METAL MASSACRE XIII – 2006 Compilation Of Metal Is All About Extreme!

METAL MASSACRE – Released on June 13, 2006, Metal Blade Records continued their excellent Metal tradition of delivering a heavy dose of their best signed bands that their label has to offer, with another ear blistering installment to their historic Metal Massacre series – Metal Massacre XII. There are 19 songs on Metal Massacre XIII and that = Metal value. From Bolt Thrower to The Absence, this compilation of Extreme Metal bands never subsides with unmistakable intensity.

Here is a brief and summarized history of the Metal Massacre album series: In 1982, Brian Slagel, the founder and owner of Metal Blade Records, put together and released a compilation of unsigned and underground Metal bands… that first compilation album being aptly titled – Metal Massacre. Onward through the ’80’s and ’90’s, another eleven Metal Massacre compilation albums were released through Metal Blade Records. Back in 1995, Metal Massacre XII was released on Metal Blade Records and was tentatively the last in this incredible series of Metal compilation albums… until eleven years later, in 2006, when Metal Massacre XIII was released!

Admittedly, over the decades and throughout this entire series of Metal Massacre albums, I have been exposed to Metal bands that I was not too familiar with. This still held true with Metal Massacre XIII, with The Absence, The Ocean, Cellador, The Black Dahlia Murder, Gaza and Demiricous being bands that I have pursued with my ears, due to their being featured here. Metal exposure is a good thing… Metal be thy name.

The first band heard on this compilation is Cellador, with Leaving All Behind. Cellador is a Power Metal band from Nebraska… and they are as potently heavy as they are melodic. Leaving All Behind is built around guitar speed that is reminiscent of ’80’s Speed Metal. I’m hoping Cellador carry’s on their Power Metal ways… just an above decent band they are. The Black Dahlia Murder brings on the Extreme with Miasma and it is as punishing as any song they have ever made. Brutal stuff is Miasma… I dig it tremendously.

Six Feet Under is unleashed with Shadow Of The Reaper and it is a Death Metal delight. It’s all about the grooves man… the Death Metal grooves of Six Feet Under! Chris Barnes on vocals ferociously delivers, per usual. The Absence has become a big favorite of mine and From Your Grave is Melodic Death Metal at it’s very finest. A real fine listen on this Metal Massacre album is God Dethroned smashing it down with Sigma Enigma. This song I found to be instantly memorable for it’s hell bent consistency.

Amon Amarth and their song The Pursuit Of Vikings is my favorite song on MMIII. Melodic as all hell, Amon Amarth is a giant of a band. Melodic Death Metal can put me into one super great mood and Amon Amarth never disappoints me. The riffs kick some serious ass on this song, while everything just seems to come together perfectly. Amon Amarth can play my backyard barbecue next Summer… if they liked to. And The Hero Fails definitely provides one meaty dose of Metal Extremity with His Imperial Victory, the same can be said for Gaza with Cult… holy crap I’m telling you all, these two bands are Heeeaaavvvy and Exxxttrreeeeme. ‘Nuff said about that.

You can find Metal Massacre XIII just about anywhere CD’s are sold (online that is). I was able to get my “new” copy a few years back pretty cheap… (around $5 U.S.). Since the inception of Metal Blade Records Metal Massacre I, this is a Metal series well worth diving into with thine ears. Metal Massacre XIII is again, a tremendous value for the money. Plus, you are getting introduced to a bevy of very cool and dynamite Metal bands that your maybe unfamiliar with. I highly recommend, with Metal might, this Metal Massacre XIII to any fan of Metal worldwide… and to all alien Metalheads in outer space too.

THANK GOD “Ice/Age” – Experimental & Punk = Mainstream Avenue Is Closed Dammit!

