BORIS RANDALL STONE: Recently, Boris Randall contacted Metal Odyssey and it is appreciated. Boris is a veteran of Punk and Extreme Metal Music, being a pioneer, in his own right, in the Horror Metal genre. A song writer, vocalist and lead/rhythm guitarist who really adheres to Rock ‘N’ Roll’s true roots, (Boris lists Elvis Presley, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Ramones as influences), he is a musician that is self-made and moving forward. Albeit underground or on Coffin Records, the music of Boris Randall has made some noise in the Heavy Music world over the last twenty + years. Boris has given Metal Odyssey, to share with fans, his career breakdown of bands he has founded and what he is up to at the moment. Here is what Boris Randall had to say and share: BORIS: First off, I’d like to thank you for supporting Hallowmas and my music. Let me give you some history on myself and how Hallowmas came to be and where it stands now. In 1989 I formed my first hardcore/punk band called THE SPLATTEPUNKS. We released several albums locally and underground. Complete do-it-yourself. We were relatively popular for what we were doing, and the fact that we were the ONLY punk/hardcore band with a horror image and horror lyrics within an 80 mile radius! (remember, in 1989 there was NO “horror punk” genre either) THE SPLATTERPUNKS kicked unholy ass until 1999 when I felt like it was time to move on. Our final release was an anthology that spanned our 10 years. Two cds, 76 songs, and a 28 page booklet that included lyrics and artwork. HALLOWMAS – THE ROAD TO HALLOW’S EVE album cover: In 2001 I formed HALLOWMAS. The idea was to take up where I left off with THE SPLATTERPUNKS, but to bring even more elements into it. And I did. I even brought a few of The Splatterpunks’ songs into Hallowmas. Hallowmas was a VERY busy band between releases, shows, interviews, videos, etc. The first Hallowmas release (on a real label) was in 2004 on Coffin Records. The album was called “October Burning.” It sold very well and continues to. It also received great reviews. The follow up was the ep you have called “The Road To Hallows Eve.” We went into the studio in 2006 and recorded our next full-length release, but the band broke up. That album, which I called “Autumn’s Soft Decay,” was never released even though it was finished and is in my possession. It also got leaked on the internet, so search the title and see if you can find it. The complete album is 18 tracks. HALLOWMAS – OCTOBER BURNING album cover: HALLOWMAS – classic promo group photo: In 2006 I also released a solo disc called “Season Of Death: The Last Halloween.” I limited it to 50 copies, which lasted about 4 weeks. I filled the time from 2007 to now by working with various bands, writing background music for the Rue Morgue Radio show, did the music for a Rue Morgue Radio video promo, and wrote the score for the Bill Hanzman’s Night Of The Living Dead stage play. Currently, I’m playing lead guitar in the extreme metal band NECROPHAGIA. If you’re well versed in metal I’m sure you know who they are. We’re in the studio right now working on our new album. I’ve also got my own band that will have a debut release very soon, but I’m keeping the whole thing under wraps for right now. That’s pretty much the light detail version of my history. Here’s a more detailed “time line” from my bands and their releases: THE SPLATTERPUNKS: HALLOWMAS: THE AUTUMN DEAD: BORIS RANDALL (solo): I’ve also made guest appearances on: I think that about covers it…….so far. I’ve got tons more music on the way. If you like Hallowmas I can’t wait for you to hear what I’ve got cooking. Plus, I hope you’ll enjoy my work in Necrophagia. Thanks for your interest and support, Metal Odyssey Note: Thank you Boris. It is always a thrill to get the “story straight” directly from the source. You and all of your bands are always welcomed at Metal Odyssey! Plus… I have a sinister suspicion I’m gonna like your work with Necrophagia’s new album… Deathtrip 69. NECROPHAGIA – 2010: From left to right: Boris Randall (guitar), Killjoy (vocals), Undead Torment (guitar), Shawn Slusarek (drums), Damien Matthews (bass). * For even more info on Boris Randall and Necrophagia, just click the links below: Boris Randall (solo) – myspace music page NECROPHAGIA – myspace music page * In case any visitor missed it, check out the album review I did on Hallowmas – The Road To Hallow’s Eve, back on September 25, 2009, by clicking on the link below: HALLOWMAS – “The Road To Hallow’s Eve” Is Horror Punk To Scream ForStone. |

