state where I was born and lived forty years of my life. Usually, the words: very expensive are always used to describe Connecticut on Metal Odyssey. Connecticut is very expensive, I should know. However, there is one store up in very expensive Connecticut that isn’t expensive at all. IT’S AN INDEPENDENT RECORD AND CD STORE! Located in the very friendly and cool city of Enfield, this store is called – Music Outlet. (See store contact info at bottom of post).

Scott Coverdale, our Metal Odyssey correspondent and Heavy Metal think tank, took me to Music Outlet on Friday, August 13th. Always bragging about just how incredible the selection of Metal is at this Music Outlet, Scott couldn’t wait to get me there. It felt like 1988 all over again… two Metal buddies, taking a long cruise to buy some Metal. Scott is a loyal customer at Music Outlet and has longed for the day, when I could finally browse through the vast selection that this store carries for Hard and Heavy Music.

Gary, the owner of Music Outlet, is very knowledgeable about Heavy Metal, Hard Rock and Rock ‘N’ Roll. That is exactly how a record and CD store owner should beknowledgeable about the product, the bands, the musicians and their music. I have to admit, it is always an unreal thrill to find an independent record and CD store, especially when we live during a transitional period of how Rock ‘N’ Roll is being listened to, bought and sold. This is the age of the mp3 and itunes. We can buy mp3’s on Amazon, Best Buy and countless other websites 24/7. Despite this unbeatable technology of digital downloading… I’m steadfast Old School and damn proud of it.

After one visit to Music Outlet, I have come to the realization that Gary is Old School too. There is a market out there that wants their Rock ‘N’ Roll on vinyl and/or CD still. I’m a part of that Old School market. Gary’s store has the goods… and there is Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Punk Rock and Rock ‘N’ Roll aplenty to be found at this Music Outlet. From vinyl to CD’s, from the obscure to posters, with band t’s and music DVD’s in-between, Gary’s store is bolstered with every sub-genre of Metal Music that is known! As an added bonus… Gary has all upcoming Metal and Hard Rock album release dates posted up for all customers to see.

There are the “little things” that an Old School Metalhead may need to buy at Music Outlet as well… blank cassettes, vinyl album sleeves and CD jewel cases are also available to purchase. You read that correctly… blank cassette tapes! Now… that’s Old School! Plenty of promo posters from various record companies are hung about Music Outlet and the Metal is played loud throughout the store.

The prices are very competitive to any online record/CD store, with both used and new albums & CD’s being sold at Music Outlet. There are many great CD titles being sold new for around $10, with used CD’s being around $6. I found the selection of new CD’s to be the best I’ve come across in years, at an actual physical location and not online! Whoa. Easily, I could have spent well over my budgeted limit… it took some very strong Metal will power to not go overboard! Admittedly, I was semi-shaking at the overall selection of Metal CD’s that Music Outlet had for sale.

Gary told me I can call him anytime to order by phone, he said he has no problem in shipping out the Metal! Mail order Metal! I’m more than happy to pay for shipping, especially when a hard to find or highly sought after Metal CD can be found at Music Outlet. Meeting Gary, perusing his abundant supply of Metal CD’s and taking in the Old School, independent Record & CD store experience at Music Outlet, was a fabulous way to spend some of my time while back in Connecticut.

* Here are the 3 CD’s I bought at Music Outlet:

Iron Maiden – The Final Frontier (Mission Edition)

Primal Fear – Metal Is Forever

Bonded By Blood – Exiled To Earth

Scott Coverdale’s 3 CD’s purchased at Music Outlet:

Iron Maiden – The Final Frontier

Holy Mother – Toxic Rain

Michael Schenker Group – Built To Destroy

* I without hesitation, recommend any Metalhead or fan of any Rock genre to stop by Music Outlet in Enfield, CT… or give Gary and his Metal crew a call and order your Metal fix by phone! Patronize Music Outlet… it will serve you right. Tell ’em Stone and Scott Coverdale sent you.