THANK GOD – With origins from Atlanta, Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina, Thank God is best described as a Punk, Experimental, Hardcore and Jam Band. With all of these descriptive genres going on, yes, Thank God does make a whole bunch of noise. Notable noise at that. One first listen through of Thanks God’s new album, Ice/Age and I realize that this band is a free styling and “who gives a crap what the rest of the world thinks” band. That’s what Experimental, combined with Punk and Hardcore is supposed to do to a band in the first place. Listening to Ice/Age tells me Thank God looks upon the words “status quo” as being toxic. With songs such as Shit and Wow to flood the senses into a bewildering blast of Hardcore Punk from Thank God, these two songs are worth slamming your body around to, at any hour… of any day… of the whole damn week. Still, Thank God can tone things down at times, with One Half being a semi-melodic introduction into where ever you may want to go, within your mind or by space travel. You can be your own damn navigator! The guitar notes and overall tempo of One Half gives off that feeling of… ready, set, now F’n go! (Which makes all the sense in the world… One Half precedes Set/Go). Set/Go elevates it’s tempo to berserk levels, with breakdowns galore. There are hints of Doom and Stoner guitar riffs that seem to sneak into Set/Go, adding another element that Thank God has thrown into this eclectic album of songs.

Hopefully, Thank God will not seek out any “polish” on the production end of the scale on their future albums. The blue-collar and garage-tinged atmosphere on Ice/Age, coupled with the youthful, “who gives a shit” attitude is just fine with me. The only instrument I would like to see Thank God not experiment with too often in the future with is the sax. I love the sax, however, Thank God incorporating this fine instrument into Ice/Age just doesn’t resonate any vibe of cool for me. Uncle Stone doesn’t likey. The sax, as played on this album, comes across as macabre to my ears, so maybe it has a vibe… o.k.? I just want Thank God to take the sax and put it away for now or put it on ebay. Then again, this is an experimental band I’ve been talkin’ about isn’t it? Regardless, the sax that was played on this album probably cried alone at night, knowing how it sounded and was treated.

Sax aside, Ice/Age is like a sign post that reads: Open minds may enter… others piss off. I like Thank God and their brand of noise. Vocally and musically, Thank God have their identity crisis in check. Thank God plays fast and delivers plenty of heavy moments to make me feel like my ears belong in their music. It’s bands like this, that push the elemental fusion of Heavy Rock genres into their own direction and walk away grinning… knowing they have freely expressed their language of music upon anyone who listens. I’m listening to Thank God and hopefully many others will too, just get off the mainstream bus that’s taking you to status quo la la land… dammit.

* Released back in July of 2010, on indie label Exotic Fever Records, Ice/Age is the debut full length from Thank God.

DENIAL FIEND “They Rise” – Horror Metal With Bludgeoning Grooves From 2007

DENIAL FIEND – They Rise, released back on October 16, 2007, on Ibex Moon Records, is as perfect a recommendation for your Horror Metal listening pleasure this Halloween season as any. The Death Metal growls, groans, gurgles and screaming are intertwined so fantastically with the sounds of spurting blood and vomiting, on this exceptionally horrific album. Listening to They Rise actually spooks me out more than watching any Exorcist sequel. (The original Exorcist movie was and always will be scary-bad-ass for me).

Denial Fiend, (calling Valrico, Florida their home base), takes the Horror Metal/Death Metal combination to the maximum and they don’t allow a millisecond for you to catch your breath or check your pulse. Maybe you can try to do this between songs, only I don’t recommend it, just kick back and enjoy the bludgeoning drumming, chugging and riffing while the Death Metal grooves pummel you senseless. This veteran “supergroup” of Extreme Horror and Death Metal, should hopefully realize they have made an album that is sure to be a cult favorite for dark ages to come. Metal be thy name, They Rise kicks some serious Horror Metal ass.

Which song on They Rise is my Metal favorite you query? It’s a no brainer… Return To The Tombs Of The Cursed Blind Dead, of course. Just the song title alone is a winner in my Metal book. I actually find myself singing along to this Extreme and groove saturated, Horror Metal gem.  The chorus that belts out this song title leaves me in Metal awe, in that it just sounds so damn good to thine ears. Flesheater is no slouch song either. Heavy, fast and brutally Heavy again is Flesheater, what more can I say?

There is a hint of Horror Punk within the framework of Denial Fiend’s Death Metal assault. Gang vocal chanting with a nod to vintage Misfits is common amongst this album, with Flesheater, The Day Of The Undead and They Rise as examples. Blazing guitar leads are abundant, with Cover Me In Blood having plenty of them. The guitar solo that is heard in Cover Me In Blood is the stuff of Old School Death Metal-take it or leave it carnage. Ripped Inside Out is just freaking scary. Metal be thy name. “I Ripped You Inside Out”! Whoa. Plus, as an Extreme bonus, the sounds of gore does rear it’s heinous head within this song too. Whoa again.