(Death & Raw) is a scorcher of a live Death Metal album. If one wants to know where it all began with the Death Metal genre… one needs to get their ears glazed over with the power and force of Death’s original brand of Metal. A gigantic band in the history of Metal music is Death, with the late Chuck Schuldiner bringing to the forefront a Metal sound of extreme muscularity, embodied with his vocals, guitar and song writing. An unreal and unparalleled legacy of music… Death Metal Music, has Chuck Schuldiner left for us Metal fans to enjoy for generations to come.
Live In L.A. is rich with the heavy sound of Death, a top quality recording. This is not just some live album slapped and pieced together here… listening to Live In L.A. actually takes me there in my mind, to that actual Death concert back in 1998. I wish I really was at this concert, unfortunately I never did see Death live. The reality is in the listening to this excellent album of live Death songs, I can only marvel at how Chuck Schuldiner can pull me into the music he and Death are playing. This Live In L.A. album needs to be brought up for it’s credibility as a live album and for it’s powerful listen into Old School Death Metal.
When the topic of “most important” Metal bands comes my way, I most certainly consider Death to be in the equation. To incorporate lyrical themes of gore as well as social reality, in the way Chuck Schuldiner had accomplished, was only magnified to a profound level, by the extremely heavy sound of Death’s music. Chuck Schuldiner and Death figured most prominently in the formation of the Death Metal genre, still, putting genres aside, the legacy of Chuck Schuldiner and Death have also figured equally prominent in the history of Metal Music too… in my Metal opinion.
If I can recruit just a few readers to check out this live Death album, then I have done my Metal deed for the day. The heavy grooves are there, just waiting to be savored and heard on Live In L.A. (Death & Raw). Veteran Death fans know. New fans and younger generations should at least know, that Chuck Schuldiner and his band Death defined a genre. You won’t read that in any mainstream Pop Rock magazine.

I really get into Death Metal and have my core favorite, Death Metal bands. Six Feet Under is one of my core Death Metal bands of mine. When I listen to Death Metal, it’s like I’m getting back to my Metal basics… there’s no fooling around with this genre, just extreme vocals and groove infested, thunder splitting – Metal. Chris Barnes, with his ultra legendary, Death Metal growling vocals, is at his finest on Graveyard Classics III. This album marks the third installment of the Graveyard Classics series of cover song albums from Six Feet Under. Six Feet Under not only groove along at an impressively addicting pace, this album is damn F’n fun too. Yes, it is fun to hear Chris Barnes belt out his original and extreme vocals to ten amazingly historical Heavy Metal, Hard Rock, Black Metal and Punk Rock songs.
One of the many reasons to admire Six Feet Under and their Graveyard Classics series, is their allegiance and recognition to so many historical and great bands from Rock Music’s past. It’s all about roots with these cover songs… and Six Feet Under covers them with Death Metal brilliance. My two favorite cover songs on Graveyard Classics III are: Destroyer by Twisted Sister and Not Fragile by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Six Feet Under plays Destroyer like they are going to take over the world… and implement a Death Metal master plan. Not Fragile showcases the guitar mastery of Steve Swanson, he really steals the Death Metal show on this song.
As I listen to Chris Barnes sing these two songs, I cannot help but not recognize that he is a fan of these bands he covers so well. Influence is a powerful word and bands like Slayer literally explode with it for so many musicians… Six Feet Under attests to this by covering At Dawn They Sleep. Six Feet Under may never be able to capture the Thrash Metal fire and intensity that only Slayer can deliver with At Dawn They Sleep, still, hearing such a fantastic Death Metal version of this classic is a thrill for me. The Frayed Ends Of Sanity is such a monumental choice for Six Feet Under to undertake as well, Metallica being the iconic Thrash Metal Band they are only drives home the reverence Chris Barnes upholds for Metal history. Oh, yeah, Six Feet Under plays this Metallica classic quite deadly well too.
What would a 2010 Death Metal cover song album, from Six Feet Under, be without an Anvil song? Metal On Metal only solidifies the fact that Anvil is as important a band to the history of Metal as any. Chris Barnes may not ever take over the vocal helm for Anvil’s Lips, regardless, he employs his very own grunt and growl trademark to a fabulous cover version. Just when you think Graveyard Classics III has all the historic Metal firepower to cover, A Dangerous Meeting by the unreal legendary Mercyful Fate is on this album too. A tough song to sing no matter who you are… Chris Barnes takes this song on and laces it with Death Metal vocal glorification. Psychotherapy by the Ramones and Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck by Prong are the fun moments for me on this album… two songs that probably no one ever would consider Death Metal material years ago. On Fire by Van Halen and Pounding Metal by (the blue collar) Thrash Metal vets Exciter, round out the ten Death Metal cover songs on Graveyard Classics III.
To say that Terry Butler on bass and Greg Gall on drums are very good is a Death Metal understatement… they are both excellent… the proof is in the songs. Six Feet Under has established their Death Metal legacy years ago, they are now just compounding this legacy, with an album of deliriously deadly cover songs called Graveyard Classics III. This is one damn fine listen – in Death Groove.
* Graveyard Classics III was released on January 19, 2010, on Metal Blade Records.
* Album Cover Art By: Dusty Peterson – Unreal great stuff… now thats Metal. Death Metal.