HEAVY METAL FACTS – Here are some cool and thought provoking Heavy Metal facts that you may find enlightening and/or life changing. Enjoy this list… enriching the Metal mind might just serve you right!

* Paul Mario Day was the original lead vocalist for Iron Maiden. Of course, Paul did not record an album with Iron Maiden, he was their lead vocalist from 1975-1976.  Paul Mario Day later formed a NWOBHM band named More, which recorded two studio albums: Warhead (1981) and Blood & Thunder (1982).

* Lemmy Kilmister, vocalist, bass guitarist and founding member of the unreal legendary – Motorhead, celebrates his birthday on Christmas Eve… December 24th. Lemmy was born in 1945.

* The tombstone on the front cover of the live Iron Maiden double album – Live After Death, reads: “That is not dead which can eternal lie, yet with strange aeons even death may die”. This quote is taken from the iconic H.P. Lovecraft’s book – The Nameless City.

* Ralf Scheepers, lead vocalist for the German Power Metal Band – Primal Fear, was a finalist to replace Rob Halford as the new lead vocalist for Judas Priest. As the Metal story goes… Tim “Ripper” Owens became the “new” lead vocalist for Judas Priest, being hired by The Priest back in 1996. Rob Halford returned to Judas Priest in 2004… with Angel Of Retribution (released in 2005) being the “reunion” album for these Heavy Metal legends of all legends.

* Vinnie Moore – this guitar legend appeared on the Alice Cooper album Hey Stoopid, released back in 1991. Vinnie played guitar on two songs: Hurricane Years and Dirty Dreams. Vinnie Moore is the lead guitarist for the incredible…  UFO, has been since 2004.

* Rob Zombie’s birthname is: Robert Bartleh Cummings. Rob Zombie was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on January 12, 1965.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD “NIGHTMARE” – SOME METAL THOUGHTS…

Posted in hard rock albums, hard rock bands, hard rock music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal albums, heavy metal bands, heavy metal music, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 8, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

AVENGED SEVENFOLD – If a band is going to move forward, stay close, remain musically focused and courageously continue on after the tragic loss of a cherished family member, Avenged Sevenfold sure is trying and obviously succeeding. A7X drummer Jimmy “The Reverend” Sullivan passed away on December 28th, 2009. As defined, inventive and polished of a talented drummer as there could ever have been, “The Reverend” without question will forever be missed. Nightmare proves that life really does go on for Avenged Sevenfold in it’s sheer fantastical way… I’m certain “The Reverend” is beyond proud, as he looks down upon his band of brothers.  – Stone

Recently, Eski (Metal extraordinaire and founding member of Morphine Killer and Igloo Warfare), gave Metal Odyssey his thoughts on Avenged Sevenfold – Nightmare.

Eski’s take on the new A7X CD:

“I’ve been a huge fan of A7X since their very first CD, ‘Sounding The Seventh Trumpet’ – back then, they were a local band that was very impressive. It has been nothing short of amazing to see what kind of release that ‘Nightmare’ has received, whether people like them or not. The one thing that always gets me about their music, unlike so many other bands I’ve listened to, is the fact that I look forward to listening to every single song on the CD, not just the one or two “good ones”.

When the band goes all out on songs, like “God Hates Us” or the first single “Nightmare”, it really makes my skin tingle. But honestly, there’s two AMAZING stand out tracks, which are the Rev’s final contribution to the CD, the haunting piano driven track “Fiction” (especially the ending), and the incredibly epic “Save Me”, which by the end of the track will have you thinking of nothing but the love that they wanted to give a fallen brother.” – Eski

DERAILED – A METAL ODYSSEY INTERVIEW!

Posted in Hard Rock, hard rock bands, hard rock music, Heavy Metal, heavy metal bands, heavy metal music, heavy metal news, metal odyssey, Music, rock music, rock music interviews, rock music news with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 4, 2010 by Metal Odyssey

DERAILED: Call ’em Old School. Call ’em Traditional Heavy Metal. I just call DERAILED damn good at delivering the Hard Rock and Metal goods. What makes DERAILED so retro-pleasin’ is their blending of Hard Rock and Metal and they do it with plenty of relevance and melodic might. If a NASA satellite ever picks up a thunderous sound coming out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, it is more than likely DERAILED playing a live set.