The same appalling and nightmarish subject matter that box office Slasher films boast are on They Rise… the only difference being the lack of any macabre and grotesque “visual” effects. Who cares about visual effects anyways, when you can listen to Denial Fiend. In all Metal honesty, I’d rather listen to They Rise than watch a bunch of actors in a Slasher film… (I do get squeamish at gross visual effects sometimes). Listening to Horror Metal and Death Metal is an acquired taste I have developed over many years, I just don’t understand why I still have to watch a Friday The 13th sequel with one eye closed… go figure.

Frankenstein Conquers The World is a whirlwind of Horror Metal… fun. (Gasp), did I just use the word “fun” in reviewing They Rise? I sure did and the lyrics to Frankenstein Conquers The World are to blame. It’s a great song that’s built on a full-scale blitz of Death Metal grooves, resulting in an instantly memorable listen for me. Let The Blood Flow starts off with a chain saw revving up… then the nightmare from hell begins and that’s a Horror/Death Metal compliment. Whoa, this song is F’n heavy, I really don’t know any other way to describe it. I can’t get all academic on reviewing Denial Fiend’s They Rise album… I don’t think this band would want it that way either.

The Day Of The Undead puts the bloody lid on They Rise, with plenty of saluting to the living dead happening. Good stuff. “It’s the day of the undead, it’s the end of everything”… good stuff again. As this song comes to a close, an eerie warning of “the dead coming back to life” and the precautionary measures that should be taken is heard, from a news broadcasters concerned voice… a creepy vibe spills all over the place as I listen to it. An undisputed creepy vibe at that. This song could and should be included on a major motion picture soundtrack for a Living Dead sequel. There, I’ve made my Horror Metal appeal to Hollywood.

In the end, Denial Fiend does accomplish two things: 1. their songs lyrics do send shivers up and down my Metal spine and 2. they play some very damn good Horror/Death Metal with unrelenting and Extreme Heaviness. Extreme, Horror and Death Metal fans should be able to wrap their ears around Denial Fiend and their 2007 album They Rise without a wince. Old School Hardcore and Thrash Metal fans are invited to check out Denial Fiend’s They Rise as well… there’s plenty of speed and heaviness to go around. Happy Halloween… all you ghoulish Metalheads!

Heavy Metal, Hard Rock And All Extreme Music Rules. Always Has, Always Will.

So let it be Metal written, so let it be Metal told.

Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Classic Rock and all Extreme Music Rules. There you have it. That’s how I feel and no one can change my Metal mind on this. When I reference “Extreme Music”… it is an all encompassing and generic term that I personally use. This includes Punk Rock, Death Metal, Black Metal, Gothic Metal, Grindcore, Hardcore and any and all sub genres of such Extreme Music. Metal be thy name.

* To all of the plastic mainstream “awards shows” that are televised throughout the year and continue to ignore the music and bands that are, (gulp), Heavy, (except for Revolver Magazine’s Golden Gods Awards), they can all kiss my Metal lovin’ ass.

* To the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame: (I think you all know this one is coming), you can kiss my Metal lovin’ ass.

* To all the phony millionaire/billionaire record executives throughout the decades that shunned Heavy Music so that zit-faced boy bands and lip syncing performers could get “pushed” up the charts and on radio… you can all really pucker up… and kiss my Metal lovin’ ass.

* To those “Four Cartels” of the music industry, that abolished Heavy Metal from FM airplay and MTV back in the early ’90’s… kiss my Metal lovin’ ass. You losers.

* To all the writers who give “lousy” reviews on a band’s album, (while not bothering to listen to the given album), due to a respective band having conservative views… you all can really kiss my Metal lovin’ ass. You know who you are too, you political phonies with dumb-ass agendas.

* To all the liars behind the misleading and bias “record charts”, just keep on fooling the public and kiss my Metal lovin’ ass while your at it.

* To all the members of the “Flavor Of The Month Club” when it comes to music: Hey! Kiss my Metal lovin’ ass! You bet you know who you are… now your embarrassed.