This song is from Skyfire’s 2009 release – Esoteric. Skyfire is a Progressive Death Metal Band, originating from Sweden. I first heard Under A Pitch Black Sky from a compilation CD of Metal songs, courtesy from an issue of Metal Hammer that I picked up, sometime back in 2009. (Getting free Metal compilation CD’s from an issue of Metal Hammer… or from any source, is a very cool Metal deal). I really enjoy the Death Metal genre, throw in melodic and it suits me just the same. There is the atmospheric element of Symphonic Metal heard throughout this great song. Lead vocalist Joakim Karlsson sounds brilliant on Under A Pitch Black Sky, some may equate his vocals to having a touch of Black Metal fire as well. The blistering guitars are a focal point of this song… just one listen and you shall understand my Metal glee. At the end of the Metal day, SKYFIRE is an excellent Progressive Death Metal Band for me. I hope you enjoy Under A Pitch Black Sky as much as I do… crank this Metal up and it might get the funk out of your day too!
LONG LIVE SKYFIRE!

SKELETONWITCH released their second full studio album with Prosthetic Records, Breathing the Fire, on October 13, 2009. I could not resist the Metal temptation and need of picking up this new CD on my visit to f.y.e. today. As I stood there staring at the hellish and downright evil artwork on the front cover of Breathing the Fire, it dawned on me… the Metal wait is over for this new Skeletonwitch. Yeah, very often enough I want my Metal pretty damned fast and extreme in every musical facet. All twelve songs on this album are extremely worthy, I can’t point out any skip overs whatsoever. Skeletonwitch does not fall short of Extreme Metal – every song on Breathing the Fire is blended with the very best of several Metal genres.
Skeletonwitch brings forth the Thrash Metal attack combined with Old School Speed Metal, adding Death Metal and Black Metal influences just for great Metal measure. With all of these incredible Metal genres explored here, Skeletonwitch is a Metal band that I cannot pigeonhole into one genre. That is fine with me, I am sure Skeletonwitch could care in the least as well… Metal is… Metal. Breathing the Fire is one incredible Metal album to look back upon for 2009, it is like the late season, supercharged and extreme power blast of Metal Music that has set my Metal world ablaze. I always say, that with Metal bands like this, it makes me feel confident knowing that the flag for Metal will be waving high for years to come. Chance Garnette on lead vocals is as mean and talented as I could hope for – his dual Death Metal growls and Black Metal screams are what this music is about. Anyone familiar with Extreme Metal should agree, that this style of Metal was not meant for crooning out the ballads. Chance Garnette gets my Metal horns with thunderous praise. In my Metal opinion, Skeletonwitch can play, it’s not the easiest task to make an album of this Metal genre sound like a standout.
The guitar leads, dual leads and solos have a melodic, Old School – Speed Metal appeal, while never taking away from the overall dark mood of any of the songs. The rhythm section holds everything together like a vice and these songs grip my Metal psyche with pure Metal domination. I once read a professionally paid Rock critic write – melodic and heavy do not coexist… uh, they do. The Metal proof is in actually listening to Skeletonwitch and Breathing the Fire… the rest is Extreme and at times, melodic Metal candy for your ears. To extract each song and dissect it here would be nonsense, the overall themes to know are that these songs are about death and submitting to evil. ‘Nuff said. Ah, Metal. I will state, Blinding Black Rage is as horrific, evil and nightmarish of a song lyrically that I have ever heard. Ah, Metal… Extreme Metal, I love this stuff. This is the new generation of Extreme Metal, take it or leave it… I’m taking it. If you are looking for the current Metal that is happening now, take my advice and give Skeletonwitch – Breathing the Fire a thorough listen… it served me right.
Skeletonwitch as they appear on Breathing the Fire:
Nate “N8 Feet Under” Garnette – guitars
Chance Garnette – lead vocals
Derrick “Mullet Chad” Nau – drums
Scott “Scunty D.” Hedrick – guitars
Evan “Loosh” Linger – bass
Track Listing For Breathing the Fire:
Submit to the Suffering
Longing for Domination
Where the Light has Failed
Released from the Catacombs
Stand Fight and Die
The Despoiler of Human Life
Crushed Beyond Dust
Blinding Black Rage