With their debut CD Judgement Day already released locally and to the music media, DERAILED is setting their sights on unleashing their brand of Metal onto the worldwide stage on September 6th, 2010. Good Metal Music gets heard. Great Metal Music gets heard and then screamed about amongst the Heavy Music community. I’m screaming here about DERAILED and their debut album Judgement Day.

DERAILED is led by guitarist and founding member Dean Boland. Dean also acts as songwriter, lyricist and producer for DERAILED. With years of Metal experience under his belt, Dean Boland has put together a band that exhibits an all encompassing talent and passion for the Hard & Heavy Rockin’ music they play. With vocalist Johnie Sin, drummer Terry Cornelson and bassist Steve LeGault, the Metal foundation of DERAILED is built, loaded and ready to succeed, with Dean leading the way.

Dean Boland took some time recently, to answer some questions for Metal Odyssey, here is what he had to say:

Stone: Just how did this talented group of musicians get together to form Derailed?

Dean: Derailed was originally formed in 2008. Terry, aka “Big T” was my drummer in my solo project BOLAND PLAN in 2006, so it just felt natural to keep playing together in the new “heavier” project DERAILED. We actually met at a Black Label Society concert and hit it off right away. Steve joined about half way through 2008, and we’ve known each other since the 80’s, you could say that he is one of the most sought out bass players in the city and has played in numerous “A” room cover bands including “The Guy Jones Band”, a local Alice Cooper tribute band and “Original Sin”, an Ozzy tribute. Johnie came along in 2009, when I decided to give up the lead vocal position & just concentrate on guitars. Johnie is the lead singer for the local Iron Maiden tribute band “Edward The Great” here in Calgary and when I went to check him out at a show, you could say he had the goods to take DERAILED to the next level, something I couldn’t quite do. So after auditioning him in my studio on a few songs, we decided to make a go of it. Unfortunately, all the songs were already written when Johnie came along, so he hasn’t quite put his stamp on the band as of yet, but the future looks very bright & he brings lots of excitement to the table.

Stone: On “Judgement Day”, a nod to Hard Rock and Melodic Metal is ever present. What was the process or mindset in choosing the music style of Derailed?

Dean: I’ve always been a big fan of metal/melodic metal since as long as I can remember. It just felt natural to start playing heavier and more aggressive. When I played in RANDOM DAMAGE (Mascot Records), our debut self titled CD was really heavy, you could probably classify it as Thrash Metal, Ray Hartmann formerly of ANNIHILATOR was the drummer, and that was a big part of our sound. BOLAND PLAN was more of an experiment for me as a lead vocalist, more of a hard rock/alternative sound, maybe in the vain of The Foo Fighters, STP style. I think my Metal roots took me back to where I began and really loved to play guitar. I missed playing solos and having intricate drum fills, etc… having that aggressive tone. So for me, I think I’ve come full circle, and have started to write some killer shit now!

Stone: Dean, you have been involved with many other bands and projects over the years. How valuable is it to have experience in today’s music industry?

Dean: Absolutely invaluable! I’ve really been able to hone my writing and producing skills because of all the projects I’ve been involved in. I never did do the “cover band” thing, maybe for the first year I was learning…. That’s a funny story, I played in a band called AGGRESSOR , and our set list consisted of 12 Metallica songs (first 3 albums), 12 Iron Maiden songs (first 3 albums), 3 to 4 Judas Priest, Anthrax, and Megadeth songs. Talk about being thrown into the “Metal Fire”!! Nevertheless, it really developed my chops for playing metal and loving it every minute. After that band, I formed my first original Metal band called DOOMSAYER and left the “cover planet” forever!

Stone: How much fun “and” hard work was it, bringing this Derailed debut album to reality?