* To that old and cranky, dictatorial political group known as the PMRC, that wanted to “change the world” through their radical thoughts and abuse of power, many years ago… see below:

* To the idiots that decided to have “amended” versions of CD’s to sell, go ahead… kiss my Metal lovin’ ass. Censorship IS NOT COOL, especially when it comes to music. Um, wasn’t there something once known as – Freedom Of Speech in America? Kiss my Metal lovin’ ass again, you pathetic censor morons.

* To any band or musician who openly supports a presidential or any political candidate and gets mixed up in the immoral and unethical world of politics, by having a benefit concert for “political fundraising”… I don’t want you to kiss my ass. Please, just keep Rock ‘N’ Roll out of electing any millionaire/billionaire politician. Here’s a Metal thought: instead of having a fund-raising concert for some slimy politician, try having a fund-raising concert for a children’s hospital or orphanage. Duh. Duh again.

* To all the Phd’s, text book scholars and lawyers who “think” Heavy Metal promotes and causes violent behavior and deplorable acts on society… you can all take a bow… and while your bending over… kiss my Metal lovin’ ass.

* To all those who are annoyed that I use the fabulous word “Metal” so much in this and other posts on Metal Odyssey… um, you don’t have to kiss my Metal lovin’ ass at all. I actually have pity for you, due to the symptom you have, which is called: Metal envy. It must suck to have it.

I’m in a Metal lovin’ mood of the highest degree today, obviously. Then again, I’m always in a Metal lovin’ mood, only today it just feels so damn good. To all the nay sayers and antagonists of Heavy Music throughout the decades… hey… kiss my Metal lovin’ ass. You know why? Hell, we Metalheads, Punks and Extreme Music fans WON. The bands and the Heavy Music we love never hid, dried up or ran away. Many Heavy and Extreme bands have come and gone… still countless of these bands are still touring and making music to this very second.

I consistently try to remind visitors to Metal Odyssey, that there are scores of pathetic and narrow minded groups of people in our society that want to “control” and censor the Heavy Music that has made my life and countless other lives better. Self righteous and mean spirited groups like the PMRC need to be brought up over and over again, so fans of Heavy Music know of their censorship agenda that they set into place more than two decades ago. You can try to bury something that stinks and pretend it never existed… only the “stench” still lingers.

One last thought. To all of the idiots and “deep thinkers” that years ago would tell me “someday you will mature and stop listening to Heavy Metal and all that other garbage your listening to”… KISS MY METAL LOVIN’ ASS.

CANNIBAL CORPSE – 1998’S “GALLERY OF SUICIDE” ON 180-GRAM VINYL – RELEASES SEPTEMBER 28, 2010!

CANNIBAL CORPSE – The sixth studio album from Cannibal Corpse, Gallery Of Suicide, will be re-released on 180-gram vinyl on September 28, 2010, on Plastic Head. Originally released on April 21, 1998, on Metal Blade Records, Gallery Of Suicide was the second album to have George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher on vocals. This was also the first Cannibal Corpse album to have Pat O’Brien on guitar.

This album it outrageously brutal, from the song titles and lyrics to the Death Metal barrage heard within. ‘Nuff said about this album… alright, it’s wicked F’n Heavy. With every Metal re-release on vinyl, it certifies the fact that there are Metalheads out there that want to hear their bands the Old School way. Just like the Metal I live for, vinyl will never go away.

* As with most vinyl and 180-gram vinyl releases, Gallery Of Suicide is being touted as a “limited release”. I have seen it available for pre-order on Amazon.com.

THROWDOWN RELEASE TWO NEW MUSIC VIDEOS FROM THEIR LATEST ALBUM “DEATHLESS”

(New York, NY) — THROWDOWN will be unleashing two new music videos for songs “Tombs” and “Blinding Light” from their latest full length DEATHLESS today, exclusively on Metalinjection.com. The band had not so recently released two videos for songs “This Continuum” and “The Scythe” earlier this year on Headbangers Ball, vocalist Dave Peters explains the difference this time around.  “‘Tombs’ and ‘Blinding Light’ are my two favorite songs on the record. ‘Blinding Light’ didn’t initially have that creepy vibe that it took on later during production. Unfortunately, the vocal and guitar layers are what give it that vibe, and it’s not real easy to reproduce live as a four-piece. I’m notorious for painting us into a corner that way, but it’s ridiculous to dumb a song down or not use parts in fear of translating it live in my opinion.”