Repulsive Salvation

Alright, I am more than thrilled at this new Obituary album, “Darkest Day”, I am enthralled with Metal jubilation. Death Metal jubilation. I am also reminded as to why I am lured into the heaviest, most Metal bludgeoning genre there is… it is Obituary. These guys are not about making nice with the trend setters… forget about it. Obituary is Old School Death Metal lathered with extreme. Understand, however, that Obituary delivers grooves by the Death Metal bushels. From it’s deadly beginning track – “List of Dead” to it’s deadly ending “Left To Die”, I am going out on a Metal limb here by stating… “Darkest Day” is one of 2009’s best Metal albums period. Being one of the true forefathers of the Death Metal genre, Obituary lays their Death Metal cards out on the table here, you either are with them or with them. This is not a Death Metal band that you just want to try out, if you buy an Obituary album, you are either a fan or your about to become one.
“Outside My Head” is like a Death Metal march to take over the Metal Universe, Donald Tardy on drums is as decidedly relentless as a yellow jacket wasp, stinging it’s prey. “Your Darkest Day” has it’s vintage nod to Doom with riffs that will either scare the hell out of you or make you beg for more… I beg for more, please. Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath should feel so proud, that a Death Metal band of the caliber like Obituary, can incorporate the early Metal years – feel and vibe to their music… without straying away from the Death Metal manuscript of today. Obviously, this is my Metal opinion, what one Metalhead hears within “Darkest Day” can severely differ from another. “See Me Now” is extremely heavy – underscored, my choice pick as favorite track. John Tardy on vocals only enhances the seething heaviness of “See Me Now”. For that matter, John Tardy just flat out enhances this entire album with his vintage and aggressive vocals, this is all about vocal confidence and not being over the top.
By the time I hear “Truth Be Told”, it feels like “Darkest Day” has only lasted five minutes… it is that unreal good. Ordinarily, with an average Death Metal up and coming band, “Truth Be Told” would be their greatest song – with Obituary, every song here can be considered as great. What can be said about Trevor Peres and Ralph Santolla on guitars? They are damn good, no, damn unreal good. Lest not forget Frank Watkins on bass, he keeps the Death Metal rhythm moving at a fiery pace, giving me every reason to suffer from whiplash. Cool. Acknowledgment of Metal greatness is priority number one whenever I discuss the Metal genres with anyone or post on Metal Odyssey. My Metal goal is to get the word out about unreal heavy bands and/or albums… the word on “Darkest Day” is this – real, extreme and forged with Death Metal integrity. “Darkest Day”… Metal ownership of this album is a must, (what am I thinking), it is required. Obituary… Death Metal legends.