Dean: Writing and recording is always fun and exciting. It’s very rewarding watching a song take form from where it started from. Yes, it is a lot of hard work… but at the end of the rainbow, it’s all worth it. Creating is what I do best and what I love to do. For me, the most important aspect of the music is will people believe it? Is it real? Is it honest? So I just write what naturally comes out and go from there.

Stone: Will Derailed be touring the United States later in 2010?

Dean: Probably not, but would love to. We are currently looking for management to help out in that area. Touring is high on our priority list, but it has to make sense financially. As long as the CD gets good reviews, I think touring will fall into place naturally, and what better place to start than P.A.!! Maybe you could put something together for us?

Stone: I’ve never dabbled in concert promotion before… now you have given me something to ponder!

Stone: Are you interested in having Derailed play a future festival in the States?

Dean: Festivals would be awesome! I look forward to playing a large venue, as do the other guys. Do you have one in mind??

Stone: I can see Derailed fitting in quite well with the likes of an M3 Rock Festival or Rocklahoma. Actually, you guys could play any Hard Rock or Heavy Metal Festival with the sound, style and attitude your packing!

Stone: Derailed certainly exhibits an Old School sound and feel in their songs. What band or bands are the core of your heavy music influence?

Dean: I think a lot of our metal influence come from bands like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kings X, Metallica(old), Rush, Black Sabbath and Black Label Society.

Stone: As a lyricist, where do you draw the most inspiration from?

Dean: I draw most of my inspiration from real life situations, whether it’s war, or peace for that matter. Reality sometimes sucks, so it’s easy to draw topics from real events. I try and look at the positive outcome a negative situation can have. That being said, I’m considering doing a concept theme for the next CD, so a fictional story isn’t out of the question.

Stone: I really appreciate your cover of “I Want To Change The World” on “Judgement Day”. How did you decide to cover this classic song?

Dean: That’s a song that’s always stuck with me, right from the first time I ever heard it. I always talked about covering it on an album, so when the chance finally came, it was great! I’m really happy the way it turned out, Johnie really delivered on it!

Stone: Johnie certainly did!

Stone: “Shine” is my favorite song on “Judgement Day”, can you give some details as to how this song evolved?

Dean: I originally wrote that song for Random Damage some years back, so I’ve been carrying it around for a while. It’s about personal gratification, achieving your goal in your life quest, so to speak. For me, playing on stage in front of people who adore what you do, there is no better feeling in the world, you yearn to SHINE…

Stone: I liken “Judgement Day” to be a throw-back album, where each song matters. Is this statement accurate?

Dean: Yes, I think so. I think melody & heaviness is a very powerful combination, and if done properly can be very memorable. I believe each song has it’s own identity…. At least I hope they do!

Stone: Dean, you have worn many hats in the music industry over the years, which hat is your favorite?

Dean: The hat I’m wearing now seems very comfortable! It feels good to be writing songs that people appreciate, but most of all, that I’m digging! I’m really looking forward to the next CD, you never know what hat I’ll have on.

Stone: If Derailed could hook up with any band in the land to tour with, what band would that be?

Dean: Very good question… I think the rest of the band might have an answer all their own. For me, it would have to be Dream Theatre. Petrucci is just so good. Iron Maiden would be stellar as well!

Stone: Fantastic choices, Dean. I can easily envision DERAILED touring with those two legendary bands!

THROWDOWN – RELEASE 2 NEW MUSIC VIDEOS FROM THEIR “DEATHLESS” ALBUM!

THROWDOWN RELEASE TWO NEW MUSIC VIDEOS FROM THEIR LATEST ALBUM “DEATHLESS”

(New York, NY) — THROWDOWN will be unleashing two new music videos for songs “Tombs” and “Blinding Light” from their latest full length DEATHLESS today, exclusively on Metalinjection.com. The band had not so recently released two videos for songs “This Continuum” and “The Scythe” earlier this year on Headbangers Ball, vocalist Dave Peters explains the difference this time around.  “‘Tombs’ and ‘Blinding Light’ are my two favorite songs on the record. ‘Blinding Light’ didn’t initially have that creepy vibe that it took on later during production. Unfortunately, the vocal and guitar layers are what give it that vibe, and it’s not real easy to reproduce live as a four-piece. I’m notorious for painting us into a corner that way, but it’s ridiculous to dumb a song down or not use parts in fear of translating it live in my opinion.”