Peters goes on to talk about a past experience of playing a new song live, and the sometimes spur of the moment tactics used to get through a set. “We actually played it live once before we finished writing it. I straight up free-styled the lyrics. No one even noticed. Just nonsense.  I probably mentioned waffles and Manny Ramirez. We played with DANZIG that night and I sang the ‘Danzig shopping list’ (http://bit.ly/ccTPQX) while Mark was tuning. About 9 people lost their minds. The other 2400 were confused.”

STONE: Recently, Boris Randall contacted Metal Odyssey and it is appreciated. Boris is a veteran of Punk and Extreme Metal Music, being a pioneer, in his own right, in the Horror Metal genre. A song writer, vocalist and lead/rhythm guitarist who really adheres to Rock ‘N’ Roll’s true roots, (Boris lists Elvis Presley, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Ramones as influences), he is a musician that is self-made and moving forward. Albeit underground or on Coffin Records, the music of Boris Randall has made some noise in the Heavy Music world over the last twenty + years. Boris has given Metal Odyssey, to share with fans, his career breakdown of bands he has founded and what he is up to at the moment. Here is what Boris Randall had to say and share:

BORIS: First off, I’d like to thank you for supporting Hallowmas and my music. Let me give you some history on myself and how Hallowmas came to be and where it stands now.

In 1989 I formed my first hardcore/punk band called THE SPLATTEPUNKS. We released several albums locally and underground. Complete do-it-yourself. We were relatively popular for what we were doing, and the fact that we were the ONLY punk/hardcore band with a horror image and horror lyrics within an 80 mile radius! (remember, in 1989 there was NO “horror punk” genre either) THE SPLATTERPUNKS kicked unholy ass until 1999 when I felt like it was time to move on. Our final release was an anthology that spanned our 10 years. Two cds, 76 songs, and a 28 page booklet that included lyrics and artwork.

HALLOWMAS – THE ROAD TO HALLOW’S EVE album cover:

In 2001 I formed HALLOWMAS. The idea was to take up where I left off with THE SPLATTERPUNKS, but to bring even more elements into it. And I did. I even brought a few of The Splatterpunks’ songs into Hallowmas. Hallowmas was a VERY busy band between releases, shows, interviews, videos, etc. The first Hallowmas release (on a real label) was in 2004 on Coffin Records. The album was called “October Burning.” It sold very well and continues to. It also received great reviews. The follow up was the ep you have called “The Road To Hallows Eve.” We went into the studio in 2006 and recorded our next full-length release, but the band broke up. That album, which I called “Autumn’s Soft Decay,” was never released even though it was finished and is in my possession. It also got leaked on the internet, so search the title and see if you can find it. The complete album is 18 tracks.

In 2006 I also released a solo disc called “Season Of Death: The Last Halloween.” I limited it to 50 copies, which lasted about 4 weeks. I filled the time from 2007 to now by working with various bands, writing background music for the Rue Morgue Radio show, did the music for a Rue Morgue Radio video promo, and wrote the score for the Bill Hanzman’s Night Of The Living Dead stage play.

Currently, I’m playing lead guitar in the extreme metal band NECROPHAGIA. If you’re well versed in metal I’m sure you know who they are. We’re in the studio right now working on our new album.

I’ve also got my own band that will have a debut release very soon, but I’m keeping the whole thing under wraps for right now.

That’s pretty much the light detail version of my history. Here’s a more detailed “time line” from my bands and their releases:

EYES OF FIRE – “DISINTEGRATE” DEBUT EP FROM 2003 REVISITED!

EYES OF FIRE – Disintegrate is the debut EP released by Eyes Of Fire, back in 2003, on Century Media Records. This is a three song EP that is emblazoned with a mixture of Metal threads. From Doom and Stoner undertones to an all out Sludge Metal assault that takes the upper Metal hand. This debut EP may just have three songs, still, it is a very good Metal barometer of exactly how Eyes Of Fire see, feel, write and play their brand of Heavy Music. It’s EP’s like this, that gives fans a taste of what a band is about… and Eyes Of Fire is about bringing the Sludge Metal hammer down.

Eyes Of Fire is without question, an extremely heavy Sludge Metal Band, only they can create some songs that are entwined with a true semblance of melodic moments. Hopeless is just that song which does capitalize on the heavy side of the Sludge spectrum, yet this song has guitars and keyboards that emphasize key melodious balance throughout.