I basically stumbled onto this CD courtesy of a local thrift store that I love to frequent – for Metal finds, of course. “Spit” only set me back 3 bucks, not too shabby for a Metal find. If you are into Death Metal, Hardcore and Extreme Metal, well, “Spit” should be in your Metal collection. Very heavy music here, seriously heavy. Heavy duty heavy. The lyrics are heavy. Everything about Kittie and “Spit” is Metal, of the extreme. Morgan Lander on vocals and guitar has the attitude bellowing with unashamed aggression. Morgan’s Death Metal vocals definitely get across loud and loud again. After listening to Morgan Lander sing, I would not want to be the dude that ever crosses her, in any way. Listening to all 12 songs will have you knowing that Kittie is not looking for commercial approval or a top 100 hit single. Kittie are playing the heaviest of Metal and delivering it like a cosmic meteor storm. I love Metal and respect what Kittie had created with “Spit”. This album has become one of my underground Metal favorites. This is a disc worth exploring if you are into the heaviest of Metal.
The enhanced CD version of “Spit” has a full screen video of the song “Brackish”. The Kittie lineup for “Spit” was: Morgan Lander on vocals & guitar, Mercedes Lander on drums, Talena Atfield on bass and Fallon Bowman on guitar. Kittie “Spit” was released on January 11, 2000. Going on a decade since it’s release, this Metal from Kittie measures up to todays Metal standard of heavy.

Rumpelstiltskin Grinder – a fresh breath of new school Thrash Metal

Rumpelstiltskin Grinder. It was just a matter of time before I picked up the newest release from these Thrash Metal dudes. “Living For Death, Destroying The Rest” is their brand new album, (on Relapse Records), it is fast, furious, super heavy, a tad diabolical, well, I made my point. These attributes are exactly what I look for from any Thrash Metal album, so it is safe to say that Rumpelstiltskin Grinder delivered the super Metal goods here, in my Metal opinion. I cannot say enough about the frenzied pace of the Thrash Metal with this album, while driving and listening to these guys, I have to say it is quite exhilarating.
“Graveyard Vandalization” is a tune that Cannibal Corpse should be very proud of. Lyrically, it is completely and insanely gory, disgusting and downright nasty. What else could anyone expect from a song lyrically, when it has a title like that? For me, the tune is still quite entertaining and musically encompasses all things Thrash. It is humorous to me, for when I think of the title for this album – “Living For Death, Destroying The Rest”, well, isn’t that the usual theme of 24 hour network news cable channels? If anyone out there cannot handle the lyrics and tunes from Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, I guess they probably should not be able to handle the nightly news either. It is refreshing for me to know, that a band like Rumpelstiltskin Grinder is running off with the torch of Thrash Metal – I hope they carry on for quite awhile. I recommend this album to any Metal fan who wants to be entertained with some down home, new school, Thrash Metal fury.
DAATH – “The Concealers” is a full blown Metal onslaught!

I still have my ability to hear, thank goodness, especially after I listened to the new release from the Death Metellars from Atlanta, Georgia, – DAATH. This is my kind of Metal cup of tea – a full blown onslaught of Death Metal, that rages through all eleven new songs like an out of control meteor, ready to strike the desolate and cold planet Mars. The new lead singer for DAATH is Sean Z., one listen to “The Concealers” and I am very convinced that he is up to the task to be a standout Death Metal front man. Sean Z. on vocals just seems to engulf the attitude and strength of the lyrics, belting out with the desire and hunger that the entire Metal world should find captivating.
Overall, this entire new album from DAATH is of course, Death Metal, yet they incorporate an underlying mood of progressiveness, with melancholy echoes and synthetic eerie sounds – creating an atmosphere that is as dark as it is melodious. On “The Unbinding Truth” and “… Of Poisoned Sorrows” both tunes end in an abrupt and distorted manner, with the music skipping – the sounds of crackling, (like an old vinyl record being played), can be heard. (Upon my first listen, I thought I had a defect in my CD). This breakaway from the norm works fine for me, it only adds to the dark tone of what is being conveyed by DAATH.
Emil Werstler and Eyal Levi on guitars are reaching out to new heights with their skills on this album – they play very heavy and very fast, yet the breakdowns and leads are tastefully done for a Death Metal album. Jeremy Creamer on bass and Kevin Talley on drums pound out the rhythm section with pure force and defiance, that catapults this album into the real-deal realm of Death Metal. My copy of “The Concealers” I purchased directly through Century Media (my favorite record company on planet Earth), it came with an extra copy of the liner notes – authentically autographed by each member of DAATH!! Obviously, I am content with “The Concealers” – this is an album I highly recommend to all Metal and Death Metal fans. DAATH, in my Metal opinion, is a Death Metal force to reckon with and when their tunes are on – I am all ears.
Cannibal Corpse – no bones about it, they deliver the real Death Metal