Peters goes on to talk about a past experience of playing a new song live, and the sometimes spur of the moment tactics used to get through a set. “We actually played it live once before we finished writing it. I straight up free-styled the lyrics. No one even noticed. Just nonsense.  I probably mentioned waffles and Manny Ramirez. We played with DANZIG that night and I sang the ‘Danzig shopping list’ (http://bit.ly/ccTPQX) while Mark was tuning. About 9 people lost their minds. The other 2400 were confused.”

Videos for “Tombs” and “Blinding Light” can be viewed here: http://bit.ly/cKR5n8

THROWDOWN’S latest album, DEATHLESS was released last year to extraordinary critical praise.  DEATHLESS has been hailed as the bands most powerful and diverse offering to date.

“Simply put, ‘Deathless’ is a breath of fresh air in a scene that has been overrun with deathcore / screamo clones.”- Loudside.com 8/10

“The gents have given it their all with the outcome being more sharp, crisp and with an emollient approach that still stays old school.” ABORT Magazine

“With Deathless, Throwdown find the perfect combination of beauty and brutality to create an absolute metal masterpiece!” thenewreview.net 5/5

BORIS RANDALL OF SPLATTERPUNKS, HALLOWMAS & NOW… NECROPHAGIA: IN HIS OWN WORDS!

BORIS RANDALL

STONE: Recently, Boris Randall contacted Metal Odyssey and it is appreciated. Boris is a veteran of Punk and Extreme Metal Music, being a pioneer, in his own right, in the Horror Metal genre. A song writer, vocalist and lead/rhythm guitarist who really adheres to Rock ‘N’ Roll’s true roots, (Boris lists Elvis Presley, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Ramones as influences), he is a musician that is self-made and moving forward. Albeit underground or on Coffin Records, the music of Boris Randall has made some noise in the Heavy Music world over the last twenty + years. Boris has given Metal Odyssey, to share with fans, his career breakdown of bands he has founded and what he is up to at the moment. Here is what Boris Randall had to say and share:

BORIS: First off, I’d like to thank you for supporting Hallowmas and my music. Let me give you some history on myself and how Hallowmas came to be and where it stands now.

In 1989 I formed my first hardcore/punk band called THE SPLATTEPUNKS. We released several albums locally and underground. Complete do-it-yourself. We were relatively popular for what we were doing, and the fact that we were the ONLY punk/hardcore band with a horror image and horror lyrics within an 80 mile radius! (remember, in 1989 there was NO “horror punk” genre either) THE SPLATTERPUNKS kicked unholy ass until 1999 when I felt like it was time to move on. Our final release was an anthology that spanned our 10 years. Two cds, 76 songs, and a 28 page booklet that included lyrics and artwork.

HALLOWMAS – THE ROAD TO HALLOW’S EVE album cover:

In 2001 I formed HALLOWMAS. The idea was to take up where I left off with THE SPLATTERPUNKS, but to bring even more elements into it. And I did. I even brought a few of The Splatterpunks’ songs into Hallowmas. Hallowmas was a VERY busy band between releases, shows, interviews, videos, etc. The first Hallowmas release (on a real label) was in 2004 on Coffin Records. The album was called “October Burning.” It sold very well and continues to. It also received great reviews. The follow up was the ep you have called “The Road To Hallows Eve.” We went into the studio in 2006 and recorded our next full-length release, but the band broke up. That album, which I called “Autumn’s Soft Decay,” was never released even though it was finished and is in my possession. It also got leaked on the internet, so search the title and see if you can find it. The complete album is 18 tracks.