Disintegrate opens up with the guitar hitting on shades of Peter Buck of R.E.M. fame… only this song dislocates itself very quickly from any musical familiarity with that alternative sound. The guitar intro is more like a sound trap that sucks you into the Sludge Metal pit to the extreme. Tough, anti-mellow and raw, this song forms it’s heaviness around it’s chaotic and speed driven tempo.

Anyone begins with a soft segue, blanketing the atmosphere with tantalizing and head turning progressive tendencies. Not to get fooled though… Eyes Of Fire kicks it into Sludge Metal gear within the blink of a Metal eye, transcending Anyone into a thickly heavy, emotional and angst driven song. Anyone easily is my top pick out of the three songs on Disintegrate, based on it’s credible heaviness and emotion scorched vocals.

* My Metal research has found, that Eyes Of Fire were formed back in 1998 and went by the band name – Shiva.

* The songs Hopeless and Anyone were later included on the Eyes Of Fire full length studio album – Ashes To Embers, released in 2004 on Century Media Records.

* Before the formation of Eyes Of Fire, Dan Kaufman (vocals & guitar) and Matt Fisher (vocals & bass) were the founding members of Mindrot, a mid to late ’90’s Doom Metal Band once signed to Relapse Records.

IWREASTLEDABEARONCE – An Avant-Garde Metal Band, they do not disappoint on the Extreme whatsoever. Just one listen to You Ain’t No Family will prove this point… very clearly. I always like wandering regularly, into the Extreme Metal side of the Universe. IWREASTLEDABEARONCE has caught my Metal attention and I really do not know how this band could become any heavier or more extreme. Is IWREASTLEDABEARONCE the future of Metal? In my Metal opinion, nope. However, this amazingly Extreme Metal Band is gonna make a run… at being at least a part of the future of Metal!

If you have neighbors that have been really annoying you lately, just turn the volume up very high on You Ain’t No Family, with the repeat button within reach, with your house windows up. This will make anyone aware instantly, that Extreme Metal exists and is not going away anytime soon!

I hope you enjoy this song and video of You Ain’t No Family as much as I do!

DEATH METAL 101: OBITUARY – “LEFT TO DIE” EP

OBITUARY – released their Left To Die EP on September 16, 2008, on Candlelight USA/Gibtown Records. This EP contains four songs and one bonus CD ROM video of  Evil Ways. Check out this Evil Ways video below… it’s unreal great, Obituary just lets it groove with their Death Metal brand, along with this video’s underground ambiance and feel.

Two of the songs on Left To Die are also on the full length studio album – Darkest Day, which was released June 30, 2009, on Candlelight USA/Gibtown Records. These two songs are: Forces Realign and Left To Die. Slowly We Rot is a 2008 re-recording of the title track from their legendary debut album from 1989 – Slowly We Rot.

The cover song Dethroned Emperor, is a fantastic tribute to the iconic and extreme Celtic Frost, a song in which Celtic Frost released back in 1984 on their debut album – Morbid Tales. This song is noted as an additional song, on the USA release version of Morbid Tales. Obituary brings to the forefront, a beyond fabulous song from Celtic Frost’s early beginning… it’s Metal history.

Left To Die is without Metal question, a MUST for any Obituary and/or Death Metal fan. WITCHCRAFT – “IF CRIMSON WAS YOUR COLOUR” RARE, GREEN 45RPM – I’LL SHOW AND TELL!

WITCHCRAFT – is a throwback Metal Band, a Stoner Metal Band if you will. This band is also well known as Doom Metal. O.k., they are resiliently Old School Heavy Metal, that is for certain. Metal is… Metal. Listening to Witchcraft is always like a breath of fresh Metal air for me. I just get that everything is mysteriously mellow vibe from their music, uh, Metal. Even if the lyrics from Witchcraft are a bit doom & gloom, it doesn’t get me down. Basically, Witchcraft does cast a Metal spell on me! (Man, is that corn dog or what?). Early last year, I picked up a downright nifty Witchcraft 7″ vinyl single, (45rpm), that is green. You betcha… green vinyl. (See pics of my Witchcraft 45 below at bottom). My Metal research has found that the green vinyl pressing I own is considered a repress from 2007… and limited to 200!!! There is only 200 of these Witchcraft 7″ green vinyl, 45rpm’s in the entire world!!! I’m very pleased to be the owner of one.