If there is one band that I can identify the entire Death Metal genre with, it is Cannibal Corpse. Why do I adore Death Metal? I easily embrace the straight up approach and punishing sound that comes from this music. I really do not care in the least if I cannot make out the lyrics coming from lead vocalist George Fisher. Are the vocals still important? Of course, the cookie monster vocals are the trademark identity of what Death Metal is supposed to sound like! Therefore, if I was to choose my favorite Death Metal band, it is Cannibal Corpse. (Arch Enemy comes in a very, very, close second). Cannibal Corpse and the entire Death Metal genre will probably never receive mainstream media acclaim – who cares. Any Death Metal band could never expect any gratitude from anyone except their fans. That is what makes all Metal so special.
I always grin and basically laugh, when I read articles both past and present, in regards to how the album cover artwork and lyrics offend whoever. My, how different gore and horror is perceived by some, especially when it is delivered musically from a Death Metal icon like Cannibal Corpse! In my rational and educated mind, I perceive gore and horror the same, whether it is portrayed through Death Metal or film, like a Steven King novel or movie, the same for Clive Barker, John Carpenter and Rob Zombie as well. Wes Craven was never one to water down his brand of gore and horror through film. Actually, the single worst and most gruesome way to view and/or listen to gore and horror is to watch the nightly news or 24 hour news networks – choose your evil. At least with Cannibal Corpse, you know what you are buying when their respective album/CD is in your hands, it is fair warning. The news networks, well, they never give you warning anymore when they show dead bodies, body parts or extreme accidents. (They used to, yet it is no longer cool to warn us viewers. Instead they rather have children sitting at home in front of the television be traumatized for an extended period of time. There is no way on Earth to filter out the gore and horror on the network news). Do the people who are offended by Cannibal Corpse and Death Metal in general get just as annoyed by the news networks? Are you kidding! NO. How about Hollywood Horror films? NO again! Actors, writers, film directors and news networks seem to always get the free pass. We live in a society of constant double standards – what is o.k. for Hollywood horror and slasher movies is not o.k. for Cannibal Corpse or any Death Metal band out there. Yet, once a new Cannibal Corpse album comes out, watch out! Cannibal Corpse gets the self righteous fists shaken at them again!
So, I will continue to listen to Cannibal Corpse for as long as I have ears that work. Rob Barrett and Pat O’Brien on guitars, Alex Webster on bass, Paul Mazurkiewicz on drums and George Fisher on vocals are as talented as they come with musicianship, they only deliver their musical skills one way – real Death Metal. Their unrelenting power-charge of forceful and angry Metal, always uncompromising, encompassed by abhorrent lyrics of gore, horror, shock and all extremes known, will forever entertain me to my Metal hearts delight!!