HALLOWMAS – OCTOBER BURNING album cover:

HALLOWMAS – classic promo group photo:

In 2006 I also released a solo disc called “Season Of Death: The Last Halloween.” I limited it to 50 copies, which lasted about 4 weeks. I filled the time from 2007 to now by working with various bands, writing background music for the Rue Morgue Radio show, did the music for a Rue Morgue Radio video promo, and wrote the score for the Bill Hanzman’s Night Of The Living Dead stage play.

Currently, I’m playing lead guitar in the extreme metal band NECROPHAGIA. If you’re well versed in metal I’m sure you know who they are. We’re in the studio right now working on our new album.

I’ve also got my own band that will have a debut release very soon, but I’m keeping the whole thing under wraps for right now.

That’s pretty much the light detail version of my history. Here’s a more detailed “time line” from my bands and their releases:

THE SPLATTERPUNKS:
1989 “Rat Boy”
1990 “It’s Only Murder”
1993 “The Ghoul Rock Session”
1994 “Live In Wellsville”
1996 “The Devil’s Empyrean”
1997 “1997 B.C.”
1999 “The Demonology” (anthology)

HALLOWMAS:
2002 “Zodiac” (single)
2002 “From Beyond” (single)
2003 “Unholy Autumn” (ep)
2004 “Dead And Buried” (ep)
2004 “October Burning” (Coffin Records)
2005 “Death Comes In Threes” (split full length)
2005 “The Road To Hallows Eve (Coffin Records)
2006 “Autumn’s Soft Decay” (STILL UNRELEASED)

THE AUTUMN DEAD:
This was a side project with Hallowmas bassist, Johnny Coffin. We made one release:
2003 “Demos”

BORIS RANDALL (solo):
2006 “Season Of Death: The Last Halloween”

I’ve also made guest appearances on:
Nokturne “Kruelty Kampaign”
Necrophagia “Goblins Be Thine”
Morgue Wagon “Morgue Wagon”
Garbage Pail Kids “Lover’s Lane”

I think that about covers it…….so far. I’ve got tons more music on the way. If you like Hallowmas I can’t wait for you to hear what I’ve got cooking. Plus, I hope you’ll enjoy my work in Necrophagia.

Thanks for your interest and support,
stay evil,
Boris

Metal Odyssey Note: Thank you Boris. It is always a thrill to get the “story straight” directly from the source. You and all of your bands are always welcomed at Metal Odyssey! Plus… I have a sinister suspicion I’m gonna like your work with Necrophagia’s new album… Deathtrip 69.

IRON MAIDEN – The fifteenth studio album from the unparalleled legends of Metal will be released on August 17, 2010, on Sony Legacy. The album is called…

IRON MAIDEN – THE FINAL FRONTIER

Check out – The Final Frontier – Directors Cut, which was aired worldwide on July 13, on Iron Maiden’s official website! (See link below)

As a lifelong fan of IRON MAIDEN, I will readily admit my unreal anticipation and excitement for The Final Frontier. Each time I listen to the song, Satellite 15..The Final Frontier, (the new Iron Maiden music video), I realize that Bruce Dickinson’s vocals have never sounded more prolific and the band never more powerful. IRON MAIDEN hasn’t just stood the test of time, they have obliterated any thoughts of not staying on top of the Metal world.

The Metal world as I know and listen to it… would never be this dynamic, proud, supercharged and full-scale if not for IRON MAIDEN. Truth be told… my life as a Metalhead would not have been the same, if not for the catalog of albums created by IRON MAIDEN. I can only state this about a select group of Metal bands… and IRON MAIDEN rises triumphantly from this group. Metal be thy name.

MURDERDOLLS – “WOMEN AND CHILDREN LAST” RELEASES AUGUST 31, 2010!