Both songs carry a semblance of early years Heavy Metal, sprinkled with some psychedelia nuance. The riffs scream Old School, as well as the vocals of Magnus Pelander, who also plays guitar. The echo vibe that happens on these Witchcraft songs make them all the more retro pleasing. These two songs are heavy, no speed or mind blowing solos… just some real good Metal. Witchcraft is not from the early ’70’s, nor are they from the ’80’s either. Witchcraft formed in 2000, releasing their first studio/self titled album Witchcraft on Rise Above Records in 2004. Witchcraft hails from Örebro, Sweden.

Fans of these unreal legends – early/Ozzy Osbourne era Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Candlemass or any Doom Metal Band, just might take a Metal liking to Witchcraft. Stoner Metal fans of The Sword, High On Fire and Sleep, to name a few, could easily sink their teeth into Witchcraft’s Metal too.

* I Know You Killed Someone does not appear on any studio album from Witchcraft, essentially this is a non-album track.

* I paid roughly around 7 dollars (U.S.) for this Witchcraft record, that included shipping too.

ATROCITY – “COLD BLACK DAYS” EP RESONATES WITH GOTHIC METAL

ATROCITY – hailing from the grand Metal country of Germany, has their musical origins tracing back to 1985, while their Atrocity roots date back to 1989. The early years of Atrocity has them as a bona-fide Death Metal Band, with changes in their style taking them in the Industrial Metal and Gothic Metal directions. This brings me to this Atrocity EP – Cold Black Days, a bizarre and chilling track list of four songs. The bizarre adjective used prior, borders alongside haunting. Understandably, these are the adjectives one wants to hear when Gothic Metal is being discussed, it goes with the Gothic territory. To say the songs heard on this EP from Atrocity are a soundtrack to a vampiric slasher film, makes all the sense in the Gothic scheme of things. There are those times when one needs to take a nibble before they order the complete meal, lending an ear to EP’s makes sense… it’s sampling a band before an entire album purchase is made a reality.

I won’t tell a Metal fib… I like this Atrocity band and all of the Gothic nuances that go along with their music. From the articulate arrangements heard on the single Cold Black Days to the eerie atmospherics, with lead vocalist Alexander Krull narrowly hypnotizing my senses with his sinister delivery. I am not running for cover… I am now more intrigued by Atrocity than ever before. Antediluvian World is for all intents and purposes, Gothic in it’s mood and overall heavy appeal. However, this song plays out with some Thrash meets Symphonic, interwoven with a sliver of Hardcore. A wonderful blend of extremities I hear in Antediluvian World, while a dark Gothic cloud of mourning hovers over it. Atrocity has succeeded in welcoming me into their mysterious and melancholy world of Gothic Metal, thanks to this Cold Black Days EP.

SIX FEET UNDER – “GRAVEYARD CLASSICS III” A DEATH METAL ALBUM OF COVER SONGS!

I really get into Death Metal and have my core favorite, Death Metal bands. Six Feet Under is one of my core Death Metal bands of mine. When I listen to Death Metal, it’s like I’m getting back to my Metal basics… there’s no fooling around with this genre, just extreme vocals and groove infested, thunder splitting – Metal. Chris Barnes, with his ultra legendary, Death Metal growling vocals, is at his finest on Graveyard Classics III. This album marks the third installment of the Graveyard Classics series of cover song albums from Six Feet Under. Six Feet Under not only groove along at an impressively addicting pace, this album is damn F’n fun too. Yes, it is fun to hear Chris Barnes belt out his original and extreme vocals to ten amazingly historical Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Black Metal and Punk Rock songs.

One of the many reasons to admire Six Feet Under and their Graveyard Classics series, is their allegiance and recognition to so many historical and great bands from Rock Music’s past. It’s all about roots with these cover songs… and Six Feet Under covers them with Death Metal brilliance. My two favorite cover songs on Graveyard Classics III are: Destroyer by Twisted Sister and Not Fragile by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Six Feet Under plays Destroyer like they are going to take over the world… and implement a Death Metal master plan. Not Fragile showcases the guitar mastery of Steve Swanson, he really steals the Death Metal show on this song.