Paranormal reality television and scary Metal music mirror one another

It is an obvious Metal music marriage, the paranormal being put to lyrics in Metal songs. Any King Diamond album supports this statement, that is for certain. Horror and the paranormal rules the Metal world’s lyrics with it’s mystery, shock, and imagery. This to me, is one of the great attributes to Metal music, the paranormal and horror has given personality and life to throngs of Metal bands as: Alice Cooper, Misfits, Kiss (with makeup), Lordi, Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Danzig, W.A.S.P., Cannibal Corpse and of course, King Diamond again. The list could go on and on, regarding which Metal bands represent the horror and paranormal subjects best.
I highly recommend taking a listen to Iced Earth – “The Horror Show”, this is an album dedicated to just the legendary horror movie monsters: Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein and The Phantom of the Opera are covered just fine by Matt Barlow’s vocals and the writing and musical genius of Jon Schaffer. I also highly recommend the horror concept album, that for me is now a true Metal classic – “Abigail” from King Diamond, released in 1987. In my opinion, “Abigail” was/is a triumphant representation of Black Metal, even though the music includes heavy duty Speed Metal throughout. This King Diamond lineup on “Abigail” also bestows the talented Mikkey Dee on drums, who has been a mainstay with Motorhead, since 1992.
When I listen to my favorite Metal bands playing tunes about the macabre, horror and the paranormal, I cannot help reflecting on my favorite paranormal television shows. The material that King Diamond covers, for example, mirrors what many of the paranormal shows offer. My favorite scary & spooky television shows are: “Ghost Hunters”, “Penn State Paranormal”, “Most Haunted”, “UFO Hunters” and “Monster Quest”, all delving into the mysteriously unknown, paranormal, the dark side and real life monsters. Any Metal band can get hordes of information and subject matter for their music, just by watching this scary paranormal reality television.
Now, do I believe in all of this paranormal subject matter that these shows discuss/cover? Do I believe in real life monsters like Bigfoot, Moth Man and UFO aliens? Let’s just say, I get entertained and spooked out like anyone else, I really like the unknown aspect of these topics. I am also never going to be one of those, who back when Christopher Columbus sailed the seven seas, thought our planet Earth was square. It is an absolute fact, that new species of any of our known living organisms, (plants, fish, animals, insects), are being discovered on a daily basis. There are many, many, mysteries and dark questions out there that still have to be answered, for me it is great fun delving into these scary topics through Metal music and paranormal reality television. My feeling is that, paranormal reality television and Metal music just seem to go together, both never cease to thrill and entertain me.

Every once in awhile, well, I tend to be slightly comedic. What better way to get away from the white useless noise of MSNBC than to have some comic relief that incorporates Heavy Metal? Here are some Heavy Metal happenings that will never, ever, happen in a million Metal years:
#1. A live Cannibal Corpse concert held in Salt Lake City, Utah, will be aired on PBS this fall.
#2. The Grammy Awards of 2010, will recognize Motorhead with a lifetime achievement award.
#3. The American Music Awards will have Iced Earth perform live, on their stage, for their 2010 airing.
#4. Al Gore will finally admit to Dee Snider that Heavy Metal will not corrupt our youth.
#5. Oprah Winfrey will have King Diamond on her show, delving into the mystique of horror lyrics in Metal.
#6. Dan Rather will travel with Motley Crue this Summer, documenting and narrating for film – “Crue Fest 2009”.
#7. Keith Olberman of MSNBC fame will become the new host for MTV’s “Headbangers Ball” beginning this fall.
#8. Chris Matthews of MSNBC fame will finally accept the role to play “Aunt Bea” in the new television remake of “The Andy Griffith Show.” David Lee Roth will accept the opportunity to redo the famous show opening whistling song.
#9. North American concert promoters will announce that Power Metal festivals will be abundant and year long events in all 50 states!
#10. Dr. Phil will have Arch Enemy perform on his show. Dr. Phil will then admit to his tongue tied audience that Death Metal is “good, clean, mental therapy.”
Caught in the midst of deciding – the greatest Metal album ever

So far, I have compiled 5 lists of Metal nominees for the greatest Metal album of all time. I never anticipated just how difficult a (dare I say task) it has been. It has been a fun task, affording me the opportunity to dig deeper into the years of Heavy Metal and all of the amazing genres of Metal that are out there. Will my decision make every Metal fan who reads the Metal Odyssey blog happy? I doubt that, for I am really embarking on a personal decision here, a decision not based on record sales, popularity or chart positions. Furthermore, as any fan of Metal music knows, your favorite band or bands are just that – your main bands. My goal here to decide on the greatest Metal album of all time is not to offend any fellow Metal fans in any way. I keep saying, this is a personal choice, yet, I am also looking forward to backing up and defending my decision! Some people might wonder or think, who cares what this guy thinks is the greatest Metal album of all time? My only response to anyone out there who thinks this is just a waste of time is – this endeavor only shows how much I actually embrace and love Metal music. Plus, researching and writing about the greatest Metal album of all time is light years more constructive and interesting for me, than to be chasing around crap stories about politics and crap stories about politicians second cousins and half sisters.
Being a fan of sports my entire life, I also have grown so extremely tired of the constant articles, stories and lists about what athlete is the greatest of their respective sport, of all time. I have heard it enough, the same old answers when it comes to the greatest sports teams and players. It gets to the point where, anyone knows the answer, the debate has truly dried up with greatest lists of sports. Who, honestly, in their right mind, would argue against Tiger Woods being the greatest golfer ever? What sense would it make to not agree that Michael Jordan is the greatest NBA player ever? With MLB, you can have somewhat of a debate, still Babe Ruth is hard to ignore for being the greatest ever. (I apologize for getting away from Metal here, sports is fun to debate, I just want to show that it appears to be easier to decide on a greatest sports athlete – compared to a greatest Metal album).
Metal represents a form of music and music representation. Metal music comes out of just about every country/continent on this planet. Depending on the country of it’s Metal origin, the Metal music represents the culture, sounds, views and feelings of that respective nation of origin. Metal music can (and does not always have to) mirror life. My point I am trying to convey is Metal music is not just something that exists, it is not just something that can be thrown aside like hollywood gossip. Metal music is real and I am darn proud to be as passionate about this music that has enriched my entire life.