MURDERDOLLS – And on the 13th day, God created the Murderdolls. O.k., so maybe God did. The real Metal fact is this: Murderdolls are BACK! On August 31, 2010, ROADRUNNER Records will be releasing the newest installment of heavy duty carnage, from this Supergroup. The legendary Joey Jordison (Slipknot) plays both guitar and drums on Women And Children Last. Wednesday 13, (Yes, that Wednesday 13!), is the lead vocalist and plays guitar and bass as well.

* Metal Odyssey Note: I did refer to Joey Jordison as “legendary”… and if anyone disagrees, well, you obviously have never listened to any Slipknot albums in your entire life… especially All Hope Is Gone. Metal be thy name.

On June 22, 2010, the RoadRunner Records website was serving up, (for just 48 hours), a free download of the Murderdolls single – My Dark Place Alone, from the forthcoming Women And Children Last. I took full advantage of this Metal freebie. Let  me just describe this song as honestly as I can… An F’n intense and brutally supercharged Metal song, fueled with hellishly delectable speed and fury, that shall pummel thine senses into a state of maddening glee. ‘Nuff said. No? All right, here is a song review for the more intolerant and faint of heart out there: My Dark Place Alone shall invade your mind, space and soul by brute force… so grab your first aid kit, food rations, your ABBA albums, loved ones and seek shelter soon.

* Metal Odyssey Note: You can currently purchase My Dark Place Alone on itunes.

As read on the Murderdolls official website, (see link below), Joey Jordison states that Wednesday 13 came up with the new album title of Women And Children Last, being a funny joke on the Van Halen album “title” – Women And Children First, released back in 1980. (Just so the readers know… I revere that Van Halen album). Wednesday 13 reveals on the Murderdolls official website: “So the record is going to have ideas from all over the place. It’s heavy, it’s Glam Rock, it’s Hard Rock, it’s Metal, it’s… there’s not hip-hop though”. Sounds like a kickin’ ass album to Stone.

* From what I have been reading, Motely Crue’s legendary Mick Mars does appear on two songs, making Women And Children Last all the more Metal intriguing. Song titles have been revealed, with the two Mick Mars songs as well… only I don’t want to spell out these songs until it is “officially” stated on a credible site or from a credible source. Maybe this info is out there, already credibly established. Still, I just don’t want to wind up as a corn dog at the end of the day.

* Some of the new album’s song titles have been revealed on the RoadRunner Records website, (see link below), they are: Death Valley Superstars, Summertime Suicide, Drug Me To Hell and of course, My Dark Place Alone.

Murderdolls released their debut album in 2002 – Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls, on RoadRunner Records. Initially being a Horror Punk Band, Murderdolls are now promising a wide array of Heavy Music styles on Women And Children Last. From listening to their new single – My Dark Place Alone, Murderdolls have taken a few steps aside from their Horror Punk style of eight years ago. I really am looking forward to hearing this new Murderdolls album in it’s entirety. You can count on this album being reviewed right here on Metal Odyssey. I have a sinister suspicion I’m gonna really like it.

My favorite DANZIG song is…

DANZIG – In 1992, Danzig III: How The Gods Kill was released. My favorite DANZIG song of all-time is on this album… Dirty Black Summer. Oh yeah. This is the one. There’s something about the wickedness of this song’s tone, atmosphere and grooves. Plus, this song’s edgy heaviness and lyrics are what puts that sinister smirk on my face and attitude in my step. Dirty Black Summer is not a “fun in the Summer sun” song by any stretch of the imagination. With that said, all the guitar parts seem to remind me of those hot and humid Summer nights, where I am taking a long cruise in the car, with the window down, as fog begins to formulate in the air. I guess it’s just me.

Some time ago, I wrote up a brief review on this great DANZIG album. You can read it if you so wish, I actually recommend that you do. Just click the link below:

KINGDOM OF SORROW – RETURNS WITH THE METAL LETHAL “BEHIND THE BLACKEST TEARS”

KINGDOM OF SORROW – The triumphant Metal return of Kingdom Of Sorrow commenced on June 8, 2010, with the sophomore release of behind the blackest tears, released on Relapse Records. Better get your Metal game face on and strap yourself in, before you let this new Kingdom Of Sorrow album beat down your eardrums into submission. This album is a listen in the most cement shattering, steel bending and Earth stirring form. Crunching and thunderous invading guitar riffs courtesy of Kirk Windstein, (of Crowbar & Down fame), are an ultimate Metal statement from this Metal legend. Kirk sharing vocals with Jamey Jasta, (of Hatebreed fame) makes for one hell of a bone shattering Metal dynamic duo.