As I listen to Chris Barnes sing these two songs, I cannot help but not recognize that he is a fan of these bands he covers so well. Influence is a powerful word and bands like Slayer literally explode with it for so many musicians… Six Feet Under attests to this by covering At Dawn They Sleep. Six Feet Under may never be able to capture the Thrash Metal fire and intensity that only Slayer can deliver with At Dawn They Sleep, still, hearing such a fantastic Death Metal version of this classic is a thrill for me. The Frayed Ends Of Sanity is such a monumental choice for Six Feet Under to undertake as well, Metallica being the iconic Thrash Metal Band they are only drives home the reverence Chris Barnes upholds for Metal history. Oh, yeah, Six Feet Under plays this Metallica classic quite deadly well too.

What would a 2010 Death Metal cover song album, from Six Feet Under, be without an Anvil song? Metal On Metal only solidifies the fact that Anvil is as important a band to the history of Metal as any. Chris Barnes may not ever take over the vocal helm for Anvil’s Lips, regardless, he employs his very own grunt and growl trademark to a fabulous cover version. Just when you think Graveyard Classics III has all the historic Metal firepower to cover, A Dangerous Meeting by the unreal legendary Mercyful Fate is on this album too. A tough song to sing no matter who you are… Chris Barnes takes this song on and laces it with Death Metal vocal glorification. Psychotherapy by the Ramones and Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck by Prong are the fun moments for me on this album… two songs that probably no one ever would consider Death Metal material years ago. On Fire by Van Halen and Pounding Metal by (the blue collar) Thrash Metal vets Exciter, round out the ten Death Metal cover songs on Graveyard Classics III.

To say that Terry Butler on bass and Greg Gall on drums are very good is a Death Metal understatement… they are both excellent… the proof is in the songs. Six Feet Under has established their Death Metal legacy years ago, they are now just compounding this legacy, with an album of deliriously deadly cover songs called Graveyard Classics III. This is one damn fine listen – in Death Groove.

SATYRICON – “BLACK CROW ON A TOMBSTONE” VIDEO IS A BLACK METAL TRIUMPH

Satyricon – The Age Of Nero was released back on November 3, 2008. This is an album that gets increasingly greater for me, after each listen. One song in particular, Black Crow On A Tombstone, just stays in my head for days… weeks on end. I am not going to fight it off, it’s a fantastic song that I immensely enjoy. I can remember distinctly, the first time I listened to The Age Of Nero in it’s entirety… it blew me away. The grooves are abundant throughout this album, Black Metal reigns supreme through these songs. Satyricon created an album with The Age Of Nero that I would easily consider to be… Metal Album of the Decade. I’m not kidding around… the Metal… Black Metal, on this album is representative of what incredible song writing is all about, both musically and lyrically. Satyr proved to me, that you do not need to get mathematical, intricate or go over the top, in order to create a sensational Black Metal album such as this. Here is the video for Black Crow On A Tombstone – the darkness of the video compliments this song. Satyr sings this song with unreal conviction, which is an attribute I find so admirable and remarkable. Being pre-warned by the sight of a black crow, that impending doom is upon you, is the theme of this song. Here’s hoping you enjoy this great song and video as much as I do…

Well, sorry fellow Metalheads and Satyricon fans… apparently “WMG” (yeah, that record compnay) doesn’t want to “share” their music video’s with blogs like Metal Odyssey. It’s too bad, due to the fact that Metal Odyssey gives away FREE advertising for record companies like WMG day in and day out. Wherever you do go to finally see this amazing Satyricon music video, I hope you do enjoy it. Black Crow On A Tombstone is one HELL of a music video from one incredible Black Metal Band that is Satyricon.

Here are ten albums that did not make it to my Looking Back On 2009/Awards List, Top Ten Hard Rock Albums List or my Top 25 Heavy Metal Albums List. These are albums that I did buy, enjoyed, still listen to and reviewed on Metal Odyssey during 2009. They all deserve some Metal attention as well. There is no specific order of importance here, these are albums that I really want to celebrate – for their overall integrity in musicianship and songs. From the Progressive/Extreme Metal of Daath to the Hard Rock meets Heavy Metal of the ultra legendary Thin Lizzy, these 2009 albums blanket a few genres.