KREATOR has created incredible Thrash Metal!
Posted in Album Review, Death Metal, Drums, Edguy, GammaRay, Guitar, Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal Reviews, Kreator, Metal, Metal Reviews, Metallica, Music, Over Kill, Power Metal, Scorpions, Thrash Metal, Vocals with tags Death Metal, Heavy Metal, Kreator, Metallica, Music, Slayer, Song, Thrash Metal on March 22, 2009 by Metal Odyssey
Hey, I hold one heck of a strong allegiance to Thrash Metal. Veteran Thrash originators like Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Anthrax, Megadeth, Destruction, Over Kill, Testament and even young newcomers like Black Tide and Warbringer set me straight on the road to Thrash Metal glee. My main point of this article is to shout out loudly and proudly to the entire world that – Kreator is one unbelievable Thrash Metal band, wow. What has me so impressed by Kreator, is that they have released 2 amazing Thrash albums in a row! Starting with “Enemy of God”, (released in January of 2005), then this January of 2009 brought us the incredible “Hordes of Chaos”. I am not, in any way, taking away the Thrash Metal greatness of their achievements from the 1980’s and 1990’s. Kreator has, experimented musically in the past, yet this has never been an abomination to me by any means.
If you are a fan of Heavy Metal, Metal or Thrash Metal, you simply have to give Kreator a listen if you have not already. There are mainstream “music critics” out there who do not have a clue, they do not even know that Kreator is generating throngs of fans worldwide with their tours and quality albums. Furthermore, these so called professional “music critics” are always the first to cry out that melody and Thrash/Death Metal do not exist together. Well, Kreator pretty much adds melody to their Thrash, you are not getting just a flurry of riffs and chords that go nowhere with pummeling blast beats.
The essential and basic ingredients to achieving top tier Thrash Metal is accomplished here with Kreator. On “Enemy of God” and “Hordes of Chaos”, you will hear lyrics on violence, anarchy and just about every dark image you can imagine. The guitar riffs, leads and solos are second to none in the genre. The lead vocals are powerful, distinct and never take center stage over the music itself. The rhythm section is a lesson in Thrash Metal 101, beating you down into a Thrash submission that elevates you at the same time. Kreator hails from the fine country of Germany. Over the last couple of decades or more, Germany has been infamous for the Power Metal greatness that it exports, (Scorpions, Accept, Edguy, GammaRay, etc). Well, Germany has in my opinion, delivered to the Metal world, what I regard as one of the greatest and most underrated Thrash Metal bands that has ever existed – Kreator.
Kreator initially bestowed their greatness to the Thrash Metal genre in 1986, with “Flag of Hate”. Obviously, Kreator is a veteran Thrash Metal band, they have sustained and persevered like so many others in Metal. Since then, there have been lineup changes with the band, which to me, is a natural occurrence within any Rock music genre. The current Kreator lineup is as follows: Miland ‘Mille’ Petrozza on vocals and guitar, Jurgen ‘Ventor’ Reil on drums, Christian ‘Speesy’ Giesler on bass and Sami Yli-Sirnio on guitar. I highly, without hesitation, recommend the entire Kreator catalog of music to savvy Thrash Metal fans worldwide – especially “Enemy of God” and “Hordes of Chaos”, these two albums alone are Thrash Metal gold for me.