A vast audience of fans and critics call Kingdom Of Sorrow a supergroup and that is justified. I rather look upon Kingdom Of Sorrow as a real Metal group, no jet setting or bragging rants about their red carpet waltz’s… these are two blue collar Metal veterans that aren’t polishing off any plastic Grammy’s that sit atop a grand piano. Jamey Jasta and Kirk Windstein execute their brand of Metal like a crashing meteor, obliterating all the stillness and serene landscape that gets in their way. They serve it up and smack you down with their extreme vocals, combined with heavy as molasses riffs, that explodes Doom meets Stoner and mixed with some good ol’ Sludge in it’s most ferocious form. Listening to behind the blackest tears isn’t comparable to opening up a can of Metal whoop ass, instead it’s like opening up a 5o gallon drum of Metal whoop ass. Metal be thy name.

Enlightened To Extinction greets you with an apocalyptic riff that leads into some melodic heaviness courtesy of a nod to some Metalcore, with Jamey Jasta exhibiting his Metal vocal diversity. God’s Law In The Devil’s Land pulsates with Kingdom Of Sorrow’s Metal fury, giving every reason as to why Jasta and Windstein are so great at sharing lead vocals. This song should be played extremely loud, atop a creepy mountain peek, during a full moon for some unsuspecting innocent village below to get panicked by. As Hardcore as Monuments Of Ash sounds, it’s Metal leanings and fillings are what makes the hair stand up straight on my arms. Whoa, does Monuments Of Ash kick my Metal lovin’ ass.

Behind The Blackest Tears can easily be targeted as my favorite song, it grooves along so incredibly heavy and just gives off some invitingly creepy vibes from every musical angle. From Heroes To Dust is another opportunity where Jamey Jasta lets his vocal diversity be heard. A more somber and turned down vocal delivery only gives From Heroes To Dust it’s proper due. This song is probably the closest thing Kingdom Of Sorrow will ever get to creating a ballad. Salvation Denied is without deliberation, the most Extreme and vocally Hardcore laced song on behind the blackest tears… and a damn good song at that.

No Class, the Motorhead cover song, is done quite impressively by Kingdom Of Sorrow. It’s an intimidating hurdle to cover a true classic like No Class, only Jasta comes impressively close to the legendary Lemmy Kilmister’s unique vocal style. As far as the music and song structure goes, Kingdom Of Sorrow left well enough alone… and that’s a great thing, if it aint broke don’t fix it. Still, hearing this version of No Class on the limited deluxe version of behind the blackest tears is a welcomed Metal treat to my Old School ears.

Soldiers Of Hell, the Running Wild cover song, plays out with an ultra contagious Heavy Metal vibe that is non-stop. The guitar play are an intense high to listen to on Soldiers Of Hell, proving to be a fabulous song choice for Kingdom Of Sorrow to cover. Saluting a real-deal, Old School and pioneering German Heavy Metal Band as Running Wild, along with covering the immortal and ultra important Motorhead, gets a Metal kudos from Metal Odyssey!

I purchased the deluxe edition of behind the blackest tears at my neighborhood fye, at a very decent price of $8.99, (U.S.). The cover pic, at the top of this post, is that of the slipcase cover of this deluxe edition. (The regular cover pic for behind the blackest tears is seen below the band names).

* Metal Odyssey gives behind the blackest tears – 5 out of 5 Metal Fists!

Who am I to find something wrong with this great album? When the Metal is this great, I stand up straight, bang my F’n head, raise the horns to the air and tell it like it F’n is.
